  • Measurement of the gluon fragmentation function and a comparison of the scaling violation in gluon and quark jets
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 13:4, s. 573-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons are measured in various three-jet topologies in Z decays from the full data set collected with the DELPHI detector at the Z resonance between 1992 and 995. The results at different values of transverse momentum-like scales are compared. A parameterization of the quark and gluon fragmentation functions at a fixed reference scale is given. The quark and gluon fragmentation functions show the predicted pattern of scaling violations. The scaling violation for quark jets as a function of a transverse momentum-like scale is in a good agreement with that observed in lower energy e+e- annihilation experiments. For gluon jets it appears to be significantly stronger. The scale dependences of the gluon and quark fragmentation functions agree with the prediction of the DGLAP evolution equations from which the colour factor ratio CA/CF is measured to be: CA/CF = 2.26 ± 0.09stat. ± 0.06sys. ± 0.12clus.,scale..

  • Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 15-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muon pair production in the process e+e- → e+e- μ+μ- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (√s ≃ mz) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb-1. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV2/c4 to several hundred GeV2/c4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function Fγ 2. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, Fγ A and Fγ B, which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes. The measured ratios Fγ A/Fγ 2 and FγB/Fγ 2 are significantly different from zero and consistent with QED predictions.

  • Search for sleptons in e+e- collisions at √s = 183 to 189 GeV
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 29-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb-1 have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay (ℓ̃ → ℓx̃), producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay (ℓ → ℓx̃0 2 → ℓγx̃0 1), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are mẽ ≤ 87 GeV/c2, mμ̃ ≤ 80 GeV/c2 and mτ̃ 75 GeV/c2, respectively, for values of μ=-200 GeV/c2 and tanβ=1.5.

  • A precise measurement of the B+, B-0 and mean b-hadron lifetime with the DELPHI detector at LEP I
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 33:3, s. 307-324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Final results from the DELPHI Collaboration on the lifetime of B+ and B-0 mesons and the mean b-hadron lifetime, are presented using the data collected at the Z(0) peak in 1994 and 1995. Elaborate, inclusive, secondary vertexing methods have been employed to ensure a b-hadron reconstruction with good efficiency. To separate samples of B+ and B-0 mesons, high performance neural network techniques are used that achieve very high purity signals. The results obtained are: tau(B+) = 1.624+/-0.014 (stat)+/-0.018 (syst) ps tau(B)0 = 1.531+/-0.021 (stat)+/-0.031 (syst) ps tau(B+)/tau(B)0 = 1.060+/-0.021 (stat)+/-0.024 (syst) and for the average b-hadron lifetime: taub/tau(B)0 = 1.570+/-0.005 (stat)+/-0.008 (syst) ps.

  • b-tagging in DELPHI at LEP
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 32:2, s. 185-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The standard method used for tagging b-hadrons in the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP Collider is discussed in detail. The main ingredient of b-tagging is the impact parameters of tracks, which relies mostly on the vertex detector. Additional information, such as the mass of particles associated to a secondary vertex, significantly improves the selection efficiency and the background suppression. The paper describes various discriminating variables used for the tagging and the procedure of their combination. In addition, applications of b-tagging to some physics analyses, which depend crucially on the performance and reliability of b-tagging, are described briefly.

  • A study of the energy evolution of event shape distributions and their means with the DELPHI detector at LEP
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:3, s. 285-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Infrared and collinear safe event shape distributions and their mean values are determined in e(+)e(-) collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 45 and 202GeV. A phenomenological analysis based on power correction models including hadron mass effects for both differential distributions and mean values is presented. Using power corrections, alpha(s) is extracted from the mean values and shapes. In an alternative approach, renormalisation group invariance (RGI) is used as an explicit constraint, leading to a consistent description of mean values without the need for sizeable power corrections. The QCD beta-function is precisely measured using this approach. From the DELPHI data on Thrust, including data from low energy experiments, one finds beta(0) = 7.86 +/- 0.32 for the one loop coefficient of the beta-function or, assuming QCD, n(f) = 4.75 +/- 0.44 for the number of active flavours. These values agree well with the QCD expectation of beta(0) = 7.67 and n(f) 5. A direct measurement of the full logarithmic energy slope excludes light gluinos with a mass below 5GeV.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 32:2, s. 145-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • These final results from DELPHI searches for the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, together with benchmark scans of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) neutral Higgs bosons, used data taken at centre-of-mass energies between 200 and 209 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 224 pb(-1). The data from 192 to 202 GeV are reanalysed with improved b-tagging for MSSM final states decaying to four b-quarks. The 95% confidence level lower mass bound on the Standard Model Higgs boson is 114.1 GeV/c(2). Limits are also given on the lightest scalar and pseudo-scalar Higgs bosons of the MSSM.

  • Inclusive b decays to wrong sign charmed mesons
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 561:1-2, s. 26-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of wrong sign charmed mesons b --> (D) over bar X-(s), D-(s) = (D-0, D+, D-s), is studied using the data collected by the DELPHI experiment in the years 1994 and 1995. Charmed mesons in Z --> b (b) over bar events are exclusively reconstructed by searching for the decays D-0 --> K(-)pi(+), D+ --> K(-)pi(+)pi(+) and D-s(+) --> phipi(+) --> K(+)K(-)pi(+). The wrong sign contribution is extracted by using two discriminant variables: the charge of the b-quark at decay time, estimated from the charges of identified particles, and the momentum of the charmed meson in the rest frame of the b-hadron. The inclusive branching fractions of b-hadrons into wrong sign charm mesons are measured to be: B(b --> (D) over bar X-0) + B(b --> D-X) = (9.3 +/- 1.7(stat) +/- 1.3(syst) +/- 0.4(B))%, B(b --> Ds-X) = (10.1 +/- 1.0(stat) +/- 0.6(syst) +/- 2.8(B))% where the first error is statistical, the second and third errors are systematic. • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 569:3-4, s. 129-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DELPHI results are presented on the inclusive production of two (K(K) over bar π)(0) states in the mass region 1.2-1.6 GeV/c(2) in hadronic Z decays at LEP I. The measured masses (widths) are 1274 +/- 6 MeV/c(2) (29 +/- 12 MeV/c(2)) and 1426 +/- 6 MeV/c(2) (51 +/- 14 MeV/c(2)), respectively. A partial-wave analysis of the (K(K) over bar π)(0) system shows that the first peak is consistent with the I-G (J(PC)) = 0(+)(1(++))/(0(-+))a(0)(980)pi and the second with the I-G (J(PC)) = 0(+)(1(++))K*(892)(K) over bar + c.c. assignments. The total hadronic production rates per hadronic Z decay are (0.165 +/- 0.051) and (0.056 +/- 0.012), respectively. These measurements are consistent with the two states being the f(1) (1285) and f(1) (1420) mesons. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 31:2, s. 139-147

    • W(+)W(-)gamma production at LEP2 is studied using data collected with the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 600 pb(-1). Cross-sections are measured for the production of W+W- with a hard, central and isolated photon in the final state, and are found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction. The photon energy spectra are used to derive limits on anomalous contributions to the W(+)W(-)Z(o)gamma and W(+)W(-)gammagamma vertices.

  • Rapidity-alignment and p(T) compensation of particle pairs in hadronic Z(0) decays
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 533:3-4, s. 243-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Observation is made of rapidity-alignment of K+K- and (p) over barp pairs which results from their asymmetric orientation in rapidity, with respect to the direction from primary quark to antiquark. The K+K- and (p) over barp data are consistent with predictions from the fragmentation string model. However, the (p) over barp data strongly disagree with the conventional implementation of the cluster model. The non-perturbative process of 'gluon splitting to diquarks' has to be incorporated into the cluster model for it to agree with the data. Local conservation of PT between particles nearby in rapidity (i.e., p(T) compensation) is analysed with respect to the thrust direction for pi(+)pi(-), K+K-, and (p) over barp pairs. In this case, the string model provides fair agreement with the data. The cluster model is incompatible with the data for all three particle pairs. The model with its central premiss of isotropically-decaying clusters predicts a p(T) correlation not seen in the data. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Search for an LSP gluino at LEP with the DELPHI detector
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:4, s. 505-525
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In some supersymmetric models, the gluino ((g) over tilde) is predicted to be light and stable. In that case, it would hadronize to form R-hadrons. In these models, the missing energy signature of the lightest supersymmetric particle is no longer valid, even if R-parity is conserved. Therefore, such a gluino is not constrained by hadron collider results, which looked for the decay (g) over tilde --> q (q) over bar(χ) over tilde (0)(1). Data collected by the DELPHI detector in 1994 at 91.2 GeV have been analysed to search for q (q) over bar(gg) over tilde events. No deviation from Standard Model predictions is observed and a gluino mass between 2 and 18 GeV/c(2) is excluded at the 95% confidence level in these models. Then, R-hadrons produced in the squark decays were searched for in the data collected by DELPHI at the centre-of-mass energies of 189 to 208 GeV, corresponding to an overall integrated luminosity of 609 pb(-1). The observed number of events is in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived on the squark masses from the excluded regions in the plane (m((q) over tilde1),m((g) over bar)): m((t) over tilde1) > 90 GeV/c(2) and m((b) over tilde1) > 96 GeV/c(2) for purely left squarks. m((t) over tilde1) > 87 GeV/c(2) and m((b) over tilde1) > 82 GeV/c(2) independent of the mixing angle.

    • Neutral B meson oscillations in the B-s(0) - <(B-s(0))over bar>, and B-d(0) - <(B-d(0))over bar> systems were studied using a sample of about 4.0 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the DELPHI detector between 1992 and 2000. Events with a high transverse momentum lepton were removed and a sample of 770 k events with an inclusively reconstructed vertex was selected. The mass difference between the two physical states in the B-d(0) - <(B-d(0))over bar>system was measured to be: Deltam(d) = (0.531 +/- 0.025(stat.) +/- 0.007(syst.))ps(-1). The following limit on the width difference of these states was also obtained: DeltaGamma(Bd)/Gamma(Bd) < 0.18 at 95% CL. As no evidence for B-s(0) -<(B-s(0))over bar> oscillations was found, a limit on the mass difference of the two physical states was given:, Deltam(s) > 5.0 ps(-1) at 95% CL. The corresponding sensitivity of this analysis is equal to 6.6 ps(-1).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for sleptons, neutralinos, charginos, sgoldstinos and heavy stable charged sleptons in the context of scenarios where the lightest supersymmetric particle is the gravitino, is presented. Data collected during 2000 with the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies from 204 to 208 GeV were analysed and combined with all the data collected from 1995 to 1999 at lower energies. No evidence for the production of sleptons, neutralinos and charginos has been found, therefore new limits on the mass of these supersymmetric particles and on the model parameter space are set. The search for heavy stable charged sleptons also updates the stable sleptons mass limit. The absence of evidence for sgoldstino production allows limits to be set on its mass and on the scale of supersymmetry breaking.

    • The form factor of A(o)(b) baryons is estimated using 3.46 x 10(6) hadronic Z decays collected by the DELPM experiment between 1992 and 1995. Charmed A(c)(+) baryons fully reconstructed in the pK(-)pi(+), pK(o)(s), and Api(+)pi(+)pi(-) modes, are associated to a c S lepton with opposite charge in order to select A(o)(b) --> A(c)(+)l(-)v(l) decays. From a combined likelihood and event rate fit to the b C distribution of the Isgur-Wise variable w, and using the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET), the slope of the b-baryon form factor is measured to be p(2)=2.03+/-0.46(stat)(-1.00)(+0.72)(syst). The exclusive semileptonic branching fraction Br(A(b)(o) --> A(c)(+)l(-)v(l)) can be derived from p(2) and is found to be (5.0(-0.8)(+1.1)(stat)(-1.2)(+1.6) (syst))%. • DELPHI data collected at centre-of-mass energies up to 208 GeV have been analysed to search for charginos, neutralinos and sfermions in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with R-parity conservation. No evidence for a signal was found in any of the channels. The results of each search were used to derive limits on production cross-sections and particle masses. In addition, the combined result of all searches excludes regions in the parameter space of the constrained MSSM, leading to limits on the mass of the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle and other supersymmetric particles.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive J/psi production in photon-photon collisions has been observed at LEP II beam energies. A clear signal from the reaction gammagamma --> J/psi + X is seen. The number of observed N(J/psi --> mu(+)mu(-)) events is 36+/-7 for an integrated luminosity of 617 pb(-1), yielding a cross-section of sigma(J/psi + X) = 45+/-9(stat) +/- 17(syst) pb. Based on a study of the event shapes of different types of gammagamma processes in the PYTHIA program, we conclude that (74+/-22) % of the observed J/psi events are due to 'resolved' photons, the dominant contribution of which is most probably due to the gluon content of the photon. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production fractions of charged and neutral b-hadrons in b-quark events from Z(0) decays have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP. An algorithm has been developed, based on a neural network, to estimate the charge of the weakly-decaying b-hadron by distinguishing its decay products from particles produced at the primary vertex. From the data taken in the years 1994 and 1995, the fraction of (b) over bar -quarks fragmenting into positively charged weakly-decaying b-hadrons has been measured to be: f(+) = (42.09+/-0.82(stat)+/-0.89(syst))%. Subtracting the rates for charged Xi(b)(+) and Omega(b)(+) baryons gives the production fraction of B+ mesons: f(Bu) = (40.99+/-0.82(stat)+/-1.11 (syst)) %.

  • Towards a greater understanding of pattern, scale and process in marine benthic systems: a picture is worth a thousand worms
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. - 0022-0981. ; 285, s. 313-338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historically, advances in our knowledge of benthic community structure and functioning have necessarily relied upon destructive sampling devices (grabs, cores, anchor dredges, etc.) that lose valuable contextual information in the process of sampling. In the last 40 years, instrumentation capable of measuring dynamic events and/or processes within and immediately above the seafloor has been developed that facilitates the collection of ecological information. Of these, both acoustic and optical imaging devices have played a significant role in revealing much about the physiology and behaviour of, and interactions between benthic species, and the sedimentary habitat in which they reside. While a number of reviews have separately considered the methodological and technical aspects of imaging technologies, the collective contribution that imaging has made to benthic ecology has received less attention. In this short review, we attempt to highlight key instances over the last 40 years where either acoustic or optical-based imaging techniques have provided new ecological insights and information about fine-grained sedimentary environments. In so doing, we focus on the ecological advances that have formed the precursor to current research efforts and introduce some of the latest revelations from appropriate and emerging imaging applications. • Feeding behaviour and functional response of Abra ovata and A-nitida compared by image analysis
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 267, s. 195-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An automated image analysis system was used to monitor sediment surface feeding activity of 2 bivalves (Abra ovata and A. nitida) inhabiting contrasting environments. A larger variety of feeding behaviours was recorded in A. nitida, whereas A. ovata mostly fed at the sediment surface. There were also clear differences in the behaviour of the 2 species during surface deposit feeding (i.e. a wider extension of the inhalant siphon in A. ovata, and the exhalant siphon being located below the sediment-water interface in A. ovata and above this interface in A. nitida). In A. nitida, increase in feeding activity resulted mostly from an increase in feeding intensity, and not from an increase in the amount of time devoted to feeding. In A. ovata, the most active bivalves tended to increase their activity mostly by increasing the amount of time devoted to feeding. This suggests that feeding intensity was limited in A. ovata but not in A. nitida. Food dilution and food addition experiments were carried out to assess the functional response in the 2 species. The results of the food dilution experiments were statistically insignificant due to high inter-individual variability. Food addition significantly affected feeding activity in A. ovata and A. nitida, although in different ways. In A. ovata, feeding activity was highest at intermediate food concentrations, and inhibited at the highest ones. In A. nitida, increased feeding activity was induced at higher concentrations than in A. ovata, and feeding activity was greatest at the highest food concentration. Such discrepancies in feeding behaviour and functional response in closely related species characterise the difficulty in delineating functional groups in benthic deposit-feeders.

  • Comparative study of water-processing in two ciliary filter-feeding polychaetes (Ditrupa arietina and Euchone papillosa) from two different habitats
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 229, s. 113-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comparative study of feeding rates and structures was made with the 2 ciliary filter-feeding polychaetes Ditrupa arietina and Euchone papillosa from the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions, France) and the Gullmarsfjord (Sweden), respectively. The feeding rate (clearance) was measured as the volume of water cleared of 6 pm diameter flagellate cells (Rhodomonas sp.) per unit Lime. Most experiments were conducted at algal concentrations equivalent to about 0.4 to 3.8 mug chlorophyll a l(-1). The clearance rates of 'standard' 1.5 mg dry wt E. papillosa and 'standard' 3.0 mg dry wt D. arietina showed that the maximum weight-specific clearance rate was 114.7 ml h(-1) mg(-1) for E. papillosa and about 7 times lower, 15.7 ml h-1 mg-1, for D. arietina. A relative large tentacle crown in E. papillosa, resulting in the higher specific clearance rate, may be the evolutionary result of 'minimal scaling' and adaptation to extremely low food concentrations. When the algal concentration was increased from 2000 to 10 000 cells ml(-1) a 50% decrease in the clearance rate was observed in D. arietina, presumably because the gut capacity was exceeded. A more pronounced tendency to become satiated was found for E. papillosa. No tendency to reduce the filter-feeding activity at even very low algal concentrations was noticed in the 2 polychaetes, and the filtering activity of both worms seems to be a basically continuous process. Video-microscope observations of E. papillosa showed that suspended algal cells approaching the pinnules suddenly accelerate and move through an arc of over 180degrees to be delivered on the frontal side of the pinnule. The transfer takes place at a maximum distance (radius) of about 25 mum from the pinnule. Scanning micrographs show the compound lateral cilia to be 20 to 25 mum long in both D, arietina and E, papillosa and to consist of 1 row of 4 cilia. The feeding current is generated by these compound cilia, which, during their power stroke, catch up with the particles.

  • Benthic habitats in the northwest Mediterranean characterised by sedimentary organics, benthic macrofauna and sediment profile images
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science. - 0272-7714. ; 57:1-2, s. 297-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A total of 36 benthic stations were studied in four areas in the oligotrophic Gulf of Lions and in one area of the severely disturbed Berre Lagoon in the northwest Mediterranean in October 2001. The study included analysis of sediment characteristics, particularly organic matter, and analyses of macrofauna and sediment profile images (SPIs). In the Gulf of Lions, values of superficial sediment biochemical characteristics were similar to available literature data, with the important exception of enzymatically hydrolysable amino acids (EHAA) and enzymatically to total amino acid ratios (EHAA/THAA) off the Rhone River and the city of Saint-Cyprien. All biochemical concentrations, but not EHAA/THAA ratios, were higher in the Berre Lagoon. A total number of 190 taxa were recorded, generally occurring in low density and biomass. In most SPIs from the Gulf, a deep infaunal bioturbation was observed, i.e. burrows and feeding voids were recorded in 85 and 62% of the images, respectively. This infaunal activity was associated with a mean depth of the apparent redox potential discontinuity (aRPD) in the sediment at 2.1-3.5 cm in the gulf and 0.2 cm in the lagoon. The benthic habitat quality (BHQ) index, summarising surface structures, subsurface structures and the depth of the aRPD, assigned most benthic stations in the Gulf to the benthic successional stages 11 or 111, i.e. fairly undisturbed habitats. Demersal trawling, however, probably was a disturbance to most muddy superficial sediments in the Gulf. Multivariate analysis (MDS) of the macrofauna and the SPIs both separated three groups of stations: muddy, sandy and those that were disturbed from the lagoon, but a few stations showed dissimilarities to this general pattern. Principal component analysis (PCA) resulted in the best correlation between faunal abundance and biomass and enzymatically available amino acids in the sediment. PCA grouped almost all stations into three separate groups: muddy, sandy and severely disturbed habitats, and the muddy habitat group was associated with high aRPDs and BHQ indices. It is concluded that SPI is useful for in situ analysis of infaunal bioturbation activity and redox conditions, and for benthic habitat classification in the oligotrophic northwestern Mediterranean and the disturbed Berre Lagoon. • Effects of demersal trawling on marine sedimentary habitats analysed by sediment profile imagery
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. - 0022-0981. ; 285, s. 465-477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Demersal trawling causes one of the most widespread physical and biological changes in marine shallow and shelf sedimentary habitats: trawl otter boards may create furrows in the sediment surface, while trawl nets and attached weights scrape the sediment surface. As a consequence, benthic animals are disturbed or killed, and resuspension of particles increase. The impact of trawling on benthic animals has traditionally been analysed by changes in species composition and abundance, whereas frequency and distribution of trawl tracks are frequently analysed by side-scan sonar. We have used sediment profile images (SPIs) (30 x 22 cm) and observed furrows and other physical disturbances on the sediment surface that we attribute to trawling. In a manipulative experimental trawl study in Sweden (BACI design), significant impacts were found in trawled benthic habitats (73-93 m deep) compared with pre-trawling conditions and with reference areas. In particular, furrows from trawl boards had a severe ecological impact. In the Gulf of Lions (northwest Mediterranean), similar patterns were observed in the vast majority of 76 images taken at random at depths between 35 and 88 m in four different areas. Epifauna and polychaete tubes were generally either rare or not observed at all on trawled sediment surfaces. Burrows and feeding voids were, however, frequently present in some trawled areas and seemed to be comparatively less affected. Such biogenic structures in the sediment were generally associated with rather deep (3-4 cm) mean apparent redox profile discontinuities (aRPDs), which were measured digitally as the visible division zone between oxidised (sub-oxic) and reduced sediments. Increased roughness caused by the trawl boards acting on the sediment surface, e.g. depressions and protrusions, could have effects on sediment solute fluxes. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eutrophication and persistent pollutants are two of the main environmental problems in European marine and freshwater ecosystems. As they tend to co-occur, interactive processes between eutrophication and contaminants are suggested, that may lead to environmental effects that cannot be predicted from each process alone. In order to predict the consequences of remedial measures (changing the input of organic matter, nutrients and contaminants) it is important to understand mechanisms that alter the bioavailability and fate of contaminants. The environmental risks will depend on the speciation of contaminants and their association to media and matter and by that means affect exposure. Furthermore, the risks will depend on the mobility of the substances and their pathways in food chains. In 1995, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency initiated a 5-year research program Interactions between EUtrophication and CONtaminants (EUCON). A background document was prepared listing a number of relevant questions and hypotheses. On the basis of this document a program was launched, addressing the problems related to the interaction between eutrophication and contaminants (persistent organic compounds and trace metals) in the marine environment, with focus on the Baltic Sea, and in lakes. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art, hypotheses and highlights from the research program with emphasis on the implications and applications of the results.

  • Ingår i: Eur Heart J. - 0195-668X. ; 25:6, s. 523-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: Hyperhomocysteinaemia is a risk factor for congestive heart failure, especially in women. We investigated if homocysteine promotes left ventricular (LV) remodelling. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined cross-sectional relations of plasma total homocysteine to echocardiographic LV structure and function in 2697 Framingham Heart Study participants (mean age 58 years, 58% women) free of heart failure and previous myocardial infarction. Adjusting for age and height, plasma homocysteine was positively related to LV mass, wall thickness, and relative wall thickness in women (p=0.0004-0.04), but not in men (p=0.28-0.68). Adjusting additionally for other clinical covariates, the relations of plasma homocysteine to LV mass and wall thickness in women remained statistically significant, but the relation to relative wall thickness became of borderline significance (1.92 g, 0.01 cm, and 0.29% increase, respectively, for a 1-SD increase in ln[homocysteine], p=0.01-0.08). LV mass and wall thickness were higher in the fourth quartile of plasma homocysteine compared to the lower three in all models in women (p=0.0003-0.02), but not in men (p=0.25-0.78). Plasma homocysteine was not related to left atrial size or LV fractional shortening in either sex. CONCLUSION: In our community-based sample, plasma homocysteine was directly related to LV mass and wall thickness in women but not in men.

  • Randomized study on adjuvant chemotherapy in stage I high-risk ovarian cancer with evaluation of DNA-ploidy as prognostic instrument
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Annals of oncology : official journal of the European Society for Medical Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-7534. ; 11:3, s. 8-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Adjuvant chemotherapy versus observation and chemotherapy at progression was evaluated in 162 patients in a prospective randomized multicenter study. We also evaluated DNA-measurements as an additional prognostic factor.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients received adjuvant carboplatin AUC 7 every 28 days for six courses (n = 81) or no adjuvant treatment (n = 81). Eligibility included surgically staged and treated patients with FIGO stage I disease, grade 1 aneuploid or grade 2 or 3 non-clear cell carcinomas or clear cell carcinomas. Disease-free (DFS) and disease-specific (DSS) survival were end-points.RESULTS: Median follow-up time was 46 months and progression was observed in 20 patients in the treatment group and 19 in the control group. Estimated five-year DFS and DSS were 70% and 86% in the treatment group and 71% and 85% in the control group. The hazard ratio was 0.98 (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.52-1.83) regarding DFS and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.37-2.36) regarding DSS. No significant differences in DFS or DSS could be seen when the log-rank test was stratified for prognostic variables. Therefore, data from both groups were pooled for the analysis of prognostic factors. DNA-ploidy (P = 0.003), extracapsular growth (P = 0.005), tumor rupture (P = 0.04), and WHO histologic grade (P = 0.04) were significant independent prognostic factors for DFS with P < 0.0001 for the model in the multivariate Cox analysis. FIGO substage (P = 0.01), DNA ploidy (P < 0.05), and histologic grade (P = 0.05) were prognostic for DSS with a P-value for the model < 0.0001.CONCLUSIONS: Due to the small number of patients the study was inconclusive as regards the question of adjuvant chemotherapy. The survival curves were superimposable, but with wide confidence intervals. DNA-ploidy adds objective independent prognostic information regarding both DFS and DSS in early ovarian cancer.
