  • Hypersonic attenuation in cesium borate glasses: Relaxation and anharmonicity
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Materials Science & Engineering A: Structural Materials: Properties, Microstructure and Processing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-5093. ; 521-22, s. 247-250
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The internal friction and the sound velocity in a cesium borate glass (Cs(2)O)(0.14)(B(2)O(3))(0.86) were measured at ultrasonic and hypersonic frequencies by Brillouin scattering measurements over the temperature range between 15 and 300 K. The analysis of the experimental results show that, in addition to thermally activated local motions of structural defects, the vibrational anharmonicity contributes substantially to the temperatures dependences of both the hypersonic loss and velocity. It has been also proved that above 150 K the vibrational anharmonicity appears to be governed by the Akhiezer mechanism of phonon viscosity.

  • Spectral Mammography with X-Ray Optics and a Photon-Counting Detector
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Early detection is vital to successfully treating breast cancer, and mammography screening is the most efficient and wide-spread method to reach this goal. Imaging low-contrast targets, while minimizing the radiation exposure to a large population is, however, a major challenge. Optimizing the image quality per unit radiation dose is therefore essential. In this thesis, two optimization schemes with respect to x-ray photon energy have been investigated: filtering the incident spectrum with refractive x-ray optics (spectral shaping), and utilizing the transmitted spectrum with energy-resolved photon-counting detectors (spectral imaging). Two types of x-ray lenses were experimentally characterized, and modeled using ray tracing, field propagation, and geometrical optics. Spectral shaping reduced dose approximately 20% compared to an absorption-filtered reference system with the same signal-to-noise ratio, scan time, and spatial resolution. In addition, a focusing pre-object collimator based on the same type of optics reduced divergence of the radiation and improved photon economy by about 50%. A photon-counting silicon detector was investigated in terms of energy resolution and its feasibility for spectral imaging. Contrast-enhanced tumor imaging with a system based on the detector was characterized and optimized with a model that took anatomical noise into account. Improvement in an ideal-observer detectability index by a factor of 2 to 8 over that obtained by conventional absorption imaging was found for different levels of anatomical noise and breast density. Increased conspicuity was confirmed by experiment. Further, the model was extended to include imaging of unenhanced lesions. Detectability of microcalcifications increased no more than a few percent, whereas the ability to detect large tumors might improve on the order of 50% despite the low attenuation difference between glandular and cancerous tissue. It is clear that inclusion of anatomical noise and imaging task in spectral optimization may yield completely different results than an analysis based solely on quantum noise.

  • Evolvable assembly systems : Towards user friendly manufacturing
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: ISAM 2007 - IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing. - : IEEE. - 1424405637 - 9781424405633 ; , s. 288-293
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Besides coping with the highly dynamic product and production system life cycles with ever-changing requirements, modern assembly systems also need to be user-friendly. Their modularity at fine granularity-level combined with local intelligence and a distributed control approach allows the systems to evolve together with the requirements - but their complexity would soon not be manageable from outside any more if user-friendliness was not considered a major criterion. Systems must be made to serve their users. Thanks to Self-* capabilities, systems can gain an increasingly high degree of autonomy. Diagnosis plays a particularly important role in this process.

  • Comparison of thorium-based fuels with different fissile components in existing boiling water reactors
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proc. Int. Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP '09). ; 3, s. 1982-1987
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three different types of thorium based BWR fuel have been developed, in each of which thorium was combined with a different fissile component, the three components being reactor grade plutonium, uranium enriched to 20% in uranium 235 and pure uranium 233. A BWR nuclear bundle design, based on the geometrical fuel assembly design GE14, was developed for each of these fissile components. The properties and performance of the corresponding fuel assemblies were investigated via full core calculations carried out for an existing BWR and compared with the ones of an ordinary Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) fuel, which was developed for reference. The fuel assemblies and cores were designed to meet existing fuel design criteria, and were then analyzed with regards to reactivity coefficients, delayed neutron fractions, control rod worths and shutdown margins. The results show that all three alternatives seem to be feasible, although some difficulties remain with complying with the thermal limits, and with the moderator temperature and coolant void coefficients of the U-233 containing fuel being positive under some circumstances.

  • Calculation of higher moments of the neutron multiplication process in a time-varying medium
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 34:5, s. 385-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The zero-power reactor noise theory in a steady neutron multiplying medium was extended recently to a medium randomly varying in time to bridge the fields of the zero-power and the power reactor noise. For a time-varying medium in which the transition probability randomly fluctuates, only the use of the probability generating function technique based on the forward master equation approach is practical. However, with the forward master equation approach, the treatment of the joint moments of the neutron number and the medium state leads to a closure problem. Recently, the capability of the moment calculation technique for such cases was extended such that the closure problem could be solved exactly. The present paper describes and demonstrates this closure-free moment calculation technique in a time-varying binary multiplying medium, in which the medium state has two possible realizations. In addition to the first two moments of the neutron number N alone (irrespective of the medium state η), the joint moments of Nn and ηm, i.e., , were also obtained in a compact form for n = 1, 2 and arbitrary values of m, without a closure assumption. It was found that, for even m values, the asymptotic values of Nn and ηm are uncorrelated, whereas, for odd m values, they are negatively correlated, namely, their covariance is less than zero. The first two moments of the neutron number theoretically obtained were verified by the Monte Carlo technique. A perfect agreement was found between the Monte Carlo and the theoretical solutions. The closure-free moment calculation technique demonstrated in the present paper is expected to be applicable to various other problems related to the birth-and-death process with fluctuations of the transition probability, in which a closure problem occurs.

  • Intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) : Susceptibility investigations and classification of civilian systems and equipment
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This PhD thesis addresses the threat posed to society by sources that can produce high power electromagnetic pulses (HEPM) and be used maliciously to disturb or damage electronic equipment. The vulnerability from intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) has increased in the recent decades due to the widespread dependence of the civil society on sensitive electronic systems and proliferation of radiation sources. As the characteristics of the disturbances associated with IEMI often have very high frequency content, the existing mitigation measures and protection components may not be adequate. It was seen that for ultra wideband (UWB) transients low voltage protection components may not work as intended, due to parasitic components that arises from the packaging of the device. The large spatial distribution of many civilian facilities and critical infra-structures (e.g., power generation, communications, train system, etc.) presents many unexpected ports for an attacker as the majority of the parts of these systems are not protected or secure. As the new European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) will utilize wireless communication for communication and control of the trains the vulnerability from different radiating HPEM sources was investigated. Angles of incidence and frequencies that are a threat in a given situation are identified. Due to the possibility of unexpected ports, the propagation of differential mode ultra wideband transients in low voltage power networks, when injected into a power socket of a facility, was studied. The effects on the transient propagation from cable bends, switches and junctions were studied, both in a laboratory setup and in the network of a facility. Also, as modern electronic equipment and systems may not be tested for waveforms and disturbances other than standardized EMC tests, experiments on some common commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment were performed with non-standard test situation. It was seen that these could easily be disturbed or even permanently damaged. In addition, due to the inherent difficulties with IEMI, a new method for classifying facilities from IEMI is suggested. It is based on available terminology of accessibility (A), susceptibility (S) and consequence (C), but expands these and forms the so called IEMI/ASC-cube.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1866-6892 .- 1866-6906. ; 30:7, s. 746-761
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present the design and verification of the optics of the Swedish Heterodyne Facility Instrument (SHeFI) receiver installed in the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope during spring 2008. SHeFI is located in the Nasmyth instrumentation Cabin A (NCA). The receiver has been designed to have 6 frequency channels, of which four receiver channels have been built, and characterized: 211-275 GHz(Band 1), 275-370 GHz (Band 2), 385-500 GHz (Band 3), and 1250-1390 GHz (Band T2). Bands 1, 2, and T2 are installed at the telescope and are currently in operation. The optical design is driven by the requirement of frequency independent illumination of the secondary with -12 dB edge taper for each frequency channel and the limitation (beam clearance through the Nasmyth tube and the elevation encoder) imposed by the receiver position in the NCA. This paper describes the design approach, optimization, and verification of the optical system, coupling each individual receiving beam to the common optics of the telescope.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 106:5, s. 054510-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Admittance spectroscopy is extended for measuring capacitance and conductance on metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures as a function of gate voltage, frequency, and temperature. An automatic setup has been designed for collecting data along these dimensions in one measurement cycle. The theory for admittance spectroscopy has been developed by starting from basic charge carrier statistics. Using numerical integration of energy dependent parameters instead of the commonly used analytical solution, conductance dispersion curves are obtained which do not need to be adjusted by assuming lateral surface potential variations at the oxide-semiconductor interface. Also, we find that interface state densities extracted by using traditional methods are four times lower than those obtained by using our theory. Experimental data presented in three-dimensional plots are compared with theoretical calculations, revealing the possibilities and limitations of the conductance method.

  • RSFQ based microwave controller for qubit
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 11th International Superconducting Electronics Conference, Washington DC, USA, June 10-14, 2007.. ; 11, s. P-U05
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present a Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) microwave controller for superconducting qubits. Applying microwaves from room temperature sources is the conventional approach to excite quantum state transitions. Finding a method to apply short microwave bursts with a narrow linewidth is a challenge for on-chip Josephson based oscillators. We present a scheme containing an RSFQ pulse generator, ultra narrowband filter, SQUID based resonator and coupler. The operating frequency of the designed controller is 3-6 GHz. The unique feature of this design is a SQUID based resonator. By varying magnetic field in the SQUID, theresonance length can be varied between λ/4 and λ/2. Theresonator is added as a shunt between the filter and coupler. Transmission of microwave signals from the filter to the output is determined by the shunt resonance. RSFQ T flip-flop circuit is designed to control the magnetic field applied to the SQUID in the resonator. Miniaturization of the coupler of 2-10 GHz has been done using a quasi-lumped element designed. We present the simulations results for the frequency response ofdifferent resonance lengths of the modulator.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Design spaces. - Helsingfors : Edita Publishing Oy. ; , s. 34-43
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over the last decades there has been a dramatic change in the design agenda within the field of IT design. With the increase of mobile and wireless devices and the massive expansion of Internet availability the classic object of design - is about to vanish. Even if we conceive the setting where information technology is used as a 'system', this system can hardly be seen as the outcome of a system design process. Arguably, IT design is today guided by new design agendas. Ubiquitous computing and from the user side information ecologies seem to be more appropriate labels for the emerging technology. The objects of design has correspondingly been changing from systems to devices, tools or information appliances. This radical opening of the question of what to design has led to an apparent confusion on how to design. Just as the field of information systems is about to mature with a broad and widely accepted repertoire of design approaches and methods, ranging from workflow analysis to user involvement, this battery of approaches is loosing ground in favor of more techno-centric explorations, such as Tangible Computing. In our view there seem to be a growing divide between mainly North American contributions to IT design emphasizing new information technology concepts such as ubiquitous computing, tangible interaction and augmented reality, and mainly European contributions emphasizing the role of particular information technology applications in the light of in-depth studies of the potential contexts of use.

  • DJ scratching performance techniques : Analysis and synthesis
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proc. Stockholm Music Acoustics Conference. ; , s. 693-696
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scratching is a popular way of making music, turning the DJ into a musician. Normally scratching is done using a vinyl record, a turntable and a mixer. Vinyl manipulation is built up by a number of specialized techniques that have been analysed in a previous study. The present study has two main objectives. First is to better understand and model turntable scratching as performed by DJs. Second is to design a gesture controller for physical sound models, i.e. models of friction sounds. We attached sensors to a DJ equipment set-up. Then a DJ was asked to perform typical scratch gestures both isolated and in a musical context, i.e. as in a real performance. He also was asked to play with different emotions: sad, angry, happy and fearful. A model of the techniques used by the DJ was built based on the analysis of the collected data. The implementation of the model has been done in pd. The Radio Baton, with specially adapted gesture controllers, has been used for controlling the model. The system has been played by professional DJs in concerts.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiences gain increasing attention in design research, but theories are inconsistent, and the foundations of different methods are rarely discussed. Design research has sui generis no fixed epistemology, and is open to methodological eclecticism. However, as paradigms successively change from positivistic towards more comprehensive views, discussions on how underlying theoretical assumptions influence approaches are needed. This paper examines and compares axiological, epistemological and methodological aspects of two perspectives: Kansei engineering, and a postmodernist framework. Both frameworks aim to match designers' conceptions of product symbolism etc. to those of the user group, but they evolve from different theoretical starting points. Analyzing the contents of underlying theories and their influence on methods and expected results is an important part of theory development that may also support designers in making methodological choices.

    • A common theme of many discussions among embodied cognition researchers is whether or not cognition is making use of epresentations. This debate has recently been called a “debate for the sake of appearance” because there is no agreed upon way of identifying what is a representation. Therefore, instead of elaborating our own position on whether embodied cognition uses representation, we structure the debate by (1) reviewing three types of mechanisms in models of embodied cognition that might be considered candidates for epresentationhood and (2) outlining criteria for what is or is not a representation in embodied cognition.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Food Chemistry. - 0308-8146 .- 1873-7072. ; 71:3, s. 363-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flavour and texture in cream cheese depend on the microstructure. The objective of this work was to study the influence of fat content, salt content and homogenisation pressure on the microstructure and sensory properties of cream cheese. Twelve types of cream cheese were produced according to a full-factorial design, whereby the fat content was set at three levels, the salt content at two levels and the homogenisation pressure at two levels. The cheeses were analysed by a sensory panel, using both quantitative descriptive profiling and time intensity (T1) evaluation, and by using a confocal laser scanning microscope, CLSM, whereby the microstructure of the cheeses was analysed. All the design parameters had a significant influence on the flavour and texture, although fat had the largest effect. Interaction effects between the design parameters were also found to influence the character of cream cheese. The results showed that it is possible to create a cream cheese with lower fat content and with sensory attributes similar to the attributes in cream cheese with high fat content, by modification of production parameters.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IFIP INTERACT01. - : IFIP Technical Committee No 13 on Human-Computer Interaction. ; , s. 399-406
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper outlines design ideas from a project dealing with different interaction concepts for the design of a computer based navigation system for truck drivers. The incentive for thinking about interaction concepts is that programming of navigation systems often occurs while driving, since that is when the support is needed. We have been working with ethnographical studies of truck drivers driving both over short and long distances. There has been quite a lot of work done in the field of cars and navigation, in this paper however the main theme is not navigation in cars as such, but the truck environment as an example of a high-demanding room for work activities. This lead to a design situation where the artifact and the activity has to go together, the artifact has to ‘melt-in’ to the work practice. We discuss how the design of computational power can melt-in to the work-practice without demanding too much of the attention needed for driving the truck safely.

    • Sketching is a most central activity within most design projects. But what happens if we adopt the ideas of collaborative design and invite participants that are not trained to sketch in to the design process, how can they participate in this central activity? This paper offers an introduction to how design material based on ethnography can be understood as sketching material. It suggests a process where the sketching tools are constructed within the scope of the project. Some practical details of how the design material has been co-authored will be explored. Finally, this paper shows how the design material has been used to co-author possible futures within the scope of design sessions.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spatial organization of the workplace affects the work going on there. The technology used, changes the work practice. This paper describes a design process where different aspects of workplace design for project-based office work have been combined into one multi-stakeholder project, integrating the spatial aspects, the furniture, the information technology, and the IT-services that are connected to work. To have several different partners with different interests and competencies collaborating in a future oriented design process puts certain demands on the setup of the process and the tools being used. Taking a starting point in existing work practice, we have driven this project with techniques most often used for user-involvement. Scenario building played a crucial role in tying the process together. The concrete result is a completed concept proposal for an actual “office of the future” layout, which integrates advanced information technology and service solutions. The case shows that it is possible to reach innovative consensus-anchored results with the described design method.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research Practice. - 1712-851X. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the Participatory Design community as well as the Computer Supported Cooperative Work tradition, a lot of effort has been put into the question of letting field studies inform design. In this paper, we describe how game-like approaches can be used as a way of exploring a practice from a design point of view. Thinking of ethnographic fieldwork as a base for sketching, rather than descriptions, creates openness that invites collaborative authoring. The concept of playful collaborative exploration suggests certain ways of interacting with material from field studies so that it becomes a design material for an open-ended design process. We have carried out field studies, transformed the field material into design material, and set up a design game for working with it together with the people we followed in the field. The design game builds on an idea about the power of narratives and the benefits of constraining rules. We believe that this framework for collaboration opens for playfulness, experimentation, and new design ideas.

    • During the last few years personas has become an established design technique within the IT-design field. Using personas has proven itself as a valuable approach for designers to switch between a developer's perspective and a user's perspectivein the design process. The technique is claimed to help designers in keeping a clear focus and shaping a consistent user-interface by making ‘the user’ present in the design work. In this paper we report on a number of projects where we have elaborated on the persona approach for collaborative design. With the goalof creating ‘user presence’ in the design process, we have developed an approach building on a combination of ethnographic exploration, participatory inquiry, and collaborative design. This paper carries two interrelated points: the grounding of personasin existing practice; and the notion that ‘the user’ is created as an ongoing process throughout the design work.
