  • The effectiveness of using online education technologies in times of cascading crises: digital transformation of Ukrainian higher education
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Act Sustainable Research Conference, 11-18/11, 2022, Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Higher education in Ukraine is passing its matriculation exam. For the third year in a row, Ukraine has been actively developing and deploying online education technologies as a response to external shocks. The initial trigger was the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited opportunities for face-to-face interactions. During the pandemic, Ukrainian universities created their own online education system by testing various online educational technologies. These technologies became a solid base for the restoration of the educational process in Ukrainian universities after the start of military hostilities in early 2022, connecting staff and students who had to leave their homes to protect their lives from a constant threat. Aim The aim of our research project “The effectiveness of using online education technologies in times of cascading crises” is to investigate the experienced impact of the Covid 19 pandemic and war on teaching and learning in Ukrainian higher education. Methodology In the project's first stage, we conducted forty semi-structured interviews with top management, research and teaching staff, and students from different parts of Ukraine about their experiences of using digital technologies for teaching and learning. The interviews have been transcribed, translated from Ukrainian/Russian into English, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. Key results/conclusions At the conference, we will present some preliminary results about the challenges and opportunities of using digital technologies in times of war, providing suggestions for improvement of online educational technologies used in crisis situations.

  • Assessing user perceptions of the interplay between the sharing, access, platform and community- based economies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Information Technology and People. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0959-3845 .- 1758-5813. ; 33:3, s. 1037-1051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Digitally intermediated peer-to-peer exchanges have accelerated in occurrence, and as a consequence, they have introduced an increased pluralism of connotations. Accordingly, this paper aims to assess user perceptions of the interplay between the sharing, access, platform, and community-based economies.Design/methodology/approach: The sharing, access, platform, and community-based economies have been systematically tracked in the social media landscape using Social Media Analytics (SMA). In doing so, a total material of 62,855 publicly posted user-generated content concerning the four respective economies were collected and analyzed.Findings: Even though the sharing economy has been conceptually argued to be interlinked with the access, platform, and community-based economies, the empirical results of the study do not validate this interlinkage. Instead, the results regarding user perceptions in social media show that the sharing, access, platform, and community-based economies manifest as clearly separated.Originality/value: This paper contributes to existing literature by offering an empirical validation, as well as an in-depth understanding, of the sharing economy's interlinkage to other economies, along with the extent to which the overlaps between these economies manifest in social media.

  • “Just Google Translate It!” ICT Use of Migrant IT professionals for Mitigating Workplace Integration Challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AMCIS (Americas Conference on Information Systems), Minneapolis, MI, August 10-14.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IT professionals represent a growing group of highly educated migrants in different countries, yet research on their workplace integration is scarce. Applying a combined theoretical framework of Hofstede's culture dimensions and functional theory of language approach, this paper addresses the research need in investigating how migrant IT professionals to Sweden integrate into the workplace and the role of ICTs in mitigating integration challenges. Fifteen (15) interviews with IT professionals from India and Pakistan were analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results uncover migrants experiencing language barriers and cultural differences, which impede developing relationships with colleagues and career opportunities. Our findings indicate that although ICTs, primarily machine translation applications, are indispensable for supporting communication between migrants and locals, collegial support is still essential for managing intercultural interactions, contributing to migrants’ feelings of connectedness at work and a sense of belonging. Workplace inclusion and suggestions for practitioners are discussed.

  • Who are Metrics Team’s Stakeholders, What Do They Expect, and How to Communicate with Them? Conducting Stakeholder Mapping with Focus on Communication in Agile Software Development Organization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), SIGITPROJMGMT 17th International Research Workshop on Information Technology Project Management, Copenhagen, December 10, 2022-01-01.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As an increasing number of organizations create metrics teams, conducting stakeholder mapping is pivotal for identifying and analyzing metrics stakeholders’ expectations for reducing the risks of miscommunication and project failure. Further, though team-stakeholder communication is essential for successful collaboration, few studies focus on it in software measurement context. This case study seeks to identify and analyze metrics team’s stakeholders, with a special focus on communication challenges in team-stakeholder contacts. Inspired by Bryson's Basic Stakeholder Analysis Techniques and Mitchell, Agle, and Wood's theoretical model for stakeholder identification, a stakeholder mapping exercise was conducted using interactive workshops and follow-up interviews with 16 metrics team members and their stakeholders. The results illustrate the complexity of identifying stakeholders in agile organizations, the importance of developing a metrics culture, and enhancing transparency in team-stakeholder communication. The study aims to contribute to the development of stakeholder theory and offers insights into communication in software engineering context.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 42:s4, s. 152-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the dust of society-wide digitalisation settles, the search for meaningful technological encounters is becoming more urgent. While the Nordic countries embrace digitalisation, recent concerns regarding technology overuse have been gaining increased attention. This tendency is exemplified in practices of limiting digital use, called digital disengagement – an apparent paradox in Nordic societies where digital is the dominant paradigm. In this article, we explore the emergence of disconnection-centred devices called “dumbphones”, which cater to individuals wishing to escape hyperconnected lifestyles. Drawing on a new materialist perspective, we present a content analysis of dumbphones’ advertising material, followed by a collaborative autoethnographic study in which we replace our smartphones with dumbphones. We critically weigh the promises of the dumbphones against the actual experience of digital disengagement in Sweden. Our findings illustrate a struggle with digital technologies, even despite their absence, due to emerging workarounds and societal expectations of use.

  • Woman, Life, Freedom Global Revolts: Intersectional and Transnational Memetic Politics of Contemporary Social Movements and Activisms
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ATGender Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper-presentation explores the question of which unique characteristics of the recent Woman, Life, Freedom feminist revolts led it to become so globally viral. I argue that, among many factors, memes – or, more accurately, the memefication of contemporary social movements _– was a main reason. Memes are ubiquitous. They have shaped our worldviews and ways of being. They no longer exist only on our screens with cute cats and funny captions but have pervaded our everyday encounters with the world. Memes have been commodified by capitalist consumerism and populist aesthetics and instrumentalized through alt-right abstract eliminationism. Furthermore, they have become part of the politics and intersectional social movements. In this talk, I delve into the recent contemporary global social movements by focusing on their fundamentally memetic elements. I argue that the intersectional and memetic elements of these movements– such as the assemblies of marginalized, revolting bodies memeing themselves from TikTok to streets and back in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement– have been integral to their global virality and sociopolitical advancements. To contextualize, I first address some examples of meme pages on Instagram and Facebook to illustrate how today’s “digital junk” is not only deeply political but has become the core of the current feminist politics of transformation. Then, I elaborate on the key intersectional and memetic elements of mediated, audiovisual, and embodied protest performances from Jina Amini WLF protests across multiple social media platforms and every corner of the streets around the world, to highlight how these instances are transforming contemporary global social justice movements in the present era. Ultimately, I assert that we no longer have to “argue for” the importance of digital technologies (and memes in particular) in our politics and society; rather, we must come to terms with the fact that, from image macros to bodies in revolt, our world is increasingly an actualization of memetics as politics.

  • It’s not All Shiny and Glamorous: Loneliness and Fear of Missing Out among Digital Nomads
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 56th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term ‘digital nomad’ has gained popularity to describe professionals who work remotely from different locations facilitated by using information and communication technology. This study explores the interaction between digital nomadism and loneliness, digital nomads’ coping mechanisms to fight loneliness (with a special focus on social media use), as well as the phenomenon of fear of missing out (FoMO). Digital nomads who often experience isolation may turn to the use of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram to keep in contact with family and friends and other social media like Facebook groups, Slack, and MeetUp to meet new people. However, intensive use of social media can generate FoMO. By using 15 in-depth interviews, this paper aims to explore loneliness and FoMO as issues that might negatively intersect with digital nomads’ wellbeing, thus spotlighting some of the hidden dark sides of digital nomadism that go too often unnoticed.

  • Re-shaped by mobile technologies’ disruption : the videogame industry in Turkey
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Studies on Marketing Insights. - Antalya, Turkey : Akdeniz University. - 2667-6591. ; 4:1, s. 44-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - In this paper, we investigate the business disruption effects of mobile technologies for the videogame industry in Turkey. Previous research shows that before mobile gaming became prevalent globally, Turkish videogame industry was extremely small and lacked any success stories for either console or PC platforms.Design/methodology/approach - To capture the nuances of this disruptive transition, we performed structured interviews with industry experts and analyzed prominent discussion forums. We especially focused on answering the following questions: (1) how prepared were Turkish videogame development companies in handling the mobile disruptive change; (2) what kind of transformations they experienced in their business plans and practices; (3) how the disruption affected the way they viewed their customer base; and (4) what future disruptions they expect in their industry.Findings - Analysis of interview and discussion data revealed some recurring themes that we discussed in detail: (1) ability to handle disruptive change (e.g., technical resources and fast-changing industry trends); (2) business transformations (e.g., agile vs. slow development, marketing-oriented business practices, and market burn-outs); (3) re-definition of the customer base (e.g., generalizations, niche categories, piracy, and clone games); (4) future disruptions (e.g., AR/VR and the maturity of mobile gamers); and (5) other general themes (e.g, stigma about gaming and localization of global titles vs. local production of original IPs).Social/Economic/Sectoral value - In order to create a stronger local industry, state bodies and non-governmental organizations can facilitate positive outcomes from these disruption periods by addressing and creating solutions for the issues revealed in this work. Originality – This paper offers unique insights to understand the videogame industry in Turkey.

  • How to Succeed in Communicating Software Metrics in Organization?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AMCIS (Americas Conference on Information Systems), Minneapolis, MI, August 10-14. - : AMCIS 2022 TREO 80.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While software metrics are indispensable for quality assurance, using metrics in practice is complicated. Quality, productivity, speed, and efficiency are important factors to be considered in software development (Holmstrom et al. 2006; Svensson 2005). Measuring correct metrics and using them in the right and transparent way contributes to pushing development in a desirable direction, leading to achieving projected goals and outcomes (Staron and Meding 2018). On the other hand, tracking the wrong metrics, and failing to interpret and communicate them properly results in a stressful work environment, conflicts, distrust, lower engagement, and decreased productivity (de Sá Leitão Júnior 2018; Ellis et al. 1991; Staron 2012). To ensure proper and effective use of metrics in organizations, successful communication around metrics is essential (Lindström et al. 2021; Post et al. 2002; Staron and Meding 2015). The purpose of this study is to understand and improve communication about metrics in contexts of contemporary software development practice in organizations. This is achieved by identifying the bottlenecks in the process of communication around metrics and how to overcome them in practice. Drawing on 38 semi-structured interviews and interactive workshops with metrics teams members and stakeholders from three organizations, we identify three interrelated challenges including limited knowledge about metrics and lack of terminology, uncoordinated use of multiple communication channels, and sensitivity of metrics, which influence workplace communication, trust, and performance. Our study shows the importance of developing metrics terminology to ensure the development of a shared understanding of metrics. Further, raising awareness about the affordances such channels as dashboards, email, MS Teams meetings/chat, stand up meetings, reports, etc., commonly used in software organizations, and how they can be combined to successfully transfer information about metrics is essential (Verhulsdonck and Shah 2020). It becomes especially important in remote work practices. Finally, though metrics is a powerful tool for decision making, enhancing transparency, and steering development in the desired direction, they can also turn into finger-pointing, blaming, and a pressing tool, resulting in stress and conflicts (Streit and Pizka 2011). The findings also indicate the importance of creating a culture around metrics, clarifying, and informing about the purpose of metrics in the organization (Umarji and Seaman 2008). We plan to build on the early findings of this study to develop a comprehensive framework for successful software metrics communication within organizations.

  • Discussing blockchain applications in TED Talks: A fashion wave approach to understanding the blockchain phenomenon
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE. - 1932-6203. ; 18:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since its first appearance as the infrastructure supporting Bitcoin, blockchain has received different waves of attention from practitioners and academics. Besides the degree of interest, the attention to blockchain has often focused not merely on its own potential and characteristics but on its applications field. However, looking at its application and deployment in domains other than cryptocurrency or the nascent non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain technology does not seem to be widely adopted or is still in its early stages. Given this, we are interested in how managers and the general public are informed about new technology other than through academic papers or the specialized press. In this paper, we analyze how blockchain has been presented by speakers invited to give TED and TEDx Talks to identify the most common terms used to present blockchain in these talks using a multi-methods approach (qualitative analysis and big data analysis) and see if the discourse surrounding blockchain has shifted over time. The results of this study show how the different perspectives brought by broadcasters like TED often overshadow a technological innovation like the blockchain in its evolution and application by the fact that the focus is instead shifted to products and services built on it. Also, this study shows how different degrees of attention and expertise are associated with each fashion wave of new or emergent technology innovations.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Librarianship and Information Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0961-0006 .- 1741-6477. ; , s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social networking sites have become indispensable information and communication tools in everyday life. This qualitative study investigated the information-related activities and affordances of a Facebook group for foreign mothers living in Sweden. Four key information activities were identified: posting, monitoring, commenting and searching. These activities show how the group members accessed the information resources embedded within the group in a variety of visible, invisible, active and passive modes. The article concludes with a discussion of how these different modes are facilitated by the affordances of visibility, accessibility, persistence and associations.

  • 2023. - 2nd
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Digital Politics. - 9781800377578 - 9781800377585 ; , s. 226-241
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter outlines the architectural approach to researching digital politics. An architectural approach focuses on platform structures and how they mediate, and can actively affect, users’ political agency online and offline. I first chart the lineage of architectural approaches in the social sciences, from discourse architectures to digital architectures. Then, I describe the process of ‘mapping,’ which theorizes how the functions of social media are built into empirically observable elements of platform design. To illustrate this mapping process, I present four functions of social media and map them onto various features of mainstream social media platforms. The purpose is to show how platform design features can have concrete implications for political processes. Here, the political process under examination is citizens’ political participation. Ultimately, my intent with this chapter is argue against the use of conceptually vague concepts like affordances by providing an alternative and less ambiguous concept – namely, digital architectures.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today's digital society is developing rapidly and the number of smart and innovative digital services is increasing every day. However, the rapid digitalization may also lead to the exclusion of some groups. Senior citizens are one of these groups at risk. The most common way of combating digital exclusion among seniors is to offer education and hands-on training. The short term effects of such education initiatives have shown positive results but the long term lasting effects of digital training have not been explored to any greater extent. Data was collected via semi structured interviews with seniors who had previously participated in training sessions targeting Swedish seniors with a desire to become more digital. The results show that although the immediate effect of participating in training is positive, more individualized training is needed to achieve a lasting effect.

  • Tracking the Digital Evolution of Entrepreneurial Finance: The Interplay Between Crowdfunding, Blockchain Technologies, Cryptocurrencies, and Initial Coin Offerings
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9391 .- 1558-0040. ; 67:4, s. 1099-1108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A vibrant development is currently taking place in entrepreneurial finance due to the field's digital evolution over recent years. This article aims to assess the interplay between four of the key phenomena that has fuelled this development, namely crowdfunding, blockchain technologies, cryptocurrencies, and initial coin offerings (ICOs). By making use of social media analytics, public discussions on social media concerning crowdfunding, blockchain technologies, cryptocurrencies, and ICOs have been systematically tracked in social media over three time periods between the May 6, 2017, and October 2, 2018. In doing so, a total of 197 770 captured posts across social media platforms have been collected and analyzed. The results illustrate that discussions on blockchain technologies dominated the interplay in the first analyzed time period, that discussions on cryptocurrencies and ICOs dominated the interplay in the second analyzed time period, while discussions concerning blockchain technologies, cryptocurrencies, and ICOs highly converge in the third time period. By illustrating this shift over the analyzed time periods and by offering a systematic exploration of key characteristics of the interplay at hand, this article adds to previous literature on entrepreneurial finance by providing an empirical contribution which details the coevolution of these phenomena in recent years.

  • Suspicious Minds: the Problem of Trust and Conversational Agents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). - 0925-9724 .- 1573-7551.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, the field of natural language processing has seen substantial developments, resulting in powerful voice-based interactive services. The quality of the voice and interactivity are sometimes so good that the artificial can no longer be differentiated from real persons. Thus, discerning whether an interactional partner is a human or an artificial agent is no longer merely a theoretical question but a practical problem society faces. Consequently, the ‘Turing test’ has moved from the laboratory into the wild. The passage from the theoretical to the practical domain also accentuates understanding as a topic of continued inquiry. When interactions are successful but the artificial agent has not been identified as such, can it also be said that the interlocutors have understood each other? In what ways does understanding figure in real-world human–computer interactions? Based on empirical observations, this study shows how we need two parallel conceptions of understanding to address these questions. By departing from ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, we illustrate how parties in a conversation regularly deploy two forms of analysis (categorial and sequential) to understand their interactional partners. The interplay between these forms of analysis shapes the developing sense of interactional exchanges and is crucial for established relations. Furthermore, outside of experimental settings, any problems in identifying and categorizing an interactional partner raise concerns regarding trust and suspicion. When suspicion is roused, shared understanding is disrupted. Therefore, this study concludes that the proliferation of conversational systems, fueled by artificial intelligence, may have unintended consequences, including impacts on human–human interactions.

  • Collecting digital research data through social media platforms: can “scientific social media” disrupt entrepreneurship research methods?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research Handbook on Entrepreneurial Behavior, Practice and Process. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. ; , s. 199-241
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter investigates how social media platforms tailored for research can help entrepreneurship researchers in their data collection and analysis efforts. The widespread use in society of social media platforms, accessed through people’s smartphones, tablets and computers, represents a new opportunity for social scientists to collect both big and thick digital data. Most social media platforms are however designed for commercial purposes, restricting the research questions that can be meaningfully explored to a minimum. The aim of this chapter is therefore to explore a novel approach labeled “scientific social media” (SSM). A case study method is applied where an SSM platform called LoopMe is described in-depth and compared to similar phenomena. Generalizations from this case then lead up to an attempt to answer the question: Can SSM platforms offer disruptive benefits to entrepreneurship researchers, such as radically increased efficiency or new-to-the-world features? Some identified benefits of SSM include ability to combine key strengths of established research methods and ontologies, ability to triangulate in new ways and ability to conduct very cost-efficient longitudinal studies.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Digital Disruptive Innovation. ; , s. 517-539
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Extant literature suggests that market disruptions take place because of two main reasons: technological disruption or institutional change. In view of these two alternative explanations, this paper aims to explore how the recent rise of the collaborative consumption platform Uber is perceived by consumers and whether this platform is primarily regarded as a technological innovation or as an insti-tutional disruption. Drawing from a dataset of more than 6500 user-generated contents in social media, our findings suggest that Uber is not primarily per¬ceived as a technological innovation, but rather as an institutional disruption.

  • Technological and informational frames : explaining age-related variation in the use of patient accessible electronic health records as technology and information
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Information Technology and People. - : Emerald. - 0959-3845 .- 1758-5813.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Data from a national patient survey (N = 1,155) of the Swedish PAEHR "Journalen" users were analysed, and an extended version of the theory of technological frames was developed to explain the variation in the technological and informational framing of information technologies found in the data.Design/methodology/approach Patient Accessible Electronic Health Records (PAEHRs) are implemented globally to address challenges with an ageing population. However, firstly, little is known about age-related variation in PAEHR use, and secondly, user perceptions of the PAEHR technology and the health record information and how the technology and information-related perceptions are linked to each other. The purpose of this study is to investigate these two under-studied aspects of PAEHRs and propose a framework based on the theory of technological frames to support studying the second aspect, i.e. the interplay of information and technology-related perceptions.Findings The results suggest that younger respondents were more likely to be interested in PAEHR contents for general interest. However, they did not value online access to the information as high as older ones. Older respondents were instead inclined to use medical records information to understand their health condition, prepare for visits, become involved in their own healthcare and think that technology has a much potential. Moreover, the oldest respondents were more likely to consider the information in PAEHRs useful and aimed for them but to experience the technology as inherently difficult to use.Research limitations/implications The sample excludes non-users and is not a representative sample of the population of Sweden. However, although the data contain an unknown bias, there are no specific reasons to believe that it would differently affect the survey’s age groups.Practical implications Age should be taken into account as a key factor that influences perceptions of the usefulness of PAEHRs. It is also crucial to consider separately patients’ views of PAEHRs as a technology and of the information contained in the EHR when developing and evaluating existing and future systems and information provision for patients.Social implications This study contributes to bridging the gap between information behaviour and systems design research by showing how the theory of technological frames complemented with parallel informational frames to provide a potentially powerful framework for elucidating distinct conceptualisations of (information) technologies and the information they mediate. The empirical findings show how information and information technology needs relating to PAEHRs vary according to age. In contrast to the assumptions in much of the earlier work, they need to be addressed separately.Originality/value Few earlier studies focus on (1) age-related variation in PAEHR use and (2) user perceptions of the PAEHR technology and the health record information and how the technology and information-related perceptions are linked to each other.

  • Do you want to receive bad news through your patient accessible electronic health record? : A national survey on receiving bad news in an era of digital health
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 18th International Symposium for Health Information Management Research. - Kalmar : Linnaeus University, University of Sheffield. - 9789189081093 ; , s. 169-178
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the fact that patient accessible electronic health records (PAEHRs) have been around for many years in several countries, there is a lack of research investigating patient preferences for receiving bad news, including through PAEHRs. Little is also known about the characteristics of the patients who prefer to receive bad news through the PAEHR in terms of e.g. medical diagnosis, age and educational level. This study, based on a national patient survey in Sweden (N=2587), investigated this. Results show that, generally, receiving bad news by reading in the PAEHR is still among the least preferred options. Additionally, a higher proportion of men want to receive bad news in the PAEHR compared to women (p=0.001), and the same goes for those who are not working/have worked in healthcare (p=0.007). An effect of disease groups was also found, showing that diabetes patients in particular, want to receive bad news through the PAEHR.

  • Theoretical Information Studies : Information In The World
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is the first attempt to delineate the synthetic field of the theoretical study of information, treating information as the basic phenomenon on the fundamental level of the world, encompassing nature, technology, individuals and society. The exploration of information is done within Info-computational approaches, to natural and social phenomena such as Bioinformatics, Information Physics, Informational Chemistry, Computational Physics, Cognitive and Social sciences, with special emphasis on interdisciplinary, crossdisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge. The book presents results of collaboration across research fields within info-computational and info-structural frameworks, in attempt to better theoretically and conceptually capture the phenomenon of information and its dynamics (such as computation and communication), as they appear on different levels of organization, on different scales and in different contexts.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate how to design community technologies for public events. We do so with a focus on technologies that give rise to new forms of participation and knowledge co-production in public libraries. Specifically, we deployed a digital service at a major public library during its four-week creative workshop series. The system offered an alternative way for people to work together as a community, to go beyond achieving individual goals, and to contribute to the achievement of public goals (e.g., building community bookshelves). We report on how the system has reconfigured physical spaces and afforded new social practices in the library. We propose Computational Alternatives as a fruitful approach for gaining situated, nuanced insights into a technology's possible adoption. We offer key insights in the form of computational alternatives vignettes - grounded stories that encapsulate sociotechnical implications of technology, pointing to plausible alternative futures.

  • 2021

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ARCOM 2020 - Association of Researchers in Construction Management, 36th Annual Conference 2020 - Proceedings. ; , s. 786-795
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the interest lies in increasing the understanding of how individual actors (both human and objects) within public facilities management organizations respond to the changes in their organizational context that is imposed on them, and how this is affecting their institutional work (IW). Data was collected through a workshop and interviews with officials from public facilities management organizations. Data was analysed using a framework that focused on the interaction between humans, emotions and objects. The findings present three types of objects, that have in common that they are used to reduce anxiety; past objects, used a 'soft blankets', future, imaginary objects used for concretizing the future perfect and current objects as shields to prevent 'reality' from being managed. The findings further indicate that humans believe that they conduct institutional work to create new practices in public facilities management organizations, when they are in fact maintaining current practices, for example by relaying on future imaginary objects to solve current problems. The paper complements previous research that has shown how individuals engage in creating new or disrupting old practices if the current situational order threatens their psychological wellbeing. Instead, it is argued that people engage in activities that maintain the institution of public facilities management when their psychological wellbeing is threatened.

  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - Göteborg : Nordicom. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 41:2, s. 147-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Facebook has become an essential channel for local governments to convey information and interact with citizens, and communication on the platform has been studied intensively through a range of smaller case studies in various countries. By looking at the development of Swedish municipalities’ Facebook usage between 2009 and 2017, this article attempts to frame such use in a longitudinal perspective. Based on more than 85,000 posts from 38 Swedish local governments, the findings show that most municipalities have adapted to an online visual culture, using photos and videos “to go viral”. The findings also show large increases in interactions, such as sharing and liking, whilst commenting appears to lag behind. It also shows that local government Facebook pages retain a strong, yet decreasing, tie with government web pages, visible through a tendency of the Facebook page to recycle information from the web page.

  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering at SPS2020. - Amsterdam : IOS Press BV. - 9781614994398 ; , s. 649-660, s. 649-660
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digitalization and the use of advanced technologies for more flexible and resource efficient production processes are changing the industrial competitive environment. However, new technologies are not seldom implemented without the whole organization being ready to fully utilize its benefits. This readiness can be expressed as organizational digital maturity. Previous studies identified that the level of digitalization is increasing, but, in many cases, due to lack of foundation, it is not aligned with the business strategy and/or supported by the organizational and technological infrastructures. There is a gap in existing models to provide practical starting-up steps to support the organizational digital readiness. A conceptual readiness framework for organizational digital readiness was tested through the analysis and reflection of four cases implemented by a Swedish manufacturing company. Findings point out that it is important to create a proper organizational foundation, a readiness, to ensure a company to evolve in digital maturity. That can be developed based on three main stages of change management practices. The tool can be used to identify the organizational readiness and thereby the gaps and thresholds necessary to overcome. This will enable companies to utilize the technology level necessary to increase cost and resource efficiency, and hence competitiveness. In addition, dimensions and a roadmap for organizational, digital, and smart readiness is presented. © 2020 The authors

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a call to rethink how we describe groups of users and create design tools that may influence the design practice and foster specific mentalities. Many times, research literature plays an important part in the design process and decision making, yet the role it has in creating an understanding of the user is seldom discussed. To support a project focusing on designing for seniors, a multidisciplinary team selected relevant literature for the beginning of the design process. The literature selected consisted of 'mental' design tools such as methods, considerations, and design domains to support understanding and designing for seniors. This paper describes the tools suggested by the articles and concludes with a reflection on the effect of the literature we choose on the design process using the project as a design case.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. - 9781450391573 ; , s. 1-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses Digital Environmental Stewardship as an analytical framework that can help HCI scholarship to understand, design, and assess sociotechnical interventions concerned with sustainable waste management practices. Drawing on environmental studies, we outline key concepts of environmental stewardship - namely actors, capacity, and motivations - to unpack how different initiatives for handling waste are organised, both through grassroots and top-down interventions, and through varying sociotechnical configurations. We use these dimensions to analyse three different cases of waste management that illustrate how actions of care for the environment are ecologically organised, and what challenges might hinder them beyond -or besides- behavioural motivations. We conclude with a discussion on the orientation to action that the suggested framework provides, and its role in understanding, designing and assessing digital technologies in this domain. We argue that examining how stewardship actions fold into each other helps design sociotechnical interventions for managing waste from within a relational perspective.

    • This article explores the digitization of Swedish pen-and-paper role-playing games through the inflamed online discussions in the role-playing community that followed in its wake; discussions that in some cases resist the very idea of Digital in an age where Digital has become synonymous with ubiquitous progress and efficiency. The case in question focuses on Riotminds, a Swedish RPG publishing company that in 2010, in one broad stroke, transformed and converged all their analogue printed products into a single, online subscription service. Drawing on a general theoretical framework of materiality and (cultural) practice, the purpose of this article is to investigate the effects of digitization by asking: What does this particular instance of technological transformation and expressions of resistance reveal about materiality and the ongoing tensions between what constitutes meaningful digital and analogue immersive experiences? The results contribute to a critical, materialist perspective on digitization that encompasses both Digital’s virtues and challenges in terms of the digital transformation of physical practices and physical space. In other words, forwarding an understanding of digitalization as an intricate aesthetic shift, where identified analog sensibilities are converted into digital sensibilities, and its consequences for creating meaningful gaming experiences on behalf of the user (or player).

    • Digital government often addresses how, where, and by whom digital transformation is brought into the complex institutional framed practices of governments and governance of society. However, digital transformation also points at critical demands to address the basic underlying institutional design of governments. The ongoing digital transformation of public welfare institutions opens for a gradual redesign of public institutions. It is important to address core values, such as inclusion, diversity, and literacy, to ensure a reflected transformation and re-design of public institutions. The purpose of this paper is to show how new forms of digital public services may have to be matched with institutional re-design to sustain public values and legitimate governments. We build on Ostrom’s eight design principles for institutional governance of common-pool resources and propose four principles for analyzing potential needs for re-design of institutions. Through a re-analysis of two case studies on automation in Swedish public organizations, we illustrate and discuss the institutional design. Hereby, we identify critical points for further analysis of emerging demands for institutional re-design. The analysis indicates that we must see beyond the organizational changes of digital government reforms and programs. We need to stretch into the institutional and foundational models of the public sector and how to provide equal and resilient welfare in a digital and changing world. We conclude by suggesting an agenda for research on institutional re-design in the digital era.

  • Ingår i: International journal of human-computer studies. - London : Elsevier. - 1071-5819 .- 1095-9300. ; 145, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Automation is projected to transform many industries and work domains and enable both increased levels of safety and efficiency by reallocating many of the functions traditionally performed by operators. However, research on the relation between automation and work practice is lagging and needs to be further explored in order to ground the debate and design of automated work on a sound empirical basis reflecting work in actual organizational settings. In particular, research is needed that offers rich naturalistic representations of human automation interaction that accounts for the mutual shaping of human and material agency over time. The ethnographic workplace study reported in this paper draws on the sociomaterial practice perspective and on the theory of imbrication to analyze a case in which an automatic speed regulation system was installed onboard five large passenger ferries in order to improve the energy efficiency of the execution of voyages. The results show how the adoption, appropriation and use of automated technologies is inextricable from the local patterns of social interaction and collaboration. The study contributes with a deeper understanding of the relation and entanglement of the social and technological elements in human automation interaction.

  • Is there alignment amongst scientific literature, news media and patient forums regarding topics?: A study of breast and lung cancer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Online Information Review. - 1468-4527 .- 1468-4535. ; 45:5, s. 983-999
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: During recent years, web technologies and mass media have become prevalent in the context of medicine and health. Two examples of important web technologies used in health are news media and patient forums. Both have a significant role in shaping patients' perspective and behaviour in relation to health and illness, as well as the way that they might choose or change their treatment. In this paper, the authors investigated the application of web technologies using the data analysis approach. The authors did this analysis from the point of view of topics being discussed and disseminated via patients and journalists in breast and lung cancer. The study also investigated the (dis)alignment amongst these two groups and scientists in terms of topics. Design/methodology/approach: Three data sets comprised documents published between 2014 and 2018 obtained from ProQuest and Web of Science Medline databases, alongside data from three major patient forums on breast and lung cancer. The analysis and visualisation in this paper have been done using the udpipe, igraph R packages and VOSviewer. Findings: The study’s findings showed that in general scientists focussed more on prognosis and treatment of cancer, whereas patients and journalists focussed more on detection, prevention and role of social and emotional support. The only exception was for news coverage of lung cancer where the largest cluster was related to treatment, research in cancer treatment and therapies. However, when comparing coverage by scientists and journalists in terms of treatment, the focus of news articles in both cancer types was mainly on chemotherapy and complimentary therapies. Finally, topics such as lifestyle or pain management were only discussed by breast cancer patients. Originality/value: The results obtained from this study may provide valuable insights into topics of interest for each group of scientists, journalist and patients as well as (dis)alignment among them in terms of topics. These findings are important as scientific research is heavily dependent on communication, and research does not exist in a bubble. Scientists and journalists can gain insights from patients' experiences and needs, which in turn may help them to have a more holistic and realistic view. • This academic thought piece provides an overview of the history of, and current trends in, publishing practices in the scientific fields known to the authors (chemical sciences, social sciences and humanities), as well as a discussion of how open access mandates such as Plan S from cOAlition S will affect these practices. It begins by summarizing the evolution of scientific publishing, in particular how it was shaped by the learned societies, and highlights how important quality assurance and scientific management mechanisms are being challenged by the recent introduction of ever more stringent open access mandates. The authors then discuss the various reactions of the researcher community to the introduction of Plan S, and elucidate a number of concerns: that it will push researchers towards a pay-to-publish system which will inevitably create new divisions between those who can afford to get their research published and those who cannot; that it will disrupt collaboration between researchers on the different sides of cOAlition S funding; and that it will have an impact on academic freedom of research and publishing. The authors analyse the dissemination of, and responses to, an open letter distributed and signed in reaction to the introduction of Plan S, before concluding with some thoughts on the potential for evolution of open access in scientific publishing.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

    • Competence development at work has since long been a core managerial challenge and a topic that has received a steady research interest. In academia, the topic has been explored in what we see as two scholarly traditions: 1) the earlier scholarship on ‘competence’ where discussions of technology have largely been absent, and 2) the later scholarship on ‘digital competence’ where the focus has been on the individual’s abilities to use particular Information Technology (IT) artifacts. With the increased sophistication of digitalization in today’s society, we suggest—while attending to digitalization—competence scholarship needs to go beyond the study of individuals’ ability to use particular IT artifacts. One way to do so is to investigate how digitalization transforms work conditions, and how individuals respond to these shifts. In this study, we focus on the role of today’s cyber-infrastructural technology, such as social media, in re-writing work conditions. By examining, through in-depth interviews, how the work of communication practitioners is digitalized, we 1) extend the conceptualization of digital competence beyond the customary IT competence, and 2) suggest two levels of competence based on two empirically grounded conceptualizations; competence as the optimization of existing resources, and competence as the envisioning of new possibilities.

    • Increasing diversity in the healthcare workforce has brought to the foreground the importance of addressing phenomena of racism, discrimination, and bias against healthcare workers of diverse backgrounds. This paper aims to contribute to the growing literature on patient bias by exploring the experiences of migrant physicians practicing in Sweden using thematic content analysis of 17 semi-structured interviews and applying microaggressions theory. Four themes pertaining to different forms of patient bias experienced by the respondents emerged from the transcripts such as refusal of care, questioning language competence, questioning medical competence, and ethnic jokes/stereotypes. Four additional themes dealing with strategies implemented by the respondents to cope with patient bias were also identified, namely confrontation avoidance, collaboration with Swedish healthcare staff, self-disclosure, and active listening. The findings elucidate the need to encourage inclusion in the workplace by providing opportunities for continuous language training and collegial support.

While numerous studies have investigated the extent to which media affects trust in institutions, or the polarization of political values, this study shifts the focus on to how one’s media source conceived here as social media versus traditional media affects the perception of corruption in 2 ways. First, we hypothesize that citizens who consume their news predominately from social media will have higher perceptions of political corruption than consumers of more traditional media sources. Second, we hypothesize that perceptions among social media consumers will be more polarized. Specifically, we argue that the gap in corruption perception between supporters of government and opposition political parties will be larger among social media consumers compared to traditional news consumers. We test our hypotheses using newly collected survey data from the European Quality of Government Index survey from 2017, which contains nearly 78,000 respondents in 21 countries in the European Union. Estimating our model with both parametric and non-parametric approaches, we find robust empirical support for two of osur 3 hypotheses.
