  • mRNA GPR162 changes are associated with decreased food intake in rat, and its human genetic variants with impairments in glucose homeostasis in two Swedish cohorts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Gene. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-1119 .- 1879-0038. ; 581:2, s. 139-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are a class of integral membrane proteins mediating intercellular interactions of fundamental physiological importance for survival including regulation of food intake, blood pressure, and hormonal sensing signaling, among other roles. Homeostatic alterations in the physiological status of GPCRs are often associated with underlying causes of disease, and to date, several orphan GPCRs are still uncharacterized. Findings from our previous study demonstrate that the Rhodopsin family protein GPR162 is widely expressed in GABAergic as well as other neurons within the mouse hippocampus, whereas extensive expression is observed in hypothalamus, amygdala, and ventral tegmental area, regions strictly interconnected and involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis and hedonic feeding. In this study, we provide a further anatomical characterization of GPR162 in mouse brain via in situ hybridization as well as detailed mRNA expression in a panel of rat tissues complementing a specie-specific mapping of the receptor. We also provide an attempt to demonstrate a functional implication of GPR162 in food intake-related behavior via antisense knockdown studies. Furthermore, we performed human genetic studies in which for the first time, variants of the GPR162 gene were associated with impairments in glucose homeostasis.

  • Extinction debt in fragmented grasslands: paid or not?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vegetation Science. - : Wiley. - 1100-9233 .- 1654-1103. ; 20:1, s. 3-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fragmentation of grasslands and forests is considered amajor threat to biodiversity. In the case of plants, theeffect of fragmentation or landscape context is still unclearand published results are divergent. One explanation forthis divergence is the slow response of long-lived plants, creating an extinction debt. However, this has not beenempirically confirmed. In this study, data were compiledfrom broad-scale studies of grasslands from throughoutthe world that relate plant diversity to fragmentationeffects. Only seven studies from northern Europe, out ofa total 61, gave any information on actual habitat fragmentationin time and space. In landscapes with 410%grassland remaining, present-day species richness wasrelated to past landscape or habitat pattern. In landscapeswith o10% grassland remaining, in contrast, plant speciesrichness was more related to contemporary landscapeor habitat pattern. Studies from landscapes with 410%grassland remaining supported the concept of an extinctiondebt, while studies from more fragmented landscapesdid not provide any evidence of an extinction debt. Inorder to make generalisations about historical legacies onspecies diversity in grasslands it is important to consider arange of highly transformed landscapes, and not onlylandscapes with a high amount of grassland remaining.

  • Standard tools for non-standard care: The values and scripts of a person-centred assessment protocol.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7196. ; 25:1, s. 103-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article uses a material semiotic perspective to study a highly influential model of healthcare policy and practice today: person-centred care. While person-centred care is often regarded as implying a turn away from technology and standardization towards more humanistic values in care, this article shows that mundane standardization technologies, such as an assessment protocol, are integral components of person-centred care. Building on interviews and observational studies at a Swedish hospital introducing person-centred care, the article analyses the person-centred protocol in situ. The article teases out three core concerns inscribed in the protocol: a concern for the patient experience and perspective, a valuing of evidence-based knowledge and a managerial imperative. The article illustrates how these contrasting values were rendered compatible through the continuous tinkering of healthcare professionals. Finally, it shows how users modified the script of the protocol under analysis and how relations between the three core concerns were adjusted in the process. The article concludes that tinkering and user-technology relations are of significance for the fate of person-centred care at large.

  • Liminal Death
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Melbourne, RMIT Gallery, 5 Dec 2023 - 27 Jan 2024.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During an Artistic Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution in 2019 I learned from leading entomologists and mosquito specialists in the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit, or WRBU, in Maryland. During my time there, while studying live mosquito specimens, I was captivated by what I began to call “liminal death.” These are deaths that happen during metamorphosis, right at the critical moment when the mosquito larvae emerge from their exoskeleton, moving across the border between two completely different habitats: water and air. This is such a fascinating process. It was almost like seeing the birth of a human baby except for a big difference: the mosquito is much more active in this process compared to a human baby. They step out of their larval exoskeleton and this needs to happen very quickly, because otherwise they risk drowning. So not all of them would make it. Some, like you can see in this specimen, would emerge head and wings first, but would never step out of their larval shell before it’s too late. So death here is a death in process, frozen in time, preserved in ethanol. This makes me think of my grandfather’s death. My grandfather was disappeared in 1965, and was never returned. So his death was underway and unfinished: his body was never found, so, in fear, my family preserved their hope - and was suspended by this hope – that he was still alive. We are aware that there is no hope that he was still alive, but in the sake of keeping hope in a sea of fear and hopelessness, we decided not to know, to preserve our hope. Talking about preservation: ethanol preserves specimens quite well, but may alter the specimens’ original appearance. Over time, ethanol can also evaporate, affecting the preservation of the specimens. This is another way to say that time heals: it does something to memory. Healing can be thought of as a sort of modification to one’s memory, reimagined in its relation to emotion. But still, my grandfather never really died. He has a liminal death.

  • Thermal fluctuations in nuclear pasta
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 103:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite their astrophysical relevance, nuclear pasta phases are relatively unstudied at high temperatures. We present molecular dynamics simulations of symmetric nuclear matter with several topologies of lasagna at a range of temperatures to study the pasta-uniform transition. Using the Minkowski functionals, we quantify trends in the occupied volume, surface area, mean breadth, and Euler characteristic. The amplitude of surface displacements of the pasta increase with temperature which produce short-lived topological defects such as holes and filaments near melting, resulting in power laws for increasing surface curvature with temperature. We calculate the static structure factor and report the shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of pasta, finding that the shear viscosity is minimized at the melting temperature. These results may have implications for the thermoelastic properties of nuclear pasta and finite-temperature corrections to the equation of state at pasta densities.
