  • Radiation-hard semiconductor detectors for SuperLHC
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 541:1-2, s. 189-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An option of increasing the luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to 1035 cm-2 s-1 has been envisaged to extend the physics reach of the machine. An efficient tracking down to a few centimetres from the interaction point will be required to exploit the physics potential of the upgraded LHC. As a consequence, the semiconductor detectors close to the interaction region will receive severe doses of fast hadron irradiation and the inner tracker detectors will need to survive fast hadron fluences of up to above 1016cm-2. The CERN-RD50 project "Development of Radiation Hard Semiconductor Devices for Very High Luminosity Colliders" has been established in 2002 to explore detector materials and technologies that will allow to operate devices up to, or beyond, this limit. The strategies followed by RD50 to enhance the radiation tolerance include the development of new or defect engineered detector materials (SiC, GaN, Czochralski and epitaxial silicon, oxygen enriched Float Zone silicon), the improvement of present detector designs and the understanding of the microscopic defects causing the degradation of the irradiated detectors. The latest advancements within the RD50 collaboration on radiation hard semiconductor detectors will be reviewed and discussed in this work.

  • Pion freeze-out time in Pb plus Pb collisions at 158 AGeV/c studied via pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 48:2, s. 343-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the final state Coulomb interaction on particles produced in Pb + Pb collisions at 158AGeV/c has been investigated in the WA98 experiment through the study of the pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios measured as a function of T-m- (m)0. While the ratio for kaons shows no significant T-m dependence, the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio is enhanced at small T-m - (m)0 values with an enhancement that increases with centrality. A silicon pad detector located near the target is used to estimate the contribution of hyperon decays to the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio. The comparison of results with predictions of the RQMD model in which the Coulomb interaction has been incorporated allows to place constraints on the time of the pion freeze-out.

  • Suppression of high-p(T) neutral pion production in central Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN)=17.3 GeV relative to p+C and p+Pb collisions
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 100:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.4 GeV at midrapidity (2.3 less than or similar to eta(lab)less than or similar to 3.0) over the range 0.7 less than or similar to p(T)less than or similar to 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi(0) spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N-part less than or similar to 300), the yield of pi(0)'s with p(T)greater than or similar to 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N-coll), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N-part greater than or similar to 350, the pi(0) yield is suppressed.

  • Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of collective flow in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions measured via inclusive photons
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 762:1-2, s. 129-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Directed and elliptic flow of inclusive photons near mid-rapidity in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions has been studied. The data have been obtained with the photon spectrometer LEDA of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The flow strength has been measured for various centralities as a function of p(T) and rapidity over 0. 18 < p(T) < 1.5 GeV/c and 2.3 < y < 2.9. The angular anisotropy has been studied relative to an event plane obtained in the target fragmentation region that shows the elliptic flow to be in-plane. The elliptic flow has also been studied using two-particle correlations and shown to give similar results. A small directed flow component is observed. Both the directed and elliptic flow strengths increase with p(T). The photon flow results are used to estimate the corresponding neutral pion flow.

  • Azimuthal anisotropy of photon and charged particle emission in Pb-208+Pb-208 collisions at 158 center dot A GeV/c
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 41:3, s. 287-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The azimuthal distributions of photons and charged particles with respect to the event plane are investigated as a function of centrality in Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at 158 (.) A GeV/c in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The anisotropy of the azimuthal distributions is characterized using a Fourier analysis. For both the photon and charged particle distributions the first two Fourier coefficients are observed to decrease with increasing centrality. The observed anisotropies of the photon distributions compare well with the expectations from the charged particle measurements for all centralities.

  • Long-term follow-up of the SBG 9401 study comparing tailored FEC-based therapy versus marrow-supported high-dose therapy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annals of Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-7534 .- 1569-8041. ; 18:4, s. 694-700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The purpose was to investigate adjuvant marrow-supportive high-dose chemotherapy compared with an equitoxicity-tailored comparator arm. Patients and methods: Five hundred and twenty-five women below theage of 60 years with operated high-risk primary breast cancer were randomised to nine cycles of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor supported and individually tailored FEC (5-fluorouracil, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide), (n = 251) or standard FEC followed by marrow-supported high-dose therapy with CTCb (cyclophosphamide, thiotepa, carboplatin) therapy (n = 274), followed by locoregional radiotherapy and tamoxifen for 5 years. Results: There were 104 breast cancer relapses in the tailored FEC group versus 139 in the CTCb group (double triangular method by Whitehead, P = 0.046), with a median follow-up of all included patients of 60.8 months. The event-free survival demonstrated 121 and 150 events in the tailored FEC- and CTCb group, respectively [P = 0.074, hazard ratio (HR) 0.804, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.633-1.022]. Ten patients in the tailored FEC regimen developed acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)/myelodysplasia (MDS). One hundred deaths occurred in the tailored FEC group and 121 in the CTCb group (P = 0.287, HR 0.866, 95% CI 0.665-1.129). Conclusion: The update of this study shows an improved outcome linked to the tailored FEC treatment in relation to breast cancer relapse, but also an increased incidence of AML/MDS. © 2007 Oxford University Press.

  • Post-thrombotic syndrome, recurrence, and death 10 years after the first episode of venous thromboembolism treated with warfarin for 6 weeks or 6 months
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. - : Elsevier BV. - 1538-7933 .- 1538-7836. ; 4:4, s. 734-742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The influence of the duration of anticoagulant therapy after venous thromboembolism (VTE) on the long-term morbidity and mortality is unclear. Aim: To investigate the long-term sequelae of VTE in patients randomized to different duration of secondary prophylaxis. Methods: In a multicenter trial comparing secondary prophylaxis with vitamin K antagonists for 6 weeks or 6 months, we extended the originally planned 2 years follow-up to 10 years. The patients had annual visits and at the last visit clinical assessment of the post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) was performed. Recurrent thromboembolism was adjudicated by a radiologist, blinded to treatment allocation. Causes of death were obtained from the Swedish Death Registry. Results: Of the 897 patients randomized, 545 could be evaluated at the 10 years follow-up. The probability of developing severe PTS was 6% and any sign of PTS was seen in 56.3% of the evaluated patients. In multivariate analysis, old age and signs of impaired circulation at discharge from the hospital were independent risk factors at baseline for development of PTS after 10 years. Recurrent thromboembolism occurred in 29.1% of the patients with a higher rate among males, older patients, those with permanent gering risk factor - especially with venous insufficiency at baseline - signs of impaired venous circulation at discharge, proximal deep vein thrombosis, or pulmonary embolism. Death occurred in 28.5%, which was a higher mortality than expected with a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.43 (95% CI 1.28-1.58), mainly because of a higher mortality than expected from cancer (SIR 1.83, 95% CI 1.44-2.23) or from myocardial infarction or stroke (SIR 1.28, 95% CI 1.00-1.56).The duration of anticoagulation did not have a statistically significant effect on any of the long-term outcomes. Conclusion: The morbidity and mortality during 10 years after the first episode of VTE is high and not reduced by extension of secondary prophylaxis from 6 weeks to 6 months. A strategy to reduce recurrence of VTE as well as mortality from arterial disease is needed. © 2006 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

  • Odour signals for detection and control of indoor pyralid moths
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IOBC/WPRS Bulletin. - 1027-3115. ; 41, s. 69-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three pyralid moths, the Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella), the almond moth (Ephestia cautella) and the Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella), infest food products all over the world and cause severe problems in factories, shops and households. For health and environmentalreasons chemical control becomes more and more restricted. We here present some promising results offering efficient detection and control of these species based on semiochemicals, and line up a number of remaining questions to be answered in order to improve the reliability and competitiveness of the methods used. For P. interpunctella and E. cautella we found that more complex pheromone blends were superior to the commercially available one-component blend in attracting males, andshould be used if increased sensitivity is desired. The almond moth, males as well as females, can be trapped in buckets with tap water, which will give an estimate of the population level without use of pheromone traps. All three species show positive response to odours identified from chocolate, and this could possibly be developed further and used to determine relative population densities. For population suppression the pheromone-mediated mating disruption technique was employed inlocalities with infestations of all three species. Based on several indirect methods to estimate the population densities we conclude that this technique has a large potential for controlling all three mothspecies.

  • Characterization of Superdeformed Bands in 62Zn
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 80:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combined data from four fusion-evaporation reaction experiments were utilized to investigate deformed and superdeformed structures in Zn-62(30)32. Combination of the Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer and ancillary particle detection systems allowed for the connection of rotational bands to well-known, low-lying excited states in Zn-62, as well as spectroscopy of discrete high-spin states reaching excitation energies of E-x=42.5 MeV. Four well- or superdeformed bands in Zn-62 are characterized and described by means of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • The high kinetic energy photoelectron spectroscopy facility at BESSY progress and first results
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 601:1-2, s. 48-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectron spectroscopy at high kinetic energy is a research field that receives an increasing interest due to the possibility of studying bulk properties of materials and deeply buried interfaces. Recently the high kinetic energy electron (HIKE) spectroscopy facility at BESSY in Berlin has become operative at the bending magnet beamline KMC-1. The first results show very good performance. Electron spectra have been recorded using X-ray energies from 2 keV up to 12 keV. Using back-scattering conditions in the crystal monochromator, very high-resolution has been achieved for photon energies around 2, 6 and 8 keV. In the latter case, spectra with a resolving power from the monochromator of >= 80 000 have been achieved and it has been possible to perform electron spectroscopy with resolving power of >= 60 000, yielding a total instrument resolution of about 150 meV as determined directly from spectra. This paper describes the facility and reports some of the first results. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Health before and after adoption from Eastern Europe
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatr. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253. ; 95:6, s. 720-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DESIGN: A population-based study of pre-adoption, arrival and post-adoption health. AIM: To report prenatal and postnatal background factors, morbidity, growth and development in adoptees from Eastern Europe. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All 99 children born in Eastern Europe between 1990 and 1995 and adopted to western Sweden during 1993-1997 were invited to participate in the study. Altogether, 76 (77%) participated. Medical records from the birth countries, from the examination at arrival and from medical reports made during a mean post-adoption period of 5 years were evaluated. RESULTS: Low birth weight (< or = 2500 g) occurred in 48%. Congenital malformations were found in 22%. The biological mothers of 33% of the children had been considered alcoholics, and 16% of the children's mothers had been diagnosed with a psychiatric disability. A high incidence of infectious diseases, neurodevelopment disorders and growth retardation had been noted during the pre-adoption period. Upon arrival in Sweden 75% were diagnosed with a medical condition, most often an infection. After a 5-year post-adoption period, small head circumference was associated with alcohol exposure during pregnancy and 46% had at least one neurodevelopment or behavioural disorder. CONCLUSION: Adverse prenatal and perinatal factors, congenital malformations and post-adoption neurodevelopment disorders were common. Adoptees and adopters have complex needs for health support and information.

  • A 60 000 year Greenland stratigraphic ice core chronology
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Climate of the Past. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1814-9332. ; 4:1, s. 47-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Greenland Ice Core Chronology 2005 (GICC05) is a time scale based on annual layer counting of high-resolution records from Greenland ice cores. Whereas the Holocene part of the time scale is based on various records from the DYE-3, the GRIP, and the NorthGRIP ice cores, the glacial part is solely based on NorthGRIP records. Here we present an 18 ka extension of the time scale such that GICC05 continuously covers the past 60 ka. The new section of the time scale places the onset of Greenland Interstadial 12 (GI-12) at 46.9 +/- 1.0 ka b2k (before year AD 2000), the North Atlantic Ash Zone II layer in GI-15 at 55.4 +/- 1.2 ka b2k, and the onset of GI-17 at 59.4 +/- 1.3 ka b2k. The error estimates are derived from the accumulated number of uncertain annual layers. In the 40-60 ka interval, the new time scale has a discrepancy with the Meese-Sowers GISP2 time scale of up to 2.4 ka. Assuming that the Greenland climatic events are synchronous with those seen in the Chinese Hulu Cave speleothem record, GICC05 compares well to the time scale of that record with absolute age differences of less than 800 years throughout the 60 ka period. The new time scale is generally in close agreement with other independently dated records and reference horizons, such as the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion, the French Villars Cave and the Austrian Kleegruben Cave speleothem records, suggesting high accuracy of both event durations and absolute age estimates.

  • A risk assessment of uranium in drinking water
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Naturally occurring uranium is known to give rise to adverse renal effects in various species after ingestion. This short review of uranium toxicity focus on three epidemiological studies on drinking water which are compared with a pivotal study in experimental animals used as a basis for limits of uranium in drinking water or guidelines in several countries. These studies are scrutinized and discussed, and it is suggested that authorities in this particular case to a higher extent should make use of epidemiological data in their evalutation. Finally, based on epidemiological data an intervention level for uranium in Swedish drinking water is proposed, namely 15 microgram per litre.

  • Evidence for nontermination of rotational bands in Kr-74
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three rotational bands in Kr-74 were studied up to (in one case one transition short of) the maximum spin I-max of their respective single-particle configurations. Their lifetimes have been determined using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The deduced transition quadrupole moments reveal a modest decrease, but far from a complete loss of collectivity at the maximum spin I-max. This feature, together with the results of mean field calculations, indicates that the observed bands do not terminate at I=I-max.

  • Sequential coagulation factor VIIa domain binding to tissue factor
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 337:4, s. 1276-1282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vessel wall tissue factor (TF) is exposed to blood upon vascular damage which enables association with factor VIIa (FVIIa). This leads to initiation of the blood coagulation cascade through localization and allosteric induction of FVIIa procoagulant activity. To examine the docking pathway of the FVIIa-TF complex, various residues in the extracellular part of TF (sTF) that are known to interact with FVIIa were replaced with cysteines labelled with a fluorescent probe. By using stopped-flow fluorescence kinetic measurements in combination with surface plasmon resonance analysis, we studied the association of the resulting sTF variants with FVIIa. We found the docking trajectory to be a sequence of events in which the protease domain of FVIIa initiates contact with sTF. Thereafter, the two proteins are tethered via the first epidermal growth factor-like and finally the γ-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) domain. The two labelled sTF residues interacting with the protease domain of FVIIa bind or become eventually ordered at different rates, revealing kinetic details pertinent to the allosteric activation of FVIIa by sTF. Moreover, when the Gla domain of FVIIa is removed the difference in the rate of association for the remaining domains is much more pronounced. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • Transition state analysis of the complex between coagulation factor VIIa and tissue factor : Suggesting a sequential domain-binding pathway

  • Ingår i: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 327:3, s. 789-793
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Injury of a blood vessel exposes membrane-bound tissue factor (TF) to blood, which allows binding of coagulation factor VIIa (FVIIa). This initiation of the coagulation cascade is dictated by a specific multi-domain interaction between FVIIa and TF. To examine the energies involved in the transition state of the FVIIa:TF complex, various residues in the extracellular part of TF (sTF) that are known to interact with FVIIa were replaced with a smaller cysteine residue. Determination of Φ values in each of the positions using surface plasmon resonance measurements enabled us to characterize the transition state complex between the resulting sTF variants and FVIIa. We found that the interactions in the transition state seemed to be most pronounced between the protease domain of FVIIa and sTF while detailed specific interactions between the Gla-domain and sTF were missing. Thus, the transition state energy data indicate a sequential binding event between these two macromolecules. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
