  • Regional Lung Perfusion estimated by Electrical Impedance Tomography in a piglet model of lung collapse
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 8750-7587 .- 1522-1601. ; 112:1, s. 225-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The assessment of the regional match between alveolar ventilation and perfusion in critically ill patients requires simultaneous measurements of both parameters. Ideally, assessment of lung perfusion should be performed in real-time with an imaging technology which provides, through fast acquisition of sequential images, information about the regional dynamics or regional kinetics of an appropriate tracer. We present a novel electrical impedance tomography (EIT) based method that quantitatively estimates regional lung perfusion based on first-pass kinetics of a bolus of hypertonic saline contrast. Pulmonary blood flow was measured in six piglets during control and unilateral or bilateral lung collapse conditions. The first-pass kinetics method showed good agreement with the estimates obtained by single-photon-emission computerized tomography (SPECT). The mean difference (SPECT minus EIT) between fractional blood flow to lung areas suffering atelectasis was -0.6 %, with a standard deviation of 2.9 %. This method outperformed the estimates of lung perfusion based on impedance-pulsatility. In conclusion, we describe a novel method based on Electrical Impedance Tomography for estimating regional lung perfusion at the bedside. In both, healthy and injured lung conditions, the distribution of pulmonary blood flow as assessed by EIT agreed well with the one obtained by SPECT. The method proposed in this paper has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of regional perfusion under different lung and therapeutic conditions.

  • Synthesis of functionalized furopyrazines as restricted dipeptidomimetics
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Tetrahedron. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-4020 .- 1464-5416. ; 68:14, s. 3019-3029
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, an efficient synthetic approach to a furopyrazine scaffold with four points of diversity, starting from 2(1H)-pyrazinones, with dipeptomimetic properties, is presented. R-groups corresponding to amino acid side chains were introduced during the 2(1H)-pyrazinone and subsequent furopyrazine formation. The furopyrazine scaffold was further functionalized with an amino- and a carboxy-terminus resulting in a conformationally restricted dipeptidomimetic scaffold. The carboxy-terminus was introduced via a chemoselective vinylation of the 7-position followed by oxidative cleavage, while the amino-terminus was obtained via Buchwald-Hartwig amidation of the 2-position of the scaffold. The versatility of the synthetic method was demonstrated by the synthesis of a small library of diversely substituted furopyrazines having various amino acid side chains on the four points of diversity. Evaluation with an X-ray structure of the scaffold and computational analysis supports the exploitation of the furopyrazine scaffold as a restricted dipeptide mimic, which can mimic the two central residues of a beta-turn.

  • Controlled exposures to air pollutants and risk of cardiac arrhythmia
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives. - : Environmental Health Perspectives. - 0091-6765 .- 1552-9924. ; 122:7, s. 747-753
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have reported associations between air pollution exposure and increases in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Exposure to air pollutants can influence cardiac autonomic tone and reduce heart rate variability, and may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly in susceptible patient groups. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias during and after controlled exposure to air pollutants in healthy volunteers and patients with coronary heart disease. METHODS: We analyzed data from 13 double-blind randomized crossover studies including 282 participants (140 healthy volunteers and 142 patients with stable coronary heart disease) from whom continuous electrocardiograms were available. The incidence of cardiac arrhythmias was recorded for each exposure and study population. RESULTS: There were no increases in any cardiac arrhythmia during or after exposure to dilute diesel exhaust, wood smoke, ozone, concentrated ambient particles, engineered carbon nanoparticles, or high ambient levels of air pollution in either healthy volunteers or patients with coronary heart disease. CONCLUSIONS: Acute controlled exposure to air pollutants did not increase the short-term risk of arrhythmia in participants. Research employing these techniques remains crucial in identifying the important pathophysiological pathways involved in the adverse effects of air pollution, and is vital to inform environmental and public health policy decisions.

  • Tree and shrub expansion over the past 34 years at the tree-line near Abisko, Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40:6, s. 683-692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shrubs and trees are expected to expand in the sub-Arctic due to global warming. Our study was conducted in Abisko, sub-arctic Sweden. We recorded the change in coverage of shrub and tree species over a 32- to 34-year period, in three 50 x 50 m plots; in the alpine-tree-line ecotone. The cover of shrubs and trees (<3.5 cm diameter at breast height) were estimated during 2009-2010 and compared with historical documentation from 1976 to 1977. Similarly, all tree stems (>= 3.5 cm) were noted and positions determined. There has been a substantial increase of cover of shrubs and trees, particularly dwarf birch (Betula nana), and mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii), and an establishment of aspen (Populus tremula). The other species willows (Salix spp.), juniper (Juniperus communis), and rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) revealed inconsistent changes among the plots. Although this study was unable to identify the causes for the change in shrubs and small trees, they are consistent with anticipated changes due to climate change and reduced herbivory.

  • Modelling and optimizing precipitation in creep resistant austenitic steel 25Cr-20Ni-Nb-N
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Advances in Materials Technology for Fossil Power Plants - Proceedings from the 7th International Conference. ; , s. 1163-1172
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 25Cr-20Ni-Nb-N (Tp310HCbN) steel is a promising austenitic steel for applications in superheater tubes in coal fired thermal power plants due to the high creep strength and oxidation resistance. In this work, the microstructural evolution of this material during heat treatment and thermal ageing has been investigated. The investigations were carried out by Light Optical Microscopy (LOM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Besides, equilibrium and Scheil calculations were carried out using the thermodynamic software MatCalc to analyse the stable phases and the solidification process, respectively. Precipitation calculations during solution annealing and subsequent ageing at 650 and 750°C were performed to predict the phase fraction and precipitates radius up to 10.000h ageing time. SEM and TEM investigations of aged specimens revealed the presence of six different precipitates: M23C 6, Cr2N, sigma, Z-phase, eta-phase (Cr3Ni 2Si(C,N)) and Nb(C,N). These precipitates were predicted and confirmed by MatCalc simulations. The calculated phase fraction and mean radius show good agreement with experimental data. Finally, simulations of different Cr-, C- and N-content in Tp310HCbN were performed.
