  • Multiwavelength observations of short-timescale variability in NGC 4151. I. Ultraviolet observations
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 470:1, s. 322-335335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presents the results of an intensive ultraviolet monitoring campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, as part of an effort to study its short-timescale variability over a broad range in wavelength. The nucleus of NGC 4151 was observed continuously with the International Ultraviolet Explorer for 9.3 days, yielding a pair of LWP and SWP spectra every ~70 minutes, and during 4 hr periods for 4 days prior to and 5 days after the continuous-monitoring period. The sampling frequency of the observations is an order of magnitude higher than that of any previous UV monitoring campaign on a Seyfert galaxy. The continuum fluxes in bands from 1275 to 2688 Aring went through four significant and well-defined ldquoeventsrdquo of duration 2-3 days during the continuous-monitoring period. The authors find that the amplitudes of the continuum variations decrease with increasing wavelength, which extends a general trend for this and other Seyfert galaxies to smaller timescales (i.e., a few days). The continuum variations in all the UV bands are simultaneous to within an accuracy of ~0.15 days, providing a strict constraint on continuum models. The emission-line light curves show only one major event during the continuous monitoring (a slow rise followed by a shallow dip) and do not correlate well with continuum light curves over the short duration of the campaign, because the timescale for continuum variations is apparently smaller than the response times of the emission lines

  • New Band Structures and an Unpaired Crossing in 78Kr
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 59:2, s. 655-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Kr-78 were studied using the Ni-58(Na-23,3p) reaction at 70 MeV and the Ni-58(Si-23,alpha 4p) reaction at 130 MeV. Prompt gamma-gamma coincidences were measured using the Pitt-FSU detector array and the GAMMASPHERE-MICROBALL array. Results from these experiments have led to 26 new excitation levels, some of which have been grouped into 3 new bands. Spins were assigned based on directional correlations of oriented nuclei. Two of the new negative-parity bands appear to form a signature-partner pair based on a two-quasineutron structure, in contrast to the previously known two-quasiproton negative-parity bands. A forking has been observed at the 24(+) state in the yrast band, which calculations suggest may result from an unpaired crossing. The available evidence suggests oblate shapes in the yrast band coexist with prolate shapes in the negative-parity bands. [S0556-2813(99)04602-6].

  • Triaxial superdeformed bands in [Formula Presented]
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 57:1, s. 1-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four new superdeformed bands have been found in the nucleus [Formula Presented]. The good agreement between experiment and configuration-dependent shell correction calculations suggests that three of the bands have triaxial superdeformed shapes. Such unique features in mass [Formula Presented] superdeformed bands have been predicted, but not observed experimentally until now. A fourth band in [Formula Presented] is interesting due to a fairly constant and unusually high dynamic moment of inertia. Possible interpretations of this structure are discussed.

  • Spin yields of neutron-rich nuclei from deep inelastic reactions
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 60:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential for using deep inelastic reactions to populate high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei is studied in a series of experiments using GAMMASPHERE for gamma-ray detection and a silicon strip detector for measuring the angles of projectilelike and targetlike fragments. In three experiments 61 new transitions up to a maximum spin of 22 (h) over bar in 12 neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei were found. We observe that gamma-ray yields as a function of spin are flatter for all neutron transfer products than for inelastic excitation of either the projectile or target nucleus. Calculations are presented which indicate that this difference cannot be accounted for by quasielastic processes, but more likely are the result of larger energy loss processes, such as deep inelastic reactions. • Search for hyperdeformation in Gd-146,Gd-147
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 54:4, s. 1585-1588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search was undertaken to look for evidence of hyperdeformation in Gd-146,Gd-147. Three experiments employing Gammasphere for gamma-ray detection coupled with the Microball for channel selection via charged particle detection were carried out with increasing detection sensitivity and statistics. No definitive evidence for band structures that could be assigned to hyperdeformation could be found. Candidates previously reported are shown not to have properties consistent with a band structure.

  • Study of neutron-rich nuclei using deep-inelastic reactions
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 56:2, s. 753-759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used the Ca-48+Yb-176 reaction to study the population of high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei by deep-inelastic reactions. Using Gammasphere, we observed gamma transitions from nuclei several neutrons richer than the target. Yrast states with spin up to 20 were populated in this reaction. High-spin states in Yb-175,Yb-177,Yb-178 were observed. In this region of reduced pairing, a reference based on experimental data was used to derive experimental Routhians. Systematics of experimental Routhians in neutron-rich Yb nuclei compare well with cranked shell-model calculations.

  • Maximum extent of the Eurasian ice sheets in the Barents and Kara Sea region during the Weichselian
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Boreas. - : Wiley. - 1502-3885 .- 0300-9483. ; 28:1, s. 92-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on field investigations in northern Russia and interpretation of offshore seismic data, we have made a preliminary reconstruction of the maximum ice-sheet extent in the Barents and Kara Sea region during the Early/Middle Weichselian and the Late Weichselian. Our investigations indicate that the Barents and Kara ice sheets attained their maximum Weichselian positions in northern Russia prior to 50 000 yr BP, whereas the northeastern flank of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet advanced to a maximum position shortly after 17000 calendar years ago. During the Late Weichselian (25 000–10000 yr BP), much of the Russian Arctic remained ice-free. According to our reconstruction, the extent of the ice sheets in the Barents and Kara Sea region during the Late Weichselian glacial maximum was less than half that of the maximum model which, up to now, has been widely used as a boundary condition for testing and refining General Circulation Models (GCMs). Preliminary numerical-modelling experiments predict Late Weichselian ice sheets which are larger than the ice extent implied for the Kara Sea region from dated geological evidence, suggesting very low precipitation.

  • Decay Out of the Doubly Magic Superdeformed Band in the N=Z Nucleus 60Zn
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 82:17, s. 3400-3403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The doubly magic superdeformed band in the N = Z nucleus Zn-60 has been identified. Linking transitions connecting this band to the yrast line provide the first spin, parity, and excitation energy measurements for superdeformed states in the A similar to 60 region. The stretched-E2 character and relatively large B(E2) values of these transitions suggest a nonstatistical decay-out process.

  • Comparison of Superdeformed Bands in 61Zn and 60Zn: Possible Evidence for T=0 Pairing
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 60:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The yrast superdeformed band in Zn-61 has been established using Si-28(Ar-36, 2pn)Zn-61 and Ca-40(Si-29, 2 alpha)Zn-61 fusion-evaporation reactions. The excitation energy of this band was determined via two transitions that link this band to the normally deformed states. Lifetime analysis of this band resulted in a quadrupole moment of Q(t) = 3.0 +/- (0.5)(0.4)e b, which corresponds to a deformation of beta(2) = 0.50+/-(0.07)(0.06). A comparison of the J((2)) dynamical moments of inertia of the yrast superdeformed band in Zn-61 with those in Zn-60 shows a nearly complete blocking of the observed alignment in Zn-60, indicating that T=0 proton-neutron pair correlations may be present in Zn-60. • Effects of peroxovanadate and vanadate on insulin binding, degradation and sensitivity in rat adipocytes
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta. - 0006-3002 .- 1878-2434. ; 1310:1, s. 103-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of vanadate and the stable peroxovanadate compound bpV(pic) on insulin binding and degradation were investigated in rat adipocytes under conditions of ongoing receptor cycling. Both bpV(pic) and vanadate increased 125I-insulin binding to intact cells through an increase in apparent receptor affinity. The maximal effect of bpV(pic) was to increase binding approximately 4-fold (EC50 0.06 +/- 0.01 mM), whereas vanadate increased binding approximately 2-fold (EC50 1.4 +/- 0.2 mM). Removal of cell surface insulin-receptor complexes with trypsin showed that the effects on binding exerted by bpV(pic) and vanadate were due to a similar increase in both cell surface binding and intracellular accumulation of radioactivity. Both bpV(pic) and vanadate inhibited the degradation of 125I-insulin in medium containing 1% bovine serum albumin. The ratio of degraded/intact intracellular 125I-insulin was also markedly reduced by these agents, suggesting that they inhibit intracellular insulin-degrading proteases. Similar to previous findings with vanadate, bpV(pic) stimulated glucose transport and, at low concentrations, enhanced insulin sensitivity. Taken together, these data demonstrate that both bpV(pic) and vanadate inhibit insulin degradation. In addition, they significantly enhance cell surface insulin binding in rat fat cells and this is associated with an improved insulin sensitivity.

  • Peroxovanadate and insulin action in adipocytes from NIDDM patients. Evidence against a primary defect in tyrosine phosphorylation
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0012-186X .- 1432-0428. ; 40:10, s. 1197-1203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the effects of insulin and the stable peroxovanadate compound potassium bisperoxopicolinatooxovanadate (bpV(pic)), a potent inhibitor of phosphotyrosine phosphatases, on lipolysis and glucose uptake in subcutaneous adipocytes from 10 male patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and 10 matched non-diabetic control subjects. Lipolysis stimulated by isoprenaline or the cAMP analogue, 8-bromo-cyclic AMP (8-br-cAMP), was reduced by approximately 40 % in NIDDM compared to control subjects. In both groups bpV(pic) exerted an antilipolytic effect that was similar to insulin (∼ 50 % inhibition). 14C-U-glucose uptake was dose-dependently increased by bpV(pic) treatment, but this effect and also that of insulin were impaired in NIDDM compared to control (bpV(pic) 1.6-fold vs 2.4-fold and insulin 2.2-fold vs 3.4-fold). Furthermore, low concentrations of bpV(pic) did not affect insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, although tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor β-subunit was clearly increased by bpV(pic). In conclusion, 1) β-adrenergic stimulation of lipolysis in vitro is attenuated in NIDDM adipocytes due to post-receptor mechanisms. 2) Both insulin and bpV(pic) decrease lipolysis and enhance glucose uptake in control as well as NIDDM adipocytes. The effect on glucose uptake, but not that on lipolysis, is impaired in NIDDM cells. 3) Peroxovanadate does not improve sensitivity and responsiveness to insulin in NIDDM adipocytes, showing that insulin-resistant glucose uptake in NIDDM is not overcome by phosphotyrosine-phosphatase inhibition and, thus, probably is not caused by impaired tyrosine phosphorylation events alone.
