  • Re-positive Cases of Nucleic Acid Tests in Discharged Patients With COVID-19 : A Follow-Up Study

    • Background: The frequent emergence of the re-positive patients with COVID-19 is a potential threat worldwide. This study aimed to describe data from admission to follow-up for patients with COVID-19 and analyze the possible causes for re-positive nucleic acid tests to provide more scientific basis for reducing the numbers of re-positive patients after discharge. Methods: We retrospectively recorded 15 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the Xianyang Central Hospital, China. The baseline, exposure histories, clinical syndromes, laboratory characteristics, nucleic acid, and follow-up tests were analyzed, and the radiological characteristics of re-positive patient at different periods were compared. Results: Eight (53.33%) patients had the history of travel to Wuhan, four (26.67%) patients had close contact with confirmed patients, and one (6.67%) patient had close contact with suspected patients. After treatment, all patients had two consecutively negative nucleic acid tests and were discharged from hospital. All patients were followed up for more than 14 days, and the average time from discharge to the first follow-up was 14.67 ± 3.31 days (from 9 to 22 days). Most patients showed no clinical symptoms and negative nucleic acid tests, while one patient had an itchy throat, her CT scan showed a light density shadow in the right lower lobe of the lung, and the nucleic acid was once again positive. The second follow-up of the other 14 patients (except the re-positive one) was conducted 20.80 ± 7.78 days (from 13 to 30 days) after discharge, and all of them had negative nucleic acid tests. The positive patient was immediately readmitted and received a new round of treatment. Her family members and colleagues remained healthy until now. Conclusions: The quality of nucleic acid testing reagents should be enhanced, and the training of nucleic acid sampling operators should be strengthened to reduce the false-negative results in the nucleic acid of SARS-CoV-2; the clinical specimens of throat and nasopharynx swabs can be collected at the same time; IgM- and IgG-specific antibodies of SARS-CoV-2 should be carried out for discharged patients; the radiological characteristics should be evaluated strictly; and the discharge standard can be specified according to the baseline and severity of disease of patients.

  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

    • In this paper, the idea of offset spatial modulation (OSM) is integrated with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), toward an efficient design to bridge their advantages. Compared to its conventional counterpart as spatial modulation (SM)-OFDM, the proposed OSM-OFDM scheme aims at providing a simplified implementation structure with less number of radio frequency (RF) chains, by introducing an offset between the RF chain and the index of the activated transmit antenna on each subcarrier. Specifically, three types of offset antenna selection (OAS) methods are developed to meet different scene requirements for different number of available RF chains. Furthermore, through theoretical analysis, we quantify the bit error rate upper bounds of OSM-OFDM with different types of OAS methods. Finally, extensive computer simulations demonstrate that OSM-OFDM provides a flexible tradeoff among implementation cost, computation complexity and error performance.

  • Simulating neutron transport in long beamlines at a spallation neutron source using Geant4

    • The transport of neutrons in long beamlines at spallation neutron sources presents a unique challenge for Monte-Carlo transport calculations. This is due to the need to accurately model the deep-penetration of high-energy neutrons through meters of thick dense shields close to the source and at the same time to model the transport of low- energy neutrons across distances up to around 150 m in length. Typically, such types of calculations may be carried out with MCNP-based codes or alternatively PHITS. However, in recent years there has been an increased interest in the suitability of Geant4 for such types of calculations. Therefore, we have implemented supermirror physics, a neutron chopper module and the duct-source variance reduction technique for low- energy neutron transport from the PHITS Monte-Carlo code into Geant4. In the current work, we present a series of benchmarks of these extensions with the PHITS software, which demonstrates the suitability of Geant4 for simulating long neutron beamlines at a spallation neutron source, such as the European Spallation Source, currently under construction in Lund, Sweden.

    • Tumor-normal paired DNA samples from a breast cancer cell line and a matched lymphoblastoid cell line enable calibration of clinical sequencing pipelines and benchmarking 'tumor-only' or 'matched tumor-normal' analyses. The lack of samples for generating standardized DNA datasets for setting up a sequencing pipeline or benchmarking the performance of different algorithms limits the implementation and uptake of cancer genomics. Here, we describe reference call sets obtained from paired tumor-normal genomic DNA (gDNA) samples derived from a breast cancer cell line-which is highly heterogeneous, with an aneuploid genome, and enriched in somatic alterations-and a matched lymphoblastoid cell line. We partially validated both somatic mutations and germline variants in these call sets via whole-exome sequencing (WES) with different sequencing platforms and targeted sequencing with >2,000-fold coverage, spanning 82% of genomic regions with high confidence. Although the gDNA reference samples are not representative of primary cancer cells from a clinical sample, when setting up a sequencing pipeline, they not only minimize potential biases from technologies, assays and informatics but also provide a unique resource for benchmarking 'tumor-only' or 'matched tumor-normal' analyses.

  • Planting Age Identification and Yield Prediction of Apple Orchard Using Time-Series Spectral Endmember and Logistic Growth Model

    • In response to significant shifts in dietary and lifestyle preferences, the global demand for fruits has increased dramatically, especially for apples, which are consumed worldwide. Growing apple orchards of more productive and higher quality with limited land resources is the way forward. Precise planting age identification and yield prediction are indispensable for the apple market in terms of sustainable supply, price regulation, and planting management. The planting age of apple trees significantly determines productivity, quality, and yield. Therefore, we integrated the time-series spectral endmember and logistic growth model (LGM) to accurately identify the planting age of apple orchard, and we conducted planting age-driven yield prediction using a neural network model. Firstly, we fitted the time-series spectral endmember of green photosynthetic vegetation (GV) with the LGM. By using the four-points method, the environmental carrying capacity (ECC) in the LGM was available, which serves as a crucial parameter to determine the planting age. Secondly, we combined annual planting age with historical apple yield to train the back propagation (BP) neural network model and obtained the predicted apple yields for 12 counties. The results show that the LGM method can accurately estimate the orchard planting age, with Mean Absolute Error (MAE) being 1.76 and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) being 2.24. The strong correlation between orchard planting age and apple yield was proved. The results of planting age-driven yield prediction have high accuracy, with the MAE up to 2.95% and the RMSE up to 3.71%. This study provides a novel method to accurately estimate apple orchard planting age and yields, which can support policy formulation and orchard planning in the future.

    • IntroductionSex differences in dementia risk, and risk factor (RF) associations with dementia, remain uncertain across diverse ethno-regional groups. MethodsA total of 29,850 participants (58% women) from 21 cohorts across six continents were included in an individual participant data meta-analysis. Sex-specific hazard ratios (HRs), and women-to-men ratio of hazard ratios (RHRs) for associations between RFs and all-cause dementia were derived from mixed-effect Cox models. ResultsIncident dementia occurred in 2089 (66% women) participants over 4.6 years (median). Women had higher dementia risk (HR, 1.12 [1.02, 1.23]) than men, particularly in low- and lower-middle-income economies. Associations between longer education and former alcohol use with dementia risk (RHR, 1.01 [1.00, 1.03] per year, and 0.55 [0.38, 0.79], respectively) were stronger for men than women; otherwise, there were no discernible sex differences in other RFs. DiscussionDementia risk was higher in women than men, with possible variations by country-level income settings, but most RFs appear to work similarly in women and men.

    • Hybrid plasmonic nanostructures have gained enormous attention in a variety of optoelectronic devices due to their surface plasmon resonance properties. Self-assembled hybrid metal/quantum dot (QD) architectures offer a means of coupling the properties of plasmonics and QDs to photodetectors, thereby modifying their functionality. The arrangement and localization of hybrid nanostructures have an impact on exciton trapping and light harvesting. Here, we present a hybrid structure consisting of self-assembled gold nanospheres (Au NSs) embedded in a solid matrix of PbS QDs for mapping the interface structures and the motion of charge carriers. Grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering is utilized to analyze the localization and spacing of the Au NSs within the hybrid structure. Furthermore, by correlating the morphology of the Au NSs in the hybrid structure with the corresponding differences observed in the performance of photodetectors, we are able to determine the impact of interface charge carrier dynamics in the coupling structure. From the perspective of architecture, our study provides insights into the performance improvement of optoelectronic devices.

  • Establishing a Urine-Based Biomarker Assay for Prostate Cancer Risk Stratification

    • One of the major features of prostate cancer (PCa) is its heterogeneity, which often leads to uncertainty in cancer diagnostics and unnecessary biopsies as well as overtreatment of the disease. Novel non-invasive tests using multiple biomarkers that can identify clinically high-risk cancer patients for immediate treatment and monitor patients with low-risk cancer for active surveillance are urgently needed to improve treatment decision and cancer management. In this study, we identified 14 promising biomarkers associated with PCa and tested the performance of these biomarkers on tissue specimens and pre-biopsy urinary sediments. These biomarkers showed differential gene expression in higher- and lower-risk PCa. The 14-Gene Panel urine test (PMP22, GOLM1, LMTK2, EZH2, GSTP1, PCA3, VEGFA, CST3, PTEN, PIP5K1A, CDK1, TMPRSS2, ANXA3, and CCND1) was assessed in two independent prospective and retrospective urine study cohorts and showed high diagnostic accuracy to identify higher-risk PCa patients with the need for treatment and lower-risk patients for surveillance. The AUC was 0.897 (95% CI 0.939–0.855) in the prospective cohort (n = 202), and AUC was 0.899 (95% CI 0.964–0.834) in the retrospective cohort (n = 97). In contrast, serum PSA and Gleason score had much lower accuracy in the same 202 patient cohorts [AUC was 0.821 (95% CI 0.879–0.763) for PSA and 0.860 (95% CI 0.910–0.810) for Gleason score]. In addition, the 14-Gene Panel was more accurate at risk stratification in a subgroup of patients with Gleason scores 6 and 7 in the prospective cohort (n = 132) with AUC of 0.923 (95% CI 0.968–0.878) than PSA [AUC of 0.773 (95% CI 0.852–0.794)] and Gleason score [AUC of 0.776 (95% CI 0.854–0.698)]. Furthermore, the 14-Gene Panel was found to be able to accurately distinguish PCa from benign prostate with AUC of 0.854 (95% CI 0.892–0.816) in a prospective urine study cohort (n = 393), while PSA had lower accuracy with AUC of 0.652 (95% CI 0.706–0.598). Taken together, the 14-Gene Panel urine test represents a promising non-invasive tool for detection of higher-risk PCa to aid treatment decision and lower-risk PCa for active surveillance.

    • In this paper, we propose a novel maximum distance separable (MDS) code based and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted wireless communication system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Specifically, input bits are firstly divided into groups and their MDS codes are utilized to decide the amplitudes and phases of subcarriers. The introduction of the MDS code helps to increase the minimum Hamming distance between symbols and improve on the capability of error detection. Besides, the RIS is adopted to create additional paths between the radio frequency (RF) and the receiver as well as alter the signal phases with derived optimal solution. Benefiting from the strength of the RIS, the proposed system can better overcome multipath fading compared with conventional systems. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed system in terms of reducing bit error rate (BER) through multipath channels.

    • The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the cause of a rapidly spreading illness, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), affecting more than seventeen million people around the world. Diagnosis and treatment guidelines for clinicians caring for patients are needed. In the early stage, we have issued "A rapid advice guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infected pneumonia (standard version)"; now there are many direct evidences emerged and may change some of previous recommendations and it is ripe for develop an evidence-based guideline. We formed a working group of clinical experts and methodologists. The steering group members proposed 29 questions that are relevant to the management of COVID-19 covering the following areas: chemoprophylaxis, diagnosis, treatments, and discharge management. We searched the literature for direct evidence on the management of COVID-19, and assessed its certainty generated recommendations using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Recommendations were either strong or weak, or in the form of ungraded consensus-based statement. Finally, we issued 34 statements. Among them, 6 were strong recommendations for, 14 were weak recommendations for, 3 were weak recommendations against and 11 were ungraded consensus-based statement. They covered topics of chemoprophylaxis (including agents and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) agents), diagnosis (including clinical manifestations, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respiratory tract specimens, IgM and IgG antibody tests, chest computed tomography, chest x-ray, and CT features of asymptomatic infections), treatments (including lopinavir-ritonavir, umifenovir, favipiravir, interferon, remdesivir, combination of antiviral drugs, hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine, interleukin-6 inhibitors, interleukin-1 inhibitors, glucocorticoid, qingfei paidu decoction, lianhua qingwen granules/capsules, convalescent plasma, lung transplantation, invasive or noninvasive ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)), and discharge management (including discharge criteria and management plan in patients whose RT-PCR retesting shows SARS-CoV-2 positive after discharge). We also created two figures of these recommendations for the implementation purpose. We hope these recommendations can help support healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients.

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2021 is the ninth annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 71 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in recent years. The VOT2021 challenge was composed of four sub-challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2021 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2021 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2021 focused on long-term tracking, namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance and (iv) VOT-RGBD2021 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2021 dataset was refreshed, while VOT-RGBD2021 introduces a training dataset and sequestered dataset for winner identification. The source code for most of the trackers, the datasets, the evaluation kit and the results along with the source code for most trackers are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Assembly and succession of the phyllosphere microbiome and nutrient-cycling genes during plant community development in a glacier foreland

    • The phyllosphere, particularly the leaf surface of plants, harbors a diverse range of microbiomes that play a vital role in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. However, our understanding of microbial successions and their impact on functional genes during plant community development is limited. In this study, considering core and satellite microbial taxa, we characterized the phyllosphere microbiome and functional genes in various microhabitats (i.e., leaf litter, moss and plant leaves) across the succession of a plant community in a low-altitude glacier foreland. Our findings indicate that phyllosphere microbiomes and associated ecosystem stability increase during the succession of the plant community. The abundance of core taxa increased with plant community succession and was primarily governed by deterministic processes. In contrast, satellite taxa abundance decreased during plant community succession and was mainly governed by stochastic processes. The abundance of microbial functional genes (such as C, N, and P hydrolysis and fixation) in plant leaves generally increased during the plant community succession. However, in leaf litter and moss leaves, only a subset of functional genes (e.g., C fixation and degradation, and P mineralization) showed a tendency to increase with plant community succession. Ultimately, the community of both core and satellite taxa collaboratively influenced the characteristics of phyllosphere nutrient-cycling genes, leading to the diverse profiles and fluctuating abundance of various functional genes during plant community succession. These findings offer valuable insights into the phyllosphere microbiome and plant–microbe interactions during plant community development, advancing our understanding of the succession and functional significance of the phyllosphere microbial community.

    • With the rapid development of wireless communications, the signals may be transmitted in different media, such as visible light and millimeter-wave along the communication path. In this case, there will be different devices working in different media, which cannot directly communicate to each other. For alleviating this problem, we first conceive a cross-media communication scenario where two devices for different media could communicate with the aid of a relay working in both media. Furthermore, we derive the average outage probability of the uplink and downlink communications. Finally, aiming at minimizing the derived average outage probability, the optimal power allocation (PA) scheme at the relay side is also derived and verified by simulation results.

    • MAX phases are gaining attention as precursors of two-dimensional MXenes that are intensively pursued in applications for electrochemical energy storage. Here, we report the preparation of V2SnC MAX phase by the molten salt method. V2SnC is investigated as a lithium storage anode, showing a high gravimetric capacity of 490 mAh g(-1) and volumetric capacity of 570 mAh cm(-3) as well as superior rate performance of 95 mAh g(-1) (110 mAh cm(-3)) at 50 C, surpassing the ever-reported performance of MAX phase anodes. Supported by operando X-ray diffraction and density functional theory, a charge storage mechanism with dual redox reaction is proposed with a Sn-Li (de)alloying reaction that occurs at the edge sites of V2SnC particles where Sn atoms are exposed to the electrolyte followed by a redox reaction that occurs at V2C layers with Li. This study offers promise of using MAX phases with M-site and A-site elements that are redox active as high-rate lithium storage materials.

    • Offset spatial modulation (OSM) is an attractive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme, which alleviates the switching frequency limitation of the radio frequency chain in the spatial modulation technology. In this article, we investigate the bit error performance of OSM in the presence of imperfect channel estimation toward a practical transmission scenario. More specifically, with the aid of union bound technique, a general performance analysis framework of the OSM system with channel estimation errors is proposed. Based on the above analysis framework, the upper bounds of bit error rate for the static and dynamic modes of OSM are both derived, respectively. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the analytical bounds are tight for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and variable system configurations.

    • This paper proposes a precoded optical space-domain index modulation scheme for indoor visible light communications, which is based on optimization of the minimum Euclidean distance in optical spatial modulation (OSM) with real-valued modulation constellations. We find that the precoding matrix design can be formulated as a non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) problem, whose solution is generally intractable. To tackle this problem, we first consider the case of two optical transmit antennas (Nt = 2) in precoded OSM and derive the closed-form solution for arbitrary M-order pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). Based on the derived solutions and the error vector reduction method, we then propose a low-complexity iterative (LCI) algorithm to identify the precoding matrix for the cases of Nt > 2. To strike a flexible complexity-BER (bit error rate) tradeoff, we propose a successive convex approximation (SCA)-assisted matrix-based optimization method to transform the non-convex QCQP problem into a series of linear convex subproblems, which can easily be solved by low-complexity solvers. Simulation results show that these proposed algorithms are capable of substantially improving the system error performance compared with conventional OSM systems. Besides, the symbol-based SCA algorithm is introduced and it outperforms the matrix-based SCA and the suboptimal LCI algorithm in terms of the BER.

    • To investigate the prevalence, probable mechanisms and serotype correlation of colistin resistance in clinical isolates of Salmonella from patients in China, Salmonella isolates were collected from fecal and blood samples of patients. In this study, 42.8% (136/318) clinical isolated Salmonella were resistant to colistin. MIC distribution for colistin at serotype level among the two most prevalent serotypes originating from humans in China indicated that Salmonella Enteritidis (83.9% resistance, 125/149) were significantly less susceptible than Salmonella Typhimurium (15.3% resistance, 9/59, P < 0.01). mcr genes and mutations in PmrAB confer little for rate of colistin resistant Salmonella isolated from human patients. Phylogenetic tree based on core-genome single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was separately by the serotypes and implied a diffused distribution of MICs in the same serotype isolates. Relatvie expression levels of colistin resistant related pmr genes were significantly higher in non-mcr colistin resistant S. Typhimurium than in colistin sensitive S. Typhimurium, but no discernable differences between colistin resistant and sensitive S. Enteritidis, indicating a different mechanism between colistin resistant S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis. In conclusion, colistin susceptibility and colistin resistant mechanism of clinical isolated Salmonella were closely associated with specific serotypes, at least in the two most prevalent serotype Enteritidis and Typhimurium. We suggest clinical microbiology laboratory interpreting Salmonella colistin MIC results in the serotype level.

    • High-index semiconductor nanoantennae represent a powerful platform for nonlinear photon generation. Devices with reduced footprints are pivotal for higher integration capacity and energy efficiency in photonic integrated circuitry (PIC). Here, we report on a deep subwavelength nonlinear antenna based on dilute nitride GaNP nanowires (NWs), whose second harmonic generation (SHG) shows a 5-fold increase by incorporating similar to 0.45% of nitrogen (N), in comparison with GaP counterpart. Further integrating with a gold (Au) thin film-based hybrid cavity achieves a significantly boosted SHG output by a factor of similar to 380, with a nonlinear conversion efficiency up to 9.4 x 10(-6) W-1. In addition, high-density zinc blende (ZB) twin phases were found to tailor the nonlinear radiation profile via dipolar interference, resulting in a highly symmetric polarimetric pattern well-suited for coupling with polarization nano-optics. Our results manifest dilute nitride nanoantenna as promising building blocks for future chip-based nonlinear photonic technology.

    • High-temperature body-centered cubic (BCC) gamma-U is effectively stablized by gamma-(U,Zr) alloys that also make it feasible to use it as a nuclear fuel. However, relatively little research has focused on gamma-(U,Zr) alloys due to their instability at room temperature. The effect of Zr composition on its mechanical properties is not clear yet. Herein, we perform molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the mechanical and dynamical stabilities of gamma-(U,Zr) alloys under high temperatures, and we calculate the corresponding lattice constants, various elastic moduli, Vickers hardness, Debye temperature, and dynamical structure factor. The results showed that gamma-U, beta-Zr, and gamma-(U,Zr) are all mechanically and dynamically stable at 1200 K, which is in good agreement with the previously reported high-temperature phase diagram of U-Zr alloys. We found that the alloying treatment on ?-U with Zr can effectively improve its mechanical strength and melting points, such as Vickers hardness and Debye temperature, making it more suitable for nuclear reactors. Furthermore, the Zr concentrations in gamma-(U,Zr) alloys have an excellent effect on these properties. In addition, the dynamical structure factor reveals that gamma-U shows different structural features after alloying with Zr. The present simulation data and insights could be significant for understanding the structures and properties of UZr alloy under high temperatures.

    • Human embryonic stem cell-derived β cells (SC-β cells) hold great promise for treatment of diabetes, yet how to achieve functional maturation and protect them against metabolic stresses such as glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity remains elusive. Our single-cell RNA-seq analysis reveals that ZnT8 loss of function (LOF) accelerates the functional maturation of SC-β cells. As a result, ZnT8 LOF improves glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) by releasing the negative feedback of zinc inhibition on insulin secretion. Furthermore, we demonstrate that ZnT8 LOF mutations endow SC-β cells with resistance to lipotoxicity/glucotoxicity-triggered cell death by alleviating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through modulation of zinc levels. Importantly, transplantation of SC-β cells with ZnT8 LOF into mice with preexisting diabetes significantly improves glycemia restoration and glucose tolerance. These findings highlight the beneficial effect of ZnT8 LOF on the functional maturation and survival of SC-β cells that are useful as a potential source for cell replacement therapies.

    • Recently, communications with the aid of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which operates with the aim of enhancing the system communication performance, have aroused extensive researches. Furthermore, the use of RIS for positioning has been considered. Therefore, we focus on a practical structure of indoor positioning assisted by distributed RISs through utilizing their ability to manipulate multipath signals, through the developed quasi-static and dynamic modes. Specifically, in the quasi-static mode, for reducing the implementation cost, the reflection coefficients for each RIS are preset and remain constant. In the dynamic mode, the reflection coefficients can be timely updated with a two-step positioning approach toward more accurate positioning performance. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound of the developed positioning scheme is quantified through theoretical analysis. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that RIS has the potential to realize accurate positioning even with a single access point, due to its ability to mark the channel and replace traditional active positioning anchors. Meanwhile, we also show that the developed two-step positioning scheme can achieve considerable performance gain in accurate positioning.

    • Future wireless networks will witness ubiquitous human-machine interactions, where extended reality (XR) is expected to be a key scenario in next-generation mobile systems. In this article, we examine the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework in XR, where a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) may assist user (UE) positioning and communication. Specifically, a practical positioning algorithm based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) with the aid of specially designed RIS configurations is conceived. Furthermore, we formulate the joint optimization of the UE beamformer and RIS phase shifter to maximize the channel capacity under Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) constraints, which is solved by alternating optimization with gradient projection and manifold optimization. Finally, we use simulation results to demonstrate the feasibility of the conceived positioning algorithm and corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization approach.

    • As a revolutionary technology for future wireless communications, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), characterized by an efficient way of manipulating wireless signals, has been widely investigated in recent years toward enhancing signal quality, energy efficiency, throughput, and so on. However, in RIS-assisted Internet of Things (IoT), a new issue as multipath separation emerges, especially, when deploying multiple RISs to assist communication, since the devices may have limited signal processing capabilities. For alleviating this problem, we conceive a novel RIS-enabled code-division multiple access (CDMA) structure, where each RIS holds a specified time-varying coefficient to tag the channel. Moreover, multipath extraction is further considered, including a practical channel estimation approach along with theoretical derivations in terms of Cramér-Rao lower bound, mean-square error, as well as ergodic channel capacity. Simulation results corroborate the feasibility of the conceived RIS-CDMA structure and the effectiveness of the proposed multipath extraction approach.

    • Prolactin binding to the prolactin receptor exerts pleiotropic biological effects in vertebrates. The prolactin receptor (PRLR) has multiple isoforms due to alternative splicing. The biological roles and related signaling of the long isoform (PRLR-LF) have been fully elucidated. However, little is known about the short isoform (PRLR-SF), particularly in cancer development and metabolic reprogramming, a core hallmark of cancer. Here, we reveal the role and underlying mechanism of PRLR-SF in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Methods: A human PDAC tissue array was used to investigate the clinical relevance of PRLR in PDAC. The in vivo implications of PRLR-SF in PDAC were examined in a subcutaneous xenograft model and an orthotopic xenograft model. Immunohistochemistry was performed on tumor tissue obtained from genetically engineered KPC (KrasG12D/+; Trp53R172H/+; Pdx1-Cre) mice with spontaneous tumors. 13C-labeled metabolite measures, LC-MS, EdU incorporation assays and seahorse analyses were used to identify the effects of PRLR-SF on the pentose phosphate pathway and glycolysis. We identified the molecular mechanisms by immunofluorescence, coimmunoprecipitation, proximity ligation assays, chromatin immunoprecipitation and promoter luciferase activity. Public databases (TCGA, GEO and GTEx) were used to analyze the expression and survival correlations of the related genes. Results: We demonstrated that PRLR-SF is predominantly expressed in spontaneously forming pancreatic tumors of genetically engineered KPC mice and human PDAC cell lines. PRLR-SF inhibits the proliferation of PDAC cells (AsPC-1 and BxPC-3) in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. We showed that PRLR-SF reduces the expression of genes in the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) and nucleotide biosynthesis by activating Hippo signaling. TEAD1, a downstream transcription factor of Hippo signaling, directly regulates the expression of G6PD and TKT, which are PPP rate-limiting enzymes. Moreover, NEK9 directly interacts with PRLR-SF and is the intermediator between PRLR and the Hippo pathway. The PRLR expression level is negatively correlated with overall survival and TNM stage in PDAC patients. Additionally, pregnancy and lactation increase the ratio of PRLR-SF:PRLR-LF in the pancreas of wild-type mice and subcutaneous PDAC xenograft tumors. Conclusion: Our characterization of the relationship between PRLR-SF signaling, the NEK9-Hippo pathway, PPP and nucleotide synthesis explains a mechanism for the correlation between PRLR-SF and metabolic reprogramming in PDAC progression. Strategies to alter this pathway might be developed for the treatment or prevention of pancreatic cancer.

    • Artificial noise (AN), aiming to disturb the eavesdropper while avoiding the influence on the legitimate receiver, has arisen as an excellent technology for improving the physical-layer security of wireless communications. In order to challenge AN, zero-forcing elimination (ZFE) has been introduced as a possible countermeasure to mitigate the AN for the eavesdropper at the cost of more available receive antennas. In this contribution, from the perspective of eavesdroppers, we further conceive a class of efficient null-space elimination (NSE) schemes in order to reduce the number of receive antennas while enhancing the detection quality compared to original ZFE. Furthermore, the performance of secrecy rate as well as bit-error rate (BER) is quantified for both ZFE and NSE schemes through theoretical derivation, while the influence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) is also evaluated. The performance comparison of the above-mentioned schemes illustrates that NSE can provide more robust performance for eavesdroppers over ZFE, with lower hardware requirements as well as moderate complexity increase.

Specifically, the initial problem is divided into the following two processes: i) optimizing the beamforming vector with fixed PSs, ii) determining a specific PS based on a closedform solution when the other PSs and beamforming are fixed. Simulation results corroborate that the proposed AD method provides robust attainable performance with reduced computational complexity compared to its traditional counterparts.

Specifically, for achieving the trade-off between the reliability and security of transmission, the phase shifts (PSs) and beamforming are jointly designed based on the oblique manifold (OM) algorithm (Wang et al., 2020) without eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI). In order to alleviate the computational complexity, a novel alternating direction (AD) algorithm is proposed in this contribution. Specifically, the initial problem is transformed into several subproblems, each of which determines a specific RIS unit via a closed-form solution when the other configurations are fixed. Furthermore, the AD algorithm is investigated to exhibit the low-complexity advantage in contrast to OM. Simulation results illustrate that AD can converge faster and more stably compared to OM with the same performance.

In this paper, we investigate the issue of ANE without the CSI of Alice-Bob link by minimizing the artificial-noise-to-signal ratio (ANSR). Moreover, the detailed minor component analysis (MCA) algorithm is presented, and the computational complexity is quantified. Simulation results demonstrate that MCA can effectively degrade the influence of AN without the knowledge of CSI.

    • In this article, a novel multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) transmission scheme, called generalized polarized enhanced spatial modulation (GPESM), is proposed for dual-polarized land mobile satellite (LMS) communications. We first introduce the enhanced spatial modulation (ESM) technique for dual-polarized LMS communications, in which polarization dimension, spatial dimension and multiple signal constellations are used to transmit information and obtain substantial performance gain. Meanwhile, the theoretical upper bound for the average bit error probability (ABEP) of the proposed GPESM scheme is derived. In order to further improve the reliability of the system, we also propose two novel power allocation (PA) algorithms for GPESM system, which are the optimization-driven approximated max-min distance (AMMD)-based PA algorithm and the data-driven deep neural network (DNN)-based PA algorithm. To achieve an enhanced spatial diversity gain, we consider to apply a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to the GPESM system as a relay to assist in transmitting information. In this way, the user can receive the information transmitted by the satellite on one hand, and the information sent by the satellite via the RIS relay on the other hand. We also extend the above-mentioned two PA algorithms to the RIS-assisted GPESM systems. Our simulation results show that the RIS-assisted GPESM systems are capable of obtaining high bit error rate (BER) performance gain (up to 10 dB) compared to the standard GPESM system and two PA algorithms can further improve the performance to the systems.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the pathogenicity associated with different combinations of genotypes (i.e., sequence types, virulence factors, and capsular serotypes) and phenotypes (i.e., hypermucoviscosity and drug susceptibility) inK. pneumoniae.A total of 11K. pneumoniaeisolates causing bloodstream infections were included in the study, and they were assigned to seven STs (ST23, ST15, ST268, ST660, ST86, ST65, and ST1660) and carried various K-loci (KL1, KL2, KL16, KL20, and KL24). Hypermucoviscosity was observed for six isolates.bla(KPC-2)was detected in six carbapenem-resistant isolates, and the remaining ones were either multidrug-resistant or resistant to two types of antibiotics. Aerobactin- and yersiniabactin-encoding genes were detected in all isolates. AlthoughrmpA2was detected in all isolates, most contained frameshift mutations (82%). Genes encoding salmochelin, RmpA, and PEG344 were detected in seven isolates. Colibactin-encoding genes were carried by six isolates. Discrepancies among measured virulence inGalleria mellonellaand the serum-killing assay, and genotypes and phenotypes were detected. The results illustrate the complexity and difficulty with the current knowledge of hypervirulence to predict the phenotype by using genetic and phenotypic markers. Additionally, the emergence of carbapenem resistance in two isolates of KPC-2-producing hvKP of different sequence types emphasizes the urgency with which reliable clinical diagnostics for hvKP is needed.

    • The short exciton diffusion length associated with most state-of-the-art organic semiconductors used in organic solar cells (OSCs) imposes severe limits on the exciton transport in the larger donor/acceptor domains and the exciton dissociation at the interface, which hinder further improvements in the power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of the thick-film devices. In this study, a new cyclane, 1,5-diiodocycloctane (DICO), was employed as a solvent additive to effectively extend the exciton LD within the bulk-heterojunction blend, which can function with the multiple photovoltaic materials system. Due to the great enhancement of molecular stacking and exclusively large domain sizes of photovoltaic materials with the assistance of the DICO additive, the trap density in devices is significantly reduced, thereby nearly doubling the LD in the thick film OSCs. Notably, the DICO-processed PM6/L8-BO-based OSC showed high thickness tolerance for the bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) layer, delivering a high PCE of 19.1% in the case of a 110 nm thick film and still maintaining an excellent PCE of 17.2% in the case of a 300 nm thick film. Crucially, a noticeably increased stability of the multiple materials system was observed in the DICO-processed OSCs. These findings enrich the additive family with new cyclane systems to extend the exciton LD in thick film OSCs with high performance.

However, the above superiority is achieved in the context of a configuration of specific code rate thus far, which limits the flexibility in real use. Against this backdrop, this paper introduces a new code construction under the union upper bound (UUB) in accordance with the Hamming weight spectrum. What's more, we combine such construction with Reed-Muller (RM) design rule by efficiently selecting bit-channels on the basis of Hamming distance.     • Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) enriches many leachable toxic metals which readily migrate into the environment, posing serious risks to the ecosystem and human. In this study, the elements mobility, leaching availability as well as the potential maximum amounts of heavy metals in fly ash were thoroughly evaluated. To decontaminate the toxic elements from resulting fly ash leachates, The aqueous zinc (Zn) was recovered using Cyanex 572, cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) were effectively removed through adsorption process by a self-assembled hierarchical hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanostructure. The removal mechanism of Cd, Cu and Zn by leaching, extraction and adsorption was revealed with the results from XRD, ICP-MS and SEM. The results showed that fly ash has a high mobility under maximum availability leaching test (95% of fly ash was dissolved), a recovery rate of 91% for Zn can be obtained using Cyanex 572, and a high adsorption rate (> 95% for both Cu and Cd) was reached using HAP for the pristine fly ash leachate. The outcomes from isothermal and kinetic study revealed that Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order model can well describe the Cd and Cu adsorption behavior. Economic assessment suggested that the application of HAP for the removal of Cd and Cu is a technically sound and economically feasible approach. The findings of this study demonstrated that this comprehensive process integrated leaching, solvent extraction and consequential decontamination can be a practical strategy for MSWI fly ash treatment.

    • While municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is classified as hazardous waste, it can also serve as an urban mining source for numerous precious metals. Of particular interest are antimony (Sb) and zinc (Zn); the former of which is a strategic and critical metal that is being rapidly depleted, putting society at high risk for supply shortages. In this work, a two-step leaching method for recovering Sb and Zn from MSWI fly ash is proposed. Furthermore, the leaching behavior and adsorption mechanism of Sb in the MSWI fly ash waste stream were also investigated. Results from the first constant pH leaching tests (CPLT) showed that under diluted acidic condition, the maximum amount of Sb released from fly ash was ∼20%. In addition, at pH 4.0, 67% of the fly ash was dissolved, while 79.3% and 12.1% of the Zn and Sb, respectively, were recovered. After optimizing and executing a second Sb leaching procedure (6 M HCl solution at 60 °C), >80% of the Sb was recovered. Thus, the proposed two-step leaching process, consisting of extraction followed by decontamination using a magnetic HAP@CoFe2O4 adsorbent, can eliminate the Sb in fly ash effluent with a removal efficiency >95%. Moreover, this process produces less toxic products and lowers the effluent residue concentration. As such, the two-step process described herein is suggested for Sb and Zn recovery from fly ash; as it not only enables precious metal recovery, but also aids in treating secondary waste streams produced from urban mining.

  • Progress of the key materials for organic solar cells

    • Organic solar cells have attracted academic and industrial interests due to the advantages like lightweight, flexibility and roll-to-roll fabrication. Nowadays, 18% power conversion efficiency has been achieved in the state-of-the-art organic solar cells. The recent rapid progress in organic solar cells relies on the continuously emerging new materials and device fabrication technologies, and the deep understanding on film morphology, molecular packing and device physics. Donor and acceptor materials are the key materials for organic solar cells since they determine the device performance. The past 25 years have witnessed an odyssey in developing high-performance donors and acceptors. In this review, we focus on those star materials and milestone work, and introduce the molecular structure evolution of key materials. These key materials include homopolymer donors, D-A copolymer donors, A-D-A small molecular donors, fullerene acceptors and nonfullerene acceptors. At last, we outlook the challenges and very important directions in key materials development.

  • Lifestyle and incident dementia: A COSMIC individual participant data meta-analysis

    • INTRODUCTIONThe LIfestyle for BRAin Health (LIBRA) index yields a dementia risk score based on modifiable lifestyle factors and is validated in Western samples. We investigated whether the association between LIBRA scores and incident dementia is moderated by geographical location or sociodemographic characteristics. METHODSWe combined data from 21 prospective cohorts across six continents (N = 31,680) and conducted cohort-specific Cox proportional hazard regression analyses in a two-step individual participant data meta-analysis. RESULTSA one-standard-deviation increase in LIBRA score was associated with a 21% higher risk for dementia. The association was stronger for Asian cohorts compared to European cohorts, and for individuals aged <= 75 years (vs older), though only within the first 5 years of follow-up. No interactions with sex, education, or socioeconomic position were observed. DISCUSSIONModifiable risk and protective factors appear relevant for dementia risk reduction across diverse geographical and sociodemographic groups. Highlights A two-step individual participant data meta-analysis was conducted. This was done at a global scale using data from 21 ethno-regionally diverse cohorts. The association between a modifiable dementia risk score and dementia was examined. The association was modified by geographical region and age at baseline. Yet, modifiable dementia risk and protective factors appear relevant in all investigated groups and regions.

  • Statistical analysis of whistler precursors upstream of foreshock transient shocks : MMS observations

    • Using the high-time-resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, precursor waves upstream of foreshock transient (FT) shocks are statistically investigated using the four-spacecraft timing method. The wave frequencies and wave vectors determined in the plasma rest frame (PRF) are shown to follow the cold plasma dispersion relation for whistler waves. Combining with the feature of the right-hand polarization in the PRF, the precursors are identified as whistler-mode waves around the lower hybrid frequency. The occurrence of whistler precursors is independent of the Alfvén Mach number and the FT shock normal angle. More importantly, all the whistler precursors have group velocities pointing upstream in the shock frame, suggesting the dispersive radiation to be a possible generation mechanism. The study improves the understanding of not only the whistler precursors but also the overall FT shock dynamics.

    • K. galanga is an aromatic medicinal herb. It is locally to India and distributed in China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. K. galanga is a Traditional Chinese Herb Medicine (TCHM), which has been applied to treat cold, dry cough, toothaches, rheumatism, hypertension and so on. In addition, it has been used widely as spices since its highly aromas. The aim of this review is to compile and update the current progresses of ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of K. galanga. All the data on K. galanga were based on different classical literary works, multiple electronic databases including SciFinder, Web of Science, PubMed, etc. The results showed that ninety-seven compounds have been identified from rhizome of K. galanga, including terpenoids, phenolics, cyclic dipeptides, flavonoids, diarylheptanoids, fatty acids and esters. Modern pharmacology studies revealed that extracts or secondary metabolites of the herb possessed anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-tumorous, anti-bacterial, and anti-angiogenesis effects, which were closely related to its abundant ethnomedicinal uses. In conclusion, although previous research works have provided various information of K. galanga, more in-depth studies are still necessary to systemically evaluate phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, toxicity and quality control of this herb.

    • Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) system constitutes an effective structure conceived for efficiently utilizing the channel information, which is capable of achieving a promising transmission performance in high-mobility environment. To extract enough channel diversity, a two-dimensional Fourier transformation combined with a pulse shape is designed at the OTFS transmitter. Consequently, the amplitude of OTFS signals may fluctuate drastically, owing to the combined dependency of the OTFS transformation and the pulse shape. To quantify the amplitude fluctuation, we investigate the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OTFS signals, for a large amount of data in the delay-Doppler domain. We first reveal that when the number of data points approaches to infinity, based on central limit theorems for dependent variables, the complexvalued OTFS signals weakly converge to a Gaussian distribution. Then, according to the extremal theory of the Chi-squared process for stationary OTFS signals, an accurate expression of the PAPR distribution is derived, depending on the transmit pulse and the number of data points. It is also demonstrated that upon modifying the exponential factor, the analytical PAPR expression is applicable for the non-stationary Gaussian distribution caused by the bandlimited pulse with a large roll-off factor. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the analytical PAPR probability for practical conditions.

    • The introduction of space-time block code (STBC) can efficiently increase the diversity of original spatial modulation (SM). However, the spectral efficiency of STBC will be reduced gradually with the increase of the transmit antennas. In this contribution, we conceive a novel quasi-orthogonal space-time block coded spatial modulation (QOSTBC-SM) design for multiple-input and multiple-out (MIMO) transmission by reaping their respective benefits, while improving the spectral efficiency compared to conventional space-time block coded spatial modulation (STBC-SM). More specifically, in the proposed QOSTBC-SM structure, the information bits are conveyed via the active antenna index, as well as the QOSTBC blocks at the transmitter, while at the receiver, a low-complexity detection scheme is proposed. Furthermore, a closed-form union bound of the bit error rate (BER) is also quantified by theoretical derivation. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that QOSTBC-SM is capable of outperforming the conventional counterpart as STBC-SM with higher spectral efficiency.

    • A novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided hybrid reflection/transmitter design is proposed for achieving information exchange in cross-media communications. In pursuit of the balance between energy efficiency and low-cost implementations, the cloud-management transmission protocol is adopted in the integrated multi-media system. Specifically, the messages of devices using heterogeneous propagation media, are firstly transmitted to the medium-matched AP, with the aid of the RIS-based dual-hop transmission. After the operation of intermediate frequency conversion, the access point (AP) uploads the received signals to the cloud for further demodulating and decoding process. Based on time division multiple access (TDMA), the cloud is able to distinguish the downlink data transmitted to different devices and transforms them into the input of the RIS controller via the dedicated control channel. Thereby, the RIS can passively reflect the incident carrier back into the original receiver with the exchanged information during the preallocated slots, following the idea of an index modulation-based transmitter. Moreover, the iterative optimization algorithm is utilized for optimizing the RIS phase, transmit rate and time allocation jointly in the delay-constrained cross-media communication model. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RIS-based scheme can improve the end-to-end throughput than that of the AP-based transmission, the equal time allocation, the random and the discrete phase adjustment benchmarks.

    • This paper investigates the issue of resource allocation for unmanned aerial vehicle and reconfigurable intelligent surface (UAV-RIS) assisted vehicular communication systems. To adapt the high dynamics of vehicular networks, we conceive a digital twin-based system over RIS-embedded environment towards environmental-aware communications. Specifically, a digital twin system can leverage data-driven models to predict the large-scale fading of future stages, while RIS is capable of controlling the propagation environments in real time, which can be utilized to mitigate prediction errors imposed by the small-scale fading. Using the capabilities of “prediction" and “reconfiguration", we expect to comprehensively foresee the dynamic changes in vehicular networks. In particular, the above-mentioned issue is formulated as a multi-slot total power consumption minimization problem under the quality of service (QoS) and energy constraints. Considering the finite battery energy of the UAV and the circuit power of the RIS, the transmit power of the UAV and the number of active reflecting elements (REs) are jointly scheduled for a finite time horizon. To tackle this mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem, we transform the original model into a discrete-time dynamic system. According to whether the dynamics of radio environments are predictable or not, the optimal offline and online policies are derived by using the deterministic and stochastic dynamic programming algorithms, respectively. To reduce the computation complexity, we further propose a novel online policy based on the idea of double-strategy selection. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that the proposed online policy exhibits near-optimal performances and outperforms other benchmarks in terms of transmission failure probability and effective power consumption.

    • A novel social-tie motivated relay selection scheme is proposed for dynamic device-to-device (D2D) communications overlaying cellular networks. Using the non-edge cellular users to forward data, the proposed relay selection scheme can improve the transmission performance of the cell-edge users as an explicit benefit of D2D relays. Meanwhile, the effects of both the physical layer and social layer on the relay selection are jointly considered, where social ties are regarded as not only the motivation of relay services, but also the metric of security performance. Moreover, a generalized satisfaction index is introduced for designing a uniform quality of experience (QoE) criterion that can map different quality of service (QoS) metrics such as rate, throughput, delay, into a unified metric, and hence, is beneficial for the tradeoff between QoE and resource efficiency of relay selection. Furthermore, a dynamic optimization process is constructed for analyzing the effects of both the mobility of users and the randomness of channel on the relay selection, with the aid of the Lyapunov framework and drift-plus-penalty (DPP) algorithm. Finally, numerical results validate the effects of the proposed relay selection scheme.

    • A joint optimization scheme of both time allocation and mode selection is proposed for defending smart jammer in the Internet of Things (IoT). Specifically, we employ multiple modes to deal with the potential eavesdropping and jamming attacks in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), respectively, as wireless-powered relaying (WPR), ambient backscatter relaying (ABR), friendly jamming (FJ) modes. Assuming a specific frame structure, time allocation between energy harvesting and transmission duration is first optimized for three modes based on transmission and security data maximization. In addition, considering that a single mode may fail to guarantee the performance demand due to the uncertainty of network conditions and adversary attacks, mode selection is carried out for adapting characteristics of different modes. Moreover, according to the available knowledge of jamming detection, for enhancing the robustness in secure transmission, the process of mode selection is further divided into two phases. Specifically, game theory is also utilized to achieve the Nash equilibrium for mode selection. Finally, numerical results verify the effects and exhibit the advantages of the proposed scheme.
