  • Big Data and Journalism: Epistemology, expertise, economics, and ethics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Digital Journalism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2167-0811 .- 2167-082X. ; 3:3, s. 447-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Big data is a social, cultural, and technological phenomenon—a complex amalgamation of digital data abundance, emerging analytic techniques, mythology about data-driven insights, and growing critique about the overall consequences of big-data practices for democracy and society. While media and communication scholars have begun to examine and theorize about big data in the context of media and public life broadly, what are the particular implications for journalism? This article introduces and applies four conceptual lenses—epistemology, expertise, economics, and ethics—to explore both contemporary and potential applications of big data for the professional logic and industrial production of journalism. These distinct yet inter-related conceptual approaches reveal how journalists and news media organizations are seeking to make sense of, act upon, and derive value from big data during a time of exploration in algorithms, computation, and quantification. In all, the developments of big data potentially have great meaning for journalism’s ways of knowing (epistemology) and doing (expertise), as well as its negotiation of value (economics) and values (ethics). Ultimately, this article outlines future directions for journalism studies research in the context of big data.

  • 2017
• Participatory journalism - the (r)evolution that wasn't. Content and user behavior in Sweden 2007-2013.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1083-6101. ; 20:3, s. 295-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A contemporary debate in media studies concerns participation and empowerment, and to what extent digital media shift power to the citizens. This study assesses the long-term viability of participatory journalism using Swedish content and user data. Inclusion of comments and blog-links on news sites increased from 2007 to 2010, and decreased rather dramatically from 2011 onward. Posting user comments or writing blogs have never been activities that have appealed to a majority of the Swedes. Participatory journalism seems to have decreasing value to producers and little appeal to users. A shift in how power is distributed in the public sphere is absent. This is not primarily a problem of reluctant producers but, more importantly, a lack of interest from users.

  • "Framtiden tillhör informatörerna” : samhällsinformationens formering i Sverige 1965–1975
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is about the formation of governmental information in Sweden during the period 1965 to 1975. During this period information related issues were high up on the political agenda, in Sweden and internationally. I argue that the period is of particular interest in order to understand the impact and development of governmental information in Sweden, even for our time. One overreaching research question has guided this study: What ideas and practices characterized how and why the state disseminated information to the public? The thesis uses four tensions to study the formation of governmental information in Sweden during the late 1960s and early 1970s: (1) information as a solution – information as a problem, (2) dissemination of information – control over information, (3) information through mass communication – information through interpersonal dialogue, and (4) governmental information – commercial information. These tensions draw theoretically from John Durham Peters’ notions of communication. The thesis uses strands from three research fields: PR-history, cultural histories of media, and digital humanities. The four papers use different theoretical perspectives in order to shed new light on of the formation of governmental information in Sweden. Adding to that, and to theoretically tie the papers together, the thesis presents an overarching network perspective with a special focus on conceptual history as a means to better understand how governmental information was discussed as well as practiced. Different methods are used to study the formation of governmental information. The latter is partly because of the political issue’s porous boundaries and fragmented-oriented character, and partly due to the lack of previous research with a problematizing and historical approach to governmental information in Sweden. The thesis combines qualitative and quantitative methods to study different aspects how the state communicated with the public. This dissertation presents new findings about the formation of governmental information during the period 1965 to 1975. One regards the different intersections of governmental information. It shows that the production and dissemination of information from agencies to citizens was far from “pure” governmental information, and rather entangled with various actors from industry, academy and civil society. A second finding concerns the language of governmental information. Here, the dissertation shows – through large-scale digital text methods – how the concept of “information” exploded in usages from the 1960s and onwards, and how “information” as a discursive element infiltrated a growing number of political topics from the same period and onwards. A third finding centers on the media of governmental information. One result shows how broadly academics and bureaucrats defined the concept of media in relation to the practice of governmental information. All kinds of media devices, and not only the traditional news media, were considered important for the purpose of disseminating information on large scale to the public. Lastly, this dissertation reveals governmental information as without guaranties. Overall it shows how information from state agencies to citizens was generated through various conflicting tensions that have to be addressed, but without any hope of finding a balance free from communication problems. These problems tend to reoccur in different settings through history, also visible today. This result should however not be regarded as a pessimistic standpoint, rather it calls for modesty in terms of communication in general, and governmental information in particular.

  • Slutna rum och öppna landskap: Den sydsvenska SOM-undersökningen 2015 : SOM-institutets rapport nr 69
  • 2017

  • Sprickor i fasaden
  • 2018

  • What’s left of the radical left online? : Absence of communication, political vision, and community in autonomist web milieus in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: New Media and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 1461-4448 .- 1461-7315. ; 20:1, s. 384-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents and discusses results from a study of radical left-wing activism online carried out by the Swedish Media Council, a report that suggested that the Internet (i.e. the web, web 2.0, and social media) is not a prioritized arena for propaganda and recruitment for the radical left in Sweden. The purpose of this article is to re-evaluate some of these findings and add to the discussion on online activity and connectivity in political communication online, as well as to problematize simplified notions of radicalization and recruitment to pro-violent groups. Based on a hermeneutic inquiry regarding modes of communication, representations of political visions, and community, the article shows how the sites and groups studied favor one-way communication before interactivity, that political visions are limited to short-term goals in the immediate future, and that they give very little information about their activist activities to recruit supporters. © The Author(s) 2016

  • FASHIONABLE POLITICS The discursive construction of ethical consumerism in corporate communications, news media, and social media
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates the discursive construction of ethical consumerism – a notion that encompasses both ‘conscious’ consumption choices and responsible’ corporate activities – in mediated discourses about fashion and clothing consumption in Sweden. Drawing on the discourse-historical approach within critical discourse analysis, the study provides an empirical examination of discursive elements in corporate communications, newspapers, and social media, which construct the market as the best solution to social injustice and climate change. The analysis focuses on how specific identities or practices are established as ethical, authentic, and legitimate, and investigates both the promises and the limits of discursive ethical consumerism in late capitalism. The thesis shows how corporate and journalistic discourses can be depoliticising, as they focus on consensus and collaboration rather than on conflicts of interest, and on individual responsibility and consumption choices rather than on political policy. However, the convergence of consumption and politics also becomes highly political when these issues are discussed by the audience. The approach places the thesis within a tradition of critical studies of branded politics and the neoliberalisation of contemporary societies, while still taking the reflexive awareness of politically motivated consumers into account.

  • Reinforcing spirals at work? Mutual influences between selective news exposure and ideological leaning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 34:2, s. 159-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of partisan news sources has raised concerns that people will increasingly select attitude-consistent information, which might lead to increasing political polarization. Thus far, there is limited research on the long-term mutual influences between selective exposure and political attitudes. To remedy this, this study investigates the reciprocal influences between selective exposure and political attitudes over several years, using a three-wave panel survey conducted in Sweden during 2014–2016. More specifically, we analyse how ideological selective exposure to both traditional and online news media influences citizens’ ideological leaning. Findings suggest that (1) people seek-out ideologically consistent print news and online news and (2) such attitude-consistent news exposure reinforces citizens’ ideological leaning over time. In practice, however, such reinforcement effects are hampered by (3) relatively low overall ideological selective exposure and a (4) significant degree of cross-cutting news exposure online. These findings are discussed in light of selective exposure theory and the reinforcing spirals model.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Digital Journalism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2167-0811 .- 2167-082X. ; 3:1, s. 19-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In contemporary journalism, there is a need for better conceptualizing the changing nature of human actors, nonhuman technological actants, and diverse representations of audiences—and the activities of news production, distribution, and interpretation through which actors, actants, and audiences are inter-related. This article explicates each of these elements—the Four A’s—in the context of cross-media news work, a perspective that lends equal emphasis to editorial, business, and technology as key sites for studying the organizational influences shaping journalism. We argue for developing a sociotechnical emphasis for the study of institutional news production: a holistic framework through which to make sense of and conduct research about the full range of actors, actants, and audiences engaged in cross-media news work activities. This emphasis addresses two shortcomings in the journalism studies literature: a relative neglect about (1) the interplay of humans and technology, or manual and computational modes of orientation and operation, and (2) the interplay of editorial, business, and technology in news organizations. This article’s ultimate contribution is a cross-media news work matrix that illustrates the interconnections among the Four A’s and reveals where opportunities remain for empirical study.

  • Ingår i: New Media and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-4448 .- 1461-7315. ; 20:8, s. 2745-2763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through an analysis of relevant literature and open-ended survey responses from 2501 Singaporeans, this article proposes a conceptual framework to understand how individuals authenticate the information they encounter on social media. In broad strokes, we find that individuals rely on both their own judgment of the source and the message, and when this does not adequately provide a definitive answer, they turn to external resources to authenticate news items.

  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 30:2, s. 137-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reader comments have been a growing part of user-generated content on news sites for some 10years now. Although activity is still relatively low, interest among the public is generally high; however, journalists still show a general resistance to audience participation. The aim of our study is to examine attitudes to reader comments from two different perspectives: the public’s and the journalists’. The findings derive from one Swedish survey from each group, both of which had a response rate of about 60%. The main result shows that a large proportion of the public does not have any opinion on reader comments, but when they do, support is widespread. Furthermore, journalists have stronger opinions and are rather critical towards reader comments.

  • Sensemaking of emerging technologies in news work: Audience-centric engagement, collaboration culture and platform counterbalancing
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the 69th Annual International Communication Association (ICA) Conference, Washington DC, 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using a sensemaking approach, this two-and-a-half-year longitudinal study examines how emerging technology has been appropriated and enacted in the salient case of news publishers. This article focuses on editorial analytics, automation, social media platforms, and mobile communication applications, and investigates how they influence the convergent news activities of newsworkers in two types of Singapore newsrooms: 1.) a digital-first legacy newspaper, and 2.) an independent digital-only news organization. The article uses the Infotendencias Group’s (2012) analytical framework and its four dimensions of news convergence: i). Business, ii). Technological, iii). Contents, and iv). Professional. Additionally, the article proposes a new fifth dimension: v). Audience-centric Engagement, based on the concept of “measurable journalism” (Carlson, 2018), analyzing how its actors influence the relationship between newsrooms and their audiences. The article builds on two rounds of in-depth interviews. The first round, conducted from end-2015 to mid-2016, involved 13 newsworkers. In 2018, four newsworkers from the first round were interviewed again. This essay leads to three main conclusions: 1.) the growing significance of audience-centric engagement, 2.) an emergence of a collaboration culture, and 3.) the salience of platform counterbalancing. Importantly, audience-centric engagement practices are observed in all four dimensions of convergent news activities of each news organization.

  • What is Feminist Media Archaeology?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Communication +1. - Amherst, MA, United States : University of Massachusetts Amherst. - 2380-6109. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a fairly recent blog post, Jussi Parikka discusses how media archaeology can be criticized for being a “boy’s club”. In the introduction of this text, he writes: One of the set critiques of media archaeology is that it is a boys' club. That is a correct evaluation in so many ways when one has a look at the topics as well as authors of the circle of writers broadly understood part of 'media archaeology'. I make the same argument for instance in What is Media Archaeology?, but there is also something else that we need to attend to.

There is however a danger that the critique also neglects the multiplicity inherent in the approach. For sure, there are critical points to be made in so many aspects of Kittler's and others' theoretical work, but at the same time it feels unfair to neglect the various female authors and artists at the core of the field. In other words, the critique often turns a blind eye to the women who are actively involved in media archaeology. Let's not write them out too easily. Parikka then goes on to briefly introduce several female researchers and artists who are active in the media archaeological field. These are women who are, in different ways, doing media archaeology. This is of course an important issue – skewed representations or lopsided citation practices are never good – and the contributions of these researchers are significant and important. However, we could also argue that there is an important difference between the body of work being done by women and, what we may call, feminist media archaeology. There can, of course, be overlaps between these two ways of representing feminist interests in media archaeology, but for feminist theorizing and practising to truly have an impact, we have to ask ourselves what is feminist media archaeology? By looking for empirical gaps and putting questions of, for example, design, power, infrastructure and benefit, to the fore we can shine a different light on the material-discursive genealogy of digital culture, still very much in the vein of media archaeological endeavors. What we suggest is quite simple – a transdisciplinary approach which emphasizes “the unity of intellectual frameworks beyond the disciplinary perspectives [which] points toward our potential to think in terms of frameworks, concepts, techniques, and vocabulary that we have not yet imagined”. As such, we want to take an exploratory tactic to the question posed in the title of this paper. We do not intend to provide a single nor definite answer – rather we want to think with media archaeology and feminism together, seeking to raise other questions in order to find dynamic parallels and crosscurrents.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media has provided new opportunities for academics to disseminate their research results. They allow users to upload academic papers and links to published papers, track demand for their published articles, and engage in professional discussions with other users (Meishar-Tal and Efrat Pieterse, 2017). This paper aimed to study the use of academic and non-academic profiling sites and platforms amongst scholars at Chalmers University of Technology. We were also interested in the purpose that scholars had for using these platforms. Furthermore, using data about people who register in Mendeley as readers of papers, this article explored diverse types of users of scientific papers by scholars at Chalmers. These gave us insight into the different social media platforms being used, the purpose of use, the readers’ status and their topics of interest at Chalmers. Furthermore, this helped us to provide statistics on how scholarly publications at Chalmers are used for scientific, educational, or other professional purposes.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ISCONTOUR 2018 Tourism Research Perspectives. - 9783746091679 ; , s. 373-378
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media and mobile-based applications act as an increasingly critical source of experience value creation in tourism and nature-based tourism, as confirmed by the most recent trends in the industry. Although being one of the most popular mobile-based social media, Instagram is still underrepresented in value creation research, and no study has been conducted specifically in nature-based tourism. Moreover, current research on value lack of interpretive methodologies able to grasp the complexity of experience value creation from a phenomenological point of view. This research aims at tackling these gaps by conducting an in-depth investigation on experience value creation on Instagram in nature-based tourism. A combination of different types of qualitative data, obtained through a participatory netnography, will be collected on Instagram, and consequently triangulated and analyzed by means of grounded theory. While assessing the depth of value creation emerging from personal, elicited tourist narratives, in a way not seen yet in similar studies, the results are argued to expand the theoretical understanding of experience value creation in nature-based tourism and service research.

  • Using Social Media
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The rise of social media platforms has changed how people interact. Mobile technologies with built-in, high-quality cameras offer new possibilities for people to document and share their everyday activities. Many consider these interaction-mediating devices to be important tools for facilitating people’s social life through use of social media. The aim of this thesis is to describe what constitutes social media use in a world of smartphones with cameras, why and how social media use is meaningful as a category of activity, and to contribute with new insights on how social media skills and perceptions change as practices and platforms develop. Drawing upon data collected in 2012 and 2017, this thesis provides empirical findings from four papers. By returning to the same informants, conducting stimulated recall interviews five years apart, the data provides insights on how social media use has developed over time. In this thesis, social media use is understood as the social practices that people engage in when they plan, produce, post, and take part in social media activities. As levels of engagement in social media vary from active involvement, such as producing and interacting with content, to more passive ways of planning and monitoring social media, a revised conceptualization of social media use is argued. The focus of this thesis is on a specific and central part of social media; social photography (i.e. how people produce, share and interact around pictures) in social media, especially through the use of the social photo sharing application Instagram. When engaging in social photography activities, users rely upon modal, technical and social affordances and develop particular idioms of practices. Each social media platform engenders its own expressions and idioms, and its own platform vernacular, which users learn in order to interact on it fluently. Users develop new skills through social participation within their community of practice on one or more platforms. As they learn how to engage in social practices, developing skills for particular idioms of practice and platform vernaculars, they become competent members of these social media communities. Based on data collected five years apart, this thesis highlights that despite many relatively stable aspects to the ways that users approach social media, four prominent categories of factors have had an impact on changes to social media use over time: changes in life and time management, changes in technical capabilities, changes in privacy preferences, and changes in modes of engagement.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Media Industries Journal. - : University of Michigan Library. - 2373-9037. ; 4:2, s. 22-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First cut from frozen lakes and later manufactured on an industrial scale, ice was, in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, big business. The arrival of domestic refrigeration spelled the end of this industry. The rise and fall of the ice industry offers lessons to the modern newspaper industry, which faces a similar threat. Drawing an analogy between the ice and newspaper industries in terms of innovation and organizational learning, we look at how both are/were hampered by investment in technology and identity, and affected by devolution of control into consumers’ hands. Based on this, we suggest that the newspaper industry would benefit from links with heterogeneous rather than isomorphic partners to counterbalance routines that obstruct change, and just as refrigeration forced a reconceptualization of the concrete “ice” into the abstract “cold,” newspaper organizations can re-imagine themselves around the services and values they provide, rather than the product of “news.”

  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing ; Nordic Contributions in IS Research. - Cham : Springer. - 1865-1348 .- 1865-1356. - 9783319646947
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this theoretical and argumentative paper we analyse the implications of social buttons as used on social networking sites (SNSs). Although social buttons have been around for many years, there is still a scarcity of research on their effects despite their pivotal functions for the success of SNSs. We conceptualise these buttons as Like buttons, Share buttons and Follow buttons and analyse them and their associated actions through the lens of social capital theory. Our analysis shows how the clicker and the clickee are affected differently through these social buttons, and in the process, we also propose seven concepts to describe the social implications of these buttons. Having discussed these concepts, we conclude the paper by offering three contributions; a) the distinguishing between the clicker and the clickee; b) the subtle but yet distinct differences between buttons, and; c) a set of ways through which social buttons become productive.

  • Researching Intimacy through Social Media: A cross-platform approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Medie Kultur: The Journal of Communication Research. ; 32:60, s. 50-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of how to study the way people build intimacy and manage privacy through social media interaction. It explores the research design and methodology of a research project based on a multi-sited case study composed of three different social media platforms: Badoo, CouchSurfing, and Facebook. This cross-platform approach is useful to observe how intimacy is often negotiated across different platforms. The research project focuses on the cities of Leeds (UK) and Barcelona (Spain). In particular, this article discusses the methods used to recruit participants and collect data for that study - namely, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and user profiles analysis. This cross-platform approach and multi-method research design is helpful to investigate the nature of intimacy practices facilitated by social media at several levels: online/offline, across different platforms, among different types of relationships, within both new and existing relationships, and in different locations

  • Latent Groups in Online Communities: a Longitudinal Study in Wikipedia

  • Ingår i: Computer Supported Cooperative Work. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7551 .- 0925-9724. ; 27:1, s. 77-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on online communities has shown that content production involves manifest groups and latent users. This paper conceptualizes a related but distinct phenomenon of latent groups. We ground this contribution in a longitudinal study on the Finnish Wikipedia (2007–2014). In the case of experts working on content within their area of expertise, individuals can constitute a group that maintains itself over time. In such a setting, it becomes viable to view the group as an acting unit instead of as individual nodes in a network. Such groups are able to sustain their activities even over periods of inactivity. Our theoretical contribution is the conceptualization of latent groups, which includes two conditions: 1) a group is capable of reforming after inactivity (i.e., dormant), and 2) a group is difficult to observe to an outsider (i.e., non-manifest).

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ACME: An International E-Journal for Critical Geographies. - 1492-9732. ; 16:3, s. 548-575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The militarized response to the rhino poaching crisis in southern Africa exposes poachers to “fatal couplings of power and difference” (Gilmore 2002). While the racialized dimensions of this phenomenon are currently the subject of robust debate, this paper focuses on how race, gender, and sexuality are co-constructed in the anti-poaching discourse. Bringing the work of geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore into conversation with Frantz Fanon’s psycho-existential exposition of race, we read several campaign texts against their landscapes, revealing the role that gendered constructions of racial subjects play in justifying the extrajudicial killing of rhino poachers. We conclude that a geographic-linguistic approach to textual analysis usefully exposes the interconnectedness of gender, race, and sexuality at the heart of a modern conservationist campaign, and suggest that this framework complements queer geographic and intersectional approaches to racism.

  • Ingår i: The EU Mutual Learning Programme in Gender Equality, Women in the Media, France 12-13 November 2018. - Bryssel.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This comment paper on gender and media in Sweden was written in the context of The EU Mutual Learning Programme in Gender Equality, Women in the Media, Paris 12-13 November 2018. Besides the host country France, government representatives and independent experts from further 17 EU Member States participated in the event. The key focuses of the seminar were recent laws, policies and good practices of the French government and other stakeholders that address persistent under-representation and discrimination against women in all media professions, and the broader issue of gender stereotypes in media content, sexism, and sexist abuse. The French government has taken a transversal and pro-active approach across the relevant Ministries. The Swedish paper present recent developments in Sweden and explains why gender equality in the media is a matter of expanding freedom of expression. It also calls for the collection of comparable and consistent sex-disaggregated data about the media – otherwise, it is impossible to know if there is progress. it also suggests that media issues are promoted in global agendas. The publication is supported by the European Union Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020).

  • Ingår i: International journal of cultural studies. - London : Sage Publications. - 1367-8779 .- 1460-356X. ; 19:2, s. 177-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the internet and digital media technology increasingly central to practices around music, this shift is often seen as contributing to a networked music use characterized by individualism. Drawing on a focus group study with young adults in Stockholm and Moscow, this article argues, however, that digital music use today is shaped by discourses of difference, with gender a significant factor both in constructions of the ideal music and technology user, and in terms of musical influence and guidance. Taking into account contemporary research on new media technology, as well as feminist studies of technology and music, the article questions ideas of a neutral user of new music technologies, showing how the gendering of music and media technology can be seen as simultaneously context-bound and cutting across geographies.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Technological Forecasting and Social Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 141, s. 117-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Authors This paper aims to assess the degree to which sustainability-oriented dimensions are integrated within the public discourse on crowdfunding in social media. Utilizing Social Media Analytics (SMA), we track discussions on crowdfunding in user-generated content published in social media. Based on an empirical material of 141,754 user-generated content, we identify 308 entries (0.21 percent) explicitly or implicitly relating to sustainability and 80 percent of these 308 entries came from professional actors. In this material, 37 sustainability-oriented campaigns are identified and 26 of them (70 percent) received one entry. Taken together, this paper adds to previous literature by assessing and describing the seemingly minor role played by social media with regards to the interplay between crowdfunding and sustainability.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Filmicon: Journal of Greek Film Studies. - : Eurasia publications. - 2241-6692. ; :3, s. 32-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Popular geopolitics has recognized in popular culture a platform where geopolitical imaginations are created and discursive constructions of ‘self’ and ‘other’ take place. However, limited work has been done on the employment of specific methodological tools of Critical Discourse Analysis on popular culture texts. This article attempts a hands-on analysis on an episode of a popular product of Greek television fiction (Oi Aparadektoi), and constitutes a combination of theoretical discussion, on one hand, and data presentation and analysis, on the other. Building on a growing body of literature arguing in favor of popular culture’s value for study of politics, the main argument is that television fiction can, and should be, included in investigations of the (geo)politics of the contemporary world and the politics of (national) identity, while special focus is placed on how a discourse-oriented approach can be adopted for the study of products of television fiction.

  • How Do Social Media Users Link Different Types of Extreme Events to Climate Change? : A Study of Twitter During 2008–2017
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Extreme Events. - Singapore : World Scientific. - 2345-7376 .- 2382-6339. ; 06:02
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines how three types of extreme events (heat waves, droughts, floods) are mentioned together with climate change on social media. English-language Twitter use during 2008–2017 is analyzed, based on 1,127,996 tweets (including retweets). Frequencies and spikes of activity are compared and theoretically interpreted as reflecting complex relations between the extreme event factor (the occurrence of an extreme event); the media ecology factor (climate-change oriented statements/actions in the overall media landscape) and the digital action factor (activities on Twitter). Flooding was found to be by far the most tweeted of the three in connection to climate change, followed by droughts and heat waves. It also led when comparing spikes of activity. The dominance of floods is highly prevalent from 2014 onwards, triggered by flooding events (extreme event factor), the climate science controversy in US politics (media ecology factor) and the viral power of celebrities’ tweets (digital action factor).
