  • The substitution of labor: From technological feasibility to other factors influencing the potential of job automation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Digital Transformation of Labor (Open Access): Automation, the Gig Economy and Welfare. - London : Routledge. - 9780429317866 - 9780367330705 ; , s. 31-73
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Artificial intelligence, machine learning (a subcategory of AI), and robotics are three technologies that perform an increasingly wider variety of routine and even non-routine job tasks. This chapter provides an overview of digitalization and automation along with the three underlying technologies and explores the potential of these technologies to replace human capabilities in the workplace. Subsequently, it discusses a set of factors beyond technological feasibility that influence the pace and scope of job automation. Some of the chapter’s key findings include the following: (1) The majority of jobs will be affected by the automation of individual activities, but only a few have the potential to be completely substituted; (2) the automation potential for non-routine tasks seems to remain limited, especially for tasks involving autonomous mobility, creativity, problem-solving and complex communication; (3) the nature of jobs will change as mundane tasks will be substituted and people will work more closely together with machines; and (4) industries that have a large potential for labor substitution are food and accommodation services, transportation and warehousing, retail trade, wholesale trade and manufacturing.

  • Digital transformation and public services: Societal impacts in Sweden and beyond
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through a series of studies, the overarching aim of this book is to investigate if and how the digitalization/digital transformation process affects various welfare services provided by the public sector, and the ensuing implications thereof. Ultimately, this book seeks to understand if it is conceivable for digital advancement to result in the creation of private/non-governmental alternatives to welfare services, possibly in a manner that transcends national boundaries. This study also investigates the possible ramifications of technological development for the public sector and the Western welfare society at large. This book takes its point of departure from the 2016 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report that targets specific public service areas in which government needs to adopt new strategies not to fall behind. Specifically, this report emphasizes the focus on digitalization of health care/social care, education, and protection services, including the use of assistive technologies referred to as "digital welfare." Hence, this book explores the factors potentially leading to whether state actors could be overrun by other non-governmental actors, disrupting the current status quo of welfare services. The book seeks to provide an innovative, enriching, and controversial take on society at large and how various aspects of the public sector can be, and are, affected by the ongoing digitalization process in a way that is not covered by extant literature on the market. This book takes its point of departure in Sweden given the fact that Sweden is one of the most digitalized countries in Europe, according to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), making it a pertinent research case. However, as digitalization transcends national borders, large parts of the subject matter take on an international angle. This includes cases from several other countries around Europe as well as the United States.

  • Being Different by Being Yourself: Identity as a Driver of Business Model Innovation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the concept of business models as a source of competitive advantage is noticeably established, we have a paucity in understanding how new business models are created and existing ones changed. In line with some recent studies, we draw attention to endogenous processes of business model innovation (as opposed to the more prominent logic of exogenous motivation). Following the notion that identity is central to an organization’s self-concept and control for appropriate action, we develop a model of how organizational identity affects the motivation (i.e., what triggers the need for innovation) and sourcing (i.e. where do constituents of the new business model come from) of business model innovation. Based on a longitudinal case study of an open source company, we highlight how a distinct choice for a hybrid identity (i.e. multiple, possibly conflicting organizational claims) drove the design and subsequent innovation of three different business models over the course of a 14 year period. This study contributes to the behavioral perspective in strategy by analyzing business models as reflections of an organization's self-concepts.

  • Weaving the symbiotic relationship : A longitudinal study of the maintenance of a firm-sponsored open source community
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The phenomenon of firm sponsored open source software (OSS) projects has become an established and widely used approach to develop and release new products in the software industry. In this arrangement, a sponsoring firm and a community establish a relationship to create a common project. When a firm fully commits to this type of development, it enters into a symbiotic relationship with its OSS community. This implies their mutual dependence and the presence of competing demands, both for openness – so that everyone can contribute to the common project and appropriate value from it, and for control – to affect the project content and direction. Although earlier studies have recognized the paradoxical nature of these competing and interrelated demands, so far there have been only limited attempts to understand its implications for maintaining such a symbiotic relationship.Hence, the aim of this thesis is to deepen our understanding of the symbiotic relationship by answering the following question: How is a symbiotic firm-community relationship maintained? To address this question, a qualitative research design is adopted through a single in depth longitudinal case study of the relationship between a Nordic European firm and its OSS community throughout their 13 plus years of history, from 2002 till 2015, by combining archival resources, observations and interviews. Recognizing the nature of these competing demands, a paradox lens is introduced as a way to frame the firm-community relationship. This allows identification of six paradoxical tensions that affect the relationship and five responses used to address the paradoxical tensions as they manifest. Building on these different insights a conceptual model of the firm-community relationship is developed. The model highlights that responses in many instances become the cause of subsequent paradoxical tensions. This insight underpinned the search for an alternative understanding of maintenance beyond instances of single tensions and response, by suggesting three different approaches to maintaining the firm-community relationship, namely, improvising, separating and weaving. This study contributes to extant literature by giving prominence to the relationship as a conduit of interaction in which both the firm and community should be able to extend their influence while also being subject to the influence of each other. In particular, based on the insights of the weaving approach, I suggest understanding maintenance as a process of creation, where quite apart from the design of the relationship, there is a need to reconsider the features of key actors, not solely in terms of motivation, but also including their knowledge, skill and ways of thinking.

  • Beyond gaming: Linking flow, brand attitudes, and purchase intent in realistic and emergent three-dimensional virtual environments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Information Technology and People. - : Emerald. - 0959-3845. ; 32:6 special issue, s. 1397-1422
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test flow as a construct distinctly separate from its antecedents, and the resulting impact on brand attitudes and purchase intent within realistic online shopping three-dimensional virtual environments (3-DVEs). Design/methodology/approach This research utilizes a field study, combined with a survey research design of 348 3-DVE participants. Findings The findings reveal that flow is not a unidimensional construct but rather, a mental state that should be measured separately from its antecedents, with the possibility that certain antecedents may be more relevant than others in different activities. Furthermore, the authors received strong support for the overarching hypothesized model separating the nine dimensions associated with engagement in an activity as antecedents of flow, which, in turn, influences brand attitude and thereafter purchase intention. Research limitations/implications - This study was limited to one type of activity within one 3-DVE but is balanced by the difficulty in gaining access to organizations and computer-mediated environments of this type for examining such phenomena. Practical implications - Businesses using 3-DVEs to market brands should focus their efforts on creating highly enjoyable experiences that result in the feeling of a loss of sense of time for the participants in order to ultimately positively influence purchase intentions. Originality/value Prior research focused on fantasy-based, game-oriented environments, while also neglecting to test all elements of flow, examining "similar to flow" constructs or measuring flow as a unidimensional construct.

  • Corporate crowdfunding
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Crowdfunding has thus far been run by stand-alone crowdfunding platforms, many of them formed by for-profit companies. However, a number of universities have begun to start their own platforms. These «corporate crowdfunding» platforms are likely to have more resources at their disposal than stand-alone platforms but less flexibility as the overarching organization exerts control and decision-making over crowdfunding projects. This paper examines a university-operated crowdfunding platform called CrowdUni. It discusses existing literature around platforms and the creation of platform ecosystems, before linking the platform to corporate entrepreneurship. It then goes on to theorize around the impact that being housed inside an existing organization may have on the functioning of the platform and resulting platform ecosystem, before presenting some initial findings.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital entrepreneurs face the liability of newness, like any other entrepreneur. However, this liability of newness is manifested differently: it is mediated by an artefact, in this case a platform. This paper examines how a digital entrepreneur mediated by a platform can build legitimacy, something hitherto thought to be embedded within a social relationship (that is, one that a digital platform may be unable to have). Based on a qualitative research design, we develop the concept of “designed legitimacy”, and we point to how trust may not be enough to overcome the liability of newness. Rather, legitimacy is needed to attract users and resources, and thus for growth and success. We further highlight the means through which a platform may come to be seen as legitimate, namely by designing with legitimacy in mind: by using symbols in design, asymmetric legitimacy building, and sequential two-stage legitimacy building. We end the paper with propositions for further study and the implications of this research for digital entrepreneurship and platforms.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Information and Organization. - : Elsevier: 24 months. - 1471-7727. ; 26:1-2, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of social networks has attracted much interest from the IS community in recent years, driven mainly by the accessibility of trace data that remain as a by-product of interactions conducted through technology-enabled platforms. Despite its rapidly growing influence, we have some concerns about the current trajectory of social network research in the IS field. Our purpose in this commentary piece is to accentuate for the new generation of social network researchers, who are au fait with mathematical techniques for analyzing massive digital datasets, how the combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches can enrich our understanding of networks. First we highlight how the social network perspective has contributed to our understanding of IS phenomena. Next we review mixed methods research in IS social network research. An agenda for future IS social network research is then presented where we suggest how qualitative approaches can best complement trace data in addressing focal social network questions. We conclude by discussing the challenges of conducting mixed method studies of digitally enabled social network.

  • Ingår i: American Behavioral Scientist. - : SAGE Publications (UK and US). - 0002-7642 .- 1552-3381. ; 59:4, s. 475-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the contemporary economy, work is increasingly becoming freelance-based while moving online. Open source software communities are rapidly becoming arenas in which individuals identify, cocreate, and realize opportunities through shared resources and expertise. Operating in a communal setting, these individuals, who we label open entrepreneurs, work and collaborate with members of their own open source community. In this article, we investigate how networked work benefits open entrepreneurs, and in particular, we focus on how open entrepreneurs are connected to other community members and how these networks affect entrepreneurial processes. Our results suggest that through different aspects of networked work, open entrepreneurs fulfill their profit motives not only in the short term but also in the long term as their networking activities facilitate the overall functioning and sustainability of the community.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For Teigland, Holmberg and Felländer, the sharing economy offers people new opportunities for value creation in the European Union. With the help of digital platforms, participants in the sharing economy may cut out traditional intermediaries resulting in a cheaper exchange of goods and services. However, a vacuum of responsibility arises in the wake of digitalization, eroding provisions of labor and consumer law. Creating trust in the digital environment is a huge challenge for the sharing economy. The Union can engage more intensively in the digitalization of European societies by promoting economic growth and enhancing the capacity for innovation. The authors consider it essential to develop a ‘digital presence’ to prevent the European perspective on democracy and freedom of expression losing out to global actors.

  • Why doesn’t downsizing deliver? A multi-level model integrating downsizing, social capital, dynamic capabilities, and firm performance
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resource Management. - : Taylor & Francis (Routledge): SSH Titles. - 1466-4399 .- 0958-5192. ; 28:7, s. 1065-1107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firms downsize to improve their bottom line results often in reactive response to negative external shocks, such as economic downturns, but even in proactive efforts to enhance organizational performance when they are financially ‘healthy’, such as restructuring. Research reveals, however, that not only does downsizing generally fail to improve a firm’s financial performance, but that it may even lead to reduced financial performance. To investigate this puzzling outcome, we build on previous research and integrate the concepts of downsizing, social capital, dynamic capabilities and performance in a multi-level model as well as discuss how social capital mediates the relationship between downsizing and dynamic capabilities. Thereafter, we develop (a) four propositions to elucidate how changes to the structural dimension of social capital due to downsizing, i.e. the removal of three key social network positions and changes to the firm’s network structure, negatively mediate the relationship between downsizing and a firm’s dynamic capabilities, and (b) two propositions incorporating internal (knowledge intensity) and external (institutional pressures) contextual variables in our model. We conclude by discussing how our research contributes to the downsizing and SHRM literature as well as the resource-based view and social capital literature before providing suggestions for future research and practitioners.

  • The digital transformation of labor: Automation, the gig economy and welfare
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through a series of studies, the overarching aim of this book is to investigate if and how the digitalization/digital transformation process causes (or may cause) the autonomy of various labor functions, and its impact in creating (or stymieing) various job opportunities on the labor market. This book also seeks to illuminate what actors/groups are mostly benefited by the digitalization/digital transformation and which actors/groups that are put at risk by it. This book takes its point of departure from a 2016 OECD report that contends that the impact digitalization has on the future of labor is ambiguous, as on the one hand it is suggested that technological change is labor-saving, but on the other hand, it is suggested that digital technologies have not created new jobs on a scale that it replaces old jobs. Another 2018 OECD report indicated that digitalization and automation as such does not pose a real risk of destroying any significant number of jobs for the foreseeable future, although tasks would by and large change significantly. This would affects welfare, as most of its revenue stems from taxation, and particularly so from the taxation on labor (directly or indirectly). For this reason, this book will set out to explore how the future technological and societal advancements impact labor conditions. The book seeks to provide an innovative, enriching and controversial take on how various aspects of the labor market can be (and are) affected the ongoing digitalization trend in a way that is not covered by extant literature. As such, this book intends to cater to a wider readership, from a general audience and students, to specialized professionals and academics wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the possible future developments of the labor market in light of an accelerating digitalization/digital transformation of society at large.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Digital Transformation of Labor (Open Access): Automation, the Gig Economy and Welfare. - London : Routledge. - 9780429317866 - 9780367330705 ; , s. 116-146
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the future of one subset of labor - corporate boards. Corporate boards make complex strategic decisions in uncertain environments, such as mergers and acquisitions, new product launches and digital transformation, all of which influence organizations and the nature of labor. However, corporate boards are increasingly struggling due to digitalization, and it is predicted that artificial intelligence (AI), and the “big data” on which AI is based, will become one of the greatest board issues in the next ten years. There is currently limited research on how corporate boards should respond to this challenge. Thus, this chapter presents preliminary results from a research project that includes a systematic literature review and expert interviews, while also touching on how AI could change the future of board work. The findings indicate that boards will need to develop two competence areas to successfully steward firms into an AI-based future: (1) guiding AI operational capability and (2) supervising AI governance capability. The Boards 4 AI Leadership Matrix is presented as a tool to facilitate the development of these competence areas. This chapter concludes that the future boards are unlikely to be replaced by automatization within the foreseeable future although AI is expected to have a fundamental impact on board work.

  • Well, that makes sense! : Investigating opportunity development in a technology start-up
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Digital technologies have profoundly reshaped many industries in the past years and we are continuously witnessing the creation of new ventures designing and serving entirely new markets. At the heart of these initiatives lies decisions to act, take risk and pursue ideas in the form of entrepreneurial opportunities. Much of the research on the journey from ideas to market has advanced from the idea that entrepreneurial agency emerges at the nexus of individuals and opportunities. In most academic work, opportunities are either assumed to be exogenous to the individual or socially constructed. Despite many valuable contributions in the field, the construct as it has traditionally been used only accounts for and explains opportunities once they have been realized. Hence, the established perspectives fall short in informing our understanding of how individuals actually act and make decisions that lead up to the identification and exploitation of opportunities that lack tangible premises. The question is therefore, how do we define and understand entrepreneurial opportunities before they have been realized and how do we make the construct empirically operable? The present study challenges and extends the conventional views of entrepreneurial opportunities by investigating what they are and how they emerge and evolve over time. By drawing upon in-depth qualitative data from a longitudinal study of the new venture creation process of a digital TV and film production firm, the thesis provides a reconceptualization of the opportunity construct. External enablers, a new venture idea, a business model and opportunity confidence are suggested as components that clarify what aspiring entrepreneurs actually mean when they talk about opportunities. Departing from these components, the thesis provides a framework describing opportunity development as an iterative process evolving through modes of sensemaking, sensegiving and sensebreaking. This framework adds to entrepreneurial process studies by extending the individual-opportunity nexus to include the actions and interactions between the entrepreneurs and the external environment in which they operate. The results lay a foundation for future theorizing and empirical inquiry into the early stages of new venture creation.

  • Sharing my way to success: A case study on developing entrepreneurial ventures using social capital in an OSS community
  • 2019

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While Open Source Software (OSS) communities provide opportunities for knowledge creation,we have a limited understanding of how entrepreneurs leverage OSS communities for their entrepreneurial ventures. Using social capital theory in a mixed methods case study, we compare entrepreneur and non-entrepreneur behaviors to investigate how entrepreneurs build social capital within an OSS community. This study shows that entrepreneurs differentiate themselves from non-entrepreneurs by focusing on cognitive and relational capital building activities, which in return makes it possible for them to leverage their social capital to influence and shape the environment in which they are operating. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurs strategically select which activities within the community to expend their limited resources on (e.g., developing code over participating in email conversations) and build their social capital more through their actions than through their words (e.g., showing their commitment to the community through code commits, bug fixes, and documentation). Given the liabilities of newness and smallness as well as other challenges faced by entrepreneurs, applying an open innovation strategy in OSS communities could be one approach where entrepreneurs, by developing and freely revealing their intellectual property to the community, share their way to success via OSSinfused entrepreneurial business ventures.
