  • Adsorption properties of a mixed surface studied by high resolution core level photoemission : CO/0.5 ML Pd/Rh(111)
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - 0039-6028. ; 411:1-2, s. 111-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The coverage-dependent adsorption properties of a laterally heterogeneous bimetallic surface have been investigated by high resolution core level photoemission and low energy electron diffraction. The specific system under study was CO adsorbed on a Rh(111) surface onto which 2D Pd islands (coverage 0.5 ML) were formed by vapor deposition. The CO adsorption properties of the heterogeneous surface were compared with CO adsorption on a Rh(111) surface covered with a full Pd monolayer and with previous results for the CO/Rh(111) system. For low exposures CO is only found on the Rh(111) patches which can be explained by diffusion of CO from the Pd islands onto Rh parts in the adsorption process. At higher exposures CO diffusion from Rh to Pd is indicated. The origin of the diffusion processes can be found in the different coverage-dependent CO adsorption energies on the two surface parts.

  • The influence of preadsorbed oxygen on the adsorption of CO on two-dimensional Pd islands on a Rh (111) surface
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - 0039-6028. ; 418:2, s. 457-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of preadsorbed oxygen on the CO adsorption properties of a laterally heterogeneous bimetallic surface consisting of Pd islands on Rh(111) at a Pd coverage of 0.5 monolayers has been studied by high resolution core level photoemission. A surface consisting of clean Pd islands surrounded by oxygen-covered Rh(111) patches was prepared by predosing oxygen at room temperature. By applying core level photoemission to the Pd 3d5/2 and the C 1s levels, the adsorption of CO on this surface was studied with particular attention being paid to possible CO diffusion between the two surface parts. The CO molecules are found to diffuse from the oxygen-covered Rh(111) patches onto the Pd islands for low to medium CO exposures. This diffusion direction is opposite of that found previously for the 0.5 ML Pd on Rh(111) system with no oxygen predosing. This reversal of the diffusion direction is argued to be due to a large reduction of the CO adsorption energy on the Rh patches of the surface caused by the preadsorbed oxygen.

  • Adsorption of acetylene and hydrogen on Pd(111) : Formation of a well-ordered ethylidyne overlayer
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - 0039-6028. ; 415:3, s. 411-422
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The C2H2(+H)/Pd(111) system has been studied using high resolution core level spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Two ordered phases were found when adsorbing C2H2 at 125 K, giving rise to a (2 × 2) and a (√3 × √3)R30° LEED pattern, respectively. When preadsorbing H at 110-150 K, the sticking probability of the C2H2 molecules is strongly reduced and only the (√3 × √3)R30° overlayer is formed. In all three of the ordered structures the C2H2 molecules are suggested to occupy the hollow sites. Heating of the (√3 × √3)R30° C2H2 + H layer to 350 K yields a well ordered (√3 × √3)R30° overlayer consisting exclusively of ethylidyne (CCH3) positioned in the hollow sites. The formation of ethylidyne is furthermore found to be preceded by the formation of an intermediate species ("β") which probably is vinylidene.

  • Vibrational fine structure in the C 1s photoemission spectrum of the methoxy species chemisorbed on Cu(100)
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - 0039-6028. ; 418:1, s. 210-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The C 1s photoemission spectrum of methoxy (CH3O) chemisorbed on Cu(100) is demonstrated to contain a resolvable fine structure due to excitation of the molecular C-H normal vibrational mode. The origin of the fine structure is ascertained by substituting hydrogen with deuterium in the methoxy overlayers and by comparison to gas-phase C 1s spectra for methanol (CH3OH). The vibrational fine structure is demonstrated to provide a fingerprint of the hydrocarbon group present on the surface.

  • Molecular cloning of rat C4b binding protein alpha- and beta-chains : structural and functional relationships among human, bovine, rabbit, mouse, and rat proteins
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunology. - 0022-1767. ; 158:3, s. 23-1315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The C4b binding protein (C4BP) functions as a regulator of the complement system by interacting with the activated form of the fourth complement component, C4b. Human C4BP also interacts with the anticoagulant protein S and the serum amyloid P component (SAP). It is composed of seven identical 70-kDa alpha-chains and one 45-kDa beta-chain. The alpha-chain contains a binding site for C4b, whereas the beta-chain contains the protein S binding site. Recent studies have shown rabbit and bovine plasma to lack a C4BP-protein S complex, and the mouse beta-chain gene to have evolved into a pseudogene. Using a gel filtration chromatography system in combination with Western blotting, we detected a complex between C4BP and protein S in rat plasma, similar to the complex known in human plasma. Using purified rat C4BP and SAP we were unable to detect any complex between the two proteins, but rat C4BP was able to form a complex with human SAP. Rat cDNA clones encoding the C4BP alpha- and beta-chains were isolated from a rat liver cDNA library. The rat alpha-chain cDNA predicted a mature polypeptide chain of 545 amino acid residues, whereas the beta-chain cDNA predicted a mature polypeptide of 243 amino acid residues. The overall amino acid sequence identities between the rat alpha-chain and the mouse, human, rabbit, and bovine alpha-chains were 64, 60, 59, and 52%, respectively. The identities between the rat beta-chain and the human and bovine beta-chains were 68 and 57%, respectively. The rat represents the first non-primate species in which the C4BP-protein S interaction has been found to be conserved.

  • Secondary aortoenteric fistula : changes from 1973 to 1993
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. - 1078-5884 .- 1532-2165. ; 11:4, s. 425-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To investigate a series of patients with secondary aortoenteric fistulas and compare it with a previous series (1985-93 vs. 1973-84). DESIGN: Retrospective study of medical records. SETTING: Sixteen vascular surgical centers in Sweden. PATIENTS: Twenty-seven patients were identified making an overall incidence of 0.5% of all aortoiliac operations. Among aneurysm patients the incidence was significantly lower than in the previous series. One patient record could not be identified. Fourteen primary operations were for aortic aneurysm, 12 for occlusive disease and one was an aortorenal vein bypass. RESULTS: Symptoms of the fistula occurred after a median interval of 90 months which is significantly later than the previous series (32 months; p<0.05). The commonest presentation was bleeding followed by septis. The median diagnostic delay was 10.5 days, which was significantly shorter than in the previous series. Most fistulas involved the duodenum (88%). One patient died before surgery. The postoperative mortality was 28%, significantly lower than in the previous series (58%) (p<0.05). At the end of follow up (median 43 months) significantly more patients were alive than in the previous series (42% vs 18%) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Over a 21 year period there seems to have been a decrease in the frequency of secondary aortoenteric fistulas after aneurysm surgery, a longer interval before they occur, a shorter diagnostic delay, and a better survival.

  • Effects of 1 year of growth hormone therapy on serum lipoprotein levels in growth hormone-deficient adults. Influence of gender and Apo(a) and ApoE phenotypes.
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology. - 1079-5642. ; 15:12, s. 2142-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated the influence of gender and apoE and apo(a) phenotypes as well as the effect of the metabolic effects of growth hormone (GH) on the effect of GH therapy on serum lipoprotein concentrations in GH-deficient (GHD) adults. Forty-four consecutive patients, 30 men and 14 women aged 46.5 (range, 19 to 76) years with GHD due mainly to pituitary tumors, were treated with recombinant human GH for 12 months. Serum concentrations of lipoproteins, insulin, thyroxine, and insulin-like growth factor-I were determined, body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance, and apo(a) and apoE phenotypes were analyzed. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] concentrations in the GHD subjects were compared with a gender- and apo(a) phenotype-matched control group. After 12 months of GH treatment, the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apoB concentrations decreased, the HDL cholesterol and apoE concentrations increased, and the apoA-I and triglyceride concentrations were unchanged. Before treatment, the Lp(a) concentration was similar to that in the control group. However, after 12 months of treatment, the Lp(a) concentration had increased by 44% and 101% above baseline and the control group, respectively. Men and women responded differently to GH, with a more marked increase in Lp(a) concentration and fat-free mass and a more pronounced decrease in body-fat mass in men. Apo(a) phenotypes had no major influence on the effect of GH therapy. The only significant difference between apoE phenotypes was a higher baseline Lp(a) concentration among apoE4 heterozygotes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

  • On-Line prediction of the tool lLife
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: CIRP Annals - manufacturing technology. - 0007-8506 .- 1726-0604. ; 45:1, s. 93-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a new approach improving the reliability of on-line prediction of tool-life without the need of pre-process data. The ambition has been to develop a robust monitoring strategy feasible fGr practical implementation on a CNC lathe. The tool-life is related to a selected critical point on the tool wear curve. Applied multisensing is based on the cutting force ratio correlated with in-process measurement of the flank wear by a vision system. The acquired process data are evaluated and handled by means of the modified and combined statistical methods. Initial cut is used to monitor the process and to evaluate the model parameters when critical conditions are simultaneously supervised by an additional monitoring method, The process model development, reference value setting and tool-life prediction have been automated as machine tool control features. Traditional tool condition monitoring can be improved by the reduced need of pre-process reference or machinability data, no need of calibrating procedures and, by early prediction of the tool-life with uncertainty of about 15% after 1.5-2.0 minutes of cutting. The efficiency and flexibility of the developed method has been verified by several machinability tests performed under various machining conditions but for the same work material.

  • Blood flow and perfusion pressure during open-chest versus closed-chest cardiopulmonary resuscitation in pigs.
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Critical Care Medicine. - 0090-3493 .- 1530-0293. ; 23:4, s. 715-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the blood flow and perfusion pressure differences observed during open- vs. closed-chest cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including the effects of epinephrine and sodium bicarbonate administration.DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial.SETTING: Experimental animal laboratory in a university hospital.SUBJECTS: A total of 35 anesthetized piglets.INTERVENTIONS: After tracheostomy and insertion of arterial, right atrial, and pulmonary arterial catheters, thoracotomy was performed with placement of a pulmonary arterial flow probe and left atrial catheter. Ventricular fibrillation was induced and followed by 15 mins of either open-chest (n = 14) or closed-chest (n = 21) CPR. A 4-min infusion of 50 mmol of sodium bicarbonate or saline was added at the start of CPR. After 8 mins of CPR, 0.5 mg of epinephrine was given intravenously, and after 15 mins, direct current (DC) shocks were used to revert the heart to sinus rhythm.MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Blood flow was studied using transit-time ultrasound flowmetry. In an extended group, intrathoracic pressure was measured for calculation of transmural pressure. Before epinephrine administration, mean pulmonary arterial flow (cardiac output) was reduced: a) during closed-chest CPR relatively more than pulmonary perfusion pressure but in proportion to systemic perfusion pressure; b) during open-chest CPR relatively less than pulmonary perfusion pressure but still in proportion to systemic perfusion pressure. Epinephrine administration temporarily increased systemic perfusion pressure during both closed- and open-chest CPR but temporarily decreased pulmonary perfusion pressure only during closed-chest CPR. After epinephrine administration, cardiac output temporarily decreased during both closed-and open-chest CPR.CONCLUSIONS: Open-chest CPR resulted in better cardiac output and systemic perfusion pressure than closed-chest CPR. However, cardiac output values obtained with both methods were much lower than previously reported. After epinephrine administration, cardiac output became extremely low with both methods.

  • Elderly patients' meal patterns : A retrospective study
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Journal of human nutrition and dietetics (Print). - 0952-3871 .- 1365-277X. ; 9:4, s. 263-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to examine possible causes of malnutrition in geriatric patients on admission to hospital by evaluation and comparison of their meal pattern between periods of working, retirement and hospitalization, respectively. Forty-five consecutive patients aged 60 years or older participated. By use of modified dietary history interviews, a retrospective assessment of food intake was carried out. A qualitative system for meal classification was then applied. In the retirement period there was a strong reduction in daily eating frequency when compared to working and hospital periods. Thus, the daily intake and also distribution of energy and nutrients seem to be reduced during retirement, which might lead to nutritional deficiency.

  • Food selection in anorectics and bulimics : Food items, nutrient content and nutrient density
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American College of Nutrition (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0731-5724 .- 1541-1087. ; 14:3, s. 271-277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The food selection and nutrient intake were investigated in women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and controls. Methods Dietary data was obtained by 24-hour recall, and 7-day recording among eating disordered patients, and by 3-day registration among controls. Results: The intake of energy and nutrients differed from controls, as expected, while there were no differences between anorectics and bulimics in this respect, except for iron. There were only minor differences among the three groups studied with respect to nutrient density. Energy percentages of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, were similar in all groups, but a subdivision of the macronutrients into respective sources showed that bulimics had a lower relative and absolute intake of carbohydrates from bread and cereals than anorectics and controls. Conclusion: Eating disorder patients, despite their marginal food intake, still met the minimum requirement for most nutrients according to the Nordic Nutrient recommendations. • Comparisons between recalled and observed dietary intake in anorectics and bulimics : A validation study
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of human nutrition and dietetics (Print). - 0952-3871 .- 1365-277X. ; 8:3, s. 201-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A validation study was performed in order to compare the observed versus the self-reported food consumption in anorectics (n = 9), anorectic bulimics (n = 6) and bulimics (n = 10). The observed meals (breakfast, lunch and/or dinner) were served in a hospital setting. Foods on plates were unobtrusively weighed before and after serving to each subject, and the foods consumed were compared with data from a 24-hour recall the subsequent day. Data analyses via a nutrient database comprised amounts of food items from seven food groups as well as energy, macro nutrients, vitamin C, calcium and iron. Analyses of recalled intakes showed consistently high correlations with observed intakes, suggesting that the 24-hour recall gives valid results, and could thus be suitable for this category of patients. This notion contrasts with previous statements, although no validation studies have been undertaken in order to support this view

  • Response of myocardial cellular energy metabolism to variation of buffer composition during open-chest experimental cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the pig.
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Investigation. - 0014-2972 .- 1365-2362. ; 27:5, s. 417-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to investigate possible relationships in piglets between myocardial energy-related metabolites and intracellular electrolytes during open-chest cardiopulmonary resuscitation (OCCPR) supplemented by the administration of alkaline buffers with varying sodium content. Our hypothesis was that an increasing myocardial intracellular sodium content would decrease the intracellular energy stores. In addition to haemodynamics, acid-base and blood gas variables were analysed, and myocardial biopsies were collected before and during OCCPR as well as after the return of spontaneous circulation. After a period of 4 min of untreated ventricular fibrillation (VF). 25 piglets were randomly allocated to one of four groups: OCCPR with normal saline (n = 5); OCCPR with sodium bicarbonate (SB) (n = 7); OCCPR with Tris buffer mixture (TBM) (n = 7); and a totally untreated control group (n = 6). The results showed that 4 min of untreated VF almost eradicated creatine phosphate (CrP) and that the ATP/ADP ratio decreased to 1.5-2.0. During OCCPR with normal saline, the myocardial content of CrP increased, whereas lactate, ATP and ADP levelled off and AMP decreased, causing an increased ATP/ADP ratio. The adenosine and inosine contents increased, whereas inosine monophosphate was unchanged at a low level, the adenosine and inosine contents being inversely correlated with the total content of adenine nucleotides. In both buffered groups, the increase in most energy-related metabolites (CrP, ATP, ADP, AMP and the ATP/ADP quotient) was less and in lactate more pronounced than in the group not being buffered, with no difference between the groups receiving SB or TBM. Although the intracellular potassium content was unaltered, the sodium, chloride and calcium concentration increased, more so in the group receiving SB. The intracellular content of sodium was correlated with that of calcium. Thus, buffering increased the myocardial AMP degradation during OCCPR by increasing the flux via the 5'-nucleotidase reaction, and SB increased the intracellular contents of sodium and calcium to a greater extent than did TBM.
