  • Why Do Soldiers Rape? Masculinity, Violence, and Sexuality in the Armed Forces in the Congo (DRC)
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Studies Quarterly. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1468-2478 .- 0020-8833. ; 53:2, s. 495-518
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the ways soldiers in the Congo speak about the massive amount of rape committed by the armed forces in the recent war in the DRC. It focuses on the reasons that the soldiers give to why rape occurs. It discusses how the soldiers distinguish between ‘‘lust rapes’’ and ‘‘evil rapes’’ and argues that their explanations of rape must be understood in relation to notions of different (impossible) masculinities. Ultimately, through reading the soldiers’ words, we can glimpse the logics—arguably informed by the increasingly globalized context of soldiering—through which rape becomes possible, and even ‘‘normalized’’ in particular warscapes.

  • Chemistries of Love. Impotence, erectile dysfunction and Viagra in Läkartidningen
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: NORMA. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget AS. - 1890-2138 .- 1890-2146. ; 3:1, s. 31-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the discourse surrounding impotence, erectile dysfunction and Viagra in the Swedish medical journal Läkartidningen. It draws on articles published from 1990 to 2006, the eight years prior to and after Viagra’s 1998 introduction. Close reading of the articles has shown changes over this time period in how the impotent patient is defined. It has also revealed a transition in the discourse from the term impotence to erectile dysfunction. In these articles the role of the (female) partner in finding a solution to impotence and the social aspects of impotence also change dramatically once Viagra is available. Results from this study are contextualized against similar research that has examined the medical discourse around erectile dysfunction in the international arena.

  • Se upp - allt fler kvinnor kör som män! : Nollvisionen som diskurs och problemet män i trafiken
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap. - Karlstad : Föreningen Tidskrift för Genusforskning. - 1654-5443 .- 2001-1377. ; :2-3, s. 97-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is the first country in the world to have introduced the so-called Vision Zero (Nollvisionen). This is an ethical approach suggesting that road safety cannot be traded for mobility. Since the beginning of mass-motoring, men have been over-represented in traffic safety statistics, in terms of both ‘causing’ accidents and casualties. Against the background of the Swedish Vision Zero, it is quite extraordinary how little attention work on traffic safety has paid to men’s over-representation in Swedish fatal road accidents (90%), and (auto)mobility as a way of doing gender. The present article discusses how men and women driver subjects are produced through the Vision Zero discourse, with a particular focus on how men in traffic are constructed. This is important since such constructions and modes of address affect possible interventions and ‘solutions’ regarding road safety issues. Here I focus on three contemporary documents of policy making character or with general impact: first, the Governmental Act 2003 on road safety intervention; second, a report from the Swedish Road Administration which is applying a gender equality discourse on transport; and third a brochure issued by the Road Administration addressed to the everyday road user. These documents constitute case material that is illustrative of the Vision Zero as a generative apparatus of gender discourse. The article brings attention to the ambiguous ways in which the Vision Zero may, on the one hand, explicitly address men as problematic driver subjects, as an explicitly gendered high risk category; and, on the other, make men and masculine norms implicit through the rendering of young(er) driver subjects as problematic. This also involves pointing out women as an up and coming high risk category. To improve road safety, the discursive effects of this configuration suggest allocating responsibility partly to the ‘system’, partly to women driver subjects – in effect, to women who drive like men – rather than the men driver subjects.

  • Reconstruction planning in post-conflict zones : Bosnia and Herzegovina and the international community
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The history of mankind has been plagued by an almost continuous chain of various armed conflicts - local, regional, national and global - that have caused horrendous damage to the social and physical fabric of cities. The tragedy of millions deprived by war still continues. This study sets out to understand the nature of reconstruction after war in the light of recent armed conflicts. It attempts to catalogue and discuss the tasks involved in the process of reconstruction planning by establishing a conceptual framework of the main issues in the reconstruction process. The case of Bosnia and Herzegovina is examined in detail and on the whole acts as the leit-motif of the whole dissertation and positions reconstruction in the broader context of sustainable development. The study is organized into two parts that constitute the doctoral aggregate dissertation – a combining of papers with an introductory monograph. In this case the introductory monograph is an extended one and there are six papers that follow. Both sections can be read on their own merits but also constitute one entity. The rebuilding of war-devastated countries and communities can be seen as a series of nonintegrated activities carried out (and often imposed) by international agencies and governments, serving political and other agendas. The result is that calamities of war are often accompanied by the calamities of reconstruction without any regard to sustainable development. The body of knowledge related to post-conflict reconstruction lacks a strong and cohesive theory. In order to better understand the process of reconstruction we present a qualitative inquiry based on the Grounded Theory Method developed originally by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss (1967). This approach utilizes a complex conceptualization with empirical evidence to produce theoretical structure. The results of process have evolved into the development of a conceptual model, called SCOPE (Sustainable Communities in Post-conflict Environments). This study proposes both a structure within which to examine post-conflict reconstruction and provides an implementation method. We propose to use the SCOPE model as a set of strategy, policy and program recommendations to assist the international community and all relevant decision-makers to ensure that the destruction and carnage of war does not have to be followed by a disaster of post-conflict reconstruction. We also offer to provide a new foundation and paradigm on post-conflict reconstruction, which incorporates and integrates a number of approaches into a multidisciplinary and systems thinking manner in order to better understand the complexity and dependencies of issues at hand. We believe that such a systems approach could better be able to incorporate the complexities involved and would offer much better results than the approaches currently in use.The final section of this study returns to the fact that although it is probably impossible to produce universal answers, we desperately need to find commonalities amongst different postconflict reconstruction settings in order to better deal with the reconstruction planning in a more dynamic, proactive, and sustainable manner.

  • Discourse analysis and oral history. Intersections of gender, locality, nation and religion in narratives from a Jewish refugee in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ENQUIRE. - 2041-6776. ; :1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we elaborate on the possibility to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history within one methodological framework in order to explore how identities are narrated and negotiated in relation to different situations, contexts and interviewers. In oral history, the purpose is often to “give voice” to marginalized or forgotten individuals or groups, to listen to their stories and give them the possibility to speak from their perspectives. We agree with these emancipatory aims of oral history. Simultaneously we deconstruct and analyze interviews in order to investigate identity constructions. We work with the concepts of intersectionality and narrated identity, which allow us to investigate how groups and individuals that are marginalized and discriminated negotiate their own and other identities. At the same time it is unclear if our interviewees understand these kinds of analysis of their narratives. In order to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history in a fruitful way, we must be aware of this relation of power and explain to the interviewees what we are doing and why we are doing it. In a broader research perspective this deconstructive approach illustrates interesting assumptions about multidimensional identity constructions.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: World Congress on Environmental History, Abstract volume. Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 August 2009..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agribusiness and Green power - the benefits for whom? A case study from Tanzania Wilhelm Östberg1 and Gunilla A. Olsson2 1 Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University, SE -106 91 Stockholm, Sweden 2 School of Global Studies, P.O. Box 700, Göteborg University, SE-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden The current excited interest in alternatives to fossil fuel is based on the growing insights of the rapid decrease of the global stores of fossil resources for energy production. This has led to a global race for discovering and developing new energy sources – with the dual goal of using renewable resources and to decrease CO2 emissions. Large-scale plantations of rapid growing crops suitable for processing to ethanol or bio-diesel are established especially in tropical and sub-tropical environments. Land, arable and non-arable, has become an expensive commodity linked to high expectations on conveying wealth and large economic benefits to the involved groups. Investors from all parts of the world are searching for suitable areas that can be transformed to bio-energy plantations. This happens in Tanzania where large-scale plantations of sugar cane for ethanol production for the European market, is under way put in order by a foreign company and with encouragement from the Tanzanian government. The land was sold very cheap by the government with the expectation that this enterprise would contribute to positive economic development for the country. It is stated that the new land use would be very profitable since this dryland is unproductive and deserted by humans. This paper presents a study on the implications for local communities and their possibilities to sustainable development when being involved in the globalised market of the production of biofuel. The current and historical land use in this region based on documents and interviews of local communities is surveyed with specific focus on the resource use in local agro-ecosystems. The influence of the new enterprise with its related activities on the livelihoods and resource needs of local peoples are studied. The production of green biofuels is related to the questions of sustainable development for different societies and at different time and spatial scales.

  • Children's fear as experienced by the parents of children with cancer
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 22:3, s. 233-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is known that children with cancer experience and express fear, but little is found in the literature about how the parents experience their child's fear. This study aimed to highlight the parents' lived experience and understanding of their child's fear. Focus group interviews with 15 parents were performed. Data were analyzed through a phenomenological hermeneutic method. Fear in children with cancer is described by the parents as a multidimensional phenomenon, which is somehow difficult to identify. It appears in contrast to the absence of fear. The comprehensive understanding of the results reveals that the parents experience their children's fear as both a suffering and an ethical demand for the parents to answer.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 22:1, s. 71-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research on fear in children with cancer has often focused on interventions to alleviate fear related to medical procedures and less on how to meet the challenges related to existential fear. This study aimed to describe how experienced nurses and physicians handle fear in children with cancer. Ten nurses and physicians with more than 10 years of experience in child oncology from a university hospital in Sweden were interviewed, and a qualitative content analysis was performed on the data. Nurses' and physicians' handling of fear encompasses commitment and closeness and yet also a distancing from fear and its expressions

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-7333 .- 1873-7625. ; 37:3, s. 407-429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various researchers and policy analysts have made empirical studies of innovation systems in order to understand their current structure and trace their dynamics. However, policy makers often experience difficulties in extracting practical guidelines from studies of this kind. In this paper, we operationalize our previous work on a functional approach to analyzing innovation system dynamics into a practical scheme of analysis for policy makers. The scheme is based on previous literature and our own experience in developing and applying functional thinking. It can be used by policy makers not only to identify the key policy issues but also to set policy goals. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Interdisciplinarity and knowledge organisation - Prospects for Human Ecology in academia?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: XVI International Conference of the Society for Human Ecology - Integrative thinking for complex futures: Creating resilience in human-nature systems. ; 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Human Ecology is after half a century still an embryonic academic subject, characterised by a vague and contested knowledge core and lack of successful research programs. There are many reasons for this problematic condition, including epistemic diversity, institutional structures and knowledge politics in academia at large as well as cognitive limitations of individual researchers and values in the knowledge culture of human ecology. Further, Human Ecology as a broad interdisciplinary field nowadays has to compete with disciplinary based strong environmental research programs within the social sciences like environmental politics, environmental sociology and environmental economy as well as several mature environmental natural sciences. Given these conditions, what are the prospects for Human Ecology in academia? This paper will contribute to this discussion by analysis of a single case, Human Ecology in the local context of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. This may illuminate more general characteristics that can be used for informed strategic decisions for future paths of development.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - 0044-7447. ; 34:2, s. 65-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the Swedish research program SUCOZOMA (Sustainable Coastal Zone Management) several conflict studies have been carried out. Whereas the detailed results of these studies are published separately, this paper reviews important results from conflict research in combination with a summarizing and generalizing discussion of approaches and main results of SUCOZOMA's resource and conflicts studies. After an analysis of interdisciplinary and theoretical research about environmental and resource use conflicts, the methodology used in SUCOZOMA is presented, a combined stakeholder and conflict analysis. It can be summarized in four main points: i) to map the stakeholders and their interests; ii) to analyse the conflicts; iii) to develop methods for conflict mitigation and cooperation with stakeholders; iv) to integrate these components in a system for the management of natural resources. Exemplary case studies of resource use conflicts have been carried out at the Swedish west and east coast including coastal fishery, mussel culture, coastal planning and specific conflicts such as between species protection (seals) and coastal fishery. Researchers are involved as experts and as conflicting parties, and the role of scientists as stakeholders deserves special attention in conflict research. Conflict management is not only for the solution of present conflicts, but part of integrated resource management systems where knowledge transfer, institutional development, collective learning of scientific, political and administrative actors, and cooperation between scientists and resource users can occur.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Science for Sustainable Development. The Social Challenge with Emphasis on the Conditions for Change. - Uppsala : VHU. ; , s. 141-148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A passive house may reduce the energy demand for heating in dwellings by 80 percent. So far, Germany has been the main market for the concept, where a limit of 15 kWh per square metre per year has been set for household heating. These buildings are extremely air tight, have thick insulation and rely mainly on passive sources of heating, for example solar heating through window panes and heat surplus from humans and domestic appliances. Since the early 2000's, passive houses have also been established on the Swedish market and this paper shows how this was achieved. Established networks within the building sector became the platform for the implementation of houses incorporating passive houses. An important part of the implementation process was the stakeholders' tactile experiences of the concept. Also, the local urban regime of Göteborg played an important role and provided resources from the municipality, academia and the Göteborg trade and industry. As a consequence, housing companies owned by the municipality were important facilitators for the establishment of passive design in housing.

  • Energy choices in households - consumption for sustainability
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: VHU Conference on Science for Sustainable Development,2007. - Uppsala : VHU. ; , s. 141-148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consumption has become one of the most crucial factors, or tools, for managing development towards sustainability. Consumption offers different choices on the scale of more or less sustainable commodities. The politics and responsibility for the environment has to a large extent been transferred from an aggregate level of national politics to the world of everyday life. This paper investigates how different actors try to influence the choices made in the world of everyday life concerning energy. The study is conducted through interviews with different actors such as energy companies and municipal energy advisors, and by participating observation of practices where households are informed or educated in areas concerning energy. Another growing source of information and knowledge is, of course, the Internet. A number of different websites have been selected and analyzed in the same manner as other material. There are different ways to motivate households to change their energy behaviour. There is a strong conviction that in order to change behaviour, something must be gained, preferably economic gain. A more efficient way of living results in more money left in the wallet, and a positive side effect is that it is also good for the environment. The idea of efficiency might be the strongest one. Increasing efficiency is a way of not changing lifestyle but changing technical equipment and user routines.

  • 2008. - 1
  • Ingår i: Vardagsteknik: Energi och IT. - Stockholm : Carlsson Bokförlag. - 9789173311441 - 9173311448 ; , s. 57-82
