  • Dissecting the Gatekeepers : Relational Perspectives on the Power of Search Engines
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Deep Search. - Innsbruck, Wien, Bozen : Studienverlag. - 9783706547956 ; , s. 117-132
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper engages in an in-depth discussion of the search engine Google, focusing on its relationship to webmasters and users. Attempts by webmasters to game the ranking system in order to boost the position of their websites are met by Google with a subtle combination of rewards and punishment. It is argued that this strategy involves the establishment of a disciplinary regime that enforces a certain norm for web publishing. Google’s relationship to the users, on the other hand, is characterized by less invasive forms of power. By inserting itself deeply into the users’ information environment, Google can collect and analyze unprecedented amounts of user data. It is argued that the modeling of segmented consumption behavior that these schemes are based upon involves a governmental form of power. It is a kind of power that aims at controlling differential behavior patterns by gaining an intimate statistical knowledge of a population and using this knowledge as a means of predictive risk management.

  • Desperately seeking the consumer : Personalized search engines and the commercial exploitation of user data
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: First Monday. - : University of Illinois Libraries. - 1396-0466. ; 12:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With reference to surveillance studies theory, this paper critically assesses the role of personalized search engines as a mediator between advertisers and users. It first sketches the economic and technical background of online marketing and personalized searches. Then, it engages in an in-depth discussion of two examples of personalized search engines with regard to the data collection process used and the way in which this data is used for advertising purposes. The discussion shows that users' information needs, as well as their personal data, are subject to a growing pressure in terms of commercial exploitation. Essentially, search engines now fulfill the task of translating information needs into consumption needs.

  • ’Think of it first as an advertising system’ : Personalisierte Online-Suche als Datenlieferant des Marketings
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Kommunikation@gesellschaft. - 1616-2617. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Methodologies for tracking learning paths: designing the on-line research study Making a Filmmaker
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: MedieKultur. - Aalborg : Sammenslutningen af Medieforskere i Danmark. - 0900-9671 .- 1901-9726. ; 46, s. 73-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article concerns the design of a collaborative research project (2008-09) entitled Making a Filmmaker, which examines how young Scandinavian filmmakers create their own learning paths in formal and/or informal contexts. Our interest is in how learning experiences and contexts motivate the young filmmakers: what furthers their interest and/or hinders it, and what learning patterns emerge. The aim of this article is to present and discuss issues regarding the methodology and methods of the study, such as developing a relationship with interviewees when conducting interviews online (using MSN). We suggest two considerations about using online interviews: how the interviewees value the given subject of conversation and their familiarity with being online. The benefit of getting online communication with the young filmmakers is the ease it offers, because it is both practical and appropriates a meeting platform that is familiar to our participants.

  • The role of the individual : a key to learning in preparedness organisations
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management. - : Wiley. - 1468-5973 .- 0966-0879. ; 16:2, s. 135-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A well functioning societal response to crises is benefited by individuals having adequate skills and knowledge. From a municipal perspective this requires the creation of a learning organization. The objective of this study is to determine whether individual municipal employees, who have the responsibility for preparedness planning, reason and act in ways that promote learning about crises and preparedness issues throughout the municipal organization. Analysis of interviews with preparedness planners in six Swedish municipalities on their strategies for preparedness planning, reveal that preparedness planning too often becomes a demarcated activity, restricted to not more than a handful of individuals. This study indicates that one reason for why the preparedness work becomes demarcated is that individuals central to the preparedness planning are not taking on roles for acting in ways that are required in order for a learning organization to be established.

  • Mama Ludens Goes All-In : Gaming Mothers' Fun Lead the Ludic Revolution
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 1-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates gaming mothers' playing practices, trying to identify their ideas of fun and playfulness. It is a work in progress, the third in a series of empirical studies performed within the framework of the project "Gaming Moms: Juggling Time, Play and Family Life" (Enevold & Hagström, Lund University) undertaken with the aim to revise the usual constructions of gamer identities and examine the contested status of gaming in everyday life. The first paper produced in this project was a critical survey of representations of mothers in popular cultural gaming discourses (Enevold & Hagström 2008) that showed a rather conservative picture of "Mom" in relation to gaming. The dominant image of the mother in this public discourse is far from general notions of fun—she is the police who controls or condemns the playing of others. The second effort (Enevold, Hagström & Aarseth 2008) was a pilot study presenting findings from a small number of interviews with gaming mothers that showed that their gameplay to a great extent involved gendered ideas of work and family roles, particularly time and place constraints. The emphasis lay very much on playing for the sake of relaxation while waiting for something else—for the pasta to cook, for the kids to come home, or in between dinner and putting the kids to bed. Going back to some of the interviews and including a number of new ones, this paper deals with that which was not explicitly or extensively discussed in those interviews, namely what these women think of fun and play. This is related to four themes of gendered sociality, representational exclusion and accessibility in terms of game content and time constraints of gaming - which is understood as a motor of fun – as represented in research, media and web material concerning mothers, fun and videogames. Based on all this material, I conclude that fun in most instances still means relaxation, having time to yourself, being mentally stimulated by a puzzle or a good story. I thus advocate ludic fun for all – do away with the gendered division of labor, play and gamer identity; redefine the concept of gamer once and for all; let gaming become mass culture and allow mothers all over the world to relax "playing for keeps"; bring on the ludic revolution!

  • Collaborative Learning as a Collective Competence when Students Use the Potential of Meaning in Asynchronous Dialogues
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Computers and education. - : Elsevier. - 0360-1315 .- 1873-782X. ; 52:3, s. 656-667
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to examine and to describe how student teachers engaged in courses in web-based learning environments over a period of 40 weeks develop a collective competence to collaborate. The collective competence of collaboration is defined as the level of learning ability a group of students express when using dialogues as a tool for their own and other’s learning in a web-based learning environment. The students’ contributions to the course assignments, the group responses and the collaborative discussions and dialogues were analysed and interpreted based on Bakhtin’s and Rommetveit’s theories on dialogic interactions and meaning potentials. The results describe three different levels at which students use dialogues as a tool for learning when they collaborate within the group.

  • For the good of the net : The Pirate Bay as strategic sovereign
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Culture Machine. - 1465-4121. ; 10, s. 64-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay I will argue that as peer-to-peer (p2p)-based file-sharing increasingly becomes the norm for media acquisition among the general Internet public, entities such as The Pirate Bay and associated quasi-institutional entities such as Piratbyrån, Zeropaid, TorrentFreak, etc. have begun to appear less as a reactive force (i.e. ‘breaking the rules’) and more as a proactive one (‘setting the rules’). In providing platforms for sharing and for voicing dissent towards the established entertainment industry, the increasing autonomy gained by these piratical actors becomes more akin to the concept of ‘positive liberty’ than to a purely ‘negative,’ reactive one.1 Rather than complain about the conservatism of established forms of distribution they simply create new, alternative ones. Entities such as The Pirate Bay can thus be said to have effectively had the ‘upper hand’ in the conflict over the future of copyright and digital distribution. They increasingly set the terms with regard to establishing not only technical protocols for distribution but also codes of behaviour and discursive norms. The entertainment industry is then forced to react to these terms. In this sense, the likes of The Pirate Bay become – in the language of French philosopher Michel de Certeau (1984) – strategic rather than tactical. With this, however, comes the added problem of becoming exposed by their opponents as visible perpetrators of particular acts. The strategic sovereignty of sites such as The Pirate Bay makes them appear to be the reason for the wider change in media distribution, not just an incidental side-effect of it.

  • The Diaspora on Display : Production, Performance and Media Practices in Urban Space
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper takes its point of departure in a broader study of street vendors and the positions they occupy in the mix of urban public life.   In many city environments vending and other forms of public practice have been increasingly subject to regulation. Debates arise over how public space is used, focusing on the visual quality and aesthetics of a particular display or practice, without directly addressing the often equally controversial issue of the social or ethnic group responsible for the display. In the present paper we select two aspects of the initial study for a closer examination among a broader sample of vendors. First, we examine the ways street vending is often extended into a range of media practices.  While they rarely rent a locale, vendors are quite likely to have a home page and an email address, linked to the marketing of their wares.  The sale of records, DVDs and other media products may also be part of their business. Second, we look more specifically at vending as a migratory phenomenon, with links between individuals and communities in different countries.  In what sense do the vendors who are not “native” to the place where they are selling their wares see themselves as linked to other places and communities?  Whereas in some cases vending provides a way of establishing a base in a new country or community, for others it provides experience and income that is needed in order to support and return home.
