  • Recreation in different forest settings : a scene preference study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Forests. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4907. ; 3:4, s. 923-943
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recreation  activity  preferences  in  forest  settings  were  explored  in  a  scene preference  study.  The  importance  of  type  of  human  intervention   and  the  level  of biodiversity for preference and intention to engage in recreation activities were examined in a sample of forestry and social science students in Sweden. Results showed that forestry students displayed an almost equally strong preference for natural-looking  scenes as for scenes  with traces  of recreation  (e.g., paths),  whereas  social  science  students  preferred recreational scenes the most. Least preferred were scenes with traces of forest management. Different  forest  settings  were  furthermore  preferred  for  different  recreation  activities. Recreational settings were favored for walking and going on outings, and natural-looking settings were more appreciated for picking berries or mushrooms. Respondents displayed a stronger intention to study plants and animals in high biodiversity settings and the intention to  exercise  was  stronger  in  low  biodiversity  settings.  Implications  for  future  land  use planning and forest management are discussed.

  • The general public´s support for forest policy in Sweden : a value belief approach
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 0964-0568 .- 1360-0559. ; 56:6, s. 850-867
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, the legitimacy of the forest policy in Sweden was explored. Based on a value belief approach, the general public's support for forest policy was examined by means of a questionnaire (n=796). Results demonstrated that the respondents believed ecological principles, such as sustaining natural conditions for native plants and animals, were most important in forest policy, but preservation of social values and using the forest efficiently to maintain high market value were also emphasised. Although socio-demographic variables (i.e. gender and age) had some impact on support for the policy, different values and beliefs reflecting ecological, social and economic interests were more important. By considering different values and beliefs, as well as policy support explicitly, the study provides a multifaceted account of the public's viewpoint regarding forest issues.

  • Proximity, accessibility and choice : a matter of taste or condition?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Papers in regional science (Print). - : Wiley. - 1056-8190 .- 1435-5957. ; 91:1, s. 65-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on a combination of register data and travel survey data, this research explores changes in the accessibility to different amenities for the Swedish population between 1995 and 2005, as well as the reasons behind the changes: redistribution of either amenities or the population. Overall, proximity has increased concerning most of the amenities during the period. However, despite decreasing 'potential' distances, actual travel distances are growing longer due to, for example, an increasing selectivity in preferences. An analysis of the accessibility development for service amenities shows that restructuring within the service sector is the main cause of the changes, and to a lesser extent population redistribution.

  • Contrasting arctic and mainstream Swedish descriptions of Northern Sweden : the view from established domestic research
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Arctic. - : Arctic Institute of North America. - 0004-0843 .- 1923-1245. ; 66:3, s. 351-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2011, Sweden released its first-ever Arctic strategy, in preparation for taking over the chairmanship of the Arctic Council, an eight-state cooperation organization. The recent political development that will include Sweden more extensively in Arctic regional cooperation makes it relevant to review and comment on the image of the areas involved from a Swedish viewpoint and to improve the often very brief descriptions of northernmost Sweden in Arctic literature. In this paper, we contrast descriptions of the Arctic in the Arctic Human Development Report (AHDR) with descriptions of northern Sweden in established domestic demographic and regional development research. The study shows that many of the assumptions in the first AHDR to the effect that the eight "Arctic" regions are rather directly comparable in fact reveal substantial differences between areas, with northern Sweden standing in sharp contrast to many of the descriptions. Instead of having a population that is very small, young, and rapidly growing because of a high birth rate, northern Sweden is characterized by relatively dense habitation with a stable and aging population of long-term residents. Moreover, it has a very small and relatively integrated indigenous population with largely the same health situation as in Sweden overall. While depopulation and urbanization are evident in its less populated areas, migration from the region is partly directed at the larger regional centres in the area, following a pattern seen in the Western world at large.

  • Attitudes on intensive forestry : an investigation into perceptions of increased production requirements in Swedish forestry
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 27:5, s. 438-448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2008, the Swedish government launched an inquiry into the possibilities, benefits and requirements for conducting intensive forestry in part of the Swedish countryside, including fertilization, genetically improved plant material and fastgrowing species beyond what is currently allowed in Swedish legislation. Drawing upon part of that governmental investigation, this paper analyzes attitudes toward intensive forestry over time. The study draws upon studies of points of conflict written in the 1970s and 1980s, attitudes among different stakeholder groups, and interviews with forest owners and stakeholder groups potentially affected by intensive forestry. The study concludes that the diverging opinions as to what constitutes acceptable forest use have remained largely the same over the years. Radical landscape change is generally not seen as desirable, but views diverge over the use of novel tree species and the use of fertilization.

  • Forest values and forest management attitudes among private forest owners in Sweden.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Forests. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4907. ; 2:1, s. 30-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study focused on how forests will be managed in the future in light of the increased emphasis being put by the public on the ecological and recreational values of forests, the trend towards an increased share of non-resident forest owners, and the increased female forest ownership. The value and belief basis of forest management attitudes was explored using a questionnaire sent to a sample of private forest owners ‘residing on’ (n = 995, return rate = 51.3%) and ‘not residing on’ the forest property (n = 997, return rate = 50%). The results showed that a share of private forest owners strongly value both the view that the forest should predominately be used for timber production and the view that preservation is most important. The proposed hierarchical structure of influence, in which the forest management attitude was influenced by values and beliefs, was supported in the study. The ecological, recreational, and production forest values primarily influenced the most closely related forest management attitude, even if some cross-sectional effects and some effects of socio-demographics were found, showing that the view a private forest owner has on different forms of management styles is shaped by the perceived multiple values of the forest.

  • Influence of values, beliefs, and age on intention to travel by a new railway line under construction in northern Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part A. - : Elsevier. - 0965-8564 .- 1879-2375. ; 48, s. 86-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim is to investigate determinants of intentions to use a new railway line under construction in the northern Sweden. To this end a test was made of a two-part hierarchical model of train-use intentions positing influences from general values and beliefs as well as specific beliefs about the new railway line. A questionnaire was sent to a randomly selected sample of 1238 citizens residing in seven municipalities along the new railway line. In order to also investigate potential generation differences participants were sampled in four age groups, young adults, young middle-aged, middle-aged, and pensioners. The results supported the proposed hierarchical model showing that general values and beliefs influence intentions primarily through the specific beliefs about the railway line. In addition, the results showed that the youngest age group is more open to change and has stronger intentions to use the new railway.

  • New Infrastructure - Increased Accessibility?
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the work towards developing a sustainable transportation system one has to look at both design and technical aspects of transportation and travel modes, and people's travel behavior and travel intentions. The train as travel mode has been readily established in Europe and in the southern part of Sweden. The possibility to travel by train in the northern part of Sweden has however been more restricted and the train services have historically not been placed in proximity to where the larger mass of people is situation, that is, along the east coast. Through a major infrastructure investment,  new tracks were built over a distance of about 200 kilometers along the east coast of the northern part of Sweden. In the present case train services are being introduced to a region in which the train has not been an alternative before to any large extent, possibly making the socialization towards car use even more pronounced. If so, greater barriers towards switching from car to train present could potentially exist. The aim of the present study is thus: (1) to discuss people's expectations on a new transport mode, (2) based on expectations to discuss potential for increased accessibility and interaction in a labor market region, and (3) to test a proposed structural equation model of the hierarchical relationship between basic values and general environmental beliefs, travel mode attitudes, beliefs about the specific infrastructure investment and the intention to choose to travel by train.

  • East-Central European migrants in Sweden : migration motives and migration outcome
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Social Space. - : Rzeszow University and BOSQO. - 2084-1558. ; 2, s. 75-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1989 and the European Union enlargement in 2004 and 2007 respectively have changed the preconditions of east-west migration. However, the geopolitical changes have not resulted in the ‘mass migration’ that was initially expected from the EU15. Sweden is one of the countries to which migration from East-Central Europe has been modest, although it has increased. Reasons why this migration is still limited in Sweden are not only connected to political structures; occupation, family situation, and social networks are additional issues that matter in the migration decision-making process. This paper explores migration motives and the outcome of the migration in terms of employment, family status and satisfaction with the migration decision for people moving to Sweden from Russia and the East-Central European countries, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The study is based on a questionnaire survey and reveals significant gender differences when it comes to migration motives, and women tend to state social reasons to a higher degree than men. Although social motives predominate among the migrants, economic reasons tend to become more important over time, particularly after the year 2000. Moreover, the majority of the respondents report that to migrate was a fairly easy decision to make. However, some differences exist depending on country and gender, whereby the decision is perceived as less easy for migrants from Russia and Poland and for women who stated social and economic motives. There is also evidence that motives are of importance for labour market success among respondents.

  • Preferences for commuting in sparsely populated areas : the case of Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport and Land Use. - Minnesota, USA : Journal of Transport and Land Use. - 1938-7849. ; 2:3/4, s. 87-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a time of decreased inclination to migrate and an increased place attachment, increasingcommuting can improve the functionality of local labor markets. In regional development policy in Sweden, facilitating increased commuting over larger geographical areas is therefore viewed as essential forenhancing the supply of competent labor in all parts of the country and decreasing spatial segmentation.Building on an analysis of data from a survey of Swedish residents’ commuting options and preferences, this paper focuses on commuting in a relatively sparsely populated and peripheral area in northern Sweden.Further, the question of whether increased commuting is socially sustainable from a commuter’sperspective is discussed. ?e point of departure is that the individual and the individual’s context affectcommuting behavior through social norms, geographical structure and available infrastructure. Withrespect to travel patterns and mode choice, a gender perspective is included in the analyses. ?e resultsshow that the geographic and socio-economic structure of the labor market place time restrictions onpeople’s commuting behavior and as a consequence people’s daily reach in sparsely populated areas isrestricted. Geographical structure, available infrastructure, and socio-economic factors (such as education, employment, and family situation) are also found to restrict women’s access to the local labormarket to a greater extent than men’s. Furthermore, the study shows that the inclination to commutedeclines rapidly when commuting times exceed 45 minutes, regardless of gender, transport mode, andsocio-economic factors. Considering distances and the provision of public transport in sparsely populatedareas, the car is valued as the most optimal mode of transport when commuting. If regional growthis to be promoted by facilitating commuting over longer distances, a higher level of car dependency mustbe accepted in sparsely populated areas.

  • The persevering commuter : Duration of long-distance commuting
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Part A. - : Elsevier. - 0965-8564 .- 1879-2375. ; 44:6, s. 433-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A growing number of people are long-distance commuters. For some long-distance commuting is a temporary solution, while as for others it can be a more long-term strategy to promote career and income. This study addresses duration of long-distance commuting – 30 km or more between home and work – in Sweden, and what characterizes individuals who commute for shorter or longer periods. The effects of long-distance commuting in terms of economic outcome for both partners in a commuter household are analysed. The study is based on register data for the years 1995–2005 covering all long-distance commuters in Sweden. One finding is that previous experience of long-distance commuting makes it more likely to have a long duration of long-distance commuting. In addition economic incentives, such as a higher income, are positively correlated for continuing to long-distance commuting more than a few years. Furthermore, the analysis shows that male commuters benefit more in terms of economic outcome of long-distance commuting. It is concluded that the trend with increasing long-distance commuting can sustain not only gender differences on the labour market but also within households. Finally, the paper indicates that long-distance commuting is a strategic mobility choice for households, rather than a short-term solution for a few years.

  • Commuting and place attachment in city regions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NECTAR 2013 International Conference. ; , s. 50-50
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In many Western countries larger cities expand geographically and smaller surrounding communities (i.e. hinterlands) become integrated into a larger city-region. In the first years of the 21st century there were more than 300 city-regions across the. An argument for city-regions is to ease and promote labor market interaction, i.e. to balance geographic mismatch of labor supply and demand. Consequently, a rationale for growth of cities and regions (into city regions) is to accomplish territorial entities that will be competitive, economic strong and part of important global networks. A consequence of interaction between people and businesses in different parts of the region is increased transport and travel. A large number of people travel long distances to work. In Europe, commuting times are increasing; 15 percent of the employed have travel times of 60 minutes and more to work, and the trend is that distance as well as number of people engaged in long-distance commuting is increasing. This means that for many people the working-hours are spent in another municipality or city than the residential municipality, i.e. an increasing number of people spend their awaken time outside their residential municipality. In order to manage the puzzle of daily activities within the individual’s time-space frame, a number of service and leisure amenities might have to be carried out outside the residential municipality. Municipalities provide basic services (education, care, infrastructure, residential planning etc.) to its residents and exercise taxation power. Public participation is thus restricted to residency, and frequent visitors (e.g. in-commuters) lack the possibilities and rights to participate in politics and decision-making. At the same time, living in one municipality but spending a large part of the active hours in another limit the time available for participating in different social and political activities in the residential municipality. Being non-present for long hours can influence the citizens’ identity and responsibility to the residential municipality. This raises the questions if commuting (in this case within the city regions) strengthens or weakens attachment to the residential municipality and city-region respectively, and if the propensity to migrate is affected by commuting? The empirical results in this presentation are based on a questionnaire survey in two city-regions in Sweden. The survey was carried out in 2010, and directed to citizens in the larger Göteborg region in the south, and the smaller Umeå region in the north.

  • Old, yet young : travel-activity patterns among new pensioners in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Social Space. - 2084-1558. ; :1, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many countries are facing population aging as a consequence of decreased fertility, lower mortality rates and increased longevity. Successful aging is characterised by good health at high ages with no or very few disabilities, personal contentedness, active participation in society and in meaningful activities. A significant portion of the total number of trips is carried out by the retired people aged 65 or older, and the share of trips carried out by this group is expected to increase.  In this article the daily travel and activities of elderly people in Sweden are scrutinised recent retired, young pensioners (65-75 years old) and older pensioners (aged 76-84 years) are compared. Based on a questionnaire directed to 2,544 Swedish persons 65-84 years old and answered by 1503 pensioners, daily mobility and travel are analysed in the context of health, mobility resources and socio-spatial circumstances. Although the retirees are a heterogeneous group in which health, personal mobility resources, preferences, etc. vary between individuals and give different preconditions for daily spatial mobility, chronological age can be relevant as a conceptualisation of age from a policy and decision-making perspective.
