  • Polarization measurements in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 86:14, s. 2975-2979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the d(γ⃗,p⃗)n reaction at θc.m. = 90° for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. The induced polarization py vanishes above 1 GeV, contrary to meson-baryon model expectations, in which resonances lead to large polarizations. However, the polarization transfer Cx does not vanish above 1 GeV, inconsistent with hadron helicity conservation. Thus, we show that the scaling behavior observed in the d(γ,p)ncross sections is not a result of perturbative QCD. These data should provide important tests of new nonperturbative calculations in the intermediate energy regime.

  • High energy angular distribution measurements of the exclusive deuteron photodisintegration reaction
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 66:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first complete measurements of the angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section at photon energies above 1.6 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results show a persistent forward-backward asymmetry up to E-gamma=2.4 GeV, the highest-energy measured in this experiment. The Hard Rescattering and the Quark-Gluon string models are in fair agreement with the results.

  • Polarization measurements in neutral pion photoproduction
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 66:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the H-1((γ) over right arrow,(p) over right arrow)pi(0) reaction for theta(c.m.)(pi) = 60degrees-135degrees and for photon energies up to 4.1 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. Various theoretical models are compared with the results. No evidence for hadron helicity conservation is observed. Models that employ factorization are not favored. It appears from the strong angular dependence of the induced polarization at photon energies of 2.5 and 3.1 GeV that a relatively high spin resonance or background amplitude might exist in this energy region.

  • Nuclear transparency with the gamma n ->pi(-)p process in He-4
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 68:2: 021001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured the nuclear transparency of the fundamental process gamman-->pi(-)p in He-4. These measurements were performed at Jefferson Lab in the photon energy range of 1.6-4.5 GeV and at theta(cm)(pi)=70degrees and 90degrees. These measurements are the first of their kind in the study of nuclear transparency in photoreactions. They also provide a benchmark test of Glauber calculations based on traditional models of nuclear physics. The transparency results suggest deviations from the traditional nuclear physics picture. The momentum transfer dependence of the measured nuclear transparency is consistent with Glauber calculations that include the quantum chromodynamics phenomenon of color transparency.

  • Consequences of eliminating adenosine A(1) receptors in mice
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Drug Development Research (Proceedings of the Seventh International Symposium on Adenosine and Adenine Nucleotides - Part 1). - : Wiley. - 1098-2299 .- 0272-4391. ; 58, s. 350-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The second coding exon of the adenosine A, receptor gene was eliminated by homologous recombination. The phenotype of mice (mixed C57B6/129OlaHsd background) was studied, using siblings from matings of heterozygous mice. Among the offspring the ratio between+/+, +/-and -/-animals was 1:2:1. Over the first half-year-at least-growth and viability were the same in all genotypes. Binding of A(1) ligands was eliminated in-/-mice and halved in+/-mice. Blood pressure was increased in-/-mice and this was paralleled by an increase in plasma renin. Heart rate was unaffected, as was contractility. Furthermore, the response of the perfused heart to ischemia was similar in+/+and -/-hearts. However, remote preconditioning was eliminated in-/-mouse hearts. Tubuloglomerular feedback in the kidney was also lost in-/-mice. The analgesic response to a non-selective adenosing receptor agonist was lost in-/-mice, which also showed hyperalgesia in the tail-flick test. There was a slight hypoactivity in-/-mice, but responses to caffeine were essentially normal. The inhibition of excitatory neurotransmission in hippocampus by adenosine was lost in-/-mice and reduced in+/-mice. Responses to ATP were affected similarly. Hypoxic depression of synaptic transmission was essentially eliminated in hippocampus and hypoxic decrease in spinal respiratory neuron firing was markedly reduced. These results show that adenosine A, receptors play a physiologically important role in the kidney, spinal cord, and hippocampus and that they are critically important in the adaptive responses to hypoxia. • Redox hydrogel-based bienzyme microelectrodes for amperometric monitoring of L-glutamate
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Electroanalysis. - 1040-0397. ; 14:6, s. 393-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fabrication and characterization of amperometric bienzyme L-glutamate sensitive microelectrodes are the prerequisite for monitoring changes Of L-glutamate concentration at glutamate-secreting cell cultures. The design of the glutamate microelectrodes is based on incorporating L-glutamate oxidase and horseradish peroxidase into a redox-hydrogel containing PVI19-dmeOs as the redox mediator and immobilizing this system onto the surface of platinum microdisk electrodes using, a dip-coating procedure. For amperometric measurements Of L-glutamate, these redox hydrogel-based bienzyme microelectrodes can be operated at low working potentials (-50 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) decreasing the influence of electroactive interferants possibly present in biological samples. The L-glutamate microsensors are characterized by a good operation stability and sensitivity (0.038+/-0.005 mAM(-1)), a low detection limit (0.5 muM in a conventional amperometric set-up and 0.03 muM in a Faraday cage, defined as three times the signal-to-noise ratio), a linear range up to 50 muM and a response time of about 35 s. The glutamate biosensors have been applied for the direct measurement Of L-glutamate release (upon chemical stimulation) from a population of immortalized hippocampal neurons (HN10 cells) demonstrating the possibility to amperometrically monitor in-Situ L-glutamate secretion from these cells.

  • Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry and scanning electrochemical microscopy studies of the pH-dependent dissolution of 2-electron mediators immobilized on zirconium phosphate containing carbon pastes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Electroanalysis. - 1040-0397. ; 14:21, s. 1479-1487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detailed study is presented on the leaking of two different 2-electron-transfer redox mediators from zirconium phosphate-modified carbon-paste electrodes. Two redox mediators commonly used in bioelectrochemistry, viz. methylene green and riboflavin, were adsorbed on zirconium phosphate and further integrated into carbon paste. Fast scan cyclic voltammetry and scanning electrochemical microscopy were used to characterize the leakage of these redox mediators at different pH conditions. It could be shown that an exposure to acidic pH-values significantly increased the rate of their leakage from the mediator-zirconium phosphate-modified carbon paste, whereas a tight adsorption was observed at neutral pH.

  • Logic programming in the context of multiparadigm programming : the Oz experience
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Theory and Practice of Logic Programming. - 1471-0684 .- 1475-3081. ; 3, s. 717-763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oz is a multiparadigm language that supports logic programming as one of its major paradigms. A multiparadigm language is designed to support different programming paradigms (logic, functional, constraint, object-oriented, sequential, concurrent, etc.) with equal ease. This paper has two goals: to give a tutorial of logic programming in Oz; and to show how logic programming fits naturally into the wider context of multiparadigm programming. Our experience shows that there are two classes of problems, which we call algorithmic and search problems, for which logic programming can help formulate practical solutions. Algorithmic problems have known efficient algorithms. Search problems do not have known efficient algorithms but can be solved with search. The Oz support for logic programming targets these two problem classes specifically, using the concepts needed for each. This is in contrast to the Prolog approach, which targets both classes with one set of concepts, which results in less than optimal support for each class. We give examples that can be run interactively on the Mozart system, which implements Oz, To explain the essential difference between algorithmic and search programs, we define the Oz execution model. This model subsumes both concurrent logic programming (committed-choice-style) and search-based logic programming (Prolog-style). Furthermore, as consequences of its multiparadigm nature, the model supports new abilities such as first-class top levels, deep guards, active objects, and sophisticated control of the search process. Instead of Horn clause syntax, Oz has a simple, fully compositional, higher-order syntax that accommodates the abilities of the language. We give a brief history of Oz that traces the development of its main ideas and we summarize the lessons learned from this work. Finally, we give many entry points into the Oz literature.

  • Morphology, structure, and electronic properties of Ce@C-82 films on Ag : Si(111)-(root 3x root 3)R30 degrees
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028. ; 564:1-3, s. 156-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adsorption behaviour and electronic properties of Ce@C-82 molecules on the Ag: Si(l I I)-(root3 x root3)R30degrees surface have been studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy. Submonolayer coverages and multilayer films of Ce@C-82 comprise highly ordered molecular domains which have a single, well-defined orientation with respect to the underlying substrate crystallographic axes. UPS spectra reveal that the Ce@C-82 films are semiconducting with a band gap of at least 0.3 eV and, as for La@C-82, contain low binding energy peaks related to charge transfer from the encapsulated atom to the fullerene molecular orbitals. The valence state of the incarcerated Ce has been probed by Ce 3d XPS for both 'as-deposited' and air-exposed Ce@C-82 monolayers. There is little change in the 'close to 3 +' valence state of the Ce atom-and little evidence of Cc oxidation-following exposure of a Ce@C-82 monolayer to atmosphere for a period of 10 months. • Cross-section measurement of charged-pion photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 91:2: 022003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured the differential cross section for the gamman-->pi(-)p and gammap-->pi(+)n reactions at theta(c.m.)=90degrees in the photon energy range from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The data at E(gamma)greater than or similar to3.3 GeV exhibit a global scaling behavior for both pi(-) and pi(+) photoproduction, consistent with the constituent counting rule and the existing pi(+) photoproduction data. Possible oscillations around the scaling value are suggested by these new data. The data show enhancement in the scaled cross section at a center-of-mass energy near 2.2 GeV. The cross section ratio of exclusive pi(-) to pi(+) photoproduction at high energy is consistent with the prediction based on one-hard-gluon-exchange diagrams.
