  • Predicting tensile strength in sawn timber using in plane fibre directions and dynamic modulus of elasticity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Madison, WI : U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory. ; , s. 242-249
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Machine strength grading of sawn timber is based on the relationship between indicating properties (IPs) and so-called grade determining properties (GDPs). The former are calculated using board properties measured non-destructively whereas the latter are determined by destructive tests. For T-classes, applied GDPs are tensile strength, density and modulus of elasticity in tension. Efficient utilisation of sawn timber thus require IPs predicting the GDPs with high accuracy. This study aims at deriving an IP for tensile strength in the board direction using multiple linear regression based on board properties and at applying this new IP in a grading method and calculating corresponding yield in T-classes. The nondestructive and destructive testing were performed for more than 900 boards of Norway spruce originating from Finland, Norway and Sweden. Board properties necessary for calculating this new IP were density, axial resonance frequency and in-plane fibre directions at the board’s longitudinal surfaces, and these properties were determined using X-ray scanning, dynamic excitation and optical scanning, respectively. A high coefficient of determination between IP and tensile strength was obtained, implying that this new IP predicts tensile strength better than IPs used in industry today. Furthermore, since only a part of the board is destructively tested, settings can be determined using either IPs calculated for the tested part of the boards or IPs calculated for the entire length of the boards. Employing the latter resulted in higher yields but lower coefficients of determination. Several grading machines on the market are based on this approach.

  • Inheritance of Mitochondrial DNA in the Pennate Diatom Haslea ostrearia (Naviculaceae) during Auxosporulation Suggests a Uniparental Transmission
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Protist. - 1434-4610 .- 1618-0941. ; 164:3, s. 340-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first study examining mtDNA transmission in diatoms, using sexual progeny of the pennate species Has lea ostrearia (Naviculaceae). A fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (cox1) with 7 nucleic substitutions between parental clones was used as a parental tracer in 16 F1 clones obtained from two pairs of mating crosses. Each cross involved a parental clone isolated from France (Bay of Bourgneuf) and Sweden (Kattegat Bay). We determined that all progeny possessed only one cox1 parental haplotype. These results suggest that the mitochondrial DNA transmission in H. ostrearia is uniparental. Implications and new topics of investigation are discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

  • Morphological and molecular characterisation of Tristoma integrum Diesing, 1850 (Monogenea, Capsalidae), including its complete mitogenome
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Parasite. - : EDP Sciences. - 1252-607X .- 1776-1042. ; 30, s. 16-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Capsalids are monopisthocotylean monogenean parasites found on the skin and gills of fish. Capsalines (subfamily Capsalinae) are large-sized capsalids, parasitic on highly prized gamefish, and species of Tristoma parasitise only the gills of swordfish (Xiphias gladius). We obtained specimens of Tristoma integrum Diesing, 1850 from swordfish collected off Algeria in the Mediterranean Sea. Here, we describe the specimens, including the key systematics characters of dorsolateral body sclerites. One specimen was used for a next generation sequencing analysis but a part of it, including the sclerites, was mounted on a permanent slide, drawn, and deposited in a curated collection. We characterised the complete mitogenome, the ribosomal cluster (including 18S and 28S) and additional genes such as Elongation factor 1 alpha (EF1α) and Histone 3. We also retrieved molecular information from the host tissue present in the gut of the monogenean and provide the sequence of the complete rRNA cluster of the host, X. gladius. The mitogenome of T. integrum is 13 968 bp in length and codes for 12 protein, 2 rRNA and 22 tRNA. Phylogenies of capsalids were generated from 28S sequences and concatenated mitochondrial protein-coding genes, respectively. In the 28S phylogeny, most subfamilies based on morphology were not found to be monophyletic, but the Capsalinae were monophyletic. In both phylogenies, the closest member to Tristoma spp. was a member of the Capsaloides. In an Appendix, we report the complex nomenclatural history of Tristoma Cuvier, 1817 and its species.

  • Separate Molecular Determinants in Amyloidogenic and Antimicrobial Peptides
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 426, s. 2159-2166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several amyloid-forming and antimicrobial peptides (AMYs and AMPs) have the ability to bind to and damage cell membranes. In addition, some AMYs possess antimicrobial activity and some AMPs form amyloid-like fibrils, relating the two peptide types and their properties. However, a comparison of their sequence characteristics reveals important differences. The high beta-strand and aggregation propensities typical of AMYs are largely absent in alpha-helix-forming AMPs, which are instead marked by a strong amphipathic moment not generally found in AMYs. Although a few peptides, for example, islet amyloid polypeptide and dermaseptin S9, combine some determinants of both groups, the structural distinctions suggest that antimicrobial activity and amyloid formation are separate features not generally associated. • Novel sugar-based gemini surfactants: aggregation properties on aqueous solution
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0894-3230 .- 1099-1395. ; 17:11, s. 934-944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gemini or dimeric surfactants can in principle be viewed as two conventional surfactants connected via a spacer at the level of the polar headgroups. A novel class of sugar-based gemini surfactants with rich and intriguing aggregation behavior in aqueous solution is the focus of this mini-review. The headgroup of the geminis consists of reduced sugars (glucose or mannose) connected to tertiary amines or amides. The alkyl tails have been varied in terms of tail length and degree of unsaturation. The spacers used are aliphatic [-(CH2)(n)-] spacers of varying length or short ethylene oxide (EO) spacers [-(CH2)(2)-(EO)(2)-]. By manipulating the molecular architecture and the solution conditions, a variety of supramolecular aggregates, such as vesicles and micelles, are formed from these sugar-based surfactants. In particular, the sugar-based gemini surfactants containing tertiary amines in the headgroup respond to the solution pH by forming vesicles in the monoprotonated state and micellar structures in the diprotonated (full protonation) state. The overall aggregation behavior is described well by conventional theories on surfactant aggregation, however, a surprising vesicle surface charge reversal as a function of pH will be described and discussed. • Bedside nurses' perspective on the fundamentals of care framework and its application in clinical practice. : A multi-site focus group interview study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Nursing Studies. - : Elsevier. - 0020-7489 .- 1873-491X. ; 145, s. 104526-104526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A changing nursing workforce and an increase in demands for care together with more complex care, raise arguments that leading and guiding nursing practice is more challenging than ever. Therefore, nurses need to have a shared agenda and a common language to show the importance of nursing care and the consequences of not addressing this in an appropriate way. In response to this the Fundamentals of Care framework was developed to also contribute to the delivery of person-centred care in an integrated way. However, to gain acceptance and applicability we need to ensure the framework's relevance to clinical practice from bedside nurses' perspectives. Objective: To describe bedside nurses' perspectives on the Fundamentals of Care framework and how it can be applied in clinical practice.Design: A descriptive qualitative design informed by the Fundamentals of Care framework.Setting(s): The study was undertaken at seven hospitals in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands during 2019.ParticipantsA total sample of 53 registered nurses working at the bedside participated.Participants: had a wide variety of clinical experience and represented a range of different nursing practice areas. Methods: Twelve focus group interviews were used to collect data and analysed with a deductive content analysis approach. Results: Bedside nurses perceived that the Fundamentals of Care framework was adequate, easy to understand and recognised as representative for the core of nursing care. The definition for fundamental care covered many aspects of nursing care, but was also perceived as too general and too idealistic in relation to the registered nurses' work. The participants recognised the elements within the framework, but appeared not to be using this to articulate their practice. Three main categories emerged for implications for clinical practice; guiding reflection on one's work; ensuring person-centred fundamental care and reinforcing nursing leadership. Conclusions: The Fundamentals of Care framework is perceived by bedside nurses as a modern framework describing the core of nursing. The framework was recognised as having clinical relevance and provides bedside nurses with a common language to articulate the complexity of nursing practice. This knowledge is crucial for bedside nurses both in clinical practice and in leadership roles to be able to speak up for the need to integrate all dimensions of care to achieve person-centred fundamental care. Various activities for reflection, person-centred care and leadership to apply the framework in clinical practice were presented, together with minor suggestions for development of the framework.Tweetable abstract: Bedside nurses recognise their clinical practice within the Fundamentals of Care framework, showing the core of modern nursing.

  • Descriptions of Fundamental Care needs in cancer care - an exploratory study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 27:11-12, s. 2322-2332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the experiences of the fundamentals of care for people with a cancer diagnosis, from diagnosis to after adjuvant treatment.BACKGROUND: More focus is needed on the experience of people living with cancer, as current cancer care more emphasises on independence and resilience without fully acknowledging that there will be moments in the cancer journey where patients will need 'basic nursing care' to manage their symptoms and care pathways.DESIGN: Secondary analysis of qualitative data.METHOD: Secondary thematic analysis of interview data from 30 people with a diagnosis of breast (n=10), colorectal (n=10) or prostate (n=10) cancer was undertaken.RESULTS: The findings revealed vivid descriptions of the fundamentals of care (i.e. basic needs) and participants described physical, psychosocial and relational aspects of the delivery of care. Both positive (e.g. supportive and kind) and negative (e.g. humiliating) experiences related to the relationship with the healthcare professionals were re-counted and affected the participants' experiences of the fundamentals of care. Participants' accounts of their fundamental care needs were provided without them identifying who, within the health care system, was responsible for providing these needs. Specific nursing interventions were seldom described.CONCLUSION: Some people with a cancer diagnosis have to strive for help and support from the nursing staff to manage to regain control over their recovery. Nurses in cancer care need to focus on the patients' fundamental care needs to optimise their patients' recovery. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

  • Active gas features in three HSC-SSP CAMIRA clusters revealed by high angular resolution analysis of MUSTANG-2 SZE and XXL X-ray observations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 501:2, s. 1701-1732
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results from simultaneous modelling of high angular resolution GBT/MUSTANG-2 90 GHz Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) measurements and XMM-XXL X-ray images of three rich galaxy clusters selected from the HSC-SSP Survey. The combination of high angular resolution SZE and X-ray imaging enables a spatially resolved multicomponent analysis, which is crucial to understand complex distributions of cluster gas properties. The targeted clusters have similar optical richnesses and redshifts, but exhibit different dynamical states in their member galaxy distributions: a single-peaked cluster, a double-peaked cluster, and a cluster belonging to a supercluster. A large-scale residual pattern in both regular Compton-parameter y and X-ray surface brightness distributions is found in the single-peaked cluster, indicating a sloshing mode. The double-peaked cluster shows an X-ray remnant cool core between two SZE peaks associated with galaxy concentrations. The temperatures of the two peaks reach similar to 20-30 keV in contrast to the cool core component of similar to 2 keV, indicating a violent merger. The main SZE signal for the supercluster is elongated along a direction perpendicular to the major axis of the X-ray core, suggesting a minor merger before core passage. The S-X and y distributions are thus perturbed at some level, regardless of the optical properties. We find that the integrated Compton y parameter and the temperature for the major merger are boosted from those expected by the weak-lensing mass and those for the other two clusters show no significant deviations, which is consistent with predictions of numerical simulations.

  • Infants Consider the Distributor’s Intentions in Resource Allocation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-1078. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent experimental studies suggest that preverbal infants are able to evaluate agents on the basis of their distributive actions. Here we asked whether such evaluations are based on infants’ understanding of the distributors’ intentions, or only the outcome of their actions. Ten-month-old infants observed animated movies of unequal resource allocations by distributors who attempted but failed to distribute resources equally or unequally between two individuals. We found that infants attended longer to the test event showing a third agent approaching a distributor who was unable to make an unequal distribution, compared to the test event where the third agent approached a distributor who was unable to make an equal distribution of resources. Our results suggest that infants’ ability to encode distributive actions goes beyond an analysis of the outcome of these actions, by including the intentions of the distributors whose actions lead to these outcomes.

  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Acta neurologica Scandinavica. - 0001-6314. ; 89:6, s. 451-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Six non-compromised patients with cytomegalovirus (CMV) associated meningoencephalitis are described. CMV was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 2/4 cases, while the diagnosis was based on an 8-fold rise in CMV-specific serum IgG antibodies and intrathecal antibody production against CMV in one case. By the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) CMV DNA was detected in the CSF in 5/5 cases and in serum in 3/4 cases. In one patient who had an Influenza A infection, both CMV and Epstein-Barr virus DNA were detected by PCR in the CSF. In 4 patients possible triggering events could be identified. Symptoms and signs indicating a multifocal brain involvement were present in 4 patients. The outcome was generally favourable except for sequelae in form of slight dysphasia in one case.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of medical virology. - 0146-6615. ; 46:3, s. 274-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been shown to be a sensitive method of diagnosing CMV disease in the central nervous system. Since CMV causes latent infection in white blood cells, an unanswered question is whether detection of latent CMV DNA in the cell fraction of CSF samples by PCR is possible in seropositive patients. In a prospective study, the finding of CMV DNA in CSF of CMV seropositive patients with suspected viral infection of the central nervous system (CNS) was evaluated clinically. Fractionation of 64 CSF samples from seropositive patients was carried out before analysing the samples for CMV DNA by PCR. In four of the five patients who had CMV DNA in the cell pellet and/or supernatant, the clinical data suggested CMV-associated neurological disease. The remaining 59 samples were negative in both pellet and supernatant. In addition, 11 CSF samples with high cell counts from patients with bacterial meningitis were examined for CMV DNA and found to be negative in 10 patients and positive in 1. One hundred thirty two uncentrifuged CSF samples were used as negative controls. The results of the study indicate that detection of CMV DNA in CSF samples by PCR correlated well with disease and was not due to latent CMV infection.

  • Exploring common ground for defining adequate social participation in 24 EU capital cities (CSB Working paper no. 19/12)
  • 2019
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Without comparable benchmarks, the cross-national monitoring of the adequacy of minimum income schemes is impossible. However, it is not so straightforward to define what comparability means in this context, and how it should be operationalised. In this paper, we explore the possibility of a comparable benchmark for a minimum income starting from the concept of ‘adequate social participation’. At the minimum, comparability would require that people can have a broadly similar understanding of what adequate social participation means. Obviously, the financial resources that households require at the minimum for adequate social participation vary across time and space due to differences in climate and geographical context, institutional differences, culture and social expectations, as well as variations in the availability, quality and price of essential goods and services. Yet, without a common understanding of what ‘adequate social participation’ means at a more general level, a benchmark of ‘adequacy’ that is substantively comparable across countries remains highly elusive. Therefore, in this paper we explore to what extent there is a common understanding of ‘adequate social participation’ in terms of the essential social positions that one should be able to take, and in terms of the needs that should be satisfied to be able to fulfil in an adequate way the social roles associated with these positions. We embed our notion of adequate social participation in the literature on human needs. A large-scale project that involved country teams in all EU Member States, enabled us to develop a ‘core list’ of social positions, and to validate these as well as a list of intermediate needs across EU Member States using two sources. Formal social expectations have been explored in terms of commitments of Member States to international guidelines and regulations; informal social expectations regarding essential social positions and human needs have subsequently been assessed in three focus group discussions in each of 24 EU capital cities. Overall, the discussions in focus groups across the EU confirm there is quite some common ground with respect to what can be understood under the heading of adequate social participation in terms of essential social positions and needs that should be fulfilled. This provides support for efforts aimed at developing comparable benchmarks to assess the adequacy of social protection schemes.

    • This report reveals a novel and specific role of the nuclear receptor liver X receptor β (LXRβ) in controlling biliary tree pathophysiology. LXRβ−/− mice have high gallbladder bile volume and are affected by a cholangiopathy that resembles cystic fibrosis. We found LXRβ to regulate the expression of both aquaporins water channels and the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. This opens a new field in biliary tree pathophysiology, enlightening a possible transcription factor controlling CFTR expression.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of ionic liquid (IL) molecular structure on nanoscale friction has been investigated using colloidal probe Friction Force Microscopy (FFM). The ILs studied were ethylammonium formate (EAF), ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), propylammonium formate (PAF), propylammonium nitrate (PAN), dimethylethylammonium formate (DMEAF), and ethanolammonium nitrate (EtAN). ILs were confined between a silica colloid probe and a mica surface, and the friction force was measured as a function of normal load for sliding velocities between 10 and 40 mu m s(-1). At low normal forces, multiple IL layers are found between the probe and the surface, but at higher force, in the boundary layer regime, a single ion layer separates the probe and the surface. In the boundary layer regime energy is dissipated by two main pathways. Firstly, the ionic liquid near the surface, with the exception of the boundary layer, is expelled from the advancing contact made by the probe on the surface. This disruption in the interactions between the boundary layer and the near surface multilayers, leads to energy dissipation and depends on the strength of the attraction between the boundary and near surface layers. The second pathway is via rotations and twists of ions in the boundary layer, primarily associated with the cation terminal methyl group. The friction coefficient did not vary over the limited range of sliding speeds investigated.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasing evidence recognizes Alzheimer's disease (AD) as a multifactorial and heterogeneous disease with multiple contributors to its pathophysiology, including vascular dysfunction. The recently updated AD Research Framework put forth by the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association describes a biomarker-based pathologic definition of AD focused on amyloid, tau, and neuronal injury. In response to this article, here we first discussed evidence that vascular dysfunction is an important early event in AD pathophysiology. Next, we examined various imaging sequences that could be easily implemented to evaluate different types of vascular dysfunction associated with, and/or contributing to, AD pathophysiology, including changes in blood-brain barrier integrity and cerebral blood flow. Vascular imaging biomarkers of small vessel disease of the brain, which is responsible for >50% of dementia worldwide, including AD, are already established, well characterized, and easy to recognize. We suggest that these vascular biomarkers should be incorporated into the AD Research Framework to gain a better understanding of AD pathophysiology and aid in treatment efforts.

  • Cloud partitioning of isocyanic acid (HNCO) and evidence of secondary source of HNCO in ambient air
  • 2014

    • Although isocyanic acid (HNCO) may cause a variety of health issues via protein carbamylation and has been proposed as a key compound in smoke-related health issues, our understanding of the atmospheric sources and fate of this toxic compound is currently incomplete. To address these issues, a field study was conducted at Mount Soledad, La Jolla, CA, to investigate partitioning of HNCO to clouds and fogs using an Acetate Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer coupled to a ground-based counterflow virtual impactor. The first field evidence of cloud partitioning of HNCO is presented, demonstrating that HNCO is dissolved in cloudwater more efficiently than expected based on the effective Henry's law solubility. The measurements also indicate evidence for a secondary, photochemical source of HNCO in ambient air at this site.
