    • Key Odin operational and instrumental features and highlights from our sub-millimetre and millimetre wave observations of H2O, H218O, NH3, 15NH3 and O2 are presented, with some insights into accompanying Odin Letters in this A&A issue. We focus on new results where Odin's high angular resolution, high frequency resolution, large spectrometer bandwidths, high sensitivity or/and frequency tuning capability are crucial: H2O mapping of the Orion KL, W3, DR21, S140 regions, and four comets; H2O observations of Galactic Centre sources, of shock enhanced H2O towards the SNR IC443, and of the candidate infall source IRAS 16293-2422; H218O detections in Orion KL and in comet Ikeya-Zhang; sub-mm detections of NH3 in Orion KL (outflow, ambient cloud and bar) and ρ Oph, and very recently, of 15NH3 in~Orion KL. Simultaneous sensitive searches for the 119 GHz line of O2 have resulted in very low abundance limits, which are difficult to accomodate in chemical models. We also demonstrate, by means of a quantitative comparison of Orion KL H2O results, that the Odin and SWAS observational data sets are very consistently calibrated. Odin is a Swedish-led satellite project funded jointly by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes), and the Centre National d'études Spatiales (CNES, France). The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) has been the prime industrial contractor, and is also responsible for the satellite operation from its Odin Mission Control Centre at SSC in Solna and its Odin Control Centre at ESRANGE near Kiruna in northern Sweden.   • Symptoms, findings and treatment in patients with dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal

    • Recently Minor and co-workers described patients with sound- and pressure-induced vertigo due to dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal. Identifying patients with this 'new' vestibular entity is important, not only because the symptoms are sometimes very incapacitating, but also because they can be treated. We present symptoms and findings in eight such patients, all of whom reported pressure-induced vertigo that increased during periods of upper respiratory infections. Pulse-synchronous tinnitus and gaze instability during head movements were also common complaints. All patients lateralized Weber's test to the symptomatic ear. In some of the patients the audiogram also revealed a small conductive hearing loss. However, the stapedius reflexes were always normal. A vertical/torsional eye movement related to the superior semicircular canal was seen in most of the patients in response to pressure changes and/or sound stimulation. One patient also had superior canal-related positioning nystagmus. Testing vestibular evoked myogenic potentials revealed in all patients a vestibular hypersensitivity to sounds. In the coronal high-resolution 1-mm section CT scans the dehiscence was visible on 1 to 4 sections. Moreover, the skull base was rather thin in this area and cortical bone separating the middle ear and the antrum from the middle cranial fossa was absent in many of the patients. Two of the patients have undergone plugging of the superior semicircular canal using a transmastoid approach and both patients were relieved of the pressure-induced symptoms.

  • Distribution of respiratory mucin proteins in human nasal mucosa

    • Objectives/Hypothesis: The upper respiratory tract is involved in many acute and chronic respiratory tract diseases that present with the symptom of mucus hypersecretion. Mucin genes that encode for the backbone of glycoproteins contribute to the viscoelastic property of airway mucus. We examined the cellular expression and distribution of two major respiratory mucus-forming glycoproteins, MUC5AC and MUC5B, in normal human nasal tissues. Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis using polyclonal antibodies against the mucins MUC5AC and MUC5B was performed in normal human nasal tissues. Results: An abundant staining of submucosal mucus gland and epithelial goblet cells for MUC5B was found. hnmunohistochemical analysis of MUC5AC showed staining of surface epithelium goblet cells, whereas there was no staining of glandular cells. Comparison of the expression to lower airways revealed a similar pattern of expression of both mucins. Conclusions: The data in the present study demonstrated the localization of the two major respiratory mucin proteins in human nasal mucosa with a similar distribution of expression of MUC5AC and MUC5B in normal upper and lower airways. Mucin protein expression parallels that of mucin messenger RNA expression.
