  • Development and implementation of guidelines in allergic rhinitis – an ARIA-GA2LEN paper.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Allergy. - : Wiley. - 1398-9995 .- 0105-4538. ; 65:10, s. 1212-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The links between asthma and rhinitis are well characterized. The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines stress the importance of these links and provide guidance for their prevention and treatment. Despite effective treatments being available, too few patients receive appropriate medical care for both diseases. Most patients with rhinitis and asthma consult primary care physicians and therefore these physicians are encouraged to understand and use ARIA guidelines. Patients should also be informed about these guidelines to raise their awareness of optimal care and increase control of the two related diseases. To apply these guidelines, clinicians and patients need to understand how and why the recommendations were made. The goal of the ARIA guidelines is to provide recommendations about the best management options for most patients in most situations. These recommendations should be based on the best available evidence. Making recommendations requires the assessment of the quality of available evidence, deciding on the balance between benefits and downsides, consideration of patients’ values and preferences, and, if applicable, resource implications. Guidelines must be updated as new management options become available or important new evidence emerges. Transparent reporting of guidelines facilitates understanding and acceptance, but implementation strategies need to be improved.

  • Intergenerational transmission of depressive symptoms - The role of gender, socioeconomic circumstances, and the accumulation of parental symptoms
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Affective Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-0327 .- 1573-2517. ; 204, s. 74-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe relationship between parental and offspring depression is well established. Evidence regarding the significance of gender, socioeconomic circumstances, and the accumulation of parental symptoms in intergenerational transmission is, however, mixed and scarce.MethodsUsing a 20% random sample of Finns born between 1986 and 1996 (n=138,559), we performed a Cox proportional hazards regression to analyze the incidence of depressive symptoms between ages 15–20 by exposure to maternal and paternal depressive symptoms earlier in life. Depressive symptoms were inferred from antidepressantpurchases and/or a diagnosis of depression at outpatient or inpatient health services.ResultsExposure to maternal depressive symptoms posed an equal risk for girls and boys (hazard ratio, HR, 2.09 vs. 2.28 respectively, p=0.077), whereas the effect of paternal depressive symptoms was weaker for girls (HR 1.77 vs. 2.22, p<0.001). Parental socioeconomic status neither confounded nor moderated these effects. Dual exposure to both maternal and paternal depressive symptoms posed a larger risk than single exposure, and children exposed recurrently at ages 0–5 and 9–14 faced an elevated risk compared with those exposed at only one period.LimitationsSince depressive symptoms were inferred from prescription purchases and treatment records, we were unable to observe untreated depression or to determine the underlying condition the antidepressants were prescribed for.ConclusionsOur results support the idea that maternal depression affects both genders equally, whereas paternal depression affects girls less than boys. We show that parental depression and low socioeconomic status are mainly independent risk factors of adolescent depressive symptoms and do not cause an interactive effect.

  • Stacking fault energetics of alpha- and gamma-cerium investigated with ab initio calculations
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950. ; 93:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At ambient pressure the element cerium shows a metastable (t(1/2) similar to 40 years) double-hexagonal close-packed beta phase that is positioned between two cubic phases, gamma and alpha. With modest pressure the beta phase can be suppressed, and a volume contraction (17%) occurs between the gamma and the alpha phases as the temperature is varied. This phenomenon has been linked to subtle alterations in the 4f band. In order to rationalize the presence of the metastable beta phase, and its position in the phase diagram, we have computed the stacking fault formation energies of the cubic phases of cerium using an axial interaction model. This model links the total energy differences between hexagonal closed-packed stacking sequences and stacking fault energetics. Total energies are calculated by density functional theory and by dynamical mean-field theory merged with density functional theory. It is found that there is a large difference in the stacking fault energies between the alpha and the gamma phase. The beta-phase energy is nearly degenerate with the gamma phase, consistent with previous third-law calorimetry results, and dislocation dynamics explain the pressure and temperature hysteretic effects.

  • Surface electronic structures of the Eu- and Ca-induced so-called Si(111)-(5×1) reconstructions
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 74:23, s. 235311-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the electronic structures of the so-called Eu- and Ca-induced Si(111)-(5×1) surfaces by using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The LEED patterns of these surfaces indicate that the periodicities of both surfaces are actually (5×4). In the ARPES study, seven surface states were observed on each (5×4) reconstruction. Of these surface states, the dispersions of five of them show good agreement with those of the Eu- and Ca-induced (3×2) honeycomb-chain-channel (HCC) surfaces and the dispersions of the two other states agree well with those of the Eu- and Ca-induced (2×1) Seiwatz surfaces along the [1̅ 10] direction—i.e., the direction parallel to the adsorbate chain. Taking the dispersion behavior of these surface states into account, we conclude that the interaction between the nearest-neighbor HCC chain and Seiwatz chain is quite small and that the electronic structure of one chain hardly affects the electronic structure of its neighboring chain. We also discuss the atomic structure of the Eu- and Ca-induced Si(111)-(5×1) reconstructions based on their electronic structures.

  • Comparative studies of alkylating and N-heterocyclic compounds on different genetic endpoints with special emphasis on amplification of minisatellite sequences
  • 1992
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Several mutational events are involved in the multistage process of cancer. Genetic instability of tumor DNA is shown in a variety of genetic changes such as point mutations, chromosomal aberrations, aneuploidy, DNA amplification and somatic recombination. Highly repetitive sequences, minisatellite DNA, have been changed in tumors, most probably by DNA amplification. To better predict carcinogens all these genetic changes should be considered. The present investigation has focused on the study of genetic changes especially DNA amplification with the use of genetic instability of minisatellites. DNA alterations in human bladder tumors were examined. A new in vitro test system was developed to study DNA amplification. In this study DNA fingerprint analysis, with the use of minisatellite DNA, of 22 bladder tumor patients is performed. DNA alterations were determined in approximately 50% of the examined bladder tumor patients. In eight of these ten patients a loss of bands was demonstrated. To study DNA amplifications an in vitro test system was developed. A haploid yeast strain was constructed, the TR(MS1)-1, which carries a chromosomal integration of the human minisatellite sequence MSI. The spontaneous frequency of new MSI length alleles was approximately 30%. Both amplifications and deamplifications can be detected in this system without selection. A plasmid pop-out frequency can also be meausured.A number of model compounds was used during this study, namely three alkylating agents, a nongenotoxic carcinogen and several nitrogen heterocyclic compounds. To compare genotoxicity and the mechanism of action, these compounds are tested in several in vitro test systems. Ethylene oxide (EO) was demonstrated to be more potent than propylene oxide (PO) in several of the measured endpoints in yeast. EO induced changes in the amplification spectrum of new MSI length alleles in TR(MS1)-1 while PO increased the plasmid pop-out frequency. 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo(p)dioxin (TCDD) was also seen to induce changes in the amplification spectrum of new MSI length alleles, thus demonstrating an effect of TCDD at the DNA level. Among the N-heterocyclic compounds, camptothecin increased the plasmid pop-out frequency in TR(MS1)-1. Two tryptophan photoproducts, "284" and "312", were shown to bind to the A A-receptor. They were demonstrated to be nongenotoxic and antimutagenic in bacteria and slightly genotoxic in yeast. These two compounds are antimutagenic by inhibiting the cytochrome P450IA1. "284" increased cell survival or cell division. These two tryptophan photoproducts, ”284" and "312", are postulated to be biological signal substances by being the endogenous ligand to the Ah -receptor.

  • Probing roto-translational diffusion of small anisotropic colloidal particles with a bright-field microscope
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal E. Soft Matter. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1292-8941 .- 1292-895X. ; 44:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: Soft and biological materials are often composed of elementary constituents exhibiting an incessant roto-translational motion at the microscopic scale. Tracking this motion with a bright-field microscope becomes increasingly challenging when the particle size becomes smaller than the microscope resolution, a case which is frequently encountered. Here we demonstrate squared-gradient differential dynamic microscopy (SG-DDM) as a tool to successfully use bright-field microscopy to extract the roto-translational dynamics of small anisotropic colloidal particles, whose rotational motion cannot be tracked accurately in direct space. We provide analytical justification and experimental demonstration of the method by successful application to an aqueous suspension of peanut-shaped particles.

  • Non-Thermal Absorption and Quantum Efficiency of SINIS Bolometer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. - 1558-2515 .- 1051-8223. ; 31:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study mechanisms of absorption in two essentially different types of superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) bolometers with absorber directly placed on Si wafer and with absorber suspended above the substrate. The figure of merit for quantum photon absorption is quantum efficiency equal to the number of detected electrons for one photon. The efficiency of absorption is dramatically dependent on phonon losses to substrate and electrodes, and electron energy losses to electrodes through tunnel junctions. The maximum quantum efficiency can approach n = hf/kT = 160 at f = 350 GHz T = 0.1 K, and current responsivity dI/dP = e/kT in quantum gain bolometer case, contrary to photon counter mode with quantum efficiency of n = 1 and responsivity dI/dP = e/hf. In experiments, we approach intrinsic quantum efficiency up to n = 80 electrons per photon in bolometer with suspended absorber, contrary to quantum efficiency of about one for absorber on the substrate. In the case of suspended Cu and Pd absorber, Kapitsa resistance protect from power leak to Al electrodes.

  • Integrated analysis of transcriptome and lipid profiling reveals the co-influences of inositol-choline and Snf1 in controlling lipid biosynthesis in yeast
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Molecular Genetics and Genomics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-4615 .- 1617-4623. ; 287:7, s. 541-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae many genes involved in lipid biosynthesis are transcriptionally controlled by inositol-choline and the protein kinase Snf1. Here we undertook a global study on how inositol-choline and Snf1 interact in controlling lipid metabolism in yeast. Using both a reference strain (CEN.PK113-7D) and a snf1 Delta strain cultured at different nutrient limitations (carbon and nitrogen), at a fixed specific growth rate of 0.1 h(-1), and at different inositol choline concentrations, we quantified the expression of genes involved in lipid biosynthesis and the fluxes towards the different lipid components. Through integrated analysis of the transcriptome, the lipid profiling and the fluxome, it was possible to obtain a high quality, large-scale dataset that could be used to identify correlations and associations between the different components. At the transcription level, Snf1 and inositol-choline interact either directly through the main phospholipid-involving transcription factors (i.e. Ino2, Ino4, and Opi1) or through other transcription factors e.g. Gis1, Mga2, and Hac1. However, there seems to be flux regulation at the enzyme levels of several lipid involving enzymes. The analysis showed the strength of using both transcriptome and lipid profiling analysis for mapping the co-influence of inositol-choline and Snf1 on phospholipid metabolism.

  • Temperature responses of Rubisco from Paniceae grasses provide opportunities for improving C3 photosynthesis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Plants. - 2055-0278. ; 2:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enhancing the catalytic properties of the CO2-fixing enzyme Rubisco is a target for improving agricultural crop productivity. Here, we reveal extensive diversity in the kinetic response between 10 and 37 °C by Rubisco from C3 and C4 species within the grass tribe Paniceae. The CO2 fixation rate (kccat) for Rubisco from the C4 grasses with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) phosphate malic enzyme (NADP-ME) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK) photosynthetic pathways was twofold greater than the kccat of Rubisco from NAD-ME species across all temperatures. The declining response of CO2/O2 specificity with increasing temperature was less pronounced for PCK and NADP-ME Rubisco, which would be advantageous in warmer climates relative to the NAD-ME grasses. Modelled variation in the temperature kinetics of Paniceae C3 Rubisco and PCK Rubisco differentially stimulated C3 photosynthesis relative to tobacco above and below 25 °C under current and elevated CO2. Amino acid substitutions in the large subunit that could account for the catalytic variation among Paniceae Rubisco are identified; however, incompatibilities with Paniceae Rubisco biogenesis in tobacco hindered their mutagenic testing by chloroplast transformation. Circumventing these bioengineering limitations is critical to tailoring the properties of crop Rubisco to suit future climates.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2016 10th International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering, CPE-POWERENG 2016. - 9781467372930 ; , s. 478-483
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy efficiency of train operations is a critical issue for the electrical railway transportation, considering that one of the main benefits of this transportation mode is the lower environmental impact. A possible technology which decreases energy consumption is the reuse of the recovered energy from the braking system. Although have been made significant efforts to find efficient solutions in terms of driving strategies, timetable optimization etc, the potential of energy recovery from the braking system is still unexplored. In this paper, we consider the problem of joint optimization of multiple train speed profiles, which operate in the same power section, in order to increase the overall energy recovered from the braking system. We propose a Markov Decision Process formulation, which models the continuous space movements of the trains as stochastic transitions on discrete states, determined by train operations and electrical properties of the electrical network.

  • Evaluation of Stress Distribution in Tooth-Supported Fixed Dental Prostheses Made of Translucent Zirconia with Variations in Framework Designs : A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Prosthodontics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1059-941X .- 1532-849X. ; 29:4, s. 315-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose To evaluate the influence of the framework designs on the stress distribution within tooth-supported partially veneered fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) made of translucent zirconia under simulated loads using a three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA). Material and Methods For a linear 3D-FEA, simplified 3D solid models of prepared abutment teeth (first premolar and first molar) with different 3-unit FDPs were created. The models with different FDP designs-monolithic zirconia (control); semi-monolithic zirconia with 0.3 mm veneer thickness (SM0.3); semi-monolithic zirconia with 0.5 mm veneer thickness (SM0.5); semi-monolithic zirconia with 0.5 mm veneer thickness supported with cap design (SMC), and semi-monolithic zirconia with 0.5 mm veneer thickness supported with wave design (SMW)-were analyzed using 3D-FEA. The elastic properties of the components (bone, dentine, cement, translucent zirconia, and veneering porcelain) were obtained from the published data for FEA. Simulated static loading forces (300 N) were applied at 10 degrees oblique direction over six points in the occlusal surfaces of the FDPs. Maximum principal stress, shear stress, and safety factor were calculated and analyzed among the different models. Results Semi-monolithic with cap design showed the smallest maximum principal stress levels in the veneering porcelain compared to all other models (SM0.3, SM0.5, SMW). The SM0.3 had lower maximum principal stress levels in the veneering porcelain compared to SM0.5. Regarding stresses in the zirconia framework, all models had comparable results in maximum principal tensile stresses, except SMW had a lower value. Maximum principal stress levels were located in the veneer component of SM0.3, SM0.5, and SMW, whereas, such levels were observed in the cervical areas of the zirconia frameworks of SMC and control. The SM0.3 had the highest maximum shear stress levels at the zirconia-veneer interface, while SMW had the lowest shear values. The 3D-FEA models with different FDP designs showed different minimum safety factor levels. Conclusions Framework and veneer designs play a significant role in the stress distribution of the partially veneered zirconia FDPs under loading. The FDPs with zirconia frameworks with cap design minimize the maximum principal tensile stress in the veneering porcelain. The FDPs with 0.3-mm-veneering porcelain show low maximum principal tensile stress in the veneering porcelain, but highest maximum shear stress at the zirconia-veneer interface. The FDPs with wave design of zirconia frameworks minimize the maximum shear stress considerably.

  • Formal models of bounded rationality for autonomous agents
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A key challenge when developing intelligent agents is to instill behavior into computing systems that can be considered as intelligent from a social and "common-sense" perspective. Such behavior requires agents to diverge from typical decision-making algorithms that strive to maximize simple, often one-dimensional metrics. A striking parallel to this research problem can be found in the design of formal models of human decision-making in micro-economic theory. Traditionally, mathematical models of human decision-making also reflect the ambition to maximize a utility or preference function, which economists refer to as the rational man paradigm. However, evidence suggest that these models are flawed, not only because human decision-making is subject to systematic fallacies, but also because the models depend on assumptions that do not hold in reality. Consequently, the research domain of formally modeling bounded rationality emerged, which attempts to account for these shortcomings. By drawing from these developments in micro-economic theory, this thesis explores different novel approaches to instill common sense-based, socially intelligent decision-making abilities into autonomous agents. In particular, the works collected in this thesis i) present formal models of boundedly altruistic decision-making and consensus-finding, ii) introduce a library for implementing web-based autonomous agents, iii) explore the effects of explanations on the human intelligibility of machine concessions in economic games, and iv) analyze economic rationality as a non-monotonic reasoning property in the context of abstract argumentation.

  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Internet Technology. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 1533-5399 .- 1557-6051. ; 22:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of autonomous agents has a long tradition in the Multiagent Systems and the Semantic Web communities, with applications ranging from automating business processes to personal assistants. More recently, the Web of Things (WoT), which is an extension of the Internet of Things (IoT) with metadata expressed in Web standards, and its community provide further motivation for pushing the autonomous agents research agenda forward. Although representing and reasoning about norms, policies and preferences is crucial to ensuring that autonomous agents act in a manner that satisfies stakeholder requirements, normative concepts, policies and preferences have yet to be considered as first-class abstractions in Web-based multiagent systems. Towards this end, this paper motivates the need for alignment and joint research across the Multiagent Systems, Semantic Web, and WoT communities, introduces a conceptual framework for governance of autonomous agents on the Web, and identifies several research challenges and opportunities.

  • Load-Bearing Capacity of Monolithic Zirconia Fixed Dental Prostheses Fabricated with Different Connector Designs and Embrasure Shaping Methods
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Prosthodontics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1059-941X .- 1532-849X. ; 28:1, s. 64-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim> To investigate the load-bearing capacity and failure mode of monolithic zirconia fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated with different connector designs and embrasure shaping methods. Materials and methods> Seventy 4-unit zirconia FDPs (with 2 premolar pontics) were fabricated and divided into 7 groups (n = 10) according to the different connector designs gained by using different embrasure shaping methods. The groups were as follows: monolithic FDPs fabricated with sharp embrasures, monolithic FDPs fabricated with blunt embrasures, monolithic FDPs fabricated with blunt embrasures and no occlusal embrasures, 2 groups of monolithic FDPs fabricated with blunt embrasures and interproximal separations made with diamond discs at the soft stage and at the fully sintered stage, and monolithic FDPs fabricated with blunt embrasures and interproximal separation accentuated by localized porcelain build-up. A final group of fully veneered traditional zirconia FDPs to be used as a control group were fabricated with default milling settings. The FDPs were artificially aged and loaded to fracture. Load to fracture and failure modes were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, Tukey post-hoc test, and Fisher exact test (α = 0.05). Results> The FDPs fabricated with interproximal porcelain separation showed significantly the highest load to fracture (1038 N ± 82) of all groups (p < 0.001), with no significant difference compared to the FDPs with no occlusal embrasures (934 N ± 175) (p ˃ 0.29). The FDPs fabricated with blunt embrasures showed significantly higher load to fracture (873 N ± 115) compared to the FDPs in control group (689 N ± 75) and the FDPs with sharp embrasures (417 N ± 87) (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between the FDPs with sharp embrasures (417 N ± 87) and the FDPs with interproximal discs separations (467 N ± 94; p ˃ 0.23). Failure mode of the FDPs fabricated with sharp embrasures and interproximal discs separations differed significantly compared to the FDPs in the other groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions> Sharp embrasures and interproximal separations made with diamond discs significantly decrease the load-bearing capacity of monolithic zirconia FDPs compared to FDPs made with blunt embrasures. Blunt embrasures in combination with localized porcelain build-up produce FDPs with high load-bearing capacity in relation to loads that might be expected under clinical use. • Precipitation variability and its relation to climate anomalies in the Bolivian Altiplano
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Climatology. - : Wiley. - 0899-8418 .- 1097-0088.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Precipitation variability over the Bolivian Altiplano is strongly affected by local climate and temporal variation of large-scale atmospheric flow. Precipitation is the main water source for drinking water and agricultural production. For this reason, a better understanding of precipitation variability and its relation with climate phenomena can provide important information for forecasting of droughts and floods, disaster risk reduction, and improvement of water management. We present results of an analysis of the austral summer precipitation variability at six locations in the Bolivian Altiplano and connections to climate variability. For this purpose, the variability of the summer precipitation was related to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Antarctic Meridional Mode (AMM), and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). A statistically significant correlation between climate indices and precipitation was found in various spectral frequencies and power. The variability of the summer precipitation was associated with the climate indices using a band-pass filter, representing the signal at a particular period of time. For the ENSO, band-pass filtering was applied for Niño3.4 and Niño3 at band ~2–7 years, for NAO band ~5–8 years, and for AMM band ~10–13 years. The variability of summer precipitation was related to all studied climate modes by negative relationships. The physical explanation for this is first the dry air transported from the Pacific Ocean to the Altiplano during El Niño events. Second, NAO and ENSO are dynamically linked through teleconnections. Third, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) shifts are northwards during the warm phases of AMM. These physical mechanisms lead to a reduced austral summer precipitation associated with positive phases of the ENSO, NAO, and AMM. The results can be used to better forecast precipitation in the Bolivian Altiplano and provide support for the development of policies to improve climate resilience and risk management of water supply.

  • An Inquiry into the Re-Creative Workings of the Unheimliche in Interior Architecture
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Often left unspecified in architectural discourse, the unheimliche (or the uncanny) emerges as a puzzling concept that operates in various disciplines throughout history and geography. The unheimliche concept continuously moves between disciplines, minds, periods and places. In so doing, the workings of the unheimliche curiously articulate them as allied together.Four interrelated angles scanned how these transitory shifts of the unheimliche occurred in time and space.(1) The unheimliche as a discourse featured a series of unheimliche themes written by established authors who incite the reader to unsettlement and re-thinking;(2) The unheimliche as an experience surveyed how beholders received and endured an unsettling endeavour that ultimately energized them.(3) The unheimliche as a design approach devised an altered status of the designer and the discipline by investigating the faculties of the un-preferred and not knowing.(4) The unheimliche as a pedagogic approach relocated affective issues that reside within the mind and memory of learners as issued in a series of research design studios. Whereas the first angle approached the unheimliche as a theme and discourse, the latter three perspectives explored the unheimliche as a strategy in interior architecture. By implementing the unheimliche experience as a resource for architectural design and education, I found that this experience productively deformed the beholder’s perception of time. It also affected the status of the design discipline and the resources of the designer for architectural design and education. Furthermore it strengthened the position of the learner in becoming a co-researcher and co-creator in a complex network as propelled by events, institutional forces, objects and human desires. The re-creative workings of the unheimliche advocates interior architecture as an in-between discipline aimed at conceiving places of delight but also learning from abject realities that occur in everyday places. In so doing, the unheimliche in interior architecture does not create novelty but rather amplifies the innate powers of the existent, giving way to a disturbing yet manifold experience: the unheimliche becomes a re-creation of the pre-existent, provoking a re-thinking of the design discipline and all actors concerned.

  • Runehamar Tunnel Fire Tests
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Five large-scale fire tests, including one pool fire test and four HGV mock-up fire tests, were carried out in the Runehamar tunnel in Norway in year 2003. Detailed information about these tests is presented. In addition, previous work on these tests and new analyses are presented in this report. Heat release rate, fire growth rate, gas temperature, flame length, radiation, fire spread, gas production, ventilation, backside wall temperature, pulsation and backlayering are investigated thoroughly. Simple theoretical models are developed to estimate and predict these parameters. The correlations developed can be used by engineers working on fire safety in tunnels.
