    • Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

    • This paper describes the InP platforms for photonic integration and the development on these platforms of an optical code division multiple access (O-CDMA) system for local area networks. We demonstrate three building blocks of this system: an optical pulse source, an encoder/decoder pair, and a threshold detector. The optical pulse source consists of an integrated colliding pulse-mode laser with nearly transform-limited 10 Gb/s pulses and optical injection locking to an external clock for synchronization. The encoder/decoder pair is based on arrayed waveguide gratings. Bit-error-rate measurements involving six users at 10 Gb/s showed error-free transmission, while O-CDMA codes were calibrated using frequency resolved optical gating. For threshold detection after the decoder, we compared two Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-based optical thresholding schemes and present results on a new type of electroabsorber-based MZI.

  • Memory Effect of Metal-Oxide-Silicon Capacitors with Self-Assembly Double-Layer Au Nanocrystals Embedded in Atomic-Layer-Deposited HfO2 Dielectric

    • We report the chemical self-assembly growth of Au nanocrystals on atomic-layer-deposited HfO2 films aminosilanized by (3-Aminopropyl)-trimethoxysilane aforehand for memory applications. The resulting Au nanocrystals show a density of about 4 x 10(11) cm(-2) and a diameter range of 5-8 nm. The metal-oxide-silicon capacitor with double-layer Au nanocrystals embedded in HfO2 dielectric exhibits a large C - V hysteresis window of 11.9 V for +/- 11 V gate voltage sweeps at 1 MHz, a flat-band voltage shift of 1.5 V after the electrical stress under 7 V for 1 ms, a leakage current density of 2.9 x 10(-8) A/cm(-2) at 9 V and room temperature. Compared to single-layer Au nanocrystals, the double-layer Au nanocrystals increase the hysteresis window significantly, and the underlying mechanism is thus discussed.

  • A new approach integrating CO2 capture into a coal-based polygeneration system of power and liquid fuel

    • Reducing the energy penalty for CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) is a challenge. Most of previous studies for CCS have been focused on power generation system. When CCS is included in the polygeneration system, a new methodology that jointly considering CCS and liquid fuel production should be introduced. In this paper, we proposed a new approach integrating CCS into a coal-based polygeneration system for power generation and methanol production: the syngas produced from the coal gasifier, without adjusting the composition (CO/H2 ratio) by shift reaction, is used to synthesis methanol directly. Moreover, the partial-recycle scheme, in which a part of unreacted gas is recycled back to the synthesis reactor, is adopted in the synthesis unit. Another part of unreacted gas is treated to remove CO2, and then is used as clean fuel for the power generation subsystem. Compared to the conventional CCS approaches adopted by the power generation systems, the new approach is mainly characterized by two features: firstly, the combination of the removal of the composition adjustment process and a partial-recycle scheme can not only reduces the energy consumption for methanol production, but also obtains a high concentration of COx (CO and CO2) in the unreacted gas; secondly, the CO2 is captured from the unreacted gas, instead of from syngas generated by the gasifier. Due to increment of CO x concentration, the new approach can reduce the energy consumption for CO2 capture compared to conventional pre-combustion CO 2 capture. In the conventional coal based IGCC systems, the thermal efficiency is around 34-36% for a case with CO2 capture and around 44% for a case without CO2 capture. However, with the innovative approach integrating CCS, the polygeneration system in this paper can achieve the equivalent thermal efficiency as high as 47% when 72% of CO2 is recovered, which provides a significant improvement for CO2 capture. It's clearly that the new approach can increase the thermal efficiency, instead of incurring an energy penalty for CO2 capture. The results achieved in this study have provided a new methodology integrating CO2 capture into the polygeneration system, which reveals the different characteristics compared to power-generation system that has been overlooked by the previous studies.

  • Density-functional studies of plasmons in small metal clusters

    • We study the formation of plasmon modes of small gold clusters by modeling the excitation spectra. The shape change of the longitudinal mode as a function of cluster size is studied using time-dependent Kohn-Sham theory and Gaussian basis sets. The presence of d electrons in gold atoms affect the plasmon formation process, resulting in a high excitation energy for transverse mode and a complicated spectra profile in general. The transverse mode can still be identified with the help of a frozen-orbital approximation.

    • An atomic-layer-deposited Al2O3/HfO2/Al2O3 (A/H/A) tunnel barrier is investigated for Co nanocrystal memory capacitors. Compared to a single Al2O3 tunnel barrier, the A/H/A barrier can significantly increase the hysteresis window, i. e., an increase by 9V for +/- 12V sweep range. This is attributed to a marked decrease in the energy barriers of charge injections for the A/H/A tunnel barrier. Further, the Co-nanocrystal memory capacitor with the A/H/A tunnel barrier exhibits a memory window as large as 4.1V for 100 mu s program/erase at a low voltage of +/- 7V, which is due to fast charge injection rates, i. e., about 2.4 x 10(16) cm(-2) s(-1) for electrons and 1.9 x 10(16) cm(-2) s(-1) for holes.

  • Integrated Black Liquor Gasification Polygeneration System with CO2 Capture in Pulp and Paper Mills to Produce Methanol and Electricity

    • Based on the KAMa reference pulp and paper mill, polygeneration systems with a black liquorgasifier are studied. The systems introduce black liquor gasifier to replace a recovery boiler inpulp mills to produce both methanol and electricity while capturing CO2 by means of oxygen-fuelcombustion and Selexol pre-combustion. The systems are simulated and compared with or withoutCO2 capture integrated with black liquor gasification. The productions of methanol and electricityfrom the black liquor are compared with that of the reference system, which is defined as arecovery boiler based power generation system. Thermodynamic and economic performanceincluding efficiency and costs are compared between the polygeneration systems and the referencesystem. Compared with the reference system the polygeneration system produces additional73.5MW methanol while reducing electricity of 11.2MW with the investment incremental of 8.6%.The penalty due to CO2 capture and compression is 0.46 MJ electricity/kg CO2 avoided foroxygen-fuel combustion method (86% carbon capture). This penalty is much lower than that ofthe CO2 penalty in coal power plant which is in the range of about 0.91 (IGCC, 91.7% CO2capture) to 1.56 (steam power, 91.7% CO2 capture) MJ electricity/kg CO2. However, due to thelarge steam demand and methanol production, the CO2 penalty can reach 1.33 MJ Methanol /kgCO2 avoided in the Selexol capture system (73% carbon capture). The incremental cost due toCO2 capture and storage is 22.9 $/tonne CO2 for oxyfuel combustion and 48.6 $/tonne CO2 forSelexol capture. For the large demand of steam in the mill, much syngas is used to meet the steamdememd, which limits the production of methanol, especially in the case of Selexol capture ofCO2.

    • Purpose: p33ING1b, as a candidate tumour suppressor gene, has been found to be expressed a proportion of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs), however, its clinicopathological significance is not studied yet. Our aim was to investigate association of p33ING1b expression with clinicopathological variables and particularly interesting new cysteine-histidine rich protein (PINCH) in OSCCs. Methods: p33ING1b expression was immumohistochemically examined in 20 normal oral mucosa specimens and 49 OSCCs. Results: Normal squamous cells showed only p33ING1b nuclear expression (no cytoplasmic expression), with a rate of 90% positive cases. While 24% of OSCCs appeared cytoplasmic expression (11 of them with weak nuclear staining) and the rest tumours (76%) were negative for p33 ING1b. Furthermore, the cases having lymph node metastasis showed a higher frequency of positive cytoplasmic expression than those without metastasis (P = 0.03). The p33ING1b cytoplasmic expression was positively related to PINCH expression (P = 0.04), the cases positive for both proteins had a high rate of the metastasis (P = 0.03). Conclusions: The transfer of p33ING1b protein from the nucleus to the cytoplasm may result in loss of normal cellular function of the protein, which might play a role in the tumourigenesis and metastasis of OSCCs. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.

    • The aim is to study the effect of dimethylsulfoxide-soluble smoking particles (DSP) and nicotine on the contractility of rat mesenteric artery. The superior mesenteric artery segments were cultured with DSP or nicotine for 24 h. The vascular contractibility was recorded with myograph system. DSP 0.4 mL/L and nicotine 0.48 and 0.96 mg/L shifted the concentration-contractile curves induced by sarafotoxin 6c, a selective agonist for ETB receptor toward the left with increased E-max. DSP 0.4 mL/L and nicotine 0.96 mg/L shifted ETA receptor-mediated the concentration-contractile curves toward the left with increased E-max. However, nicotine 0.06 mg/L which is the equivalent concentration of nicotine in DSP 0.4 mL/L did not affect the curves and the E-max mediated with ETA receptor and ETB receptor. DSP 0.2 and 0.4 mL/L shifted the concentration-contractile curves induced by noradrenaline toward the right with decreased E-max. Neither did nicotine 0.06 and 0.96 mg/L. Both DSP and nicotine shifted the concentration-contractile curves induced by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) toward the right parallely. DSP changed the phenotypes towards an increased efficacy of ETA receptor and ETB receptor, and a reduced efficacy of 5-HT receptor and alpha-adrenocceptor. The effects of DSP on ETB receptor, ETA receptor and alpha-adrenocceptor were independent of nicotine. The effect on 5-HT receptor was responsible to nicotine.
