  • New Dual Inhibitors of Bacterial Topoisomerases with Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Activity and In Vivo Efficacy against Vancomycin-Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-2623 .- 1520-4804. ; 66:6, s. 3968-3994
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new series of dual low nanomolar benzothiazole inhibitors of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV were developed. The resulting compounds show excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial activities against Gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium and multidrug resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus aureus strains [best compound minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs): range, <0.03125–0.25 μg/mL] and against the Gram-negatives Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae (best compound MICs: range, 1–4 μg/mL). Lead compound 7a was identified with favorable solubility and plasma protein binding, good metabolic stability, selectivity for bacterial topoisomerases, and no toxicity issues. The crystal structure of 7a in complex with Pseudomonas aeruginosa GyrB24 revealed its binding mode at the ATP-binding site. Expanded profiling of 7a and 7h showed potent antibacterial activity against over 100 MDR and non-MDR strains of A. baumannii and several other Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Ultimately, in vivo efficacy of 7a in a mouse model of vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus thigh infection was also demonstrated.

  • Promoting Gender Equality in Media Content: A Limitation or Extension of Freedom of Expression?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Handbook on Gender, Communication, and Women's Human Rights, Margaret Gallagher & Aimee Vega Montiel (Eds.). - Hoboken, New Jersey : Wiley. - 9781119800682 ; , s. 195-212
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is promoting gender equality in media content a limitation or an extension of freedom of expression? This question addresses the complicated intertwining of two political values essential in a democratic system. Whereas freedom of expression has long been safeguarded in international and national legal instruments, gender equality was established as a human right more recently. Fulfilling the goal of gender equality in media content through regulation is often perceived as a limitation of freedom of expression by the media industry as well as policymakers. Both self-regulation and regulation through legislation are needed to achieve gender equality in media content when it comes to eliminating gender stereotypes and combating sexist hate speech. Measures to safeguard gender equality in the media should be understood as expanding freedom of expression. It demands a system that goes far beyond protecting the individual right to free speech and the right to freedom from discrimination.

  • Gender Equality and Media Regulation Study : Sweden
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Freedom of expression and gender equality are core human rights. But women’s voices and perspectives are still missing in most of the news media all over the world, The 6th Global Media Monitoring project indicate that women make up only 25 percent of the news subjects and sources. Could regulation and/or self- regulation of the media be part of the problem - or part of the solution - to increase gender balance in the media? This mapping project, initiated by Fojo Media Institute in collaboration with Gothenburg University’s Department of Journalism, Media & Communication (JMG) and other partners1 is one in a set of country case studies conducted to understand how gender equality and women’s freedom of expression are integrated in media regulation, self-regulation and within media inhouse policies. The foundation for this work is The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for the Advancement of women (BPfA) adopted at the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women (1995) that called on governments and other actors to “increase the participation and access of women to expression and decision making in and through the media and new technologies of communication”, (Strategic objective J.1.) and “promote a balanced and non- stereotyped portrayal of women in the media” (Strategic objective J.2.).Similar to provisions in other policy instruments prior to and following the BPfA’s adoption, area J intimated at possible tensions between guaranteeing (women’s) freedom of expression on the one hand and media independence on the other hand. Freedom of expression and media freedom, however, are not mutually exclusive. Both are necessary for democracy and protected in international standards. Only in a society where there is a plurality of voices that participate in an accessible and dynamic public sphere is there room for the development and improvement of democracy. The case studies were implemented in some of the countries where Fojo is active, namely Armenia, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Somalia, Sweden and Zimbabwe. The case studies accompany a broader global study of gender in media law and policy at international, regional and country levels spanning more than 100 nations. The national studies are based on a pre-formulated framework of questions and tables that then was adapted for the individual country. The inclusion of Sweden as a case was due to both the fact that Fojo Media Institute is based in Sweden and that Sweden has a high standard of living that includes a strong infrastructure both regarding gender equality and freedom of expression. (Due to time restrictions, the Swedish report is quite brief).Ultimately, the global study and the individual country studies presented within the framework of Fojo Media Institute and its partners, seek to guide media development bodies and other stakeholders in their work to promote gender equality in and through the media with full respect for other human rights involved, particularly the right to freedom of expression and freedom of information.Kersti ForsbergDirector, Fojo Media Institute

  • Genome sequencing is a sensitive first-line test to diagnose individuals with intellectual disability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Genetics in Medicine. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1098-3600 .- 1530-0366. ; 24:11, s. 2296-2307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and/or neurodevelopment disorders (NDDs) are currently investigated with several different approaches in clinical genetic diagnostics. Methods: We compared the results from 3 diagnostic pipelines in patients with ID/NDD: genome sequencing (GS) first (N = 100), GS as a secondary test (N = 129), or chromosomal microarray (CMA) with or without FMR1 analysis (N = 421). Results: The diagnostic yield was 35% (GS -first), 26% (GS as a secondary test), and 11% (CMA/FMR1). Notably, the age of diagnosis was delayed by 1 year when GS was performed as a secondary test and the cost per diagnosed individual was 36% lower with GS first than with CMA/FMR1. Furthermore, 91% of those with a negative result after CMA/FMR1 analysis (338 individuals) have not yet been referred for additional genetic testing and remain undiagnosed. Conclusion: Our findings strongly suggest that genome analysis outperforms other testing strategies and should replace traditional CMA and FMR1 analysis as a first-line genetic test in individuals with ID/NDD. GS is a sensitive, time-and cost-effective method that results in a confirmed molecular diagnosis in 35% of all referred patients. (c) 2022 The Authors. • Going to extremes - a metagenomic journey into the dark matter of life
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: FEMS Microbiology Letters. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1574-6968. ; 368:12
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Virus-X-Viral Metagenomics for Innovation Value-project was a scientific expedition to explore and exploit uncharted territory of genetic diversity in extreme natural environments such as geothermal hot springs and deep-sea ocean ecosystems. Specifically, the project was set to analyse and exploit viral metagenomes with the ultimate goal of developing new gene products with high innovation value for applications in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical, and the life science sectors. Viral gene pool analysis is also essential to obtain fundamental insight into ecosystem dynamics and to investigate how viruses influence the evolution of microbes and multicellular organisms. The Virus-X Consortium, established in 2016, included experts from eight European countries. The unique approach based on high throughput bioinformatics technologies combined with structural and functional studies resulted in the development of a biodiscovery pipeline of significant capacity and scale. The activities within the Virus-X consortium cover the entire range from bioprospecting and methods development in bioinformatics to protein production and characterisation, with the final goal of translating our results into new products for the bioeconomy. The significant impact the consortium made in all of these areas was possible due to the successful cooperation between expert teams that worked together to solve a complex scientific problem using state-of-the-art technologies as well as developing novel tools to explore the virosphere, widely considered as the last great frontier of life.

  • Crystal structure of DNA polymerase I from Thermus phage G20c
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta crystallographica. Section D, Structural biology. - 2059-7983. ; 78:Pt 11, s. 1384-1398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes the structure of DNA polymerase I from Thermus phage G20c, termed PolI_G20c. This is the first structure of a DNA polymerase originating from a group of related thermophilic bacteriophages infecting Thermus thermophilus, including phages G20c, TSP4, P74-26, P23-45 and phiFA and the novel phage Tth15-6. Sequence and structural analysis of PolI_G20c revealed a 3'-5' exonuclease domain and a DNA polymerase domain, and activity screening confirmed that both domains were functional. No functional 5'-3' exonuclease domain was present. Structural analysis also revealed a novel specific structure motif, here termed SβαR, that was not previously identified in any polymerase belonging to the DNA polymerases I (or the DNA polymerase A family). The SβαR motif did not show any homology to the sequences or structures of known DNA polymerases. The exception was the sequence conservation of the residues in this motif in putative DNA polymerases encoded in the genomes of a group of thermophilic phages related to Thermus phage G20c. The structure of PolI_G20c was determined with the aid of another structure that was determined in parallel and was used as a model for molecular replacement. This other structure was of a 3'-5' exonuclease termed ExnV1. The cloned and expressed gene encoding ExnV1 was isolated from a thermophilic virus metagenome that was collected from several hot springs in Iceland. The structure of ExnV1, which contains the novel SβαR motif, was first determined to 2.19 Å resolution. With these data at hand, the structure of PolI_G20c was determined to 2.97 Å resolution. The structures of PolI_G20c and ExnV1 are most similar to those of the Klenow fragment of DNA polymerase I (PDB entry 2kzz) from Escherichia coli, DNA polymerase I from Geobacillus stearothermophilus (PDB entry 1knc) and Taq polymerase (PDB entry 1bgx) from Thermus aquaticus.

  • The Role of Legal Theory in Legal Education: A Reflection on Professional and Scholarly Ideals in Nordic Legal Education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal on Law and Society. - : Umea University Library. - 2002-7788. ; 4:3, s. 1-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article addresses the role of legal theory in legal education. Today, a multitude of perspectives is present within legal theory and, as a subject, it is not as distinct as it is sometimes claimed to be. It is evident when considering syllabuses in the Nordic countries that nearly all LLM programmes have ambitions to teach legal theory as embracing a multitude of theoretical and methodological perspectives. This multitude of perspectives promises adaptable content for the subject of legal theory in various legal contexts, and could facilitate a reflection on how knowledge is acquired and why. The challenge addressed in the article is the presence of explicit or implicit ideas from the subject of legal theory as comprising a coherent “legal method” and a specific list of accepted theories. The persistence of such ideas is scrutinised in this article with help of the concepts of “professional knowledge” and “scholarly knowledge”. In order to navigate the complex field of legal theories, students need meta-reflective skills, which means the ability to reflect upon the underlying complexity and multitude of the subject. This is shown by a case study from the Department of Law at the University of Gothenburg, together with examples from curricula and textbooks from legal theory courses across the Nordic countries.

  • Methane potentials and organic matter characterization of wood fibres from pulp and paper mills : The influence of raw material, pulping process and bleaching technique
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Biomass and Bioenergy. - : Elsevier. - 0961-9534 .- 1873-2909. ; 143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the process of pulp- and papermaking, large volumes of fibre-rich primary sludge are generated. Anaerobic digestion of primary sludge offers a substantial potential for methane production as an alternative approach to the inefficient energy recoveries by commonly used incineration techniques. However, a systematic study of the importance of upstream process techniques for the methane potential of pulp fibres is lacking. Therefore, biochemical methane potentials were determined at mesophilic conditions for 20 types of fibres processed by a variety of pulping and bleaching techniques and from different raw materials. This included fibres from kraft, sulphite, semi-chemical, chemical thermo-mechanical (CTMP) and thermo-mechanical pulping plants and milled raw wood. The pulping technique was clearly important for the methane potential, with the highest potential achieved for kraft and sulphite fibres (390–400 Nml CH4 g VS−1). For raw wood and CTMP, hardwood fibres gave substantially more methane than the corresponding softwood fibres (240 compared to 50 Nml CH4 g VS−1 and 300 compared to 160 Nml CH4 g VS−1, respectively). Nuclear magnetic resonance characterization of the organic content demonstrated that the relative lignin content of the fibres was an important factor for methane production, and that an observed positive effect of bleaching on the methane potential of softwood CTMP fibres was likely related to a higher degree of deacetylation and improved accessibility of the hemicellulose. In conclusion, fibres from kraft and sulphite pulping are promising substrates for methane production irrespective of raw material or bleaching, as well as fibres from CTMP pulping of hardwood.

  • Viscosity dynamics and the production of extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products during anaerobic digestion of pulp and paper mill wastewater sludges
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Bioprocess and biosystems engineering (Print). - : SPRINGER. - 1615-7591 .- 1615-7605. ; 43:2, s. 283-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production processes of the pulp and paper industry often run in campaigns, leading to large variations in the composition of wastewaters and waste sludges. During anaerobic digestion (AD) of these wastes, the viscosity or the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) may be affected, with the risk of foam formation, inefficient digester mixing or poor sludge dewaterability. The aim of this study was to investigate how viscosity and production of EPS and SMP during long-term AD of pulp and paper mill sludge is affected by changes in organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT). Two mesophilic lab-scale continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) were operated for 800 days (R1 and R2), initially digesting only fibre sludge, then co-digesting fibre sludge and activated sludge. The HRT was lowered, followed by an increase in the OLR. Reactor fluids were sampled once a month for rheological characterization and analysis of EPS and SMP. The production of the protein fraction of SMP was positively correlated to the OLR, implicating reduced effluent qualities at high OLR. EPS formation correlated with the magnesium content, and during sulphate deficiency, the production of EPS and SMP increased. At high levels of EPS and SMP, there was an increase in viscosity of the anaerobic sludges, and dewatering efficiency was reduced. In addition, increased viscosity and/or the production of EPS and SMP were important factors in sludge bulking and foam formation in the CSTRs. Sludge bulking was avoided by more frequent stirring.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high scoring of the Nordic countries indicates that the Nordic way of striving for gender equality has been successful in a global perspective. Gender equality is an essential element of the Nordic welfare state model, interwoven with and dependent on general welfare measures that shape everyday life for individuals and the organization of society. Anti-discrimination legislation, primarily directed towards the protection of individuals, forms just part of the comprehensive and progressive measures that have been adopted in Sweden in order to achieve gender equality. Despite the high ratings given to gender equality in Sweden in international comparisons and its ambitious gender equality policy and extensive legislation aimed at promoting gender equality and eliminating discrimination, many challenges remain. Together with the other Nordic countries, Sweden is internationally considered a role model and a forerunner for gender equality.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A shift from politics to law, inefficient enforcement tools, and dislodgment from action to information as well as criticism of gender equality from various angles have all had an impact on the law’s ability to contribute to the achievement of gender equality in Sweden. It is not primarily through anti-discrimination legislation and litigation that gender equality has been achieved in Sweden, and such an approach will probably not be the main strategy in the future. Still, we have to continue to improve the protection provided to victims of individual discrimination and harassment. The Swedish case shows how the individual’s right to access to justice can be undermined in a context where state bodies – such as the Ombudsman – are given wide discretionary powers to promote equality as a collective public interest.

  • Clinical features and treatment response to differentiate idiopathic peritonitis from non-strangulating intestinal infarction of the pelvic flexure associated with Strongylus vulgaris infection in the horse
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Veterinary Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1746-6148. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Peritonitis in horses secondary to non-strangulating infarction (NSII) has a guarded prognosis, even after intestinal resection. In contrast, horses with idiopathic peritonitis respond well to medical treatment. Affected horses in both cases often show signs of both colic and systemic inflammation, but early diagnosis is crucial for optimal treatment and an accurate prognosis. One cause of NSII is thrombus formation secondary to Strongylus vulgaris larval migration. There has been a documented increase in S. vulgaris prevalence in Sweden since the implementation of selective anthelmintic treatment in 2007, which subsequently could result in a rise in NSII cases. In a retrospective clinical study, medical records from cases diagnosed with NSII of the pelvic flexure or idiopathic peritonitis from three equine referral hospitals in Sweden during 2017-2020 were reviewed. Information including demographic data, relevant medical history, and clinical- and laboratory parameters were obtained from patient records. To facilitate the differentiation between cases of idiopathic peritonitis and cases with confirmed NSII of the pelvic flexure, the aim of the study was to compare clinical and laboratory parameters, clinical progression and initial response to antimicrobial treatment. A secondary aim was to compare survival-rates. Results Horses with NSII (n = 20) were significantly more likely to present during the winter months with a poorer response to medical treatment within 48 h. Cases of idiopathic peritonitis (n = 107) had a 100% survival rate with medical treatment, although one case required surgical correction of a colon displacement. In comparison, all confirmed NSII cases were non-responsive to antimicrobial treatment, with a survival rate to discharge of 50% after colon resection. Specific rectal findings and peripheral blood neutropenia were strongly associated with NSII. Conclusions In Sweden, idiopathic peritonitis cases still predominate over S. vulgaris associated NSII cases and have an excellent survival rate with antimicrobial treatment. However, horses presenting with septic peritonitis during the winter months with a palpable rectal mass and displaying fever and colic signs beyond 48 h of medical treatment are likely to suffer from NSII of the pelvic flexure and should be considered for abdominal surgery.

    • This book provides insights into the drive to achieve substantive gender equality in four Nordic countries: Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It draws a diverse and complex picture of the long, uneven, and unfinished process towards that goal. These countries’ systematic use of a combination of political and legal instruments has been described as the Nordic gender equality model. The Nordic states are known for the wide range of policies and programmes that, since the middle of the 20th century, have been adopted to ensure the provision of health services, education and economic safety for all, regardless of socioeconomic background and gender. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Nordic countries were among the first in the world to enact general gender equality and anti-discrimination laws with low-threshold enforcement mechanisms as an alternative to the ordinary courts.

It draws a diverse and complex picture of the long, uneven, and unfinished process towards that goal. These countries’ systematic use of a combination of political and legal instruments has been described as the Nordic gender equality model. The overall aim of such an approach is to achieve substantive equality through a variety of measures that go beyond formal equality. Laws and policies on gender equality vary with the political, social and legal context in each of the Nordic countries, but the Nordic gender equality model may be understood as consisting of three key components. The first is an overarching gender equality policy. The second is welfare legislation that has an explicit or implicit impact on gender relations. The third component is what we refer to as ‘gender equality and anti-discrimination law regimes’: laws that prohibit gender discrimination and promote gender equality through proactive measures, in combination with low-threshold enforcement systems.

    • A study of which content and source characteristics influence the acceptance of hate speech, which topics are more likely to be flagged, commented on, shared or liked by social-media-users than others, we conducted a choice-based conjoint analysis. A choice-based conjoint design allows us to analyze how important specific content characteristics are to users when they judge hate speech content and respond to it (cf. Wilhelm, Joeckel & Ziegler, 2020). We were particularly interested in the following aspects: Does it matter if a politician or an ordinary citizen spreads content? Is there a difference between a man and a woman spreading hate speech on social media? Does the type of hate speech affect users’ responses and if so, how do social media users react to agitation, defamation and rumors? And is it relevant whether the post already has many likes, comments and shares to respond to or not?

  • Ingår i: Pain. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0304-3959 .- 1872-6623. ; 162:7, s. 2087-2096
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACT: The International Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11) chronic pain classification includes about 100 chronic pain diagnoses on different diagnostic levels. Each of these diagnoses requires specific operationalized diagnostic criteria to be present. The classification comprises more than 200 diagnostic criteria. The aim of the Classification Algorithm for Chronic Pain in ICD-11 (CAL-CP) is to facilitate the use of the classification by guiding users through these diagnostic criteria. The diagnostic criteria were ordered hierarchically and visualized in accordance with the standards defined by the Society for Medical Decision Making Committee on Standardization of Clinical Algorithms. The resulting linear decision tree underwent several rounds of iterative checks and feedback by its developers, as well as other pain experts. A preliminary pilot evaluation was conducted in the context of an ecological implementation field study of the classification itself. The resulting algorithm consists of a linear decision tree, an introduction form, and an appendix. The initial decision trunk can be used as a standalone algorithm in primary care. Each diagnostic criterion is represented in a decision box. The user needs to decide for each criterion whether it is present or not, and then follow the respective yes or no arrows to arrive at the corresponding ICD-11 diagnosis. The results of the pilot evaluation showed good clinical utility of the algorithm. The CAL-CP can contribute to reliable diagnoses by structuring a way through the classification and by increasing adherence to the criteria. Future studies need to evaluate its utility further and analyze its impact on the accuracy of the assigned diagnoses.

  • Ingår i: Acta Haematologica. - : S. Karger AG. - 0001-5792 .- 1421-9662. ; 144:5, s. 519-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Treatment-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN) is a complication of multiple myeloma (MM) treatment. Objective: This real-world, retrospective study used electronic medical record (EMR) data from 3 Swedish clinics to assess the occurrence and economic burden of TIPN in patients with MM. Methods: Eligible patients had an MM diagnosis in the Swedish Cancer Registry between 2006 and 2015 and initiated treatment during that period. Follow-up was until last EMR visit, death, or study end (April 2017). The current analyses included patients receiving bortezomib, lenalidomide, carfilzomib, or thalidomide at any treatment line. To discern healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs associated with TIPN from other causes, patients with TIPN were matched with those without on baseline characteristics, treatment, and line of therapy. All analyses were descriptive. Results: Overall, 457 patients were included; 102 (22%) experienced TIPN. Patients experiencing TIPN during first-line treatment mostly received bortezomib-based regimens (n = 48/57 [84%]); those with TIPN during second- A nd third/fourth-line treatment mostly received lenalidomide/thalidomide-based regimens (19/31 [61%], 8/14 [57%], respectively). Patients with TIPN had higher HCRU/costs than those without TIPN (mean differences in hospital outpatient visits: 5.2, p = 0.0031; total costs per patient-year: EUR 17,183, p = 0.0007). Conclusions: Effective MM treatments associated with a reduced incidence of TIPN could result in decreased healthcare expenditure.

  • Nordic Equality and Anti-Discrimination Laws in the Throes of Change Legal developments in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Nordic states were among the first in the world to enact general gender equality and anti-discrimination laws with low threshold enforcement mechanisms. Today, the Nordic countries top the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Index – but have still not succeeded in closing the gender gap. This book draws a diverse and complex picture of the long, uneven and unfinished process towards substantive equality in four Nordic countries: Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland. It presents the Nordic gender equality model’s systematic use of three measures: overarching gender policies, legislation that has an explicit or implicit impact on gender relations and gender equality and anti-discrimination laws with low threshold enforcement systems. What potentials and limitations does the Nordic gender equality and anti-discrimination law regimes have to combat individual discrimination and structural inequality? Can these regimes function as a driver of political, legal, economic, cultural and social change, and as a corrective to laws, policies and practices that uphold existing inequalities, and, if so, to what extent? Can weaknesses in the equality and anti-discrimination laws and the way they are enforced hamper efforts to close remaining gender gaps? Rather than looking at the Nordic gender equality laws and policies in isolation, the book situates their development and transformative potential within a changing European and international political and legal landscape.

This articleprovides a brief review of the report and its major findings across six chapters that address key themesconcerning gender equality in the Arctic: Law and Governance, Security, Gender and Environment,Migration and Mobility, Indigeneity, Gender, Violence, Reconciliation and Empowerment and Fate Control.A major conclusion of the report is that accessible, comparable, gender-disaggregated, and Arctic -specificdata is severely lacking. Further, all chapters highlight the importance of gender-based analysis and gendermainstreaming in all decision-making processes at national and regional levels. The varying roles thatgender—and its intersections with existing inequalities—plays in mediating the impacts of climate changeand other socioeconomic transformations are also discussed throughout the report. The Arctic Councilis identified as the main driver for implementing recommendations that were provided and discussedat the Council’s Ministerial Meeting and in the Reykjavík Declaration 2021, where the eight ministers ofArctic states “Emphasize[s] the importance of gender equality and respect for diversity for sustainabledevelopment in the Arctic. . .encourage[s] the mainstreaming of gender-based analysis in the work of theArctic Council and call[s] for further action to advance gender equality in the Arctic”. This report and itspolicy relevant highlights, address these priorities and serve as a knowledge base for promoting genderequality and non-discrimination in the Arctic.

  • Entangled Law : A Study of the Entanglement of Wolves, Humans, and Law in the Landscape
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the legal protection of wolves in Sweden as an object of study, this dissertation examines how bodies often perceived as legal, social or natural entangle in a common co-production of law. The thesis begins with an analysis of how entanglements of nature, society and law have been discussed in environmental legal scholarship, with a main focus on the Uppsala Environmental Legal Method and Critical Environmental Law. Concepts from New Materialism and Legal Pluralism are then explored in order to contribute to the development of an understanding of law as co-produced in a mesh of entangled bodies in the landscape. Applying these concepts and discussions on legal protection of wolves, legal acts and institutions involved in the management of wolves are analysed through their entanglement with other bodies in the landscape. Special focus is set on legal hunting and a series of judgements concerning licenced hunting on wolves as well as on the entanglement of formal and informal norms in hunting communities. The wolf is reimagined as co-producing its legal protection through its entanglements with bodies such as human discourses and not least the law itself. The result is a reassembling of the legal protection of wolves in Sweden as a rhizome where law is co-produced through entanglements of multiplicities of bodies, only some of which are commonly viewed as legal. This understanding opens up legal analysis for a broader search for knowledges and solutions, which in turn can facilitate the co-existence of wolves and people in shared landscapes. The thesis also contributes to a general theory of entangled law by its discussion of a new materialist legal pluralism as well as the application of these theories on the issue of legal protection of wolves in Sweden.

  • Cardiac arrest in COVID-19 : characteristics and outcomes of in- and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. A report from the Swedish Registry for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Heart Journal. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0195-668X .- 1522-9645. ; 42:11, s. 1094-1106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To study the characteristics and outcome among cardiac arrest cases with COVID-19 and differences between the pre-pandemic and the pandemic period in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA).METHOD AND RESULTS: We included all patients reported to the Swedish Registry for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation from 1 January to 20 July 2020. We defined 16 March 2020 as the start of the pandemic. We assessed overall and 30-day mortality using Cox regression and logistic regression, respectively. We studied 1946 cases of OHCA and 1080 cases of IHCA during the entire period. During the pandemic, 88 (10.0%) of OHCAs and 72 (16.1%) of IHCAs had ongoing COVID-19. With regards to OHCA during the pandemic, the odds ratio for 30-day mortality in COVID-19-positive cases, compared with COVID-19-negative cases, was 3.40 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.31-11.64]; the corresponding hazard ratio was 1.45 (95% CI 1.13-1.85). Adjusted 30-day survival was 4.7% for patients with COVID-19, 9.8% for patients without COVID-19, and 7.6% in the pre-pandemic period. With regards to IHCA during the pandemic, the odds ratio for COVID-19-positive cases, compared with COVID-19-negative cases, was 2.27 (95% CI 1.27-4.24); the corresponding hazard ratio was 1.48 (95% CI 1.09-2.01). Adjusted 30-day survival was 23.1% in COVID-19-positive cases, 39.5% in patients without COVID-19, and 36.4% in the pre-pandemic period.CONCLUSION: During the pandemic phase, COVID-19 was involved in at least 10% of all OHCAs and 16% of IHCAs, and, among COVID-19 cases, 30-day mortality was increased 3.4-fold in OHCA and 2.3-fold in IHCA.

  • Conservation or Development? Challenging the Heritagization of Shielings in Transitional Times, for Climate Mitigation and (Post-)Pandemic Development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Heritage & Society. - : Routledge. - 2159-032X .- 2159-0338.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The classic Scandinavian shieling consisted of a fenced site onoutlying lands with meadows and structures for dwelling, stabling livestock, and processing milk. Through dismantling ofrural, forested areas, competition for forest use andheritagization, shielings have been marginalized in today’sagrarian life and framed as relics of an outdated system. Shielingowners, like small-scale farmers all over Europe, face challengesincluding economic viability, loneliness in their work, anddifficulty recruiting new shieling workers. Surviving shielings (c.200 in Sweden) are valued as local development assets and areoften considered valuable for their rich biodiversity and heritage. As such, they are subject to conservation schemes that mayconflict with development ambitions. Heritagization has alsorecently been challenged by archaeological and palaeobotanicalresearch showing that shielings, in contrast to current relicframing, were highly adaptable to changing local economic andcommunity conditions over almost 2,000 years. Herein, researchwork, community development, nature conservation, andheritage management perspectives are synthesized in adiscussion of shielings’ past, present, and future, with a particularfocus on the shieling Kårebolssätern. Based on historical findings, suggestions include promoting silvopasture and retro-innovativefood production contributions to sustainable (post-)pandemicdevelopment and climate mitigation. The importance of apolitical ecology shift and fairer conditions for shielings, and themarginalized communities harboring them, are also highlighted.

  • D 4.1 Report on legal and public policies proposals to address anti-gender hate speech
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective with this report is to present proposals of public policies, legislation, and self-regulation to address anti-gender hate speech directed towards individuals, groups and the principle of equal value and equal rights for all, a fundamental principle of any democratic society. In addition, the report will also point out knowledge gaps and need for more research. The proposals are, to start with, based on the findings in the GENHA project and discussions with various stakeholders at workshops held in the five countries Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Sweden during October 2021. They are moreover based on the presumption that hate speech is an act, which is or can be interlinked with other acts of violence exercised against women, groups of women, individual women or groups of people for their gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation (in the project included in ‘gender’). As such this violence is a violation of the basic values of democracy. Additionally, anti-gender hate speech may silence some voices and hence, restricts freedom of expression. Thus, anti-gender hate speech is a form of violence against women1, and others included in the concept of gender, and therefore, cyberviolence should be labelled in national and European legislations as a form of gender violence and violation of human rights. It also threatens basic democratic values such as freedom of expression and a diversity of voices.

  • Distanciation and inequalities in the Finnish and Swedish monitoring of elder care housing in Arctic communities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Distance, Equity and Older People’s Experiences in the Nordic Periphery Centering the Local. Edited By Shahnaj Begum, Joan R. Harbison, Päivi Naskali, Minna Zechner. - London, UK : Routledge. - 9781032248301
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Finnish and Swedish legislation on elder care housing aims at empowering and promoting the capability of older persons. In this chapter, the regional monitoring of such elder care housing is studied. The broad context is the Nordic welfare model, in recent years transformed into what is now called New Public Management. We ask how the governmental bodies in the Northern region monitor elder care housing and how they react to information and complaints from various stakeholders regarding the housing services. To accomplish this, we apply Therborn’s mechanisms of producing inequalities and how they hinder capability as a theoretical analytical tool by specifically examining the mechanisms of distanciation and exclusion. We then use it to illustrate the monitoring process and analyze the data. Based on a limited number of informal and formal complaints filed at the monitoring bodies (AVI and IVO), we raise concerns about inequalities and distanciation mechanisms that may be the result of a monitoring system that relies on presumed individual capabilities that are not always present. As not everyone has the capability to make a complaint, a system that places the right and the responsibility to complain on an individual level may lead to winners and losers.

  • Ingår i: Kjønn og rett: Kvinne-, kjønns- og likestillingsperspektiver i jusstudiet. - Oslo : Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 9788202767051
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Retfærd. Nordisk Juridisk Tidsskrift. - 0105-1121. ; 44:3 & 4 /170, s. 69-86

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age and Ageing. - New York : Springer. - 9783030780630 ; , s. 175-189
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, the tension between self-determination and human dignity in the Swedish legal system of social care for older people is analysed with help of the capabilities approach. The core focus of this approach is the individual person’s capability to make decisions. Also important is a supportive societal system that enables the realisation of self-determination, specifically for individuals who are not fully capable of making arrangements for themselves. The capabilities approach emphasises the responsibility of the State and can be used to analyse the impact of legal and political obligations for nation-states, and to balance the increased focus on self-determination and the quest for increased capabilities among older people. In the context of a dismantled welfare state, a one-sided focus on individual autonomy might turn out to be a double-edged sword, leaving the individual with self-determination but no (or insufficient) available care to decide about. In this chapter, the underlying principles of practical decisions are theoretically explored and reflected upon. Of specific relevance is human dignity (in addition to enhancing individual freedom), normativity (a set of fundamental capabilities is identified) and the central role of the nation-state (as the responsible political subject for the achievement of minimum thresholds for all capabilities).

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Yearbook of Polar Law. - 1876-8814. ; 14:1, s. 205-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article takes as its starting-point the Pan-Arctic report on Gender Equality in the Arctic (GEA report) and, in specific, the chapter on law and governance. Its aim is to provide an overview of the report’s chapter on law & governance. It provides a discus- sion on why gender equality is important in general and more specifically in the Arctic region, followed by a review of the chapter on law and governance and its findings through policy relevant highlights. The report demonstrated that Arctic governance does not prioritise gender equality and, more generally, that the goal of gender equal- ity is not fulfilled within the region. The chapter on law and governance highlights the need for shared gender equality commitments in Arctic public governing bodies and for a gender equality policy for the Arctic Council, including the application of an intersectional approach. Further, that Arctic States should collaborate to incorporate gender into the development of Arctic strategies. Finally, the report’s recommenda- tions, major areas of research interest and the next steps are discussed.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Hellums metode. Festskrift till Anne Hellum 70 år. - Oslo : Gyldendal Akademisk. - 9788205582859
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The experience-based everyday life perspective is a basic approach in feminist legal studies. In this tradition, Anne Hellum is an excellent role model, as she has personified and lived this scholarly tradition. In this chapter, we have paraphrased the subtitle of her book Human Rights, Plural Legalities and Gendered Realities, Paths Are Made by Walking, as this grounded approach inspires us to regard our academic professional experiences as a journey and to reflect on these experiences as a source of knowledge. We use ‘scholarly walk’ as a means to address the interaction between abstraction and concretion, meaning that theory and practice depend on and impact each other. Our site is the academia, and we’ll focus on certain defining moments, potential paths to take when coming to crossroads, the contribution to knowledge development and network building, the impact outside academia and the position as an outsider, in order to conclude with some recommendations from our collected walk of academic experiences.
