    • Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

  • Direct Coupling of Plasmonic and Photonic Nanowires for Hybrid Nanophotonic Components and Circuits

    • We report direct coupling of plasmonic and photonic nanowires using ultracompact near-field interaction. Photon-plasmon coupling efficiency up to 80% with coupling length down to the 200 nm level is achieved between individual Ag and ZnO nanowires. Hybrid nanophotonic components, including polarization splitters, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and microring cavities, are fabricated out of coupled Ag and ZnO nanowires. These components offer relatively low loss with subwavelength confinement; a hybrid nanowire microcavity exhibits a Q-factor of 520.

    • An oncogenic D842V mutation in the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) alpha-receptor (Pdgfra) has recently been described in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors. In order to test if the same mutation would confer oncogenic properties to the homologous PDGF beta-receptor (Pdgfrb), the corresponding aspartic acid residue at position 849 of Pdgfrb was changed into valine (D849V) using a knock-in strategy. This mutation turned out to be dominantly lethal and caused death even in chimeras (from 345 transferred chimeric blastocysts, no living coat chimeras were detected). Experiments employing mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) indicated hyperactivity of the mutant receptor. The mutant receptor was phosphorylated in a ligand-independent manner and, in contrast to wild-type MEFs, mutant cells proliferated even in the absence of ligand. Knockout experiments have previously indicated a role for Pdgfrb in placental development. We therefore analyzed wild-type and Pdgfrb D849V chimeric placentas from different gestational stages. No differences were detected at embryonic days 11.5 and 13.5 (n=4). At embryonic day 17.5, however, chimeric placentas (n=3/4) displayed abnormalities both in the labyrinth and in the chorionic plate. The changes included hyper-proliferation of alpha-smooth muscle actin and platelet/endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 positive cells in the labyrinth and cells in the chorionic plate. In addition, the fetal blood vessel compartment of the labyrinth was completely disorganized.

    • We propose a new design of low-contrast all-solid bandgap fiber with low confinement and bend losses within low-order bandgaps. By introducing an index depressed layer around the high index rod in fiber cladding, we theoretically predict that the confinement loss of the proposed all-solid bandgap fiber would be significantly improved. Due to the enlarged index mismatch of the guided core mode and the edge of the bandgaps, the critical bend radius of the proposed fiber is remarkably reduced.

    • We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.

  • Periodicity of sediment load and runoff in the Yangtze River basin and possible impacts of climatic changes and human activities

    • Periodicity of the runoff and the sediment load, and possible impacts from human activities and climatic changes, in the Yangtze River basin during 1963-2004 are discussed based oil the monthly sediment and runoff data, and using the wavelet approach. Research results indicated that: (a) Sediment load changes are severely impacted by the different types of human activity (e.g. construction of water reservoirs, deforestation/afforestation); and the runoff variability is the direct result of climatic changes, e.g. the precipitation changes. (b) The impacts of human activity and climatic changes on the sediment load and runoff changes are greater in smaller river basins (e.g. the Jialingjiang River basin) than in larger river basins. The response of sediment load and runoff changes to the impacts of human activities and climatic changes are prompt and prominent in the Jialingjiang River basin relative to those in the mainstem of the Yangtze River basin. (c) Construction of the Three Gorges Dam has already had obvious impacts on the sediment transport process in the middle and lower Yangtze River basin, but shows no obvious influence on the runoff changes. Construction of the Three Gorges Dam will result in further re-adjustment of the scouring/filling process within the river channel in the middle and lower Yangtze River basin, and have corresponding effects on the altered sediment load because of the Dam’s operation for the river channel, ecology, Sustainable social economy and even the development of the Yangtze Delta. This will be of concern to local governments and policy makers.
