  • Coloniality and Decolonisation in the Nordic region
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book advances critical discussions about what coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization mean and imply in the Nordic region. It brings together analysis of complex realities from the perspectives of the Nordic peoples, a region that are often overlooked in current research, and explores the processes of decolonization that are taking place in this region. The book offers a variety of perspectives that engage with issues such as Islamic feminism and the progressive left; racialization and agency among Muslim youths; indigenizing distance language education for Sami; extractivism and resistance among the Sami; the Nordic international development endeavour through education; Swedish TV-reporting on Venezuela; creolizing subjectivities across Roma and non-Roma worlds and hierarchies; and the whitewashing and sanitization of decoloniality in the Nordic region. As such, this book extends much of the productive dialogue that has recently occurred internationally in decolonial thinking but also in the areas of critical race theory, whiteness studies, and postcolonial studies to concrete and critical problems in the Nordic region. This should make the book of considerable interest to scholars of history of ideas, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, international development studies, legal sociology and (intercultural) philosophy with an interest in coloniality and decolonial social change.

  • “Just Google Translate It!” ICT Use of Migrant IT professionals for Mitigating Workplace Integration Challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AMCIS (Americas Conference on Information Systems), Minneapolis, MI, August 10-14.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IT professionals represent a growing group of highly educated migrants in different countries, yet research on their workplace integration is scarce. Applying a combined theoretical framework of Hofstede's culture dimensions and functional theory of language approach, this paper addresses the research need in investigating how migrant IT professionals to Sweden integrate into the workplace and the role of ICTs in mitigating integration challenges. Fifteen (15) interviews with IT professionals from India and Pakistan were analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results uncover migrants experiencing language barriers and cultural differences, which impede developing relationships with colleagues and career opportunities. Our findings indicate that although ICTs, primarily machine translation applications, are indispensable for supporting communication between migrants and locals, collegial support is still essential for managing intercultural interactions, contributing to migrants’ feelings of connectedness at work and a sense of belonging. Workplace inclusion and suggestions for practitioners are discussed.

  • Contending Global Apartheid : Transversal Solidarities and Politics of Possibility
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contending Global Apartheid: Transversal Solidarities and Politics of Possibility spells out a plea for utopia in a crisis-ridden 21st century of unequal development, exclusionary citizenship, and forced migrations. The volume offers a collection of critical essays on human rights movements, sanctuary spaces, and the emplacement of antiracist conviviality in cities across North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Each intervention proceeds from the idea that cities may accommodate both a humanistic sensibility and a radical potential for social transformation. The figure of the 'migrant' is pivotal. It expounds the prospect of transversal solidarity to capture a plurality of commonalities and to abjure dichotomies between in-group and out-group, the national and the international, or society and institutions.

  • Police’s Strategic Use of Social Media – A Social Justice Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 42nd International Conference on Information Systems, Austin, Texas, USA.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The police turn to social media to disseminate information, enforce laws, or involve people in crime investigation. This paper’s goal is to explore the police’s use of Instagram based on a comparative study of Instagram accounts of official police in selected socially deprived and non-deprived neighborhoods from a social justice perspective. Using digital trace data and interpretive findings, we seek to develop new insights and theories in the light of social justice. Our work aims to contribute to literature on digital technologies and social justice and thus to building a more inclusive, sustainable society.

  • Business as Usual? : Doing gender equality in Swedish forestry work organisations
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The title of this thesis is Business as usual? Doing gender equality in Swedish forestry work organizations and while the latter part, the subtitle, is rather self-explanatory, the former part can be read in different ways. The aim of the thesis is to increase the understanding of the doing of gender equality in the male dominated work organizations of the Swedish forestry sector, and thereby contribute both theoretical and empirical understanding regarding how doing gender equality in the forestry sector relates both to notions of gender and notions of organizations. Forestry has traditionally been characterized by physically demanding, manual harvesting work, with practical and symbolic associations with men and certain forms of masculinity. The forestry sector still remains one of the most gender segregated labour forces in Sweden, all while gender equality has been addressed to some extent during the 2000s. The theoretical frame of reference of the present thesis is rooted in feminist organizational research and the doing gender framework. Based on a perspective of reality as socially constructed and by deploying a feminist participatory action research methodology, my analysis focuses on how complexities of meanings are ascribed to the actions and processes, that are framed as gender equality and I have qualitatively analysed empirical material, such as policy documents, interviews and written testimonies of sexual harassment, that explicate these aspects of doing gender equality in organizations. The thesis is built experiences from two different research- and development projects and consists of 5 articles and a synthetizing chapter. The results highlight how doing gender equality relates to notions of gender as well as notions of organization. In both Article I, where policies were studied and in Article II, that builds on interviews, women are in general constructed as the “other”, as people who lack (forestry) skills and competences and who are in need of help or as contributors of social and emotional competence. Men and masculine norms are mainly absent from the doing of gender equality in this material, just as notions of the organization. But, deploying a feminist participatory action research methodology can bring forward other perspectives on gender equality, as shown in Articles IV and V, such as the articulations of men and masculinities. Further, this thesis shows that gender equality is in general understood by the organizations studied as a process that regards gender, predominantly women, rather than the organization. Put differently, gender equality work in the forestry sector does not to any significant extent, affect what is perceived as the core activities in these organizations. However, the overarching depoliticized and degendered business case framing that mainly evades accounting for the role of the organization when doing gender equality, is disrupted by the testimonies of #slutavverkat explored in Article III. Here, the political dimension of gender equality is highlighted by stories of men’s behaviours (reprehended but at the same time sanctioned) in organizations that come at the expense of women’s rights to a workplace free from condescending comments, harassment and sexual violence. While previous research has pointed to the importance of gender awareness, and gender aware leadership, in organizations that wish to succeed with their gender equality work, this thesis suggests that there is also a need for “gendered organization awareness” in order to understand and discuss not only how gender is done in organizations but also how everyday organizational life, such as notions of competence, is done and how that in turn relates to gender and power. This underlines the need for organizations to make room for conflicts and politics and to let the otherwise marginalized voices contribute to more nuanced interpretations of gender equality. The title Business as usual? encompasses the starting points for the thesis work as well as the main findings. Read with an emphasis on business, the seemingly all-embracing business case rhetoric’s that encloses the official narratives of gender equality in the forestry sector are visualized, while emphasizing as usual denotes to the sectors resistance to do other than what it usually does. Read as the hole saying, business as usual, that title signals that gender equality work is done in ways that not interfere with forestry core activities, thus making gender equality work in the organizations side streamed or de-coupled. Yet, read with emphasis on the question mark, opens up for the subversive potential that nevertheless exists when more multifaceted ways of making sense of gender equality are articulated and as the findings suggests that there are ways to re-gender and re-politicize organizational gender equality work in the context of forestry work organizations.

  • Postfeminism as Coping Strategy : Understandings of Gender and Intragroup Conflict among Swedish Welfare Workers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Routledge. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 31:1, s. 76-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how workers in the women-dominated public sectorin Sweden speak about and make sense of gender and intragroup conflictand the consequences of this way of thinking and acting for genderequality at work. Using qualitative interviews with 26 first-level managersand employees, we introduce an analytical framework that employs criticaldiscourse psychology and the conceptualization of a postfeministsensibility at work. We identified three competing meanings (postfeministstorylines) of gender and intragroup conflict: Supporting the genderedmeanings of conflict, Unawareness of conflict’s gendered meanings andCounteracting the gendered meanings of conflict. The welfare workersacknowledged the role of gender in intragroup conflicts but, paradoxically, constructed their own workplaces as gender neutral, withoutinequalities related to gender. We interpret these three postfeminist storylinesas coping strategies; that is, as ways to make sense of the falsepromise of gender egalitarianism that characterizes the Swedish labourmarket.

  • Anatomy of a 21st-century sustainability project: The untold stories
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What does a sustainability project look like in the 21st century? Not the glossy version, but the naked truth? Tired of manicured, over-theorised accounts of the ‘musts’ and ‘shoulds’ of sustainability transitions, we got to the bottom of things; actually, to the very bottom of the project hierarchy: the individual. Our point of departure is that projects are nothing but temporarily interconnected people. This means that if we don’t know what people do and what they think about their work, we will never be able to create a deeper understanding of the project, its rationale and future impact. Making use of the autoethnographic method, this book provides critical insights into what it’s like being part of a 21st-century project. Building on unfiltered first-hand contributions from 73 authors representing the five organs of a project’s anatomy – the brain (theoreticians), the skeleton (leaders), the limbs (strategists), the heart (local stakeholders) and the lungs (researchers) – the book covers all the important aspects of contemporary project-making: (1) projectification as a societal phenomenon; (2) sustainability as the main project buzzword; (3) transdisciplinarity as a hot working method; (4) economy as the invisible project propeller; (5) space as the contextual project qualifier; (6) gender and integration as the obstinate orphans of project-making; (7) trends as the villains of thoughtless project mimicry; (8) politics as the “necessary evil” of projects; and (9) knowledge production as the cornerstone of all project work. The book ends with an extensive critical analysis of what makes a project tick and how to avoid project failure. We infer that talking about project outcomes and impacts is just that… talking. What makes a difference is what can be done to the project in itself. Three important virtues – the ABC of project-making – emanate from this book’s 40 chapters: building good relationships (Affinity), having the guts to make a change (Bravery), and showing willingness to learn (Curiosity). These are the basis for the successful execution of future sustainability projects, where complexity, unpredictability and desperation will become a staple force to recon with. The original contribution of this book is to shed light on the silent triumphs and hidden pathologies of everyday project-making in an effort to elevate individual knowledge to a level of authority for solving the wicked – yet project-infused – problems of our time.

  • Leadership Development in Social Care – A Study of the Entrepreneurs and Managers of Elder Care in India and Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Purushartha: A Journal of Management, Ethics & Spirituality. - 0975-024X. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The developing world is going grey. Amidst the claims of demographic dividend of India due to its predominant young population, there is a growing population of people above 60 years of age, who constitute the aged population. There is also epidemiological evidence of growing mental health issues amongst elders in developing countries like India. The Indian elder care industry in recent years has seen tremendous growth both in terms of business and the number of opportunities for entrepreneurial start-ups. In this paper, we share the findings of an inductive (qualitative) study based on constructivist grounded theory approach, to uncover the themes that help us arrive at a conceptual model for leadership development in social care. The study was conducted on the top or senior management of elder care organizations in two different institutional contexts: India (where the elder care sector is at an initial stage of development driven by private players) and Sweden (a matured well-developed elder care system mostly organized by public sector and funded by taxes). The emerging themes helped us arrive at important values in caregiving and leadership in elder care viz., purpose, passion, patience, patient-centricity (people), and practical wisdom. This establishes the relevance of Bhattacharjee and Singh's (2017) 4P model of leadership and paves the way for future research on practicing servant leadership models in elder care (e.g. Gunnarsdóttir et al., 2018).

  • Decarbonising industry : A places-of-work research agenda
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Extractive Industries and Society. - : Elsevier. - 2214-790X .- 2214-7918. ; 15
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep decarbonisation of extractive and foundational industries will involve widespread social and economic change. Research on previous industrial restructuring has demonstrated that resultant changes will be geographically uneven, especially without countervailing state intervention. Such change has been shown to matter for both the nature and location of work in those industries as well as for the wider wellbeing of places. Concentrations of economic activity create place-based economic and sociocultural dependencies. As such in-dustries and industrial work often become entwined with workers' and communities' cultural identities. It is important to understand implications of industrial change for work, for place, and - as we argue here - relations between work and place. Building from a semi-systematic review of existing literature on industrial decarbon-isation, work and place, we extend prevailing political economic approaches to economic change, to also set out an original approach to decarbonising extractive and foundational industries, which we term 'places-of-work'. This approach is embedded in acknowledgement of the deep economic and cultural relations between work and place, which also plays out in processes of industrial decarbonisation. The approach builds from cultural and feminist approaches to economic change to emphasise sets of interrelations important to study of industrial decarbonisation as geographic phenomenon. Such an approach means extending the role of the state not as solely, or even primarily, focused on provision of training or employment opportunities, but as requiring adoption of a place-based approach to remaking economic and cultural characteristics of a location and its people. In setting out our alternative agenda, we seek to develop new insights that enable us to understand how industrial transitions potentially act within, and impact upon, places and their cultural identities, and the role of the state in reinforcing and disrupting these to support just transitions.

  • More than just a carding system: Labour implications of the EU’s illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing policy in Thailand
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Marine Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0308-597X. ; 127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globally, the EU plays a leading role in combating Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. Specifically, the EU exercises normative power to influence regulatory strategies and governing frameworks in third countries. In 2015, the EU issued Thailand a yellow card, indicating that economic sanctions would be implemented unless IUU fishing practices were eliminated. Concurrently, revelations about ‘modern slavery’ in Thailand's fishing industry had received international attention, through media and NGOs, exposing slavery-like practices among migrant fishworkers. Conventionally, the EU IUU policy addresses only issues of catch and environmental sustainability. This paper explores how an initial bilateral dialogue was bifurcated into two dialogues: a Fishery Dialogue and a Labour Dialogue. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with involved actors, expert opinions, field-visits and secondary documents, we ask: How were labour issues integrated into the bilateral dialogue, and what consequences emerged from the IUU policy for Thai fisheries management? Tracing the bilateral dialogue between EU and Thai governments, we argue that Thailand's fisheries reform was a result of both fisheries’ sustainability concerns and the kind of labour rights valued by the EU. Our Normative Power Europe approach shows how norms of labour rights shaped the reform through policies and implementation. We maintain that this unique case-study reveals how the EU incorporates a broad-based normative approach that goes beyond catch sustainability.

  • Ingår i: Sociology of health & illness. - : Wiley. - 1467-9566 .- 0141-9889. ; 43:5, s. 1270-1285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we draw on Michael Lipsky's work on street-level bureaucrats and discretion to analyse a real case setting comprising an interview study of 30 Swedish doctors regarding their experiences of changes in clinical work following patients being given access to medical records information online. We introduce the notion of invisibility work to capture how doctors exercise discretion to preserve the invisibility of their work, in contrast to the well-established notion of invisible work, which denotes work made invisible by parties other than those performing it. We discuss three main forms of invisibility work in relation to records: omitting information, cryptic writing and parallel note writing. We argue that invisibility work is a way for doctors to resolve professional tensions arising from the political decision to provide patients with online access to record information. Although invisibility work is understood by doctors as a solution to government-initiated visibility, we highlight how it can create difficulties for doctors concerning accountability towards patients, peers and authorities.

  • Digital Transformations of Traditional Work in the Nordic Countries - Edited by Bertil Rolandsson
  • 2020
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research and debates on the impact of digitalization of work often depict the effects as disruptive, and recurrently portray inherited institutions and existing policy co-ordination as out of sync with today’s changes at work. This TemaNord report presents empirically grounded studies of digitalization in traditional parts of Nordic working life, enabling readers to assess critically the claim that dramatic technologydriven changes are currently unfolding at Nordic workplaces. Recognized by their well-developed digital infrastructures, stable welfare arrangements and strong social partners, the Nordic countries provide an interesting context for studying how digitalization shapes work and what kind of policy co-ordination is needed to tackle the impact of digital change and other megatrends on jobs, employment and employment relations.

  • Drivers and barriers to business-to-business carsharing for work trips – A case study of Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Case Studies on Transport Policy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2213-624X .- 2213-6258. ; 10:4, s. 2330-2336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carsharing is an important element in the transition to a more sustainable transport system. In contrast to the widely studied business-to-consumer (B2C) market segment, studies on Business-to-business (B2B) carsharing and its impacts are limited. This paper analyses the factors that drive and hinder organisations from using B2B carsharing for their employees’ work trips. The paper takes a case study approach, analysing B2B carsharing use for local work-trips at seven employers in Gothenburg, Sweden, based on interviews with employers, property owners, and carsharing operators. Our results indicate that carsharing services can contribute to reducing the employers’ costs for work-trips, ensuring the sustainability and safety of the employee's work-trips, as well as increasing the employer's workplace attractivity. However, carsharing services are currently used only to a very limited extent. Obstacles that limit a greater use of carsharing services are employers’ lack of data on the employees’ work travel patterns, little economic incentives for employers, as well as parking management and travel policies that favour the use of the private car.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, the experiences from Gender Contact Point and The Gender Academy are harnessed with the purpose of advancing knowledge on how the societal impact and the societal relevance of research on gender issues may be reinforced by co- creative platforms for academia- society cooperation. In exploring Swedish cases, this study adds to the research stream on gender in regional innovation systems that was established by Scandinavian scholars. The research questions addressed in the study are: i) how are these co- creative platforms organized and managed?; ii) what co- creative forms and forums are applied in the platforms?; and iii) what challenges and potentials are perceivable in the platforms’ efforts to reinforce the societal impact and the societal relevance of research on gender issues? Previous research on social innovation helps address these questions, by pinpointing mechanisms for societal and organizational transformation in co- creative platforms.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Gender Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0958-9236 .- 1465-3869. ; 31:3, s. 364-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How organizations engage with gender equality is crucial to them being perceived as fair and attractive employers. As recruitment and training of personnel is a core function of the military organization, it is relevant to investigate this from a gender critical perspective. The aim was to critically examine how a military organization operates in respect of equality of pay between women and men by means of a collective agreement, as an example of how the organization tries to address gender inequality. A qualitative analysis using Bacchi's 'What is the problem represented to be' (2009) analysis of policy documents was conducted. The analysis focuses on how the actual issue is problematized and what is left unproblematised, and the key findings are that efforts to achieve gender equality within the Swedish Armed Forces are counterproductive and result in perpetuating deficiencies in the organization's work with wider gender-equality issues. Despite external pressures, there is a structural reluctance and inability within the Swedish Armed Forces to seriously engage with addressing the organization's gender-equality issues. As resistance to gender-equality work is usually implicit, this study's strongest contribution to the field is that such resistance can be identified as being explicit and therefore more easily challenged.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sexual Aggression. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1355-2600 .- 1742-6545.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sexual and gender-based harassment is a work environment concern, especially in hierarchical and male-dominant organisations such as the police. This scoping review aims to examine the existing literature on such harassment against police employees in Europe to identify the available knowledge and highlight the gaps for future studies. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, 16 relevant articles were analysed. Most of the studies were focused on sexual harassment, and gender-based harassment was mostly absent or mixed with other discriminations. The analysis resulted in six main themes: existence of sexual and gender-based harassment; perpetrators; associated factors; consequences; individual response; and impact of organisational policies. The findings demonstrate that such harassment remains prevalent among police employees, emphasising the need for continuous and rigorous supervision, evaluation, and comprehensive revision of policies by police authorities. This study recommends further research to address the identified gaps in this field.PRACTICE IMPACT STATEMENTThe findings presented in this article have the potential to significantly advance the field of police research in Europe by providing a comprehensive map of existing knowledge and identifying important gaps within this research domain. Moreover, the study facilitates the application of more accurate and comprehensive methodologies. Additionally, the outcomes of this research can directly benefit police authorities by offering insights to enhance organizational culture and the work environment for police employees.

  • Ingår i: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0029-1951 .- 1502-5292. ; 75:3, s. 171-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mainstreaming is a popular approach when seeking to address societal inequalities. Gender and migrant integration are mainstreamed within EU policy, both seeking to increase labour market participation as a means to redress inequality. However, there are limited references to migrant women within gender equality or integration policies at the EU level. The study dissects a subset of migrant integration projects in Sweden – a country lauded for having Europe’s best integration policy while exhibiting the poorest results. The authors used non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews to identify pitfalls such as embedded stereotyping, undervaluation of cultural motivations, gender-washing, and methodological misalignment. Their findings show that gender and integration mainstreaming within the EU systematically position migrant women as a problem, despite the significantly important role they play within global labour markets. The authors conclude that migrant women may need to be included within gender and integration policy beyond the labour market.

    • Through the concepts of temporal racism and racial capitalism, this articleexplores how time is racialized in Swedish unemployment projects, shapinga racialized and gendered division of labor. The article identifies three formsof temporal racism practices: temporal racism through the invisibilization ofwork, through waiting, and through wasting. I argue that these practices oftemporal racism create diverse forms of labor and are therefore importantfactors in the production and reproduction of racial capitalism. Temporalracism deprives those defined as ‘foreign-born unemployed women’ of timefor joy, pleasure, community, and family; instead, it ensures that their time isused to transform them into racialized workers, moving between precariousemployment and surplus populations.

  • Choosing to Work Part-Time – Combinations of Motives and the Role of Preferences and Constraints
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. - : Stockholm University Press. - 2002-2867. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to contribute to the understanding of motives for part-time work and discuss the role of preferences and constraints by studying combinations of motives for part-time work in a case where the scope for preferences is great. The data was derived from a survey of full-time employees in a Swedish municipality who have opted to work part-time with lower salary. Eight groups of part-time workers with different combinations of motives were identified using cluster analysis. Although formally all of these employees were voluntarily working part-time, to a greater or lesser extent the preference for part-time can be understood as an accommodation to constraints for all of the eight clusters. Even though the motives were complex, for many, part-time work was a strategy to cope with a high workload in relation to their own health and capacity.

  • Crime investigations of ‘child abuse material’ - Challenges and opportunities posed by digital technology
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Association of Internet Researchers, Dublin, Ireland.. - : University of Illinois Libraries.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increased digitalisation of society has profoundly changed the circumstances for people with a sexual interest in children to engage in the production, distribution and consumption of child abuse material. In addition, digital technologies enable contact and communication with other like-minded individuals sharing the same sexual interest in children and also facilitate new forms of getting in contact with children (potential victims). Child abuse material (sometimes also referred to as child pornography) refers to documented material depicting the sexual abuse and/or sexual exploitation of a child (or children). The overall purpose with this study is to explore the practices where crime investigations of child abuse material occur within the Swedish police authority. This research in progress paper will reflect on what challenges and opportunities police officers do encounter when investigating child abuse material in relation to digital technologies? The involved technology will be investigated in relation to technological affordance and empirically the study is based upon qualitative interviews with police officers.

  • Accountingisation of social care: the multiplicity and embeddedness of calculations and valuations in costing and caring practices
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management/Emerald. - 1176-6093. ; 20:1, s. 144-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Purpose This study aims to explore the calculations and valuations that unfold in everyday practices within social care settings. Specifically, the paper concerns the role of accounting in dealing with multiple ctiplicity produced in constructing the client as an object through the calculations and valuations embedded in the costing and caring practices in social work. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative case study in a Swedish social care organisation, with a specific focus on the calculations and valuations within the case management process. The data have been gathered from 20 interviews with social workers, team leaders, managers and a management accountant, along with more than 36h of on-site observations and internal organisational documents, including policy documents, guidelines and procedural lists. Findings The case management process involves interconnected practices in constructing the client as an object. While monetary calculations and those associated with worth are embedded in costing and caring practices, they interact and proliferate in various ways. Three elements are found: transforming service units into centres of calculation, constructing the accounts of calculation and establishing the cost-value calculations. Calculations and valuations are actuated in these elements in describing the need, matching the case with the unit and caseworker and deciding on the measure. The objectification of the client entails the construction of accounts, for example, ongoing qualifications, categorisations and groupings of units, juridical frameworks, case types, needs and measures. As an object multiple, the client becomes different objects at different stages, challenging the establishment accounts, and thus producing a range of calculations and valuations. Such diversity in calculations concomitantly produces more calculations to represent the present and absent multiple facets of the client, resulting in a multiplicity of costing and caring. Practical implications The study might flag up for practitioners the possible risks and unintended consequences of depending too much on fixed guidelines and (performance) indicators since social work involves object multiples, which are always in diversity and changeable in situ. Considering the multiple dimensions within the specific contexts could thus be helpful to mitigate such risks in the evaluation of social care processes and the design of (performance) metrics. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on accountingisation by extending the concept as a part of ongoing organisational practices, materialised within the calculations of money and worth in everyday social care. Besides demonstrating their reconsolidation, this study shows a multiplicity of costing and caring practices depending on the way the client is constructed, resulting in the proliferation of accounting(s) and ultimately accountingisation of social work.

  • AI and Swedish Heritage Organisations : challenges and opportunities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: AI & Society. - : Springer Nature. - 0951-5666 .- 1435-5655.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the challenges and opportunities that arise with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods and tools when implemented within cultural heritage institutions (CHIs), focusing on three selected Swedish case studies. The article centres on the perspectives of the CHI professionals who deliver that implementation. Its purpose is to elucidate how CHI professionals respond to the opportunities and challenges AI/ML provides. The three Swedish CHIs discussed here represent different organizational frameworks and have different types of collections, while sharing, to some extent, a similar position in terms of the use of AI/ML tools and methodologies. The overarching question of this article is what is the state of knowledge about AI/ML among Swedish CHI professionals, and what are the related issues? To answer this question, we draw on (1) semi-structured interviews with CHI professionals, (2) individual CHI website information, and (3) CHI-internal digitization protocols and digitalization strategies, to provide a nuanced analysis of both professional and organisational processes concerning the implementation of AI/ML methods and tools. Our study indicates that AI/ML implementation is in many ways at the very early stages of implementation in Swedish CHIs. The CHI professionals are affected in their AI/ML engagement by four key issues that emerged in the interviews: their institutional and professional knowledge regarding AI/ML; the specificities of their collections and associated digitization and digitalization issues; issues around personnel; and issues around AI/ML resources. The article suggests that a national CHI strategy for AI/ML might be helpful as would be knowledge-, expertise-, and potentially personnel- and resource-sharing to move beyond the constraints that the CHIs face in implementing AI/ML.

  • The capability of organizations to manage delayed retirement
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Effectiveness: People and Performance. - 2051-6614. ; 7:1, s. 38-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This work was undertaken in order to develop a conceptual model for identification of the capability of an organization to implement age management measures. Design/methodology/approach – Barriers to delayed retirement were reviewed; observations retrieved from a research consortium study were used to identify main attributes that needed to be taken into consideration in the development of the model. Findings – The capability of organizations to react to the demographic challenge by introduction of age management measures can be classified operatively as “proactive”, “reactive”, “passive” or “chained”, depending on their resources and preferences. Practical implications – The model may be useful to HR as a point of departure in the development of a business case for age management and a didactic tool to be used in internal marketing. Originality/value – The concept “organizational capability” was developed as a corollary to the individual aspects of capability; recognizing preference and resource as main drivers made it possible to develop a typology that is new and is easy to understand and apply.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Digital Transformations of Traditional Work in the Nordic Countries - Edited by Bertil Rolandsson. - : Nordic Council of Ministers. - 9789289368032
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on a qualitative study of companies in the male-dominated manufacturing sector constituting a corner-stone of the Nordic labour market models, Chapter 4 shows not only that digitalization blurs existing boundaries between white-collar and blue-collar workers, but also that different digital technologies are linked with different patterns and opportunities for upskilling between different groups of employees. Based on 65 interviews with representatives of plant management, local trade unions and employees at eight industrial sites in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, the study examines the micro-level processes that condition different priorities and organizational responses to the emerging demands for digital skills, changes in work organization and upgrading of work in practice. Especially for bluecollar workers, where unskilled jobs tend to disappear (or be outsourced), the changes in job content, skill requirements, job demarcations, and health and safety conditions were mainly perceived as an upgrading of work (for those who remained). By moving beyond descriptions of digitalization as a coherent, unitary force and distinguishing between the digitalization of production, administration and communication, the chapter identifies significant variation in how the industrial actors respond to the demand for upskilling. While bringing clear prospects for job upgrading among most blue-collar workers, white-collar workers do not experience similar opportunities to rise in the occupational structure, but rather, encounter intensified individualized demands within existing positions to keep themselves updated and agile.

  • The emergence of connected discretion: Social media and discretionary awareness in the Swedish police
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Qualitative research in organization and management. - 1746-5648 .- 1746-5656. ; 15:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Previous studies repeatedly claim that social media challenge and even disrupt organizational boundaries conditioning discretionary work. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how police officers, drawing on institutionalized value logics, actively shape their awareness of how to use social media with discretion. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on semi-structured interviews with police officers from Sweden, the analysis explores similarities and variations in how they assess their discretionary awareness of how to manage social media potentials across different police practices. Supporting documents have been analyzed to put interviews into context. Findings – The analysis shows how police officers justify their awareness of how to manage two social media potentials providing communicative efficiency and networking opportunities, by applying two justificatory modalities of momentary reconciliation. Contributing to previous research, findings show how these modalities accommodate tensions between different value logics urging officers to engage in situated problem solving or moderation of the intensity in different connections. By drawing on discretionary awareness about enduring value tensions, police officers maintain legitimate claims on social media discretion. The study also complements previous research depicting digital communication and discretion as mutually exclusive. Findings suggest that web-based digitalization like social media raises new demands of awareness of a connected discretion. Originality/value – Previous research rarely analyses officers’ awareness of how to manage idiosyncratic social media challenges. By introducing the concept discretionary awareness, this study illuminates how arrangements of institutionalized value logics guide police officers in applying “good judgment” in day-to-day use of social media.

  • A Multi-Domain instrument for safety Climate : Military safety climate questionnaire (MSCQ) and NOSACQ-50
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Safety Science. - : Elsevier. - 0925-7535 .- 1879-1042. ; 154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to adjust and develop Nordic Safety Climate Questionnaire (NOSACQ-50) specifically for the military domain. Many safety climate instruments have been developed for complex organizations but few with a military perspective including military exercises and physical training. Data were collected during two separate occasions, experiment one (n = 956) and experiment two (n = 377). The questionnaire was distributed to civilian and military personnel working in the Swedish Armed Forces and to military cadets. The results of experiment one was then analyzed using principal component analyses and confirmatory factor analyses, the factor structure was reproduced in experiment two. The results from the study confirmed the reliability and validity of NOSACQ-50 as a safety climate instrument in the military organization. However, several new factors were identified with the military safety climate questionnaire (MSCQ). Physical fitness and exercises are important activities in the military but are less important in other organizations which could explain why it isn’t present in traditional safety climate instruments. This study identifies several limitations one being the design of questions suitable for both military and civilian personnel. Another limitation is combat operations, this data collection recognizes the field but was unable to capture data from actual combat operations. Further research is needed to fully develop more dimensions for both exercises and combat operations.

  • Planning for Safety when Preparing for War : Competition Brings Out the Wickedness of the Military
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 27th ICCRTS Proceedings. - : International Command and Control Institute. ; , s. 1-16, s. 1-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study investigates how two-sided military exercises affect learning and participating personnel's ability to perform tasks safely when confronted with an equally matched opponent. Data were collected from two separate events the Northern Wind 2019 Final Planning Conference and the Northern Wind 2019 exercise using participatory observations and shadowing. The outline of the critical incident technique was used as a guide when designing the data collection and the activity theory framework was used for coding and analyzing the data. The results indicate that a driven desire to win two-sided military exercises can create unsafe work practices by performing work tasks without regard for occupational-, electrical- or fire safety. The results also indicate a need for reshaping the conception of a two-sided military exercise by treating the exercise as a learning opportunity and recognizing the impact of the participating unit on each other’s learning. The study is based on the results of one army exercise and requires further research to understand the activities that take place and how they affect learning and safety. However, it gives some insight into the learning problems occurring during military field exercises.

  • Säkerhetsklimat i en militär organisation
  • 2022
For att kartlägga säkerhetsklimatet används olika enkätinstrument. Skuggning användes for att följa övningsdeltagarna under övningen NW19.

Uppfattningar bland medarbetare i Göteborgs Stad
  • 2020
