- This article introduces an agent-based simulation model representing the dynamic processes of cooperative R&D in the manufacturing sector of South Korea. Firms’ behaviors were defined according to empirical findings on a data set from the internationally standardized Korean Innovation Survey in 2005. Simulation algorithms and parameters were defined based on the determinants of firms’ likelihood to participate in cooperation with other firms when conducting innovation activities. The calibration process was conducted to the point where artificially generated scenarios were equivalent to the one observed in the real world. The aim of this simulation game was to create a basic implementation that could be extended to test different policies strategies in order to observe sector responses (including cross-sector spillovers) when promoting cooperative innovation. Based on the evaluation of simulated research collaboration data, sector responses to strategies concerning government intervention in R&D of the firms can now be assessed.

- Recombinant human GH (rhGH) has been in use for 30 years, and over that time its safety and efficacy in children and adults has been subject to considerable scrutiny. In 2001, a statement from the GH Research Society (GRS) concluded that 'for approved indications, GH is safe'; however, the statement highlighted a number of areas for on-going surveillance of long-term safety, including cancer risk, impact on glucose homeostasis, and use of high dose pharmacological rhGH treatment. Over the intervening years, there have been a number of publications addressing the safety of rhGH with regard to mortality, cancer and cardiovascular risk, and the need for long-term surveillance of the increasing number of adults who were treated with rhGH in childhood. Against this backdrop of interest in safety, the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), the GRS, and the Pediatric Endocrine Society (PES) convened a meeting to reappraise the safety of rhGH. The ouput of the meeting is a concise position statement.

Deposition of Nanostructured CdS Thin Films by Thermal Evaporation Method: Effect of Substrate Temperature

- Nanocrystalline CdS thin films were grown on glass substrates by a thermal evaporation method in a vacuum of about 2 × 10-5 Torr at substrate temperatures ranging between 25 °C and 250 °C. The physical properties of the layers were analyzed by transmittance spectra, XRD, SEM, and four-point probe measurements, and exhibited strong dependence on substrate temperature. The XRD patterns of the films indicated the presence of single-phase hexagonal CdS with (002) orientation. The structural parameters of CdS thin films (namely crystallite size, number of grains per unit area, dislocation density and the strain of the deposited films) were also calculated. The resistivity of the as-deposited films were found to vary in the range 3.11-2.2 × 104 Ω·cm, depending on the substrate temperature. The low resistivity with reasonable transmittance suggest that this is a reliable way to fine-tune the functional properties of CdS films according to the specific application.

Factors explaining desire for dental implant therapy : analysis of the results from a longitudinal study

- PURPOSE: The aim of this research was to investigate possible factors behind the desire for and changes in attitude toward implant treatment in a population of middle-aged and older individuals in Sweden. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 1989 and 1999, questionnaires were sent to 3,000 residents in Orebro County, Sweden. Response rates were 79% and 68%, respectively. Those responding to both questionnaires yielded a longitudinal study panel. Logistic regression models were done with "desire of implant treatment" and "changes in desire of implant treatment" as dependent variables. RESULTS: Older people, non-city residents, and those with one or several missing and unreplaced teeth changed their desire for implant treatment between study years. Effects of age, residence, and better dental status disappeared during the 10-year study period. Those who were edentulous and those with removable dentures (pseudo R2: 0.17) expressed lower desire for treatment than those with all teeth remaining or only one or a few teeth missing (pseudo R2: 0.24) in 1989. High income significantly increased the probability to desire implant treatment for the study panel at both study occasions (P = .016 and P = .034 for 1989 and 1999, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Factors influencing desire for implant treatment were primarily income and dental status. The influence of young age, urban living, and dental status regarding the subgroup with one or several teeth missing in relation to those with all their teeth disappeared during the 10-year study period

High burden of premature ventricular contractions in structurally normal hearts : To worry or not in pediatric patients?

- Background: There is paucity of data regarding the significance of high percentage of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) in healthy children and their impact on left ventricular (LV) function and the risk of ventricular arrhythmias. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of LV systolic dysfunction in children with frequent PVCs and determine whether PVC characteristics were predictive of LV dysfunction. Methods: We performed a single-center retrospective review to examine the prevalence of PVC-induced cardiomyopathy and natural history of PVC burden in children with frequent PVCs. Children aged 6 months–21 years with PVCs noted on 24-hr Holter monitoring studies were enrolled. The four categories included those with a PVC burden of >10%, 10%–20%, and those with more than 20% PVC burden. Results: A total of 134 children were included, 65 with more than 10% PVCs and 31 with more than 20% PVCs. Median age of the patients was 10.5 years (IQR 6.1–14.8 years), with 79 males (54.5%). Median PVC burden was 8.7% (IQR 4.2%–16.9%) with median follow-up of 2.8 years (IQR 1.2–4.6 years). During 2.8 years (1.3–4.3 years) of follow-up, the PVC burden decreased by 67% of baseline PVC burden in those who did not undergo any intervention. There were no deaths. Conclusion: PVCs in children with structurally normal hearts are associated with a relatively benign course, with trend toward spontaneous resolution.
