  • TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 26:1, s. 119-188

    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 259:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

  • Observing many researchers using the same data and hypothesis reveals a hidden universe of uncertainty
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 119:44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores how researchers analytical choices affect the reliability of scientific findings. Most discussions of reliability problems in science focus on systematic biases. We broaden the lens to emphasize the idiosyncrasy of conscious and unconscious decisions that researchers make during data analysis. We coordinated 161 researchers in 73 research teams and observed their research decisions as they used the same data to independently test the same prominent social science hypothesis: that greater immigration reduces support for social policies among the public. In this typical case of social science research, research teams reported both widely diverging numerical findings and substantive conclusions despite identical start conditions. Researchers expertise, prior beliefs, and expectations barely predict the wide variation in research outcomes. More than 95% of the total variance in numerical results remains unexplained even after qualitative coding of all identifiable decisions in each teams workflow. This reveals a universe of uncertainty that remains hidden when considering a single study in isolation. The idiosyncratic nature of how researchers results and conclusions varied is a previously underappreciated explanation for why many scientific hypotheses remain contested. These results call for greater epistemic humility and clarity in reporting scientific findings.

  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Progress from ASDEX Upgrade experiments in preparing the physics basis of ITER operation and DEMO scenario development
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameters only. In the plasma center, theoretical predictions on plasma current redistribution by a dynamo effect were confirmed experimentally. For core transport, the stabilizing effect of fast ion distributions on turbulent transport is shown to be important to explain the core isotope effect and improves the description of hollow low-Z impurity profiles. The L-H power threshold of hydrogen plasmas is not affected by small helium admixtures and it increases continuously from the deuterium to the hydrogen level when the hydrogen concentration is raised from 0 to 100%. One focus of recent campaigns was the search for a fusion relevant integrated plasma scenario without large edge localised modes (ELMs). Results from six different ELM-free confinement regimes are compared with respect to reactor relevance: ELM suppression by magnetic perturbation coils could be attributed to toroidally asymmetric turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the separatrix. Stable improved confinement mode plasma phases with a detached inner divertor were obtained using a feedback control of the plasma β. The enhanced D α H-mode regime was extended to higher heating power by feedback controlled radiative cooling with argon. The quasi-coherent exhaust regime was developed into an integrated scenario at high heating power and energy confinement, with a detached divertor and without large ELMs. Small ELMs close to the separatrix lead to peeling-ballooning stability and quasi continuous power exhaust. Helium beam density fluctuation measurements confirm that transport close to the separatrix is important to achieve the different ELM-free regimes. Based on separatrix plasma parameters and interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence, an analytic model was derived that reproduces the experimentally found important operational boundaries of the density limit and between L- and H-mode confinement. Feedback control for the X-point radiator (XPR) position was established as an important element for divertor detachment control. Stable and detached ELM-free phases with H-mode confinement quality were obtained when the XPR was moved 10 cm above the X-point. Investigations of the plasma in the future flexible snow-flake divertor of AUG by means of first SOLPS-ITER simulations with drifts activated predict beneficial detachment properties and the activation of an additional strike point by the drifts.

  • Competition and moral behavior: A meta-analysis of forty-five crowd-sourced experimental designs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences - PNAS. - : National Academy of Sciences. - 1091-6490 .- 0027-8424. ; 120:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Does competition affect moral behavior? This fundamental question has been debated among leading scholars for centuries, and more recently, it has been tested in experimental studies yielding a body of rather inconclusive empirical evidence. A potential source of ambivalent empirical results on the same hypothesis is design heterogeneity-variation in true effect sizes across various reasonable experimental research protocols. To provide further evidence on whether competition affects moral behavior and to examine whether the generalizability of a single experimental study is jeopardized by design heterogeneity, we invited independent research teams to contribute experimental designs to a crowd-sourced project. In a large-scale online data collection, 18,123 experimental participants were randomly allocated to 45 randomly selected experimental designs out of 95 submitted designs. We find a small adverse effect of competition on moral behavior in a meta-analysis of the pooled data. The crowd-sourced design of our study allows for a clean identification and estimation of the variation in effect sizes above and beyond what could be expected due to sampling variance. We find substantial design heterogeneity-estimated to be about 1.6 times as large as the average standard error of effect size estimates of the 45 research designs-indicating that the informativeness and generalizability of results based on a single experimental design are limited. Drawing strong conclusions about the underlying hypotheses in the presence of substantive design heterogeneity requires moving toward much larger data collections on various experimental designs testing the same hypothesis.

  • Ingår i: Lancet psychiatry. - London, United Kingdom : Elsevier. - 2215-0374 .- 2215-0366. ; 8:6, s. 500-511
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Findings We identified 76 RCTs, including 48 trials contributing individual participant data (11 704 participants) and 28 trials with aggregate data (6474 participants). The participants' weighted mean age was 42.0 years and 12 406 (71%) of 17 521 reported were women. There was suggestive evidence that behavioural activation might be beneficial (iMD -1.83 [95% credible interval (CrI) -2.90 to -0.80]) and that relaxation might be harmful (1.20 [95% CrI 0.17 to 2.27]). Baseline severity emerged as the strongest prognostic factor for endpoint depression. Combining human and automated encouragement reduced dropouts from treatment (incremental odds ratio, 0.32 [95% CrI 0.13 to 0.93]). The risk of bias was low for the randomisation process, missing outcome data, or selection of reported results in most of the included studies, uncertain for deviation from intended interventions, and high for measurement of outcomes. There was moderate to high heterogeneity among the studies and their components. 511

  • Meta-analysis of multidecadal biodiversity trends in Europe
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local biodiversity trends over time are likely to be decoupled from global trends, as local processes may compensate or counteract global change. We analyze 161 long-term biological time series (15-91 years) collected across Europe, using a comprehensive dataset comprising ~6,200 marine, freshwater and terrestrial taxa. We test whether (i) local long-term biodiversity trends are consistent among biogeoregions, realms and taxonomic groups, and (ii) changes in biodiversity correlate with regional climate and local conditions. Our results reveal that local trends of abundance, richness and diversity differ among biogeoregions, realms and taxonomic groups, demonstrating that biodiversity changes at local scale are often complex and cannot be easily generalized. However, we find increases in richness and abundance with increasing temperature and naturalness as well as a clear spatial pattern in changes in community composition (i.e. temporal taxonomic turnover) in most biogeoregions of Northern and Eastern Europe. The global biodiversity decline might conceal complex local and group-specific trends. Here the authors report a quantitative synthesis of longterm biodiversity trends across Europe, showing how, despite overall increase in biodiversity metric and stability in abundance, trends differ between regions, ecosystem types, and taxa.

  • Multi-omic and functional analysis for classification and treatment of sarcomas with FUS-TFCP2 or EWSR1-TFCP2 fusions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723. ; 15, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Linking clinical multi-omics with mechanistic studies may improve the understanding of rare cancers. We leverage two precision oncology programs to investigate rhabdomyosarcoma with FUS/EWSR1-TFCP2 fusions, an orphan malignancy without effective therapies. All tumors exhibit outlier ALK expression, partly accompanied by intragenic deletions and aberrant splicing resulting in ALK variants that are oncogenic and sensitive to ALK inhibitors. Additionally, recurrent CKDN2A/MTAP co-deletions provide a rationale for PRMT5-targeted therapies. Functional studies show that FUS-TFCP2 blocks myogenic differentiation, induces transcription of ALK and truncated TERT, and inhibits DNA repair. Unlike other fusion-driven sarcomas, TFCP2-rearranged tumors exhibit genomic instability and signs of defective homologous recombination. DNA methylation profiling demonstrates a close relationship with undifferentiated sarcomas. In two patients, sarcoma was preceded by benign lesions carrying FUS-TFCP2, indicating stepwise sarcomagenesis. This study illustrates the potential of linking precision oncology with preclinical research to gain insight into the classification, pathogenesis, and therapeutic vulnerabilities of rare cancers.

  • Low temperature oxidation behavior of Mo2BC coatings
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology. A. Vacuum, Surfaces, and Films. - : A V S AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0734-2101 .- 1520-8559. ; 38:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mo2BC exhibits a unique combination of high stiffness and moderate ductility, enabling the application as a protective and wear resistant coating. As the low temperature oxidation behavior of Mo2BC coatings is unexplored, direct current magnetron sputtered Mo2BC coatings were oxidized at temperatures ranging from 500 to 100 degrees C for up to 28 days. Time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis reveals that the onset of oxidation takes place at approximately 300 degrees C as a significant increase in the O content was observed. Crystalline oxide scales containing orthorhombic MoO3 were identified after oxidation for 15 min at 500 degrees C and 10 days at 200 degrees C. Isothermal oxidation at 200 and 100 degrees C exhibits oxide scale thicknesses of 401 +/- 33 and 22 +/- 10 nm after 14 days. Oxidation for 28 days at 100 degrees C exhibits an oxide scale thickness of 13 +/- 3 nm, which is comparable to the aforementioned oxide scale thickness after oxidation for 14 days at 100 degrees C. Based on the combination of mechanical properties and the here reported low temperature oxidation behavior, Mo2BC coatings qualify for applications in solid wood machining and low temperature forming processes at temperatures close to 100 degrees C or below.

  • Ion kinetic energy- and ion flux-dependent mechanical properties and thermal stability of (Ti,Al)N thin films
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion-irradiation-induced changes in structure, elastic properties, and thermal stability of metastable c-(Ti,Al)N thin films synthesized by high-power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HPPMS) and cathodic arc deposition (CAD) are systematically investigated by experiments and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. While films deposited by HPPMS show a random orientation at ion kinetic energies (Ek)>105 eV, an evolution towards (111) orientation is observed in CAD films for Ek>144 eV. The measured ion energy flux at the growing film surface is 3.3 times larger for CAD compared to HPPMS. Hence, it is inferred that formation of the strong (111) texture in CAD films is caused by the ion flux-and ion energy-induced strain energy minimization in defective c-(Ti,Al)N. The ion energy-dependent elastic modulus can be rationalized by considering the ion energy-and orientation -dependent formation of point defects from DFT predictions: The balancing effects of bombardment-induced Frenkel defects formation and the concurrent evolution of compressive intrinsic stress result in the apparent independence of the elastic modulus from Ek for HPPMS films without preferential orientation. However, an ion energy-dependent elastic modulus reduction of similar to 18% for the CAD films can be understood by considering the 34% higher Frenkel pair concentration formed at Ek=182 eV upon irradiation of the experimentally observed (111)-oriented (Ti,Al)N in comparison to the (200)-configuration at similar Ek. Moreover, the effect of Frenkel pair concentration on the thermal stability of metastable c-(Ti,Al)N is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry: Ion-irradiation-induced increase in Frenkel pairs concentration retards the wurtzite formation temperature by up to 206 degrees C.

  • Valence electron concentration- and N vacancy-induced elasticity in cubic early transition metal nitrides
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by frequently reported deviations from stoichiometry in cubic transition metal nitride (TMNx) thin films, the effect of N-vacancy concentration on the elastic properties of cubic TiNx, ZrNx, VNx, NbNx, and MoNx (0.72 & LE; x & LE; 1.00) is systematically studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The predictions are validated experimentally for VNx (0.77 & LE; x & LE; 0.97). The DFT results indicate that the elastic behavior of the TMNx depends on both the N-vacancy concentration and the valence electron concentration (VEC) of the transition metal: While TiNx and ZrNx exhibit vacancy-induced reductions in elastic modulus, VNx and NbNx show an increase. These trends can be rationalized by considering vacancy-induced changes in elastic anisotropy and bonding. While introduction of N-vacancies in TiNx results in a significant reduction of elastic modulus along all directions and a lower average bond strength of Ti-N, the vacancy-induced reduction in [001] direction of VNx is overcompensated by the higher stiffness along [011] and [111] directions, resulting in a higher average bond strength of V-N. To validate the predicted vacancy-induced changes in elasticity experimentally, close-to-singlecrystal VNx (0.77 & LE; x & LE; 0.97) are grown on MgO(001) substrates. As the N-content is reduced, the relaxed lattice parameter a0, as probed by X-ray diffraction, decreases from 4.128 & ANGS; to 4.096 & ANGS;. This reduction in lattice parameter is accompanied by an anomalous 11% increase in elastic modulus, as determined by nanoindentation. As the experimental data agree with the predictions, the elasticity enhancement in VNx upon N-vacancy formation can be understood based on the concomitant changes in elastic anisotropy and bonding.

  • Noise-dependent bias in quantitative STEM-EMCD experiments revealed by bootstrapping
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ultramicroscopy. - : Elsevier. - 0304-3991 .- 1879-2723. ; 257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) is a powerful technique for estimating element-specific magnetic moments of materials on nanoscale with the potential to reach atomic resolution in transmission electron microscopes. However, the fundamentally weak EMCD signal strength complicates quantification of magnetic moments, as this requires very high precision, especially in the denominator of the sum rules. Here, we employ a statistical resampling technique known as bootstrapping to an experimental EMCD dataset to produce an empirical estimate of the noise-dependent error distribution resulting from application of EMCD sum rules to bcc iron in a 3-beam orientation. We observe clear experimental evidence that noisy EMCD signals preferentially bias the estimation of magnetic moments, further supporting this with error distributions produced by Monte-Carlo simulations. Finally, we propose guidelines for the recognition and minimization of this bias in the estimation of magnetic moments.

  • Effect of Growth Temperature and Atmosphere Exposure Time on Impurity Incorporation in Sputtered Mg, Al, and Ca Thin Films
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI. - 1996-1944. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Impurities can be incorporated during thin film deposition, but also can originate from atmosphere exposure. As impurities can strongly affect the composition-structure-property relations in magnetron sputter deposited thin films, it is important to distinguish between both incorporation channels. Therefore, the impurity incorporation by atmosphere exposure into sputtered Mg, Al, and Ca thin films is systematically studied by a variation of the deposition temperatures and atmosphere exposure times. Deposition temperature variation results in morphological modifications explained by considering surface and bulk diffusion as well as grain boundary motion and evaporation. The film morphologies exhibiting the lowest oxygen concentrations, as measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, are obtained at a homologous temperature of 0.4 for both Mg and Al thin films. For Ca, preventing atmosphere exposure is essential to hinder impurity incorporation: By comparing the impurity concentration in Al-capped and uncapped thin films, it is demonstrated that Ca thin films are locally protected by Al-capping, while Mg (and Al) form native passivation layers. Furthermore, it can be learned that the capping (or self-passivation) efficiency in terms of hindering further oxidation of the films in atmosphere is strongly dependent on the underlying morphology, which in turn is defined by the growth temperature.

  • Oxidation behaviour of V2AlC MAX phase coatings
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 40:13, s. 4436-4444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the oxidation behaviour of V2AlC coatings up to 800 degrees C, in air. The coatings were deposited at 580 degrees C using magnetron sputtering from a powder metallurgical composite V2AlC target and were subsequently oxidised for 5, 15 and 30 min. The microstructural evolution of the samples was investigated, and X-ray diffraction patterns were collected to track the formation of oxides. The first indications of oxidation appear after just 15 min at 500 degrees C, as V-based oxides grew on the surface of the coatings. Later, the presence of mostly V-based oxides and ternary (V, Al)-oxides was observed starting after 5 min at 600 degrees C. Further analyses confirmed outward diffusion of V and inward diffusion of O, while Al tends to sublimate. alpha-A12O3 was only indexed after 5 min at 800 degrees C. Ex-situ electrical resistivity measurements allowed tracking the oxidation progress of the V2AlC coating.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein we report on the synthesis of a metastable (Cr,Y)(2)AlC MAX phase solid solution by co-sputtering from a composite Cr-Al-C and elemental Y target, at room temperature, followed by annealing. However, direct high-temperature synthesis resulted in multiphase films, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analyses, room-temperature depositions, followed by annealing to 760 degrees C led to the formation of phase pure (Cr,Y)(2)AlC by diffusion. Higher annealing temperatures caused a decomposition of the metastable phase into Cr2AlC, Y5Al3, and Cr-carbides. In contrast to pure Cr2AlC, the Y-containing phase crystallizes directly in the MAX phase structure instead of first forming a disordered solid solution. Furthermore, the crystallization temperature was shown to be Y-content dependent and was increased by similar to 200 degrees C for 5 at.% Y compared to Cr2AlC. Calculations predicting the metastable phase formation of (Cr,Y)(2)AlC and its decomposition are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0970. ; 6:14, s. 13677-13688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In times of climate change and resource scarcity, researchers are aiming to find sustainable alternatives to synthetic polymers for the fabrication of biodegradable, eco-friendly, and, at the same time, high-performance materials. Nanocomposites have the ability to combine several favorable properties of different materials in a single device. Here, we evaluate the suitability of two kinds of inks containing silver nanowires for the fast, facile, and industrial-relevant fabrication of two different types of cellulose-based silver nanowire electrodes via layer-by-layer spray deposition only. The Type I electrode has a layered structure, which is composed of a network of silver nanowires sprayed on top of a cellulose nanofibrils layer, while the Type II electrode consists of a homogeneous mixture of silver nanowires and cellulose nanofibrils. A correlation between the surface structure, conductivity, and transparency of both types of electrodes is established. We use the Haacke figure of merit for transparent electrode materials to demonstrate the favorable influence of cellulose nanofibrils in the spray ink by identifying Type II as the electrode with the lowest sheet resistance (minimum 5 ± 0.04 Ω/sq), while at the same time having a lower surface roughness and shorter fabrication time than Type I. Finally, we prove the mechanical stability of the Type II electrode by bending tests and its long-time stability under ambient conditions. The results demonstrate that the mixed spray ink of silver nanowires and cellulose nanofibrils is perfectly suitable for the fast fabrication of highly conductive organic nanoelectronics on an industrial scale.

    • In the last decade, there has been a growing interest in applying AI technologies to implement complex data analytics over data streams. To this end, researchers in various fields have been organising a yearly event called the "Stream Reasoning Workshop" to share perspectives, challenges, and experiences around this topic. In this paper, the previous organisers of the workshops and other community members provide a summary of the main research results that have been discussed during the first six editions of the event. These results can be categorised into four main research areas: The first is concerned with the technological challenges related to handling large data streams. The second area aims at adapting and extending existing semantic technologies to data streams. The third and fourth areas focus on how to implement reasoning techniques, either considering deductive or inductive techniques, to extract new and valuable knowledge from the data in the stream. This summary is written not only to provide a crystallisation of the field, but also to point out distinctive traits of the stream reasoning community. Moreover, it also provides a foundation for future research by enumerating a list of use cases and open challenges, to stimulate others to join this exciting research area.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by protein inclusions mostly composed of aggregated forms of α-synuclein (α-Syn) and by the progressive degeneration of midbrain dopaminergic neurons (mDANs), resulting in motor symptoms. While other brain regions also undergo pathologic changes in PD, the relevance of α-Syn aggregation for the preferential loss of mDANs in PD pathology is not completely understood yet. To elucidate the mechanisms of the brain region-specific neuronal vulnerability in PD, we modeled human PD using human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from familial PD cases with a duplication (Dupl) of the α-Syn gene (SNCA) locus. Human iPSCs from PD Dupl patients and a control individual were differentiated into mDANs and cortical projection neurons (CPNs). SNCA dosage increase did not influence the differentiation efficiency of mDANs and CPNs. However, elevated α-Syn pathology, as revealed by enhanced α-Syn insolubility and phosphorylation, was determined in PD-derived mDANs compared with PD CPNs. PD-derived mDANs exhibited higher levels of reactive oxygen species and protein nitration levels compared with CPNs, which might underlie elevated α-Syn pathology observed in mDANs. Finally, increased neuronal death was observed in PD-derived mDANs compared to PD CPNs and to control mDANs and CPNs. Our results reveal, for the first time, a higher α-Syn pathology, oxidative stress level, and neuronal death rate in human PD mDANs compared with PD CPNs from the same patient. The finding implies the contribution of pathogenic α-Syn, probably induced by oxidative stress, to selective vulnerability of substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons in human PD.

  • Efficacy and acceptability of cognitive-behavioral therapy and serotonin reuptake inhibitors for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: a network meta-analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. - 0021-9630.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundCognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are recommended treatments for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but their relative efficacy and acceptability have not been comprehensively examined. Further, it remains unclear whether the efficacy of in-person CBT is conserved when delivered in other formats, such as over telephone/webcam or as Internet-delivered CBT (ICBT).MethodsPubMed, PsycINFO, trial registries, and previous systematic reviews were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing CBT (in-person, webcam/telephone-delivered, or ICBT) or SRIs with control conditions or each other. Network meta-analyses were conducted to examine efficacy (post-treatment Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) and acceptability (treatment discontinuation). Confidence in effect estimates was evaluated with CINeMA (Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis).ResultsThirty eligible RCTs and 35 contrasts comprising 2,057 youth with OCD were identified. In-person CBT was significantly more efficacious than ICBT, waitlist, relaxation training, and pill placebo (MD range: 3.95–11.10; CINeMA estimate of confidence: moderate) but did not differ significantly from CBT delivered via webcam/telephone (MD: 0.85 [−2.51, 4.21]; moderate), SRIs (MD: 3.07 [−0.07, 6.20]; low), or the combination of in-person CBT and SRIs (MD: −1.20 [−5.29, 2.91]; low). SRIs were significantly more efficacious than pill placebo (MD: 4.59 [2.70, 6.48]; low) and waitlist (MD: 8.03 [4.24, 11.82]; moderate). No significant differences for acceptability emerged, but confidence in estimates was low.ConclusionsIn-person CBT and SRIs produce clear benefits compared to waitlist and pill placebo and should be integral parts of the clinical management of pediatric OCD, with in-person CBT overall having a stronger evidence base. The combination of in-person CBT and SRIs may be most efficacious, but few studies hinder firm conclusions. The efficacy of CBT appears conserved when delivered via webcam/telephone, while more trials evaluating ICBT are needed.

  • Deviations between film and target compositions induced by backscattered Ar during sputtering from M-2-Al-C (M = Cr, Zr, and Hf) composite targets
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • M-Al-C (M = Cr, Zr, and Hf) thin films are deposited from stoichiometric M2AlC composite targets by direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) and high power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HPPMS) in an industrial coater. Using DCMS it is observed that the composition of the Cr-Al-C film is close to stoichiometric, while the Al concentration in the Zr-Al-C and Hf-Al-C films is significantly reduced compared to the Al concentration in the targets. It is evident that the magnitude of the difference in Al concentration between the target and the cor-responding film composition is strongly dependent on the atomic mass of the transition metal. Zr and Hf atoms are 1.8 and 3.4 times heavier than Cr. In HPPMS, the target potential is approximately 1.6 times larger than that in DCMS, which can result in the film compositions deviating even stronger from the target composition as compared to DCMS. The Zr-Al-C thin film deposited by HPPMS exhibits a larger Al-deficiency than the film deposited by DCMS. The energy distributions of backscattered Ar neutrals are simulated by utilizing a two-body collision model and the Transport of Ions in Matter (TRIM) code. Based on the simulation results the experimentally observed Al -deficient film compositions can be readily explained: As the mass of the transition metal in the target is increased, both, energy and flux of the (at the target) reflected Ar is increased causing preferential re-sputtering of Al in the films. As stoichiometric compositions are a prerequisite for the formation of single-phase compound thin films it is evident that composite targets with a transition metal mass-dependent Al-overstoichiometry are required to compensate the Al-loss induced by the energetic Ar neutrals.

    • Phenotype is the set of observable traits of an organism or condition. While advances in genetics, imaging, and molecular biology have improved our understanding of the underlying biology of Parkinson's disease (PD), clinical pheno-typing of PD still relies primarily on history and physical examination. These subjective, episodic, categorical assessments are valuable for diagnosis and care but have left gaps in our understanding of the PD phenotype. Sensors can provide objective, continuous, real-world data about the PD clinical phenotype, increase our knowledge of its pathology, enhance evaluation of therapies, and ultimately, improve patient care. In this paper, we explore the concept of deep phenotyping-the comprehensive assessment of a condition using multiple clinical, biological, genetic, imaging, and sensor-based tools-for PD. We discuss the rationale for, outline current approaches to, identify benefits and limitations of, and consider future directions for deep clinical phenotyping.

    • The first Layer of atoms on an oxide cataLyst provides the first sites for adsorption of reactants and the Last sites before products or oxygen are desorbed. We employ a unique combination of morphological, structural, and chemical analyses of a model ceria cataLyst with different surface terminations under an H2 environment to unequivocally establish the effect of the Last Layer of atoms on surface reduction. (111) and (100) terminated epitaxiaL isLands of ceria are simultaneously studied in situ allowing for a direct investigation of the structure reducibility relationship under identical conditions. Kinetic rate constants of Ce4+ to Ce3+ transformation and equilibrium concentrations are extracted for both surface terminations. Unlike the kinetic rate constants, which are practically the same for both types of isLands, more pronounced oxygen release, and overall higher reducibility were observed for (100) isLands compared to (111) ones. The findings are in agreement with coordination -Limited oxygen vacancy formation energies calculated by density functional theory. The results point out the important aspect of surface terminations in redox processes, with particular impact on the catalytic reactions of a variety of catalysts.

    • Due to their unique property combination of high strength and toughness, metallic glasses are promising materials for structural applications. As the behaviour of metallic glasses depends on the electronic structure which in turn is defined by chemical composition, we systematically investigate the influence of B concentration on glass transition, topology, magnetism, and bonding for B concentrations x = 2 to 92 at.% in the (Co6.8 +/- 3.9Ta)(100-x)B-x system. From an electronic structure and coordination point of view, the B concentration range is divided into three regions: Below 39 +/- 5 at.% B, the material is a metallic glass due to the dominance of metallic bonds. Above 69 +/- 6 at.%, the presence of an icosahedra-like B network is observed. As the B concentration is increased above 39 +/- 5 at.%, the B network evolves while the metallic coordination of the material decreases until the B concentration of 67 +/- 5 at.% is reached. Hence, a composite is formed. It is evident that, based on the B concentration, the ratio of metallic bonding to icosahedral bonding in the composite can be controlled. It is proposed that, by tuning the coordination in the composite region, glassy materials with defined plasticity and processability can be designed.

    • Formalised knowledge systems, including universities and research institutes, are important for contemporary societies. They are, however, also arguably failing humanity when their impact is measured against the level of progress being made in stimulating the societal changes needed to address challenges like climate change. In this research we used a novel futures-oriented and participatory approach that asked what future envisioned knowledge systems might need to look like and how we might get there. Findings suggest that envisioned future systems will need to be much more collaborative, open, diverse, egalitarian, and able to work with values and systemic issues. They will also need to go beyond producing knowledge about our world to generating wisdom about how to act within it. To get to envisioned systems we will need to rapidly scale methodological innovations, connect innovators, and creatively accelerate learning about working with intractable challenges. We will also need to create new funding schemes, a global knowledge commons, and challenge deeply held assumptions. To genuinely be a creative force in supporting longevity of human and non-human life on our planet, the shift in knowledge systems will probably need to be at the scale of the enlightenment and speed of the scientific and technological revolution accompanying the second World War. This will require bold and strategic action from governments, scientists, civic society and sustained transformational intent.

  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : Elsevier. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 43:13, s. 5484-5492

    • Thermal shock resistance is one of the performance-defining properties for applications where extreme temperature gradients are required. The thermal shock resistance of a material can be described by means of the thermal shock parameter RT. Here, the thermo-mechanical properties required for the calculation of RT are quantum-mechanically predicted, experimentally determined, and compared for Ti3AlC2 and Cr2AlC MAX phases. The coatings are synthesized utilizing direct current magnetron sputtering without additional heating, followed by vacuum annealing. It is shown that the RT of both Ti3AlC2 and Cr2AlC obtained via simulations are in good agreement with the experimentally obtained ones. Comparing the MAX phase coatings, both experiments and simulations indicate superior thermal shock behavior of Ti3AlC2 compared to Cr2AlC, attributed primarily to the larger linear coefficient of thermal expansion of Cr2AlC. The results presented herein underline the potential of ab initio calculations for predicting the thermal shock behavior of ionically-covalently bonded materials.

  • Single Point Insulin Sensitivity Estimator in Pediatric Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Endocrinology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-2392. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundAttenuated insulin-sensitivity (IS) is a central feature of pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We recently developed a new index, single point insulin sensitivity estimator (SPISE), based on triglycerides, high-density-lipoprotein and body-mass-index (BMI), and validated by euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp-test (EHCT) in adolescents. This study aims to assess the performance of SPISE as an estimation of hepatic insulin (in-)sensitivity. Our results introduce SPISE as a novel and inexpensive index of hepatic insulin resistance, superior to established indices in children and adolescents with obesity. Materials and MethodsNinety-nine pubertal subjects with obesity (13.5 +/- 2.0 years, 59.6% males, overall mean BMI-SDS + 2.8 +/- 0.6) were stratified by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) into a NAFLD (>5% liver-fat-content; male n=41, female n=16) and non-NAFLD (<= 5%; male n=18, female n=24) group. Obesity was defined according to WHO criteria (> 2 BMI-SDS). EHCT were used to determine IS in a subgroup (n=17). Receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC)-curve was performed for diagnostic ability of SPISE, HOMA-IR (homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance), and HIRI (hepatic insulin resistance index), assuming null hypothesis of no difference in area-under-the-curve (AUC) at 0.5. ResultsSPISE was lower in NAFLD (male: 4.8 +/- 1.2, female: 4.5 +/- 1.1) than in non-NAFLD group (male 6.0 +/- 1.6, female 5.6 +/- 1.5; P< 0.05 {95% confidence interval [CI]: male NAFLD 4.5, 5.2; male non-NAFLD 5.2, 6.8; female NAFLD 4.0, 5.1, female non-NAFLD 5.0, 6.2}). In males, ROC-AUC was 0.71 for SPISE (P=0.006, 95% CI: 0.54, 0.87), 0.68 for HOMA-IR (P=0.038, 95% CI: 0.48, 0.88), and 0.50 for HIRI (P=0.543, 95% CI: 0.27, 0.74). In females, ROC-AUC was 0.74 for SPISE (P=0.006), 0.59 for HOMA-IR (P=0.214), and 0.68 for HIRI (P=0.072). The optimal cutoff-level for SPISE between NAFLD and non-NAFLD patients was 5.18 overall (Youden-index: 0.35; sensitivity 0.68%, specificity 0.67%). ConclusionSPISE is significantly lower in juvenile patients with obesity-associated NAFLD. Our results suggest that SPISE indicates hepatic IR in pediatric NAFLD patients with sensitivity and specificity superior to established indices of hepatic IR.

  • Ingår i: Aquatic conservation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1052-7613 .- 1099-0755. ; 33:11, s. 1321-1359

    • Freshwater mussels are declining throughout their range. Their important ecological functions along with insufficient levels of natural recruitment have prompted captive breeding for population augmentation and questions about the usefulness and applicability of such measures. This article reviews the current state of captive breeding and rearing programmes for freshwater mussels in Europe. It considers the various species, strategies, and techniques of propagation, as well as the different levels of effort required according to rearing method, highlighting the key factors of success. Within the last 30 years, 46 breeding activities in 16 European countries have been reported, mainly of Margaritifera margaritifera and Unio crassus. Some facilities propagate species that are in a very critical situation, such as Pseudunio auricularius, Unio mancus, and Unio ravoisieri, or multiple species concurrently. In some streams, the number of released captive-bred mussels already exceeds the size of the remaining natural population. Rearing efforts range from highly intensive laboratory incubation to lower intensity methods using in-river mussel cages or silos. Most breeding efforts are funded by national and EU LIFE(+) grants, are well documented, and consider the genetic integrity of the propagated mussels. Limited long-term funding perspectives, the availability of experienced staff, water quality, and feeding/survival during early life stages are seen as the most important challenges. Successful captive breeding programmes need to be combined with restoration of the habitats into which the mussels are released. This work will benefit from an evidence-based approach, knowledge exchange among facilities, and an overall breeding strategy comprising multiple countries and conservation units.

  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of sputtered coatings with improved hardness-toughness property combination is widely sought after. Multi-element ceramic carbide (Hf-Nb-Ta-Zr)C coatings with excess carbon, synthesized by DC co-sputtering is presented in this study as a promising candidate to achieve this objective. The specific roles of microstructure and residual stress are decoupled in order to understand their influence on the mechanical properties. Extensive mechanical characterization through in situ testing of focused ion beam fabricated microcantilevers and nanoindentation based approaches are adopted to quantitatively separate the effect of residual stresses on the fracture toughness of the (Hf-Nb-Ta-Zr)C coatings. Residual stress free, microcantilever testing in notched and unnotched conditions, in combination with microstructural characterization unambiguously reveals the intrinsic mechanical behavior of coatings, which solely depend on the microstructure. On the other hand, nanoindentation based testing techniques probe the influence of residual stress and microstructure on the measured mechanical properties. The segregation and thickening of carbon-rich clusters, especially to the grain boundaries with increasing deposition temperatures is speculated to lead to substantial degradation in all mechanical properties measured. An easier fracture path through grain boundaries leads to a reduction in fracture resistance, which is possibly related to carbon enrichment.

  • Is it meaningful to quantify vacancy concentrations of nanolamellar (Ti,Al)N thin films based on laser-assisted atom probe data?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, it was proposed to quantify vacancy concentrations based on laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) data for a (Ti,Al)N film with a nanolamellar architecture, grown by chemical vapor deposition. To determine, whether vacancy concentrations can be reliably estimated based on APT data, we systematically compare measurements with an ultraviolet (UV) as well as a green laser to ion beam analysis data. First, monolithic TiN and AlN films, which are stoichiometric within the measurement uncertainties of ion beam analysis, are investigated. In case of TiN an electric field strength of 39.4 V nm  1 and a nitrogen content of 49.0 at.%, consistent with ion beam analysis data, is obtained with both lasers, when using pulse energies of 5 pJ (UV laser) and 0.1 nJ (green laser). However, significant differences can be observed for monolithic AlN as nitrogen contents from 41.9 to 35.8 at.% and 48.4 to 41.4 at.% are measured, depending on variations of the pulse en-ergies of the UV and green laser, respectively. In order to mimic a nanolamellar architecture for correlative compositional analysis by ion beam analysis and laser-assisted APT, a TiN/AlN/TiN trilayer film is synthesized and significant deviations with respect to the nitrogen content are evident for the AlN layer. While the average nitrogen concentration from ion beam analysis is 51 at.%, nitrogen contents from laser-assisted APT data are only 38 at.% (UV laser) or 41 at.% (green laser). Hence, the nitrogen content of the AlN layer is underestimated from laser-assisted APT data by at least 10 and up to 13 at.% and this significant discrepancy cannot be explained by the measurement uncertainties. Thus, the here presented data emphasize that it is not meaningful to quantify vacancy concentrations of nanolamellar (Ti,Al)N thin films solely based on atom probe data, since the measurement accuracy depends on the field evaporation conditions.

  • Opportunities of combinatorial thin film materials design for the sustainable development of magnesium-based alloys
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnesium-based lightweight structural materials exhibit potential for energy savings. However, the state-of-the-art quest for novel compositions with improved properties through conventional bulk metallurgy is time, energy, and material intensive. Here, the opportunities provided by combinatorial thin film materials design for the sustainable development of magnesium alloys are evaluated. To characterise the impurity level of (Mg,Ca) solid solution thin films within grains and grain boundaries, scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography are correlatively employed. It is demonstrated that control of the microstructure enables impurity levels similar to bulk-processed alloys. In order to substantially reduce time, energy, and material requirements for the sustainable development of magnesium alloys, we propose a three-stage materials design strategy: (1) Efficient and systematic investigation of composition-dependent phase formation by combinatorial film growth. (2) Correlation of microstructural features and mechanical properties for selected composition ranges by rapid alloy prototyping. (3) Establishment of synthesis-microstructure-property relationships by conventional bulk metallurgy.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the decomposition mechanisms of metastable cubic (c-)(V0.64Al0.36)(0.49)N-0.51 thin films, grown by reactive high power pulsed magnetron sputtering, by combination of structural and compositional characterization at the nanometer scale with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on thermodynamic considerations of partial derivative(2)Delta G/partial derivative x(2) < 0, spinodal decomposition is expected for c-V1-xAlxN with x >= 0.35. While no indications for spinodal decomposition are observable from laboratory and synchroton diffraction data after annealing in Ar atmosphere at 1300 degrees C, the formation of wurtzite (w-)AlN is evident after annealing at 900 degrees C by utilizing high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. However, the complementary nature of elemental V and Al maps, obtained by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy mode, imply spinodal decomposition of c-(V0.64Al0.36)(0.49)N-0.51 into V- and Al-rich cubic nitride phases after annealing at 900 degrees C. These chemical modulations are quantified by atom probe tomography and maximum variations of x in V1-xAlxN are in the range of 0.36 to 0.50. The magnitude of the compositional modulations is enhanced after annealing at 1100 degrees C as x varies on average between 0.30 and 0.61, while the modulation wavelength remains unchanged at approximately 8 nm. Based on DFT data, the local x variation from 0.30 to 0.61 would cause lattice parameter variations from 4.111 to 4.099 angstrom. This difference corresponds to a shift of the (200) peak from 44.0 to 44.1 degrees. As the maximum decomposition-induced peak separation magnitude of 0.1 degrees is significantly smaller than the measured full width at half maximum of 0.4 degrees, spinodal decomposition cannot be unravelled by diffraction data. However, consistent with DFT predictions, spinodal decomposition in c-(V0.64Al0.36)(0.49)N-0.51 is revealed by chemical composition characterization at the nanometer scale.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The American Journal of Psychiatry. - 1535-7228.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Specific phobia is a common anxiety disorder, but the literature on associated brain structure alterations exhibits substantial gaps. The ENIGMA Anxiety Working Group examined brain structure differences between individuals with specific phobias and healthy control subjects as well as between the animal and blood-injection-injury (BII) subtypes of specific phobia. Additionally, the authors investigated associations of brain structure with symptom severity and age (youths vs. adults).Data sets from 31 original studies were combined to create a final sample with 1,452 participants with phobia and 2,991 healthy participants (62.7% female; ages 5-90). Imaging processing and quality control were performed using established ENIGMA protocols. Subcortical volumes as well as cortical surface area and thickness were examined in a preregistered analysis.Compared with the healthy control group, the phobia group showed mostly smaller subcortical volumes, mixed surface differences, and larger cortical thickness across a substantial number of regions. The phobia subgroups also showed differences, including, as hypothesized, larger medial orbitofrontal cortex thickness in BII phobia (N=182) compared with animal phobia (N=739). All findings were driven by adult participants; no significant results were observed in children and adolescents.Brain alterations associated with specific phobia exceeded those of other anxiety disorders in comparable analyses in extent and effect size and were not limited to reductions in brain structure. Moreover, phenomenological differences between phobia subgroups were reflected in diverging neural underpinnings, including brain areas related to fear processing and higher cognitive processes. The findings implicate brain structure alterations in specific phobia, although subcortical alterations in particular may also relate to broader internalizing psychopathology.

  • Enhanced thermal stability of (Ti,Al)N coatings by oxygen incorporation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal stability of protective coatings is one of the performance-defining properties for advanced cutting and forming applications as well as for energy conversion. To investigate the effect of oxygen incorporation on the high-temperature behavior of (Ti,Al)N, metastable cubic (Ti,Al)N and (Ti,Al)(OxN1-x) coatings are synthesized using reactive arc evaporation. X-ray diffraction of (Ti,Al)N and (Ti,Al)(OxN1-x) coatings reveals that spinodal decomposition is initiated at approximately 800 degrees C, while the subsequent formation of wurtzite solid solution is clearly delayed from 1000 degrees C to 1300 degrees C for (Ti,Al)(OxN1-x) compared to (Ti,Al)N. This thermal stability enhancement can be rationalized based on calculated vacancy formation energies in combination with spatially-resolved composition analysis and calorimetric data: Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atom probe tomography data indicate a lower O solubility in wurtzite solid solution compared to cubic (Ti,Al)(O,N). Hence, it is evident that for the growth of the wurtzite, AlN-rich phase in (Ti,Al)N, only mobility of Ti and Al is required, while for (Ti,Al)(O,N), in addition to mobile metal atoms, also non-metal mobility is required. Prerequisite for mobility on the non-metal sublattice is the formation of non-metal vacancies which require larger temperatures than for the metal sublattice due to significantly larger magnitudes of formation energies for the non-metal vacancies compared to the metal vacancies. This notion is consistent with calorimetry data which indicate that the combined energy necessary to form and grow the wurtzite phase is larger by a factor of approximately two in (Ti,Al)(O,N) than in (Ti,Al)N, causing the here reported thermal stability increase. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of changes induced by ion irradiation on structure and thermal stability of metastable cubic (Ti,Al)N coatings deposited by cathodic arc evaporation is systematically investigated by correlating experiments and theory. Decreasing the nitrogen deposition pressure from 5.0 to 0.5 Pa results in an ion flux-enhancement by a factor of three and an increase of the average ion energy from 15 to 30 eV, causing the stress-free lattice parameter to expand from 4.170 to 4.206 Å, while the chemical composition of Ti0.27Al0.21N0.52 remains unchanged. The 0.9% lattice parameter increase is a consequence of formation of Frenkel pairs induced by ion bombardment, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The influence of the presence of Frenkel pairs on the thermal stability of metastable Ti0.27Al0.21N0.52 is investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, atom probe tomography and in-situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. It is demonstrated that the ion flux and ion energy induced formation of Frenkel pairs increases the thermal stability as the Al diffusion enabled crystallization of the wurtzite solid solution is retarded. This can be rationalized by DFT predictions since the presence of Frenkel pairs increases the activation energy for Al diffusion by up to 142%. Hence, the thermal stability enhancement is caused by a hitherto unreported mechanism - the Frenkel pair impeded Al mobility and thereby retarded formation of wurtzite solid solution.

    • Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) and phosphorylated tau (pTau) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reflect core features of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) more directly than clinical diagnosis. Initiated by the European Alzheimer & Dementia Biobank (EADB), the largest collaborative effort on genetics underlying CSF biomarkers was established, including 31 cohorts with a total of 13,116 individuals (discovery n=8074; replication n=5042 individuals). Besides the APOE locus, novel associations with two other well-established AD risk loci were observed; CR1 was shown a locus for Aβ42 and BIN1 for pTau. GMNC and C16orf95 were further identified as loci for pTau, of which the latter is novel. Clustering methods exploring the influence of all known AD risk loci on the CSF protein levels, revealed 4 biological categories suggesting multiple Aβ42 and pTau related biological pathways involved in the etiology of AD. In functional follow-up analyses, GMNC and C16orf95 both associated with lateral ventricular volume, implying an overlap in genetic etiology for tau levels and brain ventricular volume.

  • Association between alanine aminotransferase as surrogate of fatty liver disease and physical activity and sedentary time in adolescents with obesity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pediatrics. - : Springer. - 0340-6199 .- 1432-1076. ; 181:8, s. 3119-3129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To compare patterns of sedentary (SED) time (more sedentary, SED + vs less sedentary, SED-), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) time (more active, MVPA + vs less active, MVPA-), and combinations of behaviors (SED-/MVPA + , SED-/MVPA-, SED + /MVPA + , SED + /MVPA-) regarding nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) markers. This cross-sectional study included 134 subjects (13.4 +/- 2.2 years, body mass index (BMI) 98.9 +/- 0.7 percentile, 48.5% females) who underwent 24-h/7-day accelerometry, anthropometric, and biochemical markers (alanine aminotransferase (ALT) as first criterion, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), AST/ALT ratio as secondary criteria). A subgroup of 39 patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging-liver fat content (MRI-LFC). Hepatic health was better in SED- (lower ALT, GGT, and MRI-LFC (p < 0.05), higher AST/ALT (p < 0.01)) vs SED + and in MVPA + (lower ALT (p < 0.05), higher AST/ALT (p < 0.01)) vs MVPA- groups after adjustment for age, gender, and Tanner stages. SED-/MVPA + group had the best hepatic health. SED-/MVPA- group had lower ALT and GGT and higher AST/ALT (p < 0.05) in comparison with SED + /MVPA + group independently of BMI. SED time was positively associated with biochemical (high ALT, low AST/ALT ratio) and imaging (high MRI-LFC) markers independently of MVPA. MVPA time was associated with biochemical markers (low ALT, high AST/ALT) but these associations were no longer significant after adjustment for SED time. Conclusion: Lower SED time is associated with better hepatic health independently of MVPA. Reducing SED time might be a first step in the management of pediatric obesity NAFLD when increasing MVPA is not possible.

  • Association between Metabolic Syndrome Diagnosis and the Physical Activity-Sedentary Profile of Adolescents with Obesity : A Complementary Analysis of the Beta-JUDO Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent in children and adolescents with obesity and places them at an increased risk of cardiovascular-related diseases. However, the associations between objectively measured movement-related behaviors and MetS diagnosis remain unexplored in youths with obesity. The aim was to compare profiles of sedentary (SED) time (more sedentary, SED+ vs. less sedentary, SED-), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) time (more active, MVPA+ vs. less active, MVPA-) and combinations of behaviors (SED-/MVPA+, SED-/MVPA-, SED+/MVPA+, SED+/MVPA-) regarding the MetS diagnosis. One hundred and thirty-four adolescents with obesity (13.4 +/- 2.2 years) underwent 24 h/7 day accelerometry, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), triglycerides (TG) and insulin-resistance (IR) assessments. Cumulative cardiometabolic risk was assessed by using (i) MetS status (usual dichotomic definition) and (ii) cardiometabolic risk z-score (MetScore, mean of standardized WC, BP, IR, TG and inverted HDL-c). SED- vs. SED+ and MVPA+ vs. MVPA- had lower MetS (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001) and MetScore (p < 0.001). SED-/MVPA+ had the lowest risk. While SED and MVPA times were lower in SED-/MVPA- vs. SED+/MVPA+ (p < 0.001), MetScore was lower in SED-/MVPA- independently of body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.05). MVPA, but not SED, time was independently associated with MetS diagnosis (p < 0.05). Both MVPA (p < 0.01) and SED times (p < 0.05) were associated with MetScore independently of each other. A higher MVPA and lower SED time are associated with lower cumulative cardiometabolic risk.

    • Background Relationships between movement-related behaviours and metabolic health remain underexplored in adolescents with obesity. Objectives To compare profiles of sedentary time (more sedentary, SED+ vs. less sedentary, SED-), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) time (more active, MVPA+ vs. less active, MVPA-) and combinations of behaviours (SED-/MVPA+, SED-/MVPA-, SED+/MVPA+, SED+/MVPA-) in regard to metabolic health. Methods One hundred and thirty-four subjects (mean age 13.4 +/- 2.2 yrs, mean body mass index [BMI] 98.9 +/- 0.7 percentile, 48.5% females) underwent 24 h/7 day accelerometry, anthropometric, body composition, blood pressure (BP), lipid profile and insulin resistance (IR) assessments. Results Metabolic health was better in SED- [lower fat mass (FM) percentage (p < 0.05), blood pressure (BP) (p < 0.05), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (p < 0.001) and metabolic syndrome risk score (MetScore) (p < 0.001), higher high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) (p = 0.001)] vs. SED+ group and in MVPA+ [lower triglyceridemia (TG), (p < 0.05), HOMA-IR (p < 0.01) and MetScore (p < 0.001), higher HDL-c (p < 0.01)] vs. MVPA- group after adjustment with age, gender, maturation and BMI. SED-/MVPA+ group had the best metabolic health. While sedentary (p < 0.001) but also MVPA times (p < 0.001) were lower in SED-/MVPA- vs. SED+/MVPA+, SED-/MVPA- had lower FM percentage (p < 0.05), HOMA-IR (p < 0.01) and MetScore (p < 0.05) and higher HDL-c (p < 0.05), independently of BMI. Sedentary time was positively correlated with HOMA-IR and Metscore and negatively correlated with HDL-c after adjustment with MVPA (p < 0.05). MVPA was negatively correlated with HOMA-IR, BP and MetScore and positively correlated with HDL-c after adjustment with sedentary time (p < 0.05).Conclusion Lower sedentary time is associated with a better metabolic health independently of MVPA and might be a first step in the management of pediatric obesity when increasing MVPA is not possible.

  • Unravelling the ion-energy-dependent structure evolution and its implications for the elastic properties of (V,Al)N thin films
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion irradiation-induced changes in the structure and mechanical properties of metastable cubic (V,Al)N deposited by reactive high power pulsed magnetron sputtering are systematically investigated by correlating experiments and theory in the ion kinetic energy (Ek) range from 4 to 154 eV. Increasing Ek results in film densification and the evolution from a columnar (111) oriented structure at Ek ≤ 24 eV to a fine-grained structure with (100) preferred orientation for Ek ≥ 104 eV. Furthermore, the compressive intrinsic stress increases by 336 % to -4.8 GPa as Ek is increased from 4 to 104 eV. Higher ion kinetic energy causes stress relaxation to -2.7 GPa at 154 eV. These ion irradiation-induced changes in the thin film stress state are in good agreement with density functional theory simulations. Furthermore, the measured elastic moduli of (V,Al)N thin films exhibit no significant dependence on Ek. The apparent independence of the elastic modulus on Ek can be rationalized by considering the concurrent and balancing effects of bombardment-induced formation of Frenkel pairs (causing a decrease in elastic modulus) and evolution of compressive intrinsic stress (causing an increase in elastic modulus). Hence, the evolution of the film stresses and mechanical properties can be understood based on the complex interplay of ion irradiation-induced defect generation and annihilation.

  • Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression : A Systematic Review and Individual Patient Data Network Meta-analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: JAMA psychiatry. - : American Medical Association. - 2168-6238 .- 2168-622X. ; 78:4, s. 361-371
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IMPORTANCE: Personalized treatment choices would increase the effectiveness of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) for depression to the extent that patients differ in interventions that better suit them.OBJECTIVE: To provide personalized estimates of short-term and long-term relative efficacy of guided and unguided iCBT for depression using patient-level information.DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, and Cochrane Library to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published up to January 1, 2019.STUDY SELECTION: Eligible RCTs were those comparing guided or unguided iCBT against each other or against any control intervention in individuals with depression. Available individual patient data (IPD) was collected from all eligible studies. Depression symptom severity was assessed after treatment, 6 months, and 12 months after randomization.DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: We conducted a systematic review and IPD network meta-analysis and estimated relative treatment effect sizes across different patient characteristics through IPD network meta-regression.MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores.RESULTS: Of 42 eligible RCTs, 39 studies comprising 9751 participants with depression contributed IPD to the IPD network meta-analysis, of which 8107 IPD were synthesized. Overall, both guided and unguided iCBT were associated with more effectiveness as measured by PHQ-9 scores than control treatments over the short term and the long term. Guided iCBT was associated with more effectiveness than unguided iCBT (mean difference [MD] in posttreatment PHQ-9 scores, -0.8; 95% CI, -1.4 to -0.2), but we found no evidence of a difference at 6 or 12 months following randomization. Baseline depression was found to be the most important modifier of the relative association for efficacy of guided vs unguided iCBT. Differences between unguided and guided iCBT in people with baseline symptoms of subthreshold depression (PHQ-9 scores 5-9) were small, while guided iCBT was associated with overall better outcomes in patients with baseline PHQ-9 greater than 9.CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this network meta-analysis with IPD, guided iCBT was associated with more effectiveness than unguided iCBT for individuals with depression, benefits were more substantial in individuals with moderate to severe depression. Unguided iCBT was associated with similar effectiveness among individuals with symptoms of mild/subthreshold depression. Personalized treatment selection is entirely possible and necessary to ensure the best allocation of treatment resources for depression.

  • Morphology, mechanical properties, and oxidation behavior of stoichiometric Ti0.33-xAlxB0.67 coatings (x=0.04, 0.15, 0.21, and 0.28)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stoichiometric Ti0.33-xAlxB0.67 coatings with x = 0.04, 0.15, 0.21, and 0.28 were synthesized by magnetron sputtering and characterized regarding phase formation, mechanical properties, and oxidation behavior. By increasing the Al concentration from 4 to 28 at.%, the measured elastic modulus (496±19 GPa) and unit cell volume (25.646 Å3 ) decreased by 33 and 0.8 %, respectively. The Al concentration induced changes in measured elastic modulus and unit cell volume are in very good agreement with ab initio predictions, as the maximum deviations between experiment and theory, observed here, are 12 and 1.1 %, respectively. The corresponding hardness values decreased by 45 % from 22±1 to 12±1 GPa. The oxidation experiments were performed in ambient air at 700, 800, and 900 °C for 1, 4, and 8 h. Analysis by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed a bimodal, strongly Al concentration-dependent oxidation behavior where films containing ≤15 at.% of Al form a porous, non-passivating crystalline oxide scale containing Ti -rich as well as Al -rich oxide regions, while the formation of a passivating, dense, X-ray amorphous oxide scale was observed for films containing ≥ 21 at.% of Al. Coincident with the passive scale formation for Al concentrations ≥ 21 at.%, the elastic modulus decreases by ≥ 32.6 % compared to TiB2 and can be rationalized based on Al concentration induced bond weakening as revealed by the concomitant cohesive energy reduction of ≥ 22 %.
