    • The effect of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) on the serological response at influenza vaccination was studied in 117 patients who had undergone stem cell transplantation (SCT). The vaccine response was evaluated as significant increases in levels of influenza hemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) antibodies and of IgG antibodies measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). There was no difference in antibody response to either influenza A or B in 64 patients who received GM-CSF at vaccination, compared with the 53 who did not. In the subgroup of allogeneic SCT patients, HAI showed that the response rate to the influenza B vaccine was significantly higher in the treatment group (P<.05). ELISA showed that autologous SCT patients with breast cancer who received GM-CSF had a better response to influenza A (P<.05) and B (P<.01). At early vaccination, 4-12 months after stem cell transplantation, these responses were more pronounced. GM-CSF appears to improve the response to influenza vaccination in some groups of SCT patients, but only to a limited extent.

    • We present the results of an extended study of five birefringences-Kerr, Cotton-Mouton, Buckingham, Jones, and Magnetoelectric-on benzene in the gas phase. The relevant molecular quantities-first-order properties, linear, quadratic, and cubic response functions-are computed employing the density-functional theory (DFT) response theory, with a choice of functionals. In some cases, different functionals are employed for the wave-function computational step and for the subsequent analytical response calculation to determine the combination yielding at the same time the optimal energy and energy derivative results. Augmented correlation consistent basis sets of double and triple zeta quality are used. The DFT results are compared to those obtained at the Hartree-Fock level and in some cases within a coupled cluster singles and doubles electronic structure model. The study tries to assess the ability of the DFT response theory to describe a wide range of properties in a system of rather large size and high complexity. The relative strength of the five birefringences for plausible experimental conditions is determined and, when possible, comparison is made with the results of the measurements.

    • Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an established treatment method for therapy-refractory epilepsy and, in Europe, for treatment-resistant depression also. Clinical and experimental investigations have also shown positive effects of VNS on cognition in epilepsy and depression. The purpose of the present pilot study was to investigate the effect of VNS on cognition in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

    • The world of telecommunications is currently going through a shift of paradigm from circuit switched, connection oriented information transfer towards packet switched, connection-less transfer. For application independence and to decrease costs for transport and switching it is attractive to go IP all the way over the air interface to the end user equipment, i.e., to not terminate the IP protocols before the air interface. A major reason to avoid using voice over IP over the air interface has, up to now, been the relatively large overhead imposed by the IP/UDP/RTP headers of voice packets. This paper presents a novel header compression scheme, ROCCO, that can compress the large headers to a minimum of one octet and is robust against the errors imposed by cellular links. Its performance is excellent both in terms of robustness and compression efficiency. Moreover, system capacity simulations are presented, which show that ROCCO gives significantly higher system capacity than the other current header compression candidate, CRTP. Finally it is argued that with ROCCO voice over IP over wireless becomes feasible from a spectrum-efficiency point of view

    • The second harmonic and electro-optical responses for the water molecule in its liquid state are theoretically revised. The continuum, semicontinuum, and supermolecular solvation models are employed using quadratic response theory at the Hartree-Fock level, either in the equilibrium or nonequilibrium implementation. The experimentally observed sign change of the second harmonic response of water on liquefaction is reproduced using the supermolecular and semicontinuum model for both equilibrium and nonequilibrium solvation. The conclusions of a previous study, which rested upon linear response theory in an equilibrium implementation, are confirmed. Also, the assumption of Kleinman symmetry and dispersion is addressed.

    • We report the observation of antibunched emission from single self-assembled InAs quantum dots under various conditions. We have measured the correlation function of the photon emission pertaining to single emission lines from single quantum dots under continuous and pulsed laser excitation, as well as under continuous white light excitation. The measurements were performed under different excitation intensities at liquid helium temperatures on two samples with distinct structures. At higher temperatures ~30 K!, an antibunching dip was still observed. We have also observed antibunching on a second emission line in the quantum dot spectrum, attributed to the biexciton, demonstrating the possibility of generating photon pairs with a single quantum dot. Polarization correlations on the biexciton and exciton line were also measured in an attempt to generate entangled photon pairs.

    • We have studied the photoluminescence correlation from a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled Stranski–Krastanow quantum dot under continuous, as well as under pulsed excitation. Under weak continuous excitation, where the single dot luminescence is due primarily to single exciton recombinations, antibunching is observed in the single dot emission correlation. Under weak pulsed excitation, the number of photons emitted by the quantum dot per pulse is close to one. We present data obtained under both conditions and are able to show that devices based on single quantum dots can be used to generate single photons.
