• Speaking Mandy
• 2014
• Ingår i: European Artistic Research Network Conference: Thinking on Stage, May 2 2014, National College of Art and Design, Dublin, EIRE.
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• I will present at the very beginning of a research process, towards the making of a new art work through which I aim to interrogate the heritage of the phonocentric Oralist tradition in the education of Deaf people. I seek to ‘read’ and deconstruct Alexander McKendrick’s film, Mandy (1952) through a co-participatory process - with Deaf people educated through Oralism and of the same generation as the child protagonist in the film - to question the advocacy of entry into the symbolic via the ‘spoken’ and ‘speech-identification’ and its relations to psychoanalytic and inter-subjective, spectator-focused film theory. Through mimetic and performative processes inherent to Oralism (such as speech-reading, lip-reading, ventriloquism, echo-practice, dubbing and lip-synchronisation) I aim to adapt Mandy - itself an adaptation of Hilda Lewis’ novel, 'The Day is Ours' (1947) – in ways that reveal the psychoanalytic dynamics of shame at play in Oralism’s delineation of Deafness as a culture and its adherence to Deafness as a disability.

• 2017
• Ingår i: Memories of a city. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 1101-3303. - 9789188101037 ; , s. 8-16
• Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• Presented at the international conference Challenge the past / diversify the future, the contributions collected herein deal with ways of challenging accepted historical representations of the City by offering modes of recollection and perspectives that capture both multi-sensory and multi-layered aspects of urban context. As such, they offer new empirically grounded research on the experiences of the inhabitants, both past and present, whether individually or as a collective. With a focus on the city as a space that is performed by a host of actants reaching across time through both materiality and memory, the authors critically address modes through which visual, audible, and multi-sensory representations can challenge, diversify or uproot conventions of urban representation. Four projects. Four takes on making representations of a city.

• Female Authorship and the Documentary Image: Theory, Practice and Aesthetics
• 2017
• Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• This two volume set investigates the theoretical and practical framework that informs scholarship on documentary film that has hitherto neglected questions of gender and female authorship. It examines a wide array of documentary phenomena through global and transnational case studies and interviews. It also place a special emphasis on the nature of both individual and collective filmmaking and the ways in which these dynamics inform documentary work.

• Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World
• 2016
• Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
• This volume takes a broad outlook on the concept of transculturality. Contributions from 19 authors and specialists, of almost as many diverse origins, grapple with this concept, each in their own way. How can transculturality be described? How can it help us understand our world? Many of the chapters deal with literary texts, others with the stories told in movies, drama, and visual art. There are texts about the complexity of the European Burqa-Ban debate, the negative aspects of Portuguese multiculturalism, or the border-crossing experiences of Filipino immigrants in Ireland. Several chapters examine stereotypes, the idea of movement, the dissolution of cultural borders, or the nature of bilingual writing. It is a unique contribution to the field, on a virtually global scale.

• Remixing Classics for the Screen : Woody Allen and the Classical Tradition
• 2015
• Ingår i: Studia Oliveriana. - Pesaro : Bononia University Press. - 0562-2964. ; 1, s. 55-76
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Several films by Woody Allen (Interiors, Oedipus Wrecks, Match Point and Mighty Aphrodite) contain elements of classical tradition that have been neglected or oversimplified by film scholarship as references to the director’s personal engagement with psychoanalysis. Using Mighty Aphrodite (1995) as illustration, I argue that these films convey the expression of contemporary social issues through a complex and multi-layered reception of classical culture that goes beyond pure psychoanalysis. In Mighty Aphrodite, specifically, Allen deploys the strict formalism of tragedy and the myth of Oedipus as film mechanisms for contemporary societal discourse. Via evaluation of film and narrative, I demonstrate that Allen’s classical reception is self-reflexive as it refers back to the very processes of performative arts. Furthermore, Allen utilizes the classical tradition as a form of expression in contemporary classical Hollywood narratives and creates a rich cultural experience for his audience; a cinematic treatise on cultural remix, dramatic formalism and classical reception per se.

• A Place in Europe : Proposed project description peered by Project Anywhere
• 2017
• Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
• This is not conceived as an exclusive work but rather a demonstrably inclusive one (albeit resistant to the logic of circular reproduction). Within the process of artistic research and a developing practice, new methods might constitute another form of art. The project has been centered upon the idea of a round table at which a number of people with different competences have collaborated productively to build the project. The divergent competences that make up the project team have all contributed to the development of A Place in Europe, and moreover worked to challenge conventional practices and forms of knowledge belonging to the various fields of expertise in order to foster a spirit of experimentation and novelty. The key point of departure for all collaborators has been the value of approaching the topic from a creative base, and in doing so striving to exchange ideas in a productive manner with others, both at the site and within the process of developing the project and presentation. We have also been collectively mindful of the potentially asymmetrical power relations at play in any process during which “we” film and interact with “them”. We do not seek to speak for ”them” but rather use our collective desire to explore a more inclusive society.

• 2012
• Ingår i: Cinema, critique des images. - Udine : Campanotto. - 9788845612886 ; , s. 230-235
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The Boston Pops is a world-class orchestra playing “non-high Art music” in one of the most prestigious concert venues in the world: Symphony Hall in Boston. The first in its genre, with an impressive array of best-selling recordings, tours, and nation-wide radio and TV broadcasts, the Boston Pops has always been at the forefront of American music and has, over the years, achieved huge popularity. In 1980, famed Hollywood composer John Williams was named to succeed the late Fiedler. While several film composers had conducted film music concerts before, this was the very first case of a Hollywood composer appointed leader of such an important musical institution. During his fourteen-year tenure, Williams seized the opportunity to erode the “iron curtain” that segregated “applied” film music from “absolute” concert music.

• Affective Architecture. Film as a Sensory Transference Tool and an Intimacy Projection Environment
• 2016
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper elucidates how film may offer itself as a tool for both the representation and conception of space that can strengthen an alternative, phenomenological and transcendental position in architecture. The paper underscores that the film camera can work as a kind of amplifier of how we, with our bodies, perceive space and project space. Through an analysis of two films, it points to the medium of film as both a tool and an environment, based on Gernot Böhme's ‘Raum leiblicher Anwesenheit (Böhme2006). These films illustrate how the film's picture frame becomes almost like a skin and through its surface and sound projects both a site and a near-sensual experience simultaneously. The medium of film as both tool and an environment thereby supports an extended sensory-intimate reflection on outer experiences and inner sensations that - in its audio-visual and time-space-based presentation - is close to a human experience. This transference and performance may lead to an extended awareness of touch, as the base for intensive projections of becoming and a new affective architecture.

• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This article assesses the interconnected nature of Southeast Asia around 1900, the transnational entertainment scene in Southeast Asia, and the role of Singapore as a hub for commerce, shipping, and entertainment. The global and regional development of transportation and communications technology and networks facilitated the movement of people, goods, ideas, and amusement forms. The article is based primarily on archival research from colonial newspapers in the region. It surveys and maps more than one hundred itinerant entertainment companies that travelled throughout Southeast Asia around the turn of the century, thereby creating and visualising a circuit of entertainment.

• Ellie’s first time : constructing self-cutting in a teen drama
• 2018
• Ingår i: Journal of Gender Studies. - : Routledge. - 0958-9236 .- 1465-3869. ; 27:5, s. 574-588
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Self-cutting attracted a growing interest in society during the 1990s and the early 2000s, and this was reflected in a similar increase in media during this period. In this article, the example of Ellie Nash’s self-cutting in the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation is used to investigate articulations of the phenomenon during this period. The starting point is that self-cutting, a behaviour that previously had mostly been connected to masculinity, had to be rearticulated to fit into already established constitutions of femininity. If this was not possible, self-cutting could only be understood as a radical and aggressive behaviour easily connected to movements such as Riot Grrrls that emerged during the same period. With the help of formal and narrative methods, and discourse theory, the scene that includes Ellie’s first cut is analysed. The results of the analysis show that themes such as success, control, family and alternative culture framed self-cutting as being executed by girls who are fragile and vulnerable but also sensible. Even if the things that led up to Ellie’s self-cutting were presented as structural problems, the solution for her was individual conversational therapy, which fitted with the hegemonic neoliberal values that dominated this period.

• Surrounded by Images and Meanings : Essays on Media and Cultural Studies
• 2016
• Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
• This book consists of seventeen essays which are categorised into four sections: (1) the theoretical standpoint: semiotic and discursive approach, (2) news photography, television, and Internet in particular context, (3) cinema in contexts, and (4) documentary studies. The topics being discussed in all essays are varied, ranging from media in Asia, film and documentary studies, media and social activism, to cinema and psychoanalysis, as well as covering several concepts, such as class, identity, gender relations, textual analysis, text, context, meaning, and discourse. However, there is one central idea that connects all of them, i.e. offering the readers to detailed elaboration and application of concepts and theories in the field of media and cultural studies.

• 2014
• Ingår i: The International Journal of Screendance 4. - : The Ohio State University Libraries. - 2154-6878. ; 4, s. 130-146
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This essay was developed with support from ke∂ja Writing Movement (www.writingmovement.com). It describes, from a dance practitioner’s point of view, different paradigms within which the dance filmmaker may operate. These paradigms form a progression of the integration of dance and film as well as the established structure of filmmaking, and address how screendance changed the discourses surrounding film. Three paradigms are discussed and contextualized, based on an analysis of works from the standard repertoire and by the author herself: 1. The filmmaking dancer/choreographer: encountering a new medium in search of permanence, new aesthetics, and documentation, mediating the conservative infrastructures of film and television; 2. Choreographing with and for the camera: using acquired film-making skills, investigating new modes of expression based on nonlinear treatment of movement, viewpoints, and sequences; 3. Choreographing non-bodies through film: creating dance from abstract motion, expanding the scope of both dance and film.

• 2016
• Ingår i: Film Fashion and Consumption. - : Intellect. - 2044-2823 .- 2044-2831. ; 5:2, s. 185-211
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Jane Fonda’s intergalactic adventure, Barbarella (Dino De Laurentiis Cinematografica, 1968), looms large in popular culture despite its mild reception in 1968. Disguised under its sartorial splendor, the film’s narrative clearly negotiates social anxieties of the late ‘60s. Similarly, the production design of the film incorporates contemporary elements from art, architecture and fashion. Paco Rabanne is frequently credited as the creator of Fonda’s onscreen parade of highly stylized costumes. Yet, the Spanish designer only created one of her eight outfits. The paper addresses this misconception by exploring how the film’s mise-en-scène captured the contemporary design trends beyond Rabanne’s participation, perpetuating Barbarella as a symbol of its own times.

• 2010
• Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The aim of this conference was to discuss and to elucidate the effects of the last thirtyfive years of feminist studies within art history and visual studies. Since Linda Nochlin published the essay "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" considerable research has been made and published. But is the gender perspective included in contemporary research and teaching? Or is it still marginalized? Except for the feminist perspective, gender and queer theories and ethnicity will be discussed in relation to contemporary research in art history and visual studies, and adjacent disciplines.

• 2019
• Ingår i: Cinema Changes. - Turnhout : Brepols. - 9782503584478 ; , s. ix-xxvi
• Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The present volume seeks to tackle jazz as to its interaction with the film from three vantage points: the formulation of alternative theoretical approaches, the close examination of exemplary case studies, and the survey of the use of jazz in different national cinemas. The latter, in particular, is one of the central concerns, that is to examine how jazz is used outside Hollywood. Because of both Hollywood’s long-time pre-eminent position on the world market and for the fact that jazz and Hollywood hail from the same country, the relationship of jazz with Hollywood cinema has often occupied a preponderant share in the literature. Yet, for these same reasons of exposure and co-nationality, an account of non-Hollywood cinemas should nevertheless have Hollywood as a reference point. Hollywood cinema has been since the late silent era the stylistic and narrative model for any other cinema, a reference point either to be imitated and conformed to, or to be challenged and subverted. Therefore it seems appropriate to open this volume with a brief introduction to jazz and Hollywood. In order to delineate how Hollywood has been using jazz as a cinematic device – that is, how this type of music was used in films as a stylistic, narrative, and thematic element in conjunction and cooperation with all the other devices (dialogue, camerawork, editing, set design, acting…) – it is useful to isolate a handful of recurrent ‘representational categories’. These offer a concise and sample-based survey of how the presentation of jazz (in its many incarnations) has changed in Hollywood cinema through the years, what connotations have been attached to this type of music, and how jazz and its practitioners have been depicted.

• John Williams is best known for such large-scale symphonic works as Star Wars, Superman, the Indiana Jones series and the likes. Yet, his musical roots are also (and strongly) in jazz. In his formative years he had the opportunity to be in touch with some of the finest performers. In the 1950s, while studying 'legitimate' piano music at the Juilliard School in New York, he tickled the ivories in the city's jazz clubs. In the early 1960s, while working in Hollywood as a pianist and an orchestrator, he arranged albums for Mahalia Jackson and Vic Damone. When Williams firmly established himself as a film composer the mid-1960s, he brought in his jazz background as a perhaps less noticeable but yet fundamental component of his style. After a quick introduction about the relation between cinema and jazz in Hollywood history in order to contextualise Williams's film career, the chapter focusses on the Williams film scores in which jazz episodes emerge from beneath the otherwise symphonic texture – for example, 'Cantina Band' in Star Wars (1977), 'Swing, Swing, Swing' in 1941 (1979), 'The Knight Bus' in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) – and on film scores in which jazz is central to the film's narrative: for example, Catch Me if You Can (2002) and The Terminal (2004).

• This paper aims to explore the notion of presentism as a way of looking at the fraught temporalities of the post-/de- ‘pre-fixing frontier’ in colonialism studies. Drawing on various interpretations of the concept, presentism can be said to manifest when societies become unable to imagine a future or a past, because of structured powers keen on preserving the status quo. Using a combination of data from media ethnography and literary criticism, we intend to assess the productivity of an updated notion of presentism for the ongoing debates on the coloniality of power. Instances of arrested and recursive temporalities exemplified in recent Anglophone African novels as well as in Swedish media discourses on migration will serve as case studies. Issues of memory and denial, as well as the ideological claim that enduring phenomena such as immigration should be considered symptoms of a contemporary migratory crisis, will be at the centre of our investigation.
