  • Recoil polarization measurements for neutral pion electroproduction at Q(2)=1(GeV/c)(2) near the Delta resonance
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 75:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured angular distributions of differential cross section, beam analyzing power, and recoil polarization for neutral pion electroproduction at Q(2)=1.0 (GeV/c)(2) in 10 bins of 1.17 <= W <= 1.35 GeV across the Delta resonance. A total of 16 independent response functions were extracted, of which 12 were observed for the first time. Comparisons with recent model calculations show that response functions governed by real parts of interference products are determined relatively well near the physical mass, W=M-Delta approximate to 1.232 GeV, but the variation among models is large for response functions governed by imaginary parts, and for both types of response functions, the variation increases rapidly with W > M-Delta. We performed a multipole analysis that adjusts suitable subsets of center dot(pi)<= 2 amplitudes with higher partial waves constrained by baseline models. This analysis provides both real and imaginary parts. The fitted multipole amplitudes are nearly model independent-there is very little sensitivity to the choice of baseline model or truncation scheme. By contrast, truncation errors in the traditional Legendre analysis of N ->Delta quadrupole ratios are not negligible. Parabolic fits to the W dependence around M-Delta for the multiple analysis gives values for Re(S1+/M1+)=(-6.61 +/- 0.18)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=(-2.87 +/- 0.19)% for the p pi(0) channel at W=1.232 GeV and Q(2)=1.0 (GeV/c)(2) that are distinctly larger than those from the Legendre analysis of the same data. Similarly, the multipole analysis gives Re(S0+/M1+)=(+7.1 +/- 0.8)% at W=1.232 GeV, consistent with recent models, while the traditional Legendre analysis gives the opposite sign because its truncation errors are quite severe.

  • Investigation of High-spin States in 53Fe
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 72:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fusion-evaporation reactions Si-28(S-32,1 alpha 2p1n)Fe-53 at 125 MeV and Mg-24(S-32,2p1n)Fe-53 at a 95-MeV beam energy were used to investigate excited states in Fe-53. The combination of the Gammasphere Ge detector array and ancillary devices led to the construction of an extensive level scheme comprising some 90 transitions connecting 40 states. The lifetime of the yrast 25/2(-) state and upper limits for the lifetimes of a number of additional states were determined using the Cologne plunger device coupled to the GASP gamma-ray spectrometer. The experimental results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations using different sets of two-body matrix elements. In particular, predictions on electromagnetic decay properties such as lifetimes, branching ratios, and mixing ratios are studied in detail.

  • Collectivity and configuration mixing in Pb186,188 and Po194
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 97:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of prolate intruder states in Pb186 and oblate intruder states in Po194 have been determined by employing, for the first time, the recoil-decay tagging technique in recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements. In addition, lifetime measurements of prolate states in Pb188 up to the 8+ state were carried out using the recoil-gating method. The B(E2) values have been deduced from which deformation parameters |β2|=0.29(5) and |β2|=0.17(3) for the prolate and the oblate bands, respectively, have been extracted. The results also shed new light on the mixing between different shapes.

  • Quasielastic He-3(e,e(')p)H-2 reaction at Q(2)=1.5 GeV2 for recoil momenta up to 1 GeV/c
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 94:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the quasielastic He-3(e,e(')p)H-2 reaction in perpendicular coplanar kinematics, with the energy and the momentum transferred by the electron fixed at 840 MeV and 1502 MeV/c, respectively. The He-3(e,e(')p)H-2 cross section was measured for missing momenta up to 1000 MeV/c, while the A(TL) asymmetry was extracted for missing momenta up to 660 MeV/c. For missing momenta up to 150 MeV/c, the cross section is described by variational calculations using modern He-3 wave functions. For missing momenta from 150 to 750 MeV/c, strong final-state interaction effects are observed. Near 1000 MeV/c, the experimental cross section is more than an order of magnitude larger than predicted by available theories. The A(TL) asymmetry displays characteristic features of broken factorization with a structure that is similar to that generated by available models.

  • Structure, bonding, and magnetism of cobalt clusters from first-principles calculations
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 76:1, s. 014429-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Co-n clusters (n=2-20) have been investigated using density functional theory within the pseudopotential plane wave method. An unusual hexagonal growth pattern has been observed in the intermediate size range, n=15-20. The cobalt atoms are ferromagnetically ordered and the calculated magnetic moments are found to be higher than that of corresponding hcp bulk value, which are in good agreement with the recent Stern-Gerlach experiments. The average coordination number is found to dominate over the average bond length to determine the effective hybridization and consequently the cluster magnetic moment.

  • Impaired Myocardial Functional Reserve in Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus Without Coronary Artery Disease: Searching for the Possible Link With Congestive Heart Failure in the Myocardial Doppler in Diabetes (MYDID) Study II
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Hypertension. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0895-7061 .- 1941-7225. ; 19:8, s. 851-857
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Although the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN) on myocardial function has recently been studied using tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE), the independent role of both conditions, and the influence of other risk factors on myocardial function has not been completely defined, particularly in absence of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to assess the myocardial functional reserve in patients with DM or HTN with apparently normal left ventricular (LV) systolic function. Methods: Standard and dobutamine stress echocardiography using TDE was performed in 128 subjects: 59 had DM, 20 had HTN, 27 had both DM and HTN (HTN + DM), and 22 subjects were controls (C). Subjects with known CAD and depressed LV function were excluded. In addition, standard two-dimensional and Doppler measurements, LV regional peak systolic (PSV), early (E') and late (A') diastolic velocities, strain (S%) and strain rate (SR), were assessed at rest and peak stress. Results: The LV mass did not differ, although relative wall thickness was significantly higher in subjects with HTN + DM and HTN. The PSV did not differ at rest but was lowest in subjects with HTN + DM at peak stress. The E' wave velocity was significantly lower in subjects with HTN + DM both at rest and during peak stress, as were S% and SR. Conclusions: The addition of DM to HTN has a negative effect on LV systolic and diastolic functions. A depressed myocardial functional reserve might be postulated as one of the pathophysiologic mechanisms for the excessive occurrence of congestive heart failure in patients with DM or HTN.

  • Isolated Type 2 Diabetes mellitus Causes Myocardial Dysfunction That Becomes Worse in the Presence of Cardiovascular Diseases : Results of the Myocardial Doppler in Diabetes (MYDID): Study 1
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Cardiology. - : S. Karger AG. - 0008-6312 .- 1421-9751. ; 103:4, s. 189-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) often suffer disproportionately and have a worse outcome when burdened with cardiovascular complications compared with those without DM. A specific heart muscle disease reportedly caused by DM per se may explain this. We sought to investigate whether an echo Doppler diagnosis of such a myocardial disease is clinically relevant in DM with or without coexistent coronary artery disease (CAD) and/or hypertension ( HTN). Subjects and Methods: Two hundred subjects (127 males, 73 females, 56 +/- 10 years) including controls (n=23), patients with HTN (n=20), CAD (n=35), uncomplicated DM (n=59), DM+HTN (n=27), DM+ CAD (n=16) and DM+CAD+HTN (n=20) underwent tissue Doppler-enhanced dobutamine stress echocardiography. Myocardial function was assessed by measuring left ventricular myocardial peak systolic velocity (PSV) and early diastolic velocity at rest and during peak stress, besides measurements of standard Doppler variables. Results: Average left ventricular PSV at rest was significantly lower in CAD (4.7 +/- 1.5) compared with controls (5.7 center dot +/- 1.2) and in DM+CAD+HTN (4.6 +/- 1.4) compared with DM (5.6 +/- 1.3; all p < 0.05). During peak stress, lower PSV persisted in CAD (9.5 +/- 3.1) and DM+CAD+HTN (8.1 +/- 2.7), while appearing de novo in DM (11.3 +/- 2.6) and HTN (11.0 +/- 2.3) unlike in the controls (12.5 +/- 2.5; all p < 0.001). When pooled together, DM subjects with CAD and/or HTN or both had significantly lower PSV (9.1 +/- 2.7) than those without (10.0 +/- 2.8; p < 0.001). Early diastolic velocity response was equally lower in both groups compared with the controls. Conclusion: The results suggest that dobutamine stress unmasks myocardial functional disturbances caused by uncomplicated DM. The discrete disturbances become quantitatively more pronounced in the presence of coexistent cardiovascular diseases.

  • Microalbuminuria and Left Ventricular Functions in Type 2 Diabetes : A Quantitative Assessment by Stress Echocardiography in the Myocardial Doppler in Diabetes (MYDID) Study III
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cardiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0167-5273 .- 1874-1754. ; 41:6, s. 363-369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Left ventricular (LV) function might be altered in type 2 diabetes (DM) and microalbuminuria (MA) may accentuate the abnormalities. We sought to investigate whether additional LV dysfunction could be unmasked using tissue Doppler (TVE)-enhanced dobutamine stress echocardiography (TVE-DSE) in patients with DM+MA. Methods. Twenty seven DM subjects with MA, (DM+MA), 31 DM subjects without MA (DM-MA), and 13 Controls were evaluated using TVE-DSE. LV basal peak systolic (PSV), early (E') and late (A') diastolic velocities (cm/sec) at rest and peak stress were post-processed. LV filling pressure was assessed using E/E'ratio. Results. PSV and E'velocity at peak stress in the respective three groups were 13.7±1.0, 10.1±1.1, 10.0±1.2 for PSV; and 10.0±1.6, 5.0±1.4, 4.8±1.4 for E' (p < 0.001 for controls vs. both groups). E/E' at rest was 7.9±0.7 in the controls, 10.8±2.4 in DM-MA, and 11.0±2.2 in DM+MA (p < 0.01 Controls vs. both the DM groups). Conclusions. Patients with DM+MA do not have additional LV regional systolic and diastolic dysfunctions compared with DM-MA, as revealed by TVE-DSE, when controlled for glycemia levels, lipids, and treatment strategies.

  • Exercise training decreases the concentration of malonyl-CoA and increases the expression and activity of malonyl-CoA decarboxylase in human muscle
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: American journal of physiology. Endocrinology and metabolism. - : American Physiological Society. - 0193-1849 .- 1522-1555. ; 290:6, s. E1296-E1303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study was designed to evaluate whether changes in malonyl-CoA and the enzymes that govern its concentration occur in human muscle as a result of physical training. Healthy, middle-aged subjects were studied before and after a 12-wk training program that significantly increased V̇o2 maxby 13% and decreased intra-abdominal fat by 17%. Significant decreases (25–30%) in the concentration of malonyl-CoA were observed after training, 24–36 h after the last bout of exercise. They were accompanied by increases in both the activity (88%) and mRNA (51%) of malonyl-CoA decarboxylase (MCD) in muscle but no changes in the phosphorylation of AMP kinase (AMPK, Thr172) or of acetyl-CoA carboxylase. The abundance of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), a regulator of transcription that has been linked to the mediation of MCD expression by PPARα, was also increased (3-fold). In studies also conducted 24–36 h after the last bout of exercise, no evidence of increased whole body insulin sensitivity or fatty acid oxidation was observed during an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp. In conclusion, the concentration of malonyl-CoA is diminished in muscle after physical training, most likely because of PGC-1α-mediated increases in MCD expression and activity. These changes persist after the increases in AMPK activity and whole body insulin sensitivity and fatty acid oxidation, typically caused by an acute bout of exercise in healthy individuals, have dissipated.

    • The reactions 16O(e,e'p) 15N, 208Pb(e,e'p) 207Tl and 12C(e,e'p) 11B were measured in experiments E00-102 and E06-007 performed at JLab (VA, USA) at true quasielastic kinematics (xB = 1) with constant energy (ω) and momentum (q) transferred over a wide pmiss range. These experiments address several open issues in nuclear structure such as the role of relativity and of long-range correlations in the description of nuclei as well as a possible dependence of the spectroscopic factors on Q2. Preliminary experimental results and theoretical predictions from a fully relativistic DWIA model carefully averaged over the experimental acceptances are shown.

  • First principles study of nuclear quadrupole interactions in the molecular solid BF3 and the nature of binding between the molecules
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Hyperfine Interactions. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0304-3843 .- 1572-9540. ; 176:1-3, s. 15-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic structures and nuclear quadrupole interactions (NQI) of the F-19* (I= 5/2) state of F-19 nucleus in solid BF3 are studied using the first-principles Hartree-Fock-Roothaan procedure including many-body electron correlation effects. The calculated NQI parameters, F-19* quadrupole coupling constant (e(2)qQ) and asymmetry parameter eta, were found to be in satisfactory agreement with experiment for the solid state system, which gives confidence in the reliability of the calculated electronic structures in the solid and hence the factors found to influence the binding of the molecules in the solid. It was found that the intermolecular binding energy primarily arises from Van der Waals (VDW) interactions between the molecules resulting from intermolecular many-body effects, which counteract the repulsive interactions between the molecules arising from one-electron Hartree-Fock (HF) theory.

  • Theoretical investigation of nuclear quadrupole interactions in DNA at first-principles level
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Hyperfine Interactions. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0304-3843 .- 1572-9540. ; 181:1-3, s. 81-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the nuclear quadrupole interactions (NQI) of the N-14, O-17 and H-2 nuclei in the nucleobases cytosine, adenine, guanine and thymine in the free state as well as when they are bonded to the sugar ring in DNA, simulated through a CH3 group attached to the nucleobases. The nucleobase uracil, which replaces thymine in RNA, has also been studied. Our results show that there are substantial indirect effects of the bonding with the sugar group in the nucleic acids on the NQI parameters e(2)qQ/h and eta. It is hoped that measurements of these NQI parameters in DNA will be available in the future to compare with our predictions. Our results provide the conclusion that for any property dependent on the electronic structures of the nucleic acids, the effects of the bonding between the nucleobases and the nucleic acid backbones have to be included.

  • An intelligent location management strategy for next generation wireless networks : A rule base approach
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 2005 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. - : IEEE Communications Society. - 0780389662 ; , s. 1365-1370
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work proposes an integrated location management scheme, which essentially rests on our previous work in which we proposed a novel Rule-Based Paging Scheme (RBPS) for reducing the cost for terminal paging in a cellular wireless environment The present work is an enhancement, where we extend our previous work to propose a complete location management scheme. This requires application of RBPS together with a judicious movement based location update (LU) scheme. Numerical results show that proposed integrated location management scheme, which we call, RBPS*, not only attempts to resolve the issue of inherent tradeoff between the cost components, comprising of paging and LU cost, it does reduce the total cost for location management compared to the other schemes referred in this work. RBPS* significantly outperforms RBPS and GSM-adopted blanket paging scheme along with movement based LU. When compared with the popular Shortest Distance First (SDF) scheme, results are again encouraging. The proposed scheme, RBPS*, is a generic one and can be deployed on-line. It has the potential for use in next generation wireless networks, irrespective of any standards.

    • In our earlier work we proposed a novel rule-based approach for locating a mobile terminal (MT) in a mobile cellular wireless networks. The scheme, which we called Rule-Based Paging Scheme (RBPS), significantly outperformed GSM-adopted blanket paging scheme. We have found that when compared with the popular Shortest Distance First (SDF) scheme, results are again encouraging. However, in this work, we have discussed the real time implementation of our proposed scheme and compared performance of the RBPS-adopted blanket paging scheme with GSM-adopted blanket paging scheme, as it is most popularly practiced in real life. The scheme is a generic one and has the potential for use in the next generation wireless networks, irrespective of any standards.

    • This paper presents monitor placement scheme for single node fault detection in optical network. A single fault at a node may generally produce single/many alarms; as a result it becomes very difficult to detect the exact origin of failure. Our two-phased scheme minimizes the placement of the number of monitors to detect the origin of fault in polynomial time. We demonstrate the performance of our scheme on 14-node NSFnet.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic Hyperfine and Nuclear Quadrupole Interactions (HFI and NQI) are now important tools for characterization of systems of interest in materials research and industry. Boron-Trifluoride is an inorganic compound that is very important in this respect as a catalyst in chemical physics research and industry, forming complexes in the process with compounds like ammonia, water and methyl alcohol. The present paper deals with the BF3-NH3 complex and methyl derivatives BF3NHx(CH3)(3-x) for which we have studied the electronic structures, binding energies, and F-19* (I=5/2) nuclear quadrupole interactions using the first-principles Hartree-Fock-Roothaan procedure combined with electron correlation effects. Our results for the F-19* nuclear quadrupole coupling constant (e(2)qQ/h) in units of MHz compare well with experiment. Trends in the binding energies and NQI parameters between the complexes are discussed.

  • Household food security is associated with growth of infants and young children in rural Bangladesh
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Public Health Nutrition. - 1368-9800 .- 1475-2727. ; 12:9, s. 1556-1562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Despite a strong relationship between household food security and the health and nutritional status of adults and older children, the association of household food security with the growth of infants and young children has not been adequately studied, particularly in developing countries. We examined the association between household food security and subsequent growth of infants and young children in rural Bangladesh. DESIGN: We followed 1343 children from birth to 24 months of age who were born in the Maternal and Infant Nutrition Intervention in Matlab (MINIMat) study in rural Bangladesh. A food security scale was created from data collected on household food security from the mothers during pregnancy. Data on weight and length were collected monthly in the first year and quarterly in the second year of life. Anthropometric indices were calculated relative to the 2006 WHO child growth standards. Growth trajectories were modelled using multilevel models for change controlling for possible confounders. RESULTS: Household food security was associated (P < 0.05) with greater subsequent weight and length gain in this cohort. Attained weight, length and anthropometric indices from birth to 24 months were higher (P < 0.001) among those who were in food-secure households. Proportions of underweight and stunting were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in food-secure households. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that household food security is a determinant of child growth in rural Bangladesh, and that it may be necessary to ensure food security of these poor rural households to prevent highly prevalent undernutrition in this population and in similar settings elsewhere in the world.

  • Ingår i: Food and Nutrition Bulletin. - 0379-5721 .- 1564-8265. ; 30:2, s. 137-144

    • Background. Although the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference has been widely used, in 2006 the World Health Organization (WHO) released new standards for assessing growth of infants and children worldwide. Objective. To assess and compare the growth of breastfed rural Bangladeshi infants and young children based on the new WHO child growth standards and the NCHS reference. Methods. We followed 1,343 children in the Maternal and Infant Nutrition Intervention in Matlab (MINIMat) study from birth to 24 months of age. Weights and lengths of the children were measured monthly during infancy and quarterly in the second year of life. Anthropometric indices were calculated using both WHO standards and the NCHS reference. The growth pattern and estimates of undernutrition based on the WHO standards and the NCHS reference were compared. Results. The mean birthweight was 2,697 +/- 401 g, with 30% weighing < 2,500 g. The growth pattern of the MINIMat children more closely tracked the WHO standards than it did the NCHS reference. The rates of stunting based on the WHO standards were higher than the rates based on the NCHS reference throughout the first 24 months. The rates of underweight and wasting based on the WHO standards were significantly different from those based on the NCHS reference. Conclusions. This comparison confirms that use of the NCHS reference misidentifies undernutrition and the timing of growth faltering in infants and young children, which was a key rationale for constructing the new WHO standards. The new WHO child growth standards provide a benchmark for assessing the growth of breastfed infants and children.

  • Performance evaluation of a right atrial automatic capture verification algorithm using two different sensing configurations.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Pacing and clinical electrophysiology : PACE. - : Wiley. - 1540-8159 .- 0147-8389. ; 32:5, s. 579-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: This acute data collection study evaluated the performance of a right atrial (RA) automatic capture verification (ACV) algorithm based on evoked response sensing from two electrode configurations during independent unipolar pacing. METHODS: RA automatic threshold tests were conducted. Evoked response signals were simultaneously recorded between the RA(Ring) electrode and an empty pacemaker housing electrode (RA(Ring)-->Can) and the electrically isolated Indifferent header electrode (RA(Ring)-->Ind). The atrial evoked response (AER) and the performance of the ACV algorithm were evaluated off-line using each sensing configuration. An accurate threshold measurement was defined as within 0.2 V of the unipolar threshold measured manually. Threshold tests were designed to fail for small AER (< 0.35 mV) or insufficient signal-to-artifact ratio (SAR < 2). Manual threshold measurements were obtained during RA unipolar and bipolar pacing and compared across device indications. RESULTS: Data were collected from 38 patients with RA bipolar leads from four manufacturers. AER signals were analyzed from 34 patients who were indicated for a pacemaker (five), implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (11), or cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker (six) or defibrillator (12). The minimum AER amplitude was larger (P < 0.0001) when recorded from RA(Ring)-->Can (1.6+/-0.9 mV) than from RA(Ring)-->Ind (1.3+/-0.8 mV). The algorithm successfully measured the pacing threshold in 96.8% and 91.0% of tests for RA(Ring)-->Can and RA(Ring)-->Ind, respectively. No statistical difference between the unipolar and bipolar pacing threshold was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The RA(Ring)-->Can AER sensing configuration may provide a means of implementing an independent pacing/sensing method for ACV in the RA. RA bipolar pacing therapy based on measured RA unipolar pacing thresholds may be feasible.

    • Plastics debris in the marine environment, including resin pellets, fragments and microscopic plastic fragments, contain organic contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls ( PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbons, organochlorine pesticides (2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane, hexachlorinated hexanes), polybrominated diphenylethers, alkylphenols and bisphenol A, at concentrations from sub ng g(-1) to mg g(-1). Some of these compounds are added during plastics manufacture, while others adsorb from the surrounding seawater. Concentrations of hydrophobic contaminants adsorbed on plastics showed distinct spatial variations reflecting global pollution patterns. Model calculations and experimental observations consistently show that polyethylene accumulates more organic contaminants than other plastics such as polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. Both a mathematical model using equilibrium partitioning and experimental data have demonstrated the transfer of contaminants from plastic to organisms. A feeding experiment indicated that PCBs could transfer from contaminated plastics to streaked shearwater chicks. Plasticizers, other plastics additives and constitutional monomers also present potential threats in terrestrial environments because they can leach from waste disposal sites into groundwater and/or surface waters. Leaching and degradation of plasticizers and polymers are complex phenomena dependent on environmental conditions in the landfill and the chemical properties of each additive. Bisphenol A concentrations in leachates from municipal waste disposal sites in tropical Asia ranged from sub mu g l(-1) to mg l(-1) and were correlated with the level of economic development.

  • Cross section measurements of charged pion photoproduction in hydrogen and deuterium from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV

    • The differential cross sections for the gamma n ->pi(-)p and the gamma p ->pi(+)n processes were measured at Jefferson Lab. The photon energies ranged from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV, corresponding to center-of-mass energies from 1.7 to 3.4 GeV. The pion center-of-mass angles varied from 50(degrees) to 110(degrees). The pi(-) and pi(+) photoproduction data both exhibit a global scaling behavior at high energies and high transverse momenta, consistent with the constituent counting rule prediction and the existing pi(+) data. The data suggest possible substructure of the scaling behavior, which might be oscillations around the scaling value. The data show an enhancement in the scaled cross section at center-of-mass energy near 2.2 GeV. The differential cross section ratios [d sigma/dt(gamma n ->pi(-)p)/d sigma/dt(gamma p ->pi(+)n)] at high energies and high transverse momenta can be described by calculations based on one-hard-gluon-exchange diagrams.
