  • Considerations needed for analysing data from the Swedish Electrofishing RegiSter (SERS), with special reference to the RivFishTIME database of long-term riverine surveys
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Fauna Norvegica. - 1502-4873 .- 1891-5396. ; 42, s. 47-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The published database RivFishTIME (Comte et al. 2021, Global Ecology and Biogeography, doi: 10.1111/geb.13210) includes a large section of time-series data on fish abundance in Swedish rivers from the Swedish Electrofishing RegiSter, SERS. Knowledge about the limitations of the source data are important when extracting and analyzing data and with this brief note we provide some details that may be helpful for interpreting the Swedish time-series. The note highlights the importance of linking vital metadata to extracted focal data when constructing new databases, especially concerning time series data from monitoring programs conducted in non-randomly selected sites with human environmental impacts. Many of the SERS data come from rivers that have been affected by human impact, e.g. liming to mitigate environmental acidification and hydropower dams, since before monitoring was initiated. Data in SERS are also biased towards shallow salmonid habitats, due to the configuration of Swedish monitoring programs. Hence, data from many rivers are not representative of their fish biodiversity in general. This information is vital for appropriate interpretation of fish biodiversity trends. For RivFishTIME analyses considerations are important since Swedish data constitutes a large proportion of the database. We also provide background information about SERS and references to other Swedish databases containing complementary information. Finally, we provide contact information of the SERS database  curators, who can assist prospective analysts with data extraction from SERS.

  • Durability of shotcrete tunnel linings due to steel fibre corrosion in cracks
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Steel fibre reinforcement in homogenous, intact, wet-mix shotcrete show an excellent durability against corrosion. The alkaline concrete environment gives good protection but the relatively thin shotcrete layers may crack due to shrinkage and other deformations. Durability requirements today often demands service-life of more than 100 years, which is not realistic with a maintained load-bearing capacity. Special measures must therefore be taken in the design of shotcrete rock support, such as addition of extra amount of fibres if the shotcrete is cracked or increased structural thickness, which is here demonstrated with examples. Due to the complex situation with requirements on service-life, climate impact and cost-efficiency, the design of future shotcrete supports will be optimized based on life cycle and life cycle cost analyses.

  • The Role of Learning Support and Chat-Sessions in Guided Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents With Anxiety: A Factorial Design Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-0640. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Increased awareness of anxiety in adolescents emphasises the need for effective interventions. Internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) could be a resource-effective and evidence-based treatment option, but little is known about how to optimize ICBT or which factors boost outcomes. Recently, the role of knowledge in psychotherapy has received increased focus. Further, chat-sessions are of interest when trying to optimize ICBT for youths. This study aimed to evaluate the role of learning support and chat-sessions during ICBT for adolescent anxiety, using a factorial design. Method A total of 120 adolescents were randomised to one of four treatment groups, in a 2x2 design with two factors: with or without learning support and/or chat-sessions. Results Anxiety and depressive symptoms were reduced (Beck Anxiety Inventory- BAI; Cohensd=0.72; Beck Depression Inventory- BDI;d=0.97). There was a main effect of learning support on BAI (d=0.38), and learning support increased knowledge gain (d =0.42). There were no main effects or interactions related to the chat-sessions. Treatment effects were maintained at 6-months, but the added effect of learning support had by then vanished. Conclusion ICBT can be an effective alternative when treating adolescents with anxiety. Learning support could be of importance to enhance short-term treatment effects, and should be investigated further.

  • Assessment of oxygenation with polarized light spectroscopy enables new means for detecting vascular events in the skin
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Microvascular Research. - : ACADEMIC PRESS INC ELSEVIER SCIENCE. - 0026-2862 .- 1095-9319. ; 130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Impaired oxygenation in the skin may occur in disease states and after reconstructive surgery. We used tissue viability imaging (TiVi) to measure changes in oxygenation and deoxygenation of haemoglobin in an in vitro model and in the dermal microcirculation of healthy individuals. Materials and methods: Oxygenation was measured in human whole blood with different levels of oxygenation. In healthy subjects, changes in red blood cell concentration (C-RBC,(TiVi)), oxygenation (Delta C-OH,(TiVi)) and deoxygenation (Delta C-DOH,(TiVi)) of haemoglobin were measured during and after arterial and venous occlusion using TiVi and were compared with measurements from the enhanced perfusion and oxygen saturation system (EPOS). Results: During arterial occlusion, C-RBC,(TiVi) remained unchanged while Delta C-OH,(TiVi) decreased to -44.2 (10.4) AU (p = 0.04), as compared to baseline. After release, C-RBC,C-TiVi increased to 39.2 (18.8) AU (p < 0.001), Delta C-OH,C-TiVi increased to 38.5. During venous occlusion, C-RBC,C-TiVi increased to 28.9 (11.2) AU (p < 0.001), Delta C-OH,C-TiVi decreased to -52.2 (46.1) AU (p < 0.001) compared to baseline after 5 min of venous occlusion. There was a significant correlation between the TiVi Oxygen Mapper and EPOS, for arterial (r = 0.92, p < 0.001) and venous occlusion (r = 0.87, p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: This study shows that TiVi can measure trends in oxygenation and deoxygenation of haemoglobin during arterial and venous stasis in healthy individuals.

  • Understanding and assessing gamification in digital healthcare interventions for patients with cardiovascular disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. - : Oxford University Press. - 1474-5151 .- 1873-1953. ; 21:6, s. 630-638
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gamification is defined as the use of game design elements in contexts other than gaming to increase user engagement and experience. Gamification in cardiovascular care can contribute to positively change health behaviour with possible effects and benefits on physical health and mental well-being. Based on previous literature, in this article we describe: the conceptualization of gamification, the five gamification principles for gamified digital health programmes or applications, the six most common game elements used to impact health behaviour applied in gamified digital health interventions and finally scientifically validated instruments to use for assessment of gamification in terms of self-reported psychological outcomes.

  • G4-ligand-conjugated oligonucleotides mediate selective binding and stabilization of individual G4 DNA structures
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 146:10, s. 6926-6935
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • G-quadruplex (G4) DNA structures are prevalent secondary DNA structures implicated in fundamental cellular functions, such as replication and transcription. Furthermore, G4 structures are directly correlated to human diseases such as cancer and have been highlighted as promising therapeutic targets for their ability to regulate disease-causing genes, e.g., oncogenes. Small molecules that bind and stabilize these structures are thus valuable from a therapeutic perspective and helpful in studying the biological functions of the G4 structures. However, there are hundreds of thousands of G4 DNA motifs in the human genome, and a long-standing problem in the field is how to achieve specificity among these different G4 structures. Here, we developed a strategy to selectively target an individual G4 DNA structure. The strategy is based on a ligand that binds and stabilizes G4s without selectivity, conjugated to a guide oligonucleotide, that specifically directs the G4-Ligand-conjugated oligo (GL-O) to the single target G4 structure. By employing various biophysical and biochemical techniques, we show that the developed method enables the targeting of a unique, specific G4 structure without impacting other off-target G4 formations. Considering the vast amount of G4s in the human genome, this represents a promising strategy to study the presence and functions of individual G4s but may also hold potential as a future therapeutic modality.

  • Data quality and analysts’ role in AI enhanced C2
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium (ICCRTS) proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Command and Control (C2) raises questions about the interaction between operators on different levels on the one hand and AI-supported information systems on the other. For some purposes, the aggregation and analysis of large “big data”-sets creates potential for prediction and calculations of probabilities, while for other purposes human heuristics may be as promising depending on the situation. What has been more rarely discussed, is the very quality of data underpinning such calculations, and thus also operators’ awareness of the validity of predictions in relation to any specific situation. This is an urgent debate, considering the fact that full transparency may be impossible and underpinning data may be based on exercises, simulations, real-time data, or a mix thereof. Based on a fundamental classification of different kinds of uncertainties, this article discusses how data of different origins and quality can be managed and communicated to allow for operators to assess on what basis predictions are made. The article further suggests that looking at other fields of research may be useful for exploring unconventional ways of highlighting the existence and quality of different kinds of data of different origins in order to assess its predictive power. Finally, the article discusses how AI may change the role of analysts with regard to such issues.

  • Elevated levels of cortisol in hair precede acute myocardial infarction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : NATURE RESEARCH. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Long term stress exposure is typical for modern societies and might trigger different diseases. This case-control study reveals that persons who had suffered an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) had elevated cortisol concentrations in the month before the acute event. Middle-aged patients admitted to cardiology clinics with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (n=174) were compared to 3156 controls from a population-based cohort in southeast Sweden. The median Hair Cortisol Concentrations (HCC) for those who had suffered an AMI was 53.2 pg/mg compared to 22.2 pg/mg for the control group (p<0.001). In bivariate analysis, higher levels of HCC were strongly (OR=5.69) and statistically significantly associated with current AMI status. The discrimination of cases with AMI from controls remained statistically significant (OR=5.04) even after controlling for established cardiovascular risk factors in a multivariate analysis. Middle-aged persons with acute myocardial infarction had significantly elevated cortisol levels during the month before the cardiac event. This was evident for both men and women. The biomarker cortisol concentration was independently and statistically significantly related to AMI. Chronic stress seems to be a new promising risk factor for AMI.

  • Treatment-free remission after a second TKI discontinuation attempt in patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia re-treated with dasatinib - interim results from the DAstop2 trial.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Leukemia. - : Springer. - 0887-6924 .- 1476-5551.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) discontinuation in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has become part of routine care for patients with a sustained deep molecular response (DMR). Approximately 50% experience a molecular relapse upon TKI cessation. Most of them quickly regain DMR upon TKI resumption. Whether these patients can achieve a second treatment-free remission (TFR) remains unclear. DAstop2 (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03573596) is a prospective study including patients with a failed first TFR attempt re-treated with any TKI for ≥ one year. Upon entering the study, patients received the TKI dasatinib for additional two years. Patients with sustained DMR for ≥1 year qualified for a second TKI stop. Ninety-four patients were included between Oct 2017-Dec 2021. At the time of data analysis, 62 patients had attempted a 2nd stop. After a median follow-up of 27 months from 2nd stop, TFR rates were 61, 56 and 46% at 6, 12 and 24 months respectively. No progression to advanced stage disease was seen and 87% had re-achieved MR4 within a median of 3 months from TKI re-initiation. In summary, we show that a 2nd TFR attempt after dasatinib treatment is safe, feasible and TFR rates seem in the range of those reported in trials of a first TKI stop.

  • Switching from imatinib to nilotinib plus pegylated interferon-α2b in chronic phase CML failing to achieve deep molecular response : clinical and immunological effects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Annals of Hematology. - : Springer. - 0939-5555 .- 1432-0584. ; 102:6, s. 1395-1408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to improve molecular response for a discontinuation attempt in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients in chronic phase, who had not achieved at least a molecular response <0.01% BCR-ABL1IS (MR4.0) after at least 2 years of imatinib therapy, we prospectively evaluated whether they could attain MR4.0 after a switch to a combination of nilotinib and 9 months of pegylated interferon-α2b (PegIFN). The primary endpoint of confirmed MR4.0 at month 12 (a BCR-ABL1IS level ≤ 0.01% both at 12 and 15 months) was reached by 44% (7/16 patients, 95% confidence interval (CI): 23- 67%) of patients, with 81% (13/16 patients, 95% CI: 57-93%) of patients achieving an unconfirmed MR4.0. The scheduled combination was completed by 56% of the patients, with premature discontinuations, mainly due to mood disturbances after the introduction of PegIFN, questioning the feasibility of the combination of nilotinib and PegIFN for this patient population and treatment goal. A comprehensive clinical substudy program was implemented to characterize the impact of the treatment changes on the immunological profile.

  • New mobilities: A workshop on mobility beyond the car
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450368193 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • HCI research on mobility and transport has been dominated by a focus on the automobile. Yet urgent environmental concerns, along with new transport technologies, have created an opportunity for new ways of thinking about how we get from A to B. App-based services, innovations in electric motors, along with changing urban transport patterns, are transforming public transit. Technology is creating new collective transit services, as well as new ways for individuals to move, such as through rental, free-floating e-scooters, so called 'micro-mobility'. This workshop seeks to discuss and establish HCI perspectives on these new mobilities - engaging with and even inventing new modes of transport, fostering collaboration between scholars with varied topical interests around mobility. We seek to bring together a group of industry and academic collaborators, bringing new competences to HCI around the exciting opportunities of redesigning our contemporary mobilities.

  • Cost and statistical efficiency of posture assessment by inclinometry and observation, exemplified by paper mill work
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : PLOS. - 1932-6203. ; 18:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Postures at work are paramount in ergonomics. They can be determined using observation and inclinometry in a variety of measurement scenarios that may differ both in costs associated with collecting and processing data, and in efficiency, i.e. the precision of the eventual outcome. The trade-off between cost and efficiency has rarely been addressed in research despite the obvious interest of obtaining precise data at low costs. Median trunk and upper arm inclination were determined for full shifts in 28 paper mill workers using both observation and inclinometry. Costs were estimated using comprehensive cost equations; and efficiency, i.e. the inverted standard deviation of the group mean, was assessed on basis of exposure variance components. Cost and efficiency were estimated in simulations of six sampling scenarios: two for inclinometry (sampling from one or three shifts) and four for observation (one or three observers rating one or three shifts). Each of the six scenarios was evaluated for 1 through 50 workers. Cost-efficiency relationships between the scenarios were intricate. As an example, inclinometry was always more cost-efficient than observation for trunk inclination, except for observation strategies involving only few workers; while for arm inclination, observation by three observers of one shift per worker outperformed inclinometry on three shifts up to a budget of €20000, after which inclinometry prevailed. At a budget of €10000, the best sampling scenario for arm inclination was 2.5 times more efficient than the worst. Arm inclination could be determined with better cost-efficiency than trunk inclination. Our study illustrates that the cost-efficiency of different posture measurement strategies can be assessed and compared using easily accessible diagrams. While the numeric examples in our study are specific to the investigated occupation, exposure variables, and sampling logistics, we believe that inclinometry will, in general, outperform observation. In any specific case, we recommend a thorough analysis, using the comparison procedure proposed in the present study, of feasible strategies for obtaining data, in order to arrive at an informed decision support.

  • Active Ecological Restoration of Cold-Water Corals: Techniques, Challenges, Costs and Future Directions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-7745. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cold-water coral (CWC) habitats dwell on continental shelves, slopes, seamounts, and ridge systems around the world’s oceans from 50 to 4000 m depth, providing heterogeneous habitats which support a myriad of associated fauna. These highly diverse ecosystems are threatened by human stressors such as fishing activities, gas and oil exploitation, and climate change. Since their life-history traits such as long lifespan and slow growth rates make CWCs very vulnerable to potential threats, it is a foremost challenge to explore the viability of restoration actions to enhance and speed up their recovery. In contrast to terrestrial and shallow-water marine ecosystems, ecological restoration in deep marine environments has received minimal attention. This review, by means of a systematic literature search, aims to identify CWC restoration challenges, assess the most suitable techniques to restore them, and discuss future perspectives. Outcomes from the few restoration actions performed to date on CWCs, which have lasted between 1 to 4 years, provide evidence of the feasibility of coral transplantation and artificial reef deployments. Scientific efforts should focus on testing novel and creative restoration techniques, especially to scale up to the spatial and temporal scales of impacts. There is still a general lack of knowledge about the biological, ecological and habitat characteristics of CWC species exploration of which would aid the development of effective restoration measures. To ensure the long-term viability and success of any restoration action it is essential to include holistic and long-term monitoring programs, and to ideally combine active restoration with natural spontaneous regeneration (i.e., passive restoration) strategies such as the implementation of deep-sea marine protected areas (MPAs). We conclude that a combination of passive and active restoration approaches with involvement of local society would be the best optimal option to achieve and ensure CWC restoration success.

  • Potential sources of contamination on textiles and hard surfaces identified as high-touch sites near the patient environment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science. - 1932-6203. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hospital environment represents an important mediator for the transmission of healthcare-associated infections through direct and indirect hand contact with hard surfaces and textiles. In this study, bacteria on high-touch sites, including textiles and hard surfaces in two care wards in Sweden, were identified using microbiological culture methods and 16S rDNA sequencing. During a cross-sectional study, 176 high-touch hard surfaces and textiles were identified and further analysed using microbiological culture for quantification of total aerobic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile and Enterobacteriacae. The bacterial population structures were further analysed in 26 samples using 16S rDNA sequencing. The study showed a higher frequency of unique direct hand-textile contacts (36 per hour), compared to hard surfaces (2.2 per hour). Hard surfaces met the recommended standard of ≤ 5 CFU/cm2 for aerobic bacteria and ≤ 1 CFU/cm2 for S. aureus (53% and 35%, respectively) to a higher extent compared to textiles (19% and 30%, respectively) (P = 0.0488). The number of bacterial genera was higher on textiles than on the hard surfaces. Staphylococcus (30.4%) and Corynebacterium (10.9%) were the most representative genera for textiles and Streptococcus (13.3%) for hard surfaces. The fact that a big percentage of the textiles did not fulfil the criteria for cleanliness, combined with the higher bacterial diversity, compared to hard surfaces, are indicators that textiles were bacterial reservoirs and potential risk vectors for bacterial transmission. However, since most of the bacteria found in the study belonged to the normal flora, it was not possible to draw conclusions of textiles and hard surfaces as sources of healthcare associated infections. 2023 Nygren et al.

  • Effects of array shape and disk ellipticity in dipolar-coupled magnetic metamaterials
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 104:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional lattices of dipolar-coupled thin film ferromagnetic nanodisks give rise to emergent superferromagnetic (SFM) order when the spacing between dots becomes sufficiently small. In this paper, we define micron-sized arrays of permalloy nanodisks arranged on a hexagonal lattice. The arrays were shaped as hexagons, squares, and rectangles to investigate finite-size effects in the SFM domain structure for such arrays. The resulting domain patterns were examined using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy. At room temperature, we find these SFM metamaterials to be below their blocking temperature. Distinct differences were found in the magnetic switching characteristics of horizontally and vertically oriented rectangular arrays. The results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.
