  • The Methodological Quality and Intervention Fidelity of Randomised Controlled Trials Evaluating Social Skills Group Programs in Autistic Adolescents : A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of autism and developmental disorders. - : Springer. - 0162-3257 .- 1573-3432. ; 54, s. 1281-1316
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic review and meta-analysis were utilised to explore the methodological quality, program fidelity, and efficacy of social skills group programs (SSGPs) aiming to support autistic adolescents in navigating their everyday social worlds. The study evaluated the methodological quality and theoretical fidelity of studies, with a random effect meta-analysis conducted to summarise the overall efficacy of SSGP and its effect on social communication and interaction, behavioural/emotional challenges, adaptive functioning, and autism characteristics. Although findings from the 18 identified studies indicated an adjusted medium overall effect with these programs successfully supporting autistic adolescents’ socialisation needs (g = 0. 60, p < 0.001), most studies demonstrated medium to low program fidelity despite their good methodological quality. Given the significant heterogeneity of SSGPs and variations in the design and measurement frameworks of efficacy studies, understanding the generalisability of the findings of this research is unclear.

  • Socket grafting with the use of autologous bone: an experimental study in the dog.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Clinical oral implants research. - : Wiley. - 1600-0501 .- 0905-7161. ; 22:1, s. 9-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • studies in humans and animals have shown that following tooth removal (loss), the alveolar ridge becomes markedly reduced. Attempts made to counteract such ridge diminution by installing implants in the fresh extraction sockets were not successful, while socket grafting with anorganic bovine bone mineral prevented ridge contraction.

  • The influence of Bio-Oss collagen on healing of an extraction socket: An experimental study in the dog.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry. - 0198-7569. ; 28:2, s. 123-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Different approaches were advocated to preserve or improve the dimension and contour of the ridge following tooth extraction. In some of studies socket grafting apparently had a successful outcome while in other reports the benefits of such therapy were more questionable. Aim: The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the effect on hard tissue modeling and remodeling of the placement of a xenograft in the fresh extraction socket in dogs. Material and Methods: Five mongrel dogs were used. Two mandibular premolars (4P4) were hemi-sected. The distal roots were carefully removed. In one socket, a graft consisting of Bio-Oss® Collage was placed while the contra-lateral site was left without grafting. After 3 months of healing, the dogs were euthanized and biopsies sampled. From each experimental site, 4 ground sections – 2 from the mesial root and 2 from the healed socket – were prepared, stained and examined in the microscope. Results: The placement of Bio-Oss® Collagen in the fresh extraction socket failed to inhibit the processes of modeling and remodeling that took place in the socket walls following tooth extraction. The biomaterial, however, apparently promoted de novo hard tissue formation, in particular in the cortical region of the extraction site. Hereby, the dimension of the hard tissue was maintained and the profile of the ridge was better preserved. Conclusion: The placement of a biomaterial in an extraction socket may promote bone modeling and at least temporarily compensate for marginal ridge contraction.

  • Tissue modeling following implant placement in fresh extraction sockets.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Clinical oral implants research. - : Wiley. - 0905-7161 .- 1600-0501. ; 17:6, s. 615-24

    • OBJECTIVE: To study whether osseointegration once established following implant placement in a fresh extraction socket may be lost as a result of tissue modeling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven beagle dogs were used. The third and fourth premolars in both quadrants of the mandible were used as experimental teeth. Buccal and lingual full-thickness flaps were elevated and distal roots were removed. Implants were installed in the fresh extraction socket. Semi-submerged healing of the implant sites was allowed. In five dogs, the experimental procedure was first performed in the right side of the mandible and 2 months later in the left mandible. These five animals were sacrificed 1 month after the final implant installation. In two dogs, the premolar sites on both sides of the mandible were treated in one surgical session and biopsies were obtained immediately after implant placement. All biopsies were processed for ground sectioning and stained. RESULTS: The void that existed between the implant and the socket walls at surgery was filled at 4 weeks with woven bone that made contact with the SLA surface. In this interval, (i) the buccal and lingual bone walls underwent marked surface resorption and (ii) the height of the thin buccal hard tissue wall was reduced. The process of healing continued, and the buccal bone crest shifted further in the apical direction. After 12 weeks, the buccal crest was located>2 mm apical of the marginal border of the SLA surface. CONCLUSION: The bone-to-implant contact that was established during the early phase of socket healing following implant installation was in part lost when the buccal bone wall underwent continued resorption.

  • Rural Networks Cost Comparison Between 5G (Mobile) and FTTx (Fixed) Scenarios
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE 29th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC). - : IEEE. - 9781538660102 - 9781538660096 ; , s. 259-264
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we simulate the infrastructure costs for very fast networks in rural areas. FTTH technology has been around for at least a decade, but two brand new technologies are expected to launch commercially in the next couple of years: 5G and G. Fast. This could have a strong impact on infrastructure costs and the fulfilment of the European Union, rural coverage objectives. 5G seems to be very promising since LTE is not a reasonable solution for very fast networks. FTTC has so far not been a valid alternative, since for the last mile, the only options for FTTC has been ADSL and VDSL, which however cannot reach very fast data rates. G.Fast is three times faster than VDSL and has the advantage, comparing to FTTH, that the last mile infrastructure is already build in the form of copper local loop.

  • Network analysis reveals contrasting effects of intraspecific competition on individual versus population diets
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Ecology. - : Wiley. - 0012-9658 .- 1939-9170. ; 89:7, s. 1981-1993
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal foraging theory predicts that individuals should become more opportunistic when intraspecific competition is high and preferred resources are scarce. This density-dependent diet shift should result in increased diet breadth for individuals as they add previously unused prey to their repertoire. As a result, the niche breadth of the population as a whole should increase. In a recent study, R. Svanback and D. I. Bolnick confirmed that intraspecific competition led to increased population diet breadth in threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). However, individual diet breadth did not expand as resource levels declined. Here, we present a new method based on complex network theory that moves beyond a simple measure of diet breadth, and we use the method to reexamine the stickleback experiment. This method reveals that the population as a whole added new types of prey as stickleback density was increased. However, whereas foraging theory predicts that niche expansion is achieved by individuals accepting new prey in addition to previously preferred prey, we found that a subset of individuals ceased to use their previously preferred prey, even though other members of their population continued to specialize on the original prey types. As a result, populations were subdivided into groups of ecologically similar individuals, with diet variation among groups reflecting phenotype-dependent changes in foraging behavior as prey density declined. These results are consistent with foraging theory if we assume that quantitative trait variation among consumers affects prey preferences, and if cognitive constraints prevent individuals from continuing to use their formerly preferred prey while adding new prey.

  • Consensus-based technical recommendations for clinical translation of renal BOLD MRI
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Magnetic Resonance Materials in Physics, Biology and Medicine. - : Springer. - 0968-5243 .- 1352-8661. ; 33:1, s. 199-215
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Harmonization of acquisition and analysis protocols is an important step in the validation of BOLD MRI as a renal biomarker. This harmonization initiative provides technical recommendations based on a consensus report with the aim to move towards standardized protocols that facilitate clinical translation and comparison of data across sites. We used a recently published systematic review paper, which included a detailed summary of renal BOLD MRI technical parameters and areas of investigation in its supplementary material, as the starting point in developing the survey questionnaires for seeking consensus. Survey data were collected via the Delphi consensus process from 24 researchers on renal BOLD MRI exam preparation, data acquisition, data analysis, and interpretation. Consensus was defined as >= 75% unanimity in response. Among 31 survey questions, 14 achieved consensus resolution, 12 showed clear respondent preference (65-74% agreement), and 5 showed equal (50/50%) split in opinion among respondents. Recommendations for subject preparation, data acquisition, processing and reporting are given based on the survey results and review of the literature. These technical recommendations are aimed towards increased inter-site harmonization, a first step towards standardization of renal BOLD MRI protocols across sites. We expect this to be an iterative process updated dynamically based on progress in the field.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Texture images of limited size can be insufficient for statistical learning to perform the task of image retrieval. This paper proposes a hypothesis that the utilization of synthesized texture and noise addition can improve texture analysis with spatial statistics. Rationales for this hypothesis are that texture synthesis allows the enlargement of an image size for better description of its spatial statistics, and noise added to texture pixels at some levels enhances discriminative power of texture randomness. The improvements using synthesized images of coarse-aperiodic and fine-periodic texture categories with added noise for feature extraction with the semi-variogram and feature-vector matching using the log-likelihood ratio suggest the validation of the proposed hypothesis that is promising for handling classification of texture of small sample sizes.
