  • Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: eLife. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions.

  • Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents' growth and development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 615:7954, s. 874-883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

  • Repositioning of the global epicentre of non-optimal cholesterol
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 582:7810, s. 73-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High blood cholesterol is typically considered a feature of wealthy western countries1,2. However, dietary and behavioural determinants of blood cholesterol are changing rapidly throughout the world3 and countries are using lipid-lowering medications at varying rates. These changes can have distinct effects on the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, which have different effects on human health4,5. However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-based studies that measured blood lipids in 102.6 million individuals aged 18 years and older to estimate trends from 1980 to 2018 in mean total, non-HDL and HDL cholesterol levels for 200 countries. Globally, there was little change in total or non-HDL cholesterol from 1980 to 2018. This was a net effect of increases in low- and middle-income countries, especially in east and southeast Asia, and decreases in high-income western countries, especially those in northwestern Europe, and in central and eastern Europe. As a result, countries with the highest level of non-HDL cholesterol—which is a marker of cardiovascular risk—changed from those in western Europe such as Belgium, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Malta in 1980 to those in Asia and the Pacific, such as Tokelau, Malaysia, The Philippines and Thailand. In 2017, high non-HDL cholesterol was responsible for an estimated 3.9 million (95% credible interval 3.7 million–4.2 million) worldwide deaths, half of which occurred in east, southeast and south Asia. The global repositioning of lipid-related risk, with non-optimal cholesterol shifting from a distinct feature of high-income countries in northwestern Europe, north America and Australasia to one that affects countries in east and southeast Asia and Oceania should motivate the use of population-based policies and personal interventions to improve nutrition and enhance access to treatment throughout the world.

  • Expanding the mutation and phenotype spectrum of MYH3-associated skeletal disorders
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NPJ genomic medicine. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2056-7944. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pathogenic variants in MYH3 cause distal arthrogryposis type 2A and type 2B3 as well as contractures, pterygia and spondylocarpotarsal fusion syndromes types 1A and 1B. These disorders are ultra-rare and their natural course and phenotypic variability are not well described. In this study, we summarize the clinical features and genetic findings of 17 patients from 10 unrelated families with vertebral malformations caused by dominant or recessive pathogenic variants in MYH3. Twelve novel pathogenic variants in MYH3 (NM_002470.4) were identified: three of them were de novo or inherited in autosomal dominant way and nine were inherited in autosomal recessive way. The patients had vertebral segmentation anomalies accompanied with variable joint contractures, short stature and dysmorphic facial features. There was a significant phenotypic overlap between dominant and recessive MYH3-associated conditions regarding the degree of short stature as well as the number of vertebral fusions. All monoallelic variants caused significantly decreased SMAD3 phosphorylation, which is consistent with the previously proposed pathogenic mechanism of impaired canonical TGF-β signaling. Most of the biallelic variants were predicted to be protein-truncating, while one missense variant c.4244T>G,p.(Leu1415Arg), which was inherited in an autosomal recessive way, was found to alter the phosphorylation level of p38, suggesting an inhibition of the non-canonical pathway of TGF-β signaling. In conclusion, the identification of 12 novel pathogenic variants and overlapping phenotypes in 17 affected individuals from 10 unrelated families expands the mutation and phenotype spectrum of MYH3-associated skeletal disorders. We show that disturbances of canonical or non-canonical TGF-β signaling pathways are involved in pathogenesis of MYH3-associated skeletal fusion (MASF) syndrome.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Astrophysics. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-4048 .- 2214-4056. ; 34, s. 49-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The standard Λ Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model provides a good description of a wide range of astrophysical and cosmological data. However, there are a few big open questions that make the standard model look like an approximation to a more realistic scenario yet to be found. In this paper, we list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant H0, the σ8–S8 tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the 5.0σ tension between the Planck CMB estimate of the Hubble constant H0 and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the H0 evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the Planck CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density Ωm, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure (σ8,fσ8). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the H0–S8 tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals. Finally, we give an overview of upgraded experiments and next-generation space missions and facilities on Earth that will be of crucial importance to address all these open questions.

  • Non-destructive monitoring of forming quality of self-piercing riveting via a lightweight deep learning
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-piercing riveting (SPR) has been widely used in automobile body jointing. However, the riveting process is prone to various forming quality failures, such as empty riveting, repeated riveting, substrate cracking, and other riveting defects. This paper combines deep learning algorithms to achieve non-contact monitoring of SPR forming quality. And a lightweight convolutional neural network with higher accuracy and less computational effort is designed. The ablation and comparative experiments results show that the lightweight convolutional neural network proposed in this paper achieves improved accuracy and reduced computational complexity. Compared with the original algorithm, the algorithm's accuracy in this paper is increased by 4.5[Formula: see text], and the recall is increased by 1.4[Formula: see text]. In addition, the amount of redundant parameters is reduced by 86.5[Formula: see text], and the amount of computation is reduced by 47.33[Formula: see text]. This method can effectively overcome the limitations of low efficiency, high work intensity, and easy leakage of manual visual inspection methods and provide a more efficient solution for monitoring the quality of SPR forming quality. © 2023. • The first human induced pluripotent stem cell line of Kashin–Beck disease reveals involvement of heparan sulfate proteoglycan biosynthesis and PPAR pathway
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The FEBS Journal. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1742-464X .- 1742-4658. ; 289:1, s. 279-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is an endemic osteochondropathy. Due to a lack of suitable animal or cellular disease models, the research progress on KBD has been limited. Our goal was to establish the first disease-specific human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) cellular disease model of KBD, and to explore its etiology and pathogenesis exploiting transcriptome sequencing.METHODS: HiPSCs were reprogrammed from dermal fibroblasts of two KBD and one healthy control donors via integration-free vectors. Subsequently, hiPSCs were differentiated into chondrocytes through three-week culture. Gene expression profiles in KBD, normal primary chondrocytes and hiPSC-derived chondrocytes were defined by RNA sequencing. A Venn diagram was constructed to show the number of shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between KBD and normal. Gene oncology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes annotations were performed, and six DEGs were further validated in other individuals by real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR).RESULTS: KBD cellular disease models were successfully established by generation of hiPSC lines. Seventeen consistent and significant DEGs present in all compared groups (KBD and normal) were identified. RT-qPCR validation gave consistent results with the sequencing data. Glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis-heparan sulfate/heparin, PPAR signaling pathway and cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) pathways were identified to be significantly altered in KBD.CONCLUSION: Differentiated chondrocytes deriving from KBD-origin hiPSCs provide the first cellular disease model for etiological studies of KBD. This study also provides new sights into the pathogenesis and etiology of KBD and is likely to inform the development of targeted therapeutics for its treatment.

  • ATAC-seq reveals the roles of chromatin accessibility in the chondrocytes of Kashin-Beck disease compared with primary osteoarthritis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Genetics. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-8021. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the roles of accessible chromatin in understanding the different pathogeneses between Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and primary osteoarthritis (OA).Methods: Articular cartilages of KBD and OA patients were collected, and after tissue digestion, primary chondrocytes were cultured in vitro. Assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq) was performed to compare the accessible chromatin differences of chondrocytes between KBD and OA groups. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were executed for the promoter genes. Then, the IntAct online database was used to generate networks of significant genes. Finally, we overlapped the analysis of differentially accessible region (DAR)-associated genes and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) obtained from whole-genomic microarray. Results: We obtained 2,751 total DARs, which contained 1,985 loss and 856 gain DARs and belonged to 11 location distributions. We obtained 218 motifs associated with loss DARs, 71 motifs associated with gain DARs, 30 motif enrichments of loss DARs, and 30 motif enrichments of gain DARs. In total, 1,749 genes are associated with loss DARs, and 826 genes are associated with gain DARs. Among them, 210 promoter genes are associated with loss DARs, and 112 promoter genes are associated with gain DARs. We obtained 15 terms of GO enrichment and 5 terms of KEGG pathway enrichment from loss DAR promoter genes, and 15 terms of GO enrichment and 3 terms of KEGG pathway enrichment from gain DAR promoter genes. We obtained CAPN6 and other 2 overlap genes from loss DARs-vs-down DEGs, AMOTL1 from gain DARs-vs-down DEGs, EBF3 and other 12 overlap genes from loss DARs-vs-up DEGs, and ADARB1 and other 10 overlap genes from 101 gain DARs-vs-up DEGs. These overlap genes were built into 4 gene interaction networks. Conclusion: FGF7, GPD1L, NFIB, RUNX2, and VCAM1 were the overlapped genes from the DAR-associated genes and DEGs. These genes were associated with the abnormal chondrocyte function, which may play crucial roles in different processes between KBD and OA in the way of accessible chromatin.

  • Characterization and formation mechanism of non-metallic inclusions in single bcc-phase high entropy alloy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Characterization. - : Elsevier BV. - 1044-5803 .- 1873-4189. ; 205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work aims to provide a fundamental study of inclusion characteristics in the single bcc-phase high entropy alloy (HEA), Mn-rich and Al-contained multicomponent system (Al-Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni) was selected as the prototype alloy in this study. According to the differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements, the solidus (TS) and liquidus (TL) temperatures of this alloy were in the range of 1225–1228 °C (1226 ± 2 °C) and 1268–1271 °C (1270 ± 2 °C), respectively. Non-metallic inclusions were investigated in a two-dimensional (2D) cross-section method as well as extracted by a three-dimensional (3D) electrolytic extraction method. It was found that AlN was the dominant inclusion phase, also a small amount of Al2O3 inclusions were observed. They formed in the liquid alloy and mostly presented as Al2O3-AlN agglomerates, where the size range of the AlN inclusions was larger than that of Al2O3. The theoretical calculation showed that AlN inclusion has a higher coagulation coefficient and collision rate than those of Al2O3 inclusions, which agrees well with the experimental observations. The inclusion characteristics of Al2O3 and AlN were closely related to the relative contents of O and N in the presence of high Al content in the alloy. The impurity elements of N and O were the key issues in controling the stable inclusion phase in high entropic alloy.

  • Time Series Recovery Using Adjacent Channel Data Based on LSTM: A Case Study of Subway Vibrations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-3417. ; 12:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-sensor technology has been widely applied in the condition monitoring of rail transit. In practice, the data of some channels in the high channel counts are often abnormal or lost due to the abnormality and damage of the sensors, thus resulting in a large amount of data waste. A method for the data recovery of lost channels by using adjacent channel data is proposed to solve this problem. Based on the LSTM network algorithm, a data recovery model is established based on the “sequence-to-sequence” regression analysis of adjacent channel data. Taking the measured vibration data of a subway as an example, the network is trained with multi-channel measured data to recover the lost channel data of time-series characteristics. The results show that this multi-channel data recovery model is feasible, and the accuracy is up to 98%. This method can also further reduce the number of channels that need to be collected.

    • We present the first large-scale study that demonstrates how ages can be determined for large samples of stars through Galactic chemical evolution. Previous studies found that the elemental abundances of a star correlate directly with its age and metallicity. Using this knowledge, we derive ages for 214 577 stars in GALAH DR3 using only overall metallicities and chemical abundances. Stellar ages are estimated via the machine learning algorithm XGBoost for stars belonging to the Milky Way disc with metallicities in the range -1 < [Fe/H] < 0.5, using main-sequence turn-off stars as our training set. We find that stellar ages for the bulk of GALAH DR3 are precise to 1-2 Gyr using this method. With these ages, we replicate many recent results on the age-kinematic trends of the nearby disc, including the solar neighbourhood's age-velocity dispersion relationship and the larger global velocity dispersion relations of the disc found using Gaia and GALAH. These results show that chemical abundance variations at a given birth radius are small, and that strong chemical tagging of stars directly to birth clusters may prove difficult with our current elemental abundance precision. Our results highlight the need to measure abundances for as many nucleosynthetic production sites as possible in order to estimate reliable ages from chemistry. Our methods open a new door into studies of the kinematic structure and evolution of the disc, as ages may potentially be estimated to a precision of 1-2 Gyr for a large fraction of stars in existing spectroscopic surveys.

  • 3D genomics across the tree of life reveals condensin II as a determinant of architecture type
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 372:6545, s. 984-989
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated genome folding across the eukaryotic tree of life. We find two types of three-dimensional (3D) genome architectures at the chromosome scale. Each type appears and disappears repeatedly during eukaryotic evolution. The type of genome architecture that an organism exhibits correlates with the absence of condensin II subunits. Moreover, condensin II depletion converts the architecture of the human genome to a state resembling that seen in organisms such as fungi or mosquitoes. In this state, centromeres cluster together at nucleoli, and heterochromatin domains merge. We propose a physical model in which lengthwise compaction of chromosomes by condensin II during mitosis determines chromosome-scale genome architecture, with effects that are retained during the subsequent interphase. This mechanism likely has been conserved since the last common ancestor of all eukaryotes.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The pandemic presented unique challenges for individuals with autoimmune and rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) due to their underlying condition, the effects of immunosuppressive treatments, and increased vaccine hesitancy. Objectives: The COVID-19 vaccination in autoimmune diseases (COVAD) study, a series of ongoing, patient self-reported surveys were conceived with the vision of being a unique tool to gather patient perspectives on AIRDs. It involved a multinational, multicenter collaborative effort amidst a global lockdown. Methods: Leveraging social media as a research tool, COVAD collected data using validated patient-reported outcomes (PROs). The study, comprising a core team, steering committee, and global collaborators, facilitated data collection and analysis. A pilot-tested, validated survey, featuring questions regarding COVID-19 infection, vaccination and outcomes, patient demographics, and PROs was circulated to patients with AIRDs and healthy controls (HCs).Discussion: We present the challenges encountered during this international collaborative project, including coordination, data management, funding constraints, language barriers, and authorship concerns, while highlighting the measures taken to address them. Conclusion: Collaborative virtual models offer a dynamic new frontier in medical research and are vital to studying rare diseases. The COVAD study demonstrates the potential of online platforms for conducting large-scale, patient-focused research and underscores the importance of integrating patient perspective into clinical care. Care of patients is our central motivation, and it is essential to recognize their voices as equal stakeholders and valued partners in the study of the conditions that affect them.

    • INTRODUCTION: The growing recognition of holistic patient care highlights the various factors shaping the quality of life of individuals with autoimmune and rheumatic diseases (AIRDs). Beyond the traditional disease measures, there is an emerging acknowledgment of the less-explored aspects, including subjective well-being, social determinants of health, comorbidities, mental health, and medication adherence. Moreover, digital health services have empowered patients to engage actively in decision-making alongside clinicians. To explore these domains within the context of AIRDs, the "Collating the Voice of People with Autoimmune Diseases" COVAD survey was conceived, a successor of the previous two COVAD surveys. In this document, we present the study protocol in comprehensive detail.METHODS: The COVAD-3 survey is a cross-sectional patient self-reported e-survey incorporating multiple widely accepted scales/scores to assess various aspects of patients' lifestyles objectively. To ensure the survey's accuracy and usability across diverse regions, it will be translated into multiple languages and subjected to rigorous vetting and pilot testing. It will be distributed by collaborators via online platforms and data will be collected from patients with AIRDs, and healthy individuals over eight months. Data analysis will focus on outcome measures related to various social, demographic, economic, and psychological factors.CONCLUSION: With the increasing awareness to adopt a holistic treatment approach encompassing all avenues of life, the COVAD-3 survey aims to gain valuable insights into the impact of social, demographic, economic, and psychological determinants of health on the subjective well-being in patients with AIRDs, which will contribute to a better understanding of their overall health and well-being.

  • Impact of SO2 and light on chemical morphology and hygroscopicity of natural salt aerosols
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - 1352-2310 .- 1873-2844. ; 322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interactions between SO2 and natural salt aerosol particles represent complex and crucial dynamics within atmospheric processes and the broader climate system. This study investigated the SO2 uptake, hygroscopicity, morphology and mixing states of natural salt particles, which are generated from brines sampled from the Chaka salt lake located in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. A comparison with atomized pure NaCl particles is included as reference. The results show that NaCl particles exhibit the lowest SO2 uptake, while Chaka salt particles demonstrate higher uptake due to their complex composition. The hygroscopicity of salt particles is influenced by several factors, including chemical complexity, SO2 exposure and light conditions. In comparison to pure NaCl, Chaka salt displays higher hygroscopicity, which is further enhanced in the presence of SO2. However, when exposed to light, mass growth is suppressed, suggesting the formation of species with lower hygroscopicity, such as Na2SO4. Analysis of particle morphology and mixing states reveals notable distinctions between NaCl crystals and Chaka salt particles, where the Chaka salt particles exhibit rounded shapes with a structure composed of cubic NaCl cores surrounded by sulfate materials as a coating. In addition, the chemical morphology analysis also reveals that the particles show morphological and spectral changes before and after the exposure to SO2, light and high RH. Therefore, this research highlights the intricate interactions between SO2 and natural salt aerosol particles in diverse environmental settings, underscoring their multifaceted impacts on atmospheric processes.

  • Surface solvation of Martian salt analogues at low relative humidities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science: Atmospheres. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2634-3606. ; 2:2, s. 137-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Salt aerosols play important roles in many processes related to atmospheric chemistry and the climate systems on both Earth and Mars. Complicated and still poorly understood processes occur on the salt surfaces when interacting with water vapor. In this study, ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) is used to characterize the surface chemical environment of Martian salt analogues originating from saline lakes and playas, as well as their responses to varying relative humidities. Generally, APXPS shows similar ionic compositions to those observed by ion chromatography (IC). However, XPS is a surface-sensitive method while IC is bulk-sensitive and differences are observed for species that preferentially partition to the surface or the bulk. Element-selective surface enhancement of Cl− is observed, likely caused by the presence of SO42−. In addition, Mg2+ is concentrated on the surface while Na+ is relatively depleted in the surface layer. Hence, the cations (Na+ and Mg2+) and the anions (Cl− and SO42−) show competitive correlations. At elevated relative humidity (RH), no major spectral changes were observed in the XPS results, except for the growth of an oxygen component originating from condensed H2O. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements show that the magnesium and sodium spectra are sensitive to the presence of water, and the results imply that the surface is fully solvated already at RH = 5%. The surface solvation is also fully reversible as the RH is reduced. No major differences are observed between sample types and sample locations, indicating that the salts originated from saline lakes commonly have solvated surfaces under the environmental conditions on Earth.

The resulting lofted dust and salt mixtures can impact atmospheric chemistry and climate systems through the many pathways represented by aerosol-cloud-climate interactions. In this study, dust/salt samples were collected from important sources of the East Asian dust storm, including the Badain Jaran Desert, the Tengger Desert and the Ulan Buh Desert in northwestern China. Ion chromatography (IC) measurements were performed to determine the concentrations of cations and anions. The ionic concentrations, pH and dissolvable fractions of sand samples show a positive correlation, indicating that the dissolved content is rich in alkaline ions. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model was employed to analyze the IC results, and from the PMF solutions non-obvious connections to local geography emerge. The results of hygroscopic experiments of sand samples which were measured by a vapor sorption analyzer indicate that the hygroscopicity may be related to the soluble content of samples, and the observed hygroscopic behavior can be well described by a thermodynamic model. The morphology of individual particles was chemically mapped by the synchrotron-based scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, and needle-shaped CaCO3 particles were observed to adhere to more irregular high K-containing particles. Moreover, a continuous flow diffusion chamber was used to investigate the ice nucleation abilities of typical salts, with both homogeneous freezing and deposition nucleation being observed. The results indicate that the salts primarily act as cloud condensation nuclei but can also act as ice nucleating particles at low temperatures.

    • Cold (few eV) ions of ionospheric origin are widely observed in the lobe region of Earth's magnetotail and can enter the ion jet region after magnetic reconnection is triggered in the magnetotail. Here, we investigate a magnetotail crossing with cold ions in one tailward and two earthward ion jets observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) constellation of spacecraft. Cold ions co-existing with hot plasma-sheet ions form types of ion velocity distribution functions (VDFs) in the three jets. In one earthward jet, MMS observe cold-ion beams with large velocities parallel to the magnetic fields, and we perform quantitative analysis on the ion VDFs in this jet. The cold ions, together with the hot ions, are reconnection outflow ions and are a minor population in terms of number density inside this jet. The average bulk speed of the cold-ion beams is approximately 38% larger than that of the hot plasma-sheet ions. The cold-ion beams inside the explored jet are about one order of magnitude colder than the hot plasma-sheet ions. These cold-ion beams could be accelerated by the Hall electric field in the cold ion diffusion region and the shrinking magnetic field lines through the Fermi effect.

    • Ultrasound welding technology is widely applied in the field of industrial manufacturing. In complex working conditions, various factors such as welding parameters, equipment conditions and operational techniques contribute to the formation of diverse and unpredictable line defects during the welding process. These defects exhibit characteristics such as varied shapes, random positions, and diverse types. Consequently, traditional defect surface detection methods face challenges in achieving efficient and accurate non-destructive testing. To achieve real-time detection of ultrasound welding defects efficiently, we have developed a lightweight network called the Lightweight Attention Detection Network (LAD-Net) based on an attention mechanism. Firstly, this work proposes a Deformable Convolution Feature Extraction Module (DCFE-Module) aimed at addressing the challenge of extracting features from welding defects characterized by variable shapes, random positions, and complex defect types. Additionally, to prevent the loss of critical defect features and enhance the network's capability for feature extraction and integration, this study designs a Lightweight Step Attention Mechanism Module (LSAM-Module) based on the proposed Step Attention Mechanism Convolution (SAM-Conv). Finally, by integrating the Efficient Multi-scale Attention (EMA) module and the Explicit Visual Center (EVC) module into the network, we address the issue of imbalance between global and local information processing, and promote the integration of key defect features. Qualitative and quantitative experimental results conducted on both ultrasound welding defect data and the publicly available NEU-DET dataset demonstrate that the proposed LAD-Net method achieves high performance. On our custom dataset, the F1 score and mAP@0.5 reached 0.954 and 94.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the method exhibits superior detection performance on the public dataset. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 54:4

    • We report the effects of the magnetic ground sate and microstructure on exchange bias (EB) in ball milled Ni44Co6Mn39.5Sn10.5 alloys. A giant bias field of 1.49 T has been obtained for the micron-sized particles after 15 h milling, which is considerably larger than that of 2 h milled platelets (0.35 T) and that of the bulk alloy (0.12 T). This giant bias field is attributed to the increased volume fraction of antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic interface, the enhanced antiferromagnetic fraction and the formed agglomerates. Our results reveal the critical roles of the magnetic ground state and microstructure of milled alloys in determining EB.

  • Large exchange bias in magnetic shape memory alloys by tuning magnetic ground state and magnetic-field history

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exchange bias is of technological significance in magnetic recording and spintronic devices. Pursuing a large bias field is a long-term goal for the research field of magnetic shape memory alloys. In this work, a large bias field of 0.53 T is achieved in the Ni50Mn34In16-xFex (x = 1, 3, 5) system by tuning the magnetic ground state (determined by the composition x) and the magnetic-field history (determined by the magnetic field H-FC during field cooling and the maximum field H-Max during isothermal magnetization). The maximum volume fraction of the interfaces between the ferromagnetic clusters and antiferromagnetic matrix and the strong interfacial interaction are achieved by tuning the magnetic ground state and the magnetic-field history, which results in strong magnetic unidirectional anisotropy and the large exchange bias. Moreover, two guidelines were proposed to obtain the large bias field. Firstly, the composition with a magnetic ground state consisting of the dilute spin glass and the strong antiferromagnetic matrix is preferred to obtain a large bias field; secondly, tuning the magnetic-field history by enhancing H-FC and reducing H-Max is beneficial to achieving large exchange bias. Our work provides an effective way for designing magnetically inhomogeneous compounds with large exchange bias.

    • Salt particles play important roles in many atmospheric processes due to their high hygroscopicity. Saline lakes and playas are sources of salt particles, which are normally mixed with mineral dust that can be transported over long distances. In this study, salt samples collected from four saline lakes and surrounding playas in the Qaidam Basin are studied for their physicochemical properties, focusing on the chemical compositions and hygroscopicity. The salt samples include brines, lakebed salts, crust salts, and crystallized brines. Thermodynamic models are used to explain the precipitating and hygroscopic behaviors based on ionic compositions of dissolved saline solutions. Regarding the ionic compositions, the crystallized brines are similar to the complex mineral compositions of brines, while the natural solid salts, including lakebed salts and crust salts, show very distinct composition differences. The main difference between brines and natural solid salts is the presence of Mg2+ and SO42–, which are primarily found in brines but not in the solid phases. Moreover, all the crust salts are dominated by NaCl regardless of the chemical compositions of the nearby saline lakes. Positive matrix factorization is applied to the ionic concentrations, and the results show that solid salts and brines are governed by different factors. The pH of brines correlates with Mg2+ concentrations and is potentially influenced by ambient CO2 uptake. The hygroscopicity experimental results and thermodynamic model outcomes show that the water uptake of different salt types is controlled by different salt components, that is, crystallized brines are controlled by MgCl2 and natural salts are governed by NaCl and KCl. The characterizations of saline lake and playa salts improve the understandings of the roles that surface salts potentially play in the climate systems of both Planet Earth and Mars.

    • It is of great significance to identify all types of domestic garbage quickly and intelligently to improve people's quality of life. Based on the visual analysis of feature map changes in different neural networks, a Skip-YOLO model is proposed for real-life garbage detection, targeting the problem of recognizing garbage with similar features. First, the receptive field of the model is enlarged through the large-size convolution kernel which enhanced the shallow information of images. Second, the high-dimensional features of the garbage maps are extracted by dense convolutional blocks. The sensitivity of similar features in the same type of garbage increases by strengthening the sharing of shallow low semantics and deep high semantics information. Finally, multiscale high-dimensional feature maps are integrated and routed to the YOLO layer for predicting garbage type and location. The overall detection accuracy is increased by 22.5% and the average recall rate is increased by 18.6% comparing the experimental results with the YOLOv3 analysis. In qualitative comparison, it successfully detects domestic garbage in complex multi-scenes. In addition, this approach alleviates the overfitting problem of deep residual blocks. The application case of waste sorting production line is used to further highlight the model generalization performance of the method. © 2023, Springer Nature B.V.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9456 .- 1557-9662. ; 73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the industrial production process, unsupervised visual inspection methods have obvious advantages over supervised visual inspection methods due to the scarcity of defect samples, annotation costs and the uncertainty of defect generation. Currently, unsupervised defect detection and localization methods have demonstrated significant improvements in detection accuracy to find numerous applications in industrial inspection. Nonetheless, the complexity of these methods limits their practical application. In this paper, we integrate the FastFlow model plugin as a probability distribution by introducing a simpler and lightweight CNN pre-trained backbone. Concurrently, various training strategies are employed to optimize the 2D Flow module within the Lightweight unsupervised flow model (LightFlow). Notably, the number of model parameters in the LightFlow model is only 1/4 of the original model size of the typical Vision Transformer (ViT) model CaiT. Thereby, this offers heightened training efficiency and speed. Therefore, extensive experimental results on three challenging anomaly detection datasets (MVTec AD, VisA, and BTAD) using various CNN backbones and multiple current state-of-the-art vision algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Specifically, the existing method can achieve 99.1% and 95.2% image-level AUROC (area under the receiver operating characteristic) in MVTec AD and VisA, respectively. IEEE

  • Characterization and Seasonal Variation of PM2.5 Composition in Xi'an, Northwest China: Oxygenated and Nitrogenous Organic Aerosol
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS EARTH AND SPACE CHEMISTRY. - 2472-3452. ; 8:7, s. 1370-1384
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxygenated (CHO) and nitrogenous (CHON) organic aerosols (OA) are important components of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in urban environments. To achieve a molecular-level understanding of the seasonal variation of the OA fraction, ambient PM2.5 samples collected from April 2018 to March 2019 in Xi'an, Northwest China, were analyzed using an iodide Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer combined with a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols (FIGAERO-CIMS). The set of compounds identified by FIGAERO-CIMS was estimated to represent 28.6% of the organic matter in PM2.5. Evaporation temperatures measured by FIGAERO-CIMS indicated that semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) were dominant among the identified analytes. Concentrations of CHO (6.01 +/- 4.24 mu g m(-3)) and CHON (3.17 +/- 2.34 mu g m(-3)) increased in winter, especially during a severe haze episode in January 2019. The CHO compounds comprised up to 75.3 +/- 3.2% of the total detected compounds. The average carbon oxidation state (((OS) over bar (C)) over bar) was slightly elevated in the summer samples. The CHON compounds were mainly nitro-aromatics and their abundance increased substantially in winter, which was attributed to extensive biomass burning demonstrated by high levels of levoglucosan. Biomass-burning related sources accounted for 61.0 +/- 19.6% and 68.3 +/- 21.9% of the total CHON concentration in autumn and winter, respectively, while secondary formation was the dominant source of CHON species in spring (70.1 +/- 11.6%) and summer (79.8 +/- 7.0%). These results emphasize the importance of secondary formation and biomass burning as sources of OA components and reveal a clear need to control biomass burning used for heating in Xi'an and its surroundings.

  • Interdecadal to Multidecadal Variability of East Asian Summer Monsoon Over the Past Half Millennium
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996. ; 127:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) plays a crucial role for ecosystems and societies in East Asia past, present, and future. However, substantial uncertainties remain regarding EASM variability on interdecadal to multidecadal timescales because of the short length of instrumental data in East Asia. This study extended the EASM circulation index in the modern meteorological studies to the paleoclimate over the past half-millennium (1470-1998 CE) to reconcile the understanding of the EASM variability in paleoclimate and modern meteorological studies. The EASM index is reconstructed based on the common signal from the three main types of the proxy records (the tree rings, speleothems, and historical documentary data) related to EASM. The reconstructed EASM index captures the simultaneous changes of the "Meiyu precipitation" and the southwesterly anomalies in South China on interdecadal to multidecadal timescales, which is a dynamic pattern visible and well-documented in the modern meteorology. Analysis of the reconstructed EASM index suggests that the interdecadal to multidecadal EASM variability is closely associated with the Pacific-Japan teleconnection pattern, which acts as a bridge between the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the anomalous anticyclonic circulation over the western North Pacific. It also indicates that the EASM variability over the recent 30 years (1992-2021 CE) falls within the range of natural variability over the past half-millennium.

    • Background/aim: We aimed to explore the roles of glycoprotein glycosylation in the pathogenesis of Kashin–Beck disease (KBD), and evaluated the effectiveness of sodium hyaluronate treatment.Materials and methods: Blood and saliva were collected from KBD patients before and after the injection of sodium hyaluronate. Normal healthy subjects were included as controls. Saliva and serum lectin microarrays and saliva and serum microarray verifications were used to screen and confirm the differences in lectin levels among the three groups. Results: In saliva lectin microarray, bindings to Sophora japonica agglutinin (SJA), Griffonia (Bandeiraea) simplicifolia lectin I (GSL-I), Euonymus europaeus lectin (EEL), Maackia amurensis lectin II (MAL-II), Sambucus nigra lectin (SNA), Hippeastrum hybrid lectin (HHL), and Aleuria aurantia lectin (AAL) were higher in the untreated KBD patients than in the control group. Increased levels of HHL, MAL-II, and GSL-I in the untreated KBD patients discriminated them in particular from the treated ones. Jacalin was lower in the untreated KBD patients compared to the treated KBD and control groups. In serum lectin microarray, HHL and peanut agglutinin (PNA) were increased in the untreated KBD group in comparison to the control one. AAL, Phaseolus vulgaris agglutinin (E+L) (PHA- E+L), and Psophocarpus tetragonolobus lectin I (PTL-I) were lower in the untreated KBD patients compared to the treated KBD and control groups. Hyaluronate treatment appeared to normalize SNA, AAL, and MAL-II levels in saliva, and HHL, PNA, AAL, PTL-I, and PHA-E+L levels in serum. Saliva reversed microarray verification confirmed significant differences between the groups in SNA and Jacalin, in particular for GSL-I levels, while serum reversed microarray verification indicated that HHL, PNA, and AAL levels returned to normal levels after the hyaluronate treatment. Lectin blot confirmed significant differences in HHL, AAL, and Jacalin in saliva, and HHL, PNA, PHA-E+L, and AAL in serum. Conclusion: HHL in saliva and serum may be a valuable diagnostic biomarker of KBD, and it may be used as follow-up for the hyaluronate treatment.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems. - : Springer Nature. - 2367-2617 .- 2367-0983. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Owing to their flexibility and rapid response, grid-connected distributed energy resources (DERs) are wielding growing influence in frequency regulation markets (FRMs). Nevertheless, compared with conventional large-scale generators, small-scale DERs are usually weakly shielded by cyber security measures. This offers attackers the opportunity of disrupting the clearing and settlement of FRMs by manipulating the bid information of DERs. In this paper, the frequency regulation market equilibrium is studied considering the dynamic gaming between attackers and defenders, both of which need the knowledge of FRMs for their interventions. Specifically, a tri-level programming model characterizing the attacker–defender–operator (ADO) interdiction problem in FRMs is developed and then analyzed using a column and constraint generation algorithm, thereby achieving market equilibrium representing the defender's best response to the attacker. The defense strategy in the market equilibrium can attenuate the negative influence of cyber attacks upon the FRMs to the maximum extent. Finally, based on the operating rules of the California Independent System Operator, the FRM process considering the ADO interdiction is simulated and the numerical equilibrium results are presented.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although polymers have been studied for well over a century, there are few examples of covalently linked polymer crystals synthesised directly from solution. One-dimensional (1D) covalent polymers that are packed into a framework structure can be viewed as a 1D covalent organic framework (COF), but making a single crystal of this has been elusive. Herein, by combining labile metal coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry, we discover a strategy to synthesise single-crystal metallo-COFs under solvothermal conditions. The single-crystal structure is rigorously solved using single-crystal electron diffraction technique. The non-centrosymmetric metallo-COF allows second harmonic generation. Due to the presence of syntactic pendant amine groups along the polymer chains, the metallopolymer crystal can be further cross-linked into a crystalline woven network. Although polymers have been studied for well over a century, there are few examples of covalently linked polymer crystals synthesized directly from solution. Here, the authors demonstrate a strategy to synthesize single crystalline 1D metallo-covalent organic frameworks by combining dynamic covalent chemistry and metal-ligand coordination.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Formamidinium lead iodide perovskites are promising light-harvesting materials, yet stabilizing them under operating conditions without compromising optimal optoelectronic properties remains challenging. We report a multimodal host-guest complexation strategy to overcome this challenge using a crown ether, dibenzo-21-crown-7, which acts as a vehicle that assembles at the interface and delivers Cs+ ions into the interior while modulating the material. This provides a local gradient of doping at the nanoscale that assists in photoinduced charge separation while passivating surface and bulk defects, stabilizing the perovskite phase through a synergistic effect of the host, guest, and host-guest complex. The resulting solar cells show power conversion efficiencies exceeding 24% and enhanced operational stability, maintaining over 95% of their performance without encapsulation for 500h under continuous operation. Moreover, the host contributes to binding lead ions, reducing their environmental impact. This supramolecular strategy illustrates the broad implications of host-guest chemistry in photovoltaics. It remains a challenge to achieve a balance between performance and stability, as well as addressing the environmental impact of perovskite solar cells. Here, the authors propose a multimodal host-guest complexation strategy enabling these shortcomings to be addressed simultaneously.

  • Ingår i: Scanning. - : Wiley-Hindawi. - 0161-0457 .- 1932-8745.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scanning electron microscope (SEM) is widely used in the analysis and research of materials, including fracture analysis, microstructure morphology, and nanomaterial analysis. With the rapid development of materials science and computer vision technology, the level of detection technology is constantly improving. In this paper, the deep learning method is used to intelligently identify microcracks in the microscopic morphology of SEM image. A deep learning model based on image level is selected to reduce the interference of other complex microscopic topography, and a detection method with dense continuous bounding boxes suitable for SEM images is proposed. The dense and continuous bounding boxes were used to obtain the local features of the cracks and rotating the bounding boxes to reduce the feature differences between the bounding boxes. Finally, the bounding boxes with filled regression were used to highlight the microcrack detection effect. The results show that the detection accuracy of our approach reached 71.12%, and the highest mIOU reached 64.13%. Also, microcracks in different magnifications and in different backgrounds were detected successfully.

  • The effects of three profiles on the mechanical properties and grain size of self-piercing riveting joints using ultrasonic welding
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 0268-3768 .- 1433-3015. ; 129:11-12, s. 4869-4882
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrasonic welding has become a key joining approach in batteries and energy vehicles. This work reports the optimization in static property and stability of self-piercing riveting joints which is becoming the most versatile way to join microstructures. Tool heads of three different knurling profiles (e.g., A, B, and C) are used to perform ultrasonic composite with riveting. Based on tensile-shear tests, SEM, EDS, XRD, and Vickers microhardness analysis were conducted to investigate the comparative study of the fracture morphology, element distribution, phase structure, and hardness. The results indicated that all three types of knurling generate solid phase welding at the sheet joints. Thus, it improved the forming quality and mechanical properties of self-piercing riveting joints. The C-shaped welding tool head has advantageous effect on optimizing the mechanical properties of joints. Further, it enhanced the average peak load by 25.6%, the average failure displacement by 31.1%, and the average energy absorption by 88.8%. The microscopic results showed that a large amount of oxides are precipitated at the edge of welding joints when the B-shape knurling tool is used. The distribution of the hardness value of joints horizontal line is “M” shape. Besides, the coarse grains in the joint area and the interplanar space increase significantly after ultrasonic welding which softens the sheet. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature.
