  • Benzenecarboxylate surface complexation at the goethite (alpha-FeOOH)/water interface : I. A mechanistic description of pyromellitate surface complexes from the combined evidence of infrared spectroscopy, potentiometry, adsorption data, and surface complexation modeling
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 16:13, s. 5719-5729
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An investigation combining IR spectroscopy, potentiometric titrations, and adsorption experiments was carried out to study pyromellitate (1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate) sorption at the goethite (α-FeOOH)/water interface. The IR spectra show evidence of outer-sphere complexation throughout the pH range from 3 to 9. Below pH 6 additional IR spectroscopic features appear, which are tentatively assigned to inner-sphere complexes. A normalized IR peak area plot for each peak indicative of inner- and of outer-sphere complexes as a function of pH provided a semiquantitative surface speciation scheme. This scheme was successfully reproduced using surface complexation theory with a multisite complexation model calibrated on potentiometric titration and on adsorption data. The surface speciation was described with a binuclear outer-sphere complex on the {110} plane of goethite and a mononuclear inner-sphere complex on the {001} plane. Furthermore, as the IR spectra also indicated partial protonation of pyromellitate complexes at low pH, a partially protonated outer-sphere species on the {110} plane was included in the model.

  • Fine mapping of a tumour suppressor candidate gene region in 1p36.2-3, commonly deleted in neuroblastomas and germ cell tumours.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Medical and pediatric oncology. - 0098-1532 .- 1096-911X. ; 36:1, s. 61-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: A common genetic feature of neuroblastomas, which is also an important prognostic factor, is deletion of chromosome region 1p. The deletion of 1p often involves a deletion of varying size, with a consensus region within the most distal bands 1p36.2-3. The neuroblastoma SRO (shortest region of overlap of (deletions) presented earlier by our group was defined distally by the cluster of loci D1S80/ D1Z2/CDC2L1 and proximally by loci D1S244, i.e., approximately 25 cM. The 1p deletions are, however, not restricted to neuroblastoma tumours. In fact, a large spectrum of tumour types display deletions to varying degrees of 1p. PROCEDURE: We have exploited the possibility of using deletions of other tumour types, preferentially that of germ cell tumours, and combining the deletions with that of the neuroblastoma SRO. Also in germ cell tumours, distal 1p-deletions have been shown to have prognostic significance. RESULTS: We found in our germ cell tumours a SRO ranging from D1S508 to D1S200. Interestingly, this region only partially overlapped (approximately 5 cm) with our neuroblastoma SRO in region D1S508 to D1S244. We have thus focused on analysing this smaller region in the search for genes involved in the genesis of different cancers. We have performed radiation hybrid mapping of a large number of markers, STSs, ESTs, and others known to reside in 1p. We have also initiated the development of a BAC contig of the region. FISH, and fibre-FISH mapping of BACs were also performed. CONCLUSIONS: The data presented here constitute an ongoing work with the aim of identifying and cloning gene(s) important for development of germ cell tumours, neuroblastomas, and possibly other tumours.

  • [Burn injuries in Sweden 1987-1996. The number of hospitalized patients has been reduced and the mortality lowered by 70 per cent].
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205 .- 1652-7518. ; 98:18, s. 2184-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous improvement in burn trauma care has led to decreasing mortality, morbidity, and length of hospital stay. Current data from the Swedish population is lacking, which was the reason for this investigation. Data was gathered from the Swedish database for medical care (based on ICD-9). All Swedish care providers are enrolled and assumed to report data. Hence, the quality of the database is considered reasonably good, although data from individual patients may be incorrectly recorded due to clerical errors. Available data indicate that the number of burn victims seeking medical care has decreased by 16% during the past decade, whereas mortality has decreased by 70%! The demographic data is otherwise similar to what has previously been reported in the international literature.

  • Iterative controller optimization for nonlinear systems
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Control Engineering Practice. - 0967-0661. ; 11:9, s. 1079-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, a data-driven model-free control design method has been proposed in Hjalmarsson et al. (Proceedings of the Conference on Decision and Control, Orlando, FL, 1994, pp. 1735–1740; IEEE Control Systems Mag. 18 (1998) 26) for linear systems. It is based on the minimization of a control criterion with respect to the controller parameters using an iterative gradient technique. In this paper, we extend this method to the case where both the plant and the controller can be nonlinear. It is shown that an estimate of the gradient of the control criterion can be constructed using only signal-based information obtained from closed-loop experiments. The obtained estimate contains a bias which depends on the local nonlinearity of the noise description of the closed-loop system which can be expected to be small in many practical situations. As a side effect the linear model-free control design method is reobtained in a new way.

  • Delayed disclosure and disrupted communication during forensic investigation of child sexual abuse : a study of 47 corroborated cases.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 91:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To study factors of relevance for the understanding of disclosure of child sexual abuse.METHODS: Cases from a Swedish district court involving 47 children in which allegations of child sexual abuse had been corroborated by a confession from the defendant were studied.RESULTS: Delayed disclosure was related to a close relationship with the perpetrator and young age at the first experience of abuse. Disrupted communication during the police interview was related to less violent abuse.CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the importance of social factors in children's disclosure of sexual abuse.
