  • Dark matter-electron interactions in materials beyond the dark photon model
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; 2023:3

    • The search for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles via electronic transitions in underground detectors attracted much theoretical and experimental interest in the past few years. A still open question in this field is whether experimental results can in general be interpreted in a framework where the response of detector materials to an external DM probe is described by a single ionisation or crystal form factor, as expected for the so-called dark photon model. Here, ionisation and crystal form factors are examples of material response functions: interaction-specific integrals of the initial and final state electron wave functions. In this work, we address this question through a systematic classification of the material response functions induced by a wide range of models for spin-0, spin-1/2 and spin-1 DM. We find several examples for which an accurate description of the electronic transition rate at DM direct detection experiments requires material response functions that go beyond those expected for the dark photon model. This concretely illustrates the limitations of a framework that is entirely based on the standard ionisation and crystal form factors, and points towards the need for the general response-function-based formalism we pushed forward recently [1,2]. For the models that require non-standard atomic and crystal response functions, we use the response functions of [1,2] to calculate the DM-induced electronic transition rate in atomic and crystal detectors, and to present 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the strength of the DM-electron interaction from the null results reported by XENON10, XENON1T, EDELWEISS and SENSEI.

  • A Korteweg-DeVries type model for helical soliton solutions for quantum and continuum phenomena
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics C. - : World Scientific. - 0129-1831. ; 32:03

    • Quantum mechanical states are normally described by the Schrödinger equation, which generates real eigenvalues and quantizable solutions which form a basis for the estimation of quantum mechanical observables, such as momentum and kinetic energy. Studying transition in the realm of quantum physics and continuum physics is however more difficult and requires different models. We present here a new equation which bears similarities to the Korteweg–DeVries (KdV) equation and we generate a description of transitions in physics. We describe here the two- and three-dimensional form of the KdV like model dependent on the Plank constant ℏ and generate soliton solutions. The results suggest that transitions are represented by soliton solutions which arrange in a spiral-fashion. By helicity, we propose a conserved pattern of transition at all levels of physics, from quantum physics to macroscopic continuum physics.

    • Context. The light curves of tidally locked hot Jupiters transiting fast-rotating, early-type stars are a rich source of information about both the planet and star, with full-phase coverage enabling a detailed atmospheric characterisation of the planet. Although it is possible to determine the true spin-orbit angle ψ-a notoriously difficult parameter to measure-from any transit asymmetry resulting from gravity darkening induced by the stellar rotation, the correlations that exist between the transit parameters have led to large disagreements in published values of ψ for some systems. Aims. We aimed to study these phenomena in the light curves of the ultra-hot Jupiter MASCARA-1 b, which is characteristically similar to well-studied contemporaries such as KELT-9 b and WASP-33 b. Methods. We obtained optical CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) transit and occultation light curves of MASCARA-1 b, and analysed them jointly with a Spitzer/IRAC 4.5 μm full-phase curve to model the asymmetric transits, occultations, and phase-dependent flux modulation. For the latter, we employed a novel physics-driven approach to jointly fit the phase modulation by generating a single 2D temperature map and integrating it over the two bandpasses as a function of phase to account for the differing planet-star flux contrasts. The reflected light component was modelled using the general ab initio solution for a semi-infinite atmosphere. Results. When fitting the CHEOPS and Spitzer transits together, the degeneracies are greatly diminished and return results consistent with previously published Doppler tomography. Placing priors informed by the tomography achieves even better precision, allowing a determination of ψ = 72.1-2.4+2.5 deg. From the occultations and phase variations, we derived dayside and nightside temperatures of 3062-68+66 K and 1720 ± 330 K, respectively. Our retrieval suggests that the dayside emission spectrum closely follows that of a blackbody. As the CHEOPS occultation is too deep to be attributed to blackbody flux alone, we could separately derive geometric albedo Ag = 0.171-0.068+0.066 and spherical albedo As = 0.266-0.100+0.097 from the CHEOPS data, and Bond albedoAB = 0.057-0.101+0.083 from the Spitzer phase curve.Although small, the Ag and As indicate that MASCARA-1 b is more reflective than most other ultra-hot Jupiters, where H- absorption is expected to dominate. Conclusions. Where possible, priors informed by Doppler tomography should be used when fitting transits of fast-rotating stars, though multi-colour photometry may also unlock an accurate measurement of ψ. Our approach to modelling the phase variations at different wavelengths provides a template for how to separate thermal emission from reflected light in spectrally resolved James Webb Space Telescope phase curve data.

  • The changing face of AU Mic b: Stellar spots, spin-orbit commensurability, and transit timing variations as seen by CHEOPS and TESS
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AU Mic is a young planetary system with a resolved debris disc showing signs of planet formation and two transiting warm Neptunes near mean-motion resonances. Here we analyse three transits of AU Mic b observed with the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS), supplemented with sector 1 and 27 Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry, and the All-Sky Automated Survey from the ground. The refined orbital period of AU Mic b is 8.462995 ± 0.000003 d, whereas the stellar rotational period is Prot = 4.8367 ± 0.0006 d. The two periods indicate a 7:4 spin-orbit commensurability at a precision of 0.1%. Therefore, all transits are observed in front of one of the four possible stellar central longitudes. This is strongly supported by the observation that the same complex star-spot pattern is seen in the second and third CHEOPS visits that were separated by four orbits (and seven stellar rotations). Using a bootstrap analysis we find that flares and star spots reduce the accuracy of transit parameters by up to 10% in the planet-to-star radius ratio and the accuracy on transit time by 3-4 min. Nevertheless, occulted stellar spot features independently confirm the presence of transit timing variations (TTVs) with an amplitude of at least 4 min. We find that the outer companion, AU Mic c, may cause the observed TTVs.

  • Ingår i: Nature Nanotechnology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1748-3387 .- 1748-3395. ; 16:9, s. 970-974
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanostructured dielectric metasurfaces offer unprecedented opportunities to manipulate light by imprinting an arbitrary phase gradient on an impinging wavefront(1). This has resulted in the realization of a range of flat analogues to classical optical components, such as lenses, waveplates and axicons(2-6). However, the change in linear and angular optical momentum(7) associated with phase manipulation also results in previously unexploited forces and torques that act on the metasurface itself. Here we show that these optomechanical effects can be utilized to construct optical metavehicles-microscopic particles that can travel long distances under low-intensity plane-wave illumination while being steered by the polarization of the incident light. We demonstrate movement in complex patterns, self-correcting motion and an application as transport vehicles for microscopic cargoes, which include unicellular organisms. The abundance of possible optical metasurfaces attests to the prospect of developing a wide variety of metavehicles with specialized functional behaviours.

    • A nanoelectromechanical weak link composed of a carbon nanotube suspended between two normal electrodes in a gap between two superconducting leads is considered. The nanotube is treated as a movable single level quantum dot in which the position-dependent superconducting order parameter is induced due to the Cooper pair tunneling. We show that electron tunneling processes significantly affect the state of the mechanical subsystem. We found that at a given direction of the applied voltage between the electrodes, the stationary state of the mechanical subsystem has a Boltzmann form with an effective temperature dependent on the parameters of the device. As this takes place, the effective temperature can reach significantly small values (cooling effect). We also demonstrate that nanotube fluctuations strongly affect the dc current through the system. The latter can be used to probe the predicted effects in an experiment. Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.

  • Critical slowing down in circuit quantum electrodynamics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 7:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Critical slowing down of the time it takes a system to reach equilibrium is a key signature of bistability in dissipative first-order phase transitions. Understanding and characterizing this process can shed light on the underlying many-body dynamics that occur close to such a transition. Here, we explore the rich quantum activation dynamics and the appearance of critical slowing down in an engineered superconducting quantum circuit. Specifically, we investigate the intermediate bistable regime of the generalized Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian (GJC), realized by a circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) system consisting of a transmon qubit coupled to a microwave cavity. We find a previously unidentified regime of quantum activation in which the critical slowing down reaches saturation and, by comparing our experimental results with a range of models, we shed light on the fundamental role played by the qubit in this regime.

  • Plasmons in holographic graphene
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: SciPost Physics. - : SCIPOST FOUNDATION. - 2542-4653. ; 8:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate how self-sourced collective modes - of which the plasmon is a prominent example due to its relevance in modern technological applications - are identified in strongly correlated systems described by holographic Maxwell theories. The characteristic ω ∝ pk plasmon dispersion for 2D materials, such as graphene, naturally emerges from this formalism. We also demonstrate this by constructing the first holographic model containing this feature. This provides new insight into modeling such systems from a holographic point of view, bottom-up and top-down alike. Beyond that, this method provides a general framework to compute the dynamical charge response of strange metals, which has recently become experimentally accessible due to the novel technique of momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (M-EELS). This framework therefore opens up the exciting possibility of testing holographic models for strange metals against actual experimental data.

  • Phase crystals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - 2643-1564. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superconductivity owes its properties to the phase of the electron pair condensate that breaks the U(1) symmetry. In the most traditional ground state, the phase is uniform and rigid. The normal state can be unstable towards special inhomogeneous superconducting states: the Abrikosov vortex state and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state. Here we show that the phase-uniform superconducting state can go into a fundamentally different and more ordered nonuniform ground state, which we refer to as a phase crystal. This state breaks translational invariance through formation of a spatially periodic modulation of the phase, manifested by unusual superflow patterns and circulating currents, that also break time-reversal symmetry. We list the general conditions needed for realization of phase crystals. Using microscopic theory, we then derive an analytic expression for the superfluid density tensor for the case of a nonuniform environment in a semi-infinite superconductor. We demonstrate how the surface quasiparticle states enter the superfluid density and identify phase crystallization as the main player in several previous numerical observations in unconventional superconductors, and predict the existence of a similar phenomenon in superconductor-ferromagnetic structures. This analytic approach provides a unifying aspect for the exploration of boundary-induced quasiparticles and collective excitations in superconductors. More generally, we trace the origin of phase crystallization to nonlocal properties of the gradient energy, which implies the existence of similar pattern-forming instabilities in many other contexts.

    • © 2021 authors. Controlling the directionality of spin waves is a key ingredient in wave-based computing methods such as magnonics. In this Letter, we demonstrate this particular aspect by using an all-optical pointlike source of continuous spin waves based on frequency comb rapid demagnetization. The emitted spin waves contain a range of k vectors and by detuning the applied magnetic field slightly off the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), we observe X-shaped caustic spin wave patterns at 70° propagation angles as predicted by theory. When the harmonic of the light source approaches the FMR, the caustic pattern gives way to uniaxial spin wave propagation perpendicular to the in-plane component of the applied field. This field-controlled propagation pattern and directionality of optically emitted short-wavelength spin waves provide additional degrees of freedom when designing magnonic devices.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a nanoelectromechanical system composed of a carbon nanotube suspended between two normal leads and coupled to a superconducting scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip via vacuum tunnel barrier. Treating the nanotube as a single-level quantum dot, it is shown that an applied voltage between the superconducting STM tip and normal leads gives rise to a pumping or a cooling of the mechanical subsystem depending on the direction of the electronic flow. It is also demonstrated that the transition between these two regimes is controlled by the strength of the tunnel coupling between the nanotube and superconducting STM tip and the relative position of the electronic level. Such phenomena are realized due to a specific electromechanical coupling that is fully governed by the quantum dynamics of the Cooper pairs. The amplitude of the self-sustained oscillations in the pumping regime is analyzed numerically, and the effective temperature of the mechanical subsystem in the cooling regime is obtained.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 130:4

    • When light scatters off a sphere, it produces a rich Mie spectrum full of overlapping resonances. Single resonances can be explained with a quantum analogy and result in Fano profiles. However, the full spectrum is so complex that recognizable patterns have not been found, and is only understood by comparing to numerical simulations. Here we show the directional Mie spectrum of evaporating water droplets arranged in consecutive Fano Combs. We then fully explain it by expanding the quantum analogy. This turns the droplet into an "optical atom"with angular momentum, tunneling, and excited states.

  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photoionization of xenon atoms in the 70–100 eV range reveals several fascinating physical phenomena such as a giant resonance induced by the dynamic rearrangement of the electron cloud after photon absorption, an anomalous branching ratio between intermediate Xe+ states separated by the spin-orbit interaction and multiple Auger decay processes. These phenomena have been studied in the past, using in particular synchrotron radiation, but without access to real-time dynamics. Here, we study the dynamics of Xe 4d photoionization on its natural time scale combining attosecond interferometry and coincidence spectroscopy. A time-frequency analysis of the involved transitions allows us to identify two interfering ionization mechanisms: the broad giant dipole resonance with a fast decay time less than 50 as, and a narrow resonance at threshold induced by spin-flip transitions, with much longer decay times of several hundred as. Our results provide insight into the complex electron-spin dynamics of photo-induced phenomena.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We revisit the formulation of non-relativistic (NR) string theory and its target space geometry. We obtain a new formulation in which the geometry contains a two-form field that couples to the tension current and that transforms under string Galilei boosts. This parallels the Newton-Cartan one-form that couples to the mass current of a non-relativistic point particle. We show how this formulation of the NR string arises both from an infinite speed of light limit and a null reduction of the relativistic closed bosonic string. In both cases, the two-form originates from a combination of metric quantities and the Kalb-Ramond field. The target space geometry of the NR string is seen to arise from the gauging of a new algebra that is obtained by an Inonu-Wigner contraction of the Poincare algebra extended by the symmetries of the Kalb-Ramond field. In this new formulation, there are no superfluous target space fields that can be removed by fixing a Stuckelberg symmetry. Classically, there are no foliation/torsion constraints imposed on the target space geometry.

    • In this paper, we describe the potential of the LHCb experiment to detect stealth physics. This refers to dynamics beyond the standard model that would elude searches that focus on energetic objects or precision measurements of known processes. Stealth signatures include long-lived particles and light resonances that are produced very rarely or together with overwhelming backgrounds. We will discuss why LHCb is equipped to discover this kind of physics at the Large Hadron Collider and provide examples of well-motivated theoretical models that can be probed with great detail at the experiment.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate asymptotic symmetries in flat backgrounds of dimension higher than or equal to four. For spin two we provide the counterpart of the extended BMS transformations found by Campiglia and Laddha in four-dimensional Minkowski space. We then identify higher-spin supertranslations and generalised superrotations in any dimension. These symmetries are in one-to-one correspondence with spin-s partially-massless representations on the celestial sphere, with supertranslations corresponding in particular to the representations with maximal depth. We discuss the definition of the corresponding asymptotic charges and we exploit the supertranslational ones in order to prove the link with Weinberg's soft theorem in even dimensions.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the low-energy effective action of string theories, non-abelian gauge interactions and supergravity are augmented by infinite towers of higher-mass-dimension operators. We propose a new method to construct one-loop matrix elements with insertions of operators D2k Fn and D2k Rn in the tree-level effective action of type-I and type-II superstrings. Inspired by ambitwistor string theories, our method is based on forward limits of moduli-space integrals using string tree-level amplitudes with two extra points, expanded in powers of the inverse string tension α′. Similar to one-loop ambitwistor computations, intermediate steps feature non-standard linearized Feynman propagators which eventually recombine to conventional quadratic propagators. With linearized propagators the loop integrand of the matrix elements obey one-loop versions of the monodromy and KLT relations. We express a variety of four- and five-point examples in terms of quadratic propagators and formulate a criterion on the underlying genus-one correlation functions that should make this recombination possible at all orders in α′. The ultraviolet divergences of the one-loop matrix elements are crosschecked against the non-separating degeneration of genus-one integrals in string amplitudes. Conversely, our results can be used as a constructive method to determine degenerations of elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph forms at arbitrary weight.

  • A random walk in reactor physics and neutron transport
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: J. Reactor Phys. Section of AESJ. ; 72:3, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The title of this paper alludes to two different meanings of “random”. First, the phrase “Random walk” refers to the fact that I selected, at random, a few topics which I myself found fascinating, surprising, and hence hopefully entertaining, in the hope that the reader will also find them entertaining. The phenomena that will be described and discussed here will reveal some unexpected features, which in some cases are puzzling or even counter-intuitive, and their explanation sometimes discloses commonly accepted misbeliefs or misunderstandings. I always found such cases very intriguing. Inevitably, such subjects do not constitute a continuous story, rather they are picked randomly, hence the first meaning of the phrase “random walk” in the title. Curiosities similar to the types that will be discussed in this note are usually published as a “Letter to the Editor” or a “Technical Note”, since they do not contain new research results. A few examples are given in Ref [1] (meaning of the flux) and Refs [2] - [4] (number of collisions until slowing down). The readers are encouraged to check up these letters or technical notes. Many are, in contrast to the present article, quite short, often only one page, hence the “output/input ratio” in intellectual entertainment is quite high. I can also recommend the readers to watch out for such short notes by themselves (although, sadly, the number of such notes seems to be decreasing). The second reason why the word “random” appears in the title is because the curious facts and phenomena which will be discussed here concern the randomness of neutron transport, manifesting itself in the fact that the number of neutrons in the system, or the number of detector counts during a time period, is a random number or random process (hence often referred to as neutron fluctuations or neutron noise). Random processes in general, whether about neutrons or other processes, have themselves fascinating and surprising properties. The subjects discussed in this small essay will hopefully also expedite a wider understanding of the properties and use of neutron fluctuations in nuclear systems. With this introduction, I invite the reader to follow me on the random walk in the fascinating world of random particle transport.

    • The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

  • Linear response theory : from black hole thermalization to Weyl semimetals
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Linear response theory is an incredibly powerful calculation tool. We apply this framework in quantum field theory to a variety of models originated from distinct areas in theoretical physics and for different reasons. In the context of black hole holography, we consider a quench model where we investigate effective thermalization as well as the boundary signal of the so called evanescent modes which indicate the presence of a black hole like object in the bulk. The problem of quantum thermalization plays a central role within the holographic duality between thermal states in the boundary field theory and black hole like objects in the bulk. However, quantum thermalization is also an interesting question in itself from a fundamental point of view and with that motivation we continue to explore this phenomenon further. Inspired by recent progress in understanding how operators in quantum field theories thermalize, which occurs even when considering integrable models, we investigate the so called operator thermalization hypothesis. We focus on gauge theories at finite temperature with a large number of fields which present a phase transition between the low-temperature and high-temperature regimes. In particular, these theories are the so called vector model and the adjoint matrix model. Last, within the common background of linear response theory we investigate transport properties in a family of Weyl semimetal systems. Concretely, we develop a general analytic method to compute the magneto-optical conductivity of these systems in the presence of an external magnetic field aligned with the tilt of the spectrum.

  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 520:2, s. 2417-2435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AT 2019avd is a nuclear transient detected from infrared to soft X-rays, though its nature is yet unclear. The source has shown two consecutive flaring episodes in the optical and the infrared bands, and its second flare was covered by X-ray monitoring programs. During this flare, the UVOT/Swift photometries revealed two plateaus: one observed after the peak and the other one appeared similar to 240 d later. Meanwhile, our NICER and XRT/Swift campaigns show two declines in the X-ray emission, one during the first optical plateau and one 70-90 d after the optical/UV decline. The evidence suggests that the optical/UV could not have been primarily originated from X-ray reprocessing. Furthermore, we detected a timelag of similar to 16-34 d between the optical and UV emission, which indicates the optical likely comes from UV reprocessing by a gas at a distance of 0.01-0.03 pc. We also report the first VLA and VLBA detection of this source at different frequencies and different stages of the second flare. The information obtained in the radio band - namely a steep and a late-time inverted radio spectrum, a high brightness temperature and a radio-loud state at late times - together with the multiwavelength properties of AT 2019avd suggests the launching and evolution of outflows such as disc winds or jets. In conclusion, we propose that after the ignition of black hole activity in the first flare, a super-Eddington flaring accretion disc formed and settled to a sub-Eddington state by the end of the second flare, associated with a compact radio outflow.

Here, we explore the influence of optical anisotropy on the magneto-optical activity in nonmagnetic hyperbolic nanoparticles. We demonstrate that the magneto-optical response is driven by the hyperbolic dispersion via the coupling of metallic-induced electric and dielectric-induced magnetic dipolar optical modes with static magnetic fields. Magnetic circular dichroism experiments confirm the theoretical predictions and reveal tunable magneto-optical activity across the visible and near infrared spectral range.

    • The current and upcoming generation of Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes - collecting unprecedented quantities of neutrino events - can be used to explore subtle effects in oscillation physics, such as (but not restricted to) the neutrino mass ordering. The sensitivity of an experiment to these effects can be estimated from Monte Carlo simulations. With the high number of events that will be collected, there is a trade-off between the computational expense of running such simulations and the inherent statistical uncertainty in the determined values. In such a scenario, it becomes impractical to produce and use adequately-sized sets of simulated events with traditional methods, such as Monte Carlo weighting. In this work we present a staged approach to the generation of expected distributions of observables in order to overcome these challenges. By combining multiple integration and smoothing techniques which address limited statistics from simulation it arrives at reliable analysis results using modest computational resources.

    • The direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter particles is hampered by their low energy deposits. If the maximum deposit allowed by kinematics falls below the energy threshold of a direct detection experiment, it is unable to detect these light particles. Mechanisms that boost particles from the Galactic halo can therefore extend the sensitivity of terrestrial direct dark matter searches to lower masses. Sub-GeV and sub-MeV dark matter particles can be efficiently accelerated by colliding with thermal nuclei and electrons of the solar plasma, respectively. This process is called "solar reflection."In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of solar reflection via electron and/or nuclear scatterings using Monte Carlo simulations of dark matter trajectories through the Sun. We study the properties of the boosted dark matter particles, obtain exclusion limits based on various experiments probing both electron and nuclear recoils, and derive projections for future detectors. In addition, we find and quantify a novel, distinct annual modulation signature of a potential solar reflection signal which critically depends on the anisotropies of the boosted dark matter flux ejected from the Sun. Along with this paper, we also publish the corresponding research software.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton halo effects in the 8B+64Zn reaction at an energy around 1.5 times the Coulomb barrier have been studied at HIE-ISOLDE CERN using, for the first time, the only existing postaccelerated 8B beam. This, together with the use of a high granularity and large solid angle detection system, allowed for a careful mapping of the elastic angular distribution, especially in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. Contrary to what is observed for the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on the same target in a similar energy range, the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution shows only a modest suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak, with no remarkable enhancement of the total reaction cross-section. Inclusive angular and energy distributions of 7Be produced in direct reaction processes have also been measured. The comparison of these data with the results of theoretical calculations for the elastic and non-elastic breakup contributions indicate that both processes are important. Overall, the experimental data suggest a 8B collision dynamics at the barrier very different from the one of neutron halo nuclei, showing only modest effects of coupling to continuum. This behaviour can be interpreted as due to the presence of the additional Coulomb interactions halo-core and halo-target together with the presence of the centrifugal barrier felt by the valence proton of 8B.

    • The angular distributions of electrons ejected in laser photodetachment of the P- ion have been studied in the photon energy range of 0.95-3.28 eV using a photoelectron spectrometer designed to accommodate a source consisting of collinearly overlapping photon and negative ion beams. We observe the value of the asymmetry parameter beta starting at zero near the threshold, falling to almost -1 about 0.5 eV above the threshold and eventually rising to a positive value. The experimental data has been fitted to a simplified model of the Cooper-Zare formula which yields a qualitative understanding of the quantum interference between the outgoing s and d waves representing the free electron. The present results are also compared with previous results for other elements involving p-electron photodetachment.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop a formalism to describe the scattering of dark matter (DM) particles by electrons bound in crystals for a general form of the underlying DM-electron interaction. Such a description is relevant for direct-detection experiments of DM particles lighter than a nucleon, which might be observed in operating DM experiments via electron excitations in semiconductor crystal detectors. Our formalism is based on an effective theory approach to general nonrelativistic DM-electron interactions, including the anapole, and magnetic and electric dipole couplings, combined with crystal response functions defined in terms of electron wave function overlap integrals. Our main finding is that, for the usual simplification of the velocity integral, the rate of DM-induced electronic transitions in a semiconductor material depends on at most five independent crystal response functions four of which are distinct from the usual scalar response. We identify these crystal responses and evaluate them using density functional theory for crystalline silicon and germanium, which are used in operating DMdirect-detection experiments. Our calculations allow us to set 90% confidence level limits on the strength of DM-electron interactions from data reported by the SENSEI and EDELWEISS experiments. The crystal response functions discovered in this paper encode properties of crystalline solids that do not interact with conventional experimental probes, suggesting the use of the DM wind as a probe to reveal new kinds of hidden order in materials.

    • Radiation reaction (RR) terms at the third post-Minkowskian (3PM) order have recently been found to be instrumental in restoring smooth continuity between the non-relativistic, relativistic, and ultra-relativistic (including the massless) regimes. Here we propose a new and intriguing connection between RR and soft (bremsstrahlung) theorems which short-circuits the more involved conventional loop computations. Although first noticed in the context of the maximally supersymmetric theory, unitarity and analyticity arguments support the general validity of this 3PM-order connection that we apply, in particular, to Einstein's gravity and to its Jordan-Brans-Dicke extension. In the former case we find full agreement with a recent result by Damour obtained through a very different reasoning.

    • Obtaining both high open-circuit voltage (V-oc) and short-circuit current density (J(sc)) has been a major challenge for efficient all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Herein, we developed a polymer acceptor PF5-Y5 with excellent optical absorption capability (onset extending to similar to 880 nm and maximum absorption coefficient exceeding 105 cm(-1) in a film), high electron mobility (3.18 x 10(3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) and high LUMO level (-3.84 eV) to address such a challenge. As a result, the PBDB-T:PF5-Y5-based all-PSCs achieved a high power conversion efficiency of up to 14.45% with both a high Voc (0.946 V) and a high Jsc (20.65 mA cm(-2)), due to the high and broad absorption coverage, small energy loss (0.57 eV) and efficient charge separation and transport in the device, which are among the best values in the all-PSC field. In addition, the all-PSC shows a similar to 15% improvement in PCE compared to its counterpart small molecule acceptor (Y5)-based device. Our results suggest that PF5-Y5 is a very promising polymer acceptor candidate for applications in efficient all-PSCs.

    • Metal-organic frameworks are porous materials composed of metal ions or clusters coordinated by organic molecules. As a response to applied uniaxial pressure, molecules with a straight shape in the framework start to buckle. At sufficiently low temperatures, this buckling has a quantum nature described by a superposition of degenerate buckling states. Buckling states of adjacent molecules couple in a transverse field Ising type behavior. Based on the example of the metal organic framework topology MOF-5, we derived the phase diagram under applied strain, showing a normal phase, a parabuckling phase, and a ferrobuckling phase. At zero temperature, quantum phase transitions between the three phases can be induced by strain. This novel type of order opens a new path toward strain induced quantum phases.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Particle-antiparticle pairs can be produced by background electric fields via the Schwinger mechanism provided they are unconfined. If, as in QED in (3+1)-d these particles are massive, the particle production rate is exponentially suppressed below a threshold field strength. Above this threshold, the energy for pair creation must come from the electric field itself which ought to eventually relax to the threshold strength. Calculating this relaxation in a self-consistent manner, however, is difficult. Chu and Vachaspati addressed this problem in the context of capacitor discharge in massless QED(2) [1] by utilizing bosonization in two-dimensions. When the bare fermions are massless, the dual bosonized theory is free and capacitor discharge can be analyzed exactly [1], however, special care is required in its interpretation given that the theory exhibits confinement. In this paper we reinterpret the findings of [1], where the capacitors Schwinger-discharge via electrically neutral dipolar meson-production, and generalize this to the case where the fermions have bare masses. Crucially, we note that when the initial charge of the capacitor is large compared to the charge of the fermions, Q >> e, the classical equation of motion for the bosonized model accurately characterizes the dynamics of discharge. For massless QED(2), we find that the discharge is suppressed below a critical plate separation that is commensurate with the length scale associated with the meson dipole moment. For massive QED(2), we find in addition, a mass threshold familiar from (3+1)-d, and show the electric field relaxes to a final steady state with a magnitude proportional to the initial charge. We discuss the wider implications of our findings and identify challenges in extending this treatment to higher dimensions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using micromagnetic simulations, we study the interplay between strongly voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), Δ K = ±200 kJ/m3, and gate width, w = 10-400 nm, in voltage-gated W/CoFeB/MgO based nano-constriction spin Hall nano-oscillators. The VCMA modifies the local magnetic properties such that the magnetodynamics transitions between regimes of (i) confinement, (ii) tuning, and (iii) separation with qualitatively different behaviors. We find that the strongest tuning is achieved for gate widths of the same size as the constriction width, for which the effective damping can be increased an order of magnitude compared to its intrinsic value. As a consequence, voltage control remains efficient over a very large frequency range, and subsequent manufacturing advances could allow spin Hall nano-oscillators to be easily integrated into next-generation electronics for further fundamental studies and industrial applications.

    • Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in two-dimensional (2D) materials has emerged as a powerful tool for designing spintronic devices. On the one hand, the interest in this respect for graphene, the most popular 2D material with numerous fascinating and exciting properties, is fading due to the absence of SOC. On the other hand, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are known to exhibit rich physics including large SOC. TMDs have been used for decades in a variety of applications such as nano-electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, sensing, and recently also in spintronics. Here, we review the current progress in research on 2D TMDs for generating spin-orbit torques in spin-logic devices. Several challenges connecting to thin film growth, film thickness, layer symmetry, and transport properties and their impact on the efficiency of spintronic devices are reviewed. How different TMDs generate spin-orbit torques in magnetic heterostructures is discussed in detail. Relevant aspects for improving the quality of the thin film growth as well as the efficiency of the generated spin-orbit torques are discussed together with future perspectives in the field of spin-orbitronics.

    • Albeit a very recent development, Mxenes have offered numerous potential avenues for researchers from physics, chemistry and materials science. Here in, we have explored S-terminated M2N (M = Ti, V) MXenes, which are one of the lightest and thinnest members of the MXene family, for gas sensing applications. We performed spin-polarized DFT calculations with vdW correction to investigate the sensing propensity of several gases such as CH4, CO, CO2, NH3, NO, NO2, H2S, and SO2 on M2NS2 sheets. The adsorption kinetics, charge transfer, electronic density of states (DOS) and electronic transport behaviors are investigated in relation to M2NS2 Mxene based nanoscale gas sensor. Among all the gases under consideration, NO, and NO2 exhibit superior sensitivity towards 2D nitride MXenes. Charge transfer analysis reveals that the considerable quantity of charge is transferred from NO, and NO2 gas molecules to Ti2NS2 and V2NS2 MXene sheets, respectively. Spin-polarized DOS reveals that pristine non-magnetic nitride Mxenes transform to magnetic systems upon NO and NO2 adsorption. By computing the electronic transport properties in the form of I–V characteristics for adsorbed gases on M2NS2 and comparing it against the pristine Mxene sheets, distinct changes in I–V relationships can be identified which further substantiate the promising role of Mxenes for gas sensing applications.

    • Nanophotonic chiral antennas exhibit orders of magnitude higher circular dichroism (CD) compared to molecular systems. When the structural chirality is merged with magnetism at the nanoscale, efficient magnetic control over the dichroic response is achieved, bringing exciting prospects to active nanophotonic devices. Here, we devise macroscopic enantiomeric magnetophotonic metasurfaces of plasmonic-ferromagnetic spiral antennas assembled on large areas via hole-mask colloidal lithography. The simultaneous presence of 3D- and 2D-features in chiral nanoantennas induces large CD response, where we identify reciprocal and non-reciprocal contributions, respectively. Exploring further this type of magnetophotonic metasurfaces might allow the realization of high-sensitivity chiral sensors and prompts the design of advanced macroscopic optical devices operating with polarized light.

    • We perform fully kinetic simulations of flows known to produce dynamo in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), considering scenarios with low Reynolds number and high magnetic Prandtl number, relevant for galaxy cluster scale fluctuation dynamos. We find that Landau damping on the electrons leads to a rapid decay of magnetic perturbations, impeding the dynamo. This collisionless damping process operates on spatial scales where electrons are nonmagnetized, reducing the range of scales where the magnetic field grows in high magnetic Prandtl number fluctuation dynamos. When electrons are not magnetized down to the resistive scale, the magnetic energy spectrum is expected to be limited by the scale corresponding to magnetic Landau damping or, if smaller, the electron gyroradius scale, instead of the resistive scale. In simulations we thus observe decaying magnetic fields where resistive MHD would predict a dynamo.

We demonstrate that a bias voltage applied to the superconductors may generate states represented by entanglement between qubit states and quantum 'cat states', i.e. a superposition of the coherent states of the nanomechanical oscillator. We characterize the formation and development of such states in terms of the corresponding Wigner function and entropy of entanglement. Also, we propose an experimentally feasible detection scheme for the effect, in which the average current that attains the specific features created by the entanglement is measured.

  • Active Matter in a Critical State: From passive building blocks to active molecules, engines, and active droplets
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The motion of microscopic objects is strongly affected by their surrounding environment. In quiescent liquids, motion is reduced to random fluctuations known as Brownian motion. Nevertheless, microorganisms have been able to develop mechanisms to generate active motion. This has inspired researchers to understand and artificially replicate active motion. Now, the field of active matter has developed into a multi-disciplinary field, with researchers developing artificial microswimmers, producing miniaturized versions of heat engines and showing that individual colloids self-assemble into larger microstructures. This thesis taps into the development of artificial microscopic and nanoscopic systems and demonstrates that passive building blocks such as colloids are transformed into active molecules, engines and active droplets that display a rich set of motions. This is achieved by combining optical manipulation with a phase-separating environment consisting of a critical binary mixture. I first show how simple absorbing particles are transformed into fast rotating microengines using optical tweezers, and how this principle can be scaled down to nanoscopic particles. Transitioning then from single particles to self-assembled modular swimmers, such colloidal molecules exhibit diverse behaviour such as propulsion, orbital rotation and spinning, and whose formation process I can control with periodic illumination. To characterize the molecules dynamics better, I introduce a machine-learning algorithm to determine the anomalous exponent of trajectories and to identify changes in a trajectory’s behaviour. Towards understanding the behaviour of larger microstructures, I then investigate the interaction of colloidal molecules with their phase-separating environment and observe a two-fold coupling between the induced liquid droplets and their immersed colloids. With the help of simulations I gain a better physical picture and can further analyse the molecules’ and droplets’ emergence and growth dynamics. At last, I show that fluctuation-induced forces can solve current limitations in microfabrication due to stiction, enabling a further development of the field towards smaller and more stable nanostructures required for nowadays adaptive functional materials. The insights gained from this research mark the path towards a new generation of design principles, e.g., for the construction of flexible micromotors, tunable micromembranes and drug delivery in health care applications.

    • The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z=6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed NA(p,2p)CA−1 quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 21+ state of 16,18,20C. The experimental findings support the notion of a moderate reduction of the proton 1p1/2−1p3/2 spin-orbit splitting, at variance to recent claims for a prevalent Z=6 magic number towards the neutron dripline.

  • Plasma Oscillations in Holographic Quantum Matter
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis we explore strongly correlated matter in the framework of holographic duality. Specifically, we examine the quasinormal modes of such systems, and we extend the current framework to efficiently and naturally cover plasmons and other collective modes that may be found within strongly correlated matter. The interest in strongly correlated matter is motivated by the presence of a “strange metal” phase both in high temperature superconductors and in near charge neutral graphene, both being materials of immense scientific interest. The strange metal phase is a phase characterized by the absence of quasi-particles. This implies that conventional methods, such as perturbation theory in quantum field theory and Monte Carlo methods fall short of being able to describe the dynamics. Perhaps surprisingly, string theory provides a novel method, capable of precisely describing such systems - the holographic duality. With the holographic duality, strongly coupled matter is mapped onto a weakly coupled gravity theory in one additional dimension, allowing for a conventional treatment of the dual system. In this thesis, we extend the existing framework to also describe polarizing media. This is explicitly done in the form of new boundary conditions on the holographic dual, which deviate from previous holographic studies, and we contrast the quasinormal modes previously studied with the emergent collective modes we find for some studied models. We find new results, as well as confirm the predictions of less general models in their respective regions of validity and pave the way for more complex future models.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The CHEOPS space mission dedicated to exoplanet follow-up was launched in December 2019, equipped with the capacity to perform photometric measurements at the 20 ppm level. As CHEOPS carries out its observations in a broad optical passband, it can provide insights into the reflected light from exoplanets and constrain the short-wavelength thermal emission for the hottest of planets by observing occultations and phase curves. Here, we report the first CHEOPS observation of an occultation, namely, that of the hot Jupiter WASP-189 b, a MP ≈ 2MJ planet orbiting an A-type star. We detected the occultation of WASP-189 b at high significance in individual measurements and derived an occultation depth of dF = 87.9 ± 4.3 ppm based on four occultations. We compared these measurements to model predictions and we find that they are consistent with an unreflective atmosphere heated to a temperature of 3435 ± 27 K, when assuming inefficient heat redistribution. Furthermore, we present two transits of WASP-189 b observed by CHEOPS. These transits have an asymmetric shape that we attribute to gravity darkening of the host star caused by its high rotation rate. We used these measurements to refine the planetary parameters, finding a ~25% deeper transit compared to the discovery paper and updating the radius of WASP-189 b to 1.619 ± 0.021RJ. We further measured the projected orbital obliquity to be λ = 86.4-4.4+2.9°, a value that is in good agreement with a previous measurement from spectroscopic observations, and derived a true obliquity of ψ = 85.4 ± 4.3°. Finally, we provide reference values for the photometric precision attained by the CHEOPS satellite: for the V = 6.6 mag star, and using a 1-h binning, we obtain a residual RMS between 10 and 17 ppm on the individual light curves, and 5.7 ppm when combining the four visits.

  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 653
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. 55 Cnc e is a transiting super-Earth (radius 1.88 R-circle plus and mass 8 M-circle plus) orbiting a G8V host star on a 17-h orbit. Spitzer observations of the planet's phase curve at 4.5 mu m revealed a time-varying occultation depth, and MOST optical observations are consistent with a time-varying phase curve amplitude and phase offset of maximum light. Both broadband and high-resolution spectroscopic analyses are consistent with either a high mean molecular weight atmosphere or no atmosphere for planet e. A long-term photometric monitoring campaign on an independent optical telescope is needed to probe the variability in this system. Aims. We seek to measure the phase variations of 55 Cnc e with a broadband optical filter with the 30 cm effective aperture space telescope CHEOPS and explore how the precision photometry narrows down the range of possible scenarios. Methods. We observed 55 Cnc for 1.6 orbital phases in March of 2020. We designed a phase curve detrending toolkit for CHEOPS photometry which allowed us to study the underlying flux variations in the 55 Cnc system. Results. We detected a phase variation with a full-amplitude of 72 +/- 7 ppm, but did not detect a significant secondary eclipse of the planet. The shape of the phase variation resembles that of a piecewise-Lambertian; however, the non-detection of the planetary secondary eclipse, and the large amplitude of the variations exclude reflection from the planetary surface as a possible origin of the observed phase variations. They are also likely incompatible with magnetospheric interactions between the star and planet, but may imply that circumplanetary or circumstellar material modulate the flux of the system. Conclusions. This year, further precision photometry of 55 Cnc from CHEOPS will measure variations in the phase curve amplitude and shape over time.

    • Sources of intense, ultrashort electromagnetic pulses enable applications such as attosecond pulse generation, control of electron motion in solids, and the observation of reaction dynamics at the electronic level. For such applications, both high intensity and carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) tunability are beneficial, yet hard to obtain with current methods. In this Letter, we present a new scheme for generation of isolated CEP tunable intense subcycle pulses with central frequencies that range from the midinfrared to the ultraviolet. It utilizes an intense laser pulse that drives a wake in a plasma, copropagating with a long-wavelength seed pulse. The moving electron density spike of the wake amplifies the seed and forms a subcycle pulse. Controlling the CEP of the seed pulse or the delay between driver and seed leads to CEP tunability, while frequency tunability can be achieved by adjusting the laser and plasma parameters. Our 2D and 3D particle-in-cell simulations predict laser-to-subcycle-pulse conversion efficiencies up to 1%, resulting in relativistically intense subcycle pulses.

    • Intense sub-cycle electromagnetic pulses allow one to drive nonlinear processes in matter with unprecedented levels of control. However, it remains challenging to scale such sources in the relativistic regime. Recently, a scheme that utilizes laser-driven wakes in plasmas to amplify and compress seed laser pulses to produce tunable, carrier-envelope-phase stable, relativistic sub-cycle pulses has been proposed. Here, we present parametric studies of this process using particle-in-cell simulations, showing its robustness over a wide range of experimentally accessible laser-plasma interaction parameters, spanning more than two orders of magnitude of background plasma density. The method is shown to work with different gas-jet profiles, including structured density profiles and is robust over a relatively wide range of driver laser intensities. Our study shows that sub-cycle pulses of up to 10mJ of energy can be produced.

    • Three-dimensional growth of nanostructures can be used to reduce the threading dislocation density that degrades III-nitride laser performance. Here, nanowire-based hexagonal GaN microprisms with flat top and bottom c-facets are embedded between two dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors to create dislocation-free vertical optical cavities. The cavities are electron beam pumped, and the quality (Q) factor is deduced from the cavity-filtered yellow luminescence. The Q factor is similar to 500 for a 1000nm wide prism cavity and only similar to 60 for a 600nm wide cavity, showing the strong decrease in Q factor when diffraction losses become dominant. Measured Q factors are in good agreement with those obtained from quasi-3D finite element frequency-domain method and 3D beam propagation method simulations. Simulations further predict that a prism cavity with a 1000nm width will have a Q factor of around 2000 in the blue spectral regime, which would be the target regime for real devices. These results demonstrate the potential of GaN prisms as a scalable platform for realizing small footprint lasers with low threshold currents.

  • Resonant enhancement of grazing incidence neutron scattering for the characterization of thin films
  • 2021

    • We use signal enhancement in a quantum resonator for the characterization of a thin layer of vanadium hydride using neutron reflectometry and demonstrate that pressure-concentration isotherms and expansion coefficients can be extracted from the measurement of totally externally reflected neutrons only. Moreover, a consistent data analysis of the attenuation cross section allows us to detect and quantify off-specular and small angle scattering. As our experiments are effective direct beam measurements, combined with resonant signal enhancement, counting times become considerably reduced. This allows us to overcome the challenges resulting from the comparatively low brilliance of neutron beams for grazing incidence scattering experiments. Further, we discuss the potential of resonant enhancement to increase any scattering, which is of particular interest for grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering and spectroscopy.

  • Off-shell color-kinematics duality for Chern-Simons
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many gauge theories possess a hidden duality between color and kinematics in their on-shell scattering amplitudes. An open problem is to formulate an off-shell realization of the duality, thus manifesting a kinematic algebra. We show that 3D Chern-Simons (CS) theory in Lorenz gauge obeys off-shell color-kinematics duality. This holds both for the gauge field and the BRST ghosts, and the duality is manifest in the Feynman rules. A kinematic algebra can be formulated through a second-order differential operator (Poisson bracket) acting on the off-shell fields, and it corresponds to 3D volume-preserving diffeomorphisms, generated by functions in Lorenz gauge. We consider several admissible double-copy constructions of CS theory with Yang-Mills theory, a higher-derivative (DF)(2) gauge theory, or CS theory itself. To obtain non-vanishing amplitudes, we deform pure CS theory by including the maximum amount of adjoint matter that respects the on-shell duality. This gives a new formulation of an N = 4 CS-matter theory, with fields of unusual statistics. We argue that the color-stripped tree amplitudes of this theory are equivalent to those of the Gaiotto-Witten N = 4 CS theory with bi-fundamental matter. We further show that the double copy of the N = 4 CS theory with itself corresponds to maximally supersymmetric N = 8 Dirac-Born-Infeld theory.

  • Prospects for dark matter signal discovery and model selection via timing information in a low-threshold experiment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; 2022:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the recent years, many low-threshold dark matter (DM) direct detection experiments have reported the observation of unexplained excesses of events at low energies. Exemplary for these, the experiment CRESST has detected unidentified events below an energy of about 200 eV - a result hampering the detector performance in the search for GeV-scale DM. In this work, we test the impact of nuclear recoil timing information on the potential for DM signal discovery and model selection on a low-threshold experiment limited by the presence of an unidentified background resembling this population of low-energy events. Among the different targets explored by the CRESST collaboration, here we focus on Al2O3, as a sapphire detector was shown to reach an energy threshold as low as 19.7 eV [1]. We test the ability of a low-threshold experiment to discover a signal above a given background, or to reject the spin-independent interaction in favour of a magnetic dipole coupling in terms of p-values. We perform our p-value calculations: 1) taking timing information into account; and 2) assuming that the latter is not available. By comparing the two approaches, we find that under our assumptions timing information has a marginal impact on the potential for DM signal discovery, while provides more significant results for the selection between the two models considered. For the model parameters explored here, we find that the p-value for rejecting spin-independent interactions in favour of a magnetic dipole coupling is about 0.11 when the experimental exposure is 460 g×year and smaller (about 0.06) if timing information is available. The conclusion on the role of timing information remains qualitatively unchanged for exposures as large as 1 kg×5 year. At the same time, our results show that a 90% C.L. rejection of spin-independent interactions in favour of a magnetic dipole coupling is within reach of an upgrade of the CRESST experiment [2].

  • Evidence for a New Compact Symmetric Fission Mode in Light Thorium Isotopes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 124:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Taking benefit of the R3B/SOFIA setup to measure the mass and the nuclear charge of both fission fragments in coincidence with the total prompt-neutron multiplicity, the scission configurations are inferred along the thorium chain, from the asymmetric fission in the heavier isotopes to the symmetric fission in the neutron-deficient thorium. Against all expectations, the symmetric scission in the light thorium isotopes shows a compact configuration, which is in total contrast to what is known in the fission of the heavier thorium isotopes and heavier actinides. This new main symmetric scission mode is characterized by a significant drop in deformation energy of the fission fragments of about 19 MeV, compared to the well-known symmetric scission in the uranium-plutonium region.
