  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Cultural values, sources of guidance, and their relevance to managerial behavior - A 47-nation study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. - : Sage Publications. - 0022-0221 .- 1552-5422. ; 33:2, s. 188-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data are presented showing how middle managers in 47 countries report handling eight specific work events. The data are used to test the ability of cultural value dimensions derived from the work of Hofstede. Trompenaars, and Schwartz to predict the specific sources of guidance on which managers rely. Focusing on sources of guidance is expected to provide a more precise basis than do generalized measures of values for understanding the behaviors that prevail within different cultures. Values are strongly predictive of reliance on those sources of guidance that are relevant to vertical relationships within organizations. Hock ever, values are less successful in predicting reliance on peers and on more tacit sources of guidance. Explaining national differences in these neglected aspects of organizational processes will require greater sensitivity to the culture-specific contexts within which they occur.

  • Alignment delays in the N = Z nuclei Kr-72, Sr-76, and Zr-80
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 8713:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ground state rotational bands of the N = Z nuclei Kr-72, Sr-76, and Zr-80 have been extended into the angular momentum region where rotation alignment of particles is normally expected. By measuring the moments of inertia of these bands we have observed a consistent increase in the rotational frequency required to start pair breaking, when compared to neighboring nuclei. Kr-72 shows the most marked effect. It has been widely suggested that these delayed alignments arise from np-pairing correlations. However, alignment frequencies are very sensitive to shape degrees of freedom and normal pairing, so the new experimental observations are still open to interpretation.

  • High-dose atorvastatin enhances the decline in inflammatory markers in patients with acute coronary syndromes in the MIRACL study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - 0009-7322 .- 1524-4539. ; 108:13, s. 1560-1566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background - Inflammation promotes acute coronary syndromes and ensuing clinical complications. Although statins reduce inflammatory markers in asymptomatic adults or in patients with stable angina, the effect of statins on the markedly heightened inflammation in patients with acute coronary syndromes is unknown. Methods and Results - We measured C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in 2402 subjects enrolled the Myocardial Ischemia Reduction with Aggressive Cholesterol Lowering (MIRACL) study. Subjects with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction were randomized to atorvastatin 80 mg/d or placebo within 24 to 96 hours of hospital admission and treated for 16 weeks. The effect of treatment on inflammatory markers was assessed by ANCOVA after adjustment for presenting syndrome, country, and initial level of marker. All 3 markers were markedly elevated at randomization and declined over the 16 weeks in both treatment groups. Compared with placebo, atorvastatin significantly reduced CRP, -83% (95% CI, -84%, -81%) versus -74% (95% CI, -75%, -71%) (P<0.0001) and SAA, -80% (95% CI, -82%, -78%) versus -77% (-79%, -75%) (P=0.0006) but not IL-6, -55% (95% CI, -57%, -53%) versus -53% (95% CI, -55%, -51%) (P=0.3). Reductions in CRP and SAA were observed in patients with unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, with initial LDL cholesterol <3.2 of =3.2 mmol/L (125 mg/dL), age =65 or <65 years, and in men and women. By 16 weeks, CRP was 34% lower with atorvastatin than with placebo. Conclusions - High-dose atorvastatin potentiated the decline in inflammation in patients with acute coronary syndromes. This supports the value of early statin therapy in these patients.

  • Contact corrosion resistance between the cathode and current collector plate in the molten carbonate fuel cell
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 148:1, s. A38-A43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The corrosion layer Formed in the contact between the cathode and the current collector is one factor limiting the cathode performance in molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC). In order to investigate the contribution to the total polarization of the contact resistance, electrochemical experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale fuel cell unit with a specially designed current collector. Two cathode materials, NiO and LiCoO2, were investigated to elucidate the impact of the cathode material on the formed corrosion layer. Polarization measurements as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used. The method works well for NiO electrodes. However, due to the poor electronic conductivity in the LiCoO2 electrode, the experimental results become difficult to evaluate due to a nonuniform potential distribution. The contact resistance between the cathode and the current collector contributes with a large value to the total cathode polarization. The corrosion layer in case of the LiCoO2 cathode was iron-rich and has a thickness of about 20 mum after 8 weeks operation of the fuel cell. Ln the case of the NiO cathode, a nickel-rich corrosion layer of about 15 mum was formed after 5 weeks operation of the fuel cell.

  • Development and performance characterisation of new electrocatalysts for PEMFC
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 106:1-2, s. 206-214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New electrocatalysts based on Pt, Pt-Ru and Pt-Pd have been prepared by the microemulsion method. This method allows the production of a very narrow size distribution of metal particles, with an average size smaller than that of conventional electrocatalysts prepared by impregnation. Eight membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with an active surface area of 50 cm(2) were characterised in a single fuel cell. The MEAs consist of Nation 117 as membrane and a commercial electrocatalyst (40% Pt/C from E-TEK) on the cathode side, Four MEAs have electrocatalysts prepared by the microemulsion technique and the other four have commercial electrocatalysts on the anode side. The performance of the eight MEAs was evaluated by measuring the fuel cell polarisation curves and the internal resistance with H-2/O-2 and H-2/air, at 60 T and pressure in the range from I to 3 bar. The MEAs with the electrocatalysts prepared by microemulsion showed a performance comparable to that of the MEAs with commercial electrocatalysts. The satisfactory results obtained show that microemulsion is a promising method for the preparation of electrocatalysts for fuel cells. Further effort will be devoted to the optimisation of the method, mainly, the deposition of the metal particles on the carbon support, which it is expected to enhance the fuel cell performance.

  • Metal ion enhanced binding of amd3100 to asp-262 in the cxcr4 receptor.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Biochemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0006-2960 .- 1520-4995. ; 42:3, s. 710-717
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The affinity of AMD3100, a symmetrical nonpeptide antagonist composed of two 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) rings connected through a 1,4-dimethylene(phenylene) linker to the CXCR4 chemokine receptor was increased 7, 36, and 50-fold, respectively, by incorporation of the following: Cu2+, Zn2+, or Ni2+ into the cyclam rings of the compound. The rank order of the transition metal ions correlated with the calculated binding energy between free acetate and the metal ions coordinated in a cyclam ring. Construction of AMD3100 substituted with only a single Cu2+ or Ni2+ ion demonstrated that the increase in binding affinity of the metal ion substituted bicyclam is achieved through an enhanced interaction of just one of the ring systems. Mutational analysis of potential metal ion binding residues in the main ligand binding crevice of the CXCR4 receptor showed that although binding of the bicyclam is dependent on both Asp171 and Asp262, the enhancing effect of the metal ion was selectively eliminated by substitution of Asp262 located at the extracellular end of TM-VI. It is concluded that the increased binding affinity of the metal ion substituted AMD3100 is obtained through enhanced interaction of one of the cyclam ring systems with the carboxylate group of Asp262. It is suggested that this occurs through a strong concomitant interaction of one of the oxygen's directly with the metal ion and the other oxygen to one of the nitrogens of the cyclam ring through a hydrogen bond.

  • Sertraline treatment of major depression in patients with acute MI or unstable angina
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: JAMA. - 0098-7484. ; 288:6, s. 701-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CONTEXT: Major depressive disorder (MDD) occurs in 15% to 23% of patients with acute coronary syndromes and constitutes an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality. However, no published evidence exists that antidepressant drugs are safe or efficacious in patients with unstable ischemic heart disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sertraline treatment of MDD in patients hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction (MI) or unstable angina and free of other life-threatening medical conditions. DESIGN AND SETTING: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted in 40 outpatient cardiology centers and psychiatry clinics in the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. Enrollment began in April 1997 and follow-up ended in April 2001. PATIENTS: A total of 369 patients with MDD (64% male; mean age, 57.1 years; mean 17-item Hamilton Depression [HAM-D] score, 19.6; MI, 74%; unstable angina, 26%). INTERVENTION: After a 2-week single-blind placebo run-in, patients were randomly assigned to receive sertraline in flexible dosages of 50 to 200 mg/d (n = 186) or placebo (n = 183) for 24 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary (safety) outcome measure was change from baseline in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF); secondary measures included surrogate cardiac measures and cardiovascular adverse events, as well as scores on the HAM-D scale and Clinical Global Impression Improvement scale (CGI-I) in the total randomized sample, in a group with any prior history of MDD, and in a more severe MDD subgroup defined a priori by a HAM-D score of at least 18 and history of 2 or more prior episodes of MDD. RESULTS: Sertraline had no significant effect on mean (SD) LVEF (sertraline: baseline, 54% [10%]; week 16, 54% [11%]; placebo: baseline, 52% [13%]; week 16, 53% [13%]), treatment-emergent increase in ventricular premature complex (VPC) runs (sertraline: 13.1%; placebo: 12.9%), QTc interval greater than 450 milliseconds at end point (sertraline: 12%; placebo: 13%), or other cardiac measures. All comparisons were statistically nonsignificant (P> or = .05). The incidence of severe cardiovascular adverse events was 14.5% with sertraline and 22.4% with placebo. In the total randomized sample, the CGI-I (P =.049), but not the HAM-D (P =.14), favored sertraline. The CGI-I responder rates for sertraline were significantly higher than for placebo in the total sample (67% vs 53%; P =.01), in the group with at least 1 prior episode of depression (72% vs 51%; P =.003), and in the more severe MDD group (78% vs 45%; P =.001). In the latter 2 groups, both CGI-I and HAM-D measures were significantly better in those assigned to sertraline. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that sertraline is a safe and effective treatment for recurrent depression in patients with recent MI or unstable angina and without other life-threatening medical conditions.

  • Effect of atorvastatin on risk of recurrent cardiovascular events after an acute coronary syndrome associated with high soluble CD40 ligand in the Myocardial Ischemia Reduction with Aggressive Cholesterol Lowering (MIRACL) study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - 0009-7322 .- 1524-4539. ; 110:4, s. 386-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background - Patients with acute coronary syndromes have elevated plasma levels of the proinflammatory, prothrombotic cytokine CD40 ligand (sCD40L). Statins inhibit CD40L signaling in vitro, but there are no prospective studies of statins and sCD40L in acute coronary syndromes. Methods and Results - We measured sCD40L in subjects with an acute coronary syndrome enrolled in the Myocardial Ischemia Reduction with Aggressive Cholesterol Lowering (MIRACL) study. Subjects were randomized in this double-blind trial to atorvastatin 80 mg/d or placebo for 16 weeks. Plasma CD40L was measured from 2908 (94%) of 3086 subjects at baseline and 2352 (76%) at 16 weeks. Odds ratios (Ors) and 95% Cis from logistic regression models assessed the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events over 16 weeks (death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, and worsening angina requiring rehospitalization) in the placebo group from baseline sCD40L and the effect of atorvastatin on the risk associated with CD40L in all subjects. The effects of atorvastatin on plasma concentrations of CD40L were assessed by Wilcoxon tests. There was a threshold effect, with only high sCD40L (>90th centile) being a risk factor for a recurrent cardiovascular event (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.25 to 2.77). This risk was abolished by atorvastatin (OR 1.09, 95% CI 0.69 to 1.76), which reduced the risk by 48%. Atorvastatin had only a modest effect on sCD40L (P=0-08). Conclusions - In patients with acute coronary syndromes, atorvastatin abrogated the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events associated with high sCD40L. Early statin therapy after acute coronary syndromes counters the risk associated with elevated sCD40L.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 87:02-jan, s. 101-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pt/Pd bimetallic combination and Raney Ni catalysts were employed in long-term electrochemical assessment of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in 6 M KOH. Steady-state current vs. potential measurements of the gas diffusion electrodes have shown high activity for these types of catalysts. Durability tests of the electrodes have shown increased stability for the Pt/Pd-based catalysts than the Raney Ni at a constant load of 100 mA/cm(2) and at temperatures of 55 degrees C and 60 degrees C, respectively. Surface, structural and chemical analyses by BET surface area, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the composite electrode/catalyst both before and after the electrochemical testing.

  • Effect of sintering procedures in development of LiCoO2-cathodes for the molten carbonate fuel cell
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 90:2, s. 224-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • LiCoO2-powder was synthesized from carbonate precursors by calcination in air. Greentapes were tape-cast using a non-aqueous slurry and 10 mu m plastic spheres as pore formers. Sintering was carried out in air at 850-950 degrees C and in argon/air at 500/750 degrees C, The two sintering procedures led to very different sub-micron morphologies, with the primary particles being much smaller in the latter case. The electrochemical performance at 650 degrees C, in terms of overpotential at 160 mA/cm(2), for the air- and argon/air-sintered electrodes was 57 and 81 mV, respectively. The potential drop due to contact resistance between electrode and current collector was estimated to be 100 and 70 mV, respectively. The electrode materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Hg-porosimetry, the BET-method (N-2-adsorption), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS), carbon analysis and a van der Pauw conductivity measurement set-up.

  • Upstream stimulating factor affects human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) long terminal repeat-directed transcription in a cell-specific manner, independently of the HIV-1 subtype and the core-negative regulatory element
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: The Journal of general virology. - : Microbiology Society. - 0022-1317 .- 1465-2099. ; 82:Pt 3, s. 547-559
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is classified into subtypes on the basis of phylogenetic analysis of sequence differences. Inter- and intra-subtype polymorphism extends throughout the genome, including the long terminal repeat (LTR). In this study, the importance of the upstream stimulating factor (USF)-binding site (E-box) in the core-negative regulatory element (NRE) of the LTR of HIV-1 subtypes A, B, C, D, E and G was investigated. In vivo, USF was found to repress transcription directed from representative HIV-1 LTR sequences of all the subtypes tested in an epithelial cell line, yet activate the same transcription in a T-cell line. Mutation of the core-NRE USF site of the representative subtype B LTR did not affect the cell-specific, subtype-independent, dual role of USF.In vitrobinding assays showed that recombinant USF43interacts with the core-NRE from subtypes B and C, but not A, D, E or G. Thus, USF affects LTR-directed transcription in a cell-specific manner, independently of both the HIV-1 subtype from which the LTR was derived and the core-NRE USF site sequences.

    • It is not entirely clear from the present molecular analysis how the SWI protein may function in the ecdysone induced cascade. Currently all predictions agree in that SWI is very unlikely to be a nuclear protein. Thus it probably exercises its control of "late" ecdysone genes indirectly. Apparently the genetic regulation of ecdysone signaling is much more complex then was previously anticipated.

  • Polytene chromosome interband DNA is organized into nucleosomes
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Molecular Genetics and Genomics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-4615 .- 1617-4623. ; 265:2, s. 311-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The molecular basis that underlies the maintenance of polytene chromosome banding pattern remains unclear. To test the possibility that the decondensed state of interbands is provoked by the absence of nucleosomes, we have subjected chromatin from the previously defined 61C7/C8 interband to digestion with micrococcal nuclease. We have demonstrated that interband DNA forms nucleosomes both in salivary glands and in the bulk of larval tissues. This finding strongly suggests that the difference in compaction between DNA in polytene chromosome bands and interbands results from differences that appear at the higher levels of chromatin organization.

  • High-dose atorvastatin reduces total plasma levels of oxidized phospholipids and immune complexes present on apolipoprotein B-100 in patients with acute coronary syndromes in the MIRACL trial
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - 0009-7322 .- 1524-4539. ; 110:11, s. 1406-1412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background-Oxidized phospholipids (OxPL) are present within atherosclerotic plaques and bound by lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] in plasma. This study evaluated the impact of atorvastatin on oxidized LDL (OxLDL) in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Methods and Results-OxLDL-E06 (OxPL content on apolipoprotein B-100 [apoB] detected by antibody E06), apoB-100 immune complexes (apoB-IC), OxLDL autoantibodies, and Lp(a) levels were measured in 2341 patients at baseline and after 16 weeks of treatment with atorvastatin 80 mg/d or placebo. The OxLDL-E06 and apoB-IC data are reported per apoB-100 particle (OxPL/apoB, IC/apoB) and as total levels on all apoB-100 particles (total apoB-OxPL and total apoB-IC [eg, OxPL/apoB or IC/apoBXapoB-100 levels]). Compared with baseline values, atorvastatin reduced apoB-100 (-33%), total apoB-OxPL (-29.7%), total apoB-IC IgG (-29.5%), and IgM (-25.7%) (P<0.0001 for all), whereas no change or an increase was observed with placebo. When normalized per apoB-100, compared with placebo, atorvastatin increased OxPL/apoB (9.5% versus -3.9%, P<0.0001) and Lp(a) (8.8% versus -0.7%, (P<0.0001). A strong correlation was noted between OxPL/apoB and Lp(a) (R=0.85, P<0.0001), consistent with previous data that Lp(a) binds OxPL. Conclusions-After atorvastatin treatment, total OxPL on all apoB-100 particles was decreased. However, there was enrichment of OxPL on a smaller pool of apoB-100 particles, in parallel with similar increases in Lp(a), suggesting binding by Lp(a). These data support the hypothesis that atorvastatin promotes mobilization and clearance of proinflammatory OxPL, which may contribute to a reduction in ischemic events after ACS.
