  • Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Innovation. - 2666-6758. ; 5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

  • A TPA-caged precursor of (imino)coumarin for "turn-on" fluorogenic detection of Cu
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Analytica Chimica Acta. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0003-2670 .- 1873-4324. ; 933, s. 189-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We strategize to utilize the precursors of (imino) coumarin fluorophores to deliver novel reactive Cu+ probes, where tris[(2-pyridyl)-methyl] amine (TPA) works as a reactive receptor towards Cu+. To verify this strategy, CP1, a representative probe and relevant sensing behaviors towards Cu+ are presented here. CP1 features good solubility and fast response for monitoring labile copper in aqueous solution and live cells. The sensing mechanism of CP1 is determined by HPLC titration and mass spectrometric analysis. The probe CP1 exhibits a 60-fold fluorescence enhancement and a detection limitation of 10.8 nM upon the detection of Cu+. CP1 is further applied for imaging labile copper in live cells. This work provides a starting point for future development of Cu+ probes, based on in situ formation of (imino) coumarin scaffolds, as well as their further investigations of copper signaling and biological events. • Homocysteine accelerates hepatocyte autophagy by upregulating TFEB via DNMT3b-mediated DNA hypomethylation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica. - : China Science Publishing & Media Ltd.. - 1672-9145. ; 55:8, s. 1184-1192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autophagy plays a critical role in the physiology and pathophysiology of hepatocytes. High level of homocysteine (Hcy) promotes autophagy in hepatocytes, but the underlying mechanism is still unknown. Here, we investigate the relationship between Hcy-induced autophagy level and the expression of nuclear transcription factor EB (TFEB). The results show that Hcy-induced autophagy level is mediated by upregulation of TFEB. Silencing of TFEB decreases the level of autophagy-related protein LC3BII/I and increases p62 expression level in hepatocytes after exposure to Hcy. Moreover, the effect of Hcy on the expression of TFEB is regulated by hypomethylation of the TFEB promoter catalyzed by DNA methyltransferase 3b (DNMT3b). In summary, this study shows that Hcy can activate autophagy by inhibiting DNMT3b-mediated DNA methylation and upregulating TFEB expression. These findings provide another new mechanism for Hcy-induced autophagy in hepatocytes.

  • CTAB@BiOCl: a highly adsorptive photocatalyst for eliminating dye contamination
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: RSC Advances. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2046-2069. ; 6:22, s. 18577-18582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The title composite was synthesized under facile conditions by hydrolysis and co-precipitation. Through comparative studies, it was found that the morphology, structure and properties were affected by hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) doping. Although the surface area decreases from 53.5 to 7.5 m(2) g(-1), it was found that CTAB@BiOCl exhibits higher adsorption capacity than the isolated BiOCl, and still maintains good photocatalytic activity, which is a little worse than the isolated BiOCl has. This was caused by the lower content of BiOCl in CTAB@BiOCl, which is less than 70%. The studies show that, in high concentrations of dye-contaminated water, the composite exhibits strong adsorption capacities of 901 mg g(-1) to Congo Red (CR) and 699 mg g(-1) to Reactive Red 3 (X3B). In the low-concentration case, it is able to process photocatalysis of those dyes. In the recycling experiment, the CTAB@BiOCl composite was regenerated in situ. And CTAB in the composite was almost completely degraded after five cycles, resulting in the regenerated BiOCl. Subsequently, the surface area of the composite increases from 7.5 to 22.62 m(2) g(-1), and along with this the adsorption capacities to CR and X3B decrease obviously due to the absence of the CTAB component. In addition, the photocatalysis activity of the generated composite has been promoted to be similar to the isolated BiOCl.

  • Comparison between past and future extreme precipitations simulated by global and regional climate models over the Tibetan Plateau
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Climatology. - : Wiley. - 0899-8418 .- 1097-0088. ; 38:3, s. 1285-1297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Past studies on regional climate change over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) have mainly looked at changes in the mean climate. This study focuses on past and future extreme precipitations, simulated by global and regional climate models over the TP. To assess the influence of large-scale forcing on dynamic downscaling using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, downscaling results for the historical period (1980–2005) with ERA-Interim reanalysis and CCSM4 as forcings are evaluated against a gridded observational data set. These are inter-compared before future projections for the period 2005–2100 under two scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The followings are obtained: (1) the reanalysis greatly overestimates not only the mean, but also extreme precipitation. The overestimation in CCSM4 is even larger than that of the reanalysis. (2) The two downscalings outperform their forcings, reflected by reduced overestimation for extreme precipitation frequency, increased spatial pattern correlations and more accurate linear trends, especially for the downscaling driven by CCSM. This demonstrates the constraining power of the fine-scale modelling and the importance of more realistic representations of surface forcing and related processes in the TP. (3) CCSM4 projects a general wetting across the whole TP with increases of heavy precipitation as well as the wetting intensification with warming. WRF also projects an overall wetting, but the wetting is less sensitive to the warming and there is more of an increase in light precipitation frequency. More importantly, a diverse pattern with wetting in the north and drying in the south is found in the dynamical downscaling in contrast to the uniform wetting in its forcing.

  • Preclinical profile of ITI-214, an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 1, for enhancement of memory performance in rats
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Psychopharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0033-3158 .- 1432-2072. ; 233:17, s. 3113-3124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rationale: Therapeutic agents for memory enhancement in psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, are urgently needed. Objective: The aim of this study is to characterize the preclinical profile of ITI-214, a potent inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 1 (PDE1).Methods: ITI-214 was assayed for inhibition of PDE1 versus other PDE enzyme families using recombinant human PDE enzymes and for off-target binding to 70 substrates (General SEP II diversity panel; Caliper Life Sciences). Effects of ITI-214 (0.1–10 mg/kg, po) on memory performance were assayed in rats using the novel object recognition (NOR) paradigm, with drug given at specified time points prior to or following exposure to objects in an open field. ITI-214 was evaluated for potential drug-drug interaction with risperidone in rats using conditioned avoidance response (CAR) and pharmacokinetic assessments. Results: ITI-214 inhibited PDE1A (Ki = 33 pmol) with >1000-fold selectivity for the nearest other PDE family (PDE4D) and displayed minimal off-target binding interactions in a 70-substrate selectivity profile. By using specific timing of oral ITI-214 administration, it was demonstrated in the NOR that ITI-214 is able to enhance acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval memory processes. All memory effects were in the absence of effects on exploratory behavior. ITI-214 did not disrupt the risperidone pharmacokinetic profile or effects in CAR.Conclusions: ITI-214 improved the memory processes of acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval across a broad dose range (0.1–10 mg/kg, po) without disrupting the antipsychotic-like activity of a clinical antipsychotic medication, specifically risperidone. Clinical development of ITI-214 is currently in progress.

  • Multi-stage state of health estimation of lithium-ion battery with high tolerance to heavily-partial charging
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. - 0885-8993 .- 1941-0107. ; 37:6, s. 7432-7442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • State of health (SOH) is critical to the management of lithium-ion battery (LIB) due to its deep insight into the health diagnostic and protection. However, the absence of complete charging data, which is common in practice, risks impairing the charging-based SOH estimators. This paper proposes a multi-stage SOH estimation method with a broad scope of applications, including the unfavorable but practical scenarios of heavily-partial charging. In particular, different sets of health indicators (HIs), covering both the morphological IC features and the voltage entropy information, are extracted from the partial CC charging data with different initial charging voltage to characterize the aging status. Following this endeavor, artificial neural network (ANN)-based HI fusion is proposed to estimate the SOH of LIB precisely in real time. The proposed method is evaluated with long-term aging experiments performed on different types of LIBs. Results validate several superior merits of the proposed method, including high estimation accuracy, high tolerance to partial charging, strong robustness to cell inconsistency, and wide generality to different battery types.

  • Noise-Immune Model Identification and State-of-Charge Estimation for Lithium-Ion Battery Using Bilinear Parameterization
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. - 0278-0046 .- 1557-9948. ; 68:1, s. 312-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate estimation of state of charge (SOC) is critical to the safe and efficient utilization of a battery system. Model-based SOC observers have been widely used due to their high accuracy and robustness, but they rely on a well-parameterized battery model. This article scrutinizes the effect of measurement noises on model parameter identification and SOC estimation. A novel parameterization method combining instrumental variable (IV) estimation and bilinear principle is proposed to compensate for the noise-induced biases of model identification. Specifically, the IV estimator is used to reformulate an overdetermined system so as to allow coestimating the model parameters and noise variances. The coestimation problem is then decoupled into two linear subproblems which are solved efficiently by a two-stage least squares algorithm in a recursive manner. The parameterization method is further combined with a Luenberger observer to estimate the SOC in real time. Simulations and experiments are performed to validate the proposed method. Results reveal that the proposed method is superior to existing method in terms of the immunity to noise corruption.

  • Effects of soluble sulfide on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryonic development
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 1382-6689 .- 1872-7077. ; 42, s. 183-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zebrafish embryos were used to investigate the developmental effects of sulfide. Mortality, teratogenic effects, and developmental parameters of early developmental embryos were recorded. The biodistribution of sulfide in developing zebrafish embryos and larvae were measured through fluorescence imaging. The influences of sulfide on the cardiac function and development velocity of zebrafish embryos were dependent on sulfide concentration. Heart rate and development velocity increased with exposure to lower sulfide concentrations, which may be attributed to the cardioprotective properties of H2S. Meanwhile, heart rate and development velocity decreased, whereas pericardial edema, yolk sac edema, and trunk abnormalities occurred with exposure to higher sulfide concentrations. Sulfide accumulated in the blastoderm of early developmental embryos and was then transported to the yolk sac and yolk extension with the embryonic development. Finally, sulfide was transferred from the yolk to the eyes of zebrafish larvae. The details of mechanism of sulfide toxicity require further research. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Aging characteristics-based health diagnosis and remaining useful life prognostics for lithium-ion batteries
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: eTransportation. - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-1168. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper developed methods for improving the practicability of battery health diagnosis and remaining useful life prognostics. Battery state of health was estimated using a feature extraction-based method based on the charging voltage curve. Battery remaining useful life was predicted by identifying recognizable aging stages. Acceleration aging test data for 9 cells at constant current rates including 0.5C, 1C, 1.5C, and 2C, and dynamic current rates were used to validate the developed methods. The capacity estimates were accurate with estimation errors less than 1% at most cycles. The remaining useful life was predicted within 0.3 s at dynamic current rates, with the prediction errors at most cycles less than 10 after 300 cycles and the 95% confidence intervals covering about 20 cycles for each prediction.
