  • Inhibition of Thrombin Abrogates the Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction Triggered by Isolated Human Islets : Possible application of the thrombin inhibitor melagatran in clinical islet transplantation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 51:6, s. 1779-1784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A thrombotic/inflammatory reaction is elicited when isolated islets of Langerhans come in contact with ABO-compatible blood. The detrimental effects of this instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) provide a reasonable explanation for the observation that an unexpectedly high number of islets, from several donors, are needed to produce normoglycemia in transplant patients with type 1 diabetes. In this study, the hypothesis that a specific thrombin inhibitor, Melagatran, could reduce IBMIR in an in vitro model in which human islets are exposed to ABO-compatible blood was tested. The administration of Melagatran abrogated IBMIR dose-dependently. Islets exposed to blood, in the absence or presence of 0.4 μmol/l Melagatran, exhibited a loss of integrity and were found to be trapped in macroscopic clots containing platelets and CD11b+ leukocytes. At concentrations from 1 to 10 μmol/l, Melagatran inhibited both coagulation and complement activation. Also, platelet and leukocyte activation and consumption were decreased. Islet morphology was maintained with almost no platelets adhering to the surface, and infiltration by CD11b+ leukocytes was considerably reduced. In conclusion, Melagatran significantly reduced IBMIR in this model system. This protective effect indicates that thrombin plays a pivotal role in IBMIR and suggests that thrombin inhibition can improve the outcome of clinical islet transplantation.

  • Look, a ToSsphere! : Behind the checkbox of Terms of Service
  • 2023
  • Konstnärligt arbeteabstract
    • In this project, I attempt to go behind the checkbox and unpack what is it that we agree on when we check ‘I have read and agree on ToS’ boxes. By engaging with ToS at different scales – zooming in and out – through reading, translating, and transposing, I explore what each mode of engagement reveals, what questions they lead to, and how these explorations could inform designers.

  • Diyanet as a Turkish Foreign Policy Tool: Evidence from the Netherlands and Bulgaria
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Politics and Religion. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 1755-0483 .- 1755-0491. ; 11:3, s. 624-648
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How does Turkeys Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) act as an instrument of foreign policy (FP)? What are the factors that allow such an instrumentalization of Islam in Turkish FP? In addressing these questions, this paper uses semi-structured expert interviews from Bulgaria and the Netherlands. Although both countries host a sizeable Muslim minority, these populations differ in their characteristics and historical ties with Turkey. Comparing Diyanets role in the Netherlands with its recent Turkish-Muslim diaspora, and in Bulgaria with its centuries-old Muslim minority allows us to reveal variation in the practical engagement strategies that Diyanet adopts in different country contexts. Thus, this paper advances two main claims; first, Diyanet serves as a primary FP tool of Turkey in countries with a significant Turkish-Muslim minority. Secondly, this instrumentalization destabilizes secularization projects both at home and abroad.

  • Distributed multichannel random access networks with selfish users
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks Communications (CROWNCOM), 2010. - 9781424458851 ; , s. 5577687-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) schemes allow the users to share spectrum resources by taking advantage of the variations in spectrum demand over time and space. Carrying out dynamic spectrum allocation centrally, however, can be a complex task. For this reason, distributed schemes in which users can access the available channels independently may be preferable to centralized DSA schemes. Cognitive radio systems, which enable user terminals to sense their environment and form their action accordingly, are particularly well-suited for distributed systems. On the other hand, the freedom in distributed schemes gives the users the option to act selfishly, which has decisive effects on system performance. In this paper we consider a distributed multichannel wireless random access system where users selfishly access the channels in the system. We analyze the behavior of the selfish users by modeling the system as a non-cooperative game and we identify all stable operating points (Nash equilibria) of this game. We then compare the performance of this system with a number of cooperative distributed DSA schemes in terms of user utilities. Our results show that the performance of the selfish multichannel random access system can be comparable to cooperative schemes.

  • Exploring gender dysphoria and related outcomes in a prospective cohort study: protocol for the Swedish Gender Dysphoria Study (SKDS)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Bmj Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 13:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction There has been a drastic increase in the reported number of people seeking help for gender dysphoria in many countries over the last two decades. Yet, our knowledge of gender dysphoria and related outcomes is restricted due to the lack of high-quality studies employing comprehensive approaches. This longitudinal study aims to enhance our knowledge of gender dysphoria; different aspects will be scrutinised, focusing primarily on the psychosocial and mental health outcomes, prognostic markers and, secondarily, on the underlying mechanisms for its origin. Methods and analysis The Swedish Gender Dysphoria Study is an ongoing multicentre longitudinal cohort study with 501 registered participants with gender dysphoria who are 15 years old or older. Participants at different phases of their clinical evaluation process can enter the study, and the expected follow-up duration is three years. The study also includes a comparison group of 458 age- and county-matched individuals without gender dysphoria. Data on the core outcomes of the study, which are gender incongruence and experienced gender dysphoria, body satisfaction and satisfaction with gender-affirming treatments, as well as other relevant outcomes, including mental health, social functioning and life satisfaction, are collected via web surveys. Two different research visits, before and after starting on gender-affirming hormonal treatment (if applicable), are planned to collect respective biological and cognitive measures. Data analysis will be performed using appropriate biostatistical methods. A power analysis showed that the current sample size is big enough to analyse continuous and categorical outcomes, and participant recruitment will continue until December 2022. Ethics and dissemination The ethical permission for this study was obtained from the Local Ethical Review Board in Uppsala, Sweden. Results of the study will be presented at national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Dissemination will also be implemented through the Swedish Gender Dysphoria Study network in Sweden.

  • Collaborative Navigation-Aware Coverage in Feature-Poor Environments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2022.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi agent coverage and robot navigation are two very important research fields within robotics. However, their intersection has received limited attention. In multi agent coverage, perfect navigation is often assumed, and in robot navigation,  the focus is often to minimize the localization error with the aid of stationary features from the environment. The need for integration of the two becomes clear in environments with very sparse features or landmarks, for example when a group of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are to search a uniform seafloor for mines or other dangerous objects. In such environments, localization systems are often deprived of detectable features to use that could increase their accuracy. In this paper we propose an algorithm for doing navigation aware multi agent coverage in areas with no landmarks.Instead of using identical lawn mower patterns, we propose to mirror every other pattern to enable the agents to meet up and makeinter-agent measurements and share information regularly. This improves performance in two ways, global drift in relation to the area to be covered is reduced, and local coverage gaps between adjacent patterns are reduced.Further, we show that this can be accomplished within the constraints of very limited sensing, computing and communication resources that most AUVs have available. The effectiveness of our method is shown through statistically significant simulated experiments.

  • On the Impact of Hardware Impairments on RIS-aided Localization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - 1550-3607. ; 2022-May, s. 2846-2851
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided near-field localization system with single-antenna user equipment (UE) and base station (BS) under hardware impairments by considering a practical phase-dependent RIS amplitude variations model. To analyze the localization performance under the mismatch between the practical model and the ideal model with unit-amplitude RIS elements, we employ the misspecified Cramér-Rao bound (MCRB). Based on the MCRB derivation, the lower bound (LB) on the mean-squared error for estimation of UE position is evaluated and shown to converge to the MCRB at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Simulation results indicate more severe performance degradation due to the model misspecification with increasing SNR. In addition, the mismatched maximum likelihood (MML) estimator is derived and found to be tight to the LB in the high SNR regime. Finally, we observe that the model mismatch can lead to an order-of-magnitude localization performance loss at high SNRs.

    • Since many years in Swedish national research project and Swedish-Chinese research framework we have carried out advanced ceramic fuel cell research and development, targeting for intermediate and low temperature ceramic or solid oxide fuel cells (ILTCFCs or ILTSOFCs, 300-700°C) based on ceramic-based composite materials. The ceramic composite material developments in Sweden have been experienced from the oxyacid-salts oxide proton-based conductors, non-oxide containment salts, the ceria-based composite electrolytes and nano-composites. Among them the ceria-based composites showed excellent ionic conductivity of 0.01 to 1 Scm-1 and ILTCFCs using these composites as electrolytes have achieved high performances of 200 to 1000 mWcm-2 at temperatures between 400 and 700°C. The excellent ion conduction was resulted from hybrid proton and oxygen ion conduction. The hybrid ion conduction and dual electrode reactions and processes create a new fuel cell system. Advanced ceramic fuel cell aims at developing a new generation to realize the challenges for fuel cell commercialization. This paper reviews our more than 14 years R&D on the field with emphasis on the recent progresses and achievements.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of VLSI Signal Processing. - 0922-5773. ; 23:2-3, s. 335-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A customized processor for real time image convolution has been designed to increase the performance of an instrument for automated cereal grain quality assessment. Image convolution requires an extensive amount of calculation capacity and a corresponding amount of data transfers, hard to achieve with standard processors in real time. Therefore, a tailored architecture with a streamlined dataflow has been developed with emphasis on a system design perspective. The designed processor has a sustained calculation capacity of >1 GMAC/s and on-chip line buffers reduce the amount of external data transfers. Hence, the complexity of the designed processor has been increased to gain a lower complexity of the complete system. To achieve powerful and versatile filtering the size of the programmable kernel functions have been maximized to 15 × 15.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 158:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diffusion propagator fully characterizes the diffusion process, which is highly sensitive to the confining boundaries and the structure within enclosed pores. While magnetic resonance has extensively been used to observe various features of the diffusion process, its full characterization has been elusive. Here, we address this challenge by employing a special sequence of magnetic field gradient pulses for measuring the diffusion propagator, which allows for "listening to the drum," mapping structural dispersity, and determining not only the pores shape but also diffusive dynamics within it.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 67:5, s. 3234-3250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, where the channels are spatially correlated Rician fading. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight component describing a practical spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE), element-wise MMSE, and least-square channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio combining and precoding, rigorous closed-form uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived and analyzed. The asymptotic SE behavior, when using the different channel estimators, are also analyzed. The numerical results show that the SE is higher when using the MMSE estimator than that of the other estimators, and the performance gap increases with the number of antennas.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 589, s. 88-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deciphering how neuronal diversity is established and maintained requires a detailed knowledge of neuronal gene expression throughout development. In contrast to mammalian brains(1,2), the large neuronal diversity of the Drosophila optic lobe(3) and its connectome(4-6) are almost completely characterized. However, a molecular characterization of this neuronal diversity, particularly during development, has been lacking. Here we present insights into brain development through a nearly complete description of the transcriptomic diversity of the optic lobes of Drosophila. We acquired the transcriptome of 275,000 single cells at adult and at five pupal stages, and built a machine-learning framework to assign them to almost 200 cell types at all time points during development. We discovered two large neuronal populations that wrap neuropils during development but die just before adulthood, as well as neuronal subtypes that partition dorsal and ventral visual circuits by differential Wnt signalling throughout development. Moreover, we show that the transcriptomes of neurons that are of the same type but are produced days apart become synchronized shortly after their production. During synaptogenesis we also resolved neuronal subtypes that, although differing greatly in morphology and connectivity, converge to indistinguishable transcriptomic profiles in adults. Our datasets almost completely account for the known neuronal diversity of the Drosophila optic lobes, and serve as a paradigm to understand brain development across species. The neuronal diversity of the Drosophila optic lobe is described throughout pupal development by single-cell sequencing, leading to the discovery of transient extrinsic neurons and a dorsoventral asymmetry of the visual circuits.

  • Loss of Regulator of G-Protein Signaling 5 Leads to Neurovascular Protection in Stroke
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Stroke. - 1524-4628. ; 49:9, s. 2182-2190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Purpose- In ischemic stroke, breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) aggravates brain damage. Pericyte detachment contributes to BBB disruption and neurovascular dysfunction, but little is known about its regulation in stroke. Here, we investigated how loss of RGS5 (regulator of G protein signaling 5) in pericytes affects BBB breakdown in stroke and its consequences. Method- We used RGS5 knockout and control mice and applied a permanent middle cerebral occlusion model. We analyzed pericyte numbers, phenotype, and vessel morphology using immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. We investigated BBB breakdown by measuring endothelial coverage, tight junctions, and AQP4 (aquaporin 4) in addition to BBB permeability (fluorescent-conjugated dextran extravasation). Tissue hypoxia was assessed with pimonidazole hydrochloride and neuronal death quantified with the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay. Results- We demonstrate that loss of RGS5 increases pericyte numbers and their endothelial coverage, which is associated with higher capillary density and length, and significantly less BBB damage after stroke. Loss of RGS5 in pericytes results in reduced vascular leakage and preserved tight junctions and AQP4, decreased cerebral hypoxia, and partial neuronal protection in the infarct area. Conclusions- Our findings show that loss of RGS5 affects pericyte-related BBB preservation in stroke and identifies RGS5 as an important target for neurovascular protection.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A symmetrical Doherty power amplifier (PA) with an extended efficiency range is proposed. This paper proves the existence of a class of symmetrical Doherty PAs having efficiency peaks for back-off levels larger than 6 dB. A design technique is developed that maintains the full voltage and current swings of both the main and auxiliary transistors. The concept is experimentally verified in a 1.95-GHz 25-W circuit demonstrator fabricated using identical GaN HEMT devices. An average power-added efficiency of 50% and adjacent power leakage ratio of -49 dBc is obtained with 9-dB peak-to-average power-ratio 20-MHz long-term evolution test signals.

    • Information problems and lack of collateral value should make R&D more susceptible to financing frictions than other investments, yet existing evidence on whether financing constraints limit R&D is decidedly mixed, particularly in the studies of non-U.S. firms. We study a large sample of European firms and also find little evidence of binding finance constraints when we estimate standard investment-cash flow regressions. However, we find strong evidence that the availability of finance matters for R&D once we directly control for: (i) firm efforts to smooth R&D with cash reserves and (ii) firm use of external equity finance. Our study provides a framework for evaluating financing constraints when firms rely extensively on external finance and endogenously manage buffer stocks of liquidity to keep investment smooth, and our findings show that controlling for this smoothing behavior is critical for uncovering the full effect of financing constraints. Our findings also indicate a major role for external equity in financing R&D, highlighting a causal channel through which stock market development and liberalization can promote economic growth by increasing firm-level innovative activity.

    • The Generic Methodology for Verification, Validation and Acceptance (GM-VV) is intended to provide a common generic framework for making formal and well balanced acceptance decisions on a specific usage of models, simulations and data. GM-VV will offer the international M&S community with a Verification, Validation (VV) and Acceptance methodology that consistently embraces a wide variety of M&S technologies and application domains. The GM-VV builds upon a triad of three pillars; the products, the organization and process pillar. At the centre of the products pillar stands the GM-VV data information model. The GM-VV data information model is the structural model for the GM-VV project memory approach. This project memory not only stores the GM-VV core products but also serve as the data and information source for generating these products. In this paper the formal specification of the GM-VV data information model and its underlying principles, concepts and methods are presented. The paper shows how this model is used in the GM-VV project memory approach to produce the core GM-VV products being: the acceptance plan, the verification & validation plan, the evidence, the verification &validation report, and the acceptance report.

  • Recognizing and Responding to Anti-Science in Environmental and Public Health Research and Practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International journal of environmental research and public health. - : MDPI AG. - 1660-4601. ; 20:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This perspectives article considers the challenges posed by anti-science and how we can use research to respond more effectively. In public health, the challenges were more visible and the impact more serious during the COVID-19 pandemic. In part, this was due to a more organized anti-science and effective use of narrative methods. Regarding climate change, the role of anti-science represents a critical issue, but perhaps more recognized in environmental research and practice. The article draws on a narrative review to show some of the research into the nature of anti-science and the challenges it poses. It proposes that, as researchers, practitioners, and educationalists, we can be more effective if we make more use of recent research in the sciences of communications, behavior, and implementation, and shows some of the resources we can use to help our work be more relevant in the new era in which we are living.

  • Ingår i: European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry. - 0965-7452. ; 14:3, s. 105-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This presentation reports on the results of a meeting of prosthodontists from selected European countries. The aim of the meeting was to analyse and promote specialisation and specialist education in Prosthetic Dentistry in Europe. Representatives for Europe were selected from the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA) board, the Education and Research Committee of International College of Prosthodontists (ICP), countries with a legally recognised speciality, countries without a recognised speciality but organised training programmes and countries with neither of these situations. Data about specialisation and specialist training in Prosthodontics in Europe was scrutinised and discussed. The programmes for countries with specialist training had relatively similar content, mostly of three years duration. There was strong agreement that a recognised speciality raises the level of care within the discipline for both specialists and non-specialists. In several of the countries where a speciality had been introduced it had been initiated by pressure from public health planning authorities. The conclusions are that from a professional viewpoint an advancement of the speciality over Europe would develop the discipline, improve oral health planning and quality of patient care. A working group for harmonisation was recommended.

  • Influence of the Size and Curvedness of Neural Projections on the Orientationally Averaged Diffusion MR Signal
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Physics. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-424X. ; 6, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neuronal and glial projections can be envisioned to be tubes of infinitesimal diameter as far as diffusion magnetic resonance (MR) measurements via clinical scanners are concerned. Recent experimental studies indicate that the decay of the orientationally-averaged signal in white-matter may be characterized by the power-law, Ē(q) ∝ q−1, where q is the wavenumber determined by the parameters of the pulsed field gradient measurements. One particular study by McKinnon et al. [1] reports a distinctively faster decay in gray-matter. Here, we assess the role of the size and curvature of the neurites and glial arborizations in these experimental findings. To this end, we studied the signal decay for diffusion along general curves at all three temporal regimes of the traditional pulsed field gradient measurements. We show that for curvy projections, employment of longer pulse durations leads to a disappearance of the q−1 decay, while such decay is robust when narrow gradient pulses are used. Thus, in clinical acquisitions, the lack of such a decay for a fibrous specimen can be seen as indicative of fibers that are curved. We note that the above discussion is valid for an intermediate range of q-values as the true asymptotic behavior of the signal decay is Ē(q) ∝ q−4 for narrow pulses (through Debye-Porod law) or steeper for longer pulses. This study is expected to provide insights for interpreting the diffusion-weighted images of the central nervous system and aid in the design of acquisition strategies.

  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 63:3, s. 754-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an online method for joint state and parameter estimation in jump Markov non-linear systems (JMNLS). State inference is enabled via the use of particle filters which makes the method applicable to a wide range of non-linear models. To exploit the inherent structure of JMNLS, we design a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) where the discrete mode is marginalized out analytically. This results in an efficient implementation of the algorithm and reduces the estimation error variance. The proposed RBPF is then used to compute, recursively in time, smoothed estimates of complete data sufficient statistics. Together with the online expectation maximization algorithm, this enables recursive identification of unknown model parameters including the transition probability matrix. The method is also applicable to online identification of jump Markov linear systems(JMLS). The performance of the method is illustrated in simulations and on a localization problem in wireless networks using real data.

  • Ingår i: IATSS Research. - : Elsevier. - 0386-1112. ; 46:1, s. 130-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traffic climate is a recent and one of the essential topics in traffic and transportation research. Various studies have examined the relations of traffic climate with driving outcomes such as accidents by using different versions of the Traffic Climate Scale (TCS). In a recent attempt, 16-items and 38-items versions of the TCS were examined in different countries. With respect to that, the present study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of 16-items and 38-items versions in samples from Turkey and Sweden and to test the traffic climate differences of these two countries. A total of 309 participants from Turkey and 357 participants from Sweden completed a questionnaire including a demographic information form and the TCS. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the short TCS had better fit indexes with acceptable reliability. Moreover, the traffic system in Turkey was perceived to be more internally and externally demanding and less functional compared to the traffic system in Sweden. The results suggest that the short TCS is a reliable and user-friendly measurement to understand the perception of road users.

  • Effect of propagation environment on area throughput of dense WLAN deployments
  • 2013

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Indoor wireless LAN deployments have become ubiquitous. As WLAN deployments become increasingly dense, WLANs start to cause more and more contention and interference to each other, to the point that they cause significant throughput degradation to other WLANs. Since WLANs are one of the most commonplace solutions to provide indoor broadband data access, it is crucial to assess the throughput limits of WLANs in order to understand at what demand level novel broadband access mechanisms will be critically needed. The amount of contention and interference that coexisting WLANs create on each other is influenced by the indoor propagation environment such as existence of walls or clutter. Although the indoor propagation environment has a significant impact on the interaction between WLANs, and consequently on the area throughput, the relationship between the indoor propagation environment and achievable area throughput has not received much attention. In this paper, we investigate the area throughput of densely deployed WLANs in different indoor propagation environments by conducting detailed MAC layer simulations using OPNET. The results show that the propagation conditions have a profound impact on achievable area throughput; as much as several tens of times increase in highly cluttered environments compared to open areas.

  • When we were young: how labour market attachment during mid-life affects labour market exit
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy. - : Emerald Publishing Limited. - 0144-333X .- 1758-6720. ; 43:13/14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeIn this paper, the authors attempt to understand how labour market attachment during the ages of 30–59 influences individuals' transition out of the labour market.Design/methodology/approachUsing high-quality Swedish register data, the authors follow individuals born in 1950 and observe their labour market attachment during mid-life and their exit from the labour market.FindingsThe authors find evidence that labour market attachment in different stages of the career is differently related to exit from the labour market. At the age of 30, as well as between the ages 50–59, low attachment is related with earlier exit from the labour market. On the contrary, low labour market attachment during the ages 40–49 is related with later exit from the labour market. However, regardless of age, lower labour market attachment increases the risk of work-related benefit receipt in the exit year. The authors also find evidence that gender, migration status and childhood socioeconomic disadvantages may represent obstacles to longer working lives, while high education is a consistent factor in avoiding early exit from the labour market.Originality/valueThis study provides insights on the link between labour market attachment in different stages of the career and the exit from the labour market as well as work-related benefits dependency in the year of exit.

  • Optimum usage of waste marble powder to reduce use of cement toward eco-friendly concrete
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Research and Technology. - : Elsevier. - 2238-7854 .- 2214-0697. ; 25, s. 4799-4819
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, waste marble powder (WMP) was used to replace cement of concrete in specific amounts. To accomplish this aim, WMP was replaced at 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% of the cement weight, and a reference concrete sample without WMP (REF) was created to compare the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength. The replacement of WMP at 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% of the cement weight resulted in 5.7%, 21.7%, 38.1%, and 43.6% decreases in the compressive strength compared with REF. Furthermore, the splitting tensile strength results commonly followed the same trend as the compressive strength. However, WMP at 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% led to 5.3%, 8.6%, 19.4%, and 26.7% decreases in the flexural strength compared with REF. In addition, three different calculations, ranging from simple to complex, were proposed to compute mechanical resistances of concrete with WMP. These proposed calculations for practical applications were validated using values from the literature and the implications obtained from the current research. While the simple calculations were based on the strength of REF and the WMP percentages, the complex calculations were dependent on the design of the concrete mixture, age of the samples, and the WMP percentages. For the complex calculations, the ANN approach was used with the help of the coefficient of determination (R2) for the K-fold cross validation method. All the proposed methods provided high accurate estimation to predict the properties of concrete with WMP. Based on the studies, utilizing 10% WMP as the replacement of cement is recommended to obtain the optimum benefits considering both mechanical and environmental aspects. Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses were then conducted to observe the interaction of WMP in concrete. According to the SEM analyses, some pores were detected and the interfacial transition zone was observed in the reaction zone. On the other hand, based on the EDX analyses, the presence of WMP in concrete was manifested by the presence of high levels of calcium.

  • Den ofrånkomliga nationalismen
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 48:1, s. 51-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The necessary nationalismThis article deals with the role of fictional narratives, especially the modern novel, in the formation of national identities. Naguib Mafouz’s Cairo trilogy is referred to as an example of how literature may both serve as the mirror image of national identities and as an agency in their formation. The sense of community attachment to a modern state is ”thinner” than to a family or traditional village and/or tribe, though no less vital. Drawing on Norbert Elias’s concept of ”survival unit,” Benedict Anderson’s ”imagined communities” and recent studies in the field of comparative literature by Gregory Jusdanis and Azade Seyhan, this article argues for the necessity of the nation – in spite of its unfavourable chauvinistic reputation. This contention is discussed in relation to recent literary developments in Turkey and recent debates on nationhood in a Swedish context.
