  • Pion freeze-out time in Pb plus Pb collisions at 158 AGeV/c studied via pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 48:2, s. 343-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the final state Coulomb interaction on particles produced in Pb + Pb collisions at 158AGeV/c has been investigated in the WA98 experiment through the study of the pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios measured as a function of T-m- (m)0. While the ratio for kaons shows no significant T-m dependence, the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio is enhanced at small T-m - (m)0 values with an enhancement that increases with centrality. A silicon pad detector located near the target is used to estimate the contribution of hyperon decays to the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio. The comparison of results with predictions of the RQMD model in which the Coulomb interaction has been incorporated allows to place constraints on the time of the pion freeze-out.

  • Suppression of high-p(T) neutral pion production in central Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN)=17.3 GeV relative to p+C and p+Pb collisions
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 100:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.4 GeV at midrapidity (2.3 less than or similar to eta(lab)less than or similar to 3.0) over the range 0.7 less than or similar to p(T)less than or similar to 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi(0) spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N-part less than or similar to 300), the yield of pi(0)'s with p(T)greater than or similar to 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N-coll), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N-part greater than or similar to 350, the pi(0) yield is suppressed.

  • Development of educational image databases and e-books for medical physics training
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Medical Engineering & Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-4030 .- 1350-4533. ; 27:7, s. 591-598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Medical physics education and training requires the use of extensive imaging material and specific explanations. These requirements provide an excellent background for application of e-Learning. The EU projects Consortia EMERALD and EMIT developed five volumes of such materials, now used in 65 countries. EMERALD developed e-Learning materials in three areas of medical physics (X-ray diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy). EMIT developed e-Learning materials in two further areas: ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. This paper describes the development of these e-Learning materials (consisting of e-books and educational image databases). The e-books include tasks helping studying of various equipment and methods. The text of these PDF e-books is hyperlinked with respective images. The e-books are used through the readers' own Internet browser. Each Image Database (IDB) includes a browser, which displays hundreds of images of equipment, block diagrams and graphs, image quality examples, artefacts, etc. Both the e-books and IDB are engraved on five separate CD-ROMs. Demo of these materials can be taken from www.emerald2.net.

  • Electrical resistivity and morphology of ultra thin Pt films grown by dc magnetron sputtering on SiO(2)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics Conference Series. - : IOP Science. - 1742-6596.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultra thin platinum films were grown by dc magnetron sputtering on thermally oxidized Si (100) substrates. The electrical resistance of the films was monitored in-situ during growth. The coalescence thickness was determined for various growth temperatures and found to increase from 1.3 nm for films grown at room temperature to 1.8 nm for films grown at 250 degrees C, while a continuous film was formed at a thickness of 3.9 nm at room temperature and 3.5 nm at 250 degrees C. The electrical resistivity increases with increased growth temperature, as well as the morphological grain size, and the surface roughness, measured with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM).

The room temperature electrical resistivity decreases with increased growth temperature, while the in-plain grain size and the surface roughness, measured with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), increase. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the film electrical resistance was explored at various stages during growth.

  • AURKA F31I polymorphism and breast cancer risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers: A consortium of investigators of modifiers of BRCA1/2 study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. - 1538-7755. ; 16:7, s. 1416-1421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The AURKA oncogene is associated with abnormal chromosome segregation and aneuploidy and predisposition to cancer. Amplification of AURKA has been detected at higher frequency in tumors from BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers than in sporadic breast tumors, suggesting that overexpression of AURKA and inactivation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 cooperate during tumor development and progression. The F31I polymorphism in AURKA has been associated with breast cancer risk in the homozygous state in prior studies. We evaluated whether the AURKA F31I polymorphism modifies breast cancer risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers from the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2. Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 was established to provide sufficient statistical power through increased numbers of mutation carriers to identify polymorphisms that act as modifiers of cancer risk and can refine breast cancer risk estimates in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. A total of 4,935 BRCA1 and 2,241 BRCA2 mutation carriers and 11 individuals carrying both BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations was genotyped for F31I. Overall, homozygosity for the 311 allele was not significantly associated with breast cancer risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers combined [hazard ratio (HR), 0.91; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 0.77-1.061. Similarly, no significant association was seen in BRCA1 (HR, 0.90; 95% Cl, 0.75-1.08) or BRCA2 carriers (HR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.67-1.29) or when assessing the modifying effects of either bilateral prophylactic oophorectomy or menopausal status of BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers. In summary, the F31I polymorphism in AURKA is not associated with a modified risk of breast cancer in BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers.

  • Plasma transport along discrete auroral arcs and its contribution to the ionospheric plasma convection
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 26:11, s. 3279-3293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of intense high-altitude electric field (E-field) peaks for large-scale plasma convection is investigated with the help of Cluster E-field, B-field and density data. The study covers 32 E-field events between 4 and 7 R-E geocentric distance, with E-field magnitudes in the range 500 1000 mV/m when mapped to ionospheric altitude. We focus on E-field structures above the ionosphere that are typically coupled to discrete auroral arcs and their return current region. Connected to such E-field peaks are rapid plasma flows directed along the discrete arcs in opposite directions on each side of the arc. Nearly all the E-field events occur during active times. A strong dependence on different substorm phases is found: a majority of intense E-field events appearing during substorm expansion or maximum phase are located on the night-side oval, while most recovery events occur on the dusk-to-dayside part of the oval. For most expansion and maximum phase cases, the average background plasma flow is in the sunward direction. For a majority of recovery events, the flow is in the anti-sunward direction. The net plasma flux connected to a strong E-field peak is in two thirds of the cases in the same direction as the background plasma flow. However, in only one third of the cases the strong flux caused by an E-field peak makes an important contribution to the plasma transport within the boundary plasma sheet. For a majority of events, the area covered by rapid plasma flows above discrete arcs is too small to have an effect on the global convection. This questions the role of discrete auroral arcs as major driver of plasma convection.

  • Altered regulation of the PINK1 locus: a link between Type 2 diabetes and neurodegeneration?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The FASEB Journal. - : Wiley. - 0892-6638 .- 1530-6860. ; 21:13, s. 3653-3665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mutations in PINK1 cause the mitochondrial-related neurodegenerative disease Parkinson’s. Here we investigate whether obesity, type 2 diabetes, or inactivity alters transcription from the PINK1 locus. We utilized a cDNA-array and quantitative real-time PCR for gene expression analysis of muscle from healthy volunteers following physical inactivity, and muscle and adipose tissue from nonobese or obese subjects with normal glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes. Functional studies of PINK1 were performed utilizing RNA interference in cell culture models. Following inactivity, the PINK1 locus had an opposing regulation pattern (PINK1 was down-regulated while natural antisense PINK1 was up-regulated). In type 2 diabetes skeletal muscle, all transcripts from the PINK1 locus were suppressed and gene expression correlated with diabetes status. RNA interference of PINK1 in human neuronal cell lines impaired basal glucose uptake. In adipose tissue, mitochondrial gene expression correlated with PINK1 expression although remained unaltered following siRNA knockdown of Pink1 in primary cultures of brown preadipocytes. In conclusion, regulation of the PINK1 locus, previously linked to neurodegenerative disease, is altered in obesity, type 2 diabetes and inactivity, while the combination of RNAi experiments and clinical data suggests a role for PINK1 in cell energetics rather than in mitochondrial biogenesis.

  • Influence of rhodamine 6G doping on the optical properties of TiO2 sol-gel films
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 98:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films doped with rhodamine 6G (R6G) were deposited on glass substrates by the sol-gel process. The optical properties of the films were characterized by photoacoustic, excitation, and fluorescence spectroscopies. The absorption spectra of the R6G-doped TiO2 films exhibited two well-defined absorption regions: an absorption band over 2.0 eV attributed to rhodamine 6G and a band above 3.0 eV corresponding to TiO2 absorption. While the onset of the R6G absorption band was shifted by 0.06 eV towards lower energies as the R6G doping concentration increased within the interval of 0.01-0.10 mol %, the onset to high absorption (TiO2 band) for the doped films decreased only by 0.01 eV within the same interval. In addition, the optical absorption of undoped rutile-phase bulk TiO2 was calculated and compared to the experimental results. The estimated theoretical value of rutile TiO2 sample was 3.0 eV. This theoretical result shows good agreement when compared with the experimental data of undoped TiO2 sol-gel films, as well as the undoped TiO2 film prepared by sputtering.

  • Optical and electronic characterization of the band structure of blue methylene and rhodamine 6G-doped TiO2 sol-gel nanofilms
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Microelectronics Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0026-2692. ; 36:3-6, s. 570-573
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The optical properties and the band structure of TiO2 sol-gel thin films prepared by the sot-gel process and doped with methylene blue or rhodamine were studied by absorption, excitation and emission spectroscopy. The absorption spectra show two absorption bands, around 2.3 eV and above 3.0 eV suggesting that besides the excitation bands observed in rhodamine at 2.3 eV an efficient energy transfer occurs between the TiO2 conduction band and the molecular rhodamine excited states, yielding a strong emission band at 600 nm, while for methylene blue a strong hypsochromic shift of the absorption bands is observed. The optical absorption and band gap energy for the phase rutile of TiO2 films were calculated with a LDA+U/FPLAPW method, and a comparison of this calculation with experimental data of TiO2 films prepared by undoped sol-gel and sputtering is performed.

  • Ingår i: Journal de Physique IV. - : EDP Sciences. - 1155-4339 .- 1764-7177. ; 125, s. 415-417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The optical properties of titania (TiO2) thin films prepared by the sol-gel process and doped with rhodamine 6G were studied by Photoacoustic Spectroscopy. Rhodamine 6G-doping was achieved by adding 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.05% y 0.1% mol rhodamine to a solution that contained titanium isopropoxide as precursor. Two absorption regions were distinguished in the absorption spectrum of a typical rhodamine 6G-doped TiO2 film. A shift of these bands occured as a function of rhodamine 6G-doping concentration. In addition, the optical absorption and band gap energy for rutile-phase TiO2 films were calculated employing the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. A comparison of these calculations with experimental data of TiO2 films prepared by sol-gel at room temperature was performed.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 252:15, s. 5365-5367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present spectroscopic properties of doped and undoped titanium dioxide (TiO2) as nanofilms prepared by the sol-gel process with rhodamine 6G doping and studied by photoacoustic absorption, excitation and emission spectroscopy. The absorption spectra of TiO2 thin films doped with rhodamine 6G at very low concentration during their preparation show two absorption bands, one at 2.3 eV attributed to molecular dimmer formation, which is responsible for the fluorescence quenching of the sample and the other at 3.0 eV attributed to TiO2 absorption, which subsequently yields a strong en-fission band at 600 nm. The electronic band structure and optical properties of the rutile phase of TiO2 are calculated employing a fully relativistic, full-potential, linearized, augmented plane-wave (FPLAPW) method within the local density approximation (LDA). Comparison of this calculation with experimental data for TiO2 films prepared for undoped sol-gels and by sputtering is performed.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Neurology. - 0028-3878 .- 1526-632X. ; 73:21, s. 1767-1773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The population of northern Sweden is characterized by reduced genetic diversity and a high incidence of stroke. We sought to reduce genetic variation further, using genealogic analysis in a set of nuclear families affected by stroke, and we subsequently performed a genome-wide scan to identify novel stroke susceptibility loci. METHODS: Through genealogy, 7 nuclear families with a common ancestor, connected over 8 generations, were identified. A genome-wide scan using 449 microsatellite markers was performed with subsequent haplotype analyses. RESULTS: A maximum allele-sharing lod score of 4.81 on chromosome 9q31-q33 was detected. Haplotype analysis identified a common 2.2-megabase interval in the chromosomal region in 4 of the nuclear families, where an overrepresentation of intracerebral hemorrhage was observed. CONCLUSIONS: We have identified a novel susceptibility locus for stroke. Haplotype analysis suggests that a shared genetic factor is of particular importance for intracerebral hemorrhage.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Mucosal Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1933-0219. ; 2:4, s. 351-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The film of sIgA lining the intestinal epithelium plays a role in the regulation of the commensal microflora and prevention of pathogen invasion. We show that, in the absence of intentional immunization, all sIgA in the gut is produced by B-1a B cells. We also show that B-1a B cells and sIgA derive from lineage-negative precursors found in the fetal liver and located in the spleen after birth. The splenic precursors do not generate B cells of the adaptive immune system in bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes, but efficiently replenish the cells producing the natural antibodies. Therefore, B-1a B cells with their splenic progenitors and their progeny of plasma cells fill the same function of the primordial immune system of lower vertebrates. The natural antibodies in the serum and on the intestinal epithelium may be an evolutionary ancient tool for the immediate protection against commensal and pathogenic bacteria.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Europhysics letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 0295-5075 .- 1286-4854. ; 88:2

    • Angle-resolved photoemission on underdoped La1.895Sr0.105CuO4 reveals that in the pseudogap phase, the dispersion has two branches located above and below the Fermi level with a minimum at the Fermi momentum. This is characteristic of the Bogoliubov dispersion in the superconducting state. We also observe that the superconducting and pseudogaps have the same d-wave form with the same amplitude. Our observations provide direct evidence for preformed Cooper pairs, implying that the pseudogap phase is a precursor to superconductivity.

  • Scatter correction of transmission near-infrared spectra by photon migration data: Quantitative analysis of solids
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Applied Spectroscopy. - 1943-3530. ; 59:11, s. 1381-1387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scope of this work is a new methodology to correct conventional near-infrared (NIR) data for scattering effects. The technique aims at measuring the absorption coefficient of the samples rather than the total attenuation measured in conventional NIR spectroscopy. The main advantage of this is that the absorption coefficient is independent of the path length of the light inside the sample and therefore independent of the scattering effects. The method is based on time-resolved spectroscopy and modeling of light transport by diffusion theory. This provides an independent measure of the scattering properties of the samples and therefore of the path length of light. This yields a clear advantage over other preprocessing techniques, where scattering effects are estimated and corrected for by using the shape of the measured spectrum only. Partial least squares (PLS) calibration models show that, by using the proposed evaluation scheme, the predictive ability is improved by 50% as compared to a model based on conventional NIR data alone. The method also makes it possible to predict the concentration of active substance in samples with other physical properties than the samples included in the calibration model.

  • OX1 orexin receptors activate extracellular signal-regulated kinase in Chinese hamster ovary cells via multiple mechanisms : the role of Ca2+ influx in OX1 receptor signaling
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Molecular Endocrinology. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0888-8809 .- 1944-9917. ; 20:1, s. 80-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activation of OX1 orexin receptors heterologously expressedin Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells led to a rapid, strong, and long-lasting increase in ERK phosphorylation (activation).Dissection of the signal pathways to ERK using multiple inhibitorsand dominant-negative constructs indicated involvement of Ras,protein kinase C, phosphoinositide-3-kinase, and Src. Most interestingly,Ca2+ influx appeared central for the ERK response in CHO cells, and the same was indicated in recombinant neuro-2a cells andcultured rat striatal neurons. Detailed investigations in CHOcells showed that inhibition of the receptor- and store-operatedCa2+ influx pathways could fully attenuate the response, whereasinhibition of the store-operated Ca2+ influx pathway alone orthe Ca2+ release was ineffective. If the receptor-operated pathwaywas blocked, an exogenously activated store-operated pathwaycould take its place and restore the coupling of OX1 receptorsto ERK. Further experiments suggested that Ca2+ influx, as such, may not be required for ERK phosphorylation, but that Ca2+,elevated via influx, acts as a switch enabling OX1 receptorsto couple to cascades leading to ERK phosphorylation, cAMP elevation, and phospholipase C activation. In conclusion, the data suggestthat the primary coupling of orexin receptors to Ca2+ influxallows them to couple to other signal pathways; in the absenceof coupling to Ca2+ influx, orexin receptors can act as signalintegrators by taking advantage of other Ca2+ influx pathways.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 104:3, s. 949-954
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS1) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene. High titer autoantibodies (Aabs) toward intracellular enzymes are a hallmark for APS1 and serve as diagnostic markers and predictors for disease manifestations. In this study, we aimed to identify pituitary autoantigens in patients with APS1. A pituitary cDNA expression library was screened with APS1 sera and a tudor domain containing protein 6 (TDRD6) cDNA clone was isolated. Positive immunoreactivity against in vitro translated TDRD6 fragments was shown in 42/86 (49%) APS1 patients but not in patients with other autoimmune diseases or in healthy controls. By using immunohistochemistry, sera from 3/6 APS1 patients with growth hormone (GH) deficiency showed immunostaining of a small number of guinea pig anterior pituitary cells, and 40-50% of these cells were GH-positive. No such immunostaining was seen with sera from healthy controls. The APS1 Aab-positive, GH-negative cells may represent a novel subpopulation of anterior pituitary cells. In addition, 4/6 patient sera showed staining of a fiber-plexus in the pituitary intermediate lobe recognizing enzymes of monoamine and GABA synthesis. Thus, we have identified TDRD6 as a major autoantigen in APS1 patients and shown that several sera from GH-deficient patients stain specific cell populations and nerves in the pituitary gland.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between recall memory, visual recognition memory, social communication, and the emergence of language skills was measured in a longitudinal study. Thirty typically developing Swedish children were tested at 6, 9 and 14 months. The result showed that, in combination, visual recognition memory at 6 months, deferred imitation at 9 months and turn-taking skills at 14 months could explain 41% of the variance in the infants production of communicative gestures as measured by a Swedish variant of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (CDI). In this statistical model, deferred imitation stood out as the strongest predictor.

  • Geomagnetic signatures of auroral substorms preceded by pseudobreakups
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of ten growth-phase pseudobreakups and subsequent substorms, identified in Northern Hemisphere Polar UV images during winter 1998-1999, are compared to the AE index, the unified PC indices, and GOES B field data. Comparing substorm onset (auroral breakup) with GOES data and AE and PC indices, it is found that an exact onset determination from these parameters is in most cases not possible. The three weakest substorms leave no clear signatures in the auxiliary parameters. For the other events, the AE increase appears with a time delay of 5-15 min after onset. The PC indices increase, as expected, before the AE index. The time span between PC increase and onset varies widely (-26 to 5 min). A tail dipolarization is seen in GOES data with a time delay of 2-31 min after onset. The dipolarization delay at geosynchronous orbit appears because of the GOES displacement from the tail onset region. Using the mapped GOES distance from the auroral breakup region as an estimate of GOES displacement from the breakup source region, we find that the tail dipolarization region expands in average with an azimuthal speed of 0.22 MLT min(-1) and an equatorward speed of 0.09 degrees min(-1). Pseudobreakups leave hardly any signature in AE or PC index data except in the four strongest substorm cases. In these cases, a bump appears in the PC indices during the pseudobreakup. A bump in geosynchronous B field data is found only in those two cases where GOES is located very close to the pseudobreakup tail source region.

  • Ingår i: The Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 659:1, s. L9-L12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a supernova discovery in Ks-band images from the NAOS CONICA adaptive optics (AO) system on the ESO Very Large Telescope. The images were obtained as part of a near-infrared search for highly obscured supernovae in the nuclear regions of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. SN 2004ip is located within a circumnuclear starburst at 1.4" (or 500 pc) projected distance from the K-band nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 18293-3413. The supernova luminosity and light curve are consistent with a core-collapse event suffering from a host galaxy extinction of up to about 40 mag in the V band, which is as expected for a circumnuclear starburst environment. This is the first supernova to be discovered making use of AO correction and demonstrates the potential of the current 8 m-class telescopes equipped with AO in discovering supernovae from the innermost nuclear regions of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies.

    • Toward exploiting the attractive mechanical properties of cellulose I nanoelements, a novel route is demonstrated, which combines enzymatic hydrolysis and mechanical shearing. Previously, an aggressive acid hydrolysis and sonication of cellulose I containing fibers was shown to lead to a network of weakly hydrogen-bonded rodlike cellulose elements typically with a low aspect ratio. On the other hand, high mechanical shearing resulted in longer and entangled nanoscale cellulose elements leading to stronger networks and gels. Nevertheless, a widespread use of the latter concept has been hindered because of lack of feasible methods of preparation, suggesting a combination of mild hydrolysis and shearing to disintegrate cellulose I containing fibers into high aspect ratio cellulose I nanoscale elements. In this work, mild enzymatic hydrolysis has been introduced and combined with mechanical shearing and a high-pressure homogenization, leading to a controlled fibrillation down to nanoscale and a network of long and highly entangled cellulose I elements. The resulting strong aqueous gels exhibit more than 5 orders of magnitude tunable storage modulus G' upon changing the concentration. Cryotransmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cross-polarization/magic-angle spinning (CP/MAS) C-13 NMR suggest that the cellulose I structural elements obtained are dominated by two fractions, one with lateral dimension of 5-6 nm and one with lateral dimensions of about 10-20 nm. The thicker diameter regions may act as the junction zones for the networks. The resulting material will herein be referred to as MFC (microfibrillated cellulose). Dynamical rheology showed that the aqueous suspensions behaved as gels in the whole investigated concentration range 0.125-5.9% w/w, G' ranging from 1.5 Pa to 10(5) Pa. The maximum G' was high, about 2 orders of magnitude larger than typically observed for the corresponding nonentangled low aspect ratio cellulose I gels, and G' scales with concentration with the power of approximately three. The described preparation method of MFC allows control over the final properties that opens novel applications in materials science, for example, as reinforcement in composites and as templates for surface modification.
