  • Roadmap for optical tweezers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics-Photonics. - : IOP Publishing. - 2515-7647. ; 5:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical tweezers are tools made of light that enable contactless pushing, trapping, and manipulation of objects, ranging from atoms to space light sails. Since the pioneering work by Arthur Ashkin in the 1970s, optical tweezers have evolved into sophisticated instruments and have been employed in a broad range of applications in the life sciences, physics, and engineering. These include accurate force and torque measurement at the femtonewton level, microrheology of complex fluids, single micro- and nano-particle spectroscopy, single-cell analysis, and statistical-physics experiments. This roadmap provides insights into current investigations involving optical forces and optical tweezers from their theoretical foundations to designs and setups. It also offers perspectives for applications to a wide range of research fields, from biophysics to space exploration.

  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 259:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

  • Final Targeting Strategy for the SDSS-IV APOGEE-2S Survey
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 1538-3881 .- 0004-6256. ; 162:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • APOGEE is a high-resolution (R similar to 22,000), near-infrared, multi-epoch, spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way. The second generation of the APOGEE project, APOGEE-2, includes an expansion of the survey to the Southern Hemisphere called APOGEE-2S. This expansion enabled APOGEE to perform a fully panoramic mapping of all of the main regions of the Milky Way; in particular, by operating in the H band, APOGEE is uniquely able to probe the dust-hidden inner regions of the Milky Way that are best accessed from the Southern Hemisphere. In this paper we present the targeting strategy of APOGEE-2S, with special attention to documenting modifications to the original, previously published plan. The motivation for these changes is explained as well as an assessment of their effectiveness in achieving their intended scientific objective. In anticipation of this being the last paper detailing APOGEE targeting, we present an accounting of all such information complete through the end of the APOGEE-2S project; this includes several main survey programs dedicated to exploration of major stellar populations and regions of the Milky Way, as well as a full list of programs contributing to the APOGEE database through allocations of observing time by the Chilean National Time Allocation Committee and the Carnegie Institution for Science. This work was presented along with a companion article, Beaton et al. (2021), presenting the final target selection strategy adopted for APOGEE-2 in the Northern Hemisphere.

  • A comprehensive study of dura mater biomineralization : morphological, crystallographic, and immunohistochemical aspects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Reports of Morphology. - : Vinnytsia National Pyrogov Memorial Medical University. - 1818-1295 .- 2616-6194. ; 29:4, s. 50-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomineralization is a process of formation of biominerals widespread among living organisms. This phenomenon occurs in the central nervous system in normal and pathological conditions. Typically, this can manifest age-related changes, and the prevalence of biominerals increases with age. At the same time, it can be a sign of pathology-tumour growth, dystrophy, metabolic disorders, etc. This work aims to study the morphological features of the dura mater with signs of biomineralization. In this work, we examined 30 samples of the dura mater with signs of biomineralization (group I) and 30 samples without these signs (group II) obtained during autopsies in the pathology department of the Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital. For the morphological charact erist ics of the dura mat er, we used hi stologi cal, hi stochemi cal and immunohistochemical methods, as well as scanning electron microscopy. Statistical processing of the results of the immunohistochemical study was carried out in the GraphPad Prism 8.0 statistical package using parametric and non-parametric research methods. To divide the samples into groups, we relied on the histological method-staining with hematoxylin-eosin. Histochemical methods (alizarin red staining, von Koss method) confirmed the presence of calcium compounds in the studied group. Van Gieson staining visualized the collagen fibres of the dura mater, and the PAS reaction di d not reveal the presence of gl ycosaminogl ycans in the mineral deposit s. Immunohistochemical examination of the dura mater with antibodies against osteopontin revealed a significant difference between the study and control groups (p<0.001), confirming the critical role of osteopontin in the biomineralization process in this tissue. With the help of scanning electron microscopy, it was found that biominerals in the dura mater are represented by tens to hundreds of formations of various shapes (rounded, oval and irregular), varying from tens of nanometers to 50 micrometres. Their composition was analyzed using maps and spectra of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and most probably corresponded to calcium hydroxyapatite. So, the dura mater is characterized by biomineralization, manifested by the formation of microscopic calcium hydroxyapatite composites.

  • V772 Cas : an ellipsoidal HgMn star in an eclipsing binary
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 500:2, s. 2577-2589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The late B-type star V772 Cas (HD10260) was previously suspected to be a rare example of a magnetic chemically peculiar star in an eclipsing binary system. Photometric observations of this star obtained by the TESS satellite show clear eclipses with a period of 5.0137 d accompanied by a significant out-of-eclipse variation with the same period. High-resolution spectroscopy reveals V772 Cas to be an SB1 system, with the primary component rotating about a factor two slower than the orbital period and showing chemical peculiarities typical of non-magnetic HgMn chemically peculiar stars. This is only the third eclipsing HgMn star known and, owing to its brightness, is one of the very few eclipsing binaries with chemically peculiar components accessible to detailed follow-up studies. Taking advantage of the photometric and spectroscopic observations available for V772 Cas, we performed modelling of this system with the PHOEBE code. This analysis provided fundamental parameters of the components and demonstrated that the out-of-eclipse brightness variation is explained by the ellipsoidal shape of the evolved, asynchronously rotating primary. This is the first HgMn star for which such variability has been definitively identified.

  • General practitioners' deprescribing decisions in older adults with polypharmacy : a case vignette study in 31 countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Geriatrics. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1471-2318. ; 21:1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background General practitioners (GPs) should regularly review patients' medications and, if necessary, deprescribe, as inappropriate polypharmacy may harm patients' health. However, deprescribing can be challenging for physicians. This study investigates GPs' deprescribing decisions in 31 countries. Methods In this case vignette study, GPs were invited to participate in an online survey containing three clinical cases of oldest-old multimorbid patients with potentially inappropriate polypharmacy. Patients differed in terms of dependency in activities of daily living (ADL) and were presented with and without history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). For each case, we asked GPs if they would deprescribe in their usual practice. We calculated proportions of GPs who reported they would deprescribe and performed a multilevel logistic regression to examine the association between history of CVD and level of dependency on GPs' deprescribing decisions. Results Of 3,175 invited GPs, 54% responded (N = 1,706). The mean age was 50 years and 60% of respondents were female. Despite differences across GP characteristics, such as age (with older GPs being more likely to take deprescribing decisions), and across countries, overall more than 80% of GPs reported they would deprescribe the dosage of at least one medication in oldest-old patients (> 80 years) with polypharmacy irrespective of history of CVD. The odds of deprescribing was higher in patients with a higher level of dependency in ADL (OR =1.5, 95%CI 1.25 to 1.80) and absence of CVD (OR =3.04, 95%CI 2.58 to 3.57). Interpretation The majority of GPs in this study were willing to deprescribe one or more medications in oldest-old multimorbid patients with polypharmacy. Willingness was higher in patients with increased dependency in ADL and lower in patients with CVD.

  • In Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization of L-lactide on the Surface of Pristine and Aminated Silica : Synthesis and Metal Ions Extraction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Polymers. - : MDPI. - 2073-4360. ; 14:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of functional materials from food waste sources and minerals is currently of high importance. In the present work, polylactic acid (PLA)/silica composites were prepared by in situ ring-opening polymerizations of L-lactide onto the surface of pristine (Silochrom) and amine-functionalized (Silochrom-NH2) silica. The characteristics of the ring-opening polymerization onto the surface of modified and unmodified silica were identified and discussed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the polymerization of lactide onto the silica surface, and thermogravimetric analysis determined that PLA constituted 5.9% and 7.5% of the composite mass for Silochrom/PLA and Silochrom-NH2/PLA, respectively. The sorption properties of the composites with respect to Pb(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) ions were investigated, and the effect of contact time, initial metal ion concentration, and initial pH were evaluated. Silochrom-NH2/PLA composites were found to have a higher adsorption capacity than Silochrom/PLA for all chosen ions, with the highest adsorption value occurring for Pb2+ at 1.5 mmol/g (90% removal efficiency). The composites showed the highest performance in the neutral or near-neutral pH (created by distilled water or buffer pH 6.86) during the first 15 min of phase contact. The equilibrium characteristics of adsorption were found to follow the Langmuir isotherm model rather than the Freundlich and Temkin models. Perspective applications for these PLA/silicas include remediation of industrial wastewater or leaching solutions from spent lead-acid and Li-ion batteries.
