  • Morphological, vocal and genetic divergence in the Cettia acanthizoides complex (Aves: Cettiidae)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0024-4082 .- 1096-3642. ; 149:3, s. 437-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We used morphological, vocal and molecular (one mitochondrial and two nuclear loci) data to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of the taxa acanthizoides, concolor, and brunnescens in the Cettia acanthizoides (J. Verreaux, 1871) complex. We conclude that all three are valid taxa, and that acanthizoides of China and concolor of Taiwan are best treated as conspecific, whereas brunnescens of the Himalayas is better considered as a separate species. The degree of morphological, vocal, and genetic differentiation is variably congruent among all taxa; the recently separated acanthizoides and concolor differ slightly in plumage and structure but are indistinguishable in vocalizations, whereas the earlier diverged brunnescens and acanthizoides/concolor differ only slightly more in morphology but to a much greater degree in vocalizations. We stress the essential nature of taxonomic revisions as a prerequisite for the biodiversity estimates required for conservation planning.

  • Information fusion for decision support in manufacturing : studies from the defense sector
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. - : Springer. - 0268-3768 .- 1433-3015. ; 35:9-10, s. 908-915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information fusion, the synergistic combination of information from multiple sources, is an established research area within the defense sector. In manufacturing however, it is less well-established, with the exception of sensor/data fusion for automatic decision making. The paper briefly discusses some military specific models and methods for information fusion; analogies with manufacturing as well as a more generalized terminology are presented. “Manufacturing” is an application scenario within a Swedish information fusion research program that studies information fusion from databases, sensors and simulations with (currently) a focus on support for human decision making. An area of particular interest is that of advanced applications of virtual manufacturing such as synthetic environments, a form of hardware in the loop simulation that can deliver services such as service and maintenance at remote locations. In this area, the manufacturing industry can benefit from ongoing work in the defense sector related to verification, validation and accreditation of simulation models.

  • Small recoverable payload for deployable sounding rocket experiments
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 19th Esa Symposium on European Rocket and Balloon Programmes and Related Research. - 9789292212353 ; , s. 281-284
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a design of a small payload for deployment from sounding rockets. The payload is intended for measurements in the ionosphere and the acquired data is stored onboard. For a secure recovery of the data and possible re-use of the payload, an inflatable structure is deployed during the payload descent. This reduces the payload speed and protects it from ground impact. On the ground, a localization system is activated, sending the payload position via a satellite link, and providing a radio beacon signal. The proposed small payload will allow high time resolution multipoint measurements in the ionosphere with small separation distances, thus allowing to address a number of unresolved questions in the field.

  • Species delimitation based on multiple criteria : the Spotted Bush Warbler Bradypterus thoracicus complex (Aves : Megaluridae)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0024-4082 .- 1096-3642. ; 154:2, s. 291-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the importance of using multiple criteria in species delimitations, whatever the conceptual base for species delimitation. We do this by studying plumage, biometrics, egg coloration, song, mitochondrial DNA and habitat/altitudinal distribution in the Spotted Bush Warbler Bradypterus thoracicus (Blyth) complex, and by conducting playback experiments. Taxa that we suggest are best treated as separate species [B. thoracicus (Blyth), B. davidi (La Touche) and B. kashmirensis (Sushkin)] differ in most or all of these aspects, particularly in song and mitochondrial DNA, while those that we treat as subspecies (suschkini) or synonyms (przevalskii) differ slightly and only in morphology.

  • Lack of sex differences in the IGF-IGFBP response to ultra endurance exercise.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. - : Wiley. - 0905-7188 .- 1600-0838. ; 18:6, s. 706-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-IGF binding proteins (BP) and the pituitary-gonadal axes were investigated during ultra endurance exercise in 16 endurance-trained athletes (seven women). Median duration of the race was 6.3 days. Although food and drink were ad libitum, energy balance was negative. Blood samples were drawn before (PRE), at the end of (END) and 24 h after (POST24h) the race. Serum concentrations of total IGF-I (t-IGF-I) and free IGF-I (f-IGF-I) decreased by 33 (SD 38)% and 54 (19)%, respectively. The decrease in t-IGF-I appeared to be associated to the total energy deficit during the race. At END, the IGFBP-3 fragmentation and IGFBP-1 were increased but these changes did not predict changes in f-IGF-I. An increase in POST24h IGFBP-2 levels in women was the only sex difference. Testosterone was decreased by 67 (12)% in the men and estradiol became undetectable in the women without any detectable increase in LH and/or FSH. In conclusion ultra endurance exercise results in similar IGF-IGFBP responses in men and women reflecting a catabolic state. IGFBP-2 was the only exception, with increased levels in women after exercise. A concomitant decrease in gonadal hormones was not related to endocrine changes in the IGF-IGFBP axis but may be related to local changes in IGF-I expression.

  • Disordered purinergic signaling inhibits pathological angiogenesis in Cd39/Entpd1-Null mice
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Pathology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9440 .- 1525-2191. ; 171:4, s. 1395-1404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CD39/ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-type-1 (ENTPD1) is the dominant vascular ectonucleotidase that catalyzes the phosphohydrolysis of extracellular nucleotides in the blood and extracellular space. This ecto-enzymatic process modulates endothelial cell, leukocyte, and platelet purinergic receptor-mediated responses to extracellular nucleotides in the setting of thrombosis and vascular inflammation. We show here that deletion of Cd39/Entpd1 results in abrogation of angiogenesis, causing decreased growth of implanted tumors and inhibiting development of pulmonary metastases. Qualitative abnormalities of Cd39-null endothelial cell adhesion and integrin dysfunction were demonstrated in vitro. These changes were associated with decreased activation of focal adhesion kinase and extracellular signaling-regulated kinase-1 and -2 in endothelial cells. Our data indicate novel links between CD39/ENTPD1, extracellular nucleotide-mediated signaling, and vascular endothelial cell integrin function that impact on angiogenesis and tumor growth.

  • Advanced machine service support using Internet-enabled three-dimensional-based virtual engineering
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 46:15, s. 4215-4235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the era of globalization, one of the key factors for manufacturing machine builders/suppliers to remain competitive is their capability to provide cost-effective and comprehensive machine service and maintenance for their clients at anytime, anywhere. Previous research has highlighted the role of virtual engineering tools in the design and development life cycle of manufacturing machinery systems. Virtual engineering models created during the development phase can potentially be used to provide valuable functions for many other tasks during the operational phase, including service and maintenance support. This paper introduces an innovative Internet-enabled three-dimensional-based virtual engineering framework that can be used for such purposes. Specifically, it addresses a system architecture that is designed to facilitate the tight integration between virtual engineering tools and a set of Internet-based reconfigurable modular maintenance supporting tools. This system architecture has been verified by implementations using different toolsets atop of various Internet technologies (e.g. XML Web services and LabView's Datasocket). Implementation details and successful industrial-based test cases are also provided in this paper.

  • A single bout of exercise activates matrix metalloproteinase in human skeletal muscle
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 8750-7587 .- 1522-1601. ; 102:6, s. 2346-2351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of this study were 1) to characterize changes in matrix metalloproteinase (NIMP), endostatin, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A expression in skeletal muscle in response to a single bout of exercise in humans; and 2) to determine if any exchange of endostatin and VEGF-A between circulation and the exercising leg is associated with a change in the tissue expression or plasma concentration of these factors. Ten healthy males performed 65 min of cycle exercise, and muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis muscle at rest and immediately and 120 min after exercise. In the muscle biopsies, measurements of mRNA expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-14, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase; VEGF and endostatin protein levels; and NIMP activities were performed. Femoral arterial and venous concentrations of VEGF-A and endostatin were determined before, during, and 120 min after exercise. A single bout of exercise increased MMP-9 mRNA and activated MMP-9 protein in skeletal muscle. No measurable increase of endostatin was observed in the skeletal muscle or in plasma following exercise. A concurrent increase in skeletal muscle VEGF-A mRNA and protein levels was induced by exercise, with no signs of peripheral uptake from the circulation. However, a decrease in plasma VEGF-A concentration occurred following exercise. Thus 1) a single bout of exercise activated the MMP system without any resulting change in tissue endostatin protein levels, and 2) the increased VEGF-A protein levels are due to changes in the skeletal muscle tissue itself. Other mechanisms are responsible for the observed exercise-induced decrease in VEGF-A in plasma.

  • Phylogeny of Hesionidae (Aciculata, Polychaeta), assessed from morphology, 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, 16S rDNA and COI
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Zoologica Scripta. - : Wiley. - 0300-3256 .- 1463-6409. ; 36:1, s. 99-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We assess phylogenetic relationships within the polychaete family Hesionidae from morphological data combined with nucleotide data from 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, 16S rDNA and COI. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses were performed on two data sets; the first was based on a more restricted set of terminals with both morphological and molecular data (17 ingroup terminals), while the second included additional taxa with morphological data only (25 ingroup terminals). The different sets of terminals yielded fully congruent results, as did the parsimony and the Bayesian analyses. Our results indicate high levels of homoplasy in traditionally used morphological characters in the group, and that Hesioninae, Gyptini and Gyptis are nonmonophyletic. Hesionini (mainly Hesione and Leocrates), Psamathini (mainly Hesiospina, Micropodarke, Nereimyra, Psamathe and Syllidia), Ophiodrominae (Gyptini and Ophiodromini) and Ophiodromini (mainly Heteropodarke, Ophiodromus and Podarkeopsis) are monophyletic and agree with previous classifications, and Hesionini is probably the sister to all other hesionids. The placements of the small hesionids capricornia and Lizardia, the hydrothermal vent taxa Hesiodeira and Hesiolyra, and the newly described Hesiobranchia, remain uncertain.
