  • Collective Excitations in the Vicinity of N=Z
  • 1999. - 1 SUPPL. 1
  • Ingår i: Proceedings INPC 1998. - 0375-9474. ; 654, s. 659-662
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N≈Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus. In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 72Kr has been studied and completely reported in [2]. In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the 100Sn region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

  • Rotation induced octupole correlations in the neutron-deficient Te-109 nucleus
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 437:3-4, s. 236-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High spin states in the neutron deficient nucleus 109Te have been populated with the 58Ni+54Fe reaction at 220 MeV and investigated through γ-spectroscopy methods at the GASP spectrometer making use of reaction channel selection with the ISIS Si-ball. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of ≈12.1 MeV. The spins and parities of the observed levels are assigned tentatively supporting the identification of two bands of opposite parity connected by strong dipole transitions inferred to be of E1 character. Octupole correlations in 109Te induced by rotation are suggested as the cause of this effect.

  • Factors influencing the response to interferon therapy in chronic hepatitis C. Studies on viral genotype and induction of 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase in the liver and peripheral blood cells
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7708 .- 0036-5521. ; 31:6, s. 604-611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The mechanism behind the antiviral action of interferon (IFN) therapy in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is not well understood, and, furthermore, few factors have been shown to be good predictors of a favourable response to IFN treatment in chronic HCV infection. METHODS: Freshly explanted liver cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 80 patients with chronic HCV infection were used to study the capacity of IFN to induce the enzyme 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase (2'5'-AS) in vitro. The HCV genotype was determined in 53 patients. The induction of 2'5'-AS was correlated to the results of IFN-alpha treatment in 36 patients. RESULTS: Normalization of transaminases during IFN treatment was significantly associated with 2'5'-AS levels in liver cells cultured in the absence of IFN. A similar tendency, although not statistically significant, was found for IFN-induced levels of 2'5'-AS in liver cells. No such associations were found when PBMC were analysed. Six patients showed a sustained biochemical response. These six did not deviate significantly from the remaining patients with regard to base-line or IFN-induced levels of 2'5'-AS in liver cells or PBMC. Eradication of HCV RNA during IFN treatment did not correlate with 2'5'-AS levels in liver cells. Comparison of HCV genotype and clinical response showed that patients with genotype 3a had the most favourable outcome. No association was found between liver histology and treatment outcome. CONCLUSION: These data imply that direct effects of IFN on liver cells are of importance for the response to IFN treatment.

  • Maternal pregnancy hormone levels in an area with a high incidence (Boston, USA) and in an area with a low incidence (Shanghai, China) of breast cancer
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0007-0920 .- 1532-1827. ; 79:1, s. 7-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Characteristics probably associated with the fetal hormonal milieu have recently been shown to increase (birth size indicators, prematurity, neonatal jaundice) or decrease (pregnancy toxaemia) breast cancer risk in the female offspring. However, it is unknown whether differences in pregnancy hormone levels may contribute to the marked geographical variation in breast cancer incidence. We have compared, in a highly standardized manner, pregnancy hormone levels in a population with high incidence and one with low incidence of breast cancer. Three hundred and four pregnant Caucasian women in Boston and 334 pregnant Chinese women in Shanghai were enrolled from March 1994 to October 1995. Levels of oestradiol, oestriol, prolactin, progesterone, human growth hormone, albumin and sex hormone-binding globulin were measured in maternal blood at weeks 16 and 27 of gestation and compared between the two study sites using non-parametric Wilcoxon's rank-sum test. Demographical, anthropometrical and pregnancy characteristics were ascertained through interview, and relevant variables concerning delivery and the newborn were abstracted from medical records and paediatric charts. During the first visit, median serum levels of all studied hormones were statistically significant, and in most instances substantially, higher among Chinese women, who have a low incidence of breast cancer, compared with American women, who have a high incidence of breast cancer. An analogous pattern was evident during the second visit, although the relative differences tended to be smaller. Further research is needed to identify lifestyle or other exogenous determinants of pregnancy hormone levels, as well as possible mechanisms by which they may influence carcinogenic processes in the breast and possibly other organs.

  • Levels of mdr1 and mrp mRNA in leukaemic cell populations from patients with acute myelocytic leukaemia are heterogenous and inversely correlated to cellular daunorubicin accumulation
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Haematology. - : Wiley. - 0007-1048 .- 1365-2141. ; 92:4, s. 847-854
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multidrug resistance gene (mdr1) expression is associated with a poor prognosis in acute myelocytic leukaemia (AML). Whether expression of the recently described multidrug resistance-associated gene (mrp) has any prognostic importance in AML is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the functional role of the mdr1 and mrp mRNA levels in peripheral leukaemic cell populations from patients with AML. Peripheral leukaemic cells from 10 patients with AML were incubated with daunorubicin (DNR). Cellular DNR content was analysed with a fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS). From each cell population the 20–25% cells with the lowest and highest DNR content were sorted out, and mdr1 and mrp RNA were quantified in these subpopulations with competitive polymerase chain reaction. The ratio between the mean DNR content in the cell populations with high and low DNR content varied between 1.9 and 6.6. The cell fraction with low DNR content had higher (3.8–40 times) mdr1 mRNA levels in 10/10 patients and higher (1.4–26 times) mrp mRNA levels in 8/10, as compared to the cell fraction with high DNR accumulation. In conclusion, mdr1 and mrp mRNA expressions are heterogenous in leukaemic cell populations from patients with AML. The mdr1 expression, and to some extent mrp expression, is inversely correlated to DNR accumulation in vitro.
