  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

  • Genetic association study of QT interval highlights role for calcium signaling pathways in myocardial repolarization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 46:8, s. 826-836
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The QT interval, an electrocardiographic measure reflecting myocardial repolarization, is a heritable trait. QT prolongation is a risk factor for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) and could indicate the presence of the potentially lethal mendelian long-QT syndrome (LQTS). Using a genome-wide association and replication study in up to 100,000 individuals, we identified 35 common variant loci associated with QT interval that collectively explain ∼ 8-10% of QT-interval variation and highlight the importance of calcium regulation in myocardial repolarization. Rare variant analysis of 6 new QT interval-associated loci in 298 unrelated probands with LQTS identified coding variants not found in controls but of uncertain causality and therefore requiring validation. Several newly identified loci encode proteins that physically interact with other recognized repolarization proteins. Our integration of common variant association, expression and orthogonal protein-protein interaction screens provides new insights into cardiac electrophysiology and identifies new candidate genes for ventricular arrhythmias, LQTS and SCD. © 2014 Nature America, Inc.

  • SNEWS 2.0 : a next-generation supernova early warning system for multi-messenger astronomy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 23:3
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The next core-collapse supernova in the Milky Way or its satellites will represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to obtain detailed information about the explosion of a star and provide significant scientific insight for a variety of fields because of the extreme conditions found within. Supernovae in our galaxy are not only rare on a human timescale but also happen at unscheduled times, so it is crucial to be ready and use all available instruments to capture all possible information from the event. The first indication of a potential stellar explosion will be the arrival of a bright burst of neutrinos. Its observation by multiple detectors worldwide can provide an early warning for the subsequent electromagnetic fireworks, as well as signal to other detectors with significant backgrounds so they can store their recent data. The supernova early warning system (SNEWS) has been operating as a simple coincidence between neutrino experiments in automated mode since 2005. In the current era of multi-messenger astronomy there are new opportunities for SNEWS to optimize sensitivity to science from the next galactic supernova beyond the simple early alert. This document is the product of a workshop in June 2019 towards design of SNEWS 2.0, an upgraded SNEWS with enhanced capabilities exploiting the unique advantages of prompt neutrino detection to maximize the science gained from such a valuable event.

  • An extremely metal-poor star complex in the reionization era : Approaching Population III stars with JWST
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present JWST/Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of a lensed Population III candidate stellar complex (dubbed Lensed And Pristine 1, LAP1), with a lensing-corrected stellar mass of ≲104 M⊙ and an absolute luminosity of MUV > −11.2 (mUV > 35.6), confirmed at redshift 6.639 ± 0.004. The system is strongly amplified (μ ≳ 100) by straddling a critical line of the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416. Although the stellar continuum is currently not detected in the Hubble and JWST/Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) imaging, arclet-like shapes of Lyman and Balmer lines, Lyα, Hγ, Hβ and Hα are detected with NIRSpec IFS with signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) of approximately 5 − 13 and large equivalent widths (> 300 − 2000 Å), along with a remarkably weak [O III]λλ4959, 5007 at S/N ≃ 4. LAP1 shows a large ionizing photon production efficiency, log(ξion[erg Hz−1]) > 26. From the metallicity indexes R23 = ([O III] + [O II])/Hβ ≲ 0.74 and R3 = ([O III]/Hβ) = 0.55 ± 0.14, we derive an oxygen abundance of 12 + log(O/H)≲6.3. Intriguingly, the Hα emission is also measured in mirrored subcomponents where no [O III] is detected, providing even more stringent upper limits on the metallicity if in situ star formation is ongoing in this region (12 + log(O/H) < 6). The formal stellar mass limit of the subcomponents would correspond to ∼103 M⊙ or MUV fainter than −10. Alternatively, this metal-free, pure line-emitting region could be the first case of a fluorescing H I gas region induced by transverse escaping ionizing radiation from a nearby star complex. The presence of large equivalent-width hydrogen lines and the deficiency of metal lines in such a small region make LAP1 the most metal-poor star-forming region currently known in the reionization era and a promising site that may host isolated, pristine stars.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - 1089-7674 .- 1070-664X. ; 18, s. 056121-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detailed experiment-theory comparison reveals that linear ideal MHD theory is in quantitative agreement with external magnetic and internal soft x-ray measurements of the plasma response to externally applied non-axisymmetric fields over a broad range of beta and rotation. This result represents a significant step toward the goal of advancing the understanding of three-dimensional tokamak equilibria. Both the magnetic and soft x-ray measurements show the driven plasma perturbation increases linearly with the applied perturbation, suggesting the relevance of linear plasma response models. The magnetic and soft x-ray measurements are made at multiple toroidal and poloidal locations, allowing well resolved measurements of the global structure. The comparison also highlights the need to include kinetic effects in the MHD model once beta exceeds 80% of the kink mode limit without a conducting wall. Two distinct types of response fields are identified by the linear ideal MHD model: one that consists of localized currents at the rational surfaces that cancel the applied resonant field and another that is excited by the components of the external field that couple to the kink mode. Numerical simulations show these two fields have similar amplitudes in ITER-shaped DIII-D discharges where n = 3 fields are used to suppress edge localized modes.

  • Resistive wall mode control code maturity: progress and specific examples
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6587 .- 0741-3335. ; 52:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two issues of the resistive wall mode (RWM) control code maturity are addressed: the inclusion of advanced mode damping physics beyond the ideal MHD description, and the possibility of taking into account the influence of 3D features of the conducting structures on the mode stability and control. Examples of formulations and computational results are given, using the MARS-F/K codes and the CarMa code. The MARS-K calculations for a DIII-D plasma shows that the fast ion contributions, which can give additional drift kinetic stabilization in the perturbative approach, also drive an extra unstable branch of mode in the self-consistent kinetic modelling. The CarMa modelling for the ITER steady state advanced plasmas shows about 20% reduction in the RWM growth rate by the volumetric blanket modules. The multi-mode analysis predicts a weak interaction between the n = 0 and the n = 1 RWMs, due to the 3D ITER walls. The CarMa code is also successfully applied to model the realistic feedback experiments in RFX.

  • Control of the resistive wall mode with internal coils in the DIII-D tokamak
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 45:12, s. 1715-1731
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internal coils, 'I-Coils', were installed inside the vacuum vessel of the DIII-D device to generate non-axisymmetric magnetic fields to act directly on the plasma. These fields are predicted to stabilize the resistive wall mode (RWM) branch of the long-wavelength external kink mode with plasma beta close to the ideal wall limit. Feedback using these I-Coils was found to be more effective as compared to using external coils located outside the vacuum vessel. Locating the coils inside the vessel allows for a faster response and the coil geometry also allows for better coupling to the helical mode structure. Initial results were reported previously (Strait E.J. et al 2004 Phys. Plasmas 11 2505). This paper reports on results from extended feedback stabilization operations, achieving plasma parameters up to the regime of Cβ ≈ 1.0 and open loop growth rates of γopenτw ≳ 25 where the RWM was predicted to be unstable with only the 'rotational viscous stabilization mechanism'. Here Cβ ≈ (β - βno-wall.limit)/(βideal.wall.limit - βno-wall.limit) is a measure of the beta relative to the stability limits without a wall and with a perfectly conducting wall, and τw is the resistive flux penetration time of the wall. These feedback experimental results clarified the processes of dynamic error field correction and direct RWM stabilization, both of which took place simultaneously during RWM feedback stabilization operation. MARS-F modelling provides a critical rotation velocity in reasonable agreement with the experiment and predicts that the growth rate increases rapidly as rotation decreases below the critical. The MARS-F code also predicted that for successful RWM magnetic feedback, the characteristic time of the power supply should be limited to a fraction of the growth time of the targeted RWM. The possibility of further improvements in the presently achievable range of operation of feedback gain values is also discussed.

  • Physics of Plasmas Modeling of Feedback and Rotation Stabilization of the Resistive Wall Mode in Tokamaks
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. ; 11, s. 2497-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Steady-state operation of the advanced tokamak reactor relies on maintaining plasma stability with respect to the resistive wall mode ~RWM!. Active magnetic feedback and plasma rotation are the two methods proposed and demonstrated for this purpose. A comprehensive modeling effort including both magnetic feedback and plasma rotation is needed for understanding the physical mechanisms of the stabilization and to project to future devices. For plasma with low rotation, a complete solution for the feedback issue is obtained by assuming the plasma obeys ideal magnetohydrodynamics ~MHDs! and utilizing a normal mode approach ~NMA! @M. S. Chu et al., Nucl. Fusion 43, 441 ~2003!#. It is found that poloidal sensors are more effective than radial sensors and coils inside of the vacuum vessel more effective than outside. For plasmas with non-negligible rotation, a comprehensive linear nonideal MHD code, the MARS-F has been found to be suitable. MARS-F @Y. Q. Liu et al., Phys. Plasmas 7, 3681 ~2000!# has been benchmarked in the ideal MHD limit against the NMA. The effect of rotation stabilization of the plasma depends on the plasma dissipation model. Broad qualitative features of the experiment are reproduced. Rotation reduces the feedback gain required for RWM stabilization. Reduction is significant when rotation is near the critical rotation speed needed for stabilization. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ~ITER! @R. Aymar et al., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 44, 519 ~2002!# ~scenario IV for advanced tokamak operation! may be feedback stabilized with babove the no wall limit and up to an increment of ;50% towards the ideal limit. Rotation further improves the stability.

  • Response of a resistive and rotating tokamak to external magnetic perturbations below the Alfven frequency
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 51, s. 073036-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by the recent experimental observation that plasma stability can be improved by external magnetic perturbations, the general problem of plasma response to external magnetic perturbations is investigated. Different (vacuum, ideal and resistive) plasma response models are considered and compared. Plasma response, in experiments where stabilization was achieved, is obtained through computation using the MARS-F code, with a plasma model that includes both plasma resistivity and rotation. The resultant magnetic field line stochasticity is much reduced from that obtained formerly using the vacuum plasma model. This reduced stochasticity is more consistent with the favourable experimental observation of enhanced stability. Examples are given for the response of an ITER plasma to perturbations generated by the correction coils; and the response of a plasma to external coils (antenna) up to the Alfvén frequency.

  • The Gas and Stellar Content of a Metal-poor Galaxy at z = 8.496 as Revealed by JWST and ALMA
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 944:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a joint analysis of the galaxy S04590 at z = 8.496 based on NIRSpec, NIRCam, and NIRISS observations obtained as part of the Early Release Observations program of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the far-infrared [C ii] 158 μm emission line detected by dedicated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We determine the physical properties of S04590 from modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and through the redshifted optical nebular emission lines detected with JWST/NIRSpec. The best-fit SED model reveals a low-mass (M ⋆ = 107.2-108 M ⊙) galaxy with a low oxygen abundance of 12 + log ( O / H ) = 7.16 − 0.12 + 0.10 derived from the strong nebular and auroral emission lines. Assuming that [C ii] effectively traces the interstellar medium, we estimate the total gas mass of the galaxy to be M gas = (8.0 ± 4.0) × 108 M ⊙ based on the luminosity and spatial extent of [C ii]. This yields an exceptionally high gas fraction, f gas = M gas/(M gas + M ⋆) ≳ 90%, though one still consistent with the range expected for low metallicity. We further derive the metal mass of the galaxy based on the gas mass and gas-phase metallicity, which we find to be consistent with the expected metal production from Type II supernovae. Finally, we make the first constraints on the dust-to-gas (DTG) and dust-to-metal (DTM) ratios of galaxies in the epoch of reionization at z ≳ 6, showing overall low mass ratios of logDTG < −3.8 and logDTM < −0.5, though they are consistent with established scaling relations and in particular with those of the local metal-poor galaxy I Zwicky 18. Our analysis highlights the synergy between ALMA and JWST in characterizing the gas, metal, and stellar content of the first generation of galaxies.

  • Scaling of the Plasma Rotation Needed for Stabilizing the n = 1 Resistive Wall Mode (Ideal Kink) in the DIII D Tokamak
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 44, s. 1197-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments in the DIII-D tokamak show that the n = 1 ideal kink can be stabilized by a resistive wall if the plasma is rotating fast enough. A database of the onset of the n = 1 resistive wall mode as a function of the equilibrium toroidal magnetic field, the plasma density and the toroidal rotation has been assembled for plasmas with beta between the theoretically predicted no wall and ideal wall stability limits. The critical rotation frequency is found to scale as the inverse of the Alfvén time with ? ?A 0.02 (evaluated at the q = 2 surface at ? 0.6) or ? ?S 0.7, where ?S is the sound time. The dependence of ? ? A or ? ?S on ?N/?N,no wall from 1?2 is weak and suggests the plasmas are in the 'intermediate dissipation' regime.

  • Off-axis Fishbone-like Instability and Excitation of Resistive Wall Mode in JT-60U and DIII-D
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - 1089-7674 .- 1070-664X. ; 18, s. 056121-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An energetic-particle (EP)-driven “off-axis-fishbone-like mode (OFM)” often triggers a resistive wall mode (RWM) in JT-60U and DIII-D devices, preventing long-duration high-βN discharges. In these experiments, the EPs are energetic ions (70–85 keV) injected by neutral beams to produce high-pressure plasmas. EP-driven bursting events reduce the EP density and the plasma rotation simultaneously. These changes are significant in high-βN low-rotation plasmas, where the RWM stability is predicted to be strongly influenced by the EP precession drift resonance and by the plasma rotation near the q = 2 surface (kinetic effects). Analysis of these effects on stability with a self-consistent perturbation to the mode structure using the MARS-K code showed that the impact of EP losses and rotation drop is sufficient to destabilize the RWM in low-rotation plasmas, when the plasma rotation normalized by Alfvén frequency is only a few tenths of a percent near the q = 2 surface. The OFM characteristics are very similar in JT-60U and DIII-D, including nonlinear mode evolution. The modes grow initially like a classical fishbone, and then the mode structure becomes strongly distorted. The dynamic response of the OFM to an applied n = 1 external field indicates that the mode retains its external kink character. These comparative studies suggest that an energetic particle-driven “off-axis-fishbone-like mode” is a new EP-driven branch of the external kink mode in wall-stabilized plasmas, analogous to the relationship of the classical fishbone branch to the internal kink mode.

  • JWST and ALMA Multiple-line Study in and around a Galaxy at z =8.496: Optical to Far-Infrared Line Ratios and the Onset of an Outflow Promoting Ionizing Photon Escape
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 964:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) deep spectroscopy for a lensed galaxy at z(spec) = 8.496 with log(M-star/M-circle dot) similar to 7.8 whose optical nebular lines and stellar continuum are detected by JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam Early Release Observations in the field of SMACS J0723.3-7327. Our ALMA spectrum shows [O III] 88 mu m and [C II] 158 mu m line detections at 4.0 sigma and 4.5 sigma, respectively. The redshift and position of the [O III] line coincide with those of the JWST source, while the [C II] line is blueshifted by 90 km s(-1) with a spatial offset of 0.'' 5 (approximate to 0.5 kpc in the source plane) from the centroid of the JWST source. The NIRCam F444W image, including [O III] lambda 5007 and H beta line emission, spatially extends beyond the stellar components by a factor of >8. This indicates that the z = 8.5 galaxy has already experienced strong outflows as traced by extended [O III] lambda 5007 and offset [C II] emission, which would promote ionizing photon escape and facilitate reionization. With careful slit-loss corrections and the removal of emission spatially outside the galaxy, we evaluate the [O III] 88 mu m/lambda 5007 line ratio, and derive the electron density n (e) by photoionization modeling to be 220(-130)(+230) cm(-3), which is comparable with those of z similar to 2-3 galaxies. We estimate an [O III] 88 mu m/[C II] 158 mu m line ratio in the galaxy of >4, as high as those of known z similar to 6-9 galaxies. This high [O III] 88 mu m/[C II] 158 mu m line ratio is generally explained by the high n(e) as well as the low metallicity (Z(gas)/Z(circle dot)=0.04(-0.02)(+0.02)), high ionization parameter (log U > -2.27), and low carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratio (log(C/O) = [-0.52: -0.24]) obtained from the JWST/NIRSpec data; further [C II] follow-up observations will constrain the covering fraction of photodissociation regions.

  • Requirements for active resistive wall mode (RWM) feedback control
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6587 .- 0741-3335. ; 52:10, s. 104004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The requirements for active resistive wall mode (RWM) feedback control have been systematically investigated and established using highly reproducible current-driven RWMs in ohmic discharges in DIII-D. The unambiguous evaluation of active RWM feedback control was not possible in previous RWM studies primarily due to the variability of the onset of the pressure-driven RWMs; the stability of the pressure-driven RWM is thought to be sensitive to various passive stabilization mechanisms. Both feedback control specifications and physics requirements for RWM stabilization have been clarified using the current-driven RWMs in ohmic discharges, when little or no passive stabilization effects are present. The use of derivative gain on top of proportional gain is found to be advantageous. An effective feedback control system should be equipped with a power supply with bandwidth greater than the RWM growth rate. It is beneficial to apply a feedback field that is toroidally phase-shifted from the measured RWM phase in the same direction as the plasma current. The efficacy of the RWM feedback control will ultimately be determined by the plasma fluctuations on internal diagnostics, as well as on external magnetics. The proximity of the feedback coils to the plasma appears to be an important factor in determining the effectiveness of the RWM feedback coils. It is desirable that an RWM feedback control system simultaneously handles error field correction at a low frequency, along with direct RWM feedback at a high frequency. There is an indication of the influence of a second least stable RWM, which had been theoretically predicted but never identified in experiments. A preliminary investigation based on active MHD spectroscopic measurement showed a strong plasma response around 400 Hz where the typical plasma response associated with the first least stable RWM was expected to be negligible. Present active feedback control requirements are based on a single mode assumption, so the investigation of the second least stable RWM is of high interest.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-frequency noise measured by magnetic sensors, at levels above the typical frequency of resistive wall modes, is analyzed across a range of present tokamak devices including DIII-D, JET, MAST, ASDEX Upgrade, JT-60U, and NSTX. A high-pass filter enables identification of the noise component with Gaussian-like statistics that shares certain common characteristics in all devices considered. A conservative prediction is made for ITER plasma operation of the high-frequency noise component of the sensor signals, to be used for resistive wall mode feedback stabilization, based on the multimachine database. The predicted root-mean-square n = 1 (n is the toroidal mode number) noise level is 10(4) to 10(5) G/s for the voltage signal, and 0.1 to 1 G for the perturbed magnetic field signal. The lower cutoff frequency of the Gaussian pickup noise scales linearly with the sampling frequency, with a scaling coefficient of about 0.1. These basic noise characteristics should be useful for the modeling-based design of the feedback control system for the resistive wall mode in ITER.

  • The Impact of 3-D Fields on Tearing Mode Stability of H-modes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 51, s. 073016-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New processes have been discovered in the interaction of 3D fields with tearing mode stability at low torque and modest β on DIII-D and NSTX. These are thought to arise from the plasma response at the tearing resonant surface, which theoretically is expected to depend strongly on plasma rotation and underlying intrinsic tearing stability. This leads to sensitivities additional to those previously identified at low density where the plasma rotation is more readily stopped, or at high βN where ideal MHD responses amplify the fields (where βN is the plasma β divided by the ratio of plasma current to minor radius multiplied by toroidal field). It is found that the threshold size for 3D fields to induce modes tends to zero as the natural tearing βN limit is approached. 3D field sensitivity is further enhanced at low rotation, with magnetic probing detecting an increased response to applied fields in such regimes. Modelling with the MARS-F code confirms the interpretation with the usual plasma screening response breaking down in low rotation plasmas and a tearing response developing, opening the door to additional sensitivities to β and the current profile. Typical field thresholds to induce modes in torque-free βN ~ 1.5 H-modes are well below those in ohmic plasmas or plasmas near the ideal βN limit. The strong interaction with the tearing mode βN limit is identified through rotation shear, which is decreased by the 3D field, leading to decreased tearing stability. Thus both locked and rotating mode field thresholds can be considered in terms of a torque balance, with sufficient braking leading to destabilization of a mode. On this basis new measurements of the principal parameter scalings for error field threshold have been obtained in torque-free H-modes leading to new predictions for error field sensitivity in ITER. The scalings have similar exponents to ohmic plasmas, but with seven times lower threshold at the ITER baseline βN value of 1.8, and a linear dependence on proximity to the tearing mode βN limit (~2.2 at zero torque). This reinforces the need to optimize error field correction strategies in ITER, and implement sources to drive plasma rotation.

    • We present results of [C ii] 158 μm emission line observations, and report the spectroscopic redshift confirmation of a strongly lensed (μ ∼ 20) star-forming galaxy, MACS0308-zD1 at z = 6.2078 ± 0.0002. The [C ii] emission line is detected with a signal-to-noise ratio >6 within the rest-frame UV-bright clump of the lensed galaxy (zD1.1) and exhibits multiple velocity components; the narrow [C ii] has a velocity full width half maximum (FWHM) of 110 ± 20 km s−1, while broader [C ii] is seen with an FWHM of 230 ± 50 km s−1. The broader [C ii] component is blueshifted (−80 ± 20 km s−1) with respect to the narrow [C ii] component, and has a morphology that extends beyond the UV-bright clump. We find that, while the narrow [C ii] emission is most likely associated with zD1.1, the broader component is possibly associated with a physically distinct gas component from zD1.1 (e.g., outflowing or inflowing gas). Based on the nondetection of λ158μm dust continuum, we find that MACS0308-zD1's star formation activity occurs in a dust-free environment indicated by a strong upper limit of infrared luminosity ≲9 × 108L⊙. Targeting this strongly lensed faint galaxy for follow-up Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and JWST observations will be crucial to characterize the details of typical galaxy growth in the early Universe.

  • JWST Reveals a Possible z similar to 11 Galaxy Merger in Triply Lensed MACS0647-JD
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 949:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MACS0647-JD is a triply lensed z similar to 11 galaxy originally discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. The three lensed images are magnified by factors of similar to 8, 5, and 2 to AB mag 25.1, 25.6, and 26.6 at 3.5 mu m. The brightest is over a magnitude brighter than other galaxies recently discovered at similar redshifts z > 10 with JWST. Here, we report new JWST imaging that clearly resolves MACS0647-JD as having two components that are either merging galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. The brighter larger component "A" is intrinsically very blue (ss similar to-2.6 +/- 0.1), likely due to very recent star formation and no dust, and is spatially extended with an effective radius similar to 70 +/- 24 pc. The smaller component "B" (r similar to 20-+ 58 pc) appears redder (ss similar to-2 +/- 0.2), likely because it is older (100-200 Myr) with mild dust extinction (AV similar to 0.1 mag). With an estimated stellar mass ratio of roughly 2:1 and physical projected separation similar to 400 pc, we may be witnessing a galaxy merger 430 million years after the Big Bang. We identify galaxies with similar colors in a high-redshift simulation, finding their star formation histories to be dissimilar, which is also suggested by the spectral energy distribution fitting, suggesting they formed further apart. We also identify a candidate companion galaxy "C" similar to 3 kpc away, likely destined to merge with A and B. Upcoming JWST Near Infrared Spectrograph observations planned for 2023 January will deliver spectroscopic redshifts and more physical properties for these tiny magnified distant galaxies observed in the early universe.

  • Arterial stiffness and influences of the metabolic syndrome: A cross-countries study.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1484 .- 0021-9150. ; 233:2, s. 654-660
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Specific clusters of metabolic syndrome (MetS) components impact differentially on arterial stiffness, indexed as pulse wave velocity (PWV). Of note, in several population-based studies participating in the MARE (Metabolic syndrome and Arteries REsearch) Consortium the occurrence of specific clusters of MetS differed markedly across Europe and the US. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether specific clusters of MetS are consistently associated with stiffer arteries in different populations. We studied 20,570 subjects from 9 cohorts representing 8 different European countries and the US participating in the MARE Consortium. MetS was defined in accordance with NCEP ATPIII criteria as the simultaneous alteration in ≥3 of the 5 components: abdominal obesity (W), high triglycerides (T), low HDL cholesterol (H), elevated blood pressure (B), and elevated fasting glucose (G). PWV measured in each cohort was "normalized" to account for different acquisition methods. MetS had an overall prevalence of 24.2% (4985 subjects). MetS accelerated the age-associated increase in PWV levels at any age, and similarly in men and women. MetS clusters TBW, GBW, and GTBW are consistently associated with significantly stiffer arteries to an extent similar or greater than observed in subjects with alteration in all the five MetS components - even after controlling for age, sex, smoking, cholesterol levels, and diabetes mellitus - in all the MARE cohorts. In conclusion, different component clusters of MetS showed varying associations with arterial stiffness (PWV).

  • A highly magnified star at redshift 6.2
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 603:7903, s. 815-818
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Galaxy clusters magnify background objects through strong gravitational lensing. Typical magnifications for lensed galaxies are factors of a few but can also be as high as tens or hundreds, stretching galaxies into giant arcs(1,2). Individual stars can attain even higher magnifications given fortuitous alignment with the lensing cluster. Recently, several individual stars at redshifts between approximately 1 and 1.5 have been discovered, magnified by factors of thousands, temporarily boosted by microlensing(3-6). Here we report observations of a more distant and persistent magnified star at a redshift of 6.2 +/- 0.1, 900 million years after the Big Bang. This star is magnified by a factor of thousands by the foreground galaxy cluster lens WHL0137-08 (redshift 0.566), as estimated by four independent lens models. Unlike previous lensed stars, the magnification and observed brightness (AB magnitude, 27.2) have remained roughly constant over 3.5 years of imaging and follow-up. The delensed absolute UV magnitude, -10 +/- 2, is consistent with a star of mass greater than 50 times the mass of the Sun. Confirmation and spectral classification are forthcoming from approved observations with the James Webb Space Telescope.

  • JWST Imaging of Earendel, the Extremely Magnified Star at Redshift z=6.2
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 940
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gravitationally lensed star WHL 0137-LS, nicknamed Earendel, was identified with a photometric redshift z (phot) = 6.2 +/- 0.1 based on images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Camera images of Earendel in eight filters spanning 0.8-5.0 mu m. In these higher-resolution images, Earendel remains a single unresolved point source on the lensing critical curve, increasing the lower limit on the lensing magnification to mu > 4000 and restricting the source plane radius further to r < 0.02 pc, or similar to 4000 au. These new observations strengthen the conclusion that Earendel is best explained by an individual star or multiple star system and support the previous photometric redshift estimate. Fitting grids of stellar spectra to our photometry yields a stellar temperature of T (eff) similar to 13,000-16,000 K, assuming the light is dominated by a single star. The delensed bolometric luminosity in this case ranges from log(L)=5.8 L-theta, which is in the range where one expects luminous blue variable stars. Follow-up observations, including JWST NIRSpec scheduled for late 2022, are needed to further unravel the nature of this object, which presents a unique opportunity to study massive stars in the first billion years of the universe.
