  • Diskursiv arbetsmiljö : Ett nytt perspektiv på organisatorisk arbetsmiljö
  • 2020

  • Intestinal function, microflora and nutrient intake of children after administration of a fermented oat product containing Lactobacillus plantarum DSM 9843 (299v)
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0891-060X .- 1651-2235. ; 15:4, s. 160-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of the study was to evaluate the intestinal tolerance of a newly developed food containing Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, in children. The effects of consumption of the product on the children's nutrient intake were also followed, in a separate study. The tolerance study was parallel, double-blind, and included 69 children between 6 months and 3 years of age, randomized into two groups. One of the groups consumed a fermented oat product (1×109 cfu L. plantarum 299v/g) for 3 weeks, while the other group consumed a placebo product. We analysed the subjects by intention to treat and also carried out an analysis of subjects who had a mean intake of >100 g study product per day. After consumption for 3 weeks, the content of L. plantarum 299v in faeces increased significantly in the test group compared with the placebo group (p<0.001) and mean log10 cfu/g was 8.7 (intention to treat analysis). Also, the total content of lactobacilli increased and was significantly higher compared with the placebo group (p<0.001). The same result was also obtained when the data for the subjects who had a higher consumption of the study products were analysed. There were no differences in reported gastrointestinal function between the groups. The effects of the fermented oat product on the children's nutrient intake were followed in 12 children aged 1-3 years. Inclusion of the fermented oat product that was enriched with iron and ascorbic acid led to a significantly higher intake of several nutrients like energy, carbohydrates (g, E%), dietary fibre, iron and zinc. In conclusion, the children tolerated the fermented oat product well, the faecal microflora was positively altered and the children's nutritional intake was improved. Keywords: children, microflora, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, probiotic bacteria, intestinal tolerance, nutrient intake.

  • Climate change mitigation efforts among transportation and manufacturing companies : The current state of efforts in Sweden according to available documentation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 196, s. 588-593
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globally, transportation and manufacturing emit large amount of greenhouse gases that needs to be lowered for reaching agreed upon slim ate goals. In this context evidence of mitigation activities among eighty-five companies and their forty-five parent companies in these two polluting sectors were traced focusing on a country that has committed itself to leading the implementation of ambitious climate mitigation goals worldwide. Documentation from the companies in the transportation and manufacturing sectors was scrutinized (yearly reports, homepages and sustainability reports, if available) for evidence of any mitigation efforts, including emissions reporting and reduction goals. The study's results found that two thirds of the companies seemed to have done nothing to mitigate climate change, while efforts in the remaining companies were modest at best; mitigation activities among the forty-five parent companies were only slightly more ambitious. The implications of these depressing findings are discussed in the light of possible caveats and the possibilities of new policy measures such as gender quotas in company boards. The conclusion is that the study's results most likely reflect reality in the studied sectors and that novel approaches and more sector oriented research is needed in the quest for a carbon-neutral society..

  • Biomechanical properties of common carotid arteries assessed by circumferential 2D strain and β stiffness index in patients with ankylosing spondylitis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rheumatology. - 0315-162X. ; 48:3, s. 352-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) related to atherosclerosis, preceded by arterial stiffness. We aimed to examine common carotid artery (CCA) biomechanical properties using ultrasound to calculate β stiffness index (indicating arterial stiffness) and, a more recently developed technique, 2-dimensional (2D) speckle tracking strain (indicating arterial motion and deformation, strain) to (1) compare with age- and sex-matched controls, and (2) analyze relationships between strain and stiffness with disease characteristics and traditional risk factors for CVD in patients with AS. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, a cohort of 149 patients with AS, mean age 55.3 ± 11.2 years, 102 (68.5%) men, and 146 (98%) HLA-B27–positive, were examined. Bilateral CCA were examined for circumferential 2D strain and β stiffness index. A subgroup of 46 patients was compared with 46 age- and sex-matched controls, both groups without hypertensive disease, diabetes, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Results. Mean bilateral circumferential 2D strain was lower in AS patients compared with controls (7.9 ± 2.6% vs 10.3 ± 1.9%, P < 0.001), whereas mean bilateral β stiffness index was higher (13.1 ± 1.7 mmHg/mm vs 12.3 ± 1.3 mmHg/mm, P = 0.02). In multivariable linear regression analyses, strain was associated with age, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, history of anterior uveitis, and treatment with conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD) and/or biological DMARD (R2 0.33), while stiffness was associated with age (R2 0.19). Conclusion. Both CCA circumferential 2D strain and β stiffness index differed between patients with AS and controls. Strain was associated with AS-related factors and age, whereas only age was associated with stiffness, suggesting that the obtained results reflect different pathogenic vascular processes.

  • Five centuries of Stockholm winter/spring temperatures reconstructed from documentary evidenceand instrumental observations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Climatic Change. - Netherlands : Springer. - 0165-0009 .- 1573-1480. ; 101:1-2, s. 109-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historical documentary sources, reflecting different port activities in Stockholm, are utilised to derive a 500-year winter/spring temperature reconstruction for the region. These documentary sources reflect sea ice conditions in the harbour inlet and those series that overlap with the instrumental data correlate well with winter/spring temperatures. By refining dendroclimatological methods, the time-series were composited to a mean series and calibrated (1756–1841;r2 = 66%) against Stockholm January–April temperatures. Strong verification was confirmed (1842–1892; r2 = 60%; RE/CE = 0.55). By including the instrumental data, the quantified (QUAN) reconstruction indicates that recent two decades have been the warmest period for the last 500 years. Coldest conditions occurred during the 16th/17th and early 19th centuries. An independent qualitative (QUAL)historical index was also derived for the Stockholm region. Comparison between QUAN and QUAL shows good coherence at inter-annual time-scales, but QUAL distinctly appears to lack low frequency information. Comparison is also made to other winter temperature based annually resolved records for the Baltic region.Between proxy coherence is generally good although it decreases going back in time with the 1500–1550 period being the weakest period—possibly reflecting data quality issues in the different reconstructions.

  • Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist is associated with both lipid metabolism and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology. - 0392-856X .- 1593-098X. ; 25:4, s. 617-620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: There is a relationship between cardiovascular morbidity, inflammatory activity, and changes in the lipid profile in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), although the mechanisms are not fully elaborated. Recent know-ledge that white adipose tissue (WAT) is a producer of immunologically and metabolically active substances gives another perspective to study.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) and variables associated with WAT and inflammation in RA.METHODS: Anthropometric, inflammatory and metabolic variables were assessed in 23 women with RA and 23 matched controls. Spearman, partial correlation and factor analyses were performed.RESULTS: Inflammatory markers were increased in patients. In both groups, IL-1Ra correlated with leptin independent of age and BMI. IL-1Ra also correlated with haptoglobin and apolipoprotein (Apo) B in patients and with soluble TNF receptor (sTNFR) 1 in controls. In factor analysis, three latent factors were identified among patients. The first loaded on IL-1Ra, leptin, BMI, ApoB and body fat content (BF%), the second loaded on IL1-Ra and sTNF-receptors and the third showed inverse loadings on ApoA-I together with loadings on ESR, haptoglobin, orosomucoid, BF% and BMI.CONCLUSION: IL-1Ra was associated with markers of inflammation and with fat-related factors in RA patients, suggesting a dualistic relationship of IL-1Ra in RA. IL-1Ra correlated independently with leptin in both patients and controls, indicating a relationship between inflammation and leptin.

  • Circulation dynamics and its influence on European and Mediterranean January–April climate over the past half millennium : results and insights from instrumental data, documentary evidence and coupled climate models
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Climatic Change. - Netherlands : Springer. - 0165-0009 .- 1573-1480. ; 101:1-2, s. 201-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use long instrumental temperature series together with available field reconstructions of sea-level pressure (SLP) and three-dimensional climate modelsimulations to analyze relations between temperature anomalies and atmospheric circulation patterns over much of Europe and the Mediterranean for the late winter/early spring (January–April, JFMA) season. A Canonical Correlation Analysis(CCA) investigates interannual to interdecadal covariability between a new gridded SLP field reconstruction and seven long instrumental temperature series covering the past 250 years. We then present and discuss prominent atmospheric circulation patterns related to anomalous warm and cold JFMA conditions within different European areas spanning the period 1760–2007. Next, using a data assimilation technique, we link gridded SLP data with a climate model (EC-Bilt-Clio) for a better dynamical understanding of the relationship between large scale circulationand European climate. We thus present an alternative approach to reconstruct climate for the pre-instrumental period based on the assimilated model simulations.Furthermore, we present an independent method to extend the dynamic circulation analysis for anomalously cold European JFMA conditions back to the sixteenth century. To this end, we use documentary records that are spatially representative for the long instrumental records and derive, through modern analogs, large-scale SLP, surface temperature and precipitation fields. The skill of the analog method is tested in the virtual world of two three-dimensional climate simulations (ECHOGand HadCM3). This endeavor offers new possibilities to both constrain climate model into a reconstruction mode (through the assimilation approach) and to better assess documentary data in a quantitative way.

  • Detecting individual extracellular vesicles using a multicolor in situ proximity ligation assay with flow cytometric readout
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flow cytometry is a powerful method for quantitative and qualitative analysis of individual cells. However, flow cytometric analysis of extracellular vesicles (EVs), and the proteins present on their surfaces has been hampered by the small size of the EVs - in particular for the smallest EVs, which can be as little as 40 nm in diameter, the limited number of antigens present, and their low refractive index. We addressed these limitations for detection and characterization of EV by flow cytometry through the use of multiplex and multicolor in situ proximity ligation assays (in situ PLA), allowing each detected EV to be easily recorded over background noise using a conventional flow cytometer. By targeting sets of proteins on the surface that are specific for distinct classes of EVs, the method allows for selective recognition of populations of EVs in samples containing more than one type of EVs. The method presented herein opens up for analyses of EVs using flow cytometry for their characterization and quantification.

  • A Validation Study of an Interviewer-Administered Short Food Frequency Questionnaire in Assessing Dietary Vitamin D and Calcium Intake in Swedish Children
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 9:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vitamin D and calcium are essential nutrients with a range of biological effects of public health relevance. This study aimed to validate a short food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) against a three-day food record (3D record), assessing the intake of vitamin D and calcium in Swedish children during wintertime. In a double-blinded, randomized food-based intervention study on the effect of feeding different daily doses of vitamin D supplement to 5-7-year-old children (n = 85), 79 (93%) participants completed SFFQ1 at baseline and SFFQ2 after the intervention, and 72 were informed to fill in a 3D record. The 28 (39%) children who completed the 3D record were included in this validation study. The baseline level of serum-25 hydroxy vitamin D [S-25(OH)D] was used as a biomarker. The correlation between all three instruments were moderate to strong. SFFQ2 and the 3D record correlated moderately to S-25(OH)D. Bland-Altman analysis showed that SFFQ2 overestimated vitamin D intake by on average 0.6 mu g/day, (limits of agreement (LOA) 5.7 and -4.6 mu g/day), whereas the intake of calcium was underestimated by on average 29 mg/day, (LOA 808 and -865 mg/day). Finally, the validity coefficient calculated for vitamin D using the method of triad was high (0.75). In conclusion, this SFFQ, assessed by a dietician, is a valid tool to assess dietary vitamin D and calcium intake in groups of young children.

  • Not transparent and incomprehensible : A qualitative user study of an AI-empowered financial advisory system
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Data and Information Management. - : Elsevier. - 2543-9251.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AI-empowered and algorithm-driven automated financial advisory systems, also known as Robo-advisors, have been rapidly implemented by service providers and customers in financial service markets. Yet, few empirical studies investigate customers’ experience interacting with fully functional Robo-advisors in real-life scenarios. Also, it is still unknown how the design of the automated system can affect customers’ perception and adoption of this new technology. To mitigate these gaps, 24 participants with different levels of experience and understanding of financial investment were asked to use a Robo-advisor from a retail bank and perform the tasks. By conducting observations and retrospective post-test interviews, we find that participants do not fully perceive the social aspects supposed to be provided by Robo-advisors. The overarching problems are, among others, a lack of transparency and incomprehensible information. This results in distrust of the results generated by this system, which negatively affects customers’ adoption of the investment advice provided by the Robo-advisor. The potential of interactive data visualization is also detected. This work contributes to the understanding of customers regarding their perception and adoption based on their use of a functional Robo-advisor and proposes design takeaways for transparent and comprehensible automated advisory systems in financial service contexts.

  • Understanding Customers in AI-empowered Financial Advisory Systems and Services : An interdisciplinary study of Robo-advisors
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • AI-empowered financial advisory services, also known as robo-advisors, present both innovations and challenges as they replace human financial advisors, reshape customer service, and attract customers with different characteristics than their predecessors. Therefore, it is more important than ever for financial service providers to understand customers’ perception and experience of using robo-advisors on the service front line. However, our systematic literature review indicates that research on robo-advisors is scattered across different disciplines with a narrow focus on sharing knowledge across fields. Moreover, empirical studies on robo-advisors have primarily focused on customer acceptance and intentional behaviors, often based on data collected through surveys. Also, these studies have paid less attention to the role of robo-advisor design and the context in which customers interact with fully functional robo-advisors in real-life situations. To address these gaps, this thesis aims to synthesize interdisciplinary knowledge and identify gaps in the research on robo-advisors. It also aims to explore customers’ experience of using and interacting with robo-advisors and how the experience affects their perception and adoption of the service. By conducting a systematic literature review and a qualitative user study, this thesis finds that customers’ perceptions of robo-advisors often do not meet their expectations. Nontransparency and incomprehensible information about the system’s decision-making are significant barriers to customers’ adoption of robo-advisors. This thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of customers in AI-empowered financial advisory services by using theories and approaches across different disciplines. It also provides practical implications for practitioners in the robo-advisory service industry.

  • European temperature records of the past five centuries based on documentary/instrumental information compared to climate simulations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Climatic Change. - Netherlands : Springer. - 0165-0009 .- 1573-1480. ; 101:1-2, s. 143-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two European temperature reconstructions for the past half-millennium,January-to-April air temperature for Stockholm (Sweden) and seasonal temperaturefor a Central European region, both derived from the analysis of documentarysources and long instrumental records, are compared with the output of climate simulations with the model ECHO-G. The analysis is complemented by comparisonswith the long (early)-instrumental record of Central England Temperature(CET). Both approaches to study past climates (simulations and reconstructions)are burdened with uncertainties. The main objective of this comparative analysisis to identify robust features and weaknesses in each method which may help toimprove models and reconstruction methods. The results indicate a general agreementbetween simulations obtained with temporally changing external forcings andthe reconstructed Stockholm and CET records for the multi-centennial temperaturetrend over the recent centuries, which is not reproduced in a control simulation. This trend is likely due to the long-term change in external forcing. Additionally, the Stockholm reconstruction and the CET record also show a clear multi-decadalwarm episode peaking around AD 1730, which is absent in the simulations. Neitherthe reconstruction uncertainties nor the model internal climate variability caneasily explain this difference. Regarding the interannual variability, the Stockholmseries displays, in some periods, higher amplitudes than the simulations but thesedifferences are within the statistical uncertainty and further decrease if output froma regional model driven by the global model is used. The long-term trend of theCentral European temperature series agrees less well with the simulations. Thereconstructed temperature displays, for all seasons, a smaller difference between thepresent climate and past centuries than is seen in the simulations. Possible reasons forthese differences may be related to a limitation of the traditional ‘indexing’ techniquefor converting documentary evidence to temperature values to capture long-termclimate changes, because the documents often reflect temperatures relative to thecontemporary authors’ own perception of what constituted ‘normal’ conditions. Bycontrast, the amplitude of the simulated and reconstructed inter-annual variabilityagrees rather well.
