  • Understanding the development of emerging complex intelligent systems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : ELSEVIER. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the intricate emergence of complex and increasingly intelligent systems (CoIS) in the wake of new possibilities created by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, building on an analysis of the emergence of CoIS using perspectives of development and change. The findings, based on rich qualitative data collected through key informant interviews with reflective practitioners from aviation, automotive and naval system domains, indicate that firms facing the emergence of CoIS, need to build capabilities allowing several logics to co-exist in a newly evolving hybrid CoIS management logic.

  • Can innovation be measured? A framework of how measurement of innovation engages attention in firms
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering and Technology Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 48, s. 64-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many firms manage the innovation process by using metrics. Yet, whether measurement supports or hinders innovation continues to be a topic of debate. To shed new light on this debate, this paper presents a conceptual framework of how measurement engages attention in firms. We draw on attention based theory and conceptualize innovation measurement as an attention-focusing device. We identify two ideal types of measurement practices. i) Directional Measurement: which is based on few and unidirectional metrics and encourages exploitative innovation efforts. ii) Conversational Measurement: which is based on multiple and ambiguous metrics and encourages exploration. We extend theory building in the technology and accounting literatures by theo- rizing the role of metrics and measurement for attention and by discussing the implications of such attentional engagement for innovation performance. In so doing, we engage closely with the managerial task of managing innovation while simplifying its conditions, thereby providing ac- tionable advice.

  • Exploring the relationship between flagship platform projects and intrapreneurial self-renewal activities : Managing intrapreneurial equivocality
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 38, s. 37-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the relationship between flagship projects and intrapreneurial self-renewal activities in an explorative, in-depth case study of the concept phase in a multi-project setting. Five renewal processes (design management, project control, system engineering, time management, and decision making) stood out in the study; each of which had an impact on organizational performance. These five processes were of an equivocal character and should be seen as entrepreneurial because they influenced organizational performance. In line with previous literature, it is proposed that, in general, any type of business project would infuse intrapreneurial activities; however, flagship projects in particular increase the level of intrapreneurial equivocality and infuse parallel and collective development of intrapreneurial activities because such projects call for significant organizational self-renewal. Our particular contribution is that we define and introduce the concept of intrapreneurial equivocality.

  • A tentative framework for analyzing integration in collaborative manufacturing network settings : A case study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 22:1-2, s. 141-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is important for small and medium-sized corporations to collaborate in networks in order to develop capacity, capability, and competence to perform product development and become suppliers of complete systems. The purpose of this case study is to identify barriers and to develop an analytical framework of inter-organizational collaboration in network settings. In this paper we present a tentative four-dimensional framework in terms of surface of integration, scope of integration, time horizon of integration, and intensity of integration. This framework can be used to analyze how network settings are developed, in terms of structural design of the network, the design of the workflow in collaborative settings, and the aspects of handling the psychological and social boundaries between people. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. • Exploring uncertainties in collaborative product development: Managing customer-supplier collaborations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering and Technology Management - JET-M. - : Elsevier BV. - 1608-4799 .- 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 53:July–September, s. 49-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper explores technological, commercial and organizational uncertainties of collaborative product development by customers and suppliers. The empirical data consist of an in-depth single case study of a collaborative product development project. The findings provide a deep insight into the dynamic character of different uncertainties in collaborative product development. The study shows the complexity of managing uncertainties as well as the importance of having not only well-functioning external collaboration but also internal cross-functional collaboration. The findings imply how uncertainties are interrelated and how one type of uncertainty influences other uncertainties, which affects how both customers and suppliers manage the relationship.

  • Supplier involvement in product development : Challenges and mitigating mechanisms from a supplier perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores challenges that suppliers experience when being involved in customers’ product development projects, and how these challenges can be mitigated. It presents a framework of supplier involvement in product development involving four dimensions: People-Process-Tools/Technology-Interaction. The framework consists of 24 challenges and associated mitigating mechanisms. The article concludes that suppliers must be aware of the challenges to ensure that proper internal capabilities are in place within their organizations. It also argues that customers should be aware of the challenges to provide best possible prerequisites for suppliers to ensure successful project outcomes.

  • The front end in non-assembled product development : a multiple case study of mineral- and metal firms
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 29:4, s. 468-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conceptualize the front end in non-assembled product development to be iterative and experiment-based, consisting of three sub-phases: informal start-up, formal idea-study, and formal pre-study. Although some key activities are shared with the front end activities in assembled product development, literature reviews, anticipating requirements of customers’ production processes, analysis of raw materials, anticipation of scale-up problems, and tests in bench-, pilot plant-, and full scale production represent unique activities. In addition, product concepts were frequently developed in parallel, requiring specification of physical, chemical and structural properties. These findings have implications for increasing the success and quality of front end efforts

  • Coordination in collaborative manufacturing mega-networks : a case study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 22:3, s. 226-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaborative manufacturing networks are becoming popular. Today, the scale of these networks can be enormous, and include a complex myriad of partners from numerous companies and organizations spanning several countries and even continents. This paper explores how these partners successfully coordinate projects through an investigation of one such “collaborative manufacturing mega-network” or CMMN in the commercial aerospace industry. The case is analyzed with the aid of the literary state-of-the-art, and a number of organizational, structural, and cultural issues are discussed including mass customization. Finally, some of the most important factors for the successful CMMN are presented.

  • Navigating uncharted waters : Designing business models for virtual and augmented reality companies in the medical industry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technologies are at the heart of industry transformation. Virtual and augmented reality companies provide fundamentally new ways of communication, treatment, education, and specialist training within the medical industry. However, business models for new ventures that target the medical industry have received scant attention within academic research. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze how virtual and augmented reality firms create value for their customers in the medical industry. In all, we have studied eight companies that offer different types of solutions for their target segments. The results of the analysis are four design elements consisting of twelve positions and three design themes that define the similarities and differences between the business models for the companies. We contribute to existing research within the field by analyzing business models of the investigated companies using a design approach, classifying the virtual and augmented reality companies, and analyzing the role of new technology in the development of the medical industry.
