  • DRAFTS 5 : DISAPORIC BODIES
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term ‘diaspora’ has evolved in the fields of both art and design, and is often cited in discussions of identity. Existing artistic explorations are reflections on diverse experiences of culture and identification, and express alternative narratives. They challenge the conventional structures of established thoughts and stimulate the need to further augment our understanding. The multiplatform event ‘Diasporic Bodies’ brings together a group of artists from the Department of Visual Arts at Western University, London, Canada, and design researchers from the Body and Space Research Lab at the Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås, Sweden. The artistic outputs focus on similarities between cultures, explorations of artefacts with connotations of cultural translation involving active processes of identification in terms of how materials and expressions are used to create relational aesthetics, and alternative approaches to modernity. The works, which have been produced by artists and researchers from both Western University and the University of Borås, were exhibited at the Cohen Commons at the Department of Visual Arts at Western University in January 2024, and are accompanied by a catalogue documenting the research and artistic outputs. A series of workshops and talks will be held at Western University in conjunction with the exhibition.

  • A practicable and reliable test for metal powder spreadability : development of test and analysis technique
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Progress in Additive Manufacturing. - : Springer Nature. - 2363-9512 .- 2363-9520. ; 8:3, s. 505-517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A crucial step in the powder bed metal additive manufacturing process is the formation of a thin layer of powder on top of the existing material. The propensity of the powder to form thin layers under the conditions used in additive manufacturing is critically important, but no test method has yet been established to measure this characteristic, which is sometimes referred to as spreadability. The current work spreads a single layer of powder using commercial equipment from the paint and food industries and derives the density of a layer of powder, which is of a similar thickness to that in additive manufacturing. Twenty-four powders from eight suppliers have been tested and the density of the layers has been measured as a function of various parameters. Twenty-two of the powders successfully form thin layers, with a density of at least 40% of each powder’s apparent density. Hall flow time did not correlate with the spread layer density, although the two powders that did not spread did not pass through the Hall funnel. The roughness of the plate onto which the powder was spread, the recoater speed, the layer thickness, particle size and aspect ratio all affect the measured layer density. Results of the new test are repeatable and reproducible. These findings can be used to develop a test for spreadability for metal powders that can be used for additive manufacturing, which will help to improve the quality of printed components.

  • Constraining the state of the intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization using MWA 21-cm signal observations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 503:3, s. 4551-4562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) team has derived new upper limits on the spherically averaged power spectrum of the 21-cm signal at six redshifts in the range z approximate to 6.5-8.7. We use these upper limits and a Bayesian inference framework to derive constraints on the ionization and thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) as well as on the strength of a possible additional radio background. We do not find any constraints on the state of the IGM for z greater than or similar to 7.8 if no additional radio background is present. In the presence of such a radio background, the 95 per cent credible intervals of the disfavoured models at redshift greater than or similar to 6.5 correspond to an IGM with a volume-averaged fraction of ionized regions below 0.6 and an average gas temperature less than or similar to 10(3) h(-1). In these models, the heated regions are characterized by a temperature larger than that of the radio background, and by a distribution with characteristic size less than or similar to 10 h(-1) Mpc and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of less than or similar to 30 h(-1) Mpc. Within the same credible interval limits, we exclude an additional radio background of at least 0.008 per cent of the CMB at 1.42 GHz.

  • Interpreting LOFAR 21-cm signal upper limits at z ≈ 9.1 in the context of high-z galaxy and reionization observations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 501:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the latest upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum at z approximate to 9.1 from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), we explore the regions of parameter space which are inconsistent with the data. We use 21CMMC, a Monte Carlo Markov chain sampler of 21CMFAST which directly forward models the three dimensional (3D) cosmic 21-cm signal in a fully Bayesian framework. We use the astrophysical parametrization from 21CMFAST, which includes mass-dependent star formation rates and ionizing escape fractions as well as soft-band X-ray luminosities to place limits on the properties of the high-z galaxies. Further, we connect the disfavoured regions of parameter space with existing observational constraints on the Epoch of Reionization such as ultra-violet (UV) luminosity functions, background UV photoionization rate, intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction, and the electron scattering optical depth. We find that all models exceeding the 21-cm signal limits set by LOFAR at z approximate to 9.1 are excluded at greater than or similar to 2 sigma by other probes. Finally, we place limits on the IGM spin temperature from LOFAR, disfavouring at 95 per cent confidence spin temperatures below similar to 2.6 K across an IGM neutral fraction range of 0.15 less than or similar to (x) over bar (HI) less than or similar to 0.6. Note, these limits are only obtained from 141 h of data in a single redshift bin. With tighter upper limits, across multiple redshift bins expected in the near future from LOFAR, more viable models will be ruled out. Our approach demonstrates the potential of forward modelling tools such as 21CMMC in combining 21-cm observations with other high-z probes to constrain the astrophysics of galaxies.

  • A comprehensive review of the methane decomposition using a gliding arc discharge reactor for hydrogen generation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Energy Institute. - : Elsevier. - 1743-9671 .- 1746-0220. ; 109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of fossil fuels has caused an ongoing increase in greenhouse gases (GHGs), which have a negative impact on both the environment and human health. The world requires an alternative green sustainable fuel that can solve these problems. Hydrogen (H2) can be considered as an alternative green energy source as it has zero carbon emissions. Methane (CH4) decomposition is a potential technique to produce H2 fuel. Gliding arc discharge (GAD) reactors have gained significant attention to produce H2 from the decomposition of CH4. This review focuses on the application of GAD reactors for CH4 conversion. The effects of different parameters, such as operation conditions, additives, geometric configuration, and catalysts, on the performance of the GAD reactor, are discussed in this review. © 2023 Energy Institute

  • A 1.5-5-GHz Integrated RF Transmitter Front End for Active Matching of an Antenna Cluster
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on microwave theory and techniques. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 68:11, s. 4728-4739
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recently proposed method for realizing frequency-reconfigurable antennas across a wideband is based on adjusting the feed amplitudes and phases of a multiport antenna. In this article, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method, for the first time, with a conjunction of an integrated RF transmitter and a four-element antenna cluster. The implementation performs on-chip amplitude and phase tuning with supply scaling and delay tuning circuits to tune the antenna cluster without requirement of matching network. The antenna cluster is built with four closely spaced antenna elements implemented on a printed circuit board. The transmitter integrated circuit (IC) is implemented in a 28-nm CMOS process with the chip size of 0.85 mm x 0.95 mm, including pads. The proof-of-concept implementation demonstrates tunability across a wideband from 1.5 to 5 GHz. CCBY
