  • Electroweak measurements in electron positron collisions at W-boson-pair energies at LEP
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 532:4, s. 119-244
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3 fb(-1) collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, 13 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 GeV to 209 GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant WW and ZZ production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in WW production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, m(w) and Gamma(w), the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B(W -> had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g(1)(Z), K-gamma and lambda(gamma), are determined to be: m(w) = 80.376 +/- 0.033 GeV Gamma(w) = 2.195 +/- 0.083 GeV B(W -> had) = 67.41 +/- 0.27% g(1)(Z) = 0.984(-0.020)(+0.018) K-gamma - 0.982 +/- 0.042 lambda(gamma) = 0.022 +/- 0.019. • Overview of physics results from MAST towards ITER/DEMO and the MAST Upgrade
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 53:10, s. 104008-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New diagnostic, modelling and plant capability on the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST) have delivered important results in key areas for ITER/DEMO and the upcoming MAST Upgrade, a step towards future ST devices on the path to fusion currently under procurement. Micro-stability analysis of the pedestal highlights the potential roles of micro-tearing modes and kinetic ballooning modes for the pedestal formation. Mitigation of edge localized modes (ELM) using resonant magnetic perturbation has been demonstrated for toroidal mode numbers n = 3, 4, 6 with an ELM frequency increase by up to a factor of 9, compatible with pellet fuelling. The peak heat flux of mitigated and natural ELMs follows the same linear trend with ELM energy loss and the first ELM-resolved T-i measurements in the divertor region are shown. Measurements of flow shear and turbulence dynamics during L-H transitions show filaments erupting from the plasma edge whilst the full flow shear is still present. Off-axis neutral beam injection helps to strongly reduce the redistribution of fast-ions due to fishbone modes when compared to on-axis injection. Low-k ion-scale turbulence has been measured in L-mode and compared to global gyro-kinetic simulations. A statistical analysis of principal turbulence time scales shows them to be of comparable magnitude and reasonably correlated with turbulence decorrelation time. T-e inside the island of a neoclassical tearing mode allow the analysis of the island evolution without assuming specific models for the heat flux. Other results include the discrepancy of the current profile evolution during the current ramp-up with solutions of the poloidal field diffusion equation, studies of the anomalous Doppler resonance compressional Alfven eigenmodes, disruption mitigation studies and modelling of the new divertor design for MAST Upgrade. The novel 3D electron Bernstein synthetic imaging shows promising first data sensitive to the edge current profile and flows.

  • Overview of physics results from MAST
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 51:9, s. 094013 (paper no.)-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Major developments on the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) have enabled important advances in support of ITER and the physics basis of a spherical tokamak (ST) based component test facility (CTF), as well as providing new insight into underlying tokamak physics. For example, L-H transition studies benefit from high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of pedestal profile evolution (temperature, density and radial electric field) and in support of pedestal stability studies the edge current density profile has been inferred from motional Stark effect measurements. The influence of the q-profile and E x B flow shear on transport has been studied in MAST and equilibrium flow shear has been included in gyro-kinetic codes, improving comparisons with the experimental data. H-modes exhibit a weaker q and stronger collisionality dependence of heat diffusivity than implied by IPB98(gamma, 2) scaling, which may have important implications for the design of an ST-based CTF. ELM mitigation, an important issue for ITER, has been demonstrated by applying resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) using both internal and external coils, but full stabilization of type-I ELMs has not been observed. Modelling shows the importance of including the plasma response to the RMP fields. MAST plasmas with q > 1 and weak central magnetic shear regularly exhibit a long-lived saturated ideal internal mode. Measured plasma braking in the presence of this mode compares well with neo-classical toroidal viscosity theory. In support of basic physics understanding, high resolution Thomson scattering measurements are providing new insight into sawtooth crash dynamics and neo-classical tearing mode critical island widths. Retarding field analyser measurements show elevated ion temperatures in the scrape-off layer of L-mode plasmas and, in the presence of type-I ELMs, ions with energy greater than 500 eV are detected 20 cm outside the separatrix. Disruption mitigation by massive gas injection has reduced divertor heat loads by up to 70%.

  • Suppression of the quantum-confined Stark effect in AlxGa1-xN/AlyGa1-yN corrugated quantum wells
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 114:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report comparative studies of 6-nm-thick AlxGa1-xN/AlyGa1-yN pyroelectric quantum wells (QWs) grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on c-sapphire substrates with a thick AlN buffer deposited under different growth conditions. The Al-rich growth conditions result in a 2D growth mode and formation of a planar QW, whereas the N-rich conditions lead to a 3D growth mode and formation of a QW corrugated on the size scale of 200-300 nm. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal a strong quantum-confined Stark effect in the planar QW, manifested by a long PL lifetime and a red shift of the PL line. In the corrugated QW, the emission line emerges 200 meV higher in energy, the low-temperature PL lifetime is 40 times shorter, and the PL intensity is stronger (similar to 4 times at 4.5K and similar to 60 times at 300 K). The improved emission properties are explained by suppression of the quantum-confined Stark effect due to the reduction of the built-in electric field within the QW planes, which are not normal to the [0001] direction, enhanced carrier localization, and improved efficiency of light extraction.

  • AlGaN Quantum Well Heterostructures for Mid-Ultraviolet Emitters with Improved Room Temperature Quantum Efficiency
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. A. - : POLISH ACAD SCIENCES INST PHYSICS. - 0587-4246 .- 1898-794X. ; 126:5, s. 1140-1142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on optical studies of exciton localization and recombination kinetics in two single 2.2 nm thick AlxGa1-xN/Alx+0.1Ga0.9-xN quantum well structures (x = 0.55 and 0.6) grown by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy on a c-sapphire substrate. Strong localization potential inherent for both the quantum well and barrier regions results in merging of the quantum well and barrier emission spectra into a single broad line centered at 285 nm (x = 0.55) and 275 nm (x = 0.6). Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements revealed surprising temperature stability of the photoluminescence decay time constant (approximate to 400 ps) relevant to the recombination of the quantum well localized excitons. This observation implies nearly constant quantum efficiency of the quantum well emission in the whole range from 4.6 to 300 K.

  • Multiple Effects of Changes in Arctic Snow Cover
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40, s. 32-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snow cover plays a major role in the climate, hydrological and ecological systems of the Arctic and other regions through its influence on the surface energy balance (e.g. reflectivity), water balance (e.g. water storage and release), thermal regimes (e.g. insulation), vegetation and trace gas fluxes. Feedbacks to the climate system have global consequences. The livelihoods and well-being of Arctic residents and many services for the wider population depend on snow conditions so changes have important consequences. Already, changing snow conditions, particularly reduced summer soil moisture, winter thaw events and rain-on-snow conditions have negatively affected commercial forestry, reindeer herding, some wild animal populations and vegetation. Reductions in snow cover are also adversely impacting indigenous peoples' access to traditional foods with negative impacts on human health and well-being. However, there are likely to be some benefits from a changing Arctic snow regime such as more even run-off from melting snow that favours hydropower operations.

  • Structure of the O-specific polysaccharide from Shewanella japonica KMM 3601 containing 5,7-diacetamido-3,5,7,9-tetradeoxy-ᴅ-glycero-ᴅ-talo-non-2-ulosonic acid
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Biochemistry (Moscow). - 0006-2979 .- 1608-3040. ; 76:7, s. 791-796
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Structure of the O-specific polysaccharide chain of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Shewanella japonica KMM 3601 was elucidated. The initial and O-deacylated LPS as well as a trisaccharide representing the O-deacetylated repeating unit of the O-specific  polysaccharide were studied by sugar analysis along with 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The polysaccharide was found to contain a rare higher sugar, 5,7-diacetamido-3,5,7,9-tetradeoxy-ᴅ-glycero-ᴅ-talo-non-2-ulosonic acid (a derivative of 4-epilegionaminic acid, 4eLeg). The following structure of the trisaccharide repeating unit was established: →4)-α-4eLegp5Ac7Ac-(2→4)-β-ᴅ-GlcpA3Ac-(1→3)-β-ᴅ-GalpNAc-(1→.
