  • Reduced frontotemporal perfusion in psychopathic personality
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry Research. - 1872-7123. ; 114:2, s. 81-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several brain-imaging studies have found associations between aberrant functioning in the frontal and temporal lobes and violent offending. We have previously reported decreased frontotemporal perfusion unrelated to psychosis, substance abuse, or current medication in 21 violent offenders. In the present study, we compared the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in a new group of 32 violent offenders to scores on the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), which rates two aspects of psychopathy: disturbed interpersonal attitudes (Factor 1) and impulsive antisocial behavior (Factor 2). A recently proposed model has split Factor 1 into a new Factor 1 (deceitful interpersonal style), a new Factor 2 (affective unresponsiveness), and a Factor 3, which approximately corresponds to the old Factor 2. The rCBF was assessed by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with technetium-99m-d,l-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) in regions of interest (ROIs) placed in accordance with fusioned magnetic resonance images (MRI) and SPECT scans. Significant negative correlations were found between interpersonal features of psychopathy (the old and especially the new Factor 1) and the frontal and temporal perfusion. The two most clearly associated ROIs were the head of the caudate nuclei and the hippocampi. These findings in a group of violent offenders living under the same conditions, which reduced the number of state-related confounders, add to the evidence indicating that aberrant frontotemporal activity may be a factor in violent behavior.

  • Can field botany be effectively taught as a distance course? Experiences and reflections from the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AoB PLANTS. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2041-2851. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic that started in 2020 forced a rapid change in university teaching, with large numbers of courses switching to distance learning with very little time for preparation. Courses involving many practical elements and field excursions required particular care if students were to fulfil planned learning outcomes. Here, we present our experiences in teaching field botany in 2020 and 2021. Using a range of methods and tools to introduce students to the subject, promote self-learning and reflection and give rapid and regular feedback, we were able to produce a course that allowed students to achieve the intended learning outcomes and that obtained similarly positive student evaluations to previous years. The course and its outcomes were further improved in 2021. We describe how we structured field botany as a distance course in order that we could give the best possible learning experience for the students. Finally, we reflect on how digital tools can aid teaching such subjects in the future, in a world where public knowledge of natural history is declining. In an era of large-scale biodiversity change and reductions in basic knowledge of natural history, it is important that practical courses in subjects like field botany continue to be taught effectively. Forced by the COVID-19 pandemic to teach plant identification with no direct contact with students, we used a range of methods and tools to promote self-learning and reflection in students, and to facilitate rapid feedback by teachers. Here, we present our method for producing a course that allowed students to achieve the intended learning outcomes and that obtained positive student evaluations.

  • Modeling Slip in Stress-Laminated Timber Bridges: Comparison of Two Finite-Element-Method Approaches and Test Values
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bridge Engineering. - 1084-0702 .- 1943-5592. ; 19:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Finite-element (FE) simulations of the deformation behavior of a 5.4-m-long, 8-m-wide, and 0.27-m-thick stress-laminated timber bridge deck were conducted. The simulation results were compared with full-scale test results when using a load resembling an axle load placed near the edge and when cycling the load between a high and low value. Two separate approaches to nonlinear FE modeling were used. The first FE model simulates a frictional slip between the glulam beams with an elastic-plastic material model. The second FE model simulates a frictional slip by modeling each discrete contact surface between each beam in the deck. The results show good agreement between simulation and test results and reveal that the simulation model that models contact surfaces produces slightly better results at the expense of a greater modeling effort and increased computational time. Hysteresis in the load versus deformation curves is clearly visible and was due to significant slip between the glulam beams, which was successfully simulated.

  • Forskning om rektor - en forskningsöversikt
  • 2000
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

    • From 1930 until 1970 dispersed efforts were made in Sweden to educate school leaders. In 1975 an organisation for a systematic education of school leaders carried by the state was established in the country. A review is presented of the five different editions of school leader education that have existed in Sweden since then. Work of state committees and decisions at national level are described that have influenced the content, the design and the organisational localisation of the Swedish school leader education. The institutionalisation of the educational programme for school leaders in Sweden is clarified. The author of the book participated in the state committee that presented a proposal that was used as the ground for the first edition of the Swedish school leader education. He served for fifteen years as the manager of the Swedish school leader education.

  • Load moments about the hip and knee joints during ergometer cycling.
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - 0036-5505 .- 1940-2228. ; 18:4, s. 165-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to calculate the magnitudes of moments of force acting about the bilateral hip and knee joint axes during ergometer cycling. Six healthy subjects pedalled a weight-braked bicycle ergometer at different workloads, pedalling rates, saddle heights and pedal foot position. During cycling at 120 Watts, 60 revolutions per minute with mid-saddle height and anterior pedal foot position, the mean peak flexing and extending hip load moments were 34.3 and 8.9 Nm, respectively. Mean peak flexing knee load moments was 28.8 Nm and extending moment was 11.9 Nm. Hip load moments were significantly increased by increasing the ergometer workload or pedalling rate. For knee load moments, workload was the most important factor. The flexing knee load moment did not change with changes in pedalling rate. Different saddle heights or pedal food positions had a slight but not always statistically significant influence on the hip and knee joint loads. The maximum hip and knee joint load moments induced during cycling were small compared with those obtained during other exercises or normal activities such as level walking, stair climbing, and lifting.

  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - 0036-5505 .- 1940-2228. ; 17:2, s. 53-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to quantify the activity as recorded by electromyography during ergometer cycling in eleven different muscles of the lower extremity. Eleven healthy subjects rode in twelve different ways at different work-load, pedalling rate, saddle height and pedal foot position. Vastus medialis and lateralis, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis and the soleus muscle were the most activated muscles. Changes in muscle activity during different calibrations were studied in eight of the eleven muscles. An increase in work-load significantly increased the mean maximum activity in all the eight muscles investigated. An increase of the pedalling rate increased the activity in the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, vastus medialis, medial hamstring, gastrocnemius medialis and soleus muscles. An increase of the saddle height increased the muscle activity in the gluteus medius, medial hamstring and gastrocnemius medialis muscles. Use of a posterior pedal foot position increased the activity in the gluteus medius and rectus femoris muscles, and decreased the activity in the soleus muscle.

  • 1986
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology. - 0301-5548 .- 1432-1025. ; 55:3, s. 229-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to calculate the magnitude of the instantaneous muscular power output at the hip, knee and ankle joints during ergometer cycling. Six healthy subjects pedalled a weight-braked bicycle ergometer at 120 watts (W) and 60 revolutions per minute (rpm). The subjects were filmed with a cine camera, and pedal reaction forces were recorded from a force transducer mounted in the pedal. The muscular work at the hip, knee and ankle joint was calculated using a model based upon dynamic mechanics described elsewhere. The mean peak concentric power output was, for the hip extensors, 74.4 W, hip flexors, 18.0 W, knee extensors, 110.1 W, knee flexors, 30.0 W and ankle plantar flexors, 59.4 W. At the ankle joint, energy absorption through eccentric plantar flexor action was observed, with a mean peak power of 11.4 W and negative work of 3.4 J for each limb and complete pedal revolution. The energy production relationships between the different major muscle groups were computed and the contributions to the total positive work were: hip extensors, 27%; hip flexors, 4%; knee extensors, 39%; knee flexors, 10%; and ankle plantar flexors 20%.

  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - 0036-5505 .- 1940-2228. ; 18:4, s. 159-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electromyography (EMG) of eleven different lower limb muscles of ten healthy subjects was quantified during normal level walking. The surface EMGs obtained were normalized, in percentage, to the activity obtained during an isometric maximum voluntary test contraction of each subject. The mean peak activities of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and medial hamstring muscles occurred at heel-strike and were between 5 and 15% of max isometric EMG. The magnitudes of tibialis anterior and triceps surae muscular activity were higher than those of the other muscles investigated. Mean peak activity in tibialis anterior was 27%, in gastrocnemius medialis 42%, in gastrocnemius lateralis 19% and in soleus 40%. The important role of the triceps surae during walking was reflected in comparatively high muscular activity at push-off.

  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Foot & ankle. - : SAGE Publications. - 0198-0211. ; 6:3, s. 135-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ankle joint moment, joint compressive force, and Achilles tendon force obtained during ergometer cycling were calculated by using a quartz force-measuring transducer mounted on the pedal. Six healthy subjects rode in 11 different ways at different workloads, pedalling rates, saddle heights, and pedal foot positions. The mean maximum dorsiflexing load moment about the ankle joint during standardized ergometer cycling was calculated to 30.9 nm. The mean ankle joint compressive force and mean Achilles tendon force measured 1008 N (1.4 times body weight) and 762 N (1.1 times body weight), respectively. The ankle joint moment was significantly changed by a change of workload or pedal foot position.

  • Secular trend, seasonality and effects of a community-based intervention on neonatal mortality : follow-up of a cluster-randomised trial in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. - : BMJ. - 0143-005X .- 1470-2738. ; 72:9, s. 776-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Little is know about whether the effects of community engagement interventions for child survival in low-income and middle-income settings are sustained. Seasonal variation and secular trend may blur the data. Neonatal mortality was reduced in a cluster-randomised trial in Vietnam where laywomen facilitated groups composed of local stakeholders employing a problem-solving approach for 3 years. In this analysis, we aim at disentangling the secular trend, the seasonal variation and the effect of the intervention on neonatal mortality during and after the trial. Methods: In Quang Ninh province, 44 communes were allocated to intervention and 46 to control. Births and neonatal deaths were assessed in a baseline survey in 2005, monitored during the trial in 2008–2011 and followed up by a survey in 2014. Time series analyses were performed on monthly neonatal mortality data. Results: There were 30 187 live births and 480 neonatal deaths. The intervention reduced the neonatal mortality from 19.1 to 11.6 per 1000 live births. The reduction was sustained 3 years after the trial. The control areas reached a similar level at the time of follow-up. Time series decomposition analysis revealed a downward trend in the intervention areas during the trial that was not found in the control areas. Neonatal mortality peaked in the hot and wet summers. Conclusions: A community engagement intervention resulted in a lower neonatal mortality rate that was sustained but not further reduced after the end of the trial. When decomposing time series of neonatal mortality, a clear downward trend was demonstrated in intervention but not in control areas.Trial registration number: ISRCTN44599712, Post-results.

  • Differences between Teachers’ and Principals’ Expectations of School Leaders in Simulated Situations
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research shows that context matters when principals execute their role and that it affects how successful principals become in leading their respective schools. Expectations that occur in daily encounters between teachers and principals at local school organizations are focused on in a pilot study to discover how teachers’ expectations influence their principal’s work in practice. The research questions are: 1) How do teachers’ experience-based expectations differ from more ideal expectations? 2) How do teachers’ and principals’ expectations differ in simulated real situations? and 3) In what way do expectations expressed by teachers and school leaders differ from more ideal expectations expressed in school policy documents? The study is framed within social psychological and organization development perspectives. The results from this pilot study, where we also test the validity of the methodology, show that there are differences in experience-based and ideal expectations of principals. In situations where internal pressure is present there is a closer gap between these two kinds of expectations compared to situations where external pressures have a more prominent role. Teachers and school leaders agree that the role of the principal is of importance to the school and they also share most views on what a principal should do and how to act appear as at the school. The focal point of the study is relations between teachers and their principals and the evaluation of how norms are constituted in real situations and subsequently how they shape the role of the school leader.
