  • Redistribution of land in post-communist Romania
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Eurasian geography and economics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1538-7216 .- 1938-2863. ; 46:8, s. 618-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A geographer discusses changes in the ownership of state and collectivized rural land in post-communist Romania. In an analysis based on historical and recent ownership data as well as on the author's interviews with 205 landholders from East and West Romania, local officials, as well as politicians, the study examines how the country's rural land has been redistributed after 1989. The combination of restitution and distribution is singled out as the unique feature of the Romanian land reform that sets it apart from the less equitable procedures adopted by other post-communist countries. Similarly different, as noted in the paper, is the high share of Romania's agricultural sector in the country's labor force.

  • Geographic impacts of the political: Dealing with nationalised housing in Romania
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Political Geography. ; 24:5, s. 545-567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the context of democratisation in the early 1990s, the governments in Central and East Europe had to decide how to deal with property that had been confiscated from private owners under state socialism. A heated debate arose as to who should be entitled to become the rightful owners of confiscated properties; former owners or current users? On the one hand, the ways in which property was redistributed reflect the ideologies of the new ruling elites. Nationalised properties have to a varying extent been re-privatised by means of restitution, i.e. a return to pre-socialist owners, and public sale to current users of these properties. On the other hand, the spatial impacts of re-privatisation, in terms of ownership patterns, may vary between local place-contexts. Proceeding from a critical realist approach, this article examines the spatial impacts of the political dealing and local implementation practices associated with the process of re-privatisation of nationalised housing in post-socialist Romania.

  • Single-cell and spatial transcriptomics enables probabilistic inference of cell type topography
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Nature Research. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The field of spatial transcriptomics is rapidly expanding, and with it the repertoire of available technologies. However, several of the transcriptome-wide spatial assays do not operate on a single cell level, but rather produce data comprised of contributions from a – potentially heterogeneous – mixture of cells. Still, these techniques are attractive to use when examining complex tissue specimens with diverse cell populations, where complete expression profiles are required to properly capture their richness. Motivated by an interest to put gene expression into context and delineate the spatial arrangement of cell types within a tissue, we here present a model-based probabilistic method that uses single cell data to deconvolve the cell mixtures in spatial data. To illustrate the capacity of our method, we use data from different experimental platforms and spatially map cell types from the mouse brain and developmental heart, which arrange as expected.

  • Synergistic effect of expanded graphite-silane functionalized silica as a hybrid additive in improving the thermal conductivity of cementitious grouts with controllablewater uptake
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073. ; 13:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, a growing demand for geothermal applications has led to the exploitation of energy efficiently by developing grouting materials in the borehole between pipes and the ground. Therefore, the current study developed newly formulated cementitious grouts by the integration of expanded graphite (EG)-based hybrid additives synthesized by building chemical bridges between silica particles and EG in the presence of amino functional silane coupling agents. These produced hybrid additives with controlled EG and silica ratios were utilized in grout mixtures used in borehole heat exchangers to enhance the thermal conductivity. According to the optimization study on the formulation development of grout mixtures with bentonite, silica sands, cement, and superplasticizer by adding neat EG and EG-based hybrids, the relationship between the carbon amount and water demand was found to have a significant impact on thermal conductivity. The highest thermal conductivity value of 2.656 W/mK was achieved by the incorporation of 5 wt% hybrid additive with the ratio silica/EG of 1:5 compared to the reference grout, which showed a thermal conductivity of 2.373 W/mK. Therefore, the enhancement in thermal conductivity was dependent on the increase in the EG content and also the additive loading ratio, resulting in a slight increase in the water demand.

  • Trapped water molecule in the charge separation of a bacterial reaction center
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5207 .- 1520-6106. ; 112:38, s. 12124-12133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Low-frequency oscillations in the absorption spectrum at 1020 nm, connected to the primary charge separation process in Rhodobacter sphaeroides, have been shown by Yakovlev et al. to be caused by rotational motion of an interstitial water molecule called "water-A". The same water molecule was shown by Potter et al. to increase the rate of charge separation by a factor of 8. We have carried out geometry optimization of water-A and its nearest atoms in the protein pocket, using density functional theory (DFT). There are strong hydrogen bonds to the axial imidazol group of the B part of the special pair (P = P A P B ) and to the keto carbonyl group of ring V of the accessory chlorophyll (B A ). Rotation of water-A is thus impossible in the electronic ground state. We have tried to support our speculations on other possible mechanisms by calculations. The P + B A - charge transfer state is stabilized by proton transfer from water-A and simultaneous proton transfer from the axial group of P B to water-A. After double proton transfer the hydrogen bond to the keto group disappears whereby a possibility opens up for almost free water rotation. The results therefore would explain the 32 cm -1 oscillation of Yakovlev et al. The proposed mechanism assumes, however, that the general assumption that the activation energy disappears in the primary charge separation of bacterial photosynthesis, holds also for this special case. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

  • Damage evolution modeling in multidiractional laminates and the resulting nonlinear response
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: ICCM-12 Europe. - Tours : ICCM. - 2951452624
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stiffness reduction in [S,90n]s symmetric laminates, containing orthotropic sub-laminates (S) is analyzed as a function of crack density in 900 layer. Closed form expressions relating stiffness changes to the transverse crack density are used to compute stiffness changes due to accumulated damage. Weibull strength distribution of 900 layer is assumed and Shear Lag and Hashin’s models are used for calculation of stress distribution in 900 layer with cracks. Weibull parameters are obtained from experimental data for [02, 904]s laminate and then used for other lay-ups. Strength approach and Monte-Carlo simulation is used to estimate damage evolution in 900 layer and crack density as a function of applied strain is obtained. It is used to predict stiffness changes in [S,90n]s laminates as a function of applied strain. Predictions are compared with experimental data for [±θ, 904]s θ= 0,15,30,40 GF/EP laminates. Comparison shows fairly good agreement between prediction and experimental.

  • A missense mutation in the aggrecan C-type lectin domain disrupts extracellular matrix interactions and causes dominant familial osteochondritis dissecans
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 86:2, s. 126-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Osteochondritis dissecans is a disorder in which fragments of articular cartilage and subchondral bone dislodge from the joint surface. We analyzed a five-generation family in which affected members had autosomal-dominant familial osteochondritis dissecans. A genome-wide linkage analysis identified aggrecan (ACAN) as a prime candidate gene for the disorder. Sequence analysis of ACAN revealed heterozygosity for a missense mutation (c.6907G > A) in affected individuals, resulting in a p.V2303M amino acid substitution in the aggrecan G3 domain C-type lectin, which mediates interactions with other proteins in the cartilage extracellular matrix. Binding studies with recombinant mutated and wild-type G3 proteins showed loss of fibulin-1, fibulin-2, and tenascin-R interactions for the V2303M protein. Mass spectrometric analyses of aggrecan purified from patient cartilage verified that V2303M aggrecan is produced and present in the tissue. Our results provide a molecular mechanism for the etiology of familial osteochondritis dissecans and show the importance of the aggrecan C-type lectin interactions for cartilage function in vivo.
