  • Overview of the JET results with the ITER-like wall

    • Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Z(eff) (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H-98,H-y2 close to 1 and beta(N) similar to 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential.

  • Overview of the JET results

    • Since the last IAEA Conference JET has been in operation for one year with a programmatic focus on the qualification of ITER operating scenarios, the consolidation of ITER design choices and preparation for plasma operation with the ITER-like wall presently being installed in JET. Good progress has been achieved, including stationary ELMy H-mode operation at 4.5 MA. The high confinement hybrid scenario has been extended to high triangularity, lower ρ*and to pulse lengths comparable to the resistive time. The steady-state scenario has also been extended to lower ρ*and ν*and optimized to simultaneously achieve, under stationary conditions, ITER-like values of all other relevant normalized parameters. A dedicated helium campaign has allowed key aspects of plasma control and H-mode operation for the ITER non-activated phase to be evaluated. Effective sawtooth control by fast ions has been demonstrated with3He minority ICRH, a scenario with negligible minority current drive. Edge localized mode (ELM) control studies using external n = 1 and n = 2 perturbation fields have found a resonance effect in ELM frequency for specific q95values. Complete ELM suppression has, however, not been observed, even with an edge Chirikov parameter larger than 1. Pellet ELM pacing has been demonstrated and the minimum pellet size needed to trigger an ELM has been estimated. For both natural and mitigated ELMs a broadening of the divertor ELM-wetted area with increasing ELM size has been found. In disruption studies with massive gas injection up to 50% of the thermal energy could be radiated before, and 20% during, the thermal quench. Halo currents could be reduced by 60% and, using argon/deuterium and neon/deuterium gas mixtures, runaway electron generation could be avoided. Most objectives of the ITER-like ICRH antenna have been demonstrated; matching with closely packed straps, ELM resilience, scattering matrix arc detection and operation at high power density (6.2 MW m-2) and antenna strap voltages (42 kV). Coupling measurements are in very good agreement with TOPICA modelling. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

  • Suppression of the magneto resistance in high electric fields of polyacetylene nanofibers

    • We present results of non-linear magneto resistance (MR) of polyacetylene nanofibers in high magnetic field up to H = 30 T at low temperature T = 1.5 K. The MR was proven to be of the spin origin; it reaches 16% at highest H. Unexpectedly, the MR was suppressed by increasing electric field E, vanishing at E ≳ 5 × 104 V/cm. It is understood that the doping induced spinless charged soliton pairs, which are initially confined to a certain distance because of the interchain phase correlations, and are deconfined in high electric fields, resulting in a vanishing magneto resistance (VMR). The role of the specific, degenerate ground state of the polyacetylene is confirmed by parallel studies of the different magneto resistances of polyaniline nanofibers which contrarily is not affected by the electric field. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.     • Charged particles and photons have been measured in central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV in a common (eta-phi)-phase space region in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The measured distributions have been analyzed to quantify the frequency with which phase space regions of varying sizes have either small or large neutral pion fraction. The measured results are compared with VENUS model simulated events and with mixed events. Events with both large and small charged-neutral fluctuations are observed to occur more frequently than expected statistically, as deduced from mixed events, or as predicted by model simulations, with the difference becoming more prominent with decreasing size of the A Delta eta-Delta phi region. Upper limits on the direct photon yield as a function of p(T) are derived and compared to the results for Pb + Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.3 GeV. The production of the eta meson, which is an important input to the direct photon signal extraction, has been determined in the eta -> 2 gamma channel for p + C collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.4 GeV.     • This report provides a summary of the third meeting of the Harmonising Outcome Measures for Eczema (HOME) initiative held in San Diego, CA, U.S.A., 6-7 April 2013 (HOME III). The meeting addressed the four domains that had previously been agreed should be measured in every eczema clinical trial: clinical signs, patient-reported symptoms, long-term control and quality of life. Formal presentations and nominal group techniques were used at this working meeting, attended by 56 voting participants (31 of whom were dermatologists). Significant progress was made on the domain of clinical signs. Without reference to any named scales, it was agreed that the intensity and extent of erythema, excoriation, oedema/papulation and lichenification should be included in the core outcome measure for the scale to have content validity. The group then discussed a systematic review of all scales measuring the clinical signs of eczema and their measurement properties, followed by a consensus vote on which scale to recommend for inclusion in the core outcome set. Research into the remaining three domains was presented, followed by discussions. The symptoms group and quality of life groups need to systematically identify all available tools and rate the quality of the tools. A definition of long-term control is needed before progress can be made towards recommending a core outcome measure.

    • This document describes the research activity in multi-node/multi-antenna technologies within METIS and positions it with respect to the state-of-the-art in the academic literature and in the standardization bodies. Based on the state-of-the-art and as well as on the METIS objectives,we set the research objectives and we group the different activities (or technology components) into research clusters with similar research objectives. The technologycomponents and the research objectives have been set to achieve an ambidextrous purpose. On one side we aim at providing the METIS system with those technological components that are a natural but non-trivial evolution of 4G. On the other side, we aim at seeking for disruptivetechnologies that could radically change 5G with respect to 4G. Moreover, we mapped the different technology components to METIS’ other activities and to the overall goals of theproject.

  • Eemian interglacial reconstructed from a Greenland folded ice core

    • Efforts to extract a Greenland ice core with a complete record of the Eemian interglacial (130,000 to 115,000 years ago) have until now been unsuccessful. The response of the Greenland ice sheet to the warmer-than-present climate of the Eemian has thus remained unclear. Here we present the new North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling ('NEEM') ice core and show only a modest ice-sheet response to the strong warming in the early Eemian. We reconstructed the Eemian record from folded ice using globally homogeneous parameters known from dated Greenland and Antarctic ice-core records. On the basis of water stable isotopes, NEEM surface temperatures after the onset of the Eemian (126,000 years ago) peaked at 8 +/- 4 degrees Celsius above the mean of the past millennium, followed by a gradual cooling that was probably driven by the decreasing summer insolation. Between 128,000 and 122,000 years ago, the thickness of the northwest Greenland ice sheet decreased by 400 +/- 250 metres, reaching surface elevations 122,000 years ago of 130 +/- 300 metres lower than the present. Extensive surface melt occurred at the NEEM site during the Eemian, a phenomenon witnessed when melt layers formed again at NEEM during the exceptional heat of July 2012. With additional warming, surface melt might become more common in the future.

    • This deliverable describes the current results of the multi-node/multi-antenna technologies investigated within METIS and analyses the interactions within and outside Work Package 3. Furthermore, it identifies the most promising technologies based on the current state of obtained results. This document provides a brief overview of the results in its first part. The second part, namely the Appendix, further details the results, describes the simulation alignment efforts conducted in the Work Package and the interaction of the Test Cases. The results described here show that the investigations conducted in Work Package 3 are maturing resulting in valuable innovative solutions for future 5G systems.

    • Layered cuprates Pr2 - xSrxCuO4-delta with T* (x = 0.3, 0.4) and T (x = 1.0, 13) structures were prepared in air at 1273-1373 K. Oxygen content (4 - delta) of the as-prepared phases decreases from 3.96 (x = 03) and 3.98 (x = 0.4) to 3.69 (x = 1.0) and 3.49 (x = 1.3), respectively, as determined by chemical titration. Dilatometry measurements revealed non-linear expansion with low- and high-temperature regions occurring due to thermogravimetrically detected oxygen loss. Different expansion behaviors in low- and high-temperature regions of T- and T*-phases are attributed to various distributions of oxygen vacancies in their crystal structures. Both x = 0.4 and 1.0 ceramic samples exhibit lower conductivity values at high temperatures in comparison with undoped Pr2CuO4. The temperature dependences of the electrical conductivity at variable oxygen partial pressure (Po-2 = 10(-4)-0.21 atm) reveal different mechanisms of the holes generation in x = 0.4 and 1.0 compounds. The tracer diffusion coefficient of oxygen (D-T) in Pr1.6Sr0.4CuO3.98 determined by isotopic exchange depth profile (IEDP) technique using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is in the range 6.7 x 10(-10)-5.7 x 10(-8) cm(2)/s at 973-1223 K. Obtained values are in between those for La2CuO4 and Pr2CuO4 with pure rock-salt and fluorite slabs in the crystal structure, respectively. This shows the importance of rock-salt slabs for high oxygen conductivity in R2MO4 oxides.

  • Fewer invited talks by women in evolutionary biology symposia

    • Lower visibility of female scientists, compared to male scientists, is a potential reason for the under-representation of women among senior academic ranks. Visibility in the scientific community stems partly from presenting research as an invited speaker at organized meetings. We analysed the sex ratio of presenters at the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) Congress 2011, where all abstract submissions were accepted for presentation. Women were under-represented among invited speakers at symposia (15% women) compared to all presenters (46%), regular oral presenters (41%) and plenary speakers (25%). At the ESEB congresses in 2001-2011, 9-23% of invited speakers were women. This under-representation of women is partly attributable to a larger proportion of women, than men, declining invitations: in 2011, 50% of women declined an invitation to speak compared to 26% of men. We expect invited speakers to be scientists from top ranked institutions or authors of recent papers in high-impact journals. Considering all invited speakers (including declined invitations), 23% were women. This was lower than the baseline sex ratios of early-mid career stage scientists, but was similar to senior scientists and authors that have published in high-impact journals. High-quality science by women therefore has low exposure at international meetings, which will constrain Evolutionary Biology from reaching its full potential. We wish to highlight the wider implications of turning down invitations to speak, and encourage conference organizers to implement steps to increase acceptance rates of invited talks.

    • Loss of water through the immature skin can lead to hypothermia and dehydration in preterm infants. The water and glycerol channel aquaglyceroporin-3 (AQP3) is abundant in fetal epidermis and might influence epidermal water handling and transepidermal water flux around birth. To investigate the role of AQP3 in immature skin, we measured in vivo transepidermal water transport and AQP3 expression in rat pups exposed to clinically relevant fluid homeostasis perturbations. Preterm (E18) rat pups were studied after antenatal corticosteroid exposure (ANS), and neonatal (P1) rat pups after an 18 h fast. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and skin hydration were determined, AQP3 mRNA was quantified by RT-PCR, and in-situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry were applied to map AQP3 expression. ANS resulted in an improved skin barrier (lower TEWL and skin hydration), while AQP3 mRNA and protein increased. Fasting led to loss of barrier integrity along with an increase in skin hydration. These alterations were not paralleled by any changes in AQP3. To conclude, antenatal corticosteroids and early postnatal fluid restriction produce differential effects on skin barrier function and epidermal AQP3 expression in the rat. In perinatal rats, AQP3 does not directly determine net water transport through the skin.

    • Objective: Obesity is linked to both increased metabolic disturbances and increased adipose tissue macrophage infiltration. However, whether macrophage infiltration directly influences human metabolism is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate if there are obesity-independent links between adipose tissue macrophages and metabolic disturbances. Design and Methods: Expression of macrophage markers in adipose tissue was analyzed by DNA microarrays in the SOS Sib Pair study and in patients with type 2 diabetes and a BMI-matched healthy control group. Results: The expression of macrophage markers in adipose tissue was increased in obesity and associated with several metabolic and anthropometric measurements. After adjustment for BMI, the expression remained associated with insulin sensitivity, serum levels of insulin, C-peptide, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and triglycerides. In addition, the expression of most macrophage markers was significantly increased in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to the control group. Conclusion: Our study shows that infiltration of macrophages in human adipose tissue, estimated by the expression of macrophage markers, is increased in subjects with obesity and diabetes and associated with insulin sensitivity and serum lipid levels independent of BMI. This indicates that adipose tissue macrophages may contribute to the development of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.

    • Seed-eating Apion weevils (Coleoptera: Apionidae) cause large economic losses in white and red clover seed production across Europe. Monitoring and control of clover weevils would be facilitated by semiochemical-based methods. Until now, however, nothing was known about physiological or behavioral responses to semiochemicals in this insect group. Here we analyzed the antenna of the white clover (Trifolium repens L.) specialist Apion fulvipes Geoffroy with scanning electron microscopy, and used single sensillum recordings with a set of 28 host compounds to characterize 18 classes of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs). Nine of the OSN classes responded strongly to synthetic compounds with high abundance in clover leaves, flowers, or buds. Eight classes responded only weakly to the synthetic stimuli, whereas one collective class responded exclusively to volatiles released from a crushed clover leaf. The OSNs showed a remarkable degree of specificity, responding to only one or a few chemically related compounds. In addition, we recorded a marked difference in the temporal dynamics of responses between different neurons, compounds, and doses. The identified physiologically active compounds will be screened for behavioral activity, with the ultimate goal to develop an odor-based control strategy for this pest.

    • ObjectivePain is one of the most debilitating symptoms reported by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. While the collagen antibody–induced arthritis (CAIA) model is used for studying the effector phase of RA pathologic progression, it has not been evaluated as a model for studies of pain. Thus, this study was undertaken to examine pain-like behavior induced by anticollagen antibodies and to assess the effect of currently prescribed analgesics for RA. In addition, the involvement of spinal glia in antibody-induced pain was explored.MethodsCAIA was induced in mice by intravenous injection of a collagen antibody cocktail, followed by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide. Disease severity was assessed by visual and histologic examination. Pain-like behavior and the antinociceptive effect of diclofenac, buprenorphine, gabapentin, pentoxifylline, and JNK-interacting protein 1 were examined in mechanical stimulation experiments. Spinal astrocyte and microglia reactivity were investigated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry.ResultsFollowing the induction of CAIA, mice developed transient joint inflammation. In contrast, pain-like behavior was observed prior to, and outlasted, the visual signs of arthritis. Whereas gabapentin and buprenorphine attenuated mechanical hypersensitivity during both the inflammatory and postinflammatory phases of arthritis, diclofenac was antinociceptive only during the inflammatory phase. Spinal astrocytes and microglia displayed time-dependent signs of activation, and inhibition of glial activity reversed CAIA-induced mechanical hypersensitivity.ConclusionCAIA represents a multifaceted model for studies exploring the mechanisms of pain induced by inflammation in the articular joint. Our findings of a time-dependent prostaglandin and spinal glial contribution to antibody-induced pain highlight the importance of using appropriate disease models to assess joint-related pain.

  • Features of cortical neuroplasticity associated with multidirectional novel motor skill training: a TMS mapping study

    • Given the evidence that the primary motor cortex (MI) consists of subpopulations of upper motor neurons tuned to different directional parameters of a motor movement, this study hypothesized that novel motor skill training involving either a bidirectional or more complex multidirectional tongue-typing movement should produce distinct training-related features of tongue MI neuroplasticity in humans. Novel motor skill training consisted of tongue typing using custom-made intra-oral keypads for 30-min over two consecutive days. The bidirectional keypad consisted of three sensors positioned along the upper palatal midline as a 3 x 1 array, whereas the multidirectional keypad consisted of nine sensors arranged as a 3 x 3 array that was centred along the upper palatal midline. Each sensor corresponded to one letter and participants were asked to type sequences of letters by accurately placing the tongue over the correct sensor. Before and after each training session, excitability of the tongue MI was assessed with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-motor evoked potentials (MEPs) over 13 motor map sites and TMS-MEP stimulus-response curves were constructed for the first dorsal interosseous (FDI, as an internal control). Tongue-typing performance improved within and across training days for both groups; although bidirectional training displayed greater success. Bidirectional and multidirectional training were associated with increases and decreases in a number of cortical motor map sites from where tongue activity could be evoked, however; multidirectional training was associated with a greater number of cortical motor map sites with increased excitability and a shift in the centre of gravity of the motor map. No effects of training were found on the FDI TMS-MEP stimulus-response curves. This study revealed distinct training-related features of tongue MI neuroplasticity and proposes that a greater amount of functionally related neuronal populations may be 'trained' by the inclusion of different and more complex directional parameters within a novel motor task.

The crystal structure of Sr(10)Ga(6)Sc(4)O(25) (x = 0.4) was determined by the Monte Carlo method and refined using a combination of X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction data [S.G. I4(1)/a, a = 17.517(1) angstrom, c = 32.830(3) angstrom]. It represents a novel type of ordering of the B cations and oxygen vacancies in perovskites. The crystal structure of Sr(10)Ga(6)Sc(4)O(25) can be described as a stacking of eight perovskite layers along the c axis ...[-(Sc/Ga)O(1.6)-SrO(0.8)-(Sc/Ga)O(1.8)-SrO(0.8)-](2 center dot center dot center dot) Similar to Sr(2)GaScO(5), this structure features a complete ordering of the Sc(3+) and Ga(3+) cations over octahedral and tetrahedral positions, respectively, within each layer. A specific feature of the crystal structure of Sr(10)Ga(6)Sc(4)O(25) is that one-third of the tetrahedra have one vertex not connected with other Sc/Ga cations. Further partial replacement of Sc(3+) by Ga(3+) leads to the formation of the cubic perovskite phase SrGa(0.75)Sc(0.25)O(2.5) (x = 0.25) with a = 3.9817(4) angstrom. This compound incorporates water molecules in the structure forming SrGa(0.75)Sc(0.25)O(2.5)center dot xH(2)O hydrate, which exhibits a proton conductivity of similar to 2.0 x 10(-6) S/cm at 673 K.

  • Quantitative Sensory Testing of Chronic Continuous Dentoalveolar Pain

    • Objectives: Chronic continuous dentoalveolar pain (CCDAP) is a new term for chronic pain around teeth. Quantitative sensory testing (QST) has shown promise as a tool for studying mechanisms of pain conditions. Aims: 1) compare sensory parameter values in CCDAP patients and symptom-free controls; and 2) characterize the somatosensory profile of patients with CCDAP. Methods: The German Neuropathic Pain QST protocol of 13 somatosensory function tests was adapted for intraoral use. Cases with CCDAP from tertiary care clinics were tested along with symptom-free controls. QST was performed intra-orally on symptomatic facial gingiva, asymptomatic contralateral site, and non-trigeminal site (thumb). Means and standard deviations were compared between symptomatic and asymptomatic sites within cases and with controls. Results: Interim analyses of 17 controls and 13 cases showed a mean age of 37 years for controls and 55 for cases. At the thumb, significant differences (p < 0.05) between cases/controls were apparent for pressure pain threshold (PPT) 353 vs. 453 kPa; mechanical pain threshold (MPT) 75 vs. 161 mN; and cold pain threshold (CPT) 8.4 vs. 2.8 C, all showing cases more sensitive. At the painful gingival site, significant differences between cases/controls existed for: CPT 17.4 vs. 8.1 C; HPT 44 vs. 49 C; MPT 55 vs. 154 mN; and PPT 106 vs. 172 kPa. Non-painful parameters, such as cold and warm detection threshold were generally not significantly different between cases/controls at thumb and painful gingival sites. Among cases only, comparing painful to nonpainful side, MPT was 55 vs. 96 mN; mechanical pain sensitivity 4.7 vs. 3.0; PPT 106 vs. 122 kPa, all more sensitive on the painful site. Conclusions: These results suggest that CCDAP patients are more sensitive to multiple modalities of painful stimulation at both non-trigeminal and trigeminal sites, and may be exhibiting a trigeminal neuropathy with gain in function.     • Bone mineral density (BMD) is the most widely used predictor of fracture risk. We performed the largest meta-analysis to date on lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD, including 17 genome-wide association studies and 32,961 individuals of European and east Asian ancestry. We tested the top BMD-associated markers for replication in 50,933 independent subjects and for association with risk of low-trauma fracture in 31,016 individuals with a history of fracture (cases) and 102,444 controls. We identified 56 loci (32 new) associated with BMD at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10(-8)). Several of these factors cluster within the RANK-RANKL-OPG, mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, endochondral ossification and Wnt signaling pathways. However, we also discovered loci that were localized to genes not known to have a role in bone biology. Fourteen BMD-associated loci were also associated with fracture risk (P < 5 × 10(-4), Bonferroni corrected), of which six reached P < 5 × 10(-8), including at 18p11.21 (FAM210A), 7q21.3 (SLC25A13), 11q13.2 (LRP5), 4q22.1 (MEPE), 2p16.2 (SPTBN1) and 10q21.1 (DKK1). These findings shed light on the genetic architecture and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying BMD variation and fracture susceptibility.

  • Lineshape of the thermopower of quantum dots

    • Quantum dots are an important model system for thermoelectric phenomena, and may be used to enhance the thermal-to-electric energy conversion efficiency in functional materials, by tuning the Fermi energy relative to the dots' transmission resonances. It is therefore important to obtain a detailed understanding of a quantum dot's thermopower as a function of the Fermi energy. However, so far it has proven difficult to take the effects of interactions into account in the interpretation of experimental data. In this paper, we present detailed measurements of the thermopower of quantum dots defined in heterostructure nanowires. We show that the thermopower lineshape is described well by a Landauer-type transport model that uses as its input experimental values of the dot conductance, which contains information about interaction effects.

    • Quantum dots are model systems for quantum thermoelectric behavior because of their ability to control and measure the effects of electron-energy filtering and quantum confinement on thermoelectric properties. Interestingly, nonlinear thermoelectric properties of such small systems can modify the efficiency of thermoelectric power conversion. Using quantum dots embedded in semiconductor nanowires, we measure thermovoltage and thermocurrent that are strongly nonlinear in the applied thermal bias. We show that most of the observed nonlinear effects can be understood in terms of a renormalization of the quantum-dot energy levels as a function of applied thermal bias and provide a theoretical model of the nonlinear thermovoltage taking renormalization into account. Furthermore, we propose a theory that explains a possible source of the observed, pronounced renormalization effect by the melting of Kondo correlations in the mixed-valence regime. The ability to control nonlinear thermoelectric behavior expands the range in which quantum thermoelectric effects may be used for efficient energy conversion.

  • Cobalt and Nickel Bioavailability for Biogas Formation

    • Supplementation of trace metals such as Co and Ni may improve anaerobic digestion of organic material for biogas formation. Which trace metals that are needed and the quantity to apply are, at least partly, related to metal speciation and bioavailability. According to the common perception, metals have to be dissolved to be available for microbial uptake. However, the impact of trace metal speciation on bioavailability is still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of Fe-, Co- and Ni-addition on the biogas process performance of stillage-fed lab-scale biogas tank reactors. Metal speciation was determined by sequential extraction (SE), extraction of acid volatile sulfides (AVS) and continuously extracted metals (AVS-Me). Sulfur forms, which may be associated to metal speciation, were studied with S XANES (sulfur X-ray absorption near edge structure). The effect of different Co- and Ni-concentrations on process microflora composition was examined with quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 454-pyrosequencing.The results showed that Co- and Ni-supplementation stimulated and stabilized the biogas process performance by increasing methane production and substrate utilization and by establishing low concentrations of volatile fatty acids. 10-20% of the total Co-amount was found in the dissolved phase, which shows that Co was relatively available for microbial uptake. Nickel was entirely associated to organic matter/sulfides and AVS, and was therefore considered to be non-bioavailable. Nevertheless, Ni-supplementation had stimulatory effects on the biogas process performance. This implies that Ni was available for microbial uptake despite its extensive association to sulfides and that other mechanisms than solubility govern the availability of this trace metal. The microbial analyzes revealed that it was primarily the methane producers which were affected by the concentration of Co and Ni. At stimulatory Co- and Ni-concentrations, the archaeal methanogenic community was dominated by aceticlastic Methanosarcinales. At lower Co- or Ni-levels, when biogas process performance was poor, an increase in hydrogenotrophic Methanomicrobiales was observed. This indicates a shift in the methanogenic flora, from being dominated by acetate utilizers to increased importance of hydrogen utilizers, and that the former was more dependent on Co and Ni.

    • BACKGROUND: The use of supplemental oxygen in the setting of suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is recommended in international treatment guidelines and established in prehospital and hospital clinical routine throughout the world. However, to date there is no conclusive evidence from adequately designed and powered trials supporting this practice. Existing data are conflicting and fail to clarify the role of supplemental oxygen in AMI. METHODS: A total of 6,600 normoxemic (oxygen saturation [SpO2] ≥90%) patients with suspected AMI will be randomly assigned to either supplemental oxygen 6 L/min delivered by Oxymask (MedCore Sweden AB, Kista, Sweden) for 6 to 12 hours in the treatment group or room air in the control group. Patient inclusion and randomization will take place at first medical contact, either before hospital admission or at the emergency department. The Swedish Web-system for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-based care in Heart disease Evaluated According to Recommended Therapies registry will be used for online randomization, allowing inclusion of a broad population of all-comers. Follow-up will be carried out in nationwide health registries and Swedish Web-system for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-based care in Heart disease Evaluated According to Recommended Therapies. The primary objective is to evaluate whether oxygen reduces 1-year all-cause mortality. Secondary end points include 30-day mortality, major adverse cardiac events, and health economy. Prespecified subgroups include patients with confirmed AMI and certain risk groups. In a 3-month pilot study, the study concept was found to be safe and feasible. CONCLUSION: The need to clarify the uncertainty of the role of supplemental oxygen therapy in the setting of suspected AMI is urgent. The DETO2X-AMI trial is designed and powered to address this important issue and may have a direct impact on future recommendations.

    • Novel complex oxides Sr2Ga1+x In1-x O-5, x = 0.0-0.2 with brownmillerite-type structure were prepared in air at T = 1,273 K, 24 h. Study of the crystal structure of Sr2Ga1.1In0.9O5 refined using X-ray powder diffraction data (S.G. Icmm, a = 5.9694(1) , b = 15.2091(3) , c = 5.7122(1) , chi (2) = 2.48, R (F) (2) (=) 0.0504, R (p) = 0.0458) revealed ordering of Ga3+ and In3+ cations over tetrahedral and octahedral positions, respectively. A partial replacement of Sr2+ by La3+ according to formula Sr1-y La (y) Ga0.5In0.5O2.5+y/2, leads to the formation of a cubic perovskite (a = 4.0291(5) ) for y = 0.3. No ordering of oxygen vacancies or cations was observed in Sr0.7La0.3Ga0.5In0.5O2.65 as revealed by electron diffraction study. The trace diffusion coefficient (D (T)) of oxygen for cubic perovskite Sr0.7La0.3Ga0.5In0.5O2.65 is in the range 2.0 Au 10(-9)-6.3 Au 10(-8) cm(2)/s with activation energy 1.4(1) eV as determined by isotopic exchange depth profile technique using secondary ion mass spectrometry at 973-1,223 K. These values are close to those reported for Ca-doped ZrO2. High-temperature electrical conductivity of Sr0.7La0.3Ga0.5In0.5O2.65 studied by AC impedance was found to be nearly independent on oxygen partial pressure. Calculated values of activation energy at T < 1,073 K for hole and oxide-ion conductivities are 0.96 and 1.10 eV, respectively.

  • Analysis of x-ray emission and electron dynamics in a capillary-guided laser wakefield accelerator

    • The dynamics of electron acceleration driven by laser wakefield inside a 30.5 mm long dielectric capillary tube is analyzed using radiation emitted in the x-ray range. 3D particle-in-cell simulations, performed with parameters close to the experimental ones, show that in long plasmas, the accelerated electrons catch up and finally overrun the driving laser owing to a higher velocity of the electrons in the plasma. The electrons are then transversely scattered by the laser pulse, and penetrate the capillary wall where they generate bremsstrahlung radiation, modeled using geant4 simulations. The signature of bremsstrahlung radiation is detected using an x-ray camera, together with the betatron radiation emitted during electron acceleration in the plasma bubble. The reflection of betatron radiation from the inner capillary surface also accounts for a fraction of the observed signal on the x-ray camera. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental ones and provide a detailed description of the electron and radiation properties, useful for the design of laser wakefield accelerators or radiation sources using long plasma media.

    • High-temperature crystal structure of the layered cuprates Ln(2)CuO(4), Ln = Pr, Nd and Sm with tetragonal T'-structure was refined using X-ray powder diffraction data. Substantial anisotropy of the thermal expansion behavior was observed in their crystal structures with thermal expansion coefficients (TEC) along a- and c-axis changing from TEC(a)/TEC(c)approximate to 1.37 (Pr) to 0.89 (Nd) and 0.72 (Sm). Temperature dependence of the interatomic distances in Ln(2)CuO(4) shows significantly lower expansion rate of the chemical bond between Pr and oxygen atoms (O1) belonging to CuO(2)-planes (TEC(Pr-O1)= 11.7 ppm K(-1)) in comparison with other cuprates: TEC (Nd-O1)=15.2 ppm K(-1) and TEC (Sm-O1)= 15.1 ppm K(-1). High-temperature electrical conductivity of Pr(2)CuO(4) is the highest one in the whole studied temperature range (298-1173 K): 0.1-108 S/cm for Pr(2)CuO(4), 0.07-23 S/cm for Nd(2)CuO(4) and 2 X 10(-4)-9 S/cm for Sm(2)CuO(4). The trace diffusion coefficient (D(T)) of oxygen for Pr(2)CuO(4) determined by isotopic exchange depth profile (IEDP) technique using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) varies in the range 7.2 X 10(-13) Cm(2)/S (973 K) and 3.8 X 10(-10) Cm(2)/S (1173 K) which are in between those observed for the manganese and cobalt-based perovskites.

    • During sexual conflict, males and females are expected to evolve traits and behaviours with a sexually antagonistic function. Recently, sexually antagonistic coevolution was proposed to occur between male and female diving beetles (Dytiscidae). Male diving beetles possess numerous suction cups on their forelegs whereas females commonly have rough structures on their elytra. These rough structures have been suggested to obstruct adhesion from male suction cups during mating attempts. However, some diving beetle species are dimorphic, where one female morph has a rough elytra and the other has a smooth elytra. Here, we used biomechanics to study the adhesive performance of male suction cups on the female morphs in two diving beetle species: Dytiscus lapponicus and Graphoderus zonatus. We compared adhesion on the rough and the smooth female morphs to infer the function of the rough elytral modifications. We found that the adhesive force on the rough structures was much lower than on other surfaces. These findings support the suggestion of sexual conflict in diving beetles and a sexually antagonistic function of the rough female structures. In addition, males differed in their adhesive capacity on different female surfaces, indicating a male trade-off between adhering to smooth and rough female morphs.
