  • Leçons : an Approach to a System for Machine Learning, Improvisation and Music Performance
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Computer Music Modeling and Retreival. - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 3540209220
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims at describing an approach to the music performancesituation as a laboratory for investigating interactivity. I would like to present“Leçons pour un apprenti sourd-muet” 1, where the basic idea isthat of two improvisers, a saxophonist and a computer, engaged in a seriesof musical questions and responses. The situation is inspired fromthe Japanese shakuhachi tradition, where imitating the master performeris a prime element in the apprentice’s learning process. Through listeningand imitation, the computer’s responses get closer to that of its master foreach turn. In this sense, the computer’s playing emanates from the saxophonist’sphrases and the interactivity in “Leçons” takes place on thelevel of the composition.

  • Teknisk utvärdering av elektroniska publiceringsplattformar
  • 2003

  • Halftoning and Color Noise
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Ninth Color Imaging Conference: Color Science and Engineering: Systems, Technologies, and Applications. - : The Society for Imaging Science and Technology. - 0892082356 ; , s. 148-188
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A frequency modulated color halftoning algorithm is presented in this paper.Unlike the normal approach of halftoning a color image,in which the color separations of the original image are halftoned independently, the original color image is halftoned in a context dependent manner. The strategy to reduce color noise and gain control over color gamut is to prevent dot-on-dot printing as much as possible. The color shifts that might occur because of this dot-off-dot printing strategy have to be compensated before halftoning. This transformation uses some data for the printer with which the halftoned color image is supposed to be printed. The experiments verify that the color noise is notably smaller in the images that are halftoned by the proposed method compared to the images halftoned using the normal approach of halftoning color images. The method also offers the possibility of treating the color separations of the original image differently if needed. For example, the yellow separation should be treated differently from the other separations, because the yellow dots are less visible than the other color dots when they are printed on a white paper. Two criteria for objectively measuring the quality of the produced results are also discussed.

  • Variational modeling methods for Visualization
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Visualization Handbook. - : Springer. - 9780123875822 ; , s. 381-392
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Publisher Summary Variational modeling techniques are powerful tools for free-form modeling in CAD/CAM applications. Some of the basic principles are carrying over to scientific visualization. Others have to be modified and some totally new methods have been developed over the past couple of years. This chapter gives an extended survey of this area. Surfaces and solids designed in a computer graphics environment have many applications in modeling, animation, and visualization. The chapter concentrates on the visualization part. The chapter starts with the basics from differential geometry, which are essential for any variational method. Then, it surveys on variational surface modeling. The last step is the visualization part of geometric modeling. In this context, surface curves like geodesies and curvature lines play an important role. The corresponding differential equations are nonlinear, and in most cases numerical algorithms must be used. To be sure to visualize features at a high quality, algorithms with an inherent quality control are needed. The chapter presents the geometric algorithms, which satisfy this demand.

  • Information Capacity Revisited - Reflections on Print Quality
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Advances in Printing Science and Technology. - Leatherhead, UK : Pira International. ; , s. 175-184
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advent of digital printing stresses the importance of quality measurement. Print quality measures that give an objective value have long been sought. The aim is 10 be able to dcscrihe objectively the properties of print on paper so that conclusions regarding the apparent quality can be drawn. In this paper, we discuss the measures proposed in the literature and relate them to the subjective quality. Several years ago, the concept of ‘information capacity’ was proposed as such a measure. Some reflections are made in the light of coding. and telecommunication theory. areas in which in information capacity is a vital tool. On the other hand. for the print quality applications. the interest in in formation capacity has in fact been decreasing. An obvious question therefore arises and is treated in this work: Why have we seen so few applications of this theory for practical applications in the area of print? Is the area of print quality so very different from the areas or image compression and telecommunication?

  • New learning modes in the production of presence–distance techniques for education.
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on new learning modes that combine physical and virtual learning spaces and techniques. Synchronous distance technique combined with new dramaturgy and narrative techniques create new learning modes for distance learning. In a series of courses called "Networking Multimedia" students are trained on pedagogical use of video conferencing, integrating several different media tools. The research was based on analysis and evaluation of a large number of video recordings from previous exams and questionnaires among the students. Typical exam projects varied from playing games, give interactive instruction, interactive music performance to virtual marriages, combined ISDN and IP-based videoconferencing and multiple remote control of PCs over the world. During these courses, we have seen that relatively simple techniques can be used for producing programs with a high level of participation and presence – and for the best projects, the technology becomes transparent.

  • Inkjet inline printing : Identification and analysis of critical production related parameters
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inline printing on packaging is becoming an important factor due to market demands for shorter product series and flexibility in production. Print speed, setup time and print quality are examples of important parameters to consider assuring high productivity in the printing process. This paper will identify and analyze production-related factors that characterize productivity in inkjet printing through studies on high-speed inkjet printing. Typical production lines are studied in parallel to characterize demands from the packing machines as well as other related factors. This paper discusses whether the characteristics of the identified factors for inkjet printing work in conjunction with the current production lines. The results indicate that inkjet is an interesting alternative for inline printing, but that the reliability of the inkjet unit is of crucial importance.

  • Yule-Nielsen Effect and Ink-penetration in Multi-chromatic Tone Reproduction
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: IS & T's NIP16: International Conference on Digital Printing Technologies. - 0892082305 ; , s. 363-366
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A framework describing influences of ink penetration and Yule-Nielsen effect on the reflectance and tristimulus values of a halftone sample has been proposed. General expressions of the reflectance values and CIEXYZ tristimulus values have been derived. Simulations for images printed with two inks have been carried out by applying Gaussian type of point spread function (PSF). Dependence of Yule-Nielsen effect on the optical properties of substrate, inks, the dot geometry, ink penetration etc., have been discussed.
