  • Organisationsteori för mediemedarbetare
  • 2014

  • Shopping for Change: Commodifying Practices in Non-profit Fundraising Discourse
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ISTR Working Papers Series. ; IX
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on theories of marketized philanthropy and identity politics, this article strives to explore nonprofit fundraising as a discursive practice, connected to political, economic, and cultural processes of individualization and marketization. Fundraising texts from six Swedish aid organizations are analyzed, using critical discourse analysis, focusing on the representations of donors, and the act of giving. The research shows that fundraising messages are mainly configured around the act of donating as a form of transaction, where the donor buys a commodified version of the idea or efforts of the organization. Through the transaction of symbolical goods the organizations provide a form of participation that is quick and easy, a concrete way of ‘making change’. This suggests that the donation becomes a form of commodity activism which situates the donor in the position of customer, rather than citizen.

  • Family talk, peer talk, and young people’s civic orientation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 28:3, s. 294-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on interpersonal communication in the family and among peers in order to empirically examine the general idea that everyday civic talk might develop young people’s civic orientation. Two questions are addressed: (1) What is the significance of civic talk in relation to key dimensions of young people’s civic orientation? (2) What does civic talk in peer settings specifically contribute to young people’s civic orientation? The study is based on survey data from high school students and their parents (N = 1148). The findings offer clear support to the idea that civic talk in everyday contexts matters for young people’s development of political knowledge, democratic values and different forms of civic practices. Civic talk in peer settings contributes uniquely to all dimensions of youths’ civic orientation. Implications of the findings for political socialization research and theories of the democratic mechanisms of civic talk are discussed.

  • Social Media Supporting Democratic Dialogue
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ambiguous Technologies. - Lisbon : Autónoma University. ; , s. 36-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term of “social media” appears in newspapers and magazines everyday and the huge number of people use social media actively in daily life. Nowadays, in the highly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) developed country Japan, Japanese people enroll in social media and evolve a new way of communicating with others based on the “virtual” social distance between them. Among social media, Twitter has been focusing on its strong power as the tool for political change recent years. While Twitter has of-expressed problems as well as the “traditional” social media, it is characterized by the limited number of characters, strong propagation and optional reciprocity. Those characteristics stimulate people’s communication online and bring about opportunities for social interaction and democratic dialogue. On the other hand, in the deluge of information, we need to nurture skills to utilize critical and rational way of thinking through dialogue not only between others also between themselves internally. This study explores characteristics of social media and differences between “traditional” social media and Twitter, and how the difference affects people’s information behavior in Japan.

  • From Vision to Transition : Exploring the Potential for Public Information Services to Facilitate Sustainable Urban Transport
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Policy initiatives to promote sustainable travel through the use of Internet based public information systems have increased during the last decade. Stockholm, in being one of the first cities in Europe to implement an Internet based service for facilitating sustainable travel is believed to be a good candidate for an analysis of key issues for developing sustainable travel planning services to the public.Aim: This thesis investigates the past development of two Stockholm based public information systems and their services in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service geared towards facilitating  environmentally sustainable travel planning through information and communications technology. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute to an understanding on how to better design and manage current and future attempts at facilitating sustainable travel planning services based on historical case studies.Approach: The thesis draws ideas from the concept of organizational responsiveness – an organization’s ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its internal and external stakeholders – in order to depict how well or not the two public information systems and their owners have adapted to established norms and values of their surroundings. Results: Overall, the findings from the historical case studies suggest that organizations attempting to provide sustainable travel planning to the public need to design and manage their systems in such a way that it responds to shifting demands on how to provide for information. Implementing and embedding new technologies involves complex processes of change both at the micro level – for users and practitioners of the service – and at the meso level for the involved public service organizations themselves. This condition requires a contextualist framework to analyze and understand organizational, contextual and cultural issues involved in the adoption of new technologies and procedures. Conclusions: The thesis concludes with a discussion on how the findings from the historical case studies may provide lessons for both current and future attempts at providing public information systems geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning to the public. Historical examples and issues concerning collective intelligence and peer to peer based forms of designing, producing and supervising public information services identified throughout the study are looked upon and discussed in terms of their possible role in increasing the potential for public information services to facilitate sustainable urban transport.

  • 2014

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The digital society of today is dramatically different than that of a decade ago. During the past decades computers have gone from being clearly visible and at the center of attention to becoming an integrated and omnipresent part of our everyday lives. Today, individuals are catching up on a reality where homes, workplaces and society to a large extent consist of microprocessors that collect, analyze and present information. With regards to news and information sharing, it may seem that the users, thanks to greater ability to choose content, hold the upper hand in this process. However, since these data are constantly collected and analyzed for various purposes by companies, for example in the media industry, the users’ choices may not be as unconditional as they may think they are. Using the Swedish media market as an example, this exploratory paper discusses the interdependency between people’s choices and the market-driven choices made by the media industry in relation to news, and the impact these choices may have on media consumption and the media market.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Convergence. The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8565 .- 1748-7382. ; 18:1, s. 85-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This feature article applies the concepts of ‘make-believe’ and ‘make-belief’ formulated by performance theorist, Richard Schechner, in a study of two role-play communities, Midian City and Gor in the online 3D environment Second Life. With make-believe fantasy role-play at their core, members of the two communities negotiate the social and political norms, the goals of the com- munity and as well as the boundaries of the virtual role-play. The article explores the innovative forms of interaction at play in these negotiation processes, using (cyber)ethnographic methods and the analysis of various textual sources, Goffman’s theories of social performance as well as various types of performance discussed by Schechner and Auslander. The innovative forms of interaction are analysed in the light of the new technology and as performances and make-belief strategies directed towards realizing performative utopias, towards influencing the direction in which leaders and residents of this digital context want the role-play to develop, and towards shaping the emer- gent social and cultural rules and the political framework of the role-play.

  • Deliberation or Updating? : The Case of Southern Stockholm Activists Online
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th European Conference on eGovernment. - Reading : ACI Academic Conferences International. - 9781908272416 - 9781908272423 ; , s. 691-697
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a (n)ethnographic inspired study of middle class activists in southern Stockholm, the aim is to understand contemporary political action and to discuss changing practices of participation in digital and late modernity. More specifically this paper addresses the Internet and its promise of deliberation. However instead of echoing techno-deterministic and optimist accounts of the Internet and online social networking affording a digital public sphere where deliberation can flourish, this paper argues that it is more accurate to understand the practices among the activists in southern Stockholm as updating. Updating is described here as a two-way practice,to be updated what is happening in your social networks as well as updating your social networks what is happening. These practices of updating are understood in light of late modern theories of reflexivity, identity negotiation and maintenance, practices that arguably are heightened in digital and networked societies. Hence to avoid determinism without resorting to the idea of technology as neutral, the paper is based in atechno-social dialectical understanding of our time as digital late modernity. The paper will end with a brief discussion of the implications of updating on political participation in digital late modernity. Even though not deliberation, practices of updating has consequences for participation and political action that perhaps could be considered positive and encouraging for democratic tradition in general.

  • Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures : Passionate Play
  • 2012. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How do gender and sexuality come to matter in online game cultures? Why is it important to explore "straight" versus "queer" contexts of play? And what does it mean to play together with others over time, as co-players and researchers?Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures is a book about female players and their passionate encounters with the online game World of Warcraft and its player cultures. It takes seriously women’s passions in games, and as such draws attention to questions of pleasure in and desire for technology. The authors use a unique approach of what they term a "twin ethnography" that develops two parallel stories. Sveningsson studies "straight" game culture, and makes explicit that which is of the norm by exploring the experiences of female gamers in a male-dominated gaming context. Sundén investigates "queer" game culture through the queer potentials of mainstream World of Warcraft culture, as well as through the case of a guild explicitly defined as LGBT.Academic research on game culture is flourishing, yet feminist accounts of gender and sexuality in games are still in the making. Drawing on feminist notions of performance, performativity and positionality, as well as the recent turn to affect and phenomenology within cultural theory, the authors develop queer, feminist studies of online player cultures in ways that are situated and embodied.

  • New Demands on Editorial Leadership: Perceived Changes in Swedish Newspaper Management
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: OBS - Observatorio. - 1646-5954. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Last decades development of news production has accentuated the need for increased managerial skills among editorial leaders. This need is followed by discursive notions connecting management levels across sectors, also the sector of news production. The managerial ideology features globalization of values and economy in the labour market, as well as in the area of communication, and promotes streamlining of organizational models in line with a business thinking common to several industries. This kind of management ideology has implications for all levels of news work and, above all, emphasizes audience orientation to a further extent than before. Our article focuses on how editorial leaders in Sweden perceive their own role as leaders to be changing and why. It does so by drawing empirical support from a mixed methods design of three surveys of editors-in-chief in Sweden, conducted in 2005, 2010, and 2011. The result reveals that editorial leaders are strongly embracing values characterised by managerialism by bringing the key values of profit, efficiency and leadership into the newsroom. They also perceive their managerial influence to have increased in the newsroom. As this kind of leadership is rather new to Scandinavian news media, the article discusses what kind of implications this new form of leadership may have for news organizations in the facing of new challenges.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Communication Theory. - : Oxford University Press. - 1050-3293 .- 1468-2885. ; 22:3, s. 299-318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We call for a fundamental restruc turing of research paradigms in geography and media/communication studies to form a bridge between core concerns of the 2 disciplines. This endeavor responds to contemporary historical changes: mediated/mediatized mobility, technological convergence, interactivity, new communication interfaces, and the automation of surveillance. Long-standing concern with a set of issues we call representations, textures, structures, and connections provides a foundation for this interdisciplinary bridge. Integrating these concerns would produce a semi autonomous field, manifested through collaborations between geographers and media theorists.

  • The Encapsulated vs. the Cosmopolitan Self? : Towards a Phenomenological Understanding of Mediatized Communication and Complicit Surveillance
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mediatization refers to a meta-process whereby social life in its totality is (re)embedded in and saturated with mediated processes. This paper addresses the relationship between two theoretically diverging, yet socially intertwined, realms pertaining to various mediatization patterns: cosmopolitanism and surveillance. Mediatization implies increasing opportunities for ‘extending the self’, experienced in terms of mediated proximity, immediacy and boundary transgression – ultimately sustaining a more cosmopolitan outlook of the world. Yet, mediatization also brings growing opportunities for securitization, boundary control and social encapsulation, on behalf of societal institutions as well as individuals and groups. Contemporary forms and extensions of surveillance and cosmopolitanism are increasingly interwoven through the meta-process of mediatization, most recently the social saturation of converging ‘social’ media. This paper suggests that phenomenology, as a heuristic tool, offers a well-contextualized and grounded socio-cultural perspective to grasp the everyday dimensions and subjective moral positionalities ensuing from increased mediatization and related openings and closures

  • 2010

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ECREA 2014 Lisboa - Communication for empowerment: citizens, markets, innovations. ; , s. 28-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of social media applications, such as blogs, Facebook and Twitter, has offered new participatory opportunities to everyday media users. In some respects, this also marks a transformation of public space, as the broadcasting era’s “audiences” nowadays also can take on the role as participating “co-creators”. Or to put it slightly differently: Contemporary media landscape allows for new forms of coexistence between producer and user generated content. For traditional media companies, this transformation has brought both challenges and opportunities. User generated content has always played a part in media production, but the current media situation has certainly made it a more salient feature. Among online newspapers, specifically, the new opportunities to include users’ participatory practices have taken different forms. For instance, they nowadays allow for convenient Facebook-liking and users linking blog posts to articles. They also spend both time and energy on making it easier for readers to get in touch with them in order to provide pictures, information, corrections, etc. Within this context of offering new, participatory opportunities to the previous “readers”, online newspapers have also come to adapt to and develop on one specifically salient strategy: To allow readers/users to comment on articles online. Media research has already paid attention to user comments as a participatory practice. These studies have typically looked into what technological features for participation that are offered and how they enable and limit users’ participatory practices (cf. Domingo et al., 2008; Hermida & Thurman, 2008). In this paper, we take on a slightly different approach. Firstly, the paper looks into the conditions for participation in terms of topics: What content are users allowed to comment on? How do content characteristics differ between news that are made available and news that are withheld from comments? After having mapped these conditions for participation we – secondly –analyze how users actually navigate within this (conditioned) space: What news are they interested in commenting on? How does commenting vary between different kinds of articles? These questions are answered by help of an analysis of 1.100 news items and their adjacent user interface in an online news site (affiliated with a professionally produced, local newspaper). In terms of methodology we apply quantitative content analysis. Our analysis reveals that the participatory space offered to the readers is geared towards light news, whereas users themselves have clear preferences for commenting news concerning changes in their local environment, about general national politics and welfare issues. The paper concludes with a discussion on potential explanations as to why this discrepancy exists and it also further reflects on its potential implications for users’ participatory practices.

  • Alternativ television : former av kritik i konstnärlig TV-produktion
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses social critique, communication critique and aestheticalcritique in television produced by artists. Theoretically it draws on researchon alternative media, TV studies, especially genre analysis and narratology, and media aesthetics. It conducts a text-production study of three examplesof alternative television from the period 2004-2008: ContemporaryArt Center TV (CAC TV): A show produced by the CAC in Vilnius, Lithuaniaand aired on a commercial TV-channel; Good TV who aired video art ona local public access channel in Stockholm, Sweden; and Candyland TV, apirate transmission from an art gallery in central Stockholm.Empirically it builds on TV-texts, web sites and documents, as well asinterviews with participants. Through a study of form and stylistics, relationto conventional genres and modes of narration, it engages in a discussionabout the features of a critical, alternative media text. The study shows how these televisions work in a tradition of alternativetelevision and connects them to tactics and aesthetical forms as found inhistorical examples, but also how this type of formalist media critiquemight inform an understanding of alternative media. From the analysis ofrelations between social and formalist aspects of alternative television, adistinction between alternative as ”alternative worldview” and as ”alternativeexpressions” is suggested, a distinction that contributes to the developmentof theory in the study of alternative media.

  • Contribution or Constrain? Audience Interaction in Swedish Online Newspapers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Asian journal of humanities and social studies. - 2321-2799. ; 1:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A focus on audience interaction in online news media has increased rapidly during the past years. Online news media offer their audience several opportunities of interaction, for example, by submitting comments on articles or sharing pictures and videos. In addition, audience interaction has emerged as a fast growing research field: the motives for embracing online audience interaction have been analyzed and the kind of interactive opportunities offered by the news media has been mapped. Also, the question of whether audience interaction really contributes or rather constrains professional journalism has been vividly discussed. This study relates to the latter perspective as it examines professional journalists’ views on audience interaction. By focusing on the case of Swedish newspaper journalists, this study investigates how audience interaction is perceived to impact professional standards and to what extent such interaction is believed to be beneficial or rather an obstacle for journalism. Based on a representative survey of Swedish journalists, conducted in 2011-2012, and a survey of journalists working at local morning papers in Sweden, conducted in 2009, the analysis reveals certain dividing lines in media practitioners’ attitudes to audience interaction.

  • Ingår i: Bergström, A. och Ohlsson, J. (red.) En region för alla?. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 9789189673298 ; , s. 187-199
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • From broadsheet to tabloid: Content changes in Swedish newspapers in the light of a shrunken size
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: OBS - Observatorio. - 1646-5954. ; 7:4, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During early 2000s the newspaper market in Northern Europe has been characterized by a trend of format changes as many broadsheets have chosen to adapt to the tabloid format. Similar tendencies have also emerged in other Western countries, making it a transnational phenomenon. Critics have argued that a shrunken size impacts the content towards increased tabloidization, inclining a connection between page size and news content where broadsheet and tabloid format require different kinds of journalism. This study thus aims at analysing whether it is possible to detect such an increased tabloidization in relation to the resize of newspapers. Using the theoretical concept of tabloidization the study takes off in a content analysis of Swedish dailies that changed format during early 2000s. Comparisons are made with newspapers that did not undergo such transition as means of determining whether any detected changes are explained by the actual format change or rather effects of other factors. The study focuses on news content published in 1990, 2000, and 2010, and it reveals that the format itself only has a minor influence on journalism as all newspapers show similar signs of increased tabloidization during this period.

  • JOURNALISM MEETS MANAGEMENT: Changing Leadership in Swedish News Organizations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journalism Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1751-2786 .- 1751-2794. ; 7:6, s. 705-719
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of news production over the last decade has accentuated the negotiation between two forces of change: professional discourse and managerial discourse. The first characterizes journalistic identity by normative ideals and serves to legitimize journalists as an autonomous and self-regulating group. Managerial discourse, on the other hand, expresses the globalization of values and economy in the labour market, as well as in the area of communication, streamlining organizational models, and suggesting a business thinking common to several industries, in addition to an evolving view of the individual as an entrepreneur. Managerialism has implications for all levels of news work and, above all, emphasizes audience orientation, as the will of the audience becomes imperative. It promotes a form of leadership rather new to Scandinavian news organizations by strongly bringing the key values of profit and efficiency to the negotiating table. This article focuses on the constant negotiation between discourses by drawing empirical support from three survey studies of editors-in-chief and journalists in Sweden. It describes how editors-in-chief perceive their own role to be changing and why, and attempts to relate the new forms of leadership to current professional developments in journalism.

  • Maintaining Power by Guarding the Gates: Journalists' Perceptions of Audience Participation in Online Newspapers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journalism and Mass Communication. - 2160-6579. ; 3:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Focus on audience participation in online news media has increased rapidly in recent years. Online newspapers offer their audience several opportunities to participate, for example by submitting comments on articles or uploading pictures/videos. Audience participation has also emerged as a fast growing research field; the motives for focusing on audience participation have been analyzed and the kind of participatory opportunities that news media offers the audience have been mapped. Also, questions on whether audience participation should be regarded an advantage or disadvantage to professional journalism has been discussed. This study relates to the latter perspective as it examines media practitioners´ perceptions of audience participation. By focusing on the case of Swedish newspaper journalists this study analyzes how audience participation is perceived to affect journalistic work and to what extent such participation is believed to benefit journalism. Based on a representative survey of Swedish journalists, conducted in 2011-2012, and a survey of journalists working at three local morning papers in Sweden, conducted in 2009, the analyses reveal a rather ambivalence attitude to audience participation among the journalistic corps.

  • Where the (inter)action is: Journalists' and the audiences' social media use
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Future of Journalism 2013, 11–13 september, Cardiff, UK.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The on-going social media hype is based on a presumption that social media will change journalism profoundly, not least in the relations to the audience. From a different point of view, social media are considered as important platforms for journalist–audience interaction but also for giving the audience more influence over media content. This paper examines the journalists’ and the publics’ use of social media, and their views on journalist–audience dialogue and interaction. The findings show that the journalists most active in social media are also more audience orientated. Still, most journalists are not very active in social media and hold a sceptical view towards audience adaption. The public is positive to journalists’ engagement, but the level of activity is much lower than among journalists. When analysing the usage and views in different groups, we find that that the possibilities for journalist–audience interaction are still rare. Age seems to be the most important factor explaining use, which means that journalists can preferably interact with young people, a group which in turn is least oriented towards news journalism. Thus, social media do not contribute to the shift of power between producers and users. The study draws on two statistically representative large-N postal surveys collected in 2011/2012: The Swedish Journalist Survey and the Swedish National SOM Survey. The two representative sets of data provide a unique opportunity to analyse social media as a platform for journalist–audience interaction.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: A Companion to Reality Television. - Hoboken : Wiley-Blackwell. - 9780470659274 ; , s. 345-366
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of ordinary people plays a key role the analytical reflections about the genre of reality TV, in all its diversity and hybridity, where this concept is used to capture the presence of this virtually ungraspable category of human subjects that features so dominantly in these reality TV practices. This article focuses on the concept of ordinary people itself, and analyze its discursive construction. Apart from investigating the nature of the articulations of ordinary people in reality TV, this chapter poses the question how the articulation of the concept of ordinary people contributes to a set of power struggles in reality TV and in society in general, which are focussed on the (de-)validation of ordinary people as relevant societal actors. Behind this question lurks the idea that reality TV is one of the many symbolic battlegrounds for the democratic struggle about the (increased) equality between societal classes, and between societal elites and non-elites. Through this analysis we can see the simultaneity of the articulations of ordinary people-as-lower-class and ordinary people-as-non-elite offering two sets of repertoires which are invoked, sometimes one after the other, sometimes together, cross-feeding each other, contradicting each other, strengthening each other, in order to give meaning to the signifier ordinary people.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Convergence. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8565 .- 1748-7382. ; 19:3, s. 287-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article aims to provide a more historically grounded approach to the relationship between communication and participation, by distinguishing different waves of media democratization. The article first discusses the concept of participation and some of its complexities, and then sketches a series of intense moments of participation in and through the media in (mainly the second half) the 20th and the 21st century. At the same time, care is taken not to organize a linear-historical narrative, keeping in mind that the history of the democratization of Western societies and their media spheres is characterized by a series of continuities and discontinuities, dead ends and sedimented practices. Despite these ever-present fluctuations, the article argues that we can still see that structures, cultural resources and subjective dispositions have over time been geared more towards participation and equality, also within the media sphere.

  • Mediatized interdependency : Mediated interaction between journalists and politicians on Twitter
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Rethinking the Mediatization of Politics.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of social media raises new questions concerning the relationship between journalists and politicians and between news media and political communication. A key trajectory in the relationship between news media institutions and political institutions is related to the changing practices of media production. The interconnections between journalists and politicians have been increasingly complex after the rise of political communication on and through social media platforms. Both politicians and journalists become dependent on factors that pertain to the communicative infrastructure and practices of social media. For example, communication on Twitter is characterised by high velocity, immediacy, and the public interactivity between politicians and journalists. This paper suggest that power relations between journalists and political actors are most fruitfully explored from the perspective of mediatized interdependency, where both parties are reliant on each other in order to get their work done properly. For example, the relations between politicians and journalists on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, could be understood as negotiation (Berkowitz, 2009) or as a struggle (Broersma et. al., 2013). However, the struggle is no longer so much about what ‘could’ be published, but about an on-going discursive battle that takes place in the digital public space. Political actors often make official statements through Twitter, where they ‘correct’ publications they consider problematic. When doing so, they become media producers, which, in turn, use journalism as source and vehicle for promoting their own agenda. Consequently, media logic in the digital era is not restricted to the ground principles of journalistic work, but to a much broader set of opportunities, available to political and commercial institutions in society as well as to the broader public. In order to empirically assess the concept of mediatized interdependency the paper draws on several examples of politicians- journalists interactivity on Twitter.

  • Remapping Journalism History:Development of the Press in the Swedish Empire and Its Former Colonies Finland, Estonia and Livonia until the Early 20th Century
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Medien & Zeit. - Wien : Arbeitskreis für Historische Kommunikationsforschung (AHK). - 0259-7446. ; 26:4, s. 25-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With history writing in general, press history is often linked to the framework of the nationstate. Such nationalist approaches may, however, lead to a fragmented view of history. We should remember that many current European nation states have fairly short histories, and, even old kingdoms, such as Sweden, have changed shape several times. During the 17th and 18th century, the Swedish Empire included Finland, Estonia, Livonia, Ingria, Pomerania, Wismar and Bremen/Verden, and the previously Danish areas in the south and northwest. Later, Sweden even had small colonies in Africa and the Caribbean. The empire, however, began to disintegrate during the Great Nordic War. During the 18th century Finland, Estonia and Livonia belonged to the Russian Empire. My purpose is to provide an overview of the development of the press in the Swedish Empire and the 19th century Finland, Estonia and Livonia, and discuss limitations of national perspectives.
