The impact of schizotypy on quality of life among adults with autism spectrum disorder

- BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizotypal personality disorder can be difficult to distinguish. Deficits in social relationships and social interaction, present in both conditions, are known to impair quality of life. The aim of the present study was to investigate if schizotypal symptoms affect quality of life among adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and to study the association between schizotypy and autistic traits among them.METHODS: Participants diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (n = 110) completed questionnaires exploring schizotypy (Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire - Brief Revised (SPQ-BR)), autistic traits (The Ritvo Autism, Asperger Diagnostic Scale-Revised Screen 14 items), anxiety and depression (The Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale) and quality of life (Brunnsviken Brief Quality of Life Scale and the European quality of life index version 5D).RESULTS: Schizotypy was found to be associated with anxiety, depressive and autistic symptoms, and poor quality of life. Although schizotypy was a predictor for impaired quality of life, this relationship was mediated by symptoms of anxiety and depression, plausibly inherent to autism. Autistic traits were positively associated with all higher order constructs of the SPQ-BR, i.e. positive and negative schizotypy, disorganization and social anxiety, as well as with poor quality of life.CONCLUSIONS: There is considerable overlap between schizotypy and autism that needs to be considered in research. Prominent schizotypal traits in people with ASD may constitute an endophenotype coinciding with a particularly poor quality of life.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03570372 : Internet-based Treatment for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (MILAS).

Landslide Archaeology : Past hazards and disasters in the Göta River Valley and beyond

- Exploring the impact of landslides on past human communities, their landscapes, and their material remains, this thesis focuses on the most landslide-prone region of Sweden: the Göta River Valley (Sw. Göta älvdalen). It is argued that through a multi-source methodology and by employing ideas concerning geoculturality and disasterscapes, we can begin to approach the lived experiences of both distant and recent history. The thesis further outlines the risk posed by landslides to cultural heritage and archaeological sites, a threat significantly exacerbated by ongoing processes of anthropogenic climate change. This compilation thesis contributes to the study of past hazards and disasters with relevance on both regional, national, and international levels. The comprehensive summary of the thesis provides both an overview of the field and an in-depth study of how landslides have been perceived and interacted with throughout time. Additionally, five research papers, each dealing with different aspects of landslide archaeology within Western Sweden from prehistory into the present day, address separate aspects of landslide archaeology.The first paper presents new dating evidence for the Late Iron Age trading site of Köpingen and, in turn, uses these results to provide a minimum age for a prehistoric landslide on the same site. The second paper outlines the research history of the great medieval landslide at Jordfallet, employing archival studies and legacy data to reassess its traditional dating. Most likely, the event occurred in the year 1249 AD, a conclusion with relevance for Scandinavian geopolitics in the Middle Ages. The third and fourth papers are historical-archaeological studies of two Early Modern disasters, the 1648 Intagan and 1703 Skrehall landslides, respectively, providing new understandings of these events. In the case of the former landslide, it is found to have left few easily identifiable archaeological traces behind, while newly discovered remains are described at the latter site. The fifth and final paper examines major landslides across Western Sweden in the 20th and 21st centuries, showing that several of these have destroyed archaeological sites, while others have prompted archaeologists to conduct emergency fieldwork. This illustrates the risks posed by landsliding in the region and emphasizes the need for cohesive contingency planning within the cultural heritage management sector.

- Vi, 1 620 forskare samt lärare vid universitet och högskolor, är eniga med de unga bakom Auroramålet: De drabbas och riskerar att drabbas allvarligt av klimatkrisen under sin livstid. De klimatåtgärder vi vidtar i närtid avgör deras framtid. Sverige måste ta ansvar och göra sin rättvisa andel av det globala klimatarbetet. I strid med Parisavtalet ökar utsläppen av växthusgaser i en takt som gör att 1,5-gradersmålet kan överskridas om några år. De globala effekterna blir allt mer synliga med ständiga temperaturrekord, smältande isar, havshöjning och extremväder som torka, förödande bränder och skyfall med enorma översvämningar, som i Pakistan nyligen. Försörjningen av befolkningen utsätts för allvarliga hot i många länder.Minskningen av den biologiska mångfalden är extrem. Klimatkrisen är enligt WHO det största hotet mot människors hälsa i hela världen och barn utgör en särskilt sårbar grupp. Med Sveriges nordliga läge sker uppvärmningen här dubbelt så fort som det globala genomsnittet. Det förskjuter utbredningsområden för växtlighet och sjukdomsbärande insekter och ökar förekomsten av extremväder såsom värmeböljor, skogsbränder och översvämningar samt av många olika sorters infektioner och allergier. När extremväder ökar, ökar även stressen och risken för mental ohälsa. Värmeböljor ökar risken för sjukdom och död hos sårbara grupper som äldre, små barn och personer med kroniska sjukdomar. De negativa effekterna på hälsan kommer att öka i takt med klimatkrisen och barn riskerar att drabbas av ackumulerade negativa hälsoeffekter under hela sina liv. Redan i dag är mer än hälften av unga mellan 12 och 18 år i Sverige ganska eller mycket oroliga för klimat och miljö. Detta är förståeligt när våra beslutsfattare inte gör vad som krävs.Den juridiska och moraliska grunden för arbetet mot klimatförändringarna är att varje land måste göra sin rättvisa andel av det globala klimatarbetet. Centralt i det internationella klimatramverket är att rika länder med höga historiska utsläpp, däribland Sverige, måste gå före resten av världen. Dessa länder måste också bidra till att finansiera klimatomställningen i länderna i det Globala Syd, som är minst ansvariga för klimatkrisen men drabbas hårdast. Denna rättviseprincip är tydlig i Parisavtalet och var en het diskussionsfråga under COP27 i Sharm el-Sheikh, men lyser med sin frånvaro i det svenska klimatarbetet. Sverige har satt mål för att minska sina utsläpp. Men de är helt otillräckliga: minskningstakten är för låg och målen tillåter samtidigt att åtgärder skjuts på framtiden. Dessutom exkluderas merparten av Sveriges utsläpp från de svenska nationella utsläppsmålen; bland annat utelämnas utsläpp som svensk konsumtion orsakar utanför Sveriges gränser, utsläpp från utrikes transporter och utsläpp från markanvändning och skogsbruk, exempelvis utsläpp från förbränning av biobränslen eller utsläpp från dikade våtmarker (Prop. 2016/17:146 s.25-28).Sverige saknar dessutom ett eget mål för att öka upptaget av växthusgaser genom utökat skydd och restaurering av ekosystem, något som krävs för att begränsa de värsta konsekvenserna av klimatkrisen (IPCC s.32). Trots dessa låga ambitioner misslyckas Sverige med att nå sina utsläppsmål, konstaterar både Klimatpolitiska rådet och Naturvårdsverket. En klimatpolitik i linje med Parisavtalet kräver både att alla typer av växthusgasutsläpp minskar samtidigt som – inte i stället för – upptaget av växthusgaser maximeras: i dag misslyckas Sverige på bägge fronter.Slutsatsen är tydlig. Sverige vidtar inte de åtgärder som krävs för att skydda barns och ungdomars rättigheter enligt Europakonventionen till skydd för de mänskliga rättigheterna. Detta medför allvarliga risker för liv och hälsa för unga generationer, människor i andra länder och särskilt utsatta grupper. Detta kan inte fortsätta. Därför ställer vi oss bakom Auroras krav att Sverige börjar göra sin rättvisa andel och omedelbart sätter igång ett omfattande och långtgående klimatarbete som vilar på vetenskaplig grund och sätter rättvisa i centrum.

- This research aims to analyze the effect of a five-stage strategyelaborated within the Erasmus+ project FOrSE (Framework forOrganizing Studies Entrepreneurially) realized by three EUuniversities. The strategy was integrated into a study course ofPedagogy to enhance entrepreneurial mindsets and behaviors offirst-year international Master students who did not have anyopportunity for face-to-face studies because of the quarantine.The key focus of the strategy is to promote students’ ability toanalyze the problems facing them during the COVID-19pandemic and identify and/or realize new opportunities in theface of the worries and uncertainty. The qualitative contentanalysis of the Master students’ reflections and the analysis ofthe challenges faced, and new opportunities identified and/orrealized showed that they tried to adjust their inner world to theevents which take place in the outer world for gaining selfconfidenceand achieving harmony.

- The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the European Union’s strategies both set goals for solving environmental challenges faced by societies and communities. As part of solving these challenges, both the UN and the EU stress the development of entrepreneurial and innovative education. Teacher education plays a crucial role in these efforts, since teachers and teacher educators have a significant impact on educating citizens far into the future. In this research, we studied how Nordic (Finnish, Swedish, and Icelandic) primary teacher education curricula involve entrepreneurial, sustainable, and pro-environmental education. For this study, the authors analyzed the B.Ed. curricula of three academic teacher education institutions in Spring 2021. We used qualitative content analysis as our research method. According to the results, all three curricula incorporated both entrepreneurship education and sustainable development to some extent, although often not very explicitly. Given the urgency of problems such as global climate change, the educational goals and contents in these curricula related to entrepreneurial education and sustainable development are very limited. The idea of integrating environmental/sustainable and entrepreneurship education could be promoted in the future more explicitly, with these interdisciplinary educational themes emphasised more strongly in the curricula and education policies.

- This chapter is about using self as case in teach-the-teacher entrepreneurship courses. As participants likely will engage as teachers in entrepreneurial education, the course has potential to affect many future students. I argue that two types of cases are needed. The first kind places the teachers in entrepreneurial situations where they have first-hand experience of what they want their future students to experience, which easily can be mimicked in their own teaching. The second type is about cognitively understanding what entrepreneurial education is about and what teacher skills and competences are needed to teach entrepreneurially. In others words—professional tools for teaching entrepreneurially. In both these situations, the 'case' is the teacher. By reflecting on your own real-time or retrospective entrepreneurial action for the first type, and by reflecting on yourself as an entrepreneurial educator for the second type, each teacher becomes their own case. Two such case tasks of each kind are presented that build on five pillars of entrepreneurial education presented in the chapter. Although the content is most relevant for those engaging in teach-the-teacher courses in entrepreneurship, it is also relevant for traditional entrepreneurship teachers as cases can be applied in their teaching or as tools to develop their teaching.
